With the Alts have any ever had a Howard pony that matched their alt costumes color?
It almost happened once. In Breakaway 1.0 Elizabeth walker had a teal ponytail until at least tech but it was cut by her debut. And all the evidence we have are two photos. For the longest time only the black and white photo existed and there was actual debate on her ponytail color and then we got confirmation that yes it was teal at one point. (Miss the early costume days so much, they dont do wild choices like that anymore)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I do understand that alt colored ponytails are not always possible as howard ponytails are used for other alt hairstyles. But I really wish the hair team did them at least once.

Costume Updates: 2023 West End Cast Change
A few notes before I start: - Kayleigh McKnight (Seymour) is currently injured. Gabriella Stylianou (alt A/S) is temporarily performing in her place, including in the preview footage. - As a general rule of thumb, Six has slowly been standardizing the costumes for both US and UK. Most of that has been changes to the UK system/style to make them more in line with the US changes initially made for Broadway (a few changes have made their way to the US from the UK though). There's been a steady rollout of updates over the period post-lockdowns, but with this cast change most of the major holdouts have been changed at once. I'll get to that in a moment. - Obviously it's very early in the run and we haven't seen all the costumes yet, particularly for alts. I'll continue to update as we do.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Costumes (credits below) - Nikki Bentley's Aragon costume has had a few construction changes to be more in line with the US costumes. No major design differences, though. Not sure on maker yet. - Thảo Therése Nguyễn has the darker green which has been standardized for the last few UK casts. Not sure on maker yet. - Gabriella was previously with Norwegian Cruise Lines as part of Bliss 2.0, but as expected she did get a new costume. Her corset is in the US style/design rather than the UK style (info here, here). I'm not sure who made it and very much wondering if the corset only could be a US-make, but don't have enough information yet to know if that could be the case. I'm also waiting to see what Kayleigh's looks like. - Reca Oakley (Cleves) is another former NCL queen, but as expected she also did get a new costume. It was made by Paul Aspinall. - Inez Budd's Howard skirt has been changed to the US-style construction. This has smaller panels (rather than the old NCL/UK style; post here). However, unlike the US skirts, the vertical stud lines still go all the way to the bottom hem. Per usual, it was made by Ella Dancewear. - Janiq Charles is a standard Parr style, made by Ashleigh Cherry Costumes per usual. - Otherwise, the costumes seem to be in line with all recent UK standardization. - The alts' costumes should match the changes made for these principals.
Wigs/HMU - Nikki Bentley has an auburn tone with a side part and doesn't seem to have bleached/ombre highlights. Curled bob, a little longer than some we've seen in the past. It's a full wig. - Thảo has dark roots with a silvery-toned bleached wig. It's a long wig rather than some of the recent bobs. It's a full wig. - Gabriella has a side part and darker, honey blonde tone. It's pretty mid-range for Seymour wigs but is shorter than some of the recent UK. It's a full wig. - Janiq Charles has the curls pulled over to the side. It's a full wig. - Otherwise, the principal wigs are pretty standard. - No pictures of Naomi Alade in costume yet, but I am expecting her to have braids for all or most of her roles. - We've also seen quite a bit of the makeup so far, which I'll make a post about in the coming days.
Boots @lightleckrereins already made posts about a lot of this (here, here) but for easy access: - The cast seems to be standardized to a shorter heel than prior casts, like the shorter heel Chlöe Hart and Natalie Pilkington both got later in the 22-23 UK Tour run. - They've introduced the double height boots that the US productions have had for a few years now (explanation of the difference here). However, they're still sticking to the regular UK-style boot body with crystals rather than switching to the US-style lattice and studs. Right now it looks like Nikki Bentley (Aragon) and Janiq Charles (Parr) have the double height, while Reca Oakley (Cleves) has the regular Cleves thigh highs and everyone else seems to have regular single height. Of course, that post includes Gabriella Stylianou rather than Kayleigh McKnight so no good look at Kayleigh or other alts yet. - All the boots seem to have interchangeable straps. We first saw these with the US and then UK alts - it allows them to have one pair of boots with a monochrome silver heel and then just trade out their straps depending on which costume they're wearing. This is the first time we've seen that for principals; Sofia talked more about why this change might be happening in the post I linked at the start of this section.
