Imbolc
Imbolc is celebrated from February 1st until sundown on February 2nd and signifies the beginning of spring in the Celtic calendar. Imbolc marks the halfway point between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox and is one of several Pagan festivals that highlight some aspect of winter and sunlight to herald the change of seasons.
The celebration of Imbolc dates to pre-Christian times and the earliest mentions in Irish literature are found in the 10th century. Poetry from that time connects the holiday to ewe’s milk, with the implication of purification. As this ritual stems from the breeding cycle of sheep and the beginning of lactation, Imbolc traditionally aligned with the first day of spring and the idea of rebirth. The most common explanation for the etymology of Imbolc is from the Old Irish i mbolc meaning 'in the belly' and refers to pregnant ewes at this time of year.
In Neolithic times, Imbolc celebrations honoured the Pagan goddess Brigid, who was invoked in fertility rites and was also the goddess of poetry, crafts, and healing. Brigid was worshipped by the Filidh, the Celtic poets and historians of ancient Ireland. Brigid is one of the most powerful Celtic gods and is the daughter of the Dagda, the oldest god in the Celtic pantheon of the Tuatha Dé Danann. Modern-day Pagans set up an Imbolc altar to celebrate Brigid with a corn husk doll, white flowers, a bowl of milk, and candles. A group gathering casts a circle and recites invocations to receive a blessing from Brigid.
Brigid was said to visit homes on the eve of the Imbolc festival. To receive her blessings, an effigy of the goddess was crafted from rushes and oats, clad in pieces of cloth and flowers, and put in a basket overnight, with gifts of food and drink. Brigid was evoked to protect homes and livestock and items of clothing were left outside for her to bless. On Imbolc, the effigy of Brigid, known as a Brídeóg or Biddy, was paraded around the community by girls and young women. Sometimes, a young girl took on the role of Brigid and went from house to house wearing a crown, and carrying a shield, both made from rushes.
Over the centuries, Brigid was adopted by Christianity as Saint Brigid to become one of Ireland’s three patron saints along with Saint Patrick and Saint Colmcille. Saint Brigid is said to have lived in the 6th century and founded the important monastery of Kildare. While there are many stories about her, there are few historical facts. In the 12th century, legend holds that the nuns in Kildare attended to a fire built in Saint Brigid’s honour. The fire had burned for 500 years and produced no ash, and only women were allowed in proximity of the fire.
Imbolc rituals still include burning lamps and lighting bonfires in tribute to Brigid, who is associated with both milk and fire. Although there is some debate that Saint Brigid was a separate historical figure who shares the same name as the Celtic goddess, many scholars maintain that they are the same person with the later saint based on the earlier Pagan deity. As with many Pagan traditions and festivals, the names and dates were often adopted by Christianity to make the new faith more acceptable.
Imbolc is also believed to be when the Cailleach, the divine hag of Gaelic tradition, gathers firewood for the rest of winter. If she wishes to make the winter last longer, the weather on Imbolc is bright and sunny, so she can gather plenty of firewood. However, if Imbolc is a day of bad weather, it means the Cailleach is asleep, and winter is almost over.
On February 1st, people display a Brigid’s cross woven from rushes gathered by rivers and ponds. Traditionally, the cross is set over doorways and windows to welcome Brigid and protect the home from any kind of harm. Brigid’s Day parades and “Biddy’s Day” festivals are still held in some towns around Ireland, and it is also traditional to visit a holy well, praying for good health while walking clockwise around the well.

What if Human!Au
Janus is the father of Virgil and Remus
Patton is the father of Logan and Roman
Logan and Roman are both adopted, as is Remus but Virgil is the bio son of Janus and unnamed ex. The foster house Roman and Remus were in refused to advertise them as siblings as Remus was a "problem child" and Roman was a "golden boy" so Patton and Janus had no idea they were seperating twins.
A lot more under the cut:
There's always music playing in Janus' house, every day he comes home and puts on a jazz or classical record on the old record player he got from an antique store. On relaxed days Janus will come home, put on a record, and read on his armchair with Virgil listening to the music on his lap and Remus drawing at his feet.
