To Have & To Hold: Part 1

Fandom: Marvel - Moon Knight (Mafia AU)

Pairing: Marc Spector x F!Reader, Steven Grant x F!Reader, Jake Lockley x F!Reader

Summary: To ensure you're always safe even after his passing, your father, a mob boss, makes you marry his right hand, Marc Spector. You don't necessarily hate Marc, but you don't get along either. Therefore, this marriage of convenience may be a bit difficult for you.

A/N: another series because idk. felt like it.

"-I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride." You turn to your now husband and give him a smile. He pulls you in, pressing his lips to yours. There's hollers and whistles all around you. On the outside, you appear to be a couple so in love. On the inside, your heart is dropping to your stomach.

6 Months Earlier

"I-I thought you said you were getting better," you look at your father in disbelief. He had just delivered some heart breaking news: he was dying.

For the past few years, he's been receiving treatment and he seemed to be getting better. Turns out, within the last year, he stopped treatment because he was getting tired.

"I was, but sunshine, I just couldn't take it anymore. I'm tired and I'm getting old. I just want to enjoy the last bit of life I have left."

Anger started building up within you. You clenched your jaw and tightened your fists, "But if you end your treatments, you don't get to enjoy life much after! Dad, please just-"

He holds up a hand and you stop talking, "I've already made up my mind, Sunny. And if you're concerned with your financial state-"

"You seriously think I'm concerned with that?" you can't help but be hurt by your father's insinuation.

"You're right. I'm sorry. I know you've never cared for this life," he gestures around to his office, "But, you should know something."

"What?" you're mentally preparing yourself for even more heartbreaking news.

"You and Marc are to be married."

Your eyes widen and your jaw drops, "Are you kidding me?!"

"He will be taking over as my successor once I'm gone and, to make sure you're well taken care of, you'll be marrying him." Your father states everything as factual, giving no room for refusal or compromise.

"But what if I'm already dating someone?"

"You're not. I know you're not. I still have my eyes on you despite you being an adult."

You scoff, "Un-fucking-believable."

There's a knock at your father's office door and he says, "Come in."

The man of the hour, Marc, enters the room. He sees your fuming expression and can't help but smirk, "I see he's told you."

"Clearly. And you're okay with this?!"

Marc shrugs, "Could be worse. Plus, we don't hate each other so this marriage won't be completely unbearable."

You scoff, "Speak for yourself!" you whip around to your father, "Dad-"

"I'm just looking out for you, sunshine."

"And if I don't go through with this?"

Your father's eyes darken, "You can say good-bye to that charity organization you've been working so hard towards."

"You wouldn't."

"Don't forget who still has the power here, sweetheart."

You look to Marc whom still has a neutral expression. You felt conflicted. You'd thought that in this day and age, you'd be able to make your own choices, be able to find someone who you love and they love you back. But the world you've grown up in isn't normal. Your dad is a well known mob boss and he has power. Marc isn't terrible, but you don't know him well. But the charity organization you've been working so hard towards helped children in the community. If your dad takes that away, they won't have anything.

"Fine," you say through gritted teeth, "I'll go through with this."

Your dad's expression changes to glee, "Wonderful! You have six months to get to know each other better before the wedding."

You look at him in surprise, "You already have the wedding date planned?"

"Yes, but the venue, dress, and all of that stuff will be left to you two, of course."

You roll your eyes, "Gee thanks."

"Congratulations you two. Let's have a drink!" you sit and watch as Marc goes to your father's liquor cabinet and pours the three of you a drink. With raised glasses, your father exclaims, "To the L/N Legacy!" the three of you clink glasses and you down the entire glass. You're going to need a lot more where that came from.

Summary: Usually Natsu felt like he knew everything when it came to Lucy. He knows she loves him but now it's come time to propose and he's not so sure if marriage is something she wants.

This was written for @fleuve-des-etoiles for the @allaboutnalu 2023 Gift Exchange. Sorry it took so long to get out. Life has me busy but I loved writing this.

Lucy didn’t like surprises. Her friends knew her birthdays weren’t to be made a fuss of and any special achievements such as her book award required no more than a personal, close-circle dinner at a budget-friendly restaurant. No splashing out on her account.

If she took the care to analyse this feeling properly she could probably identify the source as some unspecifiable upset from the hundreds of surprises that came from having wealth. There were the low-effort, entirely symbolic trinkets that counted as birthday presents from her father – usually bought by the house staff – which didn’t make for a great foundation of trust in gift giving. And there were the bountiful gifts from potential courters, all with a transparent intention behind them wrapped up in crepe paper and finished with professionally tied bows. She had had enough of gifts by the time she left the Heartfilia mansion.

As such, a dilemma arose upon the start of her relationship with Natsu. Her love language was quality time, either by themselves or with Happy. It didn’t matter where, as long as she could enjoy her time with her new boyfriend. Natsu's, however, was gift giving.

Lucy had explained to him after the third little trinket that he had given her for no particular reason other than he liked it and thought it would look pretty on her that she simply wasn’t interested in that sort of thing. It set off something in her that made her want to cry that she wasn’t his dress-up doll and she hated feeling like someone else was trying to make her pretty or put her on display.

She knew it wasn’t like that, though. Natsu, for all his dragon tendencies, wanted to make her smile with his giving. She wasn’t his hoard – although wherever that was hidden away it did have a lot of similar jewellery to the sort she wore. She wished she could make more room for his love language and as such she let him go all out for birthdays and Christmas. She tried to meet his gusto when she could.

After four years of resigning gifts as a solely birthday affair, Natsu now had to figure out how to propose to her without touching the nerve that led straight to the ‘gift’ trigger portion of Lucy’s brain. He had even pulled in the big guns to help him plan the right approach.

“I don’t see how it’s the same thing as a gift. I think she’ll be fine with it, Natsu.” Levy was offering her insight, albeit unhelpfully so far.

They had gathered along with Gray, excluding the rest of their team because Erza had the tact of a pinwheel and would blow the operation in her next conversation with Lucy and the guilt of keeping a secret would eat away at Wendy from the inside out. The Exceeds had never really gotten the hang of human dating rituals. Case and point Happy understanding his finally winning Carla over as the result of his continued fish offerings.

“If it feels like the natural time for you both, I don’t see why you shouldn’t.” Levy continued as Natsu shook his head.

“What if it’s the right time for me but it isn’t for her? I don’t want to push her.”

“You don’t want it to be a repeat of Joe. That’s what you’re worried about.” Gray interjected. As much as they grated on each other, Gray was good at being his back up when Natsu truly needed it. It was a once in a blue moon occurrence but Natsu couldn’t help but be glad for his long-term nemesis right now.

Joe had been Lucy’s boyfriend prior to Natsu at 22 and things had gotten pretty serious. They had done all but move in together when Joe popped the question and it had sent Lucy running in the other direction. She had loved him and she had loved his family, but for whatever reason that Natsu hadn’t deciphered in the three years since then that he and Lucy had been dating, she hadn’t been ready to get married.