Alt costumes - We've seen a silver alt costume in progress that should be for Meg Dixon-Brasil. (Made by Paul Aspinall per usual) - We've also seen part of a pink alt costume. It could feasibly be either Natalie Pilkington's or it could be one for Hannah Lowther. Judging from Hannah's makeup, she does seem to have their standard makeup pieces for pink alt. - Naomi Alade has orange palette and glitter, so she presumably has the orange alt costume. - We still don't know what costume Natalie Pilkington will have. She has her old principal Seymour/Parr and pink alt system from the 2022-23 UK Tour, and during the 2021-22 UK Tour she had a black alt costume that was a mishmash of old and new pieces. I'm expecting that she'll wear a black alt costume (either entirely or mostly new), but it's possible that she reuses her old pink alt instead (it has been a while since she's worn black alt and most of it was already old). I talked in more depth about some of those possibilities here.
-------------------------- First row for each queen: junka_0.0 Second row for each queen: elliexboleyn (Nikki and Reca), cassie.zhao_ (Thảo), mattstacel (Gabriella, Janiq), Georgia.ccooper (Inez), Boots: crystalledbyjane

My fav six wig variants x
Rt bfr we start the parade, just wanna reiterate I am not calling any actors ugly, these are simply what looked best on the actress, and for the character they play in my views.
Aragon: Deirdre Dunkin
Tumblr media
There are MANY things i would like to say about this wig, but I'm tryina keep all these brief x
1: The wig, whilst looking completely new, still keeps to the standard Aragon crunches (Dutch braids, Hair gathered to back etc.)
2: The back curls look amazing, the wig must of taken so long to get perfect.
Boleyn: Baylie Carson:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, most bobo wigs seem to follow the same pre-standardised look (Straight hair, Pulled to back) so i was excited to see six stepping away from this look when the production photos came out.
After seeing them live, i can not only say that the wig works logistically (Short, pulled back front), but also that the curls actually assist in Baylie's characterization of the character (Bubbly, More chaotic etc.)
Edit: Bonus points for their curls going wild whenever they move x
Seymour: Jasmine Forsberg (Bway variant)
Tumblr media
Jasmine is phenomenal as Seymour, so it's no surprise her wig is exactly the same x. The front piece remains the same as her Aragon tour wig, however her curls are much more loose, and less bunched.
Might just be me but i feel like this works for her less regal, more humane characterization of Seymour.
Cleves: Nasia Thomas
Need i say more, Look at the beauty x.
Tumblr media
(Honestly would go as far to say it's the best cleves wig we've been given PERIOD, but we're all entitled to our own opinions x
Howard: Sophie Issacs:
Tumblr media
I like this wig for many of the same reasons as i do Baylie's, however in a slightlllyyy different context.
With Sophie's wig, I feel as though the more less structured, more curly appearance assists in portraying the character of Howard (a young, naive child) in a more visual sense, therefore making her solo an even more emotional journey for the audience, as her innocence, and child-like mannerisms are on full display.
Parr: The side-curl variant.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In this case, you simply cannot beat the original.
Appearance-wise, this variant is almost always a hit, it also works in a more technical sense, as the actresses hair is fully combed to one side of their forehead, allowing for less distraction onstage. Along with this, the simplistic appearance of the curls, allows for actors to have slightly more freedom over how they wish to style their hair.
EG: Danielle's Length & volume compared to Janiq's; Hannah's more maintained hairstyle.

Think of how good and heartfelt and honest a confession from Eddie would be this season.
In 2x01, Eddie is calm and collected. Despite nearly dying, he plays down the traumatic experience him and Buck just shared with a handshake and “You can have my back anyway,” a casual line we don’t understand the importance of until we learn more about Shannon.
