I know I posted some specific Shuriki era hcs here https://cartoonfangirl1218.tumblr.com/post/625745298299469824/shuriki-years-estoma-hcs
But reading @blueflyingturtleontheway story reminded me of these negotiation hcs that I'm pretty sure I haven't posted, so here they are.
I imagine in the Shuriki days when Paraíso vs Avalor rivalry was still intact, Esteban and Dona would go into trade deals like.
Tumblr media
Though dealing with Paraíso was infinitely easier than negotiating with a younger King Hector when he first got the full power of being king.
Esteban: Ugh what could be worse than trade deals with Paraiso?
(Several large golden boats come to the dock with Hector yelling out of a bullhorn).
Doña: I thought it'd be good to get the nightmares done in one day.
Tumblr media
They may or may not have had a few drinks before going into negotiations with Hector. It was the only thing that made the talks bearable and even a little funny.
And the while, there was Shuriki looming over head like a classic telenovela villain with ridiculous requests and demands for Esteban like getting a surplus of diamonds from this country, more benefits from a treaty than the other person etc. Of course, she'd never lifted a finger to do it herself because

I'm biased as heck and I'm gonna go with one of my faves - how about 18, 22 and 25 for Francisco from EoA and a freebie question - thoughts on his relationship with Esteban pre and post series?
18. How about a relationship they have in canon with another character that you admire?
It gets much less screen time/focus than his relationship with the other characters, but Francisco's relationship with Isabel is very underrated and one of my favorites to watch. It's especially poignant and striking as Francisco is the oldest of the main characters, and Isabel is the youngest--but there is still so much understanding and affection between them. And the two of them have such similar personalities.
I feel like they are probably the most alike of all the Flores family members. Both are quieter and relatively even tempered (or at least compared to the rest of the family who are much more talkative and hot-headed), sensitive, creative/artistic. I'd also say that they are the two "wisest" members of the family and the most open-minded. (Though of course, they do have their very stubborn moments as well!)
22. If you're a fic reader, what's something you like in fics when it comes to this character? Something you don't like?
Honestly, I don't think I've read a ton of Francisco fic, but not really sure that there's a ton out there. But I do enjoy the little I see of him as a background character in other fics. In terms of an aspect that I like (and would love to see more of), I really enjoy seeing focus on his relationships with Isabel and Esteban. Much of the Francisco content that we see in the show itself is understandably focused on his relationships with Luisa and Elena, so it's always nice to see fanwork delve deeper into his dynamics with the other members of his family. I've already talked a bit about his relationship with Isabel and I will talk more in another question about his relationship with Esteban. But yeah, these are really rich, underrated dynamics that have so much wonderful potential to be explored.
As for something I don't like, I read a fic once where Francisco died the day after "Coronation Day," and he sort of knew that it was going to be his last day, which gave him a bit of an extra vitality on the day itself. And just...it made me too sad. Plus, like Esteban was just finally reintegrated into the family again, Elena just ascended the throne. There's so much going on in Francisco's life at the end of the series that he should be there for. Yeah, I get that he's older and he might not be in the best of health (especially given his sweet tooth). But no, in my mind, all the characters (except Shuriki, lol) are functionally immortal for the foreseeable future.
25. What was your first impression of this character? How about now?
I liked Francisco reasonably well from the start, and I like him even better now. I find him a nice, calming presence for the Flores family. He gets a long reasonably well with everyone and is able to provide some very sweet moments as well as a little bit of humor.
26. FREEBIE QUESTION!!-- thoughts on his relationship with Esteban pre and post series?
While we really don't get to see all that much of it, I feel that Francisco's relationship with Esteban was very, very good-- pre-series, during the main timeline of the show, and post-series alike. In fact, I feel like I would go so far as to say that it's probably one of (if not THE) most positive relationship in Esteban's life. Esteban was around 8-9, when he was orphaned, so he likely remembers very little about his actual father. Instead, Francisco was the fatherly presence guiding Esteban through the struggles of adolescence.
He would've been the one who taught Esteban everything he knows about being a man. He would have been the one to teach him how to tie his cravat and how to shave. (My headcanon is that adult!Esteban decided to grow out his beard and mustache during the Dark Times specifically as a way of honoring his absent abuelo who has his own impressive facial hair). He was probably also the one to teach Esteban how to play the guitar and the one we see in "Secret of Avalor" may even have been a gift from him. (Shame that Shuriki probably had it destroyed at the end of the scene).
And the little hints that we see of their relationship in the main series suggest that the relationship continues to be strong. During Esteban's trial, Francisco is the only one to vote in his favor. His line about judging Esteban not for the mistakes of his past but the man he has become in the present--suggest that in Francisco's view, Esteban has become a man that he is proud of and one that is already worthy of forgiveness/a second chance. As a lonely, love-starved, fatherless boy, Esteban probably worshipped Francisco when he was a child, and so to hear that --even knowing Esteban's greatest mistake--Francisco is still proud of what he's become must have been so validating for Esteban as an adult. That's all he's ever wanted: to be a great man, a true son of Avalor just like his abuelo. Too bad Luisa then totally crushes Esteban's heart immediately afterwards.
I am also very struck by the throne room scene with Francisco, Luisa, and Cahu in "Coronation Day." While Luisa has the flashier role in the scene and the more powerful lines, I'd argue that Francisco is actually the one who ultimately inspires Esteban's decision to sacrifice himself for Elena.
Esteban watches Francisco call for a sword to defend Luisa from Cahu, hears Francisco ask him "why are you doing this, Esteban?" because Francisco still cares enough about him to want to understand. Esteban knows that Francisco is the kind of man that he himself has always wanted to be, the man that he should be. The man that maybe he still could be if only he had just one more chance. And then he does get that chance, and he's finally able to do exactly what Francisco would do--sacrifice himself to save his family.
I also have a lot of feelings about how the last interaction we see between the two of them on the show is at the end of Esteban's sacrifice-redemption-and-resurrection scene. We see Francisco place a hand on Esteban's shoulder as the scene fades to black.