“It won’t be another Joe.” Levy spoke rather sternly. The script mage was convinced that just because he was Natsu and he was Lucy’s partner, that they were eternally bonded and Lucy wouldn’t dream of turning down his proposal. All he had to do, in her eyes, was gather the balls to ask.

“I’m not saying you shouldn’t be nervous.” Levy shifted her tone when she realised she was erring on the side of unsympathetic. “Of course you’re going to be nervous. She’s the love of your life.”

Gray made a nauseous face at that, earning a playful elbow from Natsu. “Maybe a ring isn’t the right move.” He added, trying to be at least somewhat helpful.

“Lucy’s never responded well to jewellery.” Natsu agreed, getting an immediate objection from Levy.

“She liked that last necklace you got her. She wears it all the time.”

“And she helped me find the ring I proposed to Juvia with.” Gray added.

Natsu gave it a hard thought. “Did she give any indication of whether she would want one? From me?”

“We didn’t talk about it. She was dating him at the time and it didn’t really seem relevant. She was always going to end up with you anyway.”

That seemed to calm him a little. His nerves were racing even through the planning stage but if everyone else saw what he had from way before the war with the Alvarez empire that maybe, just maybe, Lucy loved him as much as he did her.

Or very possibly it wasn’t about love and marriage just wasn’t something she wanted, in which case they would work around it.

Having given all the advice she could reasonably give, Levy called over her husband, currently arrested himself in the demand of two four year olds gripping onto his arms and dangling off the floor.

“Did Salamander decide whether he was gonna do it or not?” He asked, directing his question to his wife as if the other two weren’t sitting across from her.

“Yeah, I think I will.” Natsu replied. “It’s all I want right now and I want to at least have the conversation with her.”

“That’s the right spirit, Natsu.” Levy agreed.

Gajeel guffawed in his gravelly voice, the sharpest of his teeth showing in his amusement. “Make sure ya get a return receipt on that ring.”

Yeah, that didn’t help.

When the day finally came, Natsu had everything planned down to the minute. He had put more effort into this than anything else in his life – including the trials in which he had succeeded at gaining S-Class mage status.

He was intent on at least talking to Lucy about it even if she didn’t end up saying yes right there. The worst-case scenario was her doing the same thing she did to her ex and bolting after the smallest explanation she could muster. Only this time Natsu wasn’t an outsider to the guild and it would affect their whole social lives and work.

They had just finished a mission together when they were off on their date. Casual clothing – nothing that could tip her off or make it so big a deal that she would feel pressured. They’d gathered a few foods from her kitchen, put them in a basket so they would be easier to carry and set off for the park for an afternoon lunch.

“I love Jason but I sometimes wish he wasn’t so pushy with getting me to ask my friends if they will do shoots for him.” Natsu listened as Lucy described her recent run in with their favourite reporter. He and Lucy really were good friends from her time as a journalist with Sorcerer Weekly but since then Jason, feeling the pressure from his bosses to churn out more content of Fiore’s top guild, had been trying to use his connection with Lucy to influence Mira and the other Fairy Tail girls to model for him. While they were happy to, on occasion, the weekly permanent contracts that Jason was pushing for weren’t conducive to the busy life of a Fairy Tail Mage.

“What did he say when you asked him to stop?”

“He just got all sad.” Lucy shrugged. “I know it’s none of my responsibility and he’s not trying to make it so it is but I feel kind of bad.”

“Eh, it’s his job, and it sounds more like his bosses are screwing up.”

Her boyfriend, ever the blunt one. Lucy chuckled to herself. “It’s not like that in that world of work. He can’t just drop a client like us because he doesn’t like the way they speak. You can’t just change your bosses.”

“Sounds dumb.” He shook his head. It took a second for him to realise how dismissive he might have sounded. “I’m glad you came back with me instead of staying at that job.” He added softly.

“Me too.” She smiled at him.

They had known generally what area they would sit in when they entered the park. Picnics weren’t out of place for them and Lucy particularly loved sitting near the duck pond so they aimed for about there. They managed to find a nice shady spot that got enough of the Spring breeze but also the summer warmth that May was beginning to invite in.

Lucy waited for Natsu to finish spreading out the blanket before placing their items down and unpacking their basket. Some fruits, some sweeter snacks for later and Marmalade sandwiches, a quirk Lucy had brought with her from her hometown that, when she had introduced it to Natsu, it had become a firm favourite. Now, whenever they passed through Acalypha on the way back from a mission, she always made sure to pick up a fresh jar.

Natsu reached for the Tupperware of cakes, stopping himself just as his fingers met the rim of the plastic. He wanted to be on his best behaviour today and going for dessert first didn’t fall under that. Unless doing just that would tip her off. And surely he should act like his usual self today.

As if answering his question, his fingers were moved out the way by more dainty ones. He watched as Lucy removed the lid for him, taking a slice of Battenberg from the options and raising it to her lips, taking a big bite.

He watched almost in awe. Lucy never broke social etiquette, especially not around food. He was pretty sure such a thing went against her coding.

“Go on Natsu.” She smiled widely at her sputtering boyfriend. She brushed a few crumbs from the corner of her mouth where her unusual haste had spread some.

He didn’t need to be told twice. He took the plate she offered, filling his plate so full that the weight of the mini cakes and the structure of the plate made it look like a paper plate taco in his grip.

Eventually they got through the deserts and onto the sandwiches, Lucy admittedly feeling a little sickly after so much sugar. That was never a hazard for her partner. They had struck up in that time a conversation debating which of their guildmates would win a Ninja obstacle course – whatever one of those was.

The debate had reached the point where Natsu had stood up, waving his arms about, animatedly presenting his argument as to why Laxus could not win at the inflatable obstacle course section.

“He would blow up the course because of the static electricity or something. He couldn’t touch the thing without it exploding beneath him because his electricity would fuck everything up, right?”

“I thought magic was banned from this.” Lucy asked, taking another bite of a sandwich. “I think he would just run around, anyway.”

“No, that would be banned.”

“But the Exceeds flying isn’t?”

“Yeah, well, the floor is Lava or something, I don’t know.” He grinned, not deflated at all by her pragmatism. This was how their conversations usually went on dates like this. She would propose some stupid idea – the Guild Obstacle Course coming from her mind and not his– and Natsu would take it and run with it while she offered a more practical perspective on things.

He sat himself down beside her, arms outstretched on the grass as she leaned into his shoulder. “I think Erza would win.”

“Yeah, she would.” He agreed, more occupied with the feel of her hair against his cheek than expanding on their argument.

“Although.” Lucy began to add, popping her head up suddenly from their rest, “Sabertooth could give us a good run for our money.”

“But they’re not in the guild.”

“So, we’d open it up to other guilds. We could make a rival Grand Magic Games.”

“With no magic?”

“Oh, yeah.” She seemed to sink back into thinking. Before she could think up a new line of enquiry, Natsu thought it best to try and steer her onto a more affectionate type of conversation. Hopefully that would calm the thrumming in his chest that had taken route there the night before.

