Don’t know if you know the name Marc Scott Zicree. He’s probably the best expert on Twilight Zone and Rod Serling after Anne Serling. He’s also written for Babylon 5, Star Trek: TNG, Star Trek: DS9, Sliders, etc. 
He created a new independent sci-fi show called Space Command. It’s rather silly, the effects aren’t great, but they do have some fun stars from some of the shows he’s worked on - like Bill Mumy (Twilight Zone, Lost in Space), Nichelle Nichols (Star Trek TOS), Doug Jones (Star Trek Discovery, Crimson Peak, Pan's Labyrinth, so much more), Bruce Boxleitner (Babylon 5), Bob Picardo (Star Trek VOY) and Armin Shimerman (Star Trek DS9)!
He’s doing a kickstarter for another season of this show. Only a few days left and VERY close to the goal!
It’s reminiscent of the 90s sci-fi in the 90s, and although it is certainly not high budget, the story is interesting and it's quite nice seeing all the familiar faces.

The summer after she and Ludwig break up, QT takes her daughters to Texas to see their Aunt Maya.
The summer after she and Ludwig split up, QT decides to take the girls on a trip to Austin. The nature of being the parent the kids live with for most of the week is that she doesn’t get to be the fun one. When they stay with Ludwig it’s all ice cream and movie nights and when they stay with her it’s driving them to school and trying to get them to eat their vegetables for once.
It’s not like it’s Ludwig’s fault, really. They’ve been stumbling their way through the whole co-parenting without living together thing and she’s the one who’s lucky enough to have her daughters in her house almost every night. With the limited time he has from the nature of the arrangement they’re currently working with, she doesn’t blame him for wanting to make all his weekends special.
It’s just like, fuck. QT wants to be a fun parent too. She gets to have all the little things with the girls but she wants to make those fantastic unique memories too. It’s hard to measure up to the guy who’s been taking them to France alone pretty much every year since they were born.
So, she decides to take them on a trip to Texas to see their Aunt Maya. It’s a little more special than the trips they take up to Washington and kids fucking love animals. Their vacation is going to be fucking fun and something different that the girls remember forever.
In hindsight, taking a six-year-old and a four-year-old on a twenty-hour road trip without a second driver might have been slightly ambitious. Even though they stop for the night in some New Mexico town that QT forgets the name of the second they leave, the trip is not without its fair share of tears, emergency bathroom stops, and calls to Slime when she needs to hear the voice of another adult for an hour or so just to stay awake.
They do get there in one piece, though, long after the sun has already set. Maya welcomes them to the bigger house that she had built on Alveus property after she got married and all of them sink into their beds without much time for chatting. As much as she wants to catch up with Maya, if QT doesn’t get some fucking sleep tonight she’s going to spend the entire week as a miserable husk of a human being.
The next morning is buttermilk pancakes and farm-fresh eggs. Both of the girls are super talkative— it’s been almost two years since the last time Maya was able to come to Los Angeles and they want to tell her about pretty much everything that’s happened in their lives since then.
They spend the day walking around the property and introducing the girls to all the animals. Lucy takes a particular liking to Stompy, who she awkwardly hugs about six different times despite being way too short for it to work and Ryan happily talks to Maya about bugs pretty much the entire day. She seriously has no fucking clue how her older daughter managed to pick up Maya’s bug obsession despite living several states away. Considering that she’s typically quiet, QT is just happy to see her so animated about something.
“Mom, can we get a donkey?” Lucy asks as she holds out a carrot to Serrano in her open palm, just like Maya showed her.
“Where would the donkey live?” she asks, an amused smile on her face.
“The backyard.”
Ryan frowns. “Aunt Maya says that donkeys need a lot of land to graze in. Our backyard is small.”
“We have a donkey at the sanctuary in California. Maybe I’ll meet you guys for a visit sometime,” Maya offers, crouching to ruffle Lucy’s hair. For someone who claims to not be huge on kids, she’s fucking great with the girls.
They have dinner outside, sitting on the deck and enjoying the gentle summer breeze. Sometimes QT forgets how nice it is to be in a place like this, surrounded by people you care about and the beauty of the Earth. She wishes that she had driven out here sooner.