Patton makes sure there's always fresh pastries in the Hart household. There's never a limit to how much they can eat as long as they eat an actual meal along with it. Logan always offers to do the measurements and Roman doesn't let anyone else do the mixing. It's a good day when there's flour everywhere, at least one egg got dropped by Roman, and there's warm cookies on the cooling rack.
Logan talks and talks to Roman who writes and writes about what he's told and they excitedly present their work to Patton who is always chest-bursting proud no matter what. Roman and Logan only ever fight when they play together and Roman's ideas are too fanciful for Logan and Logan's ideas are too boring for Roman. Only Patton can settle those arguments by either distracting them with something else or saying "actually, that can work if you do this!"
Virgil is really reserved around Remus at first, clinging to Janus' leg whenever he was near, but then Remus showed him his drawings of monsters and demons and Virgil pointed out a spider and then they were best friends. One day Janus gets called to the school because Remus punched a kid because they were bullying Virgil for crying over a spider and Janus makes this big act of being disappointed and saying "I'll make sure he learns his lesson" for the principal when really he takes them both out for ice cream afterwards.
Janus takes Virgil out record shopping as he refines his music taste, buying him whatever records he wants. As a birthday present Janus and Remus buy and paint a record player for Virgil's room. Whenever Remus runs out of paint or pencils Janus takes him to all the art stores he can and buys like a year's worth of supplies. The best gift he ever got wasn't even for a special occasion, on a whim Virgil composed a playlist for one of Remus' smaller sketchbooks and Janus payed someone to press a vinyl of it with the cover art being the cover of the sketchbook. They have movie nights on an old projector of classic slasher films.
Patton makes days of things. Roman wants to see a play? They're going to the mall afterwards and maybe even going to the aquarium. Logan wants to see the meteor shower that night? They're watching documentaries about deep space objects and meteorites all day until it's time to star gaze. Unlike in the Lis household where the main love language is quality time the Harts excell in gift giving and acts of service. Logan got the box set for all of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's works and a poster of the observable universe on a random Tuesday and Saint Patrick's Day respectively. Roman comes home one day to see all of his scripts edited in eraseable ink and his favorite sweets on the kitchen table. Patton never gets tired of telling them stories at night, taking suggestions from both kids and expertly weaving a tale of magic and science and evolutionary pathways of dragons until both are asleep.
The kids meet in high school and Roman and Remus immediately have a bond. They don't recognize eachother as brothers yet but there's something there that they both feel. They write comics together and commonly argue about the plot and designs, but their relationship never really falters. Virgil attaches himself to Remus' side and because of that meets Logan. Their bond strikes much slower than the twins' but eventually Logan becomes the #1 person Virgil goes to when he's having a panic attack or anxious about something: whether it's talking him through excersices or just being present Virgil always thanks him with a song recommendation or a sneak peak of a song he's writing.
Janus comes home from work (defense attorney) to Remus' embellished tales of the four's escapades and Virgil listening to music, somehow hearing and correcting every time Remus tries to make Virgil look stupid. Occasionally they'll vent about a teacher that took away Remus' figdet toy because it was "distracting" or forced Virgil to present in front of the class. On those days Janus will make them their favorite foods and put on the special jazz record he only ever uses when it's been a tiring day or one of the kids had a nightmare. Janus doesn't hesitate when Virgil is having a bad anxiety day or Remus can't get gory explicit images out of his head to call them out of school with a forged doctor's note.
Patton works at an elementary school so Roman and Logan walk there after school and do homework in his classroom until school lets out. After Patton is able to leave Roman starts telling them an equally embellished story of the day with Logan's occasional correction when it starts getting too outlandish. On bad days where the students were rowdy and Roman got his notebook taken away for writing in class and Logan got picked on for taking slang literally they'll go home and bake whatever they have the ingredients for.
As the friendship goes on they start spending more and more time with eachother outside of school, Remus and Virgil taking the time that Janus is still at work to join Roman and Logan at the elementary school or the Hart kids visiting the Lis house to chill and listen to music. Janus and Patton never officially meet until it's 3 am and they're in the police station because the twins convinced the other two to jump a fence and Remus' sleeve got caught in the barbed wire and their combined yelling alerted someone walking their dog.