“Cana’s been talking about proposing to Abigail.” Smooth, dragon slayer. He chastised himself for showing his talent for bluntness.

Lucy smiled, though showing no suggestion that she had caught onto his internal anxiety. “I like Abi. I think she’s been really good for Cana and Cana’s been good for her.”

“The guild’s income has been suffering from it.”

“More alcohol for Macao’s lot, I guess.”

They shared a laugh. Opening his eyes, Natsu looked at her as she giggled. Her eyes were on the duck pond where a small cluster of the ducks of Magnolia South Gate Park were gathered, picking their lunch out of a soggy white bread loaf that some teenagers had chucked into the pond whole. Sometimes she smiled as if she was so entirely content with life. Ducks made her content, Wednesday evenings with him made her content, as did birthday parties and nights out with their friends. He hoped it didn’t mean there wasn’t room for more in their relationship. That maybe she was too content with her life as it was now for things to change.

The weight of the box in his pocket felt heavier as he watched, requiring a quick shake of the head to reset the feeling. He could only talk to her.

“Lucy.” Natsu spoke, thanking his voice for not giving out on him when it counted. She gave him her attention, smiling because there was no way she could see the anxiety bubbling inside his gut. At least that settled him a little. “If I proposed, what would you say? I already have the ring. I just need to know if that is something you would want.”

Lucy’s smile dropped into surprise. Her stare was stuck on his, and for a moment the cogs seemed to slow. But not into a stressed jutting, more into a peaceful, steady clicking.

Her smile bloomed.

“I would say yes.”

If she expected the conversation to end there, she didn’t stop him as he moved onto one knee. His hand tugged the box from the pocket of his trousers, presenting its black velvet exterior before effortlessly prizing it open. Her eyes widened as if she hadn’t realised that he had meant now, but she easily found herself settling into the pull of it.

“Lucy. You’re my best friend.” Natsu felt his cheeks ache with his broad grin. “I think you might be the best thing that ever happened to me and Happy. Even if you’re not always happy with us and we insult you sometimes. You let me take you on adventures and you make me feel comfortable because that is just what you do. You make everyone feel okay with being themselves around you. I think you’re so strong and kind and I love watching you practice your magic because you just care about your spirits, without anyone asking you to. I think it’s incredible. I love you and I want to marry you. Will you marry me?”

“Yes.” Lucy half-whispered. “Yes, I will.”

She met him on his knees, her hands clutching onto his shoulders as she kissed him over and over. “Can I put the ring on you?” He asked between pecks.

She nodded, leaning into his shoulder as he tugged the ring from its hold in the velvet. The kiss had made her breathless but the feel and sight of him slipping the ring on her left hand had the sort of butterflies she had only felt with him making her skin tingle. “Natsu, it’s beautiful.”

The ring itself was simple but vintage – not that he could spell the word – and had a round garnet set in the middle. He had chosen it by himself but at Levy’s instruction he had taken one of Lucy’s rings with him for the sizing. It was still loose by a small bit but they could get it resized no problem. Right now he was just happy it was a hit. “Gods, I would’ve been okay if you had just wanted to date instead of getting married but I’m so glad I won’t have to return the ring. The shop man was super weird.”

“Was it that shop just off the marketplace? Levy says that guy is super intense about green engagement rings and thinks everyone should have one.”

He chuckled, unaware that such a guy had existed. “No, I got it in Hargeon.”

“Oh,” She felt her blush blossom more.

“Shit, I love you.” He let out an exasperated sigh. “I was so worried you’d say no.”

“Why would I?” She had to take a second to think. “I sort of knew you were going to propose. I would have said something sooner if I didn’t want you to.”

“You knew?”

“I– yeah. I’ve been nervously rambling all afternoon. Could you not tell?” She laughed. An hour ago she was barely making it through a conversation without blurting whatever she could think about, work, and modelling and whatever. Natsu had never been one to ignore her when she felt like she was being boring but she wouldn’t have blamed him for a disinterested sound.

“Why were you nervous?” His brow had softened and he’d taken to stroking her fingers between his own wanting to listen.

“I didn’t want to accidentally ruin whatever you had planned. I don’t know, really. You can always sort of tell when a guy’s about to propose but you never know when it’ll happen.”

“Did you know with Joe?”

Lucy swallowed, nodding. “He sort of got happy whenever he was around me. And since I didn’t really want that with him I just ignored it until I couldn’t any longer.”

“But you do want this with me?”

“Yes.” She nodded harder. “I didn’t know it at the time but I broke things off with him because of you. I think you’ve always been in my heart even if it took me a while to realise it.” She didn’t let him speak. “I love you and I want this with you, more than anything.”

Natsu kissed her again, hands pressed to her cheeks to pull her in and she smiled into it. His fingers tangled into her hair and he sighed, finally content. He had everything he wanted right here and he could spend his lifetime making her happy.

Oh yeah. I mainly tend to reread my own fanfics but there are some that I go back to like ALL the time. There's one fic for the CSI: Miami fandom that I've visited like...120 times? I mean, there are like 22 chapters so like, majority of the visits comes from like reading each chapter but like...still

42. How do you get over writer's block?

Ah, now this a good question...the only time I ever really had "writer's block" was when I was in a really bad mental headspace. And what I did then was I had gone home to see my family then for like a short vacation (I also had a job interview back home so it like kinda worked out) but I basically like just unplugged/relaxed/spent time with family (and we had all gotten covid at the time so we REALLY spent time together). But yeah, just unplug, go for a walk, get some sun, eat something, hug a friend/family member...just do not think about your work/fic. And I know that's gonna be hard because it's going to be like a looming, negative nagging shadow in the back of your mind, but you gotta beat it off with a stick and just let yourself relax.

Because with me, when I was fighting with my fic Monster Like Me, I basically worked on it for SO LONG and put so much pressure on myself for the fic to be GOOD that I basically sabotaged myself (and ended up deleting the outline/draft to give myself a completely new slate). Sometimes you gotta just step away and breathe.

But also, there's this thing I've seen going around tumblr that's like "if you have writer/art block for longer than a certain period of time, you should probably see a doctor because you're depressed" so like...yeah. If writer's block persists longer than normal for you (if you ever get writer's/art block)...maybe go see a professional if you can't get excited about your work. Or go read someone else's work. Maybe that'll bounce you back. Either way, taking a step back from your own work and letting yourself breathe and think will do a lot better than you sitting and staring at your screen forcing your story to work. Force never works with fics. Ever. I've learned the hard way. If they don't wanna work, they won't.

Okay emotional post ahead.

