Our good friend Jonathan Harker is getting ready to leave for his business trip, Mina Murray is picking out a new journal, Lucy Westenra is charming a gaggle of smitten suitors, Abraham van Helsing is wrapping up his lectures, and Castle Dracula is prepping the guest room for a very long stay.

Which must mean that Dracula Season is here again!

‘Dracula Season’ being a catchall term for the voracious reading, memeing, writing, illustrating, analyzing, and general fun-having that’s ensued since Matt Kirkland’s project, Dracula Daily, caught on with us back in 2022. The Substack had already been running before then, but it sparked a conflagration as time went on and readers old and new to Bram Stoker’s Dracula—the actual novel, not Coppola’s fanfiction—devoured it in a way that scratched an itch none of us knew we had. Stoker wrote the book in epistolary fashion, clumping sections together as needed for the pacing without perfect adherence to chronological order. Matt went ahead and put all the events in order and proceeded to set up a lovely chain of emails that delivered entries on those correlating dates.

This style of organization and pacing turned out to not only make the virtual book club that much easier to engage with, but left space in-between to stew on the story and relate with the characters themselves. Every day of waiting in the book feels weightier when you have to pace and sweat and worry in tandem with poor Jonathan trapped in the castle or Lucy wasting away or Mina running out the clock before she loses the fight for her own humanity. And while we sat with the story or the lulls between Dracula Seasons, some of us found ourselves craving more of that ghastly gothic horror goodness to the point that we figured:

“Well. Why don’t I make something?”

And then we did! Tons of creative works have been churned out in the wake of Dracula Daily’s high. I figured that while we’ve still got a bit of time to wait for May 3rd, we should check out all this new stuff in the meantime. (Plus a handful of neat stuff that just clicks with the Dracula itch overall.)

So, in the interest of Dracula Season pregaming, let’s take a look at…

FICTION

Blood of My Blood – A recent addition to the Dracula Bad Ending AU pile, and definitely one of the most harrowing and addictive group-produced narratives I’ve ever come across, Blood of My Blood is the dramatically gothic currently-WIP work of @ibrithir-was-here and @animate-mush’s devious design. Give or take a heap of other fascinated folks (hello!) adding ideas to put more Horror into the Horrors that our cast has to face. The premise:

The Transylvanian climax went fatally sour and the Harkers were forced to shelter with Dracula himself, including their half-vampire son, Quincey. Cut to two decades later, and Quincey finds himself out in modern London, smitten with Lu, adopted daughter of Arthur and Jack, and diving into certain bloodstained old documents that detail the real history of how his parents came to live in the castle. Said revelations coming not a moment too soon, as a storm is coming for him straight from the Carpathians…

Dracula Daily Sketch Collection – An array of illustrations that captures every entry beat by beat, the Dracula Daily Sketch Collection by Georgia Cook, alias @georgiacooked was dished out over the course of the last Dracula Season. Some of the most fun character designs out there.

Fanfiction Spotlight: BlueCatWriter – With a whopping 99 works devoted to the novel Dracula (so far, the number may have gone up since I blinked), @bluecatwriter is one of the most prolific and talented fanfiction scribblers out there. Romances, nightmares, and overlaps between the two seem to crop up the most, give or take a crossover. Seems fitting that those blue paw prints have contributed to BoMB too.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlefolk – An ongoing comic in which all your favorite characters from the Classics section get together and tackle some perils ranging from the mundane to the monstrous. Started by the amazing @mayhemchicken and posted on @lxgentlefolkcomic, this series is a love letter to beloved Victorian era lit, with a spotlight on the two couples leading the League. Namely, the Harkers, ala Dracula, and the Nortons, ala Sherlock Holmes,’ “A Scandal in Bohemia.” Mina and Irene are the driving investigative and steering forces here, and still deeply in love with their likewise-infatuated husbands, just like in their canons! What a concept! Alan.