In 3x03, Eddie has to make jokes and insult Buck before he can drop “There’s nobody in this world I trust more with my son than you.” He then turns, walking away before he stops to say his final line, “Thank you. For not giving up.” Cut to 3x09, where Eddie argues with Buck over his apology, claiming that everything’s fine. He’s still not being totally honest with Buck about his feelings, even when Buck outright asks him. (“If you’re not gonna be honest with Frank, at least be honest with me.”)
In 4x14, Eddie once again opens with humor but doesn’t rely on it, quickly becoming serious. He’s honest with Buck; however, throughout “I know you wouldn’t” and “But no one will ever fight for my son as hard as you” and “You act like you’re expendable, but you’re wrong,” he’s looking away or down. He’s still unable to be totally vulnerable with Buck about his feelings while making eye contact.
In 5x13, Eddie is in therapy and is finally honest about his fears with Buck: “I’m afraid . . . that I’m never gonna feel normal again,” he says, looking Buck right in the eye.
If Eddie confesses his love to Buck in 6b, he won’t have to hide his feelings through teasing. He won’t have to lie about them or tuck them away in a box. He won’t even have to look away or wait until he’s walking out through the doorway to say his truth. He could just tell Buck he loves him.

Janiq’s new wig, while the reasoning is understandable since the original was damaging her hair and I love the volume, is a bit of a shame to lose the classic Parr style, do you think it’ll still be around in future productions or is the original side part retired for now you think?
Also if you were to keep the current back pony Parr style but still incorporate more afro style hair textures, how’d you personally do it? Braids? Or maybe a puff a la Viquichelle or Cassy’s Aragon?
I think its unlikely they retire the side ponytail. It is one of the iconic six looks. The back ponytail was made out of necesity because the side ponytail doesn't really work with straight or wavy hair. Anything less curly than 3B will not have enough volume or deflate throughout the show if curled. And the few curled alternatives they did depend a lot on face shape: side swept curls (Gabriella), side curls (Roxanne and Natalie), small tightly curled ponytail (Sydney and Tay), curled poof on the front (Erin and Kelsee). So the back ponytail is a good alternative that can fit everyone with small alterations.
Tumblr media
What I think is happening is that there are more non black Parrs than ever before so a lot of them have the back ponytail. But once you start thinking about it there are a lot of side ponytails in play at the moment. Janiq does have the back ponytail and I did see that the old wig was damaging her hair, but the most important thing to me is that she seems to love the back ponytail on herself over her original style. Which I think should always be a priority. Shakira seems to alternate between side and back ponytail depending on the status of her hair on the day (which I love btw). Tamara and Ellie wear the side ponytail. Jana has the side ponytail and I expect her to keep it for broadway. Hailey has side braids but thats in a way a take on side ponytail. And recently Ayla, Kristina, Leah, Monique and Eloise all had side ponytails. Also I assume Carlina will get it too.
Tumblr media
Its just a matter of for a really long time the side ponytail dominated (some version of back Parr ponytail has been in play since late 2019) but now things are semi evenly split between that and the back ponytail. But its definitely not dissapearing

Why did Roxanne, Erin and Kelsey all switch from the side pony tail to the braid and back pony tail? Roxanne's old Parr wig was one of the best of any production, and to switch out both Erin and Kelsey's wigs when they're different from what Gabriella wore or what they used to wear just feels bizarre
Wig design is basically about trying to take the typical standardized styles and translate them to the individual actors’ faces, hair/skin tones, and textures. (Here’s a great in-depth post Sofia did that goes into more detail about this and talks about Roxanne Couch’s change too). In this case, the mid-ponytails are more flattering on them than the side.
Some styles just work better than others for different facial shapes - some people look better with a high up do, with a low, half pulled back, all down, bangs, whatever. In Roxanne’s case, the side ponytail was a little too harsh; the new wig softens and flatters her face more subtly. Similar reason for Erin Ramirez/Marilyn Caserta/Kelsee Kimmel as well. The old styles weren’t bad on them, and it was nice on Roxanne particularly! But the new styling is a better fit for all of them.