I cannot express how much every bit of love and support you guys give me means to me. In my personal life right now I’m dealing with the short end of the stick, I just recently got some devastating medical news, but then I’ll get a comment that someone just loves some silly thing I wrote and my day is so much brighter. I write for therapy reasons and a lot of what the characters deal with is what I’m dealing with and I write it that way to cope. I’m proud of myself already for what I write but then you all like it too??? It sends me to the moon!!! I hope you know that every kind comment either here or on AO3 gets screenshot-ed and sent to my best friends because I’m giddy with excitement and they just love seeing it. I LOVE Y’ALL SO MUCH 💕💕💕💕

first of all i have to say i LOVE that you send these questions every year. i was literally thinking about it a few days ago and hoping you would still send them even tho i've been pretty mia and (at least from what i've seen) the fandom's gone a bit quiet around here 💕

on to the questions:

something i've learned in the past year is just...timing is everything. and things come to you when they're supposed to. i got a new-ish job this year—same company, different department—and it's something that i've wanted to do for years. i've even tried to go for it before, but it just never worked out for whatever reason. but then towards the middle to end of last year, it opened up again, so of course i tried for it again but AGAIN it didn't work out. at the time it was like.....i understood why they decided to go the direction they did but i also knew that i would've been fucking good at it and more than any other time before, it really just felt like the timing of it was right for me. it just felt like that's what i supposed to be doing and the fact that it didn't work out again left me very confused about what was supposed to come next for me. but then a few months later, the person that was promoted to that position decided it wasn't working out and........now here i am. i love what i do, i'm good at it, and it's something that i neverrrrr could have imagined for myself a year ago.

something i regret is probably just certain situations that have happened in my family over the past year that maybe weren't handled the best. you know how it is when there are a lot of personalities and it's hard to know how to best handle a situation. do you talk about it or do you just let it go? i think there were a couple things that either weren't talked about and probably should have been or were talked about and became more of an issue than they needed to be so. probably that 😭

someone i wish someone had told me, of course i'm going to repeat myself like i have for years now and say you don't have to have it all figured out because even tho certain parts of my life have started working themselves out, there's still a lottttt i don't have figured out at all. but i'm also going to say—going back to the first question—being in the right place at the right time is SO important. trusting your gut, not giving up hope, continuing to put yourself out there.....all of that has been really REALLY important and impactful for me this past year.

i don't know for sure that the job i have now is my forever job, but one of my favorite things about it is that it allows me to combine creativity AND technicality, and so what i DO know is that whatever i end up doing 'when i grow up'....i want it to be like that

So... I want to explain something first to explain something second, lmao.

FIRST::

I've had an ear to kpop since about 2008, part of a fandom I will not name but your hint is they are famous for how overwhelmingly toxic they are.

Fell in love with the Korean language and dramas, actually lived in Korea in college and Seoul is the most beautiful city on the planet (I lived in Wonju which isn't bad, but isn't as amazing as Seoul).

And then the group that I had been following entered their... how to say... image-destruction-phase. It was like they were addicted to saying shit that exposed how rude and arrogant they were IRL, one guy just let his homophobia hang out there for the whole world to see and waved it around proudly.

Amidst all of that (the homophobic one actually came out as homophobic a week after this, so it hadn't happend yet but it was the nail in the coffin) I had somehow become a fandom leader against my will, known for being able to play CSI: Fandom (because of an emotionally unstable former friend I had to keep talking off ledges by getting to the root of scandal rumors). It was exhausting and people were fucking stupid. My stance on idols is they’re grown ass adults (mostly). Who the fuck gives a shit if they’re dating someone or whatever? Honestly I was so sick of the bullshit.

Anyways

A former member of the group released a solo album and it just... wasn't my taste at all. I didn't say anything against it by any means, but someone sent me an ask saying they'd noticed I wasn't reblogging.

I said ONLY "It's just not my genre, but I wish him luck" and within 15 minutes I had 12 messages either threatening my life or telling me to kill myself. Because of those words.

That was when I was like "You know what, fuck all of this" and bailed. That was around 2012-ish. I refused to go anywhere near kpop with a 10 foot stick after that. If I saw news, it was because it hit CNN or BBC (so the tragic deaths and the Burning Sun Scandal which was just INSANE, like, omg). But that was it. And btw I still dont' listen to that group I used to listen to. I fully will not touch their stuff.

SECOND:

So that was a big ass mountain blocking me from being willing to even consider kpop. But a dear friend of mine was very much into it and just like once in a blue moon I'd notice a post on my dash that was kpop from her, but I ignored it.

In mid-2020, a fuck ton of bad shit went down even on top of all the COVID stuff. Like, at one point I genuinely considered driving into a wall (except I was buried alive under responsibilities) and it just got incredibly hard and incredibly dark. My personality- I can't ask for help. I just can't. IDK why, it's a huge block for me.

So that friend, my darling Sarah, who reblogged kpop stuff I rarely saw, a GIFset came across my dash that I was just so exhausted and defeated I didn't even have the energy to scroll past and decided to read it. It was Seventeen in that group blitz episode of Going Seventeen where they hit the inflatable obstacle course.

And it made my heart feel not quite as heavy for a few seconds. Maybe I even cracked half a smile.

I kept dragging myself on, and I saw the GIFset again and in another defeated day, I looked it up on Youtube (had to play it at 70% speed, those psychos talk FAST) and watched it.

And... it made me genuinely smile.

So I watched all of Going Seventeen over the next several months. Then about 6 months in I decided to listen to one of their songs (Hoshi- Spider) and loved it. Started listening to more of their music, found out Carat are actually extremely chill and extremely dorky, the opposite of the fan club I'd been part of before.

So I joined Carat formally (i'd never done that with the Fandom That Must Not Be Named, Carat is my first fanclub :) ) and I just... enjoy them.

They got me through some really incredibly dark times, just being able to watch something lighthearted and simple and funny. Like, I know it’s cliche to say, I know they'll never know that, they probably wouldn't give a shit, they probably hear it 150,000 times a day. It doesn't matter. The dumbassery helped me a lot, and I'm grateful for that.

And this year I got to go see them live in concert with my darling Sarah, the same week I got the news that my mother's cancer (which we were told was terminal) was in full remission and she's one of only a few cases her doctors have ever SEEN to go into remission, and just...

That was way more info than you were asking for, but that's it. Their dorky, probably-licks-bus-windows charm was just simple and yet funny enough that it helped me breathe when that felt impossible, and so I like them :)

Wade gets kidnapped and tortured and Jake saves him uwu

Then not paired with that series but still Deadpool/Moon Knight

ALSO!!!!! I’m stuck thinking about Wade getting blown up and having to regrow his body but Spider-Man is like “nah I can’t babysit you this week but I got a friend to help!” And that friend is Moon Knight (cuz why not)!!! Basically on occasion Wade’s body doesn’t grew things back correctly all the time. 👉👈 I’ve been trying to write it as a daddy kink thing as a joke since White Box keeps making daddy jokes in my other fics but I can’t do it. I’m taking too much physic damage. Imma keep trying but worse case, I will scrap the daddy bs sub plot line. This will either be a one-shot OR a mini series one-shot with how Marc, Steven, AND Jake “learning” about Wade’s new private bits LOL This isn’t a fetish thing, I’m literally trans. I could just make Wade trans for the story but where is the fun in that? I need more people to realize Deadpool/Moon Knight is such a great chaotic pairing. But I will do my best to fill the space until better writers come along. Or someone please help give me ideas.