I love reimagining Sofia the First episodes where Elena is inside the Amulet of Avalor from her perspective. You’re a sixteen-year-old heir to the throne trapped in a gemstone as a disembodied spirit with murdered parents, living family still in danger, a colonized country in need of liberation and untreated PTSD who nobody around you even knows exist. This has been your life for thirty-nine years by the time you finally find someone who might have the potential to free you. But first, you have to help her grow as a person. And all of these shenanigans keep happening. What was she thinking the whole time?
Sofia: (boasting to her friends about getting to sing the Enchancian anthem)
Elena: Oh my God, shut up. You sound like Esteban, and not in a good way.
Elena, a teenager and older sibling who hasn’t had the chance to tease anyone in roughly four decades: So… you’re expected to sing in front of a huge crowd tomorrow? Would be a shame. If something were to. Happen.
***
Amber: (deceives and manipulates Sofia and steals her amulet for personal gain)
Elena: You fucking brat! How dare you take advantage of your own sister’s trust after she’s been nothing but kind to you? Don’t you know how lucky you are? I would do anything to be able to just see my little sister again, talk to her, hug her, know that she’s safe and okay, let alone make her happy myself. You have so much, but you’re too spoiled rotten to appreciate it. You mistreat your family? Fine. Let’s see how you like them being threatened by an evil sorceress trying to take over your kingdom! ‘Cause trust me, it isn’t fun. Learn to be selfless or lose everything you’ve ever had! A BITCH FOR A BITCH!
***
Ivy: (takes the amulet to destroy it, which would kill Elena)
Elena: Shit.
***
Cedric: (deceives and manipulates Sofia and steals her amulet for personal gain)
Elena, who’s been onto him since day one, but feels completely unthreatened: You could be coveting any source of powerful magic, but no, you want the only one that you already know has a moral compass and will curse you for doing wrong. Genuine question: what are you doing with your life? I’m just gonna give you literal sticky fingers, and I’ll revoke that if you’re nice. You obviously don’t need much help to fail.
***
Miranda and Roland: (have sweet, bond-affirming moments with their children as good parents)
Elena: Aw, that’s nice. That’s - that’s nice. I’m fine.
***
Sofia: (is ten)
Elena: I’m so proud of Sofia. I think it’s time to enlist her to release me. Now how can I communicate that? Visions of Shuriki killing my parents and trying to kill me will get her started, right?

I imagine there were at least some younger citizens from the Northern Islands who saw that someone from their country was in power at Avalor and moved in, seeking their fortune. This kind of thing always happens during colonization, and I can see Shuriki encouraging it.
Imagine that. They could have been there for 41 years. How did they affect the culture? I imagine there were some interracial marriages as well. What about the language? I suppose Shuriki always held her native language as the "superior" one. Bet this also fucked with the upper class who desired to keep their status (better learn Northerner to please the new queen, folks!). And in turn, how were they affected when the Castillos came into power once more? I mean, there were children turned into adults who grew up with this mixed culture. Talk about language barriers with the younger kids.
Things to wonder about.

I did more research, and looked to some quotes from Elena, and I was indeed correct when I say that Elena was in a Locked In Syndrome state inside of the amulet for 41 years. Meaning she was aware, but cannot move, nor communicate verbally due to complete paralysis of all voluntary muscles in her body except maybe for eye movement, blinking and crying. Except I think since her eyes were closed when she came out of the amulet, she had Total Locked-In Syndrome, or Completely Locked-In Syndrome (CLIS) where even the eyes are paralyzed. So she relied on her hearing, and the magic of the amulet to engage with the outside world I.E “With each deed preformed for better or worse, a power is granted, a blessing, or a curse.”
My evidence? In Elena: The Secret of Avalor, in the song My Time, Elena states “It feels so weird having my feet on the ground. It’s been a while since I’ve been walking around. With my own eyes, I can once again see.” And, she forgot how to walk. Which is a bit confusing considering the Sofia The First finale, Sofia had free will, and could walk, talk, and move in the amulet??? Either she spent wayyyyyy to much time in that amulet and sort of became one with it, or she actually died when Shuriki blasted her and the amulet pulled her soul inside instead of her actual body/vessel.

