Children of Irradiated Skies, part 2 (continued from part 1). Photographs of imprints from “mirror worlds” taken near American nuclear testing sites with CERN’s experimental ADAM (Adjacent-Dimension Atomic Mirror) quantum camera. These brief alternate realities are often referred to as “Quantum Shards.” The name was coined by Dr. Rosamund Volstof, head of CERN’s Adjacent-Dimension Research Laboratory, who has devoted her life’s work to advancing her late grandfather’s “brilliant but deeply problematic” work in cross-dimensional technology.
“A ‘mirror’ world suggests a flat, stable, accurate reflection,” Volstof explains, “but these reflections are as incomplete and unstable as what you might expect to catch in the glimmer of a thin shard of glass propelled through the air by an explosion.
“When I first joined CERN, the team was calling them ‘sparks’. The thinking at the time was they were quantum attempts to form new ‘mutant’ dimensions. But what we have found since is that their creation - and imminent destruction - is not a spark hoping to catch a flame, but rather a scream, released in agony, needing to cry out in all its fury for a moment before being freed to dissolve into the air.
“The Shards’ existence is an improbability so great that their relative coherence is as astonishing as their undeniable peculiarity. The repetitions of color and form that populate Quantum Shards are the glue of a shared tragedy between dimensions that holds their disparate elements together, however briefly. Shapes of atoms and nucleii and mushroom clouds woven in to the tapestry of the world are afterimages of unnatural acts of molecular violence, inflicted by man not merely onto his fellow man or even merely his earth, but to every string in the infinite fabric of adjacent spacetime. In this way, each Shard is a scream of pain in the form of a sketch, scribbled in rage by spacetime itself, releasing its trauma into a passionate work of messy art before crumpling it up and tossing it away.”