I have a bunch of ideas. I normally don’t like writing fandom favorite pairings cause idk but when I do, I cater to myself more. Which means Peter is gonna be trans cause I’m trans LOLOL Also Peter will be 30 in every fic

Peter gets ghosted and cheated on and is big sad, Wade is a bro and is like “date me lol” and Peter is like “eh sure but I want a normal out of suit dating experience” and then they go on a date to all my favorite places as I cry as a single person

Peter gets a horrible head injury and is suffering from memory loss BUT THERES A PLOT TWIST

Peter retires as Spidey and moves far away and essentially becomes a travel blogger for some big company that is doing a multi-dimensional vacations idk in his universe there is no Deadpool and DP saves him a bunch of times cause Peter can’t use his powers cause that universe does have a Spider-Man

Isekai trope but make it Spider-Man???? (there’s a pattern, I really like multiverse stuff and I also don’t think 616 Spidey deserves Wade lol)

Wade finds an onlyfans for a spider-man cosplayer and it sounds a bit too close to the real spidey. Basically keeps shoving money at the guy to be his sugar daddy and Peter doesn’t really know it’s Wade. Spider-Man and Deadpool are best friends, DP still has his huge crush on Spidey but respects the fact that Spider-Man is not interested.

I’ve organized it by fandom, starting with the oldest fandoms I’ve read (unfortunately, Harry Potter is the oldest). Each fic has a short description by me, a rating, and link. Will also be pinning this/updating it in the future. Hope y’all have fun looking at all the fics!:

Harry Potter: The Firebird Trilogy, Book 1, Book 2, & Book 3 by Darth Marrs (FFN): A serious, mature AU of Harry Potter that is vastly different from the canon we know. Harry/Harem. 10/10, fandom-defining story that will make you cry. Harry Potter and the Four Founders by Darth Marrs (FFN): Harry is the heir of the four founders. Harry/Harem, 9/10. (The rest of the stories in the series are also good, but imo they do not compare to the original, so there’s that.) Genius Fratris by a lonelysock (FFN, but is also on AO3): A WBWL story where Harry is older than in canon. No bashing of the Potters, with realistic depictions of family life and how being older affects Harry’s personality and willingness to fight Voldemort. Still currently a WIP. 9/10. Blood and Chocolate by Lady Lemon Drop (FFN): Harry finds out he is becoming a vampire at the end of OotP. Some changes are made to canon, like Sirius surviving, the timeline is a little wonky...and it’s abandoned. But, it’s a Harry/Ginny story I give a 9/10. Vanteeria Domestica by andrea_readwolf (AO3): A creature!Harry AU meets a Harry/Harem!AU, with beautiful relationship dynamics that do a good job at reflecting how complex it is to be in a poly relationship. Harry/Harem, 9/10. Forget-Me-Not by Lomonaaeren (FFN, but is also on AO3): Dumbledore accidentally casts a forgetfulness spell a little too powerful on Harry, leading to him basically being ignored by everyone. Harry/Theodore Nott, 9/10. The Commoner Queen by Pilargirl (FFN): A royalty AU where Harry is the prince of magical Britain and Ginny Weasley has caught his eye. Harry/Ginny, 9/10. The Bonds of Blood by Darth Marrs (FFN): A Harry/Ginny soulbond story that takes a serious look at what a soulbond would really look like between two children. Harry/Ginny. 8/10.

PJO: From Amidst the Darkness and At the End of the Tunnel by Mrs.PercyJackson3 (FFN): A mortal AU where Poseidon only finds out about Percy after a car crash kills Sally and leaves Percy blind. 10/10 the traces of life with you by shadowtraveled (AO3): God!Percy falls in love with Luke, four times over. Lukercy, 10/10, ship-defining story. Maybe I was sent to bring you home by percy in panties (AO3): Another Lukercy, ship-defining story featuring reincarnation, 10/10. The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea by midnightinjapan (FFN): Nico’s social-avoidance tendencies come back to haunt him. Percy/Nico, 9/10.

Twilight: The Movement of the Earth and The Fire of the Sun by audreyii-fic (FFN): In which Jacob imprints on Bella in New Moon. 10/10, this is a fandom-defining duology and should be read by everyone if they’re a fan of Twilight. All the Ways You Know Me by FlamingMaple (FFN): Jacob and Bella get together in New Moon, except Jacob is killed by Victoria and Bella is left to raise their baby, who she is still pregnant with. Enter Edward back onto the scene. Edward/Bella, 9/10.

Teen Wolf: To Accidentally Be by mylegsaremine (AO3): Scott and Isaac get together...except, neither of them have been told that beta, male werewolves can get pregnant, and they haven’t exactly been practicing safe sex. Like, at all. Mpreg ensues. 10/10, was one of the first fics I read for this fandom. A Pox on Hope by spqr (AO3): Fem!Stiles gets bitten by a vampire while trying to investigate a case and decides to call up Peter to help. Peter/Stiles, 10/10. Keep It Together by ravingrevolution (AO3): Stiles needs the Pack’s help after someone steals something from him. Derek/Stiles, 9/10. a collapsing star with tunnel vision by CerinityKS (AO3): Theo is dying...and has feelings for Scott. Naturally, this means he isn’t going to tell Scott either of those things. Sceo, 8/10. Calling a Spade a Spade by RhysLahey (AO3): Isaac comes back to Beacon Hills. The Princess Bride references ensue. Scisaac, 8/10.

Star Trek (AOS): Strange Courage by Joules Mer (AO3): A Bones/Kirk AU series that begins post-ST:ID, then involves into something more. Does have mpreg in it, but not in the way you’d usually expect. 10/10. the sum of a man by phalangine (AO3): Kirk is ordered to get married by the brass, so he does...to Bones. The marriage isn’t real, until it is. 10/10, had me rolling in bed laughing when I first read it. Warning Labels (are meant to be ignored) and Find Me in the Ashes by drmcbones (AO3): A Bones/Kirk soulmate AU where neither of them really want to have a soulmate, yet find out they are each other’s anyways. Extremely good, 9/10. Fly Me to the Moon by Horolojium (AO3): Bones tries to deny his feelings for Kirk while the standard shenanigans occur on the Enterprise, with interesting effects. Bones/Kirk. 9/10.