It feels like people really forget sometimes that Shuriki has been ruling for 41 years, there are two generations that have grown up under her and have no idea what life looked like before she came
#Personal#*Avalor under Shuriki*#The biggest port in the whole EverRealm#Merchants arrive from over the world to trade there#Therefore Shuriki is bad#…#I mean yes she erased their culture#their national identity#And THIS is what bad#Not that she’s an evil sorceress#She wasn’t even violent she just sat at the throne and gained power#She literally didn’t care about people#Which means she neither thought about them nor harmed them#Thanks to Esteban life in Avalor wasn’t that terrible#The young generations like Gabe’s have NO reason to hate her#This is how they got used to live because they had NOTHING to compare with#Unless their parents were some rebels but this is unlikely if you care about your child’s safety#You cannot tell me that every single Avaloran hated her#There’s been SUCH strong propaganda under her it literally can’t work like that#Why would young generations care about festivals and music if they never experienced it?#There’s no way I’m saying Shuriki is nice of course not#But c’mon guys let’s be realistic#Even if we take Gabe into account#Do you really want to tell me that he had anything against her?#When he was a kid and a young teen?#With absolutely non-rebellious parents?#Yes Mateo is different because he learnt magic and was literally breaking the law so of course he treated Shuriki differently#But the majority of Avaloran kids were like Gabe#Because again they didn’t have anything to compare with#And if we talk about old people and adults too there must have been people who supported her this is just a lot more realistic

For character ask game: Gabe-1,2,14,18,20
1. Why do you like or dislike this character?
Aaah it's so difficult to put it into words. I generally really like characters who are "normal" and achieve everything because of their dreams, motivation and hard work and Gabe is literally "just some guy", he's our best look into Shuriki era Avalor and literally, his whole story and character development could have not happened if not for one decision made not even by him, that we didn't even see in the show (him being made Elena's guard) and then if he didn't PUT HIS WHOLE HEART INTO IT!!!
And it's just that, I love how he changed throughout the show, how we see more sides of him and outside of that first promotion, everything that happens to him he has to work for (and tbf he probably had to do something meaningful to become Elena's guard too). He has big ambitions and a big heart which is literally the best combination.
2. Favorite canon thing about this character?
Hmm maybe how he never gives up? He might not believe in himself, he might be beaten or humiliated, it might seem hopeless, but he'll always stand up and fight for what he believes in.
And my second favourite thing is definitely how much he loves his friends and family <3
14. Assign a fashion aesthetic to this character.
Guard uniforms
Zbbdhzhs okay no, I have this one half-serious headcanon that Gabe is actually very knowledgeable in fashion, he just always wears the uniform because it's just the most comfortable given that he's almost always on duty when we see him. And it would probably be easier if I knew anything about fashion
But okay I tried putting together a little visualization!
Tumblr media
So I definitely think that Gabe's personal style is definitely very simple and as much as he cares about looking well put together, he doesn't care all that much about what he wears, so what he has in To Queen or not to Queen I think is actually pretty realistic. But if I was to design him a casual outfit I'd say that he takes a lot of inspiration from Antonio Agama, since he's such a great fan of his, so he definitely goes for the "adventurer" vibes. So high boots with tucked in pants, a simple shirt with rolled up sleeves, except I'd give him a neckline more similar to Naomi's and an ascot, like Mateo's except maybe tied more loosely (he bonds with Mateo by going ascot shopping together.) As for colors I'd put him in warm, earthy tones - browns, beige, red, maybe some khaki, and navy for more elegant occasions (yes, because of his uniform)
And I know that's not what the question was about but I also started thinking about his style in the sense of modern fashion.
Tumblr media
I think he'd still dress in a kind of military-but-casual style, he wants his clothes to be practical first and foremost. I allowed myself to give him a bit more accessories, since again, he's not flashy but a watch is just a useful thing to have. The paracord bracelet I imagine was a gift from some friend who thought that he should accessorize more XD and he wears it because hey, you never know when you might need a piece of rope. Also Gabe strikes me as the type to always be warm, so it's t-shirts for him for the majority of the year, but he'd look great in a biker jacket, you can't convince me otherwise. (Bonus not included: given how big of a fan of Antonio Agama, he definitely owned an Indiana Jones type of hat at some point and thought it made him look so cool. He still wears it sometimes when he's out of town with his closest friends and it kind of grew into an iconic part of his wardrobe between them.)
18. How about a relationship they have in canon with another character that you admire?
His friendship with Elena! Cause really, it's so diverse, since it's so full of contradictions and they're basically opposites in many aspects, but through all of this they just care for each other so much and it's just- A
20. Which other character is the ideal best friend for this character, the amount of screentime they share doesn't matter?
Ricoooooo
I'll be sharing my "Gabe and Rico are friends" propaganda until the day I die, I fully believe they are friends and in fact have been almost since the beginning of Gabe's time in the guard (okay, so maybe they weren't that close pre The Curse of El Guapo, but I still think they were at least work friends and definitely became closer with time, you can pry their friendship from my cold dead fingers)
Thank you so much for sending this ask!! As you know, I love talking about Gabe zbsggs