They get to talking more after that and notice some similarities in the twins when they were younger. While Remus used to talk about his "brother at the foster home" Roman would mumble in his sleep about "how unfair it is the knight has to save the dragon." Janus does some digging and finds out the truth. They discuss how best to tell them before eventually deciding on a conversation over a laid-back dinner.
It doesn't stay a laid-back dinner, as soon as they sit down Virgil immediately realizes something is up, which means Logan and Remus realize, which means Roman also knows. Logan asks what's wrong and Virgil just points to Janus: "the snake is gonna tell us something." Janus looks impressed and him and Patton tell them what they found out. Roman and Remus freak out and are split between being pissed they didn't realize before or ecstatic at finally reuniting.

so, like, my mom likes to present like a good parent, right? she takes us to church, is interested in our education, shows off our talents and brags about us. and she sent me cookies for valentines/saint patrick's days, and a ton of kitkats (they were my favorite when i was younger, guess I still like them now tho)
and it just makes me feel kind of bitter. because i get this care package from her and its like... she's not the WORST. some people would kill to have their moms send them hand made cookies. but her idea of being a good parent doesn't extend past this.
it doesn't extend to learning how to do our hair (which is different from straight, white hair), or keeping us safe from our older brothers attacks, or listening to us when we need her, or listening to us at all. it doesn't extend to her doing anything at all when she knew i was suicidal because "what was I supposed to do, you never left your room!"
it doesn't make her stop touching us when we ask, it doesn't make her leave us alone when we're vulnerable and say we need a moment to ourselves. it doesn't stop the entitlement over our bodies. It doesn't stop all the tiny little ways she fucked up our lives that are hard to even compile, because individually they don't usually sound that bad, but all together they are life ruining.
oh and of course it doesn't stop her from inviting my oldest brother over for my birthday party when she KNOW'S I'm terrified of him. and it doesn't stop her from lying about it when I asked her why he was here. (she said "he dropped by" and I said "he said you invited him" and she said "he misses you, say hi to him!")
but it makes it harder to complain, i guess, when i get gifts from her. cause i'm here eating her damn cookies, which are REALLY GOOD, and all I wanna do is talk about how much i hate her for it.

Hi, not sure if uve already done one like this, but for Saint Patrick's day I imagine 2 going all out and if the other two aren't wearing green, its tickles all around 🤭
I cant think of a sentence starter but I hope u like this idea !!
Lee!Peter1 lee!Peter3 ler!Peter2
Saint Patty's Day Tradition
Summary: See prompt above :)
(I know Saint Patrick's Day has passed, but this was so cute! Peter 2 totally would do this 😭 this was on the short side, but the prompt is still so sweet Anon ❤️ I loved it ❤️ Thank you and I hope you enjoy! :))
A squeal interrupted Peter 3's show. The middle Peter shot up as Peter 1 scrambled into the room. "Help me!"
"What's-AH!"
The youngest Peter jumped and hid behind Peter 3.
"What are you doing?"
"Hehe's afteher mehe!"
"Who?"
"Top of the morning to you laddies!"
Three looked up to see Two stepping into the living room.
And the middle Peter burst out laughing.
Peter 2 was decked out in a 'Kiss Me, I'm Irish' shirt, a pair of green pants and shoes, Irish flag socks, a giant green bow tie and matching glasses. Even his hair had been dyed green to complete the look.
"Someone's excited for Saint Patty's Day tomorrow," Three teased as he took a sip from his coffee.
"Ihits tohoday Three!"
Peter 3 almost spit out his coffee. "You're joking."
One shook his head.
For whatever reason Peter 3 had it in his head that tomorrow was the holiday. He even had an outfit picked out and everything. "You've got to be kidding me."
Peter 2 chuckled as he took a step forward. "Ahand guess whoho's not wearing greheen."
The middle Peter acted quickly. He plopped his coffee cup onto the table and turned. "Sorry Pete."
One's eyes widened as Three grabbed him. "Three!"
Peter 3 held his little brother out in front of him. "Take the child!"
"Nooo! Trahaitor!"
