When you're rewatching some of Yu-Gi-Oh duel monsters while at your aunt's house (she has the fancy on demand stuff) and having read the japanese translations of the old lines, the english version hits so different now
Japanese version kaiba actually seems like not quite as much of an asshole? There's so much nuance missing in the english version
And Joey... Bless my heart I grew up with the localized Brooklyn accent but knowing what I'm missing in Japanese is oof 😣 I'm torn between the two versions of that character

German Dark Knight quests
This is an English translation of the German script for the level 45 and 50 dark knight quests (and some extra bits at the end), meant as a supplement to the translation of the Japanese script found in this and this post showcasing the large differences between Japanese and English Fray’s characterisation. Since haillenarte mentioned in their posts that the German script usually stays closer to the Japanese script than the English script does, and I can’t read Japanese but can read German, I decided to check out the German version and translate it for comparison.
UPDATE: Please check out my translation website! I have the entire dark knight questline translated on there, including an updated translation of what’s in this post, as well as many other scenes from the rest of the game.
Since the English script is already in the other posts I won’t put it in here too, but I will separate it into the same blocks as the other posts for ease of comparison. I’m also sticking to gender neutral pronouns for the WoL, though German is a highly gendered language so all the screenshots of the German script will reflect me playing as a male au ra. It’s been a hot minute since I formally studied German so if you spot any glaring mistakes by all means correct me!
Level 45 quest - What must be said
Tumblr media
Fray: It’s your life and it ends again every minute... I’ve been thinking again about what you told me about the voice. Fray: Someone is trying to get through to you. Someone who needs your protection. But we don’t know any more. Fray: We have to perform another ritual as soon as possible. Maybe that will give us a clue about who the voice belongs to. Fray: After all, the voice resonates within your heart. Do you have someone you want to protect? More than anyone else? Fray: ...Sorry. I don’t feel very well lately... I’m alright. I’m just a bit tired. Fray: So, when you’re ready, we’ll perform the next ritual. Fray: Show me what you’ve learned. I’ll wait for you at Moraby Drydocks.
Tumblr media
Fray: Do you remember? The sea... Fray: I told you before that I went on a journey once. With someone who... A terrible danger awaited us at sea. Fray: I wanted to stop them. But we’d already drifted too far apart. There was no stopping them from getting on that damn boat. Fray: It was like I was dying. They were the person I wanted to protect more than anything in the world. But my words didn't get through to them. That's why I'm...
Tumblr media
???: What’s that? Isn’t the Maelstrom there to help us? ...I’m in need, goddammit! Styrnlona: The Maelstrom isn’t responsible for that. You should turn to the Yellowjackets when reporting something like stolen wares. Demanding dealer: The Yellowjackets... Before they get around to my case my newborn son will be an experienced sailor! Perhaps even admiral! Styrnlona: Hey, you! Aren’t you [your rank at the Maelstrom] [Name]?
Tumblr media
Strynlona: You did us all a great favour when you defeated the primal Leviathan. The citizens of Limsa Lominsa are forever grateful. Demanding dealer: Whaaaat? There’s a real hero standing before me! Demanding dealer: You’re a godsend. I’m in a real bind and need help. Demanding dealer: A nasty Qiqirn has stolen all my wares! [cry] What do I tell my clients? [sob] I’m going to lose my good name as trader! [sniff] Fray: Do you remember what I told you last time? You can’t help everyone. You can’t carry all the world’s suffering on your shoulders. Fray: The Yellowjackets will take on his case soon enough. You should worry about your training as a dark knight instead and find a worthy opponent. There’s more important things at stake... Demanding dealer: Don’t leave me high and dry! If you don’t help me, no-one will!
Tumblr media
>Yes, or nobody will help him.
Tumblr media
Demanding dealer: You’re truly a hero! Thank you! Demanding dealer: The Qiqirn that stole my wares has to be some kind of leader or chief... It’s bigger and stronger than the others.
>No, I can’t help everyone.
Tumblr media
Demanding dealer: But... didn’t you just say you were looking for worthy opponents? Demanding dealer: The Qiqirn that stole my wares is a real big guy! Bigger and stronger than the others. A leader or chief, I would say.
Tumblr media
Demanding dealer: I saw it walking towards the salt strand, the Qiqirn have a camp there. Please bring my wares back! Fray: It always ends like this... When nobody wants to help, the heroes have to go... You'll never become a dark knight like this.
Tumblr media
Fray: Cut that thieving Qiqirn down to size. Doesn’t matter how pathetically it begs for mercy. It shouldn’t have stolen the merchant’s wares... Fray: We’ll use the opportunity to prepare the next ritual. Show me everything you’ve learned as a dark knight.
Tumblr media
[Duty battle dialogue] Fray the Dark: There’s quite a lot of them... This’ll be a right bloodbath. Fray the Dark: Now we just need to get the wares! Fray the Dark: The wares are definitely in this chest...
Tumblr media
Fray: We... have the wares... [groan] Bring them to the merchant... [huff] Fray: Me? I’m just a bit... exhausted... [groan]. Go ahead, I’ll be right behind you... Fray: Bring it to an end...
Tumblr media
Demanding dealer: Hello, hero! Do you have my wares? Demanding dealer: Yes, that’s the stuff! Thank you, thank you. Let’s see if everything is there. Demanding dealer: Nooooo! In llymlaen’s name, I can’t sell these like this! Demanding dealer: Those Qiqirn put their dirty hands all over everything! I can’t offer this to my customers! Or even worse, they’ll demand a discount! Demanding dealer: What should i do? It’s the end for me! I’m ruined! I can say goodbye to that vacation in Costa del Sol... Demanding dealer: I know! I’ve got a hero standing right in front of me! You’ll deliver me new wares in a snap! Demanding dealer: The skin of a dangerous monster... A treasure from a trap-filled ruin... A lock of hair from a primal...
Tumblr media
Fray: ENOUGH!! Fray: Does it ever end? Is Eorzea populated entirely by children? Can nobody do anything on their own anymore? Does everyone have to keep begging the heroes for help? Fray: [Name] is also just a [your race]! With their own feelings and interests. Axe blades and thunder magic also hurt them! Nobody thinks about that, huh? Fray: We keep fighting for other people... Like back then, at open sea, against that watery primal... Fray: “We’re not chosen! Let the chosen one fight!” - Pah, you’re just hiding behind those words! What are you doing for Eorzea anyway? Fray: If you lot didn’t keep bringing in your troublesome business [Name] would’ve long since been a more experienced dark knight! Ugh, for real!
Tumblr media
Demanding dealer: Who just blows their lid like that? I’m terribly sorry, adventurer... Styrnlona: What the... [Maelstrom rank] [Name], your anger isn’t entirely unfounded, but... Styrnlona: ...A short walk sounds like the right thing to cool your head. Have a good day.
Tumblr media
Fray: That just had to be said. Don’t you think? Fray: Seriously, such an ungrateful lot...
Tumblr media
>All that matters is the voice.
Tumblr media
Fray: Right, the voice. You can’t ignore it. That would mean ignoring your own existence. Fray: I even know who the voice belongs to... Fray: But I can’t tell you who it is. You have to find out yourself. Fray: Well, let’s continue. Stick your hand out...
>I want to become a real dark knight as soon as possible.
Tumblr media
Fray: You’re already a real dark knight, [Name]. The dark power, that’s real. Fray: But remember what I told you in the Brume? That you have to face your feelings if you want to walk the path of the dark knight - if you want to survive it? Fray: You’re not at the goal yet. There’s a place in your heart you still haven’t reached. But the voice will help you with that. Fray: Well, let’s continue. Stick your hand out...
>You’re completely right. It had to be said.
Tumblr media
[Fray makes a surprised gesture] Fray: You also think I’m right? That’s great, [Name]! Fray: I know it’s not in your nature to lash out like that. But you can rest easy leaving that to me. Fray: I’m glad you’re finally realizing it... Fray: More important right now is that you find out who the voice belongs to. And what its true meaning is. Stick your hand out...
Tumblr media
???: The weak call for you, [Name]. As they always do. ???: They call, they scream, they wail... So loud that you can’t hear your own voice... The pain... The anger... The sadness... Nobody wants to hear about those. ???: But you. You will listen to it. ???: You hear my prayers.
Tumblr media
Fray: [Name]. Fray: You heard the voice, right? Fray: You don’t have to tell me what you heard. But I’ll ask you one thing: Are you prepared to give up everything to answer that voice? Fray: Your status, your fame, your fortune - everything? Only after losing everything will we have the freedom to do everything. If you’re willing to do that, then... come with me! Leave this Eorzea! Fray: Here you will never be able to fulfil your purpose. To be truly free. Here you will forever have to concern yourself with others. But if you turn your back on Eorzea - you can go your own way. Fray: You don’t have to answer right now. Meet me at the usual place when you’re ready. I’ll wait for you.
Level 50 quest - The knights’ core
Tumblr media
Fray: [Name]... There you are again. I was already expecting you. Fray: ...Ugh... We don't have much time left. We have to travel again soon... Or it'll be too late. Fray: Too late for you... You don't understand it yet, but I want to help you. I'm starting to doubt whether you're really prepared... But we'll see. Fray: We'll meet at the Gates of Judgement. Call my name and I'll come.
Tumblr media
???: That voice! Isn't that [Sir/Lady] [Name]? The hero of the Scions of the Seventh Dawn? Brave knight: Forgive me. I belong to Lord Drillemont's troops from Whitebrim Fort. Everyone in my regiment knows your name. Brave knight: It can't be a coincidence that I meet you here. It's the Fury's work! She wants you to help us. Nervous knight: A bit to the south from here lives a crowd of Gigas. They've been showing themselves in the region increasingly often and frequently raid caravans. It’s likely they intend to expand their territory. Nervous knight: The troops at Whitebrim Fort are well armed, but the Gigas are numerous and better suited to the cold than us. Nervous knight: They're better organised than other Gigas too. If we can disable their commander their advances will likely cease for now. Brave knight: Indeed. Our commander underestimates the danger and refuses to send troops. Please, won't you help us and hunt down the Gigas commander? Coeus the Loudmouthed, they call the beast. Then our problems will be solved.
Tumblr media
Durendaire knights: Please help us. Durendaire knights: What could be more important? Please help us! Nervous knight: Thank you! You’re a hero! Brave knight: We believe we have a trail. Follow us!
Tumblr media
Fray: That’s enough.... That’s.... ENOUGH!!!
Tumblr media
Brave knight: That’s the place. We believe Coeus the Loudmouthed will come through the pass. Did I mention he’s always accompanied by his two bodyguards? They of course also have to be defeated. Brave knight: Keep watch a little further down the pass. The leader of the Gigas won’t be long. May the Fury preserve you!
Tumblr media
Brave knight: You’ve defeated the Gigas’ leader! Thank Halone and you! Brave knight: That should stop their advance. We can easily deal with the few remaining unorganised Gigas. And if not, we know who we can ask. Brave knight: You have our thanks. We will inform Lord Drillemont of your deeds. Brave knight: And our comrades will hear of your heroic deeds too! They’ll all look up to you, if they don’t already. Brave knight: The troops at Whitebrim Fort can use any boost to morale they can get. Your willingness to help us will bring new courage. Brave knight: That reminds me... Could you perhaps autograph my shield? My name is...
Tumblr media
???: March, march! Return to base immediately! Brave knight: What happened? Why the rush? Capable knight: Orders from above. Lord Drillemont heard that we’re working with [Name] and ordered us to return immediately. With them in custody, in fact. Brave knight: In custody? What’s the meaning of this? Capable knight: There have been... accusations. People are saying they’ve been spotted in the Brume... speaking with the corpse of a convicted heretic. Capable knight: I don’t believe it of course, but we both know how serious such accusations are.
Tumblr media
Brave knight: Surely someone is trying to play us for fools... I mean, speaking with a corpse? Do they take us for idiots? Capable knight: Have you heard the accusations, [Sir/Lady]? They... have a certain weight, since they come from Temple Knights. Capable knight: It might be necessary... Ah, purely as a formality of course... To ask you to remove your weapon.
Tumblr media
Fray: Ha, ha! “Remove my weapon”? After what happened in Ul’dah? Are they out of their minds?
Tumblr media
Fray: Tomorrow will be the best day in your life, [Name]. Your breakfast will taste better than any meal you’ve ever had. Fray: That is, when you finally manage to look the truth in the eye. [Name], get ready for the evacuation of your soul...
Tumblr media
Fray: You know already. You know whose voice speaks in your heart. You know who has to shoulder more suffering than anyone else in the world... You know who you have to save! Fray: Don’t act so surprised. Of course Fray was stone dead, right from the start. But you wanted it to be different. Fray: A sword, a crystal... All that was missing was a teacher. So you made yourself one. Fray: The soul crystal of the Dark Knight, in which all his experiences were stored. Your aether and repressed feelings... The pain that you locked deep inside your heart... All that suffering that you have to endure as a hero.... The fear that the Champion of Eorzea is not allowed to show... Those are the ingredients from which you made a new Fray. Fray: A mentor who could show you the feelings slumbering in your heart. Who could express these feelings for you, like you never could. Fray: You still don’t want to believe it, but you can’t deny it. You can’t deny what we have achieved. Fray: Haven’t I been good to you? I’ve given you a choice that none of your so-called friends ever gave you. Your so-called friends in the Scions or the Eorzean Alliance. Fray: The choice to say no. To not help. To think of yourself. To save yourself. I’ve given your innermost desire to say no a voice, and made sure you heard it too. Fray: Open your eyes! Look at me! Are you seeing it now? I... am you!
Tumblr media
[Fray takes on your name] [Name]: Everything that happened until now was your story... [Name]: ...And everything that happens from now on is mine!
Tumblr media
[Duty battle dialogue] Dark shadow: Fight me! As hard as you can! You can’t kill me, no matter how hard you try. Dark shadow: You can’t defeat me. I’m a part of you. Drillemont: [Name], I’ll help you! You helped us in our greatest time of need too. Dark shadow: Help them? Bet they’ll have to save you again?
Tumblr media
Dark shadow: I... we were so close...
Tumblr media
Dark shadow: That is exactly the problem! Dark shadow: Do you even know how ridiculous this struggle must look to the others? Dark shadow: Free yourself from the pain!
Tumblr media
[Battle over] [Name]: After a battle everything else in life is turned down in comparison - you can deal with anything. [Name]: I made you strong. I have... given you all your strength... [Name]: Recognise the irony of your existence: Your strength is the cause of your pain. It makes you a hero, and as a hero you’re doomed to suffer.
Tumblr media
Knight: [Name]! We’re with you! Cenota: [Name]! Believe in yourself! Believe in us! Clotairion: We know who you really are. Don’t forget that!
Tumblr media
[Name]: They stand at your side... while you carry their pain. [Name]: But that’s what you want, isn’t it? You want to suffer. You’re always looking for someone whose pain you can carry. That’s your nature. [Name]: The nature of a dark knight. It’s your fate. Nobody will ever do it better than you... [Name]: You seek this pain. You seek that suffering. [Name]: You’ve brought the last offering. So take this reward... [Name]: [Name]... [Name]: [Name]... I’m the part of you incapable of being a hero. Hide me. Deep in your heart. [Name]: I will speak to you again. Because I know you’re stronger than me.
Tumblr media
[Name]: What belongs together comes together. [Name]: I’ll return back into you and give you the power to protect the world. I’ll cry your tears. I’ll carry your burden. I’ll be your rage. [Name]: Let’s go on a journey together again.
Tumblr media
Capable knight: We have you back, Halone be praised! For a moment there I thought we’d lost you to your innermost demons. Capable knight: I don’t really understand what happened here, but Lord Drillemont doesn’t seem too angry. Fortunately nobody was permanently injured... Capable knight: First up I’ll make sure Fray’s body is given an appropriate burial. Capable knight: And you? Are you sure everything is okay? You were a little... confused. But what am I implying... Forgive me, my lord. And farewell.
Notes and commentary:
"Das ist dein Leben und es endet jede Minute aufs Neue” is a quote from the German dub of Fight Club apparently, though I never watched it in any language so I have no idea what the context is.
German has formal and informal pronouns, but the only character in these quests to use formal pronouns for your character is the capable knight. That said, everyone still speaks fairly politely to you except Fray, who speaks so casually to everyone it crosses into being rude and overly familiar.
Personally I like German Fray a lot. They feel like the best of both worlds, keeping the emotional vulnerability of Japanese Fray while adding some of the bitter anger English Fray has. They also have a certain awkwardness to them that is really endearing, and which I’m not sure really comes across in just these two quests even with the lame breakfast oneliner. The lv35 quest has this exchange which I really like.
Tumblr media
>That voice I heard. Who is speaking to me? >Why were you being accused by the High Tribunal anyway? Hmmm? -->Wild playing and endangering the elderly - shouldn’t that be punished severely? (This is the excuse the temple knights used to take away the old woman’s granddaughter)
Tumblr media
Fray: R-really? But things like that just happen when kids play... Fray: A-haha, I get it! You made a joke! You really got me there. Seriously though, what do you want to ask me?
What stood out to me about German Fray next to the English one (and my limited knowledge of the Japanese one) is that they’re a bit of a jokester, though it doesn’t really show in the last two quests because they’re getting desperate. When you free the prisoners from the Amal’jaa in the lv40 quest duty, the enemy yells “You’ll pay for this with your blood!” and Fray responds “Send me an invoice!”
Tumblr media
There’s also the exchange with Fray when you learn what happened to the old woman whose grandchild was taken in the lv30 quest, which in English goes like this
Fray: They might spare the girl, you know. Leave her with a few scars and a lifelong lesson. Fray: ...Or, we could beat every single one of them within an ilm of their lives and rescue the girl. You’d like that, wouldn’t you? [You nod, and Fray smiles] Fray: I knew you would.
and in German goes like this
Tumblr media
Fray: Are you the dark knight that will stand up for this old woman? Think about it carefully, since it might cost you your head. Fray: Think about the enemies you’re facing, and the wounds they will inflict on you. Think about how you could just turn around and go lie in a warm bed, and nobody would suspect you. [You nod, and Fray smiles] Fray: I feared as much.
In the Japanese and English versions (and French, since French drk is just a direct translation of the English one) the original Fray legitimately lost his trial by combat, but in the German version the trial was rigged. The Ishgardian Citizen describes how Fray was winning until Halone herself struck him down with a pillar of fire - someone in the audience mumbled that it looked suspiciously like a Flare spell cast from the direction of the jury, but naturally the citizen immediately reported that heretic to the inquisition for doubting Halone’s judgement. The reason I even read the German version was because I got mad about translators making some shit up wholesale, but I have to admit I do like this particular thing that translators made up wholesale.
It also turns out Fray writing in the quest journal is unique to the English version! I really missed their commentary when I checked the German journal and it just wasn’t there. Another win for making shit up wholesale I suppose.
I’ve been told the scripts for different languages of the game are written concurrently rather than first in Japanese and then translated, so it’s not entirely fair to claim any one of them as the original that the others are unfaithful translations of. Even if that’s the case I still don’t think the different language scripts should be so wildly different in meaning from each other, but putting that aside I do like having these varying takes on Fray to rotate in my head and I wouldn’t have any complaints if the way they were implemented was through supplementary material like short stories or a manga or something.
I also think each version of Fray has something good going for them, and that they become better when put next to each other. I like how the English script has even your repressed feelings be so repressed that they cling to their front of smug superiority and righteous anger until the very end, and only manage to really express themselves in the journal where nobody would ordinarily look. I like Japanese Fray spilling their whole entire heart out and sounding permanently on the verge of crying from how desperate they are despite their imposing appearance. And my personal favourite is German Fray for how much they feel like genuinely just a regular person who’s in too deep and has no choice but to keep doing what they think is best.