What would be the backstory of Shuriki from Elena of Avalor, where did she come from, and why was she so intent on conquering Avalor
Ok so here's what I've come up with:
Tumblr media
Her real name is Fran, and years ago in the Northern Isles she and her twin sister Nan were taken in as maids a strange old woman called Frau Holle, who turned out to be a sorceress. She blessed Nan for her industry and kindess but cursed Fran for her laziness and selfishness. Nan creates diamonds and pearls anytime she sings and eventually marries a king, while Fran has toads and snakes fall out of her mouth anytime she speaks and is understandablely shunned.
However she doesn't give into her curse and seeks out a way to change her fate, eventually coming to the attention of Frau Holle's twin sister Frau Trude, who's as wicked as her sister is good. Frau Trude trains the angry young girl in magic, breaking the toad spell, and helps her to spread chaos within her sister’s kingdom.
Eventually she is overcome by the forces of good, and Nan, now Queen, in mercy banishes her sister from the Northern Isles. Before she goes though Fran seeks to divine what new opportunities for power lie within her reach, and has Frau Trude divine her future.
The vision is hazy and Fran doesn't have time to hear all of it before th soldiers come to drive her out, but the old witch forsees that she will one day rule over a kingdom across the sea called Avalor, and will hold the powerful "Scepter of the Night" at one point.
Fran takes this as gospel and determines to build up her power again to accomplish this Destiny. And so she does.
Two little side things, part of the reason she bans music is that it reminds her of her sister's golden singing gift (and the cruel songs people would sing about her speaking toads).
And her chosen name "Shuriki" is a mispelled/misheard version of the old Maruvian word "Chiriqui" which means Valley of the Night, as she wanted a name that would point to her destiny to weild the Scepter of Night, and she didnt have enough respect for the culture of the land she took over to spell or pronounce it correctly

One of the craziest things about EoA backstory is they needed to abide by the previously established StF lore that Aunt Tilly had the amulet before Sofia. But even so.. the Dark Times still didn't have be 41 years long? Tilly is at *most* in her early 40s and the earliest she likely got the amulet was age 7-8. They could've gotten away with like 15-25 years of Shuriki and still would've made sense. But no, must extend Elena and Esteban's respective traumas as long as possible. smh.
I haven't watched any of Sofia unless you count the Elena backdoor pilot so I wasn't aware that was where they got the 41 number from. I don't object to it as premise — I mean, fuck, I'm writing a fuck-off massive fic about it because I'm obsessed with it — but I do just find it funny that the show... clearly thinks about and uses it sometimes (eg: Elena's friend, I forget her name but the one who liked dancing, who's now a middle-aged woman) but then sometimes just. Forgets. Or seriously doesn't think about the ramifications of what that number means. My two examples off the top of my head being 1) Antonia's entire backstory, because the only way the math works there is if her dad worked for Shuriki, which makes the whole aspiration-to-be-a-royal-guard extremely awkward lmao, and 2) anytime they talk about holiday traditions, like in the Navidad episode they talk about all these big public parties they always have and I'm just sitting there. No you didn't. Shuriki banned parties and signing. You haven't done this in decades literally what are you talking about XD
It's fascinating to me partially because like. That's a whole lifespan. It's a short lifespan, that's young for a human to die (even in Ye Olden Days, lifespan averages that land in the 30s are generally failing to exclude infant & child mortality, humans hundreds of years ago did regularly survive into their 50s or 60s or older if they made it to adulthood), but you could grow up and get married and have a child that you raise to adulthood in that span of years. It's a really long time. But it's also not the stock fantasy, "the evil ruler has been here for 500 years." It's not an "it's always been this way" kind of thing but it is something that whole generations have grown up under, not just a "this was a few horrible years but everyone except toddlers still remembers when things were better" length of time. Forty-one is such a real number, and that's what can make it realistically horrifying.
Of course, that kind of goes over kids' heads, because when you're eight years old there isn't a ton of functional difference between forty-one years and four hundred, they're both just way, way longer than you've been alive. And I think the writers know that, which is part of why they skate over it a lot. But it's so fun to play with in fanfic land and this is what sends my brain spiraling about Esteban, just the, okay. You had a whole life for forty-one years that included all of the mundane things that you can't exclude from that kind of length of time. You had head colds and discovered a new food you like and did boring mundane paperwork and got used to it, because that was just your life for a really long fucking time. So what the fuck was it like surviving all that time?