The girls don’t last long after dinner and luckily, they both go down to bed pretty easily.
QT returns to the deck afterward to watch the sunset.
When she hears the sliding door behind her, she turns to see Maya walking toward her with two wine glasses, a bottle of some sort of red, and a corkscrew.
“Caleb picked it out special for us,” she explains as she sets down the glasses on the small table between their chairs. “Don’t tell him this, but I still can’t taste the difference between this and the cheap shit.” She holds out the corkscrew to her. “You’re on opening duty.”
QT snorts. “You know I still don’t like wine,” she tells her as she pops the cork off the bottle and passes it back to Maya. “The taste never really grew on me.”
“God, me neither. It’s fucking gross,” Maya replies. “But it’s like old times, right? I’m going to do the pour.”
Maya does what is frankly the least satisfying pour she’s done, which just makes QT laugh and take the bottle to show her how it’s done with the other wine glass. This might just be for them but she still wants it to be right.
When Maya takes a sip of her wine, she wrinkles her nose. “Still gross.” She takes another sip anyway.
QT sips from her own glass. She still isn’t really a fan of wine whatsoever, but this is definitely one of the better ones that she’s had.
“Any goss?” QT asks, turning to her as she sets her glass back down on the table next to her.
“We’re opening a third sanctuary in Colorado, if that counts as goss.”
Where QT has two actual children, Maya has plenty of her own in the form of all the animals in her care. All the shit she’s done to promote conservation is fucking insane and QT is proud of her for it every day. Three animal sanctuaries and countless people more invested in conservation from all the educational content that she’s put out. It’s fucking impressive.
“We’ve grown up, haven’t we?” QT smiles a little as she says it. She isn’t sure the version of her that started a podcast in a shed with her best friend could even imagine where they are now.
Because they’ve both been through so much fucking shit throughout their lives and even though they have gray streaks in their hair, they have wrinkles from smiling instead of frown lines. They’ve both achieved and continue to achieve the things that they want out of life. Maya has all of this— the sanctuaries and the educational directive— and QT has two daughters, a few big regular events she still streams, and is working on her first cookbook.
“A little bit maybe.” Maya holds her glass in front of her pensively. “I know that we’ve changed a lot but I like that this still feels the same.”
It does. Staying connected is harder than ever with both of them being so fucking busy without the excuse of a podcast or streams to drive them together but their relationship manages to stay the same anyway. There’s a reason that she’s Aunt Maya, even if she lives several states away.
“I don’t think I’ve ever been this happy,” QT admits. “I mean, I still feel fucking inadequate sometimes but I think that this is the life I’ve always wanted. I’ve got my daughters, my career, and I’m sitting on a deck pretending to enjoy fancy fucking wine with my best friend.”
Maya holds up her glass. “Cheers to that. I’m so fucking happy you’re here. It’s been so long since we’ve had time for us, and you know I love to see the girls too. Plus, I don’t have to deal with Ludwig anymore.”
She says his name like it’s a bad world.
QT rolls her eyes. “He’s a good guy and a great dad. We’re still friends even if things are weird right now.”
“I know.” Maya smiles. “I just like giving him shit. I’m glad you guys are on good terms even if it didn’t work out.”
“It did work out. This is how it was supposed to happen,” QT tells her, even though it probably sounds insane. “We’re both happier this way, and that means we can be better parents for our daughters.”
“You’ve always been an awesome fucking mom but I see your point.”
QT drinks her wine and takes in the scenery again. “I think maybe we’ll make this a yearly thing, if you’ll have us. The girls won’t be kids together, and I want them to have time with you and experience places like this one. The drive is a fucking bitch but it’s worth it.”
“I’d have you here every fucking day if I could, QT.”
The two of them sit quietly, drinking their wine and watching the sun fall below the horizon. Something comfortable and unnameable passes between them. This is how they love, sitting together with a drink and just enjoying being in the same space, physical or virtual.
QT smiles, immensely grateful for everything she has, her friends and family especially. When her girls get older, she hopes that this kind of stuff is what they remember.