Being this time of year, I wanted to share my translation of Oz's letter to Echo from the 15th anniversary event and her response because I haven't seen it anywhere else and frankly I need to finally scream over it publicly.
DISCLAIMER: I do not know Japanese. I ran these through Google Translate, DeepL, and a website or two. But, as you can see, I used multiple sources on multiple occasions months apart, which adjusted the results due to the updates the tools had gotten. I've chipped away at this for about 18 months. Also, I really focused on specific research for a few words, which I note below. I hope this makes it as accurate as it can possibly be.
I apologize for the image quality, my scanner is broken.
Tumblr media
To Eko-chan, ……Writing a letter to Eko-chan is….kind of nerve-wracking. Sorry if there are any typos. That day when we went to see the St. Bridget’s Day festival together, you said that you were “just an echo”. When I first met you, I might have said, “That’s not true!”, But now I think, “That’s fine.” Whether or not it’s a reverberation, Eko-chan is the one and only beautiful sound to me. ……This is second-hand from Gil. I was happy when he said “There’s nothing wrong with being fake” to me. When I’m with you, it’s different from when I’m with Alice or Gil. It makes me feel kind of uneasy. I want you to show me different emotions such as “happiness” or “joy”. Like the fireworks we saw that day, I want to go look at the sights you don’t know about together. Hehe… So, at that time, ———will you let me take your hand again? “Echo.”
Tumblr media
To Oz-sama, Thank you for your letter. No one has ever sent a letter to me personally. I was very surprised. I was even more surprised by the content. Oz-sama, a lot of the sentences you wrote were embarrassing to read. Do you know how many times I had to stop reading because my face got hot? The rest is not well-explained. You said when you’re with me, “it makes me feel kind of uneasy,” but what does that mean? It’s a strange coincidence, but when I’m with you, I also feel “uneasy” and it's something I can't even describe, so please tell me the true meaning of that word next time.
NOTES:
唯一 無二 [Yuiistu Muni] — I invariably got this as "one and only" until recently. While that's what I see listed as the translation first in most cases, I also see it means "unique" or "irreplaceable" and the like. So it could also be something like "uniquely beautiful".
むず痒い [Muzugayui] — This word has become my arch-nemesis. The main translation I find is "itchy", which just does not make sense in English sentences. I've also found it can mean "creepy" or "uneasy feeling", and a friend who looked into it for me saw someone say it can mean an indescribable state of mind. I went through several options before I settled on "uneasy".
君 [Kimi] — After learning about the various words for "you" and their meanings recently, I revisited this just to see which ones I saw here. I kind of lost it when I found this at the end of Oz's letter. Now, this can be used in several circumstances (in another letter, I saw him use it in a quote from Break), but it can be used by a boy talking to his girlfriend. I will also note that I have no reference to the Japanese text in the manga, so for all I know this is what he normally says to her and I'm overreacting.
エコー [Echo] — I just wanted to note that these were actually voiced at the events apparently. So I like to think about that at the end of his letter...
私 [Watashi] — Because it's noteworthy, Echo uses a first-person pronoun, which she only does after that "I am" moment in the story, I'm told.
Now, some background. I was ordering various things from the event, including the booklet which contains the Letters From Oz to the main cast, and a few of the random pack responses, which I was extremely lucky to get Echo’s from.
I actually got the responses first, which meant I was left guessing on what Oz wrote. Without context, I really couldn't decipher the results very well. I thought there might be a vague reference to the ship, which is Word of God confirmed canon, but neither of them had any clue yet.
But, then I got Oz's letter. I think I literally screamed when I was reading the first pass through Google. It makes me so upset that you see next to nothing of them in canon, and literally nothing in the official artwork. The fact that you only get to see Echo with her abusers just enrages me.
"But Noise is feeling better." NO. It's not okay, it's not nice. She deserves so much better both inside and out of canon. Don't even get me started on Vincent...
Anyway, I'm very happy because this is the closest there is to having Something for them in the midst of that literal nothing.
EDIT: WOW THANKS TUMBLR, apparently my draft posted when I wasn't actually finished getting this together. There may be a few other changes. Sigh...
EDIT 2: Okay, this is the final version. Sorry about that.

BGM: Venus Peter - New World
I worked late today. This morning I read Dan SHAO's book in a halfway. I thought it must be a masterpiece once again. I've got an interest in a Japanese translator Kazuko Fujimoto's works besides of Haruki Murakami's ones through reading this. About Kazuko Fujimoto, I just read the novels by Richard Brautigan by her translation so I have never learned her essays and critics. By this book, I have learned that she has written the discrimination and feminism in America. She also wrote some books about those issues I heard. I reserved one of those books by her by the library's website. If possible, I want to read various Brautigan's works through her translation again by this chance. It is really grateful for me to read/meet various authors and books by any books, any writers by following their roots. I remember... at my teenage days, when I was into Haruki Murakami, I also tried some the Beatles' tunes and Jazz. I also tried to watch Godard's old movies. Indeed, some critics say Haruki's literature is not political/serious, but sometimes ambitious critics find this kind of political aspect in his works.
This afternoon I heard this news. On the "Global Gender Gap Report 2023" from the World Economic Forum, the result say to us that Japan has still serious inequality between men and women. I have to read about this to understand the core of this problem. But about this topic, I can remember that I have been bullied a lot by the comment "Be a man" and "Are you a real man?" etc. This "masculine" society can give a certain mental pressure/difficulty on the man in a way. I believe so. But I also have to see that it is not the same as the difficulties this country's women have had to face. That's difficult/sensitive... Indeed, this is a foreign movie but I remember a Korean movie "Kim Jiyoung born 1982". That movie clearly shows how women have to face their difficulties in their life in this society. I guess it can be the same in Japan. It must be irrational... then, how can we suggest/declare each voice into any public common opinion? I believe that it can be "personal is political".
https://www.weforum.org/reports/global-gender-gap-report-2023/
Now I feel that this era has been changing. I have been said a lot as "Be natural" and "Don't be weird". It has been really troublesome life for me. But now, it is really "diversity" era. Now we can't divide our sexuality as "male" and "female". We have to see how our personal/individual sexualities can be sensitively... But I can't say anything about this because I don't know well. About autism, now people see that autism is on the spectrum/gradation as a main point of view. This means that autistic people and neurotypical people are never completely different as human beings and aliens. We are the same at the root... Suddenly I thought this. Now is the era we have to find each person's identity by any single person. It means not the one any establishment or society can give orthodox identities to us. So it can provide new difficulties to us (it can make new "identity crisis"). But it is also the era everyone can live each person's precious single life by the inner voice from our core. But I need to think about this steadily.
Now is the era every person can quest each one's identity. It must be a kind of "custom-made" identity. Is it a way of liberation/freedom? Or is it a beginning of new nightmare era? How the stories/narratives we are living can influence on those identities we have? On thinking about these things and writing English memo at a lunchbreak, Suddenly I was talked by a person. "I always see you, and am getting embraced by you!". He said so. I am glad to hear that. And I remember that another reader of this journal had bought Steve Silberman's book "Neurotribes" by reading my opinion. Ah, this journal, and my existence affects someone else... but it must be because YOU are always supporting me. You give me comments, and also read me. THANK YOU SO MUCH!