Elena of Avalor is a really solid show. There are like, almost no flaws in the narrative that I can find, and the ones I DO find are all minor and don't really effect it in the grand scheme of things, which is really impressive!!! But if I have one major complaint, it's with how the show handles it's magic system.
Not counting any contradictions between EoA and StF, the lore isn't so much inconsistent as it is vague. There's a lot I wish they elaborated on, mostly about Elena's powers, that they just didn't. So here's a bulleted list of all the things I wish got dug into a little deeper :D
The difference between normal wizards and malvagos. All we get on that front is that malvagos use dark magic that wizards are incapable of using? And that you become one by getting a spell cast on you??? And they have animal motifs?????? Like wtf is up with that.
How much magic Elena gained from being in the amulet. She was literally marinating in magical juices for 41 years, which you'd think would have deeper effects then just seeing ghosts and being able to use a cool scepter??? But she doesn't get any powers independent of magical objects until Takaìna, which is kinda weird and leads into my next point...
How the magic Elena gained from the amulet effected the magic she gained from Takaìna!!! Obviously Takaìna is a MUCH more powerful source of magical radiation then the necklace, so falling into that gives you more magic, but did the stuff Elena got from the well just get added on to her amulet magic? Did it enhance the already present magic?
Also, how does Takaìna even work? Is it like radiation but not deadly? Does falling into a well full of crystals hurt? Because I bet that would fuckin hurt. Why does falling into a well of crystals even give you, or the stick you're holding, powers in the first place? Does it actually even GIVE humans inherent powers or does it just give them the ability to use magical items? Is Elena's DRESS the actual source of her mood magic??? I mean we never see her use the mood magic WITHOUT her color changing dress so like-
On an unrelated note, why is Zuzo the only chanul Elena sees consistently? Is it because he's her chanul? Is it because she's just coincidentally never in the same room as anybody else's? Given how chanul's powers work being pretty similar to the way spirits come to the living world on Dia De Los Muertos you'de think she'd be able to see all chanuls all the time. Also cAN ESTEBAN SEE GHOSTS TO???? LITERALLY WHY HAVEN'T I SEEN ANYBODY EXPLORE THAT POSSIBLITY THERE'S SO MUCH POTENTIAL THERE-
How the fuck does the Scepter of Light work? Elena's the only person who can use it at the beginning of the series, and up until the Scepter of Night is introduced I just kind of assume it was because the amulet gave her a Very Special type of magic. But then Shuriki uses the Scepter of Night with no issues whatsoever???? What's her source of inherent magic??????? And then ASH can KIND OF USE THE SCEPTER OF LIGHT????? IS IT BECAUSE MALVAGOS HAVE INHERENT MAGIC IN THERE SOMEWHERE?????? BUT THEN ELENA SAYS IT ONLY RESPONDS TO GOOD MAGIC WHICH IS CONFUSING BECAUSE I WAS UNDER THE IMPRESSION THAT AT LEAST ELENA'S MAGIC WAS PRETTY NEUTRAL!!! THEN ESTEBAN CAN'T USE IT UNTIL HE SWITCHES SIDES BUT WHY???? WHAT MAKES MAGIC GOOD VS EVIL!?!?!?!?!? WHAT THE FUCK!?!?!?!?!?
Okay this one's kind of just a nitpick but there are several spells that just. Do the same thing. Like the turn somebody upside-down spell is just Levaluke with extra steps 💀
Why is Esteban's hair like that after he falls in the well? We know it isn't stuck like that forever because he manages to get it under control during the coronation. Is making the users hair stick up his staff's version of the scepter glowing to signify somebody can use it? If so WE WERE ROBBED OF ELENA'S HAIR STICKING UP LIKE THAT IN THE FINALE THAT WOULD'VE BEEN SO FUCKING FUNNY-
Okay those are all the things I can think of right now. Tbh I'm kind of just posting this to open up a discussion? I wanna rally together what little is left of this fandom to try and piece together a coherent magic system!!! It's what this show deserves!!!!!!!!/pos

I need help
Ok, I need help finding a group of fics that I read years ago when I first found out about fanfics. It was really well done and there were at least four, but only a pair told the whole story.
There was one featuring Mateo x Elena and Gabe x Naomi. The one paired with it was a Sofia x Cedric (aged up and down respectively. I think at the time of the Elena one, that one comes first, Sofia is 14 and Cedric is 16)
But there's also the inverse of that with the same story. It would be Gabe x Elena and Mateo x Naomi. And for the Sofia one, she's with Hugo instead. I don't know what changes were made with that one, I didn't read those.
The story in the Elena one, which comes first, is that Elena must choose a suitor before she becomes queen. And Shuriki is already planning her comeback and is less evil than her show counterpart. By the end, Elena ends up with who she wants and Shuriki with Esteban in a house they can't leave. In that, James and Isabel promise to be together later in life. In the Mateo x Elena one, Cedric and Sofia help lead the charge to save Elena from Shuriki- at least from the side character point of view.
I do like the story of the second one a bit better. For the Cedfia one, it's a sort of Beauty and the Beast fic. Cedric succeeds in taking over the kingdom, sending Marranda and Baileywick into hiding in Elvenmore. The kids begin trying to take him down from the underground, Sofia becoming the leader and a sort of legend.
Eventually she gets captured by Cedric and that's when the beauty and the beast stuff starts. Especially since they used to be friends, he of course treats her kindly. There's also a plot of Cedric meeting different Disney villains for advice. Including Captain Hook, the Evil Queen, and the Horned King (which I gather is from the Black Cauldron). I think that movie also plays a big part in the ending.
Please help me find this, I wanna read it again!

Anyway, someone mentioned that there should be more shuriki fics, which I totally agree but with a 41 year rule, its so vast, I could never do it myself. As it is I haven’t even made a post of hcs.
But I just realized I have inadvertently when writing hcs for the other characters of how Shuriki’s rule affected them, the class system, the rebellions etc.
So click on the links if you’d like (warning, these were done during season 2 in 2018 so some things may have been disproven since then)