Summary:
Jeremy had put to rest his alter ego, Rimmy Tim. Had accepted what had happened and had tried to move on and succeeded. Now he was back where the beginning of the end happened.

The shell of it was rusted and burnt out. The seats inside had been long ago stripped out and probably sold or cannibalised for parts. The engine was gone. Tires missing and the front left had melted from the crash. The headlights had moss and mould and mushrooms growing from them with the moisture and the fact it was the only thing on the car that hadn’t rusted. The hood was bent open, the whole front of the car had been crushed and bent. An old racing accident on the abandoned track. When they had found out what he had done to them. What he really was.
If one looked hard enough they could see the skid marks. The holes from bullets or grenades or rockets. From his spot leaning against the side of the rusted and useless Zentorno, he could feel the betrayal all over again. It wasn’t as bad now, jagged edges had healed somewhat, but it still hurt and probably would for the rest of his life. The black paint of the car had nearly melted off entirely in the blaze or a molotov aimed just right. But the husk of the low rider sat right where it was that day.
A simple red alert text on their phones had set it all off. Instead of a fun racing day they had an answer as to why some things never added up. Their connections into the FIB and police force had shown them their rat. He was more of a devil when they found out all that he had done.
Sitting here now made the ache behind his own ribs nearly unbearable. 
He took another calming puff of his cigarette and looked around again in the broad daylight. The sun was already low in the sky even though it wasn’t even dinner time. Oranges and reds and browns among the greens and blacks and greys. Autumn here had some sort of ethereal effect. It’s why they bought and built here. Now it was misty by the ditches and damp in his bones.
Three years and the little racing circuit was overgrown and sinking back into the earth bit by bit, year by year. It was fresh smelling now. Even with the October air burning his nose it was beautiful. The world he had left behind was slowly healing. 
His cigarette was a piss poor way to heat himself up from the inside. But it was a nice treat he didn’t indulge often. Maybe once a month if that. He didn’t smoke much anymore. Didn’t drink much either. Not since he ran with the crew. And especially not since he was revealed to be a traitor. They had disbanded pretty quickly after that. 
Jeremy didn’t do a lot of things he used to do. But that doesn’t mean he stopped all of it. Matt and him are still best friends. Still own a home together. Though now it’s a modest one in a quieter neighbourhood outside of the city of Los Santos. They had made many new friends. All from disbanded or low rung crews. Some new names came up that had help getting a foothold. Some old names that helped those new to the game up rather than beat them down. 
The royalty of the city and extended had fallen. There were no more kings of Los Santos. Fake AH was no more and it would never rise again. Safe houses were torched out. Bank accounts emptied and closed or transferred. Alternate identities erased. Paint jobs and costumes and familiar territories scraped, scrubbed, and scarpered. Photos burned along with files and hard-drives. 
Jack and Geoff, and even Ray, an old friend he had briefly worked with, had seen to it that a few of the more identifiable cars had found the bottom of the ocean. They had all been wiped off the map and chose to stay that way. All their pseudonyms- no longer used and put to rest. 
His leather jacket creaked as he shifted. His cell phone was ringing. Pulling it out of his jeans pocket he caught the name and smiled. He answered it and pressed the cold metal to his ear.
“Anthony. I’m where it all started to end.” He took another drag and looked out to where the sun would set in another couple hours. “You close?” He felt the mild lick of the Los Santos sun.
“Yeah, had to do a pick up. And don’t use my first name, sounds weird even now.” A pause and the sound of a turn signal in a car. “How are you guys right now?” The voice on the other end sounded warm and inviting. Among that clear sound was the soft murmurs of a couple new crew mates Jeremy had the pleasure of meeting and befriending.
Jeremy grinned, looking to where Matt and Ray were flying a drone to see what had become of the now cracked tarmac raceway. This was a meeting to assess the damage and see if it could be fixed. “I’m chilled to the bone.” 
A heavy sigh and a few laughs came from the line. “That joke was never funny. We’re turning onto the driveway now. See you shortly.” Chilled hung up with what sounded like a smile. 
Jeremy finished his smoke and stamped it out on the ground. Pushing his way off from the shell of a car. He dared not look at the blackened dashboard. Didn’t want to see his own initials matched with a traitor’s. 
Rimmy Tim might live again but not to the glory of what he was. No. Now he was in a new crew as well as an independent. He had a lovely wife who joined them from time to time. Who loved the carnage as much as he did, and still does. She was running her own job with a couple of the ladies. He had friends who he slept around with safely. Friends who loved him and checked on him regularly. He was slowly fitting back into his skin.
Jeremy smiled to himself and started walking toward his two nerds as they flew the drone. Ray held the tablet and gave little callouts as to what he saw. Matt flew the white personal drone and slowly surveyed the place. 
He broke off the rust from around his heart. He can take care of it with his new friends.

[2.5] The Kamisatos, Scaramouche, and the Rather Aged Notes: A Theory
You may be surprised to know that Scaramouche has more to do with the Kamisatos than you’d suspect. Here, I'll propose a naku weed theory about something I noticed in the Rather Aged Notes, a series of objects that have glimpses of Scaramouche's past on Tatarasuna, and what it may have to do with Kamisato Ayato and Kamisato Ayaka. This post contains no leaks.
SPOILERS: Omnipresence Over Mortals, The Very Special Fortune Slip [minor], Sayu's Hangout Event [minor], Husk of Opulent Dreams lore, Ayaka's character stories and voicelines, and Yae Miko's character story 5.

DISCLAIMER: I like all of the characters mentioned here. This is not an "Ayato sus" post, just some wild speculation. Very excited to learn more about the "Yashiro rascal" in a couple of weeks :)
[EDIT: as of Irodori, this theory is DEBUNKED. The answer (ayato is looking into scaramouche) was right, but my math (ayato raided the rather aged notes through the Shuumatsuban) was wrong. My original suspicion is more likely to be correct: Scaramouche raided the Rather Aged Notes, because he needed to conceal something about his past. (This was wrong too! It was actually raided by Sumeru researchers!) Thank you for the support on this post, feel free to still read but wanted to clarify this is now out-dated!]
This post is adapted from a twitter thread I made a couple of months ago, posted here. It is largely the same, but will include Yae Miko's lore as supporting evidence, which was not available at the time of my writing the original.
I also want to plug some other threads that had great analysis of this question as well: bloo's thread, vivi/ryan's thread, and julie's thread. Bloo establishes a clear timeline among many other analyses, while vivi/ryan analyzes Childe's involvement in version 2.2 and the official art featuring him with Thoma. Julie proposes an interesting theory for why Scaramouche may have targeted the Raiden Gokaden following the events of Tatarasuna.
Alright, let's get to it.
The Wandering Eccentric
In Tatarasuna, there are a series of notes that can be found throughout the island called the "Rather Aged Notes." These were identified some time ago as key pieces of Scaramouche's past, giving a scattered account of his time with Mikoshi Nagamasa, Sir Katsuragi, Nozomu, Miyazaki, and Kinjiro.