It’s also pretty heavily based on hair texture. The initial side Parr styling was based on a style sometimes worn by Alicia Keys, and the hairstyle is primarily worn by Black women. As such it's based on a range of hair types and textures that we mostly see in (some) Black women: defined, soft, loose curls with a lot of volume. If you're familiar with hair typing, it's going to work best with hair in the type 3 categories (here's a good introductory article with examples). It's a gorgeous style that can look lovely! It was very flattering on Maiya Quansah-Breed and has continued to work well for queens with similar hair styles. But Six has struggled from the start with adapting it to other hair types and textures. Most of the other Six hairstyles are generic enough that they can be adapted to different textures with minimal change to the overall aesthetic. The original Parr not so much, because it really needs that specific combo of qualities for the hairstyle to work. If you have the looseness but don't have the right curl or the volume it looks too flat and asymmetrical, which we saw with Gabriela Carrillo's initial hairstyle; if you go for the curl but go too short or structured it's just not going to flatter as many of the actors and you've lost that really lovely softness, which we've seen with quite a few of the non-Black actors' styles. Many of the Black actors naturally have the hair texture(s) and type(s) that lend itself well to the hairstyle, so they've generally had a lot of success with those. For the Black actors that don't, they've generally A. adapted the hairstyle to work with their natural hair (usually for queens with enough volume that it still translates well, like Viquichele Cross or Danielle Steers), OR B. given them a wig that may not quite match their natural hair texture, but still looks natural and allows for the right texture/structure. (Generally queens in both camps have a type 4 hair texture and which they go for has depended on budget and hair care for the individual actor.) But for the non-Black actors, that's much more difficult. Very few non-Black actors have hair that's even remotely the right texture for this hairstyle: actors like Gabriela Carrillo and Roxanne Couch have some texture but not enough of the curl and volume needed, while actors like Erin Ramirez and Kelsee Kimmel have natural hair textures that are much closer to working but still don't quite work. They could give these actors a wig with a texture different than their own that would be more conducive to the style, but while doing so generally reads as natural on the Black queens, doing so for non-Black queens would often make the wig read as unnatural or even outright inappropriate. The UK has historically gotten around all that by doing the curly side ponytail. It does work fairly well, but it's still not flattering on everyone and the style they go for is visibly unnaturally curled, which isn't inherently bad but doesn't work as well for Parr as it does for some of the other queens (her whole vibe is very low fuss, or as low as it can be given the spectacle that is Six costumes). It's not a bad choice, and like you said Roxanne's was one of the best! But it's not going to work well for everyone, and for Roxanne specifically the switch to a back ponytail is a slightly better fit, and of course they've continued that trend since.
In the US (and NCL) there's been a whole lot of experimentation. The Aragon Tour alone has gone through multiple different hairstyles. Think Gabriela Carrillo's original Aragon Tour side-swept to her loose low side ponytail, compared to Kelsee Kimmel and Erin Ramirez's loose curly updos piled more directly on top of their heads. Over on the Boleyn Tour we've seen Tay Pearlstein with a smaller and more structured side updo, and then Sydney Parra with a looser and relatively longer side ponytail (which is one of my personal favorites, actually!). For Gabi and Sydney they experimented until they got to styles they ultimately were happy with, and now they're standardized to the current back ponytail iteration, but Erin/Kelsee/Tay never quite had that. TL;DR: Back ponytail is both more flattering on most of them + an easier style adaptation for some of the queens whose hair doesn't lend itself as well to the side ponytails.
Also quick note that there’s also nothing saying the alternates’ hairstyles have to be remotely identical to the principals! Six has never really gone for that anyway, beyond the usual standardization. Like I said, they experimented with Gabi's wig (over a longgg period of time) until they got to something they were happy with, but it seems like they just never got to that point with Erin/Kelsee/Tay/etc!