Two grinned as he scooped One into his arms. "Thanks for the gift."
One's eyes widened.
Peter 2 adjusted the youngest on one hip before turning back to Peter 3. "Buhut he's not the only ohone not wearing green."
The tallest Peter scooted back across the couch. "No! No! No! I gahave yohou a gift! Wehere gohood!"
The oldest Peter crawled closer. "Here comes the tickle monster."
A squeak left Three's mouth as he brought his knees to his chest.
"Aww." The oldest turned to Peter 1. "Look at how cute you two are."
The youngest Peter hid behind his hands.
Meanwhile, Peter 2 grabbed Three's ankle and yanked him forward.
"Ah!"
Once the middle Peter was on his back, Two readjusted so he was sitting under the tallest Peter's legs. He pulled Peter 1 next to him. "Well, well, well, what have we here?"
One stayed hidden behind his hands while Three turtled into his shoulders.
"Awww." Peter 2 dug into both of his brothers' tummie. "Whose my wittwe bashfuw babies? Youw awre! Yes youw awre!"
The simultaneous squeals were adorable. While Peter 3 melted into a puddle of giggles, One turned into a squirming ball of squeals.
"Yohou two need to stop being soho cute ohor Ihim going to have to eheat yohou both."
"NO!"
Two turned to the youngest. "Noho?"
"Dohon't eheat mehe!" A snort slipped out. "Threhee's sweeteher!"
"Don't yohou dahare throhow me undeher the buhus!" Three kicked at the youngest.
The youngest snorted again. "Yohou dihid ihit to mehe!"
Two interrupted the bickering. "That's it! I warned you two!"
Peter 2 pulled both him and the other two to the floor. He placed the two side by side. "Now I have to eat you both up."
"NO!"
"Twoho!"
"I didn't make the rules. Just agreed to them."
Peter 3 lifted One's shirt. "Get hihim!"
"Threhee!"
"Ihits fuhun!"
Two lifted Peter 3's shirt. "Ahand now we all get to have fuhun."
The next sound to fill the room was squeals as Peter 2 rotated nuzzling into each of his brother's tummies. He nuzzled, nibbled, kissed and berried every inch of skin. They both cackled, squealed, and squirmed as he did.
Two melted at each of them. "You guys are too cute for your own good."
Both brothers blushed.
The oldest Peter cooed as he scooted forward to pepper kisses into both faces and necks. While he did, Two was wrapped into a hug by two sets of arms.
The oldest chuckled. "Did you enjoy Saint Patrick's Day?"
"Duhude yohoure ehevihil!" Three exclaimed. "Buhut yes!"
"I take that as a compliment." Peter 2 turned to the youngest. "Petey?"
One giggled. "Ihit wahas greheat!"
"Awwahaw." Two ruffled the youngest's hair.
"But we're so getting you bahack lahater!" Peter 3 pushed his older brother.
Two caught his hands with his. "Wehell see."
While Two was grappling with the middle Peter, Peter 1 slipped forward. He snagged the oldest's glasses before running off.
"Hey!"
"Tryhy ahand catch me!"
Two hurried after him. "Get bahack here you!"
Soon after, Peter 3 joined the chase and the three Peters were off on another adventure.

Game of thrones calls birthdays "namedays" was there a real world equivalent?? like something we'd call birthdays before they became birthdays??
I have no idea if this makes sense 🤣🤣 I'm sorry
In Christian tradition (mainly Catholic and Orthodox denomination), the name day was the day that was associated with your baptismal name, which was usually the name of a Saint. Say if you were Patrick, your nameday would be St Patrick's Day. They were seperate celebrations but in the same spirit as a birthday, with gift giving.

Sunny, Arianna and Molly are having three different but equally terrible Christmases. The whole Christmas season has been a bust all around.
But Sunny and Arianna have a wild idea: What if they had a Christmas do-over in January? February? On Saint Patrick's Day? Christmas all year long - what could that look like? As these three determined women chase the perfect holiday through twelve months of cooking disasters, over-the-top festivity, and lots of laughter and tears, they'll discover perfection is way overrated.

Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio
951 W. Chicago Ave. Oak Park, IL 60302 (312) 994-4000 [email protected] flwright.org In August 2020, I visited Oak Park in Chicago’s West Side. The neighborhood is known for its Frank Lloyd Wright architecture.
Wright, a native of Spring Green, Wis., and a Chicago architect, designed more than 400 homes and public buildings throughout the United States during the first half of the twentieth century.
Wright is known for his residential structures, which feature low roofs, open floor plans, and furnishings to match the home designs. His public building designs echo the natural landscapes surrounding them.
To prepare for the trip, I purchased a book on Amazon called Hometown Architect by Patrick F. Cannon. I learned from Cannon's book that Wright designed twenty-three residences and three civic structures in Oak Park. He designed five residences and two civic structures in nearby River Forest.
Tumblr media
Some of Wright's favorite books, on shelves above the children's playroom of his home The Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio was built in 1889 in the Shingle Style. The museum was giving tours during COVID-19. I was able to obtain a museum map from the studio’s gift shop to take on a walking tour after exploring the museum.
As Wright noted in An Autobiography, Oak Park was called “Saint’s Rest.” The community of families and church workers made his mother feel at home. “The quiet village looked much like Madison to mother,” he wrote.
Wright's father, a former preacher, taught at a conservatory in Madison. After a brief sojourn in New England, Wright lived and worked on the farm of his uncle and aunt. He escaped to Chicago and began to apprentice as an architect. Wright's mother moved from Madison to be closer to her son.
Wright reflected on the Queen Anne architecture in the neighborhood while taking a walk one day. The homes, built on tiny lawns, featured a masonry foundation, wood walls with shingles or siding, decorative brackets, bay windows, and gabled roofs. "Simplicity," Wright wrote, "was as far from this scrap-pile as the pandemonium of the barnyard is far from music. But easy enough for the architect."
Tumblr media
Walter H. Gale House -- Wright's version of the Queen Anne style, before his Prairie School architecture Wright stated, "I had an idea that the horizontal planes in buildings, those planes parallel to the earth, identify themselves with the ground -- make the building belong to the ground. I began putting this idea to work."
Wright's homes were designed with low ceilings to fit someone about 5'8" -- the size of Frank Lloyd Wright. Instead of rooms side by side, he designed a large room with a central fireplace, and dining, kitchen, and sleeping areas around it. Wright made furniture and decorative objects for his homes with the overall design aesthetic of "organic simplicity."
Unlike Louis Sullivan, his former boss, who believed that "form follows function," Wright believed that "form and function are one." Buildings, he wrote, favored "the expressive flow of continuous surface."
Wright had a studio in the home and worked from there until 1895. He converted it into bedrooms in 1895 to accommodate his six children by Catherine Tobin Wright.
Tumblr media
Drafting room Wright built a new studio in 1898, located down the hall from his living quarters. He paid for the studio with money made from designing glass for the American Luxfor Prism Company.
Wright chose an octagonal shape for his studio. The wing featured a drafting room, office, and library. The studio had a waiting area with a desk. Clients could view Wright's plans in the waiting area without entering the drafting room and disturbing the workers.
Tumblr media
Waiting room According to Briar Owens, museum manager, Wright sold his studio and did not return to it after the sale. The books he published in later years were written from Taliesin, a home he designed in Spring Green.
Wright moved to Taliesin in 1911. He converted his studio, again, into living quarters. The dwelling was further divided into apartment units during World War II.
During his studio days, he wrote his articles, "A Home in a Prairie Town" and "A Fireproof House for $5,000" and published them in Ladies Home Journal.
Tumblr media
Studio office On a walking tour of the neighborhood, I took pictures of several Wright houses.
Included on the tour is the Prairie Style home of Willam H. Copeland House. Copeland's son-in-law, Walter Pratt Beachy, was a business partner with John Wright, Frank's son, in the company that made Lincoln Logs.
Tumblr media
William H. Copeland House Notable is the brick archway over the front entrance of the Arthur B. Heurtley House. Frank Lloyd Wright's sister, Jane Porter, bought the home from Wright's clients and lived there from 1920 to 1946.
Tumblr media
Arthur B. Huertley House I returned with a driver in an SUV another day. I asked him to drive me through the neighborhood to look at more of the homes.