"...Also, Sir Katsuragi discovered a nameless eccentric while patrolling around Nazuchi Beach..."
Scaramouche is the "wandering eccentric" the notes are referring to. The Plume of Luxury from the Husk of Opulent Dreams set gives more information about what was happening at Tatarasuna when Scaramouche stayed there:
The long-wandering eccentric no longer thinks about this, But when he closes his eyes, he can still see the moonlit nights over Tatarasuna and the burning furnace flames. The kind young deputy [presumably Katsuragi] said: "This gold ornament is a proof of identity granted by the Almighty Shogun," "But as you travel the world, please bear this in mind," "Never to reveal your identity to others." The upright Inspector [presumably Nagamasa] said: "This gold ornament may be a proof of identity granted by the Almighty Shogun," "But you are neither man nor mechanism," "And so I can only deal with you in this fashion. Do not hold this against me!"
The wanderer who has left yesterday in the dust no longer thinks about it, But when he covers his ears, he can still hear the wild winds that roared that year. A pair of expectant eyes said: "This gold ornament is a proof of identity granted by the Almighty Shogun," "It must surely be able to save the people."
The intelligent, lovely shrine maiden [presumably Yae Miko] said: "This gold ornament is a proof of identity granted by the Almighty Shogun," "And she will not abandon you." "As for me, I shall do my best to send for help immediately..."
...But in the end, the golden arrow-feather were covered in dust, And all tales were incinerated in karmic flames till nothing remained.
The only clear "end" to this story for the moment is the slaying of Sir Katsuragi by Mikoshi Nagamasa, which is how the craftable Katsuragikiri Nagamasa claymore obtained its name.
Presumably after this, Scaramouche began scheming against the five branches of the Raiden Gokaden, families of swordsmiths who practiced different forging arts derived from one taught by the Shogun (More About Kamisato Ayaka: III).
This part of his story is detailed in the Calabash of Awakening in the Husk of Opulent Dreams set. Amenoma (the same as the Inazuma blacksmiths) escaped his schemes, Isshin (Raiden's blade's line) was left barely intact, and Kyoushin, Doume, and Senju were all wiped out.

The Hunter or the Hunted
Here is where things start to get interesting. For the last 6 months, my brain operated under the blissful assumption that the Rather Aged Notes were raided BY the Fatui. As in, the Fatui were the ones looking for them.
And I thought that made sense, right? Maybe someone within the Fatui was investigating him further (like Pierro, or Signora), or Scaramouche himself ordered a raid on his former home to try and conceal evidence of his past.
But that's not what the blurb actually says. The blurb says "These notes seem to have been plundered during a recent raid on the Fatui." Which suggests that rather than being the raiders, the Fatui were the ones being raided.

And this could be a weird translation. It could be absolutely nothing, in addition to a misunderstanding. But consider some additional information that may make this more interesting: Kamisato Ayaka's voicelines reveal some peculiar circumstances about her family. She states:
"The Kamisato Clan once suffered a major blow when we failed to protect a swordsmith of national significance. We were harassed by the Fatui, we lost many of our people, and we received a great deal of criticism. It all aged Father greatly, and severely damaged the Kamisato Clan's standing within the Shogunate." (More About Kamisato Ayaka: II)
She follows up on this tale in her third About voiceline:

"The art of blade forging taught by the Shogun varies based on astrology, application, materials used, the furnace conditions, individual personalities, and elemental changes. These differences between smiths if what gave rise to the Raiden Gokaden. Swordsmiths capable of forging renowned blades are seen as spiritual personnel with sacred abilities, and as such they should be managed by the Yashiro Commission, which oversees all cultural, artistic, and ceremonial affairs. So naturally, the swordsmith's betrayal is the fault of inefficient management by the Kamisato Clan."
The Kamisatos once oversaw the safety of at least one Raiden Gokaden swordsmith, meaning they had someone who Scaramouche was targeting. In an incident that is not disclosed as of now, this swordsmith's safety was betrayed "due to the incompetence of one of their subordinate supervisors" (Yae Miko Character Story 5), and the Kamisato Clan failed to protect them. In all likelihood, this swordsmith fell to Scaramouche's schemes. This would also mean that Scaramouche is responsible for Ayaka and Ayato's parents' stress and eventual decline in health, and that his revenge scheme nearly ruined the Kamisato Clan's standing in Inazuman society.
So here's how I've arrived at this wild speculation - if the Fatui were the ones being raided for the Rather Aged Notes, then who could have been the raiders?
The Yashiro Commission.

