Most Anticipated Reads in April
It’s almost but not quite April yet, which means it’s time for me to totally ignore the books I should be reading from March and look ahead to my most anticipated April reads. Here’s what’s on my list...
A Whole Song and Dance by Sarvenaz Tash [Out 4/4/23!]
Nasrin Mahdavi is a Broadway triple threat—but she’s living a double life. A freshman in NYU’s prestigious musical theater program, Nasrin spends her days prepping for auditions, sweating through dance classes, and belting her heart out for the viral streaming show she’s been cast in. But on calls with her maman and baba, she’s their jigar talah, the golden child who put her theater dreams aside to follow in their entrepreneurial footsteps as a business major. At least her whole life isn’t a lie—she is taking a single business course. Except she’s kind of failing it. Cue jazz hands? Nasrin needs to bring her grade up fast if she’s going to keep her parents in the dark, so she grudgingly signs up for tutoring with the infuriatingly smug and annoyingly attractive Max. And yet...as the semester rushes by, the sparks of anger that first flew between them start to turn into a very different kind of spark. The kind she definitely does not have time for. Except when Nasrin’s charming though devious cousin takes an interest in Max too, Nasrin has to figure out exactly what has been an act—and what’s for real. Can Nasrin decide what—and who—is truly worth fighting for, and find a way to step into the spotlight as her full self?
Firebird by Sunmi [Out 4/4/23!]
Sunmi's gorgeous two-color teen graphic novel debut examines the power of resilience and reinvention, following the lives of Caroline and Kim, two queer, Asian American teenagers growing up in the suburbs of the San Francisco Bay Area, as they forge an unexpected connection. Caroline Kim is feeling the weight of sophomore year. When she starts tutoring infamous senior Kimberly Park-Ocampo--a charismatic lesbian, friend to rich kids and punks alike--Caroline is flustered... but intrigued. Their friendship kindles and before they know it, the two are sneaking out for late-night drives, bonding beneath the stars over music, dreams, and a shared desire of getting away from it all. A connection begins to smolder... but will feelings of guilt and the mounting pressure of life outside of these adventures extinguish their spark before it catches fire?
Throwback by Maurene Goo [Out 4/11/2023!]
Back to the Future meets The Joy Luck Club in this YA contemporary romance about a Korean American girl sent back to the ’90s to (reluctantly) help her teenage mom win Homecoming Queen. Being a first-generation Asian American immigrant is hard. You know what’s harder? Being the daughter of one. Samantha Kang has never gotten along with her mother, Priscilla—and has never understood her bougie-nightmare, John Hughes high school expectations. After a huge fight between them, Sam is desperate to move forward—but instead, finds herself thrown back. Way back. To her shock, Sam finds herself back in high school . . . in the ’90s . . . with a 17-year-old Priscilla. Now this Gen Z girl must try to fit into an analog world. She’s got the fashion down, but everything else is baffling. What is “microfiche”? What’s with the casual racism and misogyny? And why does it feel like Priscilla is someone she could actually be . . . friends with? Sam's blast to the past has her finding the right romance in the wrong time while questioning everything she thought she knew about her mom . . . and herself. Will Sam figure out what she needs to do to fix things for her mom so that she can go back to a time she understands? Brimming with heart and humor, Maurene Goo’s time-travel romance asks big questions about what exactly one inherits and loses in the immigrant experience.

The Geek's Guide to Unrequited Love | Book Review
The Geek’s Guide to Unrequited Love | Book Review
Graham has everything planned. He and Roxy will attend New York Comic Con and he’ll tell her that he’s madly in love with her. They’ve been creating their own comic together for years and share everything. They’d be perfect together and now they will be, right after meeting their favourite writer/artist of all time! Nothing could ever go wrong with this plan…right?
There is so much to love about…