I glanced around, sighing, not knowing what to expect and seeing a different scenario from the one that I was used to seeing every day. There was a lot of people in the street, wandering through street markets, trying to get the best deal.
"This doesn't seem so bad." My boyfriend rubbed his hands together.
"It's not the town, it's the plan."  Lydia rolled her eyes as I chuckled. "Stiles. This could be the stupidest plan we've ever come up with. You're aware of that, right?"
"I'm aware it's not our best." His voice lowered.
"We are going to die." The three of us started walking.
"Are you saying that as a Banshee or you're just being pessimistic?"
"I'm saying it as a person who doesn't wanna die."
"Okay." Stiles's tiny gesture made my chest pound like crazy. He had grabbed my hand, scared I would get lost as there were many people. "Would you just mind restricting any talk of death to actual Banshee predictions?"
"This plan is stupid and we're going to die," Lydia said in a cheerful tone, attempting to make the hazel-eyed boy happy.
"Oh, thank you." He smirked.
It was night when we arrived at a building. The door was being watched by two men. They both smiled at us, especially eyeing Lydia and me, which made us feel a little bit uncomfortable.
"Estamos aquí para la fiesta." I murmured to them, letting them know that we were there for the party taking place inside the building.
One of them smirked, shaking their head as if to let us know that we weren't invited to go inside. I shifted my gaze to Stiles, who was searching for something inside one of the pockets of his trousers. As soon as he found what he wanted, he lifted it. A black card. And even though it seemed like just an item without much meaning, one of the men standing in front of us stopped smiling.
Stiles noticed that there was a camera just above them, lifting the card so whoever was behind it could see the object. Automatically, the door opened and the men had nothing more to do than let us go inside.
When the door closed behind us, we sighed, worried about what we could find. There was a small corridor, walls were of an intense red that was making my headache. And it seemed like the door in front of us and the walls embracing us shook.
As Stiles opened the door, we were hit with loud music, colourful lights and the smell of alcohol and sweat. Bodies ground against each other, following the compass of the music.
Stiles clutched my hand harder as his other hand rested on Lydia's arm. He didn't want us to get lost in the crowd. We ended up in front of the bar, where three drinks were placed in front of us even though we haven't ordered anything. I furrowed my eyebrows as Stiles sought money inside his pocket.
I felt a hand gripping my shoulder, and jerking around I was met with a man. "No. On the house." He offered us an insincere smile. "Most American teenagers don't cross the border to refuse a drink."
"We didn't come to drink." Lydia clarified, dropping what seemed like a bullet with a skull on it inside the drink.
Of course, we were taken out of the party, to the insides of the building where everything was dark and where now, a woman stood before us. "Severo hates this music. Me? I've always loved the music of youth." We were sitting in front of her, while there were men all around the room, keeping an eye on us. "This kind, especially. It has a savage energy."
"We're here for Derek Hale." I was the first one to speak aloud.
"Is that so?"
"We know you have him. We've heard you can be bought." Lydia was the one continuing while Stiles placed money on top of the table with a loud thump.
"It's 50,000 for Derek."
"Now, where does a teenage boy get money like this? Japanese mafia?" A woman behind us loaded her gun, making Lydia and I jump in our seats as a man did the same next to Stiles. "Not smart to come alone."
"What makes you think we came alone?" The boy next to me smirked, and I couldn't help but take the grin out of my face. Malia, Kira and Scott had come with us.
"You brought a wolf into my home?" She got up from her chair.
It was my turn to smirk. "No, of course not. How could we do that?" She seemed to relax, but only for a couple of seconds due to my following words. "We brought an Alpha."
"My friends..." She sighed as she turned around. "I don't think you're aware of your poor timing. Do you know what the dark moon is?"
"The part of the lunar phase when the moon is least visible in the sky," Lydia said in a robotic tone.
"But do you know its meaning?"
"Some people say it's a time of reflection. Or grief." I intervened.
She glanced at me. "Grief and loss, mija. I wonder why, when you and your friends have suffered so much loss, you would risk it again for someone like Derek Hale."
"'Cause, we don't like to lose."
One of the men next to Araya stopped us from continuing talking as he started speaking to someone on the other line of the walkie talkie. I couldn't help but have a tiny smile on my face when I heard the voice of my brother through it. "Stiles. Take 10 off the table."
As the button-nose boy did what my brother had asked for, I decided to speak up. "Maybe you should just take the deal." Lydia nodded her head, smiling at the woman in a sickeningly way.
"While I'm keen to follow the warning of a Banshee," She glanced at me. "And of course, the one of a Siren. I'm going to have to decline."
"Aaaa... Come on. Just give us Derek. You don't want him anyway. Haven't you noticed what a downer he is? No sense of humour, poor conversationalist." I tried to maintain a serious expression as Stiles's continued speaking. "Just come on, take the money."
Araya grabbed the walkie talkie once again. "Severo? Show them how the Calaveras negotiate." When Araya left the room, the three of us were manhandled by the men. And I wasn't a Banshee, but even I could feel that Scott, Kira and Malia were in great danger right now.
Thinking back, we ended up here because Scott had gone to Derek's lot, just to find that he wasn't there. He had found bullets, and sending a picture to Deaton, he had learnt that it was the mark of a family of hunters based out of Mexico. The Calaveras.
Lydia said that he wasn't sure he was dead, but she also wasn't sure if he was alive, which was perturbing.
"He is awake!" Kira informed us as Stiles and I got closer to my brother, who was lying down on the floor of a dirty and abandoned bathroom, where we have been taken. "Guys, he's awake."
"Scott, you okay?"
"Yeah." He tried to get up. "They don't have him. They don't have Derek."
"We know." I sighed, offering him a smile that he sent back, trying to let me know that he was alright. "But right now, they've got Lydia."
"Lydia? What do they want with Lydia?" He asked rapidly.
"We always have the same question and it is always answered the same way," I spoke as everyone glanced at me. "The power of a Banshee."
My brother rapidly got up from the floor, trying to open the door with his bare hands, which wasn't working.
"We already looked for a way out. I think a lot of people have." I furrowed my eyebrows as Kira talked, not sure of what she meant until I saw the marks on the walls. Marks of people who desperately tried to escape, scratching the walls with all of their strength.
Malia was leaning against a column. "I say when that door opens again, we take out whoever's standing in the way and run for it."
"What about Lydia?" Kira asked, and I sighed, knowing Malia's next words.
"What about her?"
"We're not leaving without her."
"Why not?"
Stiles shook his head, getting closer to her. "Because we don't leave without people. Remember, we talked about this? Rules of the wild kingdom don't apply to friends."
"Is that what you would do as a coyote, leave her for dead?"
"If she was weak and injured, yeah. If hunting had been bad that season, I would eat her. Then I'd leave."
"Mmm. Believe it or not, that's progress." I crossed my arms over my chest. "Stiles and I've been trying to explain everything to her."
"All right, guys, we're not dead yet." My brother interrupted. "And that means Araya wants something."
Kira glanced at the dark-haired boy standing by her side. "But if the Calaveras don't know where Derek is, that means they didn't take him from the loft. Right?"
"Maybe he left on his own." Stiles completed.
Scott glanced at the floor. "Maybe someone else got to him."
We couldn't continue with our theories as the door abruptly opened, showing three men that quickly walked to us. However, we were soon met with darkness.
When I opened my eyes, my head was aching and everything around me seemed to move in circles. My throat was dry as if I haven't drink anything in days. I gradually noticed that I was tied to a chair and that my brother was tied to another one, right next to me.
The door of the room where we were now opened, showing Araya with another man and Lydia. "Oh, God," Lydia murmured as she saw us.
"Let her go. Look... you've got me. Just let the others go." My brother begged as Araya smirked. Her gaze moved to me. My brother followed her gaze, and it seemed like he had noticed from the first time that they had taken me too. "Why did you bring her?"
Lydia was chained to another chair as Kira came inside the room, also chained while a man grabbed her. What was going on? "So, let me explain what's about to happen." The man grabbing Kira spoke. "This one, the fox, has an immunity to electricity. So she's going to turn the dial on the Alpha. If she doesn't, I turn the dial on the Banshee and the Siren."
"No. I'm not doing this." Kira tried to resist.
"I see. Are you sure? One of your friends has the power to heal. The other? Not so much." Severo smirked. "And the other one might end up dying." Who?
"What are you doing?" Scott glanced at the old woman. "Is this a game to you?"
"This is a test, lobito. Let's see if you pass. We're going to ask some questions. You answer them, nobody gets hurt." She walked around us, but I had to close my eyes and lean my head down as everything continued moving around me. "You don't answer, we turn on the dial."
When I looked up again, my brother was looking at the fox girl. "Do what they say. Okay. Whatever they want. I can take it."
"So... We don't know where Derek is. We want to find him as well. You know who took him."
"What?" My brother asked her. "How would I know that?"
"That doesn't sound like an answer to me."
"We don't know." Lydia intervened. "Why do you think we came here?"
"Kira, turn the dial." The woman ordered, but Kira shook her head. "Should we turn the dial on Lydia instead?"
My brother quickly spoke up. "No, no! Do it, Kira. Do it."
"Let's start at one." As soon as she said that, my brother grunted, his hands gripping the chair he was sitting on, trying not to scream in pain. "Tell me! Who actually has Derek? Who had a reason, a vendetta particular to the Hales?"
My brother continued panting. "I said I don't know."
"Oh, you don't know because you haven't figured it out yet. So think! Who could've taken him?" They turned the pain even stronger. "Who had the power? The power of a shapeshifter?"
"I-I don't know."
"Oh! Someone who could have turned without you knowing. Turned, but not by a bite!"
"I don't know!" He screamed.
"Y-you.." My voice was a mere whisper, but swallowing I was able to scream. "You are going to kill him!" There were tears in my eyes. "You are going to kill him! Stop!"
Araya laughed, shaking her head. "No, mi amor." She smirked. "You will die first." I furrowed my eyebrows, feeling the temperature in the room dropping. I was cold. "Something told me lobito right here was going to be hard to peel." Her gaze shifted to my brother. "Your beautiful sister has poison running through her blood." My brother quickly glanced at me. "The longer it stays in her system, the more difficult to take it out. She can end up having seizures." I closed my eyes for a couple of seconds, feeling dizzier than before. "Say the name, Scott."
"Kate." What? Kate Argent?
"Okay," I heard Araya's voice. "Stop the machine." Severo did as he was told as another two men walked to Scott and Lydia, freeing them. My brother quickly walked to me, extending his hands to touch me. However, my body started shaking and I couldn't make it stop. "Severo bring the shot."
The door of the room opened again, this time two men were grabbing Stiles and Malia. Stiles's eyes widened as he saw me shaking while being tied to a chair. Before he could step forward, the man grabbing him stopped his movements.
"Don't dare any of you to touch her now." Araya's strong voice resonated through the room. Severo walked to me, stabbing the side of my neck with the syringe. I could feel the liquid running down my blood. Severo unleashed me, lying me down on the freezing ground as my body continued shaking.
"W-What did you do to her?? You old troll." I wanted to smirk at Stiles's use of vocabulary, but I was too busy being scared of the constant shaking of my body.
"She will be alright," Araya replied. "She has more water in her body than a human. The liquid we injected plus the water will do a quick job in removing the poison."
"N-nice." I tried to sound sarcastic.
"Fever might be a side effect of the poison, but you will be alright."
Tumblr media
I watched as my brother talked to Araya while I was leaning against Roscoe with the others. Stiles was constantly asking me if I was alright. I felt a little weak, but my temperature was back to normal.
Scott finally walked to us. "So what now?" My boyfriend asked.
He shrugged. "She thinks she knows where we can find Derek."
"She gonna tell us where?" Malia asked while she leaned her head against my shoulder. My hand went up to play with her hair.
"Uh, actually, she's giving us a guide."
Stiles's face transformed into confusion, but it went away as soon as a big motorbike stopped in front of us. "You know her?" Stiles asked my brother.
As soon as the person took their helmet off, we saw a beautiful black woman whose neck seemed to be scarred. "Braeden."
"Who's Braeden?"
"She's a mercenary," Lydia added.
"Right now, I'm the only one who's gonna take you to la iglesia."
"The Church?" I questioned. "What's The Church?"
"It's not a place you'll find God," I smirked, liking her way of talking.
Getting inside the jeep, we followed her as she took us to la iglesia.
There was a comfortable silence inside Roscoe. The three girls were sitting behind as I sat on the front between my boyfriend and my brother. "Okay, I'll ask." Malia was the one interrupting the silence. "Who's Kate Argent?"
Kira put her hand up. "Uh, I'd like to know, too."
"Well, we were at her funeral. So, I'd like to know how she got out of a casket that was buried six feet underground." I chuckled, nodding my head that was resting on Stiles's shoulder as he drove.
"She was never in it." I glanced at my brother.
"She was Allison's aunt," Lydia spoke, and I could feel the pain in her voice. The pain of someone who recently lost her best friend. WAnd a total sociopath."
"You don't have to talk about it now if you don't want to." Kira whispered while glancing at the back of my brother's head.
"Um, yes, he does." I was going to scold Malia as if she was a curious child that didn't know when to keep her mouth shut.
"Yeah, she's right. You guys should know. You need to know."
"All right." Stiles sighed. "Kate was the one who set the fire that killed most of Derek's family."
"Some of them survived, like Cora, and Peter." Scott added.
"A very angry Peter," Lydia appended.
"Yeah, he's the one who bit and turned me." My brother sighed.
"And the one who scratched me." I added.
"And the one who finally caught up to Kate and killed her." Lydia explained.
"And we saw her buried." Stiles and I replied at the same time. He took his eyes off the road for two seconds to place a kiss on my forehead and ask once again, if I was feeling alright.
"No." Scott shook his head. "We saw a casket, remember? She wasn't in it. The Calaveras heard that Kate had been killed by an Alpha's claws. They wanted to make sure she was really dead. Her body was healing. More and more, as she got closer to a full moon. She was coming back. So they switched out the bodies. If a hunter is bit, they have to take their own life before they change. The Calaveras, they treat the code like law. They make it their responsibility to enforce it."
"Good for her." The were coyote intervened. "I wouldn't do it either."
"Would you kill half a dozen people to get out? Because that's what she did."
Kira sighed, placing her hand on my brother's shoulder. "So Kate's a werewolf now?"
"I don't know. You know, there's a saying, sometimes the shape you take reflects the person you are." I nodded along with my brother's words, remembering Jackson Whittemore. What was of him now?
"What kind of shape is sociopathic bitch?" As soon as the Martin girl spoke, the car was hit by something, making Stiles stop driving as we all got startled. We all got out of the car as Braeden got off her bike to ask what had happened.
"I don't know. It felt like we hit something." Stiles and Scott were examining Roscoe.
"Scott, we need to get there by night. It's too dangerous otherwise."
My brother sighed. "Go." Stiles made a gesture with his hands, trying to let him know that it was okay for him to leave with Braeden.
"Not without you."
"Dude, someone needs to find Derek. We'll figure something out. We always do. Just go."
I walked to my brother, kissing his cheek and embracing him. "Be careful, okay?" He nodded his head, wishing the same for me and sharing a look with Stiles. A look pleading him to take care of me.
Before he walked to the bike, he was stopped by the fox girl. "Scott... I can't think of anything else to say except for be careful. And...and I know 'Be careful' sounds kind of lame and I'm totally sure the second you're gone I'm gonna think of something much better, but I..."
"Uh, 'Be careful' works for me." I smiled as they embraced each other.
I sighed. "They are so cute," I whispered while wandering close to Stiles as his hands rubbed Roscoe's side, making sure that there wasn't any scratch.
"We are cuter." He replied while biting his lower lip and inspecting his jeep. I laughed and nodded my head and watching my brother disappear with Braeden.
"Guys," Malia grunted. Therefore, I turned around to look at her. "I don't think we hit something. I think something hit us." She was holding up what seemed like giant teeth or claw. I couldn't differentiate them, to be honest.
I sighed, leaning against the jeep as I examined my boyfriend inspecting the hood of his car. A screwdriver in his mouth. "Stiles, baby. Don't hate me. I know you love Roscoe but maybe we should just walk." He glanced at me with wide eyes. "It's getting colder and darker." I made a gesture to the girls as they rubbed their arms.
"Hey, I will never abandon this jeep. You understand me? Ever. Ever. Ever."
Malia glanced around. "Work faster, Stiles." She paused as her eyes continued examining the whereabouts. "There's something out here with us." I gulped.
However, night had fallen upon us and Roscoe wasn't working. Malia continued in front of us, glancing around, prepared to attack whatever was observing us. Kira had grabbed her sword while Lydia and I tried to help my stressed boyfriend. "Lydia, could you please hold the light still for a second? It's really hard to see anything if you keep shaking it like that."
Lydia scoffed. "I'm shaking it like this because we're in the middle of nowhere with your broken down jeep and we're being attacked by yet another razor-clawed monster. And I'm terrified."
"Well, just be slightly less terrified." He answered back. "You hold this." He handed me a big metal piece.
"What's this?" I inspected it.
"I don't know. I'm hoping it's not important."
"Oh god." I sighed. Things got worse as the next thing that happened was Malia running towards somewhere or something. "Malia!" I yelled. Kira ran after her while Lydia told Stiles to continue fixing the jeep.
"You... you please don't do that ever again!" Stiles scolded Malia as he drove. The jeep was finally fixed or so we were hoping.
"Do what?" She innocently asked.
"I... I thought you just took off. I thought you were running."
"I was running."
"No, I mean, like, I thought you were leaving."
Malia pouted, looking between Stiles and me. "I wouldn't leave without you guys." We glanced at her. "I would never leave without you two. Them I would leave."
"Yeah. Uh, it's progress." Stiles sighed. "I feel like the dad of a teenager girl." I nodded my head. Stiles and I had taken the paper of teaching Malia what she shouldn't do. The actions she must separate between a human and a were coyote.
"Don't do it again, okay?" I begged. "You scared us." She apologized. "And that doesn't look good."
"It's okay."
"Are you sure?" Kira looked worried as the rest of us. "It looks deep."
"I can feel it healing." I sighed in relief.
"You didn't see anything?" The Martin girl asked.
"Barely. It had a strong scent, though."
"Like what?" I asked while offering her water from my bottle.
She smiled at me as if she was a little puppy, grabbing the plastic bottle. "Like death."
When we finally arrived at the place where Scott and Braeden where we noticed that they were grabbing a young boy. Malia asked if that was Derek, to which Stiles replied 'Sort of'. That young boy was Derek Hale.
Derek Hale was a teenager once again.