Eoa 5, 6, 9, 16, 24?
5. 3 favourite characters?
Esteban, Elena, Naomi. (Though it's a very close call between Naomi and Valentina ngl and sometimes, Elena annoys me a little and gets bumped down a place or two).
6. Least favourite character?
Shuriki in the sense that she's the one who personally evokes the most angry feelings in me. But I also thinks she's a particularly good and effective villain and a very effective means of creating high stakes and woobifying Esteban further, so she can stay in my book.
I also really dislike Cristobal Castillo a fair bit for obvious reasons, but I think he also works fairly effectively in the context of the show as both a temporary baddie and as foil to Esteban (even if I wish we could've seen them interact more).
I think Fiero and Zopilote are both really interesting conceptually but were largely wasted in the show itself. Maybe they would've worked better if they were combined into a single character. Ash's evil mentor who serves as a foil to her and to Mateo, allies temporarily with Shuriki for POWAH (but always plans to betray her) in S2 and is both very proud of and very demanding of Ash. But in their current incarnation, they're just kind of there and largely pointless to me.
In terms of characters who weren't specifically designed to be villains, I am not particularly fond of Flo, Charoca, Luisa, or Mateo. I wouldn't say I "hate" them exactly as all do have some moments that I enjoy and have a role to play in the story. But even at their very best, I am decidedly "meh" about them compared to the others. Particularly Mateo. (I recently made a post about what I see as pretty clear writer's bias/favoritism toward him and why it aggravates me).
9. Favourite season and why?
It's difficult to say, since I think each of the seasons have their own particular strengths and weaknesses.
S1 is most consistent on an episode-by-episode level. At this point, the show is mostly filler/world-building but its much less glaring and disruptive here than in the later seasons. Also "Island of Youth" and "King of the Carnaval" have my whole heart.
S2 is best at pacing and balancing filler with the main plot. Shuriki is also by far the best villain on the show, and while there's still a lot of missed opportunities with that (which I'll get into at the next question), her return and defeat are handled reasonably well. I also feel that S2 has the best Dia de los Muertos episode (" The Jewel of Maru") and the best holiday episode ("Snow Place Like Home"). That being said, S2 is particularly aggravating to me as an Estefan since he does pretty much nothing of substance for an entire season--with the exception of an (admittedly great) cousin rap battle and a bit of (shared) focus in the Navidad episode.
S3 is probably my favorite and there is so much to love about it. the show finally gives Esteban the characterization and plot focus that he has deserved all along--and as a bonus, they gave him magic powers, a (reluctant and fortunately temporary) villain era, a redemption arc, a sparkly magical outfit( that pairs with Elena's) and an extremely stupid new hairdo to boot. I also love love love Elena's emotional magic (particularly as a parallel with Esteban's teleportation and just the aesthetic of her dress changing colors with her mood). I also love Victor and Carla redemption (even if I wish we could've seen more of them). In S3, we were introduced to Chloe, Antonia, Ixlan, and Rebecca who are some of my faves of the supporting characters. I love everything about "Dreamcatcher" and most of "The Magic Within" (except for Flo and the mood whiplash she brings with her) and "Coronation Day" as well.
But for all that is great about S3, there are some notable flaws as well. The most obvious of which is pacing. (Granted that this is probably unintentional and a lot of the problems are due to Disney airing things wildly out of order). We will go from some of the most devastating and emotionally exhausting episodes on the show to just super low-key filler episodes without any preamble and it's so frustrating. That being said, S2 did a much better job integrating the main plot even into filler episodes. (Ex: There was a little bit Victor and Carla shenanigans in "Royal Rivalry" and a few scenes of "Carla-as-Rita" even in the mostly filler science fair ep). It's also wildly funny to me how we will go through multiple S3 episodes without Esteban appearing or even being mentioned, yet the moment he does show up--either in person or conversation--he is accompanied by the affirmation that Elena is 110% incapable of being normal about him. It's like he either doesn't exist at all to her OR he is one of the only things that exists to her. There is absolutely no middle ground. It's hilarious.
I also have mixed feelings about Ash, Chatana, and the Four Shades of Awesome as villains. Chatana in particular seems underdeveloped and underused. While I mostly like Cahu as the final Big Bad, the other Shades seems kind of random and out of place, and I also think Cahu should've been introduced an episode or two earlier. Even if she doesn't appear, we could've learned that summoning her was Ash's plan and what she expects to accomplish. As well as the stakes of what they are risking by doing so.
16. Most ridiculous plot line?
The absolute nonsensical timeline/episode airing order throughout the whole show but especially in S3. Honestly, ridiculous is not at all the right word, but the plot arc--or at least plot element--that I find most aggravating is Esteban's plot during the S2 "Shuriki Returns" arc. Or more specifically, the complete and utter lack of Esteban plot during said arc. More than anyone else on the show except possibly Elena (and even that is debatable), Esteban's entire character has been shaped by 41 years of Shuriki's reign, coupled by his own guilt for enabling that reign in the first place and his lingering fear and trauma from the Dark Times in general.
As such the Shuriki returns arc should've been nearly as crucial to his character development as it was to Elena's. And yet...all we get is "The Right Thing to Do" and a few tiny little moments in "Song of the Sirenas" (him hiding behind Francisco on seeing Shuriki again and wanting to be rescued first from the tower). That's it. Three little moments, two of which are specifically played for laughs and all of which only really contribute to Esteban's character development if you really stop and think about them beyond the surface level.
Esteban uses his body as a shield multiple times to protect Elena from Ash (and later Cahu) in S3 and yet, he sees Shuriki and he immediately darts behind his grandfather for protection like a scared child. He literally does a song and dance to try to persuade (and then force) Elena to stay as far away from Shuriki as possible. He jumps the line to try be the first to be rescued from Shuriki and then his second thought is to protect the youngest and most vulnerable person in the room (Isabel) instead of himself. It's almost (sarcasm) as it he knows better than anyone exactly what truly horrendous things that Shuriki is capable of and wants to protect himself and his family from them.
I mean, I understand that the nature of this being a children's show discourages them from delving too much into Esteban's trauma and what exactly the Dark Times looked like. If they reminded the eight year olds watching that 41 years is an insanely long period of time to live alone without family, friends, or freedom, they would probably get so many angry letters from parents. Yet in the very first episode of the show, they just low-key reveal that Shuriki enslaved the noblins .
I don't think it would've been too much to have Esteban be like "Remember the noblins. Remember your parents. Remember the amulet. These are only a few examples of the terrible things Shuriki has done . I've seen them all firsthand and I've seen countless more equally nightmarish so I will not let you go after her now" before he breaks into his Hamilton audition piece.
Or even just there be a brief moment during the "Shuriki Returns" arc where someone is like "How are you holding up, Esteban? This must be so scary and stressful for you too/ you in particular." But no, this was apparently too much to ask for.
24. Favourite song from the show?
youtube
My favorite songs from the show are always the random ones with guest characters as opposed to the actually plot-important ones with main characters, lol. So my top 5 would probably be: "You Can't Catch Me," "A Little Bit More," (Val, my beloved) "More, More, More" (which is probably the most underrated song on the show imo), "You Want to Live Forever," and "The Gift of Night" and probably in that order.
If you held a gun to my head and told me I had to pick a more important song that is song by a series regular, it would probably be either "Something I Would Never Do" or "Let Love Light the Way."