MCU: The Third Option by Uncertainty_Principle (AO3): Ben and May get divorced before Peter’s parents die, leading to Peter going into foster care after Ben dies with...not so great results. Irondad/spiderson. 10/10, one of my favorites of all time. Pretty Maids Universe by Finny3120 (AO3): A bio irondad/spiderson AU where Tony is siblings with May and raises Peter...and also falls in love with Steve. The portrayals of grief, slow burn, and etc. are some of the best I have ever seen in fanfiction, 10/10, another favorite of all time. built from scraps by peterstank (AO3): Peter survives the Snap instead of Tony, then finds out that Tony is his biological father. Bio irondad/spiderson, enough feels to make even veteran readers of fanfiction cry. 9/10 Silent Screams and Surprising Saviors by normalisoverrated (AO3): A fem!Penny becomes selectively mute after meeting Skip as a kid, but is able to speak as Spider-Woman. Unfortunately/fortunately for her, it does not take long for the Avengers to connect the dots between the two anyways after she gets an internship at Stark Industries. Irondad/spiderdaughter. 9/10 Intern Spider by Emily_F6 (AO3): A fem!Penny becomes an intern at Stark Industries, while still trying to keep her identity as Spidergirl a secret. Irondad/spiderdaughter. 9/10 Revelations by Anonymous (AO3): An Infinity War AU where Thanos doesn’t Snap and everyone survives, leading to Peter and Tony circling around each other in a slow burn. Starker. 10/10

X-Men Movies: The Way Back by Baamon5evr (AO3): A post-First Class AU where Charles finds out he’s pregnant with Erik’s child after the Beach Divorce. And, as the title suggests, follows the events leading to him and Erik getting back together again. Cherik, 9/10, read it in like 4 hours because it was just that good! An Earlier Heaven by Regann (AO3): Another post-First Class mpreg Cherik AU, except in this one Charles becomes pregnant with Jean. A very sweet story, and since it was written before DoFP nobody dies! 9/10, very very good!

1. When are you usually online?

I’m usually online during evenings and/or afternoons most active during either the late afternoon, evening or late at night my time. This does cause me to miss most activity & squeeze hours from later hours bc smh why do most ppl I write with have to be from States -

2. What verses are you involved in outside of this page?

My multimuse side blog (with the url @multiplelivesinline). It’s multi-fandom even though Pokemon seems to dominate there atm, if I decide to write or test any other muse than Naoto I’m likely to add them instead of another single muse blog. Side blogs have their own small headaches but they’re easy enough to deal w/ for now since it’s mostly followed by people who are mutuals with me or specific fandom folks (Pkmn RPC).

3. What is your biggest RP pet peeve?

Not reading people’s rules before they’re following or lurking. This especially goes for personal blogs, with whom I’ve had several headache inducing situations. One other pet peeve I have is not having backbone to say that your muse isn’t always canon or that you have a ship bias: if your muse is bi/straight even though canon says otherwise don’t claim that they’re canon compliant. People will only feel lied to when they find out later that your muse is closer to a hc-based and that can lead to bad outcomes.

4. Are you drawn to specific types of muses?

Either calm, cool and collected muses who are using their first impression as a facade of sorts or muses who care too much on what others think or try to be the Hero Who Can Save Everyone. My gender bias seems to be on ladies even though one of my biased muses is Gladion from Sun/Moon, the edgelord brooding side cast whose backstory is sth what shook me at first but gave me reasons to care on him. 5. Are there recurring themes in your writing that people might not notice?

The theme of how there can be darkness and failure in your life but it’ll always pass due time and how there’s small momemts of joy in life. It’s how I tend to see hurt/comfort or angst used for the best end goals and my personal mantra in life. Time heals all wounds, even though it might take months never give in or think that it’s worthless to even try. There is always a way and people to help you along the way, depressive shit or moments of desperation will exist but you will always survive through.

6. What are your favorite RP trends?

Slice of life stuff what is focused on small joys of life in middle of a greater storyline, character dynamics studies and how they fluctuate + the trend of opposites attract. In Naoto’s case it’s the concept of her personal growth during P4 and after it & how she’s not the most extrovert type piques my interest. and the gradual realization on why media Hell is a bad place to end up in. She hates that part of her career the most.

The character dynamic is something I noticed later on the AUs what have a Naoto who isn’t too opposed to chaotic behavior/her temperament or ego taking over her rationality more. It’s thrilling to write the contrast what works fluently without any big hassle: Especially Michiru (1/4 angel!AU) has been a clear sign on how her type is an extrovertish person who can do things you wouldn’t assume from them or an anomaly.

7. What is your process for starting a new story with someone?

A starter call and/or plotting calls continued with Tumblr IMs are an easiest entryway for starting a thread I want to plot. Another option is for me to send an ask and approaching you in IMs if I get an idea I 100 % want to do. I don’t personally do open RP posts and want clear plans so neither party will have an unpleasant experience.

8. How do you feel about duplicates?

Duplicates are cool, and a neat thing to exist. I’m not chasing them away w/ a pitchfork. I can’t ofc assume that my girl will 100 % vibe with them automatically but if that happens assume me to throw an idea for a sibling/twin AU or multiverse interactions at some point. (Also if you get any ideas you’re welcome to go to IMs to plot around that & talk OOC stuff, I’m not the most outward person ever to exist & am likely to say hi back.)

9. How long have you been involved in roleplaying?

For about 5 and half years. I started this as an extension of my already existing writing hobby for own stories with OCs when my online friend enabled me to go for it and discovered pretty quickly that even though my Naoto was crappy at first I really enjoyed this & wanted to continue even though I had a rough patch at first.

10. Is there a muse or verse you wish you could write in, but haven’t?

I’ve had the small interest to try writing Atsuro Kihara from DeSu for some time, probably the only thing stopping me is the lack of energy to sink hours to a JRPG to see if I have enough inspiration for that. The other character who I have memed on is writing Kanji or Yumi from P4. If I write Yumi though, I am deleting the forced romance BS. No forced romance paths, we delete their existence like based people who want fluent romances.

My Review of Guardians of Dawn: Zhara by S.Jae-Jones

Hello, it is once again, I. I know it’s been a minute since I’ve written a review but I’m back with a book that I’m not seeing a huge fandom for on here despite the fact I had to wait over a month for it to come off hold in library, so I’m going to need you all to start talking about it. Is this book a little over a month old and just picking up traction, yes, but I need someone to scream about this with me so you all get to get hear me.

In Guardians of Dawn: Zhara, we are introduced to our titular character Jin Zhara (btw this story is based on various Asian cultures and mythology, so the last name goes first), a poor orphaned girl who lives with stepmother and blind stepsister in Zanhei, one of the Morning Realms under the control of an emperor from the north who took over the area when Zhara was a child. The emperor banned the use of magic since it caused the magicians and emperor to turn into abominations over time and had all magicians, including Zhara’s father, killed. Zhara, surprise, is a magician who has to live in hiding since as soon as a magician is discovered they are immediately put to death. All she wants in life is to be able to keep her powers under control, keep her blind sister safe, and pay off her family’s debts but that all changes when she meets a mysterious boy who could possibly lead her to the Guardians of Dawn, and underground magical organization with revolutionary tendencies.

The book is meant to be based off both Cinder by Marissa Meyer and Sailor Moon so there are elements of the Cinderella fairytale woven in through the story along with characters from various Asian mythologies which I think created a very interesting world though a bit confusing to understand at times. This also might be because I’m not familiar with any Asian mythology and only vaguely understand how east Asian monarchies worked, but there were elements of the world that took me a while to grasp. There are of course the beginning elements of a Sailor Moon-esque story since it looks like each book in the series is going to focus on a different girl and a different fairytale, but I think this story more similar to the old JetX show and comic series, W.I.T.C.H., which I was in love with as a kid and never finished the comics (whoops), but I made a post about it explaining the resemblance a little more. Honestly, I think it’s a very solid basis for a story and I’m excited to see how the author is able to build out the world more in the next book when we meet a new character.