Yae Miko: It belongs to the Yashiro Commission. A secret unit under Kamisato Ayato.
Clandestine Revenge
To be completely clear, I think Ayaka has nothing to do with this operation if it is indeed coming from the Kamisatos. I think Ayato, as the Yashiro Commissioner and therefore the leader of the Shuumatsuban, ordered a raid on Tatarasuna due to the Fatui's increasing activity in Inazuma during the Vision Hunt Decree war and the rapidly declining situation on Kannazuka during that time. I believe this is just one of the things Ayato was doing behind the scenes during the Vision Hunt Decree to aid Inazuma while the Archon was absent in her role.
A raid on the Fatui is also completely within the Shuumatsuban's character thus far. Sayu is affiliated with the organization and carries out a raid on the Tenryou Commission as a part of the Inazuma Archon Quest's climax, and surely this is not something she could have improvised due to its highly sensitive nature. In addition, we have Momoyo (or "Gendou Ringo"), a skilled spy familiar with the process of creating fake dead bodies, and Sayu's own admittance that she was sent to assassinate the Traveler during her Hangout Event. These dudes are not to be trifled with.
More than this, though, Ayato may have had reason to believe by this point that the person responsible for the hell his parents went through and his premature assumption of the role of Kamisato Clan head had something to do with this island's past.
Let me explain. In the Plume of Luxury, Scaramouche talks to an "intelligent, lovely shrine maiden" on his mission to send help to Tatarasuna, which was experiencing a Tatarigami crisis due to Nagamasa's unsafe processing of Jade Steel from Crystal Marrow. Though it is not outright stated anywhere, there are sufficient context clues in-game for me to feel comfortable saying it was Yae. This would mean Yae was personally familiar with him, and that if she was aware of what happened on Tatarasuna, a place where weapons were being crafted, then she might have a reason to suspect him when renowned swordsmiths were falling inexplicably.
In her fifth character story, the aftermath of the swordsmith's betrayal is explored further:
The swords of Inazuma have always been famous the world over, and the best works of the Raiden Gokaden in particular are national treasures.
However, only a short time ago, more than half of the five artisan lineages were cut off.
A great number of powerful people were caught up in that conspiracy, and those responsible were all called to account and banished.
Even the Yashiro Commission's Kamisato Clan became involved due to the incompetence of one of their subordinate supervisors.
But before the Shogun could give her final judgment, the Lady Guuji, who usually did not meddle in government affairs, suddenly interceded, rescuing the Kamisato Clan in their hour of peril.
Thus, while they suffered a serious blow, they were spared from dismissal.
In the years that followed, others would speculate greatly concerning the Guuji's actions.
Some observed the close relations between the Yashiro Commission and the Grand Narukami Shrine, and guessed that she had intended to foster advocates loyal to her.
And yet the shrine had always been an entity unto itself, and the Lady Guuji did not usually meddle in governance. Thus this action seemed a sacrifice greater than the reward — hardly a wise decision.
Some others said that the Guuji suspected something to be wrong with the whole situation, and now that the list of those involved was so extensive, any major shakeup in the Yashiro Commission could destabilize Inazuma itself.
This thought, too, seemed reasonable on face, yet did not stand up to scrutiny. After all, was not the rise and fall of great houses merely ordinary in the grand scheme of mortal affairs? And even if the Kamisato were to fall from grace, new leadership for the Yashiro Commission would emerge.
Yet another story said that Miko engaged in secret talks with the Kamisato clan head just after the initial shockwaves had died down.
But the wounded clan was like a candle in the wind at this point. What power could they have to change the situation?
To this day, all these speculations have never amounted to anything, nor have any answers emerged concerning Miko's actions and motivations.
But what none know is how Miko's words that day would become as engraved into the Kamisato Clan as their house's crest.
"That the Kamisato Clan has survived this incident is only due to the Shogun's mercy. Do not forget this in the days that follow."
These words would serve as a seed of destiny, foreshadowing the Yashiro Commission's future position.
In some other time, if a storm were to descend upon Inazuma, and even if they were to come into conflict with the other two commissions, the Yashiro Commission's Kamisato Clan would remember the favor they were shown and abide the Shogun's path to Eternity.
This was a move that the Guuji played with no regrets whatsoever.
What I find so fascinating about the Raiden Gokaden story is that we really have no information about it outside of Ayaka, Yae, and the Husk of Opulent Dreams lore. Amenoma Smithy does not give any hints that they are among the sole survivors of a plot to end their lineage, and they are only alive and passing down their art because Scaramouche got bored.
In any case, I won't try to speculate too much into Miko's reasoning here. I think we'll know in due time, after all. But what I want to flag here is the fact that she did intercede, likely because she knew this long list of powerful individuals who were associated with the swordsmiths' downfall across the nation was a bunch of smoke and mirrors for the puppet who had once come to her shrine asking for aid.
If she did speak to the Kamisato clan head "after the shockwaves died down," this would have likely been Ayato's father. And if she did talk to him at all, I wonder if she disclosed any of her suspicions to him then.
As far as a motivation for the raid goes, I don't feel terribly comfortable guessing because Ayato is not out yet and I don't think we'll have a good read of his character until he is. What I can speculate, however, is that he may have wanted answers after all the misfortune that befell his family and ruined his parents' lives. Why did this happen? Who did this? Why his family? These are all perfectly reasonable questions for someone thrust into leadership at such a young age to ask.
If this theory is correct, then I suppose my biggest question is this: What does Ayato plan to do about it, now?
Theory Weaknesses
Timelines, timelines, timelines. When did Scaramouche begin targeting the Raiden Gokaden? How recent is the recent past, and wouldn't that overlap at least some of Scaramouche's schemes with his status as a Fatui Harbinger? This is certainly possible, as Vivi/Ryan pointed out. Just throws a wrench in what I thought I understood about the Husk of Opulent dreams timeline.
The other hangup I have is that, assuming I'm right to believe the blurb implies the Fatui were the subjects of the raid rather than the raiders, it means they already had the notes for some reason. Why?
Finally, these notes can be discovered the minute you dispose of the containment dome during Tatara Tales. The Fatui seem to have been closing in on the Mikage Furnace during that time period, rather than being an already established presence in the area. So, again, flaws.