The Geek’s Guide to Unrequited Love by Sarvenaz Tash ☆ ☆
I had heard of this book through Goodreads but it wasn’t until I saw it at my library that I decided to give it a shot.
Full honesty here: I kinda wish I hadn’t.
This story is about Graham, who is in love with his best friend/neighbor (Roxana) and has been harboring secret feelings for her for a long time. He decides he’s going to proclaim his undying love for her at New York Comic Con, along with a few surprises he has planned for the two of them.
Full (spoiler) review below the cut
Graham is whiny throughout the entire book, and it also gives off MAJOR “I’m a nice guy why doesn’t she love me??” vibes. The guy Roxana likes is a nice, kind, smart, British dork who has done absolutely nothing wrong to Graham except maybe win over Roxana’s heart.
Nevertheless, Graham hates him and takes the time to remind the reader of that fact every time he’s within eyeshot of the guy. The baseless insults got old after about three seconds. Some of them got quite creative, and it really made me mad because the guy has done nothing. wrong.
I get that it’s supposed to highlight his jealousy, but that’s plenty evident with every other action and comment Graham makes in the book.
Now these plans/surprises he has for Roxana? Every single one falls through. I won’t get into them but trust me, they’re bad.
Also, in a book about a Comic Con, you’d expect to have pop culture references, right? Sure. But I’m really not a fan of throwing in references just for the sake of having references. In my opinion, references should be able to stand alone as a joke even if the reader doesn’t understand them. Granted, I understood the references, but they left me rolling my eyes and groaning at how INYOURFACE they were, not to further the plot or contribute to the story….just there for the sake of making a reference.
I also didn’t particularly care for the writing style. It just wasn’t my cup of tea. For one thing, I got fed up with the portmanteaus Graham would make up that all started with the word “nerd” like “nerdvalache” or “nerditude” and things like that. It made me cringe….
I made up my mind about halfway through that if Roxana ended up with him in the end this book would be a total bust. His behavior toward her on the outside isn’t so problematic, it’s his thoughts and internal monologue that convinced me that she would be better off without him, maybe keeping five feet between them at all times.
He doesn’t end up with her in the end, thank goodness, and the ending of the book is not so bad, but by the time I made it through the story, I couldn’t wait for it to be over.
BUT I’m all for letting people enjoy the kinds of stories they enjoy - so if you think unrequited love at a comic con packed with cheesy pop culture references is your thing, go for it! Maybe you’ll end up liking it more than I did.

(via Wishlist Wednesday: Virtually Yours)
This is another YA contemporary set in college that is releasing in 2019. I think the concept sounds like it has the potential for lots of interesting  drama. I am not sure that I have read a book that features online dating . Looking forward to finding out more about this one!

Bluefanguy’s Book Thoughts
The Geek’s Guide to Unrequited Love by Sarvenaz Tash
Good day all and welcome to another edition of Bluefanguy’s Book Thoughts! Today’s book is The Geek’s Guide to Unrequited Love by Sarvenaz Tash.
Graham Posner has been in love with his best friend Roxy Afsari for years. When their favorite comic book creator is slated to appear at the upcoming New York Comic Con, Graham sees this as a way to confess his feeling to Roxy. The course of true love never runs smoothly though. Crazed fans, deals with friends, and worst of all: a guy who catches Roxy’s interest. Suddenly Graham’s plans are up in the air and he’ll have to step up if he ever wants to reveal his feelings to Roxy.
By the time this goes up, I will be at Houston Comicpalooza. What better weekend for a Book Thoughts post that mostly takes place at a pop culture convention. Reading this book reminded me of the dark side of fandom, like those who have too much fun criticizing other’s work, those who will just shut out another person for not being into the same things they are, and a rather significant in-book event known as “Nerdlam” which is the beginning of Graham’s troubles. The story does have its rather fun moments like when Roxy’s friend Felicia mentions a plus of conventions is the hot male cosplayers and when Graham thwarts a robbery with a rather well-known pop culture line. I thoroughly enjoyed Graham’s frustration over the guy Roxy meets at a speed dating, reminding me that the course of love never runs smoothly and sometimes it takes you to a place you never considered.
If you love books about fandoms, attempts to express love, and a lovable and determined protagonist, you just may love this book.
Thanks for reading! Likes, reblogs, comments, questions, and followings are all appreciated. Until next time.
Bluefanguy, out.

“Human connection, the capacity for love, what it meant to desire someone both physically and mentally—I didn’t want them quantified. The love I wanted for myself was a path I walked with someone, unsure of its destination, aware of its risks and the looming chance of heartbreak . . . but hopeful anyway.”