thanks @viterbofangirl for tagging me!
Rules: Tag nine people you want to know better.
Three ships: i have loads as always, but Kenny Omega/Kota Ibushi still own my entire heart. i’m also currently into Ink/Pa from Bad Buddy, and for the third... i have too many wrestling ships... uh, i guess i’ll say Emma/Harriet (from Emma), just for something a little different? i’ve been thinking about their relationship a lot as i’ve been reading.
First ever ship: probably Ichigo/Kisshu from Tokyo Mew Mew, haha. it’s the first ship i actually sought out fic for, at least.
Last song: i never know how to answer this question, but the last song i added to my wrestling themes playlist is 東京事変 [ 秘密 ] , which Minoru Fujita uses as his theme, and which i managed to find after i figured out how to google a wrestler’s theme in Japanese.
Last film: oh dear, i am legitimately struggling to remember... 💧 OH, i think it was Maurice (1987)? i watched it sort of out of the blue a couple months ago and really enjoyed it.
Currently reading: oh boy. this is gonna be a long section. the vast majority of the reading i’ve been doing is not in English lol, but i did start reading Gathering Moss by Robin Wall Kimmerer (i won a signed copy of it at work!), and of course, i am still reading Emma in real time, very slowly (though there has been a lot of stuff happening in the past couple weeks because Frank Churchill finally arrived).
in Spanish, i started reading @luvamiart‘s book Tempestad! it’s definitely above my level of Spanish ability, so i have to look up dozens of words in the dictionary (i’m trying out a Spanish-Spanish dictionary instead of an English-Spanish one) every page, but i’m enjoying the book so far, and i’m learning a lot! i’m trying not to be too intimidated by the length, because it is quite long for someone who takes as much time as i do to get through a single page 😅.
in Japanese, i am soooo close to finishing my first textbook, omg. i’m on lesson 25 of みんなの日本語, and i am THIS close to being done!! immediately after i finish it, i’m going to be moving on to book 2, so my work is far from over, haha, but i’m really proud of myself for making it this far.
my more fun Japanese book is volume 3 of 大海原と大海原! i managed to get through volumes 1 and 2 over the past several months, and then i wanted to continue with volume 3 so that i could see the rest of the story, but it turned out to be much, much harder than the first two books, because it’s aimed at an older audience and has no furigana akfghdkgjfhdg. my kanji knowledge has gotten good enough that i’m actually managing to read it just fine, surprisingly, though my comprehension is far from perfect. i’m considering trying to play the RPG after i finish it, though i’d be better off waiting until my grammar is better.
the other Japanese thing i’ve been reading is the DDT/TJPW show recaps on the DDT website, after Mr. Haku left CyberFight and we lost our translation. DDT just recently acquired English translation again, so i’ve gotten a reprieve from having to attempt to translate myself lol, but TJPW is still without translation, so i’ve taken over for a friend and switched my focus to that. i’ve been trying to translate as much of the backstage comments and such as i have text transcriptions for (since audio is still very beyond me). it’s very slow-going but also rewarding (i’m harvesting so many words from them to add to anki haha), and it’s fun to experience the character voices like this. a friend whose Japanese is much more advanced than mine has been helping mentor me and correct/explain stuff when i have translation questions, and i’m so grateful for all of their help and support!
Currently watching: do i even need to say it. same as the past couple years, basically. way too much wrestling lol. i’ve scaled down a tiny bit from last year, but not really much. i’m currently watching AEW, TJPW, DDT, NJPW, and some NOAH, ChocoPro, and AAA.
i think i watched a grand total of three Normal TV Shows last year afjdgdfg. the last non-wrestling thing that i’ve watched was Bad Buddy, a Thai BL show that was pretty good for what it was.
Currently consuming: as of the time of writing (the night before actually publishing this post at a normal hour), soy miso chicken and udon noodles, with green tea.
Currently craving: i never know how to answer this question, haha! i guess i could go for a sandwich about now? i blame Miu Watanabe for posting about sandwiches on instagram.
Tagging: @mizufae @paramaline @theundergrounddog @meganthewarriorprincess @feralbags @norationalthoughtrequired @holodeckprotocols @nocturnical and for the ninth person, if your name is not listed here but you want to fill this out, consider yourself tagged

𝔑𝔬𝔱𝔥𝔦𝔫𝔤.
Today I woke up thinking a lot about the t-shirt designed by Kaoru (2020) and how awesome it is, plus how much I like it (even though it’s white lol). I’d had the religious text used in the design ―I don’t know exactly what it’s called― for quite some time now, but I never stopped to look at it closely, so propelled by my mind I wanted to make a post. Honestly I use Tumblr to store stuff, I don’t expect to be read or to get reblogs/likes because it’s not something I’m interested in but I want to make it clear that if anyone reads this... I try to compile facts and provide sources in case someone with better knowledge can clear up any misunderstandings I write.
• Design.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Info provided by GBS (Galaxy Broad Shop).
As part of the Artist Support Project launched by GALAXY BROAD SHOP, DIR EN GREY has just announced new T-Shirt 100% produced by the band members!
The theme of the design produced by 薫 (Guitar) is “Time”. The setlist of a live show held back in 1997, handwritten by 薫, is printed on the front of the T-shirt. The white color makes it perfect for this hot season.
If you look closely you can easily read some words/sentences in both French and Latin despite the overlapping image of the band on stage.
Tumblr media
Image source (info abt this below).
The text printed on the t-shirt design comes from "Office de la Semaine Sainte Latin et François, selon le missel et breviaire romain; avec l'explication des cérémonies de l'eglise, 1723 (Office of the Holy Week Latin and French, according to the missal and Roman breviary; with the explanation of the ceremonies of the church, 1723)" thanks to the translator. By the way, I don't plan to translate anything that comes from Latin/French because I don't speak those languages, but if you're interested in knowing what it says, a copy/paste into Google translator might work (that's what I did).
With that in mind, the first words/sentences that can be read in the design are the last ones in a segment called "A Matines":
Source (1825, Pag. 257).
Ant. Confundantur et revereantur quiærunt animam meam, ut auferant eam.
Ant. Que ceux qui cherchoient à m'ôter la vie, soient couverts de confusion et de honte.
Then a short excerpt from Psalm 39.
The "introduction" of this Psalm (and the structure of the text seen in the design) comes from this document (1723, pag. 313) although at other times the sentences/words are written as in the document referenced above (1825).

Expectans expectavi Dominum: & intendit mihi.
If you checked the documents out of curiosity you will have noticed that they are basically scans, copy/paste did not work at all in this case to extract the text so I did it manually so, maybe, there is some typing error because some letters were ambiguous to identify, for example some F and S.
Continuing with the design, Kaoru added the setlist for June 14, 1997 at Rock May Kan ( 目黒鹿鳴館  ). He even asked on DIR MOBILE and Aknot for the setlist of that date. Here a tweet.

To keep it simple because I can't remember the exact moment (or moments) in which he spoke about this venue I have to mention that despite being a small place it has been important because of the amount of bands that have performed there. Even on January 22, 2021, according to setlist.fm, DIR EN GREY recorded there 爆音上映会『目黒鹿鳴館GIG』.
Due to the COVID crisis, last year many venues suffered financially (like many other businesses). Rock May Kan had a campaign to raise funds with the sale of merchandise and the collaboration of other artists. If you are interested you can check their twitter for more information, it is in Japanese and for the same reason I don't dare to give more information about it since I don't know the language. I must also say that I don't know the use given to the funds raised with the t-shirts designed by DIR EN GREY and I am adding this additional information about Rock May Kan because of the relation of the design made by Kaoru and the events associated to the venue last year.
Last but not least, verifying information from DIR EN GREY's official website and DIR EN GREY's WIKI (a reliable and practical source) plus adding a little guesswork....
June 14, 1997 was DIR EN GREY's first one man show (ワンマンライブ) at Rock May Kan. The day before, on June 13, 1997, a secret show titled Neo Behind The Mask took place there. However, if there is any mistake in this please tell me.
And Rock May Kan received two Kaoru t-shirt💜.

That's all. I hope this information will change your life (?) lmao.

apps i’ve heard that are good for various aspects of language study:
Japanese:
WaniKani for vocabulary and kanji - the creators of it seem to think their app, plus a good grammar guide (so grammar textbook working through exercises) should be enough to learn and move into immersion. So I imagine at least their kanji/vocab coverage is large. People seem to like this app - I like that it supposedly has mnemonics. I imagine its kanji/vocab coverage goes up to N1, a benefit as stuff like Lingodeer only covers the basics.
Bunpro - Japanese Grammar SRS. What I like about the ‘concept’ of this, is that if fully used it would be a lot like doing textbook exercises/review of grammar which may help grammar correction/production more (versus what I do generally which is just passively read grammar which helps with comprehension but not production). I also specficially like that it GOES UP TO N1 GRAMMAR. Which pretty much all other apps for japanese don’t go past N4-3 at the absolute best.
KanjiKoohi - not an app but a site, free, super nice to just reference for kanji meanings and mnemonics.
Anki/Memrise - self explanatory, good for flashcard study of kanji/sentences/words. I personally really like Japanese Core 2k deck etc, and personally have only ever stuck with Nukemarine’s LLJ Memrise Courses. (*To be fair, the Nukemarine courses include Tae Kim’s Grammar Guide, Kanji study, and vocab study like Core 2k, so its a pretty comprehensive all-in-one if you can’t be motivated to study multiple materials).
Chinese:
Skritter - like Wanikani, its for learning hanzi characters, seems to cover most characters, and is well liked by people. However I used it and remember finding it not beneficial and quitting so I’ve got mixed feelings. I can’t remember if I only quit because the app wasn’t worth the subscription cost to me, or because it taught too slow/without enough mnemonics etc. (One big benefit I find to Anki, Memrise, Clozemaster specifically is you have a LOT of control over how much you study per day - you can grind through 100-200 things in less than an hour or just 15 words and skip some days then return, but stuff like Skritter really has a ‘plan’ they keep you more rigidly on if I remember correct which doesn’t work well for people like me who cannot study X amount of time the same way each day consistently).
HackChinese - I saw this mentioned recently for hanzi AND vocab. What I like, it includes vocab up to HSK 6. It also seems easy to add new vocab and vocab lists from textbooks. However I don’t think it covers more than that, so perhaps an alternative to Skritter and Memrise etc.
Anki/Memrise - again self explanatory. Specifically there’s some really good chinese specific decks out there (like Hanzi with Mnemonics chinese anki decks, Chinese Spoonfed anki deck - and just audio files someone made which I use a lot). Timo’s All in One Chinese 3 part anki deck is also useful. How good/bad what you study really depends on the materials you find.
Chinese Pronunciation Trainer - a simple, free app. I fully recommend it as its built perfectly for Shadowing. It shows text (with or without pinyin) you hear the audio, you record yourself shadowing by just pressing a button, then you hear a replay of your voice compared to the audio. Shadowing works best when you can get feedback comparing your voice to the example you’re shadowing, so this is a great tool for that. Its also like 1000-2000 sentences, so even a beginner can find it useful as they’re generally daily life sentences that aren’t too complex.
普通话学习 app - I use the free version (I don’t think it will let me pay where I live, but it did let me register). This app is all in chinese so there’s a little learning curve but I figured it out back with a vocabulary < HSK 4 so its pretty doable. The free activities include a LOT of shadowing drills like individual syllables, sentences, and paragraphs. The app has native audio and hanzi/pinyin as a transcript, then you record your voice and it will compare how you did and grade you. It will tell you if you were comprehensible and how much, tell you what places you made errors, and let you compare your voice recording with the example audio. It also has tests, and doing those is nice as it will show you specifically if you mess up tones, initials, or finals and which specific instances you mess up. So for example it helped me realize I really mess up eng final a lot, the c initial, tone pairs of 3-4, etc - which helped me pinpoint WHERE to listen for my errors and try to figure out the correct pronunciation compared to them. I think it really helped me a lot in that beginner-ish stage where I could not tell very well what sounded right or wrong, since it can get so specific with what my struggle areas are. It also helped me figure out once I was doing tones correct (assuming its just shadowing and not free convo where I’m coming up with words on the spot), because it would show I got to a point where if I saw pinyin for 1-4 tones, I’d be replicating them correctly (most of my mistakes now are b, c, q initials and  eng, en finals).
Pleco - I don’t know how I almost forgot! Specifically I use Pleco Reader tool every single day. Pleco also has flashcards, and community made flashcard decks, so it could replace Anki/Memrise easily as your SRS system with sentence mining etc. And its got a huge dictionary, graded readers, etc. I usually use Pleco or Baidu Translate or Google translate for random word lookup. Pleco is best for individual words, google translate is best for ease (loads fast and recognizes real messy handwritten input), BaiduTranslate is best for sentences. I use Pleco daily to read, in their Reader area I can open up any website, click a button so its all just text, and read the text with a pop up dictionary or audio for a word/idiom or the entire selection, and save any word/sentence/phrase into my pleco flashcards with all the dictionary info and audio.  It’s a better reader tool with a built in dictionary than LingQ by far. The reader features are free under “Clipboard Reader” so just copy paste text in there to use these features. I bought the one time cost $24 Reader Tool (and a graded reader and an expanded dictionary, the extras didn’t cost much), so I can open any website in the Reader or pdf/txt file etc. It also came with an OCR reader so I can just point it at real books I’m reading, and a handwriting lookup feature so I can lookup words in pleco by handwriting too (but I usually use Google translate as it tolerates my sloppiness better). Because I can save words in Pleco Reader, I can immediately see if words I’m looking up are ones I’ve seen before (and should try to recall) or brand new words/hanzi. Which helps me prioritize study. I can also Bookmark sites/pages/books in the Reader, so its just really convienient.

