learned yesterday that clams have hearts. and nervous systems. im in third year biology.

#maybe they should make invertebrate anatomy a requirement because that was the most embarassing thing ever. how did i not know that #anyways in case anyone was wondering why i realized my understanding of invertebrate nervous systems was incorrect #shellfish are filter feeders and eat algae and one of those algae is dinoflagellates which make a nerve toxin called saxitoxin #and saxitoxin blocks the sodium ion channels in your nerves from working and thats how paralytic shellfish poisoning kills u #and i had always assumed invertebrates didn't have nervous systems and thats why they didnt die from the accumulation of saxitoxin #but turns out i was wrong and they do have nervous systems #and then i went insane trying to uerstand why shellfish were fine despite being filled with nerve toxin as organisms with nervous systems #anyways theres a single amino acid mutation in the sodium ion channel protein #and it decreases their sodium ion channel affinity to saxitoxin so it can't bind and stop their nerves from working so theyre fine #but we don't have that mutation so it kills us when we eat shellfish that have this toxin accumulated in them. love and light #fuckery #studying for this protist final is driving me insane

idk, i never really understood/was never really bothered by the popular “oh we’re so tiny in the wider universe and that means we’re insignificant” current of thought that you see in any comments section on that voyager pic of earth as a tiny speck of light. i don’t get it. yeah there are things in the universe much bigger than us. there are things in the universe much smaller than us too. i don’t really see how that changes the fact that what we do on our little planet matters to each other, which is the only type of mattering that exists. like      zoomed-out pictures of the earth and talking about how we’re just dust on a speck of rock doesn’t change any of the joys and pains we experience in our dust lives and societies, the need to try to increase joy and lessen pain on this speck of rock, or the complicated forms that trying to increase joy and lessen pain can take, i really don’t understand that kind of perspective

My dodgeball friends which are my tennis friends which are my biking friends which are my skiing friends took me skiing again yesterday.

It was only my third time skiing after 10+ years of not doing it, and surreptitiously ("surreptitiously") yesterday was a pure powder day, which we couldn't have predicted when we booked the tickets. Given the absolute zoo of the parking lot, I figured "powder" would be like skiing on a dream.

I was wrong. By god I was wrong. Powder makes you work 10x as hard to turn and control. Powder turns the ski slopes into checkboard patterns of mounds and valleys which, if taken at high enough speed, must generate some kind of musical note. Like a marimba of bad decisions.

I was making noises I wasn't proud of. I was watching my life flash before my eyes. I was voluntarily faceplanting in the snow one time, because my options were voluntary faceplant now or involuntary faceplant later at a speed I could only reach against my own will.

My one validation was reconvening with my friends at lunch and seeing that half of them also looked like they lost a long argument against God at the peak of that mountain, shoveling fries into their mouths and buying $5 powerade because it's that or death.

I got better like I got a feel for it as the day went on. But the fatigue stays with you. More than once I tried to tell my leg muscles to do something and they informed me the sodium-potassium channels were out to lunch. Informed me they were on their union-mandated break, but Good Luck to me and my own. I stopped on the slopes more than once to catch my breath. I flopped right over in the snow at the end of a run. And in the middle of it. And in the middle of the part before the middle.

I escaped the previous two ski sessions without being sore the next day but I knew this time I was done in. Did things to my legs that go against the Geneva convention. Would reap my consequences when the sun returned.

Woke up this morning. Legs were fine. Not just "not bad" but completely, 100% fine. As fine as if I'd done absolutely nothing the previous day.

My UPPER ARMS are killing me though. From, as best I can gather, the gargantuan, mammoth effort of... like pushing myself up from the snow like 5 times.

I should stop skipping arm day.

A mutation in the sodium channel gene. Sodium channels are pores in the muscle cell membrane which control contraction of the muscle fibers. However if you bred an H/N mare to an H/N stallion you will have about a 25% chance the foal being N/N, a 50% chance it will be H/N, and a 25% chance it will be H/H. IMPRESSIVE (but not really) Let's talk about the QH stallion, Impressive. All horses that have a HYPP positive gene of any kind, all descend from this horse. Impressive sired 2,250 foals and they estimate he has around 50,000 living descendants. No dilution of lineage will remove HYPP, as it is a dominant trait and will show whether you are 5 generations back or 2. HYPP SYMPTOMS HYPP varies in severity, it's not always equal and every horse may have different reactions. HYPP can be confused for tying-up or even colic, they may have difficulty breathing, muscle tremors, sweating, weakness, tremors. In more severe cases the horse may collapse from paralysis of the muscles in the airway and can result in sudden death. Not every horse who is HYPP positive may display symptoms, making this disease sometimes hard to detect. IS IT CURABLE? No. HYPP may be managed with diet and certain medicines for maintenance but it cannot be cured. H/H positive horses have poor prognosis and can be much more difficult to manage. Steddie Modern AU: TikTok

Steve would absolutely be that guy who would not understand TikTok. He and Eddie are older by the time it comes out, and most of the content there is of young kids going completely buck wild. Steve of course disapproves, hands on his hips, huffing about no supervision these days even though he was absolutely a terror in high school.

Eddie, rock star that he is, gets it to an extent. "They're expressing themselves!" he'd say.

Steve would only shake his phone around and point aggressively to a video playing on loop of a young man dancing along to some new trendy song, trying his hardest to seem cool and popular. "This isn't expression," he'd say, mother hen voice at top volume. "This is them trying to peacock to the world!"

"You did that once, too, Stevie."

"Yeah, and I was a little shit!"