At 520 N. East Ave., in a dark walled compound, an author named Mamah Cheney lived with her husband Edwin, a Chicago engineer, and their two children. Wright and Cheney had an affair toward the end of his marriage to Catherine. So the story goes, they used to ride around Oak Park in Wright's yellow sports car.
Tumblr media
Mamah Cheney House Cheney lived with Wright at Taliesin until a tragedy happened on August 15, 1914. Julian Carlton, a disgruntled worker, murdered Mamah Cheney, her two children, and four of Wright's workers, with a hatchet and burned them.
Wright and Edwin Cheney were in Chicago at the time. While there was an aura of suspicion around them, Carlton was blamed for the crime. He was arrested and died in jail. To get an idea of the public apathy at the time for Carlton, his corpse was dismembered and incinerated after his death.
Wright escaped to Japan before World War II and spent extended periods of time in Russia as well. These sojourns seemed to prevent him from gaining further public scrutiny regarding the murder case.
Tumblr media
A sign to recruit volunteers for the museum
The Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio was renovated in 1974. It is open to the public for tours. Hours are daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tours are $20 to view the home inside and $30 to tour the inside and outside of the home. Book online at flwright.org/tour.

Tom and Reader talking about their future together “and we can have 4 kids” “I am not birthing 4 kids” “…how about 3?” “Hm. Two girls and a boy?” “Imagine twins” “that’ll be hell”
“I think a girl would be lovely.” Tom’s voice fills the dark room. Neither of you could sleep, neither of you desired it. All you wanted was to be with one another, feeling each other’s presence and letting your limbs intertwin.
“Hmm?” The conversation sparked suddenly as his fingers tapped at your shoulder.
“You know, kids, I think a girl would be lovely. Growing up with boys I think I want a girl. She would be adorable.” He told you a you grew a smile. Sometimes, you wondered what happened in your boyfriends brain but now you knew.
“I guess I never thought about if I want a boy or a girl.” You admitted. Kids with Tom sounded amazing, you wanted it yes but he clearly thought more than you.
“I’m thinking our first will be a girl, then twins, then maybe another if you’re up for it. And once our oldest is around 16 we can have another!” He got excited and you sat up now not even thinking of it being the middle of the night.
“Wait? You want how many kids?” You asked and he shrugged.
“Like five?” He offers and you shake your head.
“No way, we get three most. Reminder, these are Holland’s, not just any babies.” You lay back down in his arms and he furrows his brows.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” He looks at you with big brown eyes and you only let out a sigh.
“It means…I’m not dealing with anything breaking because football in the house was a good idea.” You tell and he scoffs.
“Did my mum tell you that? That was one time! We never did it again! And it was sams idea he just knew to blame me! Sam was always the good one.” Tom defended as you brought up his childhood. His arms now fold like a child’s as he pouts. You kiss at the corner of his mouth as you settle back in bed.
“Well, in about nine months we’ll see what happens anyways.” You roll over to your side to get comfortable. Finally the feeling of sleep washing over you as you plump up your pillows and snuggle into the blanket.
“Why what’s in nine months? Christmas? No wait….that’s six…saint Patrick’s day?” The boy was so clueless, so painfully clueless as to what you said. But as he laid awake when you were fast asleep, his eyes filled with tears and hand went to your stomach as in nine months would be the best gift of his life, best thing you could ever give him. A family.

Can’t Help Falling in Love
Loki x Reader (f)
Valentine’s Day with the God of Mischief
Based on suggestion by: @squadleaderchase
A/N: Thank you so much for the suggestion! I loved writing this, it was so much fun!
Happy Valentine’s Day y’all!
There is also a gender neutral version of this fic, and will be posted shortly after this one! Read it here!
I recommend to putting on Can’t Help Falling in Love by Elvis towards the end just for that finishing touch!
Summary: When Loki learns about the traditions of Valentine’s Day, he asks you to be his Valentine- and reluctantly takes advice from Steve Rogers.