How about Josuke, Okuyasu, & Rohan with a male s/o who lives in American and decided to pay them a surprise visit. (Love your writing btw!)
Well uh how convient. I been watching 90 day fiancé lately. Anyway thank you!!
Josuke, Okuyasu, and Rohan with an American male! s/o who visits Japan.
Josuke
This was surreal. When you first met Josuke, it was online.
Basically when you two first met, it was an argument over simple video games on a forum. However, it was pretty hard because you had to translate half the website.
Little did you know that it somehow became more once you got to get to know him. You didn’t know that you would feel this connection with a boy so far away before.
Over the course of 6 months and pinching pockets, you finally came to the decision of traveling to Morioh.
As you were boarding the plane all you could think to yourself was. Does he remember that I’m a boy as well? Does he actually love me? What will he say when I arrive?
All your questions were answered when you arrive at the station from the city. You wandered onto a bench and sent him a message.
You gained an instant reply and he was shocked that you came! He told you that he couldn’t wait to see your husk smile and hug you.
30 minutes passed and you heard a call. “Over here, Y/N!” This was the first time you heard Josuke’s voice and it was so smooth you felt yourself blushing.
You ran towards him and you both hugged each other. The two of you were basically in paradise.
“Now what should we do first?” Josuke grinned.
Okuyasu
You met Okuyasu through a pen-pal program through your school. You two felt as if you were peas in a pod.
Almost everyday you’ve gotten a letter from him. Even though it’s been a good year since that project ended.
His birthday was coming up and you felt like you should give him the nest gift you can considering that you are his partner and all.
Then the idea popped in your head! You were going to Japan.
Luckily for you, you already have his address and you can show up to his doorstep like mail!
On the day of his birthday, you knocked on the door of his place with flowers in your hands and some Hershey’s chocolate for him.
At first, he thought you were a statue or something until he realized it was you.
“Woah. This is so realistic and those chocolates look good.” He mumbled to himself in Japanese as he was observing you.
He never felt so happy in life and he fell even more in love with you.
Rohan
You were an aspiring artist. You loved to see different art from many parts of the world just to gain inspiration. You met Rohan through a colleague of yours.
Your relationship was pretty rocky at times considering that there was always an argument about not seeing each other at all or not communicating.
However, you made an impulsive decision. You wanted to move to Japan.
This took quite some time because you had to refresh yourself on Japanese culture. You didn’t have a problem with this because you knew how everything will play out.
As much as you wanted to tell your partner that you’re going to move in, you decided to pay a visit.
Finding Rohan’s place was fairly easy because it was pretty obvious that you could ask someone where he lives and they would tell you.
Once you got over there, all your emotions played a game. Will he be happy if you knocked on his door?
After weighing the pros and cons you bit the bullet and knocked. It was a faint echo through the house.
Threw was loud crashing and banging then Rohan opened the door to see the love of his life. He got so excited that he practically dragged you inside.

Hey everyone! We are a month away from Yashahime! October 3rd is coming up quick for the airing of Yashahime.
youtube
The deadline for the Rumiko Takahashi Q/A passed and we will be seeing which of our questions will be featured and answered on a Shonen Sunday magazine so I'm looking forward to see what Rumiko Takahashi has to say to us about InuYasha and Yashahime.
In a recent Yashahime Preview trailer we get to see a tiny bit of new footage. Attacking Roothead with Tessaiga and another of Towa's funny facial expressions. But most noteably it mentions that they have to get a Rainbow pearl to recover Setsuna's memories. My theory was right when I talked about the second visit to the Inu no Taishou's grave that the black pearl would give InuYasha flashbacks. In my full trailer analysis I mentioned that Setsuna's eye glowing reminded me of the Black Pearl, which I think a lot of us took that into thought but I also dugged deeper and remembered that the Black Pearl was seen giving InuYasha memory flashbacks. It also got me thinking a few times when I saw the different colored pearls on the website, the black one being at the very bottom. So the trailer definitely confirmed my theory that they would need a pearl to give Setsuna her memories back.
I do remember an early translation that talked about Moroha having a Shell that had a red pearl. That really caught my attention before we even got the trailer about Setsuna's eye. This is what the early art translation said about Moroha "When she puts on her lipstick that is carried in a shell with a red pearl" In the official English translation of the profiles color reveal showed in the Kaoru Wada livestream it says when she puts on Rouge she becomes Beniyasha. We haven't seen her put on red lipstick yet or rouge as in red blush makeup. What if the bow on her head was from Kagome's old school uniform? We will see! Now I don't know if the red pearl on Moroha's shell is just decorative or something also special, as if it's holding someone else's memories. Like, you guessed it - Possibly Moroha's memories, InuYasha or Kagome's. Again, pearls are also portals and could be holding many other secrets. Someone could be trapped there as well. Admittedly the first mention of Moroha's red pearl got my brain ticking about it very early on. Moroha's red pearl could even be one part of the many pearls that, when combined all together could make the entire Rainbow pearl in order for Setsuna to regain her memories. In order for them to get Setsuna's memories back - There is a chance that the Rainbow pearl could only be acquired when you find all of the different colored pearls.
Tumblr media
When we look at the website there is 8 colored pearls. If you remember the colors of the rainbow has 7. Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, and Violet. These pearls seem to match quite closely with the total of 8 pearls when we include the black one.
It would have been cute if it was Izayoi's lipstick shell that was magically recovered after being crushed. Looking forward to how this all plays out.
Now, I constantly get asked this - "Are InuYasha and Kagome dead?" or "Why did they abandon their child? Couldn't InuYasha sniff her out?" I have answered these many times. My answers to these are - No, they are NOT dead. They were seperated and possibly sent to another dimension or sealed away. Their memories could have been taken too. InuYasha and Kagome did not abandon their child. Again, they were seperated. InuYasha also could have lost his sense to smell her out because of the fire and smoke. Even adding to the possibility of it being Root Head infested Sacred Tree smoke. Another idea, is that InuYasha could have lost that ability had it happened on the New Moon.
It was announced on the Ani-One channel that you will be able to watch Yashahime for free, if it will have English subs is something I'm wondering about as well. If not I will be looking at whoever anime provider has it first. They will definitely be getting my money. Make sure to subscribe to them, and keep checking AnimeLab, VIZ Media and probably Crunchy Roll. Considering we just had a CrunchyRoll x VIZ Media live stream for Yashahime September 4th.
On September 4th we had a livestream for Yashahime. Nothing too new in it, the guy that was talking spoke of Rumiko Takahashi's history in creating more than one hit series. As well as how successful and popular her work is. The nice thing to note that when VIZ Media did announce it they did show the four images of InuYasha and Kagome, Sesshoumaru and Rin that enough hinted to me that they were going to be showing us a bit of the livestreams from a month or so back but with some subtitles. So we did get some official subtitles for little parts of it. I liked that Kappei mentioned he changes it a little bit as human InuYasha when he talks. When InuYasha transforms back he says he imagines his demon blood inside of him erupts so he drops the voice a little lower right when that transformation happens to become half demon again. They also mentioned Rin's voice actor would make her own songs and sing about things like Jaken being green. She also confirmed this when her and Ken Narita were talking in their portion. I thought that was very cute. They did say Jaken was like Rin's father figure a couple times . Then Rin's voice actor mentioned she saw a thread online that said "Jaken is the mom" of Towa and Setsuna. They were cracking up. Her and Ken Narita wanted to make a parody about how Setsuna stole a piece of the fluffy from Sesshoumaru for her Naginata. As if Sesshoumaru was dead asleep when it happened, then there was just some random patch of fur missing. I thought that was hilarious.
It has been announced that Uru's song "Break" will be the ending song for Yashahime. We will get to hear the TV version of this October 3rd when Yashahime airs. Uru will be releasing the Full Ending song for Yashahime October 28th.
Like I thought after they finished the InuYasha no Tsubo posts, that they would be posting Yashahime ones. Here is the new post, confirming this. It says that they have reached the final round for InuYasha no Tsubo, if you don't know what InuYasha no Tsubo is it was character info at the end of each episode that the Japanese voice over versions. From September 8th they will be posting Yashahime. I will also be posting translations for these!
I want to thank each and every one of you. Whether you are a member of our Group, a subscriber or a follower. You are still giving us support and that means a whole lot to us. Yashahime is a month away from us.

[UPDATE] Tashiro-kun, Kimi tte Yatsu Wa Drama CD Cast Interview + Pictures!
Tumblr media
We’re back with a fun new update; the cast interviews for the Tashiro-kun drama CD have been released by the BLCD CEL Twitter and the B-Boy P Tashiro-kun website! They said it’s to commemorate Ebihara’s birthday, which is 11/26 (today), so happy birthday to everyone’s favourite cute stubborn shrimp boy! o(≧▽≦)o 🦐🎂🧡 Keep reading for photos and the full interview! (machine-translated with me tweaking it as best as I could 🙌 )
First photo (from the left): Toshiki Masuda (Tashiro) and Yoshitsugu Matsuoka (Ebihara) | Second photo: Tomokazu Sugita (Bannai) and Yusuke Shirai (Sega) | Third Photo: Chiharu Sawashiro (Shikaku) and Koutarou Nishiyama (Maru)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Interview:
—Please tell us your impressions of the Tashiro-kun drama CD!
Yoshitsugu Matsuoka (Ebihara): The original manga was very interesting, and I was wondering how the CD would turn out, but the recording was also so much fun (laughs). For a moment, I felt like my younger self again. I felt like I fully brought out my real personality.
Toshiki Masuda (Tashiro): By the time I realized I had gotten attached to Ebihara-kun, played by Matsuoka-san, the recording was already over! There are some exciting scenes, but the mood of the funny playful scenes that start suddenly are comfortable. Maru and Shikaku are a must-see in both the manga and the drama CD! Also, Matsuoka-san and I were discussing the mystery of Bannai’s hairstyle. When I looked at the cover of the original comic and saw what was inside later...I was shocked! Overall, it was a memorable and fun recording that went by quite fast.
Yusuke Shirai (Sega): It’s very fun, with a lot of gag taste. I’m playing someone in a university setting, but I never went to university myself, so I was doing the recording while thinking, “this looks fun.” It was a bit regrettable that although the recording was with 4 people (me, Sugita-san, Nishiyama-san & Sawashiro-san,) due to COVID-19 and the studio’s safety precautions, I did my recording in a separate booth from everyone else. I could hear their voices but it was lonely since I couldn’t see them. It can’t be helped...(laughs). However, it was a lot of fun because the four of us could still talk to each other during this time.
Tomokazu Sugita (Bannai): It was a wonderful recording that made the best use of each of the actors’ strengths. Regarding the content, there were some character-specific biases, such as Comiket, the manga research club, and doujinshi. It was a task to bring my real intentions and feelings to the character of Bannai.
Kourarou Nishiyama (Maru): It was really fun. When I first saw the character Maru, I kept wondering what kind of voice I should make. He looked really cute, so I thought it would be nice if I did it with a slightly deformed atmosphere.
Chiharu Sawashiro (Shikaku): I enjoyed playing the character Shikaku. I don’t usually play these types of characters, so it was a good experience. I had a lot of fun!
—Please give us your impressions of the character you played.
Matsuoka: No, I understand, I understand!* (I believe here he means he understands Ebihara’s stance) but Tashiro-kun isn’t a bad guy, so why not be a little more careful with him? It feels a little childish like that. Again, I understand his feelings, but no need to get so mindlessly angry! He felt like a passionate person who was always worried. I thought it was cute for me as an actor.
Masuda: He has a slight communication disorder, but it’s fine because he can still speak to people politely. I’m not good at speaking myself, so I can understand how nervous he is. He also can’t help but get nervous in front of his favourite person. Even so, how is he such a rich guy?
Shirai: Sega is so handsome that everyone calls him “Handsome-kun,” but he’s found to have a pretty bad mouth, yet he’s a charming and funny character with a wide range of mood swings. When I read the manga, there was a part where Sega said a tsundere-like line to Bannai, and I thought, “Oh, yeah, Sega likes Bannai...”. Oh, it was just for a moment, but I found out later that wasn’t the case at all, and that he was instead attracted to Ebihara-kun...(laughs).
(*This next part was translated really weirdly, so I tried to make out the general idea as best as I could.)
Sugita: Bannai’s a leader, and so I was asked to give a play of leadership, but I was consciously putting together the performance so that it wouldn’t be heard as an advisor or teacher. On the contrary, I adjusted it while thinking that playing with calmness seems to be getting old (in an bad way.) It’s boring to think that’s something’s interesting just because it’s a gag, so I played Bannai with that in mind.
Nishiyama: As you can imagine from the name Maru* (means circle/round in Japanese) his appearance matches his name. He has a healing atmosphere, kinda like a mascot, and in a good way, I felt like he was a character I could stay at my own pace with. There was a scene where I had to sing an idol song, but when I consulted Chiharu-kun, I was able to sing it very happily. Thanks to this scene, I think that our good teamwork showed, including Maru, Shikaku and Bannai who made it exciting (laughs).
Sawashiro: Since he’s an introverted yet hardcore character, Shikaku’s heart is quite rosy, but I was conscious of not exposing it too much. In the song scene that Nishiyama mentioned earlier, I thought it would be great if I could jump over a little and make it an interesting scene, so I hope you’ll pay attention to it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
—Great! Give us your recommended points for listening in the CD.
Matsuoka: I would like you to thoroughly hear all the exchanges with Tashiro-kun! I think you’ll laugh a lot. If you listen to it with the manga in mind, I think you’ll get a synergistic effect (laughs).
Masuda: Somehow I love it, but I’m a little nervous. There are many nerve-wracking scenes, but it’s a work with a lot of playful points, so please pay attention to that as well! It’s very interesting to hear the important points and the atmosphere!
Shirai: I think the axis of this work is the exchange between and Ebihara and Tashiro, or more specifically the change in Ebihara’s emotions, who initially aggressively refused Tashiro-kun, then comes to accept him. Amongst them, Sega’s meddling is one of the factors that affects the relationship between those two, so I hope you enjoy that part as well. When I first saw the cast list, I thought, “Wow, all the roles are so fitting!” Sugita-san fit Bannai very nicely, Kotarou has a round voice like Maru, and Chiharu has a square voice like Shikaku, so I really thought everyone would fit nicely (laugh). It’s a work where you can enjoy every other character alongside the main two, so I hope you’ll enjoy it as a whole.
Sugita: Asking the for voice actor’s favourite listening spot would kinda feel like negligent promotion. I think it’s more appropriate to have the original creator give their opinion on which lines you’d want to hear most. If the voice actor decides, there are people who will take it to heart and pay attention to only that, and as a result there’s a bias. When you say “this part,” everyone will think “only this part,” since it creates this persuasive power. On the contrary, if the listeners themselves send their own impressions with opinions like “this is the best part to listen to” to the creator, it’ll go through more clearly, so please send them.
Nishiyama: I think that the harmonious and fun atmosphere of this work will be very healing in this tense situation, so I hope everyone will enjoy the mood.
Sawashiro: Even if you see the the mellow atmosphere of the Manken,* (Manga research club) it will be soothing, so I hope you enjoy the loose feeling.
—“I’m a [blank] otaku!” Please tell us what kind of otaku you are and why!
Matsuoka: I’m a car otaku. Mainly for car contents. I’ve been collecting a lot of car magazines since I was a junior high student, so I’m kinda obsessed when it comes to cars. But I don’t have a driver’s license.
Masuda: Body otaku. I want to have fun and lose weight, so I tend to gather information to enjoy everyday. Before I noticed, I began to gain trivia-like knowledge about the body, so I think I’m more familiar with it.
Shirai: I wonder if I’m a green otaku. I really like the color green. Especially for clothes. I search up the color green on the net. If I find my favourite green coloured place in the city, I’ll be fascinated by it. I feel like this obsession is getting stronger year after year, and I’m afraid that the whole house will turn green at this rate. However, I think it’s better to be particular about what you like, so I’d like to continue to be a green otaku.
Sugita: I don’t really like the word “otaku.” I try not to label myself based on what I like or love. It’s different when it comes to “look at yourself playing a game,” and “look at yourself when you’re talking about your favourite idol.” When there’s differences, the essence of what you want will change, so I don’t like using these words too much.
Nishiyama: Soybeans are what I always consume in my daily life. I really like beans, so I eat natto, tofu, soy milk, and isoflavones. That’s why I choose soy milk over milk (laughs). I feel like I’m made of bean ingredients...I’ve just noticed that that’s another connection to Maru* (laughs). (I think he means because beans are round, like Maru.)
Sawashiro: I’m not an otaku, but I like natto and kimchi. Ever since I was a student, I’ve been eating natto and kimchi with everything my mother makes at home. Then, my mother told me “you don’t care about my seasoning...” with a sad face (laughs).
—Please give a message to your fans.
Matsuoka: The cast members also gathered with unique people (laughs). I hope you can enjoy this romantic comedy to your heart’s content by laughing and laughing again when feeling sad! Thank you!
Masuda: I expressed the humor I felt reading the original with my voice as much as possible. I hope you can enjoy the occasional thrilling development of people who are so unique with the drama CD!
Shirai: I don’t want to force you guys. Rather than aiming for perfection, I was conscious of finishing it first. If the doujinshi drawn by Bannai wasn’t something he wants to draw from the bottom of his heart, he wouldn’t be so happy. As the years go by, these memories become more and more interesting when I look back. I feel something close to the CD and I want to cherish it. If you listen to this CD after 10 or 20 years, it should be absolutely interesting, so about 30 years later, it’ll be like “Tashiro-kun, Kimi Tte Yatsu Wa UPRISING,” so let’s meet then.
Nishiyama: I had a lot of fun doing it. It’s really easy for BL beginners to get into, and I think it’s a very healing work. To be honest, I’m full of feelings for this series, where I really wanna do the continuation, see it and listen to it. I hope everyone enjoys it a lot and tells us what they think. Thank you.
Sawashiro: It’s the story of a college student, and I’m really young. I think you can really understand that we are absorbed in what we want to do and that all the characters have something glittering inside. I hope you can feel youthful while listening to this. Thank you.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
—Thank you to the whole cast! The drama CD “Tashiro-kun, Kimi Tte Yatsu Wa.” will be released on January 20th, 2021! The second volume of the manga will also be released on the same day. Please look forward to it ♪
I hope you guys enjoyed this interview! Again, I tried translating it the best I could with the help of Google, so I hope you guys were able to get the gist of it. -0-0-0--- Olive ---0-0-0-
Black eyes, rimmed with a thin blue line. Glowing in a way that was almost predatory like. It reminded her of a shark moving toward her. She felt like she was in water, or using her querk. Slowly trying to escape from something that was much faster in a black abyss.
Nothing but those glowing blue eyes were visible.
Olive’s lungs filled with hot dry air making her cough. The taste of ash and smoke filling her lungs as she tried to pull her consciousness awake. Blinking she saw a car on fire in front of her along with small fires spread across the parking lot of a large mall. One she did not recognize.
Taking a step back she looked around trying to get her bearings. Her eyes slowly adjusting to the world around her. It felt like a dream as if someone had just thrown her into this situation. No memories of how she got here or what was going on.
Maybe she was dreaming?
Touching her face she blinked a few times as she saw people screaming and running from the building. They were saying things but she couldn’t quite make out what. As if they were just making noises.
What was going on? What happened? Where was she? Panic slowly rising in her chest with the thought that she had no idea what to do or where to go. Her breaths become shallow as panic began to wash over her.
“Olive! Olive!” the sound of her name being called broke her out of her stupor as a tall red-haired man ran up to her grabbing her arms. A stream of Japanese came flowing out of his mouth and she was lost. Only knowing a few phrases she blinked up at this stranger.
“I don’t know…?” she said slowly hoping he would understand, “English.” she said “No Japanese?”
He looked taken back for a moment “You go” he said in broken English, accent heavy, pointing at the street. “Police will help, wait there?”
Nodding she followed the crowd and stood with the others waiting for Red to come back. Not that it mattered since he wasn’t going to be able to talk to her. But also, as she was slowly realizing by overhearing people talking around her, that she wasn’t in America anymore and had NO idea where to go or what to do. So Red was her best option at this point. Maybe she could use a translator app? Her mind went into overdrive trying to think of what to do. And then, as it always did when she was panicking her thoughts turned to the only person who was her calm center.
 Eliott.
Where was he? Reaching around she realized she had a purse with her. One she didn’t recognize. It was way too nice. Was that a Chanel label? Holding up the bag she looked it over totally confused. Did she steal this? Ok, she was dreaming. There was no way this was real.
 But it felt so real.
Frowning she rifled through the bag looking for her phone. She just wanted to call Eliott. Desperation filling her body, her heart pounding so hard in her chest it felt like it was going to burst out of her chest. She just wanted her husband.
There was a huge explosion and a few people cheered all of them speaking excitedly in Japanese to each other. The excitement getting louder and louder, people pointing. Turning Olive stood up with the crowd to see a blonde-haired man slowly walking toward the crowd dragging a horned man by the collar of his shirt. Behind him, the red-haired man from earlier held three others on his shoulders.
As he grew closer the blonde turned his eyes meeting Olive’s. His red eyes were so intense that something in her stomach dropped. A weird calm washing over her as he studied her. He felt like something from another life. Dejavu. A dream long forgotten.
“Olive,” his voice was gravely as he dropped the man he had been dragging walking toward her. Looking down at her he placed his arms on her shoulders “what the hell you baka?” he said leaning forward pulling the dazed woman into a strong hug. He smelled like smoke and something sweet, like sugar. It kind of reminded her of camping. However, why this man was hugging her she had NO idea.
And then he pulled back slightly, his eyes fluttering for a moment, leaning toward her face as if he was about to kiss her.  Olive, who was still trying to gain her bearings, felt her whole body tense in pure shock.
 What.
 The.
 Actual.
 Fuck?
“Dude I’m married,” she said swatting away his arms from her side before pushing him away. Her face flushed, eyes glassy as tears threatened to spill over from feeling so overwhelmed by it all..
The blonde’s eyes grew wide studying her for a moment, then gently his hand moved from her shoulder to her forehead speaking in Japanese. The red-haired man had come up behind him and seemed to be responding to what he was saying back. A flush of anger spread over Olive, she had just told his guy she was married and he was still trying to come on to her. Her already very frayed emotions were so tight Olive couldn’t deal with this anymore. Jaw clenched she swatted away this way too friendly guy’s hand.
“Look. No I’m...” she held up her hand and that’s when she saw it.
A ring, but it wasn’t hers.
“What?” she looked down at her hand confused. Was she even in her own body? What was going on? Her hands looked like hers? Do people recognize their own hands? It felt like her body. But how could you tell?
It was too much for her. Her heart pounding in her ears and that campfire smell was all around her filling her lungs. Her breath became shallow as colored spots filled her vision.
 And then everything went black.