Without spoiling the full character list, just know there are going to be a ton of familiar faces roaming around before you finish reading the first arc. Said arc having conveniently wrapped up just a few days ago! Give the comic and its bonus silliness a look if you’re in the mood for a new comfort-adventure epic.

Re: Dracula – Probably the most well-known and incredible thing to come out of the initial Dracula Daily wave. This podcast is a full audio drama that follows the same format as the Substack, with episodes coming out in time with the entries themselves. And it has an unfairly cool soundtrack. They have a Tumblr with @re-dracula, a site and a Patreon to check out before the series kicks up again on May 3rd. (Also, keep an eye out for their next work, an audio drama in the same style with Carmilla.)

The Soldier and the Solicitor – Another treat from @ibrithir-was-here, this one involves a bit of time travel trouble. Quincey Harker has stumbled out of World War I and into the same dark forest where his father once fled for his life…then runs into the man himself, on that same night. Jonathan Harker, young and starved and lost, who has no choice but to trust this stranger while the Weird Sisters are at his heels…despite said stranger having no shadow. It’s a tasty emotional trek, already complete on Tumblr, but now it’s turning into a Webtoon. While Ibrithir is juggling a number of other stories, she’ll be redrawing spruced up versions of the comic and adding a few new scenes as things unfold.

Substack Stack – You know what’s better than one emailed-out public domain book club? A mountain of them. Just. So, so many of them. You’ll see that a lot of these are finished, but some are still ticking along. Either way, they’re all great picks if you’re craving some more old school lit to fill the void between undead emails.

…The Beetle Weekly – The Beetle (NOTE: Do Not Read This.)

The Vampyres – A novella I finally wrenched through the gears of self-publication as of March this year. Starring a petite but powerful paranormal cast, The Vampyres, centers on an unscrupulous undead fellow who finds that the revenants of the world are being mowed down by an entity known only as ‘Quinn Morse.’ Between trying to save his neck and figure out where the shadowy bastard came from, the Vampyre in question crosses paths with a new paramour and handy human shield in the form of a grieving Good Samaritan. He’s even polite enough to invite the Vampyre into his home while he’s in dire straits! Surely this will end well. All the info is available here and a little author site is over here.

What Manner of Man – This is the one made for everyone who started out hoping there’d be a real love story with our good friend Jonathan Harker and the Count when he was at his most charismatic. Where that sea of wonders dried up into a mire of horror, What Manner of Man by @stjohnstarling keeps things firmly on the romantic tracks. This Substack stars the letter-writing priest Father Victor E. Ardelian as he finds himself meeting with one enigmatic Lord Alistair Vane. It isn’t long before interest turns into intrigue and intrigue into undead intimacies.

The entire novel has been completed—along with multiple epilogues in the author’s Patreon, allowing readers to choose for themselves just how the uncanny romance plays out in the end—and the Substack now has a number of other gothic goodies piling up in the meantime.

NONFICTION

Dracula Daily: A Unique Reading Experience: This one comes courtesy of @realwomenofgaming. It’s a short and sweet piece that amounts to a fun snapshot of the entire Dracula Daily ride. A cozy couple-minute read.

‘Dracula Daily’ is the One Substack You Need a Subscription To: Features my favorite Matt Kirkland interview. @mattkirkland, if you’re still floating around on here, thank you for dispatching our vampire newsletter again this year.

Dracula Daily is Tumblr’s hottest new book club: Alright, the ‘new’ part is worn out by now, but this one is still a delightful article to swing back around to. Two years on, this Polygon piece is a time capsule of those early months when people outside our bookworm bubble realized we were all happily receiving letters from our favorite classic gothic horror blorbos.

“How Mina Murray Became Dracula’s Girlfriend” – Princess Weekes, if you ever read this, thank you, thank you, thank you. I am sending oceans of love and millions of rewatches to your video essay. If you haven’t seen it yet, “How Mina Murray Became Dracula’s Girlfriend” is one of the most refreshing and well-made breakdowns of both the title subject and numerous other issues that have proliferated in the public view of Dracula’s cast and plot as adaptations endlessly warp or outright bastardize the actual novel. An incredibly cathartic watch.