While the plot of the book was very interesting, the characters, I felt, were a little lacking. I can’t put my finger quite on exactly why but there were some instances where I felt like the characters’ pre-established personalities were either being disregarded or leaned on too heavily. For example, we have timid Zhara suddenly cracking sexual jokes to Han despite literally every other page she hasn’t shown signs of having that sense of humor. I think the author was trying to have a female protagonist who was timid and weak but also not too weak because “girl power”, and I’m saying this as a feminist, you can be a little bitch and also girl boss (case and point: me). I personally think we have too many stereotypically strong female protagonists, having this girl who is shy and weak and unable to use her magic would’ve been a nice change of pace and having Zhara learn to find her own strength over the course of the book would’ve been a nice addition.

Speaking of, there were parts of the story that just moved too fast. Without giving any spoilers, we go from Zhara not being able to control her magic to just somehow doing it on command, because reasons, and it’s never explained. Or how the last chapter of the book manages to condense six weeks down into two pages, which I will talk about a bit more in the spoiler section, but I honestly didn’t appreciate it.

Though I will say, overall, I did enjoy the book and I’m excited to see how the rest of the series goes, it’s quite unfortunate that I found out about it the week it came out so now I have to wait an entire year for the next installment. Overall, I’d give it for the girls who were into shows involving a group of girl heroes from the 90s and 00s out of ten and I recommend it if you were a fan of that genre of TV when you were a kid.

I honestly don’t even know where to start, because there is a lot. I’m just going to do a rapid fire of minor annoyances to get the ball rolling. First of all, I think that the author focused too heavily on inside references within the world, I get that having them made the world more interesting but there was a point where I was like, “cool, can we be done now?”. For example, the Bangtan Brothers, so obviously a reference to the author’s love for BTS, which was a cute and fun reference at first, but it just kept going. And them turning out to be magicians helping the Guardians to me was too far, it felt like when a joke loses its funniness the more you repeat it. Same with the constant references to “A Maiden Who Was Loved by Death”, cool, I get it started Zhara and Han’s whole relationship, but it was inserted into every conversation, and I was over it. Also, the bookseller, Master Cao, being a traitor was very out of left field and the only hint we got was Zhara hearing a familiar voice one time in an out of context conversation with her stepmother, when literally up until his big reveal he didn’t do anything shady. And I get that he was good at being secretive or whatever, but it just felt a little weird.

Going back to the timing thing from the end of the book that I mentioned earlier, I was very annoyed with how the ending was so rushed. I get Zhara was in a coma, or equivalent, and was knocked out for two weeks but I mean give us time to process that Lord Chan was executed and then magic was made legal. Literally both of those things got like a sentence despite being monumental plot points, how is magic that was illegal because the emperor who controls the land suddenly is legal in one part of the empire suddenly and everyone is chill with it. And then they open a magic school for the region, and everyone immediately trusts it? I think this is something that should’ve been fleshed out a little more because, what?!

And not to be a negative Norman about this whole thing, and though it doesn’t seem like it, I did genuinely enjoy the book. If this isn’t your first time seeing my blog then you’ll know I’ve been on a bit of a “fantasy books that are based on Asian mythology” kick of late, well as of this year, so this was definitely up my alley. The author combined various cultures and mythologies from across east Asia to create this complex world that was very interesting to read about and I’m more excited to explore it with the next books. I’m also a sucker for those superpower girl shows, I watched most of Sailor Moon when I was in high school (I still need to finish it, adding that to the to-do list) and my aforementioned love of W.I.T.C.H. that I also never finished, I’m really glad this genre is coming back into vogue. And I think we need more of the genre, give me more of these types of books please @/the universe! I’m also especially excited to see how the Guardians will work together as a team and how they’ll be able to combine their powers. I honestly wish we could’ve seen more of Zhara and Yulana working together and using their powers together but alas, we cannot always get what we want.

Side note, I’m going to need someone who has a better grasp on Asian spirituality to explain to me the element of wood, I get it’s supposed to be like what we would consider earth, but like is it just for trees or the earth as a whole, someone help.

I think the most upsetting thing about this book for me was that I’m going to have to wait a full year for the next one to come out, curse me and my ability to have found the book quite literally around the week it was published. There are so many possibilities for the rest of the series which I’m super excited about, I know the next book is going to be inspired by Beauty and the Beast, but the possibilities for the other two Guardians are endless. If you’ve read this book, please come scream about it in my inbox or just on tumblr as a whole because there is barely any content to consume and it’s upsetting to me.

I'm mad the Comic Jumper: The Adventures Of Captain Smiley is such a obscure game it's got that Earthworm Jim with Adult Swim feel to it.

I like the main character with his star partner with their different personalities.

But this game is stuck on the Xbox 360. I finally watched Rebeltaxi/Panpizza's new video and most of those games were creative but seemed to be released at the wrong time.

I know if this game came out nowadays it probably would have been a thing.

Gained a new crush though.

This game gives me Cuphead vibes too with the character shooting at stuff then the battle changes.

Also each level has it's own theme which is cool.

Also are Captain Smiley and the Star brothers?

Also the Star is a Brad simp.

This game is giving me Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo, Gemusetto, and Oishi high school battle vibes.

I love manga Captain Smiley though but I wish he got a anime transformation parody like sailor moon.

Sequel Idea

If Comic Jumper: The Adventures of Captain Smiley ever got a sequel I would love it to have either Captain Smiley and Star arguing then the next day Star goes missing on Captain Smiley's chest.

This causes the comic to fail again that Captain Smiley has to do the odd comic jobs again while also trying to find his star shaped partner.

And the person who painstaking removed Star off of Captain Smiley.

Also give Star a body and make him fight Captain Smiley in a fight.

Also have both of them talk it out on whether or not Star wants to become his own hero or just be the sidekick stuck on the hero.

Also give Star his Brad simping moment with his new body.

Everytime Captain Smiley tells a joke a cricket sound effect would play and he would say "Oh yeah Star isn't here."

Then he would move on without telling many joke since he has no one to bounce jokes on with besides Gerda and she would be making fun of him the entire game.

I want Captain Smiley to Comic Jump go into graphic novels, webcomics, fan comics with okay art styles, and old school cartoon comics.

And comic jump into a shonen manga similar to either have the same energy as Bobobo-bo bo-bobo, Jojo's bizarre adventure, or Yuyu Hakusho in feel.

Like imagine Captain Smiley entering in the beach episode of a manga.

Similar to the beach episode in Bobobo.

A old school cartoon and humanization of Captain Smiley would be awesome.

I imagine Captain Smiley being a weaker version of himself without Star.

He's not as strong and as witty without Star since he keeps Smiley in check while also joking with him.

PART TWO

PAIRING — Steven Grant x fem!Reader

SUMMARY — You’re still seeing your ex-boyfriend every day but that has to stop because of the new man you’ve met. However, Steven needs your help once again and you just can’t say no.