You get one true love in your life. One person, you are meant to be with. Olive had always believed that. Especially after meeting Eliott. He had a killer sense of humor and was always so calm. For a girl who always seemed to deal with anxiety and self-doubt the dirty blonde haired man who would rather be enjoying life than dealing with the drama was everything, Olive had wanted and needed in her life.
It wasn’t some epic romance, it was just… normal. From the first time he brought her out for burgers and to watch fireworks.
They ended up in the wrong location missing the entire show. But it didn’t matter, they were too busy talking about their lives. They had ended up staying on the side of that grassy hill just laughing and joking around until 2 am.
He fit so easily into her life Olive had a hard time remembering what it was like without him. She wasn’t as happy that was for sure.
And then one day he was gone.
Like a flash from the cameras, he would use.
As an action photographer, he was hired by both sports and hero agencies for promotional work. Olive had worried about him when he had gotten the job  but with his quirk of being able to walk on walls, he normally could stay out of the way enough to keep himself safe.
Until a month ago when he wasn’t.
A month ago when he was dead.
And Olive’s life wasn’t the same.
A month after a loss is such a weird time. It’s like a limbo between everyone expecting her to be better and her inability to stop crying.
Olive still woke up reaching out for him in the middle of the night only to find an empty bed. Still felt like she could see him around every corner. Still waited for him to come through that door making some snarky joke about some idiot who walked into his shot.
His presence had left such a huge hole in her life and a bigger one in her heart.
That morning she woke up rubbing her swollen eyes looking at herself in the mirror. She was tired of this. Tired of being sad. Tired of missing him. Just tired. Selfishly she just wanted to skip this part of the morning process and go back to being happy again. After all, there was no way she could be sad forever... right? They say time heals all wounds. (Whoever they were.) But she wanted that healing now.
But no one could do that but her.
So sitting down she opened her laptop. Emails from her boss, editor, and an older client of hers littered her email. Scrolling through she tried to decide which one she wanted. She didn’t have the creative energy to talk to her editor and her boss could wait until Monday.
But maybe ghostwriting would help distract her? The client she used to work with had a new story and he was desperate. And in a way she was too.
So clicking the email she started to read what he had to say.
 And then she was here.
In the parking lot of a burning mall in Japan.
The hospital she woke up in was sterile white reminding her of the inside of an apple store. Soft lights filled the room as her eyes fluttered open. She looked around slowly sitting up. Her head was pounding and part of her just wanted to lay back down. But she also wanted some water, her throat feeling ashy crying out for moisture. And maybe an answer to what the hell was going on?
Slowly Olive pulled herself into a sitting position, her body ached from tension but she didn’t really see any other major injuries. Looking around the room praying for a glass of water her eyes instead found a phone sitting on the table next to her. A text on top of the slue of notifications caught her attention.
Lilly Pond: Are you ok? Call me when you get up.
Her best friend. Oh thank god, someone she recognized. This meant she could rule out getting teleported to a different dimension off her list of what the fuck was going on.
Her heart pounded in her chest as she quickly unlocked the phone. Thank god for smart technology and face recognition. (She wouldn’t have known what to do without it). Looking down at the phone there was a brief moment where she forgot why she had opened her phone. Distracted by the image of three young children who she didn’t recognize looked back up at her from her phone background.
Dear god, please don’t tell her she had kids along with a strange wedding ring. Her heart couldn’t handle a full-on Overboard situation. She felt sick and desperate to hear a familiar voice. Something she recognized.
Clicking the name she fumbled for a bit until she figured out how to call.
“Olive?” Lilly’s voice was desperate, “Olive are you ok? Katsuki told me…”
“What? Who?” Olive cut her friend off confused by this Katsuski, “Lilly I don’t know where I am… I… I think I’m in Japan.”
There was a long pause on the other end. “Yeah Olive… you…” Another long pause, Olive could tell her bestie was trying to remain calm for her sake, “What do you remember?” In the background, Olive heard a little voice say something. But Lilly didn’t have kids… right?
“I… Eliott’s funeral, uhhh going back to work. I think it’s been maybe a month since he died?” who was she kidding, she knew it was 4 weeks and 3 days. But she didn't want to sound like she was counting.
“Olive, it’s been over 5 years since Eliott died.”
Olive felt like she was going to throw up. Wait... what?
“What?” she felt like there was a mound of sand in her throat. She wanted to gag at the feeling. Her heart raced so fast she couldn’t breathe. She was suffocating. “But, that’s not possible. Eliott.. I… Lilly why can’t I remember anything!?! Why the FUCK AM I IN JAPAN!?!”
“Olive you need to calm down...”
Olive wanted Eliott, she wanted his stormy gray-blue eyes and calm voice to tell her to just breathe. ‘If you're breathing you're alive, just keep breathing.’ was what he would always say when she was working herself up over something that probably didn't matter. She missed him, she wanted him.
“No” Olive sobbed covering her mouth, “I...”
“Is Kasusuki there? Olive? Nate? call Kasushk she’s freaking out..” Lilly’s voice called off the phone to her fiance, well it would be husband at this point. Wait was that little voice?
The blonde from earlier came rushing in cutting off her millions of thoughts. He was holding his phone to his ear but quickly hung up as he saw her. Those red eyes wide as he walked up to her. “Olive…” he said softly as he approached. At the sound of her name, she shrunk back shaking her head slightly.
“Lilly, I honestly don’t know what’s going on.”
“That’s your husband Olive.” Lilly’s voice said back, “You moved to Japan with him two and a half years ago.”
“I’m going to be sick.” she choked out. “This is a dream, I can't…”
“Oh Olive” Lilly’s voice sounded far away as Olive felt dizzy.
“No, no no.” the blonde said -what did Lilly call him? Suki?- gently prying the phone out of her hand, “Calm down, focus. Don’t pass out.”
“I don’t know what’s going on,” Olive told him, trying to make him understand. Trying to make herself understand.
“Yeah I can tell.” he said, “They don’t know why. They said you were fine.”
 “They?”
 “The Doctors.”
“Oh.” her voice trailed off for a moment as he picked up her phone Lilly still on the other end.
“I have her. She will call you back,” he said before hanging up. A flash of anger folded Olive. How dare he just hang up on her best friend.
“Uhhh excuse me! I was talking to her.”
“You can call her back, I need you to talk to me,” he said brushing away her comment. A flicker of a smile flashed over his face for a moment and Olive had no idea why. This wasn’t funny. Why would he be laughing?
“Who are you?” Olive said studying him unsure about the man next to her. She trusted Lilly when she said she was married to him but also… she didn’t trust him.
 She didn’t know him.
“I’m your husband,” his voice softened as his gaze roamed over her as if looking for injuries. Probably not believing the doctors. “What is the last thing you remember?”
“I… Eliott.” her voice was soft and she didn’t miss the way he flinched at the name. “He… He’s dead.”
“Yeah” he said nodded gently brushing away a strand of her dark hair away from her face.
“And now I’m in Japan.” She was in shock, trying to make sense of it all.
 “Yeah,” was his simple resonance.
“And I don’t know how,” she concluded unsure how to explain to this complete stranger that he was, in fact, a complete stranger to her.
He sighed looking down at her hands, his finger brushing over the large yellow diamond on her left hand. Olive looked down as well, it was much larger and impressive than her ring. But… it felt so wrong. Looking back up at him she felt like she was going to cry again.
“Are you going to cry?” he asked, it sounded like a statement. She shook her head already feeling hot tears welling up in her eyes.
 “No”
He sighed, it sounded frustrated and made her heart pound with an anxiety she hadn’t felt in years. But he still hugged her, pulling her close enveloping her in that sweet warm scent she had smelled at the mall. However, this time in the calm of the hospital room it was confronting. Or as comforting as a stranger hugging you could be.
She felt his arms tightened around her as she let out a shaky sob. His grip was so strong as if he was scared she would run away.
But where would she go if she tried?