Literary play gone viral: delight, intertextuality, and challenges to normative interpretations through the digital serialization of Dracula: A mouthful of a title for an even more elaborate article about the Dracula Daily phenomenon. This one is a full-on study that analyzes just what happened within the big bloodsucker book club surge and how its ‘wandering reading practices’ enriched the experience for participants.

“The Undying Undead: An analysis of the Dracula Daily community for a theory of online community formation and interaction” – We have a thesis on here! Look at that! @sirangelothebestest’s MA thesis used our vampiric book club as the bones for a massive brick of an academic piece that definitely deserves a look.

…And I think I’ll go ahead and cap things here.

This isn’t everything I got recommended, but if I had squashed all of it in here, I think folks’ eyes would start to fall out of their head. I hope you can find something cool to comb through here. Or, if there’s something great I overlooked, tack it onto the list! We’ve got just two weeks to go until we’re off with Mr. Harker. Let’s enjoy our respite before those castle doors close behind us.

Because these two need some serious help fighting demons and figuring out that they are not just friends.

Action, drama, fantasy, a dash of romance. I'm a creator of worlds (God complex, much?) and also a destroyer of them (Just like a God lol).

I lean towards horror and gore sometimes. However, I reserve those writings for myself, fearing they won't have the same appeal as my other WIPs.

Q: What's your current WIP about?

The short version, though? A lost girl, aching for normalcy, only for life to thrust her into the arms of an alien planet and people who insist she's destined for more than just 'being normal'.

Long and rambling answer under the cut.

Honestly, I find it humbling that anybody would be even slightly interested in stuff I’m working on.

I think of myself as a gnome humbly tapping away on some little trinket with a teensy hammer until it’s thoroughly beaten outta shape and is completely unrecognisable, at which point I proudly hold it up by the light of my guttering candle, and say aloud to no one in particular: “ah. art!”

Now, anon, you ask about my current works in progress.

Sure.

Here they are:

Apologies for the following paragraphs which all start with “I”. 🙇‍♂️

I’m going to lean on something I saw On Here a while ago about textile artists distinguishing between WIPs and UFOs – i.e., Works In Progress vs. Unfinished Objects. At any one point I have a few WIPs bouncing around the ol’ word processor, but – are they WIPs, really? Or are they just UFOs? If a WIP is something I’m actively working on, it’s probably only ever one WIP at a time, with a long and melancholy conga-line of UFOs bringing up the rear.

I am not a diligent scribbler. Often I don’t actively work on a piece until and unless I have no option (some self-imposed deadline approaches, or a prompt from a reader reminds me people are reading stuff). I will work on something feverishly for days or weeks, then set it aside, and not think about it for months or years.

I generally don’t enjoy talking about unpublished stuff because none of it is “done” or “good”, so in a nod to your question, no, I don’t like talking about them. However, I also don’t think that is the sort of reply you wanted, so please find below a poetically veiled and somewhat unhelpful list of some current UFOs, none of which could defensibly be classed as WIPs today.

I’m going to assume that you’re either only or principally interested in my FENCE Comic fan-fiction, because that is – basically without exception – all that I’ve published recently which is (a) still accessible, and (b) which is of any decent length.

So here is (pretty well verbatim) the way I think about three of my longer/larger FENCE Comic UFOs:

UFO 1: 🏳️‍🌈💝Hallmark (gay), now with added gay angst (gay).

UFO 2:🫂🙇‍♂️Very long story gets even longer.

UFO 3:⏳🎣Further back in time, because I damn well said so.

(One shots, drabbles and ficlets/snippets/vignettes).

2. What’s your total AO3 word count?

280,528 (as of 1st Nov, 2023)

3. What fandoms do you write for?

Korean dramas “fandoms”.

“Sohn: The Guest”, “Voice”, “Glitch”, “Beyond Evil” and “A Time Called You” etc so far. Except for TG and “Voice”, I don’t have more than one work in the other “fandoms”.