Doctor Who: Why Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor Needs an ‘Everybody Lives!’ Moment

Doctor Who! The children’s own show that adults adore.
Doctor Who, as a format, requires an intrinsic joyfulness in its stories to be so adored. If adventures become too continually grim, or not sufficiently fun, then ultimately there’ll be a tipping point where it becomes implausible for the story to continue. Why, ultimately, would the character keep travelling if they weren’t enjoying it? And even if they did, would this be something that would sustain a family audience?
It’s not that you can’t have darkness in Doctor Who, it’s just that it can’t be sustained and eventually something has to give. As such, there’s an inherent optimism in a lot of Doctor Who, even in episodes where it isn’t high in the mix. For the show to make sense, there has to be some hope that wrongs can be righted.
For example: even though William Hartnell’s Doctor starts off trying break his own programme by getting rid of Ian and Barbara as quickly as possible, the show quickly settles into “a great spirit of adventure”; the Second Doctor comforting a grieving Victoria by pointing out that “nobody else in the universe can do what we’re doing” followed by the Doctor letting Victoria leave the TARDIS because it’s the best thing for her. In both cases, the gesture is one of compassion. The Fourth Doctor refers to Sarah Jane Smith as his best friend and she only leaves because he has to go somewhere she can’t (His home planet of Gallifrey, something that on original broadcast had more dramatic weight as he’d only visited it once before in the series and then been forced into regeneration and exile).
When Russell T. Davies relaunched the show in 2005, the unspoken idea became explicit. “Can I just say: travelling with you…I love it,” says Rose Tyler, who – despite portentous trailer statements – survived her travels. In episodes of The Sarah Jane Adventures Russell T. Davies expanded on the Tenth Doctor’s victory lap in ‘The End of Time‘ to make it more celebratory, giving past companions happy endings (some in stark contrast to their grim fates in Nineties’ spin-off media). The departures of Rose and Donna are tragic, but the journeys to get there are framed in terms of joy and excitement.
The next showrunner, Steven Moffat, preferred happy endings. Companions had previously been married off (Susan, Vicki, Jo, Leela, Peri) as they left the show. Amy Pond got married and stayed, travelling with her husband. This was a leap forward, but unfortunately the following series’ pregnancy storyline was handled poorly and attempts to deal with its repercussions were not successful either. Clara, the next companion, dared to be like the Doctor but unlike Donna managed to both die and have a happy ending.
Moffat enjoyed Immortal LGBT+ Women Having Adventures in Space so much that he used it again for Bill Potts in Series 10. An important aspect of both characters’ storylines is that they suffer a terrible fate, but the version of Doctor Who in which companions die is rejected in favour of one where they get what they live happily ever after. Moffat, a comedy writer to his core, was unwilling to make Doctor Who a story where travelling on the TARDIS left you in a worse place. Davies also tried to give his companions happy endings of sorts to ameliorate their loss.
If we look at the populist peaks of the show, Doctor Who has never been overwhelmingly cynical. Whenever it’s been taken in a darker direction it usually rejects that approach in favour of a lighter balance. In Season 21 the show put its characters through a series of almost unrelenting grimness (‘The Awakening’, the story where a demonic entity attempts to get an entire village to slaughter each other is the light and fluffy one) culminating in the Fifth Doctor’s heroic regeneration story ‘The Caves of Androzani’– voted the best Doctor Who story in several polls – where the Doctor goes to extreme lengths to save his companion and distances himself from the violence that surrounds him.
And then in the next story ‘The Twin Dilemma’, the Sixth Doctor strangles his companion.