BATTLE ROYALE: MANGA
Newsarama’s article on Battle Royale manga and an interview with editor Mark Paniccia and adapter Keith Giffen. Originally published on Newsarama’s website in 2003.

The five stages of becoming a warrior on The Program.
In May (2003), Tokyopop will shrug off the image of a company that mainly publishes shojo manga with the debut of Battle Royale, the manga based on the highly controversial novel and movie. Newsarama spoke with editor Mark Paniccia and adapter Keith Giffen for more.
First things first, make no mistake. Tokyopop is publishing Battle Royale with its 'Mature Ages 18+' advisory on it. It is not for anyone under 18, and even some readers over that age will find it a tough read.
Combining themes from Lord of the Flies and The Running Man, creator Koushun Takami wrote the novel Battle Royale in 1999. The novel was then adapted into a movie by the late director Kinji Fukasaku and has spawned legions of fans. Takami went on to write the manga of the same name, collaborating with artist Masayuki Taguchi. The series is still being published in Japan.

The novel, movie, and now manga have polarized readers in Japan, due to the manga's content. In a nutshell, the "Battle Royale" itself is "The Program," a television show in a morally and sociologically bankrupt, Stalinistic future that picks random classes of 9th grade students and puts them on an abandoned island for a televised fight to the death.
The future depicted by Takami resonates with a 1984 (or current-day America, depending on your viewpoint) feel - the students who are enlisted into the game are doing their patriotic duty, and the state is very proud of them and their "willing" sacrifice.
Tumblr media
Mr. Kamon - administrator of The Program
The island is divided into grids, and the students are all given kits, which include one weapon, as well as the basic necessities, such as first aid, a compass, a map, field rations, and water; and explosive collars which detonate if a student tries to escape or goes into a forbidden grid. The beaches of the island are guarded by soldiers, and from time to time, random grid squares are declared danger zones, and after a given time, the explosive collars of any students in the square will detonate. If the students band together, after a period of 24 hours with no kill, all the explosive collars will detonate. Forty-two students begin the game, last student alive at the end of three days wins.
Battle Royale's editor knows what you're thinking. "You're right, that's pretty depressing," Paniccia said. "But the themes that play throughout it - friendship, trust, loyalty, faith - keep you glued to the page because you can truly relate to some of the stuff the teens are experiencing.
"We can all remember having a crush on someone, or wanting to be like the cool guy, or having a friend who stood up for you. Now you're thrown into a situation where you have to kill the girl you like, or the guy who stuck up for you or the kid you admire and that's where you really get drawn into the series."
In the first installment, students who stand up against authority of The Program are killed, alliances are formed, and despite the hopelessness and virtual nilhism of the story, a sense of optimism sneaks in - maybe the story's two protagonists will beat the odds and will both come out the other end alive.
It's a unique story, and that was one of the things that made Tokyopop want to bring it to American audiences. "I can honestly say I've never seen anything like it before," Paniccia said. "It's a really strong story with strong messages and it's not afraid to use really, really strong images. Tokyopop wanted to publish something that would strike a nerve. My nerves are struck."
Tumblr media
Choices, choices...
Tokyopop isn't pushing the project out for its salacious value alone - not by any means. While, as with all product they carry, retailers will be responsible for the location and clientele allowed to purchase Battle Royale, Tokyopop is sensitive to concerns over the content. "My jaw dropped when I flipped through the pages of the first volume," Paniccia said. "I'd have to say I was more than a bit concerned about the extremity of the content. But thanks to Keith's experience and his compulsively creative mind, the adaptation of this book is in good hands."
That's not saying it's cleaned up or sanitized for American audiences by any means, though. If anything, Giffen delighted in aiming the disturbing nature of the story directly between the eyes of an American audience. But more on that in a minute - according to Paniccia, Giffen was a needed ingredient in the Tokyopop version of Battle Royale from the beginning, something that will hopefully allow the publisher to make a strong presence in comic book shops.
"Who else could this? In the beginning, one of the things we thought we needed was a recognizable comic book writer on the series," Paniccia said. "I figured the content would turn off the book retailers and the comic shops would be our best outlet. When I found out from Keith's Dominion partner, Ross Richie, that he was a big fan of the Battle Royale movie, I called him and we talked about it for a while. Keith's reputation for controversy and his enthusiasm for the property were the perfect ingredients. And thus, soon, people will hold in their hands the most infamous manga in history."
For adapting the work, Giffen was given a tight Japanese-to-English translation of the story, but his assignment was by no means just to tweak a translation. "I told him to do what he felt he had to do," Paniccia said. "I told him to Giffenize it."
It was a charge Giffen was more than happy to accept. "It's a good story that Takami is telling," Giffen said. "What I do is go in and make bad scenes that much worse. I loved Battle Royale the movie, and also love the manga. I just wanted to do it right. I wanted to do justice to it, and I knew I couldn't get away with doing a straight translation, because it would be horrifyingly bad.
"A lot of times when you work on Japanese books, you realize that they have a different pacing from us, and they also have different visual and narrative shorthand," Giffen continued. "For example, somebody may be looking at someone else with gossamer eyes and thinking good thoughts about them, and the word balloons will just say the person's name - over and over, or spend two pages trying to get the name out. That wouldn't play with American readers.
Tumblr media
Deceiving a Friend.
"Battle Royale had stuff like, "I have to kill you first, because you would have killed me otherwise." The translation is right on the nose. You can't give that to an American audience. Specifically, in the scene where the wicked girl almost slices her friend's head off with a sickle - in the translation, she said, 'I had to kill you before you killed me.' No way - I changed it to 'Fashion tip, red's not your color,' as the dead girl lies on the floor in a growing pool of blood.
"There was another line, during the orientation where the students want to know what Mr. Kamon did to the lady at the orphanage. The scene of what he did is pretty graphic, and the original translation had him saying, 'Oh, I sexually assaulted her.'
"I wanted to make it worse. I changed it to, 'With the right persuasion, she was more than willing to share it around.' Not quite as literal as the translation, but it clearly, clearly expresses just how sleazy and reprehensible Kamon is. That's the way it is with all the graphic content in the book - it's there, and some of it is even of a sexual nature, but it's not like you're going to enjoy it for its own sake. It's my job to make sure you don't."
It's a tightrope, Giffen explained, that he has to walk in adapting the work for American readers. Go too far, and you can end up writing your own story. Don't go far enough, and you end up with a jumbled mess that halts the story.
Tumblr media
WARNING! VERY GRAPHIC IMAGE - the price of being deceived
"To do this right, you've got to keep the basic flavor of the original work - this is a guy who wrote the original novel who's doing this, so you can't go in and completely rework it and change it around, but you've got to filter it for American audiences," Giffen said. "You've got to massage it a little bit and see if you can move it just to a place where an American audience will appreciate it.
"Being able to go in there and while keeping the tone, tweaking it a little bit, I'm able to put my voice in. Rather than making it 'mine' though I'm doing a lovely two-part harmony with Takami. It's not my story, so I try to remain true to the spirit of the work. Sometimes that means dropping a colloquialism or adding blocks of copy that will allow the American audience to understand it the same way a Japanese audience would. The key rule that I always keep in mind though is: don't violate the story, don't violate the work."
But even for the creator of Lobo, Battle Royale can occasionally offer Giffen some material that is a challenge to take from simply bad to worse. "There are scenes coming up that poleaxed me," Giffen said. "This is intense shit. Brutally intense, and it does freeze me in my tracks sometimes. I'm no stranger to the gutter, but there are two scenes coming up where I had to call Mark and ask if he was sure we wanted to reprint them."
At the same time though, Giffen echoed Panaccia's sentiments on the work and how, while the violence can be frankly, distasteful at points, the emotional connection Takami creates between the readers and characters keeps you hooked.
"It's not just kids slaughtering one another," Giffen said. "It's fascinating because there's all this background there of who these kids are, and why they react the way they do to this horrific situation. For example, when Akamatsu climbs on the roof with the crossbow and becomes the game's first killer, Takami takes the time to show you why the gentlest, nicest kid in the class has become this cold-blooded killer.
"The most reprehensible acts are not by any means excused, and they're not always explained, but you see incidents in the person's past where, because of particular life experiences, characters act in certain ways when confronted with this horrific situation. It's really well thought out."
Tumblr media
While he's able to admire the approach Takami took with the characters, Giffen also reiterates Paniccia's admonition about the series. "This is in no way, shape or form for kids," Giffen said. "This really, really is an adult comic, just due to the intensity of the content, from the ideas behind it, to the graphic depictions of the actions. There's more than just the violence, there's more than just the controversy. There's a lot of stuff going on here. It's not for kids. It's a multi-layered story. It sure as hell ain't your daddy's comics, I'll give you that much.
"But maybe it will open a few doors. My son and his friends are in the 18-19 year old group, and they're dying to see it. There's a real hunger for manga out there, and so far Tokyopop has managed to corner the female market, as well as the manga enthusiast market. Battle Royale can kick open that door even farther - it's much, much more accessible a book to the straight, standard comic book fan than a lot of other manga product out there. It's very linear, very straightforward. The art is obviously manga, but no so far out there that the American sensibility falls apart. It's going to be an interesting project. Even if it's not the most popular book they publish, it's certainly going to be the most infamous. That said though, kudos to Tokyopop for publishing the manga series of a property that the American film companies were terrified to release the movie of. It puts Warners and Sony and Fox to shame."
With the first volume due in May, Paniccia said that Tokyopop has the rights to reprint the first eight volumes of the manga, and he's planning in his adapter sticking around for the run.
"Keith seems to be having the time of his life so I hope he sticks with it for the grand finale," Paniccia said. "It wouldn't be the same without him."
And that sounds fine by Giffen. "It's a kick when you get to contribute in some way to something that you originally came upon as a fan, and just love, as I do with Battle Royale," Giffen said. "I was happy to contribute however little I could to Battle Royale, and wouldn't mind give some other manga series a try. I just wish I could get my hands on Love Hina…"

Translation Notes
1. Shindou is the reading for 神童 (prodigy) as well as 震動 (tremor, vibration)
2. 鯖 is the character for mackerel, with the fish radical on the left
3. Jizo or Kshitigarbha is a bodhisattva who is the guardian of children
4. Backchanelling means “ a sound or gesture made to give continuity to a conversation by a person who is listening to another.” The Japanese word is aizuchi which I couldn’t find a good way to explain in the text
5. Banchou Sarayashiki is a ghost story with several versions, all of which involve a servant, 10 dishes, and broken trust. I think the version referred to in this chapter is the folk version where a beautiful servant is blamed and killed for breaking one of ten dishes, and came back as a ghost counting the dishes
6. King says 住人が十人 (juunin ga juunin)