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

1. To Be a Part of You (Kang Kwon Joo/Mo Tae Gu) - Collection of related, smutty one shots.

2. Gossip (Kang Gil Young/Choi Yoon/Yoon Hwa Pyeong) - Mini one shot. There is mention of children.

3. Dying Just to Feel You by My Side (KKJ/MTG) - The starting story for the series ‘To Be A Part of You’ is in. Literal relationship negotiations (with a stalker).

4. Fly Me to The Moon (Hong Ji Hyo/Heo Bo Ra) - Collection of 100-word drabbles for this pair of chaotic, gorgeous cuties.

5. Brass Blossoms (KKJ/MTG) - Collection of 100-word drabbles.

5. Do you respond to comments? Why? Why not?

I always do.

I get very little interaction and try to respond to anyone kind enough to leave a comment (except for trolling ones).

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?.

None. Am a HE/A-supremacist. I also can’t do angst, mostly due to skill issues.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

All are relatively happy.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

So far, only one. On a fic for a rare pair in a relatively larger fandom. It was a mild “hate” comment(s) and was more hilarious to me than anything.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Yes. All kinds, but mostly the vanilla flavoured ones, and not descriptively explicit. Even the “dub-con” and CNC ones are tepid.

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?

Yes. Not crazy as much as I had lots of fun with other crack pairing(s) to fawn over.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I know of. I mostly write rare pairs in minuscule, obscure fandoms. Nothing worth stealing.

Stealing anything fan work is abhorrent, however, so please don’t.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

No. But I have translated a fic to English - from an amazing writer - for one of the rare pairs I write for.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

No.

14. What’s your all time favourite ship?

Kang Gil Young/Choi Yoon.

I have too many favourites - from other fandoms, i.e., HaruMichi, Everlark, Mileven, Silverparry, Reylo, Romanogers, Nevmione etc, and all are special and unique to me - to put one at the top, but as one I write for (and visuals wise), KGY/CY is undoubtedly my favourite.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

You Are Not Allowed series. It is left as “completed” because I am just a snippet/single scene/one shot scribbler, but there is supposed to be an endgame there that I doubt I will ever write for again, though the ending is there in my mind.

16. What are your writing strengths?

Boringly straightforward and dry. It is not a strength but one I have to live with.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Plot! Dialogue! Prose. Description of scenes, objects, characters. Well, basically everything.

I don’t have any pretensions I can write (or ever had any aspirations for writing), but am desperate to have my rare pairs occupy my mind for longer while I fixate on them, so… and scribbling word vomit is quite fun, so I scribble whenever my rare pairs visit me.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

Haven’t done it.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Sohn: The Guest.

20. Favourite fics you’ve written?

A Verb in Perfect View

Self-hype WIP Wednesday! I was tagged by @hangon-silvergirl to share a snippet from one of my WIPs.

I'm a day late, but here is a bit from "Two for One," the next chapter in Man to Man, my series which follows Eddie dealing with several of the men (and boys) in his life. In this part, Eddie's doing some grocery shopping and runs into one of the Cunninghams.

He parked in front of the hair care section and rested an elbow on the cart’s handle as he took in the colorful wall of shampoo, conditioner, gel, creme, mousse, and spray—endless choices to make your hair as big as possible, not that Eddie had ever needed much help in that department. It was possible, hair-wise, that he was living in the greatest era known to metalkind, and he’d genetically lucked into the perfect ‘do for this cultural moment. People were frying their hair with perms to get the look he got for free.

Absently twirling his mom’s class ring around his finger, he stepped closer to the shelves to reach for a bottle of Chrissy’s dark pink Suave Strawberry Essence shampoo…and hey, Piggly Wiggly was having a two-for-one sale, so he grabbed a second one for the cart.

Now came the more difficult task: choosing products for his unruly mane.