Why Doctor Who can’t sustain dark storytelling

Taking ‘Grimdark’ storytelling to mean stories in which violence and misery is perpetuated throughout the story universe in a seemingly never-ending cycle, that period in the show’s history is a perfect example of it. Why diminish one of the finest stories ever by immediately negating the heroism involved? Why would you have the main character reject the violence that he’d become a part of only to immediately embrace it again? Among the many problems it means we have a Doctor/companion relationship that seems grim at best. Why would you keep travelling with someone who strangled you, refused to apologise and then continually harangues and shouts at you? I don’t watch Doctor Who to see the companion trapped in an abusive relationship. I also don’t think it’s a coincidence that the ratings went down as the production team systematically removed as much hope from the show as possible, ridding it of that great spirit of adventure. After ‘The Twin Dilemma’,the show was put on hiatus, and ultimately cancelled.   
Which brings me to the current version of the show.
I don’t think Jodie Whittaker is miscast or that the current version of the show is woke nonsense – which is a relief because I think using the phrase ‘woke nonsense’ unironically is quite the red flag. I think that the enthusiasm Jodie Whittaker has for the part hasn’t been used well, because we currently have a Doctor who is great at showing unabashed joy travelling the universe, but whose stories lean towards grimdark and don’t give her anything approaching ‘Everybody lives!’
One of the most lauded episodes in Series 11 is ‘Rosa’, which was co-written by Malorie Blackman and showrunner Chris Chibnall. In it, the TARDIS crew see Rosa Parks in the run-up to her being arrested for violating segregation laws, and need to stop Krasko – a mass murderer from the future – interfering in this event and stopping it from happening.
The inclusion of Krasko makes an interesting and depressing point in this story, and I’d be fascinated to know the villain’s development in the writing process. For what we have here is a story about an important act of defiance that changed human history, and is celebrated for its impact, alongside an acknowledgement that there will still be racists in the future. In fact, there will be racists who murder 2,000 people in the future. Racism and its associated violence is not, the episode says, going to go away.
In isolation this might seem like optimism tempered with caution, but since Chris Chibnall became showrunner, edgy, provocative ideas have crept in and given stories a cynical edge. Small moments have a cumulative effect, such as Epzo’s story about his mother in ‘The Ghost Monument’, Robertson surviving ‘Arachnids in the UK’ without learning any moral lessons and indeed likely to cause more suffering, ‘Kerblam!’ ending with the system that blew up an innocent woman being allowed to continue (while closing the warehouse for four weeks and offering employees two weeks’ holiday pay), Daniel Barton escaping freely in ‘Spyfall’ while the Doctor wipes the memories of someone doomed to die, ‘Orphan 55’ shows us the unavoidable destruction of the human race, as does ‘Ascension of the Cybermen’. Under Moffat, we had some episodes ending with cynical quips that left a bad taste in the mouth, but under Chibnall the bad taste is there before the outro quip.
Series 11 showed us a joyful Doctor in a nasty universe, and the latter regularly overwhelms the former, but at least ended with Graham and Ryan clearly rejecting murder as a solution. Series 12 was less focussed on real-world evils, and uses them on the fringes of its storytelling (with the Doctor now seemingly embroiled in the universe’s cynicism, using Nazis to imprison a Master now played by a British Indian actor), but we’re still getting real issues reflected back at us along with the message that the Doctorcannot sort this, which is based on the false assumption that this is what Doctor Who is for.
I hope that this is building towards a reversal, that the Thirteenth Doctor gets her Androzani moment where she gets to take a stand against everything that she’s seen. However, we have now had a fully grimdark finale as the lasting impression of Doctor Who for nine months. ‘The Timeless Children’ has proven controversial for its approach to continuity; as well as the retcon of the Doctor’s history this was a ‘Twin Dilemma’(also the last story in its season) to ‘The Day of the Doctor’s Androzani. The heroism is now nullified. When we watch ‘The Day of the Doctor’and the day is saved at the end of the story, now we know all the Doctor has done is defer those deaths (those two billion children’s deaths) and the cycle of violence will continue. At the end of ‘The Timeless Children’the following is presented to us as the good guys winning:
The heroine cannot bring herself to destroy the animated corpses of her entire species, so Joe from Derry Girls has to do it for her. An entire planet now a lifeless husk. The main character’s centuries of trauma are revealed. Their best friend is now a genocidal maniac.

This is Doctor Who in 2020: violent, cynical, cyclical. A mirror when it should be a window. If Series 13 repeats these trends then I fear history may repeat itself once more. But then, what is Doctor Who mostly about if not seeing a cycle of oppression and then breaking it?