Musa Kamara parted with Kiyose at Chikusei-sou's entryway and climbed the stairs to the second floor to return to his room.
When he had just arrived here last spring, he had been terribly anxious about living in a wooden house, and he had been nervous walking in the hallway. In his hometown, the house where his family lived was a colonial Western style house made of stone. He couldn't imagine things like thin walls that allowed you to hear people talking from next door or narrow hallways that made even passing by someone difficult.
But now, Musa loved the building Chikusei-sou itself, and its residents who were in the same generation as him.
Musa thought about Kakeru, who he was introduced to in the bathroom of the main house. He hoped he would able to get along well with Kakeru. Musa recalled his quick and nimble movements, like he did some kind of sport, and how he looked at Musa with a slightly bewildered look, and his determined eyes. No doubt, Musa thought, no doubt Kakeru will also fit in here quickly.
The door to Room 202, which was in the middle of the three rooms on the left side of the hallway and just before Musa's room, was slightly open. He passed by and peeked inside. The resident of this room was Sakaguchi Youhei, a fourth-year sociology student, and the one who lived in Room 205, which faced Musa's room, was Sugiyama Takashi, a third-year business student. They were watching TV together.
"Good evening."
Musa greeted them because he felt like talking to someone. The two in the room turned around. "Oh, come in," they carefreely urged.
He was served with a can of beer with water droplets on it, and he sat in seiza on the tatami.
"King-san, are you watching quiz shows again?"
Looking at the celebrities pushing buzzer buttons in the cathode-ray tube, Musa was a little bit shocked. Sakaguchi of Room 202 had a pastime of watching all the quiz shows, even recording them. At Chikusei-sou, he was called King with some teasing. It had the meaning of "Quiz King."
"'Course I am."
As he said that, King violently hit the tissue box placed close at hand. And then, "The Baths of Caracalla!"
He shouted the answer to the question at the TV in a loud voice. The tissue box was his substitute for a buzzer.
"I never get bored when I watch a quiz show with King-san."
Sugiyama laughed, encouraging Musa to drink bear with his hand. "He makes incredible reactions."
Sugiyama's nickname was "Shindou." At first, Musa felt suspicious as to why this person with such a quiet way of speaking was called "Tremor." (1) Shindou had immediately told him, "You're mistaken."
"I was born in a village deep in the mountains. It takes two days for me to make my homecoming. Oh, do you know 'homecoming'?"
"Yes, I do. But does it really take you two days? Even when I go back to my home country, it takes about a day to fly from Japan to there."
"Oof, so I come from a place that's farther than your hometown timewise? I'm seeing how deep in the hinterlands my village is once again. Oh, you know what 'hinterlands' mean?"
"I do not know that. Does it mean rural?"
"Yes, exactly. In that village, I'm called 'Shindou.' Well, just a local one, anyways. Oh, 'shindou' has the meaning of 'child of the gods'…"
The residents of Chikusei-sou mostly spoke to Musa in rapid slang without any consideration for him. In the first place, Musa had an intermediate or higher level of Japanese proficiency, but he was at a loss with slang. Only Shindou carefully explained the slang he didn't know and the difficult words for him. Thanks to him, Musa had come to be able to speak Japanese more and more comfortably. Even so, since he was following the example of the well-mannered and gentlemanly Shindou, he tried to avoid using the slang he learned as much as possible. Nico-chan, who lived on the first floor, sometimes laughed that "I can't feel on edge with Musa's language."
While drinking beer, Musa watched the quiz show for a while.
Only King, the twins, and Nico-chan had TVs in Chikusei-sou. Because the smoke pollution in Nico-chan's room is awful, they rarely approached there. King watched quiz shows endlessly. That was why when there was a show they wanted to watch, they generally went to the twins' room.
Even now, they could hear the sounds of the TV from the twins' room, but no sounds of talking. Apparently, they were spend in the night quietly with just the twins without being disturbed by the noisy senpais.
Without getting bored, King continued to hit the tissue box and answer questions from outside the cathode-ray tube. And then as soon as it turned to commercial, he fast forwarded through it with the remote control on hand. Is this a video? Musa noticed for the first time.
The commercials quickly flew past, and then the show came back on again. This time, it wasn't a corner with a quick buzzer format. King finally averted his consciousness a little bit away from the TV.
"Hey, Musa. Shindou is keeping quiet and watching the quiz show. It's unbelievable."
Unsure of what he was saying, Musa tilted his head. King turned all the way around to face Musa and Shindou, who were sitting next to each other.
"When you're watching a quiz show, wanting to answer the questions is human nature. It's like, 'Writing 青 with the left fish radical becomes…?' 'Mackerel!' (2) And yet he's keeping quiet. There's no competition here."
"King-san, you shout out the answers even when you're watching by yourself."
Musa said, as he thought about hearing King shouting out contextless words night after night from the room next door.
"Of course I do. That's what quiz shows are for. I really don't get guys who just watch stiffly like Jizo." (3)
Is that so, Musa thought.
"Is that so?"
Shindou said aloud, objecting. "I think it is you who's in the minority, King-san. I have no idea how you can get so fired up when you aren't even a contestant."
"Why don't you try apply for the program as a contestant?" Musa interjected.
King visited quiz websites on the Internet and enthusiastically tackled quiz questions everyday. He was so devoted to quizzes that he even stepped into the smoke hell that everyone was afraid of to borrow Nico-chan's computer. Surrounding him from a distance, the residents of Chikusei-sou watched over his passion for taking quizzes.
"Answering questions faster, more accurately, and more than the famous quiz kings from outside the screen is the way of enjoyment for true connoisseurs."
King puffed up with pride. King seemed bold and shameless, but he actually had social anxiety, so he couldn't appear on television or anything like that. Musa, who became aware of that, didn't say anything more. Shindou also gently backchanneled with "Is that so." (4)
King seemed a bit awkward, so Musa decided to provide a new topic.
"Do you two already know that a new person has come to Aotake?"
"When did they get here?!"
"What kind of person are they?"
The two instantly bent their bodies forward. King even lowered the TV volume. It seemed that it was quite an interesting topic for him and Shindou. Musa was pushed by the momentum and told them about meeting Kakeru in the bath.
"I believe he just arrived tonight. Haiji-san says he's enrolled in the sociology program. Haiji-san seemed happy."
"I have a bad feeling about this," King muttered.
"Why is that? Kakeru seems like a serious and good person."
"The character of the newcomer is not what King-san is worried about," Shindou explained. "You know about it too, right, Musa? About how Haiji-san is eager to have Room 103 filled."
"Yes, but what about that?"
"That's the point." King put an elbow on his crossed legs and affectedly stroked his chin with his palm. "Musa, you must also have kept hearing it since spring. Haiji muttering 'Just one more, just one more…' like 'Banchou Sarayashiki.'" (5)
"What is a Ban-chou Sara-ya-shiki?"
"That's a—"
Cutting off Shindou before he could tell him, King came to a conclusion.
"There's definitely something going on. Haiji is plotting something."
"Why is it so important to him that ten people live in Aotake?"
Shindou tilted his head, thinking. King solemnly began his deduction.
"This is my fourth year living here, but ten tenants…that just now wasn't a pun." (6)
"I understand. Continue."
"There has never been ten people living here. That's because there are only nine rooms here."
"That's right."
"However, this year is different. It was decided that the twins will have Room 201. And then, Haiji started chanting like a phantom. 'Just one more.'"
"It's true that Haiji-san seemed fixated on ten people."
Musa also nodded. Kiyose would probably be dispassionate and not show much emotion no matter what turmoil occurred in Chikusei-sou. However, this year, it could be seen almost too easily that he was worrying over whether or not there would be a tenant in the vacant Room 103. Musa had also wondered what was that about, and thought it was strange.
"What exactly is going to happen when there are ten people?"
"No idea."
Despite the conversation he started, he threw his suspicions away quite easily. "Maybe a ghost counting plates will show up."
"You were the one who kept going on about how 'there must be something, there must be something,' so how about thinking about it a bit more?"
Shindou complained at King, who had pulled out of the conversation and was once again absorbed in the TV. However, King was already preoccupied with the quizzes and only returning vague responses. Musa and Shindou discussed Kiyose's intentions for a while, but unable to come to a definite conclusion before very long and ended it.
Room 202 fell into silence for a short while.
Even the TV was waiting for the answer of the quiz contestant with an exaggerated pause. King murmured, "At any rate, if it's the case that something bad happens to us, Haiji will let us know. He's naggy and makes snide comments when you skip cleaning the toilets, but well, other than that, he's a good guy."
That's exactly right, Musa thought. It was impossible that Kiyose would do anything that trap the residents of Chikusei-sou into a difficult situation.
Musa did not have a "bad premonition." That was because the Kiyose he met just earlier seemed quite happy. About as happy as when Musa saw snow piling up for the first time in his life last year.

Or so here I am again… :D on my probably idiotic mission to translate and analyze this song XD (because I suck at analyzing lyrics, and music and I don’t speak japanese…perfect groundwork to do this, right? XD)
I’m just here with a quick status update, down below :)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I hope I’ve got all the mistakes in the transcription away now….sorrry if something is still there, I started this at 3 am ‘cause I couldn’t sleep XD
So yeah in the two pictures up there you got the lyrics in romaji and in kanji and the best english translation i could produce with the help of translator websites, because again…i don’t speak or can read japanese…XD
And now for a rough explanation, or maybe first even a first rough analyze of the lyrics, without looking at any stuff from the manga or anime:
“Beautiful city, clear blue sky, familiar people
I didn’t have any particular complaints
I always felt
Awakening heart lurking in the chest /Heart that wakes up”
Talking about his home
Being generally content with everything
But feels something is missing
Something is waking up
Something new is coming
“Even when it’s time to leave for a lonely (faraway?) country I’ve never seen
I wasn’t expecting anything special
I met that day
Break (/Defeat) the awake (/cold) heart
Shocking shaking now”
Goes away from his home to another country
(Possibly alone?
He feels lonely / thinks he is lonely)
Hasn’t been there before
Still didn’t think anything special about it
Hadn’t any expectations
Thought of it of unnecessary?
BUT!
Met someone else, one day
Melted his ‘cold heart’
Made him feel excited
Shocked him / left him shocked
“I slept deep in my soul
Oh the flames burned up
The world will be scortched hot
I can’t hide anymore
My instinct”
He hid away, ’slept’
Never gave anything his everything
But the flames burned up, were lighted up by this person
His passion would burn everything
He would show the world, especially this person
He knows he can’t hide himself anymore
Has to follow his instinct
“Born in this world to fight to compete
Sharp blades when you see each other
Then just hit
Hugging Heart
Aiming for unprecedented height now”
A lot of pressure on him, from day one
Never got anything for free / takes nothing for granted
Hard work behind everything
Meets this person usually on a ‘battle field’ (the kitchen)
Something changed,
o   1. Tried to keep away, protect his ‘heart’, wanted to stay away
o   2. The person came closer, got more familiar with him, not a pure rivalry anymore but more, person came close to his ‘heart’
Started to aim for something more now, wanted to achieve more, widened his goal
“The voice of the soul wanted
Oh, let go of my heart
Let me bet everything
I can’t give up anymore
My instinct”
His ‘soul’ (heart?) wanted something else than his mind
This person came to close now, having a hold of his heart
He wants to get away again
He faces a new challenge and something precious is on the lone
Knows he can’t give up, has to keep going,
o   Maybe doesn’t solely fights for himself?
It’s what his ‘instinct’ (mind?) tells him to
“Under the half-moon floating in the sky
Oh, I’m going to exchange
Even if it fell (/ I fall?) down somewhere
Get up again”
Only the half of something whole (half-moon)
The other half is dark, away, threatened?
He gives away something (maybe to get the other half back?)
He knows there will be more challenges that could bring him down
Is determined to get up again.
“Burned in the back of the (/my?) soul
Oh, flame, tell me
Leave this instinct (/Leave yourself to instinct)
Just challange
My instinct”
A decision already made up by his ‘soul’ (heart?)
Wants his ‘soul’ (heart?) to decide what is right?
Torn between instinct (mind) and flame / soul (heart)
Decides to follow his heart
Alternate: (not sure if koro (ころ) or kono (この) in the third line)
o   ‘leave yourself to instinct’ = follow your head, because the heart (soul, flame) couldn’t provide an answer
o   Thus staying with his rational side
Ok so…that’s it so far…now comes the hard part, looking deeper into the lyrics and music, looking how it changes and connecting lyrics to evidence from takumi’s character (and possible character developement) from the manga and anime (if I get my hands on the light novel maybe i’ll take that into consideration as well ;) )
for anyone reading this far…thanks Q.Q like for putting up with this shit :’)

HGPC 15 - 16 | Muhyo and Roji’s s2 2 (14) | God of High School 2 | Deca-Dence 2 - 3 | Fugou Keiji 3 | Appare 4
HGPC 15
Is this Element of Water? Or Element of Plants?
HGPC 16
I sort of suspected the three broke up because it would have been like someone stole Fumi from Tetsuya…and I was right. You know that myth about how guys and gals can’t be friends ever? It seems to be in service of that.
It’s Nodoka Hanadera.
…I wonder if this vow will become relevant later?
There was a poster for the Ojamajo Doremi project, Looking for Witch Apprentices (Majo Minarai wo Sagashite). Makes sense though – they’re by the same studio.
Fest = festival, although not in the matsuri sense of the word. It’s more like a smaller, non-seasonal matsuri.
I wonder if the tree will be attacked?
I’m still wondering…how does a penguin have paws?
Is there a tiny tree?...Yep. Just a small sprout, but it is a new tree.
Muhyo and Roji’s s2 ep 2 (14)
…and they continue to misgender Goryo…the manga’s finished translation, so I don’t see why the translator couldn’t go and get a copy to check. (Unless I remembered wrong and misgendering him was actually something they did up until a point? Looks are deceiving, especially in anime…) It’s even on the Shonen Jump website.
I realised that I’m the only Muhyo and Roji’s fan, possibly in existence, in the English world right now…if I were to leave this show alone, it would die alone…and that would be far too sad.
The Showa era was a time of great Japanese prosperity, so it makes sense that there would be lots of building projects too.
“Working from home” – Makes more sense in this day and age.
Oh, I didn’t expect them to put in a really close reference! This probably refers to Minky Momo, except that seems to be an 80s series.
…if this were any other series, this girl would get isekaid.
Japanese doesn’t have a lot of gender-specific words, like I know Italian does. When Ebisu says “Ma’am”, he’s going “yes?” in the Japanese and Nana goes “kono hito…” (This person…) rather than “This woman…”…If they’re going to dub it with all these references to Goryo being a woman intact, then I suggest they not dub it at all.
I think this is the first time Muhyo’s thrown the orb he generates…
I know all this misgendering is going to bug me, but…this is one of the first series I finished. I can’t get in touch with the translators to tell them they misgendered a character, because I have no authority – if I, a rookie translator, went up against pros, based only on what I know of the Japanese language and my memory of the manga…I’d be toast!...However, I shall try, for the sake of the manga I still cherish the memories of.
God of High School 2
Apparently this dude *gestures at this bespectacled man in the first few seconds of the episode* is Iron Man (well, Robert Downey Jnr.)…but also the POTUS. Yeah, that’s confusing, but I’m just parroting what I’ve heard.
Okay, someone explain to me what “charyeok” i-Oh. It’s a concept endemic to God of High School. You could’ve translated the Korean term, people.
Mujin…that sounds familiar…ah! The organiser of the GOH tournament! That’s why.
LOL, there’s a “Yes Man” in the brackets, paired off with Daewi.
Mori is eating a banana, huh? Way to play up the monkey imagery.
Slipper jerk…? (I admit it’s been a few weeks and several anime since I saw the last episode, because I was working on the boss battle for the AniList watching club, so remind me whio that is…?) Update: That would be Manseok.
I would assume the flashbacks are actually the characters’ introductions in the webcomic, if Mori’s was any indication.
LOL, I forgot how much advertising they put all over this thing…
So Mori uses taekwondo, but what’s Daewi’s style again…?
I would assume this refers to the Korean War if it’s referring to anything real. I’ve never heard of a properly-named style of anything which was an “anything goes” style, unless you count the various wacky martial arts in Ranma ½.
Geesh, Elfen Lied with its gore was a breeze to get through, but seeing scenes like Nozomi getting tortured (in Magical Girl Spec-Ops Asuka) and Gamdo getting his arm twisted here…that’s nasty…
Uhh…I swear this is just Hisoka (from Hunter x Hunter)…or Chrollo (from the same series). (LOL…?)
Deca-Dence 2
W-Wuh? You mean, Deca-Dence is a game of sorts?! VR or something?!
This aesthetic is very much like neurons…and cartoons…
(Spoilers for Kado!) If you’re wondering what’s going through my head right now, I feel similar to when Kado became a a fighting show and zaShunina the villain.
Ah, giant ball trackpads (trackballs). I miss those…
I think “The Power” is “ka no chikara”, but I might be wrong. Update: Yup, that’s what the site says.
This ED is interesting, visually speaking.
Deca-Dence 3
I get the feeling the girl – the friend - was programmed to say things to dissuade people from joining the Power.
A lesser show would discard Fennel, I think. See, he popped up in conversation the other time and now here he is in the…uh, digital (?)…flesh.
Sounds like AI, doesn’t it?
This guy reminds me of Kamina from Gurren Lagann…then again, so do the Inferno Cop sunglasses on Hugin.
Those rings on the white-haired guy’s hands remind me of Hifumi’s…for some reason, the host has them.
Pipe is a Gadoll, but he (?) reacts terrified to the yell of “Gadoll!”, hmm?
Fugou Keiji 3
It’s backkkkkkkkkk!
Ooh, mooncake! Also, Daisuke…okay, calling Kambe by his first name is weird, so Kambe…only has one stud in his left [ear]. That’s interesting.
Notably, there is no age listed for Kambe on the official website. We only know he’s < 30.
…LOL, Kambe is such a petulant child.
Ah? Rounin? (That’s what you call someone who failed to get into uni and tries again.)
Atsuta Jingu. It’s in Nagoya.
LOL, got in trouble for a barrel roll. (partially joking)
Ah, so that’s what Onuki and Miyano (voices of Kambe and Kato) were talking about at the con – the fact the director says a lot with a little.
Huh? Is this like that one killer who was streaming their stuff online to garner fans for the YouTuber PewdiePie? (I forget which prolific case that is, though.) Update: I think that’s the Christchurch bombings.
The stud seems to be Kambe’s connection with HEUSC.
The group’s name is read “Yokoitsu”.
Those missiles were just for producing smoke, it seems.
I just realised the finger gun from Kato in the ED looks a lot like Spike Spiegel’s (Cowboy Bebop).
Appare 4
I missed this anime as well! AMQ makes you miss shows even more than usual, it seems.
I love how they made a Red Stapler incident (see TV Tropes on an explanation for that) out of this one boat-car.
Not even tea can convince the great Appare…(partially sarcastic)
You need a big imagination to do a test run of a car in your head…
The song “I got it!” seems very appropriate for a moment like this (Xialian’s racing debut).
I’m worried David will ram Xialian’s car…
…I predicted it. What’s going to happen now…?