Last night after the show, citing Eddie’s impending nuptials to Chrissy, Steve “The Hair” Harrington had drunkenly impressed upon his friend the importance of using the right shampoo–and conditioner, for Pete’s sake!—for his curls, and had twiddled a lock of Eddie’s hair as he slurred You’re in need of moisture, which had made Eddie cringe and guffaw at the same time, a rollercoaster he was in no hurry to experience again. Nevertheless, the expert had made the point that Eddie’s all-in-one go-tos like Pert or Head & Shoulders were probably not meant for hair such as his. (Or Nancy’s, the drunken mess had repeatedly declared, imperiously wagging a finger—not that his ex or her boyfriend, who were then arguing quietly but obviously over by the bar, were close enough to hear that particular proclamation.)

Eddie looked left and right, but no barbers magically appeared down either end of the aisle; so he began the arduous task of scanning the small print beneath brand names for words like curly and dry and, because the hair god had spoken thus, moisture.

Shit. There were so many products. How was he supposed to choose the right ones? How dare Big Boy Harrington not have the same hair type as his? What gave Harrington the right to make Eddie question twenty good years of frizz?

The wedding, that was what. A low blow, and Harrington had been drunk enough to throw that punch, and goddammit, it had landed. Hair care. Fuck.

Okay, Eddie could do this. He inhaled and exhaled, interlacing his fingers and stretching his palms forward to crack his knuckles. He looked in desperation down the aisle again…

And saw Caleb Cunningham.

Chrissy’s brother stood stock still a few steps into the aisle as though he’d frozen in place when he spotted Eddie. His shock of thick red hair was longer than it’d been the last time Eddie saw him at graduation, though the length probably wouldn’t have turned any heads at their church. He looked taller, too, but that was thirteen-year-olds for you. In a light blue polo, khaki shorts, and docksiders, the handsome teen could’ve been the poster boy for any number of prep schools. A magazine dangled from one hand. The other rose tentatively in greeting.

Eddie waved back.

Caleb hesitated, then seemed to make a decision. He rolled up the magazine and started toward Eddie, still turning the glossy paper nervously in both hands as he drew near.

“Hey, Eddie,” he said in that weird, gravelly way of boys whose voices were changing.

2022 Year-End Fic Review

1. What is your AO3 account?

2. How many words did you write total in 2022?

106,067, including Let’s Start the New Year Right, which was completed on Dec. 31 but not published till Jan. 1. I’m kind of blown away by this word count, since I didn’t write anything except an original short story prior to the very end of July, coming off of a 2.5-year writing drought.

3. How many fics did you publish in 2022? How many multichapters vs oneshots?

1 multichaptered fic and 5 one-shots (plus a couple 5-sentence fics on tumblr)

4. What was your longest fic? Your shortest fic?

Longest: Guidance Counseling (89,403 words and counting)

Shortest: Better Angels (14,030 words)

5. What was your most popular fic? Your least popular fic?

Most: Guidance Counseling, I guess? IDK how to compare WIPs and one-shots

Least: Let’s Start the New Year Right

6. What fic didn’t perform as well as you thought it would?

I thought Let’s Start the New Year Right would be more popular since it was the sequel to Meet Me Under the Mistletoe, which did well, but I think people missed it on Jan 1 and then it got buried in the Hellcheer tags.

7. What fic performed way better than you thought it would?

Meet Me Under the Mistletoe surprised me by getting very little attention the day I posted it, then avalanching over the next few days. I also didn’t think it was as good a fic as May All Your Christmases Be Spite, so I was surprised they pretty much tied!

8. What was your favorite fic you wrote from 2022?

Other than Guidance Counseling, I just loved writing Eddie’s holiday newsletter (okay, ngl, Laura Cunningham’s, too) in May All Your Christmases Be Spite.

9. What was your favorite fic that somebody else wrote in 2022?

I loved so many Hellcheer fics in 2022! My favorites are probably Chrissy and Eddie’s Infinite Mixtape by @little-scribblers-heart, Someone Reaching Back for Me by @enoughtotemptme and Marigold by @hangon-silvergirl