AUTHOR’S NOTE — This is my first fic written for “Moon Knight” and a first fic in a long while that was written for a fandom that was not mob/mafia related. 🙈 However, I hope it’s not the last one. 😂

DEFINITION OF A RED FLAG (I)

You placed a plate full of soup in front of Steven and crossed your arms before leaning on the counter to watch him carefully.

“Thank you,” he cracked a smile and grabbed a spoon to start eating.

“Your favourite,” you reminded him and he nodded. “Is everything alright?” you sighed and sat by the kitchen table next to him.

The dark circles under his eyes were worrying you but it was not the main reason for your question. The main reason was guilt you had been feeling.

You knew you shouldn’t feel that way at all. In fact, Steven was your ex-boyfriend and you had absolutely no obligations towards him. You didn’t have to babysit him or act like his mother. You absolutely didn’t have to cook dinners for two instead of one and you didn’t have to do his laundry. He never wanted that from you either… So now it was your right to move on.

But when he looked up to meet your gaze and you saw those big brown eyes… Your heart squeezed in your chest.

Some part of you would always love him but life with Steven was simply not right. He was not mature enough to be in a relationship, you assumed, because how else would you explain him forgetting about your dates and then saying he had messed up the calendar again? How else would you explain him being against you spending too much time at his place? Or coming up with strange theories about the time he had lost and his weird dreams…?

Steven was harmless in his oddness but being his girlfriend was… rather exhausting and frustrating.

“Yeah, I’m fine,” he answered and you nodded although you knew very well that it was a lie.

“Have you fed Gus today?” you asked.

“Yes.”

“Been late to work?”

“Only five minutes,” he smiled proudly and you gave him a soft chuckle.

“Steven, I have to talk to you,” you finally took a deep breath in and he froze a bit. Your tone and posture meant nothing good.

“What is it, (Y/N)?”

“We have to stop… Doing this, I mean,” your voice cracked a bit while saying that. There were no right words to explain you would leave a man like Steven alone.

He had his mother, yes, but you had a feeling that she actually wasn’t giving shit about him either. You had never witnessed her calling him back and answering to all his voice mails although he claimed otherwise.

“I understand,” Steven swallowed thickly and looked down, mingling in the soup with his spoon.

“It’s that… I’m seeing someone,” you confessed and he looked up again. He wasn’t angry, no. Steven would never get angry. He was more concerned and worried. “It’s nothing serious yet but it might be… And having my ex coming over every day for dinner and doing his laundry… That's like the definition of a red flag, isn’t it?”

“Yeah, totally,” he tried to chuckle nervously.

“I think, after a while, maybe he’s going to understand we are friends and you will be able to come and visit me again but until then… I just don’t want to scare him off,” you explained.

“Is he a good guy?” Steven asked. “Will he treat you well?” He lowered his gaze once again.

“Yeah, I think so,” you nodded with a sad smile and extended your hand to squeeze his. “Steven, look at me.”

He looked up and you wished this moment would last forever. Just you and him by the kitchen table, squeezing each other's hands and looking at each other. But reality was much more complicated…

“If you ever need my help with something… If you’re ever in trouble… You can come to me,” you promised. “You hear me?”

“Yes, (Y/N),” he nodded but you knew very well Steven would never want to be your burden.

You didn’t expect him to come to you again.

Two weeks later you found yourself preparing for a dinner date with your new soon-to-be-boyfriend. His name was James and he was a security guard of the place you worked at.

Steven hadn’t been contacting you since the other day and you were trying your best to stop him from occupying your thoughts, which was rather difficult. Somehow, everything was reminding you of him.

You were busy putting earrings on when someone knocked upon the door. You furrowed your brows and went to the hall to check on the unexpected visitor.

When you opened the door, you saw… Steven.

He looked awful. His hair was ruffled, dark circles underneath his eyes were bigger than ever and he was clutching on a notebook, keys with a keychain and a mobile phone.

“I’m sorry, I…” he started nervously and then he froze after realising you were totally preparing to go out somewhere. “Oh my God, you look beautiful,” he swallowed thickly.

“Thank you, Steven. What do you want, though? I’m going out in fifteen minutes on a date with James,” you told him but you let him enter your flat by taking a step back and closing the door behind him.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t want to but… You said I could come if I were in trouble, right, so here I am because I think this is huge,” he looked at you with widened eyes.

“What is?” you sighed. It sounded like another one of his weird conspiracy theories and you were kind of sick of it, especially now when you were supposed to go out.

“There’s a man… A man named Marc Spector and I think he’s stealing my identity. Look,” he placed all the things on your table and you took a deep breath in to calm your nerves.

“Steven, love, have you considered seeing a therapist like I suggested?” you asked carefully.

“It’s not… I…” he turned around to look at you. “(Y/N), it’s serious. I know it sounds absolutely bonkers but it’s true…!”

The sound of your phone buzzing and ringing interrupted you. It was James.

“Now, don’t even make a sound,” you pointed a finger at Steven and picked up the phone. “Hello?”

“Hi, (Y/N). I’m calling to tell you I’m going to pick you up in about ten minutes, yeah?” James asked.

You swallowed thickly and kept staring at Steven. He was giving you puppy eyes and he looked like he had been through a few major breakdowns lately… at least a few.

You knew that he didn’t have anyone else to come to either.

“James, I’m sorry but… I was just about to call you… I can’t meet you today,” your voice cracked and there was a silence on the other side. “It’s an urgent matter… Family thing… I’m so sorry but my… My cousin needs me,” you made up a lie quickly.

“Oh, I see, well, I’m sorry. Is everything alright?” James asked, concerned.

“I hope so.”

“Do you need help with anything?”

“No, it’s fine,” you shook your head. “I will call you later, okay? I’m really sorry.”

“It’s alright, not your fault. I hope everything will be fine,” he answered and you disconnected the line.

“Cousin, huh?” Steven raised an eyebrow at you.

“Don’t,” you threw the phone on a couch and gave him a threatening look. “I’ve already lied to him. It’s not a good sign for the future of my relationship, is it?”

“Not really,” Steven shrugged his arms and you squinted your eyes at this gesture.

“Nevermind,” you shrugged your arms, too. It was almost relieving to think you were supposed to spend an evening with Steven instead of James – and you actually had an excuse to do that. “So, what were you saying? Some guy named Marc?”

“Marc Spector,” Steven nodded and handed you a mobile phone. “There’s some woman’s number here. I called her and she yelled at me. I don’t understand.”

“Wait, darling, I’m sure you just didn’t approach the matter properly,” you smiled gently and found the number saved as LAYLA. You were quite convinced that he was only having one of his panic attacks and your job was to prove to him that his suspicions about that man – Marc Spector – were not real. “Let me call her, alright?” you proposed.

“Yes, please,” Steven gave you puppy eyes. “Explain to her that my name is Steven. Steven Grant, not some Marc.”

“I will. Make us tea in the meantime, okay? Looks like it’s gonna be a long night.”