For the ask game, Elena of Avalor or Tangled the Series?
Over a year ago, I would have said Tangled the Series, but now? Elena of Avalor all the way. During the end of season 3, I got back into Elena of Avalor and haven’t gotten out of it since. And after reading heavy critiques of Tangled the Series, I have come to realize just what a poorly written show it is, and just how awful a lot of the characters actually are.
Tangled the Series is a show that claims and tries to act like it is a mature, complex show, but when you look deeper into it, you’ll see that it’s just sloppy writing and plot mismanagement. Elena of Avalor, on the other hand, has a meaningful, emotional plot. While written for a young audience, actually manages to touch upon some mature topics regarding family and trauma in a realistic way, making it interesting for adults too.
I do not need to explain that Elena ten times the person and ruler that Rapunzel will ever be. I know that I have touched upon this in other posts before, but not only is Elena a better person and friend than Rapunzel, but she is allowed to be human and fallible. She’s allowed to make mistakes, to make decisions that people and the audience don’t necessarily agree with and get called out for it. I know that the main reason for this is because Elena isn’t an official Disney Princess whereas Rapunzel is, meaning that there are rules and regulations to how Rapunzel is written that don’t apply to Elena.
The antagonists are better too. It doesn’t matter whether you’re talking about reformed antagonists such as Victor and Carla, or unreformed antagonists like Shuriki. All of the villains/antagonists from Elena of Avalor have much better development than Cassandra. They have actual reasons that motivate the things they do, and have developed plans and schemes to achieve their goals. Cassandra has none of this. She was just a violent imbecile who hurt people because she felt like it at the moment, and took genuine pleasure in doing so.
The closest thing she had to a “motivation” was that Gothel “chose” Rapunzel over her, as if it was some sort of competition. Cassandra blamed Rapunzel, an abuse victim who was ripped away from her parents and isolated from the world during the most important important years of her life, for her own kidnapping. Oh, and she gets a quick, forced redemption during the last few minutes of the series finale.
They tried to pull a fast one by making the big bad, Zhan Tiri, female. However, it was clear that she didn’t start out as a female villain, given that one of her minions referred to him with a male pronoun. She wasn’t even important anyways. She only existed to serve as a scapegoat for Cassandra because the executive producer did not want Cassandra to be held accountable for her own actions.
Of course, people are probably thinking “what about Varian”? Yes, Varian is a brilliant reformed villain who I will forever love. He was a brilliant villain and his redemption was wonderful. However, there is one problem: He was a mistake.
The creator of the show never intended us to sympathize with Varian. Varian was to be the strawman. You can clearly see by the way he was depicted in “Secret of Sundrop”, that we were meant to see Varian as a psychotic, mad scientist. Think of the way that Rapunzel calls him an “unstable alchemist.” We were never meant to sympathize with the fourteen year old who was abused by the Royal family and lost his only parent.
The reason for all these disturbing moral breaches was finally revealed to us this August. As everyone in the Tangled the Series now knows, Chris Sonnenburg was hired by the Daily Wire, run by Ben Shapiro, an ultra right conservative. This tells us everything that we need to know about Chris Sonnenburg. While we always knew he was bad, this confirms that he is an ultra Wright conservative that sympathizes and supports tyrants just like King Fredric. He supports the new, evil version of the GOP ( Also known as The Republican Party) that is destroying my country.
I do not like to get politics involved when it comes to creative decisions that I disagree with. Yet knowing what we know: the misogyny, racism, Rapunzel’s characterization, the treatment of Varian, sympathy towards Fredric, the justification of the persecution of a child, everything makes sense. Chris Sonnenburg truly believes that authoritarians are “good” because they are “the authority” and those young people who haven’t accepted the authority and are fighting against them (Varian) are the bad guys. Chris Sonnenburg is for “Law and Order”, just like his party.
This is why Elena of Avalor is better than Tangled the Series. It was written by a person with good moral values who understands human decency. And wanted to write a Princess protagonist and show that upheld those values. Whereas Tangled the Series was written by a narcissistic member of the ultra Wright. An ugly party that spreads lies based on fear and hate. The party of Authoritarianism and Fascism.