A small fic of Chase racelott coming back home to Dawsonville?
This is a little bit talking head-y, so bear with me. But I thought it would be interesting if the way the Next Gens like Chase or Ryan perceived Cruz at the Florida 500–confident, dominant, and ready to win on her first night out–was different than the way she initially perceived herself. And if maybe the Next Gens themselves don’t feel anywhere near as bulletproof and racer-destined as Cruz imagined them to be.
“McQueen was late again,” Chase informs his grandfather. He’s not really sure why he says it, except that he was also late just now, and his grandfather has always cared about that sort of thing, and Chase has always been a little bit afraid of him. “Missed qualifying and everything. Guess he was tearing down Appalachia or something, I don’t really know.”
He and Laney had snickered about it before the race—just a little bit. The way two race cars might if, for instance, they were new to the game and they knew they needed to make some friends. And there’s no bonding activity like the misfortune of others. After the race, McQueen and the Ramirez girl solidly the center of attention, neither Chase nor Laney had known quite what their next step ought to be.
Make friends with Ramirez, probably, but the thing about being new to the Piston Cup was you sorta had a blank check to do what you would. Storm was going to win, because he had the most experience; as near as Chase could tell his job right now was to force all the veterans out—then they’d really go racing. Until then, Storm would win. And win. And win. And Chase would wait.
Then, of course, Ramirez. It’s exciting and she’s friendly and Chase likes her. Up until he realizes that she won: She won her first race, she’s not Storm, and suddenly the heat is on. And so Chase realizes that the honeymoon is over. From here on out, every race he doesn’t win will only make the question loom bolder, brighter, and ruder: What about you?
When will Chase get his win?
And Chase doesn’t know the answer to that. One look at Laney after the 500, after the glow and spectacle wears off and the fireworks are only paper husks on the ground and all the cheering fans turn to sluggish brake lights on the freeway, and Chase knows he’s not sure either.
So they share a laugh—a memory of the last moment before their lives got a whole lot scarier.
“Remember that time—“ Chase begins.
Laney swallows hard. “T minus nine and McQueen’s off in the forest somewhere,” Laney continues the thought. Though the reminiscence is from only that morning, it feels like a lifetime ago. It was a lot easier to be confident when you didn’t have to beat anyone.
When Chase realizes how counterintuitive that sounds—how much an insult to the Cup it must be, for a racer like him to not be racing for the win—real terror shudders through his drivetrain. What if this was all a big mistake? Storm clearly had it all together, and the Ramirez girl too. She’d wanted to win right off the bat; she’d seemed so confident; she’d been hustling for her shot there whole life. Lightning McQueen picked her.
By contrast, Chase was just born this way. Mere months ago, a racing family met him at the factory, and now here he is. He doesn’t really know why. And he’d wasted all that time rushing in circles, turning left, not thinking about any of it, and then Ramirez comes and suddenly he needs his answers.
He asks his hauler to take the long way home to Dawsonville.
And now here he is, afraid to tell his grandfather he’s sorry he’s late.
“You don’t know nothing, do you, son?” his grandfather drawls.
His grandfather is, frankly, disturbingly on point.
“I just—“
“What you think we did, the whole lot of us, in the Georgia hills?” asks his grandfather. The frown he’d been wearing since the moment Chase rolled up had budged only enough to let his words slither out. Chase can’t imagine that expression might translate to “I’m so pleased to see you, my talented and wonderful offspring.”
“I—“
“Junior, River, all them had their runs up north, and we had ours,” Chase’s grandfather continues. “They’d stop on by for fuel whenever we’d all head down to Florida for the beach runs. Sometimes we’d trade goods—but of course, Dawsonville’s has always been better.”
“I don’t really—“ Chase confesses, mildly panicked.
“Moonshine,” his grandfather deadpans.
“Oh!”
“You’re of moonshiner stock. Racing stock. You know what that means?”
For all the day’s existential panic, Chase brightens at this line of inquiry considerably. It seems pretty clear to him. His family’s got history. He’s one of them. Ergo, “I’m a race—“
“Not a damn thing, ‘less you decide it does,” his grandfather finishes. “If it worked like that, we’d all still be wheelbarrows.”
Chase wonders, dazedly, if you can be fired from your family. He wonders if he’ll be fired from the Racelotts before or after he’s fired from Vitoline.
Ever perceptive, Chase’s grandfather seems to glean his train of thought. He says, “I ain’t saying you’ll never be like Awesome Bill. I’m just saying it’s you who gotta decide what you’re gonna chase.”
“I don’t know,” Chase confesses. “The world is… so big, and like, and I’m—“
“So start small,” says his grandfather. When Chase, unmoving, says nothing, stays waiting for the dispensation of some sage wisdom, his grandfather rolls his eyes. “Work backwards,” he says. “Go ask McQueen if what he learned in the hills was worth it. Go find your answers.”
Chase ponders this for a moment. “So, uh. Do you think I’ll maybe… find them… by next Sunday?”
At last, Chase’s grandfather softens. It’s like he finally sees something in Chase he doesn’t mind looking at.
He says, “Not if you make a habit of being late.”
Chase chuckles. “Yes, sir.”