And so Steve, in an effort to curb the young teenage population and keep them from making his mistakes (mostly due to parental neglect and hopeless, crushing self deprivation), would start his own TikTok channel.

"Hey there," he says into the camera, because for all the pride around his good looks, he has zero clue how to record a video of himself. "My names Steve, and I've been noticing a bunch of you on here who are out of control! Listen to me, alright? You need to dial it back. All that shit in high school is completely null and void when you're an adult. Trust me. From a former popular asshole, there's better shit you could be doing. Now let me show you how to scramble an egg."

His videos mostly consist of simple lessons. Giving out little pieces of advice. Teaching them basic life skills he had to learn on his own. How to cook. How to clean. How to iron a polo shirt. How to style your hair. How to do laundry. How to do basic first aid.

He often becomes transparent, telling them about his own childhood.

Sometimes he brings Eddie into his videos.

"This is my husband's favorite," he says, by way of explanation as he shows TikTok how to make pasta sauce from scratch. "He used to eat spaghetti out of a can. A fucking can!"

Despite his posturing on stage, Eddie becomes shy whenever a camera is in his face, and ducks his head away, smiling quietly towards the camera. "It's not that bad," he says.

"Not that- The sodium in that could kill an elephant!" Steve laughs.

"Yeah, well... I don't want you doing too much for me."

"I like doing things for you."

Eddie flushes and ducks his head, hiding his face away behind a curtain of curls.

Steve leans over a kisses his temple, pushing him gently out of frame where he'll be more comfortable, before turning back to the camera. "Anyway, this recipe is great if you're on your own for long periods of time. Especially because you can freeze some for later. Now the trick here is garlic. Let me show you how to peel it without making a huge mess!"

It's a month later where Dustin shows up at their door and shoves his phone into Steve's face. "Why the fuck," he'd snap, "are you trending?"

It turns out, the tiny community that Steve had been lecturing to wasn't as small as he originally thought.

There are so many kids out there desperate for parental affection, and they look to Steve, feeding off his pride, his kindness, his stories, his advice. Not only that but the fact that they get to see a former bully, a former popular kid, a man who grew up from neglect, become someone happy and married?

That's just... so wonderful.

"I've been on TikTok from the beginning and I only have, like, two thousand followers."

"So what? I don't have that many."

"You've got three million, Steve," said Dustin. Steve was not expecting that, squinting at the phone screen in his face. "Three fucking million! People are stitching your videos saying you guys are their new dads," Dustin squawked. "How did you not know you were this popular!?"

"I didn't know how to check my follower count!" Steve said, sincerely. It wasn't like he actually checked the thing! He just enjoyed making videos.

"You're so old."

"Hey," said Eddie from the kitchen, "don't talk about your mother that way."

"Yeah!" agreed Steve. "Don't talk to me that way! Now get into my next video so I can introduce you to your three million siblings."

And that is why I firmly believe that, if given the chance, Steve (and subsequently, Eddie) would absolutely become the internet's favorite parental figure(s).

buttttttt after she fights Crona and learns to go into madness then come back it's a lot easier for her to withstand your madness but also keep you grounded

you know how Marie was assigned to Stein because her wavelength would supposedly keep him down to earth? yeah well that's kind of what Maka does despite the both of you being meisters

im going to be cheesy and say that your guys' relationship is so strong that she keeps you from losing yourself to the kishin

At the time of posting, Crossover Fics accounted for 13% of the total fanfics on Ao3 (9177 works) (Fig 1A). They were predominantly featured in Batman All Media Types (5097 works) or DCU (1034 works), accounting for 68% of all crossover fics (Fig 1D). The majority of the works were rated for General (39%) or Teen Audiences (39%) (Fig 1B).

Doctor Benjamin breaks down energency room cases to their bare bones to help you understand step by step what went wrong and how to fix it.

Things like "this person has hypernatremia, hyper meaning too much, Na referring to sodium, and emia meaning presence in blood. High sodium presence in blood. This is how it causes brain damage..."

He takes concepts like organic chem and walks you through it in layman's terms so you come away with new vocabulary and a new understanding of how your body works. It's a great channel for picking up buzzwords that make you sound super smart.

He also has a very level headed and compassionate affect that doesn't come across as mocking or judgmental even if the case is something ridiculous that the patient should have known better about.

Hands down my favorite educational channel on the website.

If you're like me and you like watching "fix it" videos where filthy houses or cars or whatever get cleaned by a professional, but also have a sort of morbid curiosity, Crime Scene Cleaners is a good one too. They clean up the aftermath of severe injuries and unattended deaths as well as flooding or hoarding or other types of extreme clean up. It's very sad at times but very satisfying to see them take something ruined and remove that terrible burden from the people left behind.

i've been collecting resources and studies about myalgic encephalomyelitis for upcoming doctors appointments, and since there's a lot of misinformation about ME out there i thought i'd make a post with links and information that might be helpful for other ME patients, or just generally educational!

for anyone who doesn't know, myalgic encephalomyelitis is a debilitating multi system chronic illness. it's most characteristic symptom is post exertional malaise/symptom exacerbation (meaning symptoms getting significantly worse after exertion with prolonged recovery periods - see the diagnostic criteria linked below for more explanation). it has previously been called chronic fatigue syndrome, a name associated with claims of it being a psychosomatic condition rather than a medical one despite evidence to the contrary (here's a page with some information about the history of ME, and see the pathology section further down for evidence of ME being a physical disease). ME is also often comorbid with conditions like POTS (or other forms of orthostatic intolerance and dysautonomia), MCAS, and Small Fibre Neuropathy, and it's not uncommon for people who have long covid to develop ME. but yea! here's some links to resources i've gathered.