Again back to my last EOA post, and a comment I saw on a repost of it, I am 1000000% on board with the idea of the whole plot of Elena of Avalor, and some of the things in it, being a whole metaphor for Elena trying to keep herself from being driven to insanity aka becoming an evil dictator. Based on the personal research I’ve done, and connecting the dots to Elena’s character, I’ve noticed some key things in the show that sort of represent many “symptoms” of what a “clinically insane” person goes through.
Elena witnessed her own parents death right in front of her eyes. This alone should be traumatizing enough, but not even like 5 minutes later, Shuriki blasts her, but the amulet pulled her inside of it to save her. (Or at least, I like to think she did die, but her soul was sucked into the amulet, thus her possessing it, Five Nights At Freddy’s style). Elena is now sitting in the amulet, in what I think was a sort of state like Locked In Syndrome? Because when she did get out the amulet in Secret Of Avalor, she looked like she was sleeping, AND she forgot how to walk, hell even move around. So I think since she was in there for so long, she started “fusing” with the amulet, thus falling into a sort of coma, but still highly aware of whats going on around her + outside the amulet, but thats besides my point. She spends 40+ years, isolated from the world, with no one to talk to, no source of brain stimulation, no form of movement, just NOTHING. Shes trapped in a void. (*Void by Melanie Martinez starts playing*). Now looking at irl facts, there is no absolute way Elena didnt go insane in the amulet.
Looking at neuroscience, and the world of EOA, we can see the way Elena interacts with the world, and apply those statistics to Elena herself. In an article from The Royal Society Publishing, The Article titled “Perceived Social Isolation, Evolutionary Fitness and Health Outcomes: a LifeSpan Approach.” Written by Louise C. Hawkley, and John P. Capitanio states: “A sampling of recent studies shows that socially isolated housing of various social animal species at various stages of life and for various durations results in altered behaviour (e.g. anxious, depression-like, aggressive, passive, cognition/memory), physiology (e.g. changes in basal or stress–reactive corticosterone, blood pressure, inflammation, immune responses, hippocampal function) and mortality (e.g. post-stroke outcomes)” In the show, we can see Elena suffer through majority of these affects. Especially when it comes to her cognitive ability and critical thinking skills. We see her struggle hard in the show to solve problems, regarding the kingdom, and when communicating with other people.
I will also talk about the fact Elena can see ghosts, and Spirit Guides. I know, she has this power because “The amulet gave it to her.” But think of it this way: The amulet; her trauma, and Elena had to face “the trauma” for a LOOOOONG period of time. Another key factor when it comes to isolation, hallucinations. An Israeli adventurer/author Yossi Ghinsberg spent 3 weeks stranded in the Amazon rainforest (they actually made a movie about him‼️) Ghinsberg stated, due to him being isolated from society without any social contact/interaction, he experienced hallucinations. So what if metaphorically, Elena seeing the Spirit Guides, and ghosts, are her having hallucinations from spending 41 years away from society?
Elena’s dress. That goddamn dress. Its mentioned earlier that isolation can affect the brain’s cognitive abilities, and emotional health. So you basically would have trouble regulating your emotions, and your emotions would be all over the place. RING ANY BELLSSSSS⁉️⁉️⁉️⁉️ Her magic dress is a metaphor for her decline in her cognitive skills.
I now conclude my essay on how crazy I am about this damn kids show. I love Elena sm shes such a complicated character and I LOVE ITTTTTTTTT

Ok I’m kinda new to the EoA show and stuff so after I watched it and. How did Victor end up with ash? He’s so much better than her. She’s trash. Like what did he ever see in her? Did I miss something?
You’re tough XD
Alright, I probably should bring up the fact that Victor met Ash after he and Esteban betrayed the royal family, so he’s not a saint either.
I admit I’m a bit confused with Victor’s life timeline, but I believe he met Ash after he was banished from Avalor, and he certainly was bitter because of the injustice he had to face (Esteban stayed in Avalor and was Shuriki’s right hand, whereas Victor wasn’t that lucky)
Both Ash and Victor wanted to be malvagos. Ash said he would train Victor after she finished her own training but eventually disappeared for five years.
The only difference between them is that Victor was willing to turn away from the dark path in order to make his daughter happy. Ash also loves Carla. But she always prioritized power.
Before Victor realized he was putting Carla in danger because of the dark pursuits, he wasn’t really different from Ash. He was grudge holding and revengeful, and basically the only thing that softens the edges of his character (before his redemption) is his love to Carla. He always loved her even as “a villain.”
So, yeah, I believe Victor and Ash deserved each other. In the beginning of their journey at least.