Word Count: 2.9k
Warnings: none; just fluff
Tumblr media
“Can’t Midgardians have a holiday that doesn’t involve such a grotesque display of… red?” Loki asks walking into the living room of the Avengers compound. Loki arrived at the compound a few weeks before Christmas and so far, he’s experienced two Earth holidays: Christmas and New Year’s. Of course, Tony had picked the theme for both parties to be elaborately red and gold- he claimed the fact that it matched his suit was merely a coincidence.
“Just wait until next month,” you reply casually, your eyes not leaving the brief you were reading while you sat cozied up in one of the large armchairs. “I think you’ll like St. Patrick’s Day much more… color scheme wise at least.”
Loki looked up curiously at the hearts of all shades of red and pink Natasha had hung up to decorate the Avengers’ living quarters. She had gone to visit Clint’s family and his kids spent hours making Valentines and decorations out of construction paper and glitter. Loki looked almost puzzled at the lopsided hearts that hung from the ceiling on transparent line so they looked like they floated mid-air.
“Perhaps I might,” he mumbled to himself, the lovesick aura of his surroundings making him slightly disgusted. “Though I suppose I find your rituals as bizarre as you’d find on Asgard.”
“Mhmm,” you mumbled in response to his thinking out loud. It was rare that the compound would be this quiet. It was a Friday evening and in the middle of a team meeting earlier today, Tony declared exhaustedly that everyone needs to start the weekend early and dismissed everyone despite Steve’s protests. You weren’t sure where everyone else went and you didn’t particularly care- enjoying the rare peace and quiet.
You didn’t mind Loki’s company. He was a little aloof but overall, you found him more to be misunderstood than anything else. He wasn’t like Thor and sure, he had a very trouble ridden past to downplay it- but he’s confided in you all it wasn’t entirely his doing. Out of everyone living at the compound, he probably had grown the closest to you, or as close as Loki would allow himself to be to someone.
“What even is this holiday?” Loki asked, pulling his attention from the decorations to where you sat, binder in your lap. You looked up and closed the brief, tossing it onto the coffee table in front of where you sat.
“Sunday is Valentine’s Day,” you say looking back over to him, meeting his eyes. “I mean overtime the traditions and how we celebrate have changed but it’s originally the day meant to honor St. Valentine and commemorate his death. There’s a lot more to it than that and there’s all different of different origins, but now it’s more like a day where you celebrate love, because he was the patron Saint of Love.”
Loki nods, liking the idea of this holiday much more than New Years already. He didn’t mind Christmas, but the elaborate parties made everything not very appealing to him. You can’t blame the god for not having a good time at parties where every guest fears him or hates him. He walks over and takes a seat on the couch and crosses his legs. He was intrigued enough to continue the conversation and ask you more questions. “What are the traditions?” He asks curiously.
“Traditionally, you would ask someone to be your Valentine, and that’s the person you want to spend the day with,” you answer with a small shrug, trying to explain a holiday you’ve never had to explain before. “Some people have it easy and they ask their significant other, and if you don’t have one, you ask someone you’re romantically interested in to be your Valentine. Then you give each other gifts, like chocolates or flowers, anything really that’s romantic and you go out on a date, like a nice dinner but it doesn’t have to be. That’s the basic gist.”
“Thank you, (y/n),” Loki said, mulling over your explanation. “You’ve been helpful, as always. Tell me, who’s your Valentine?”
“I don’t have one,” you answered honestly. The only time you really celebrated was when you had been with someone. You’d never really participated otherwise. You planned to just spend the night alone or with Nat if she also didn’t have plans and probably watch a movie- most definitely Pride and Prejudice.
“Shame,” Loki said with a tsk. “Perhaps, if you would be interested, you could be my Valentine?”
“Really?” you ask, honestly surprised.
“I actually like the idea of the day,” Loki shrugged. “And I don’t know many people, people seem to hate me on this planet- no idea as to why. You’ve always been kind to me, and you are the most tolerable person I’ve encountered on this planet.”
“That’s oddly very kind of you,” you say with a chuckle. “I appreciate the sentiments. Um, yes. I’d be happy to be your Valentine.”
“Excellent,” he grinned. He clapped his hands together and stood up. “Splendid. I’ll ask Thor to help me plan something.”
“I’m looking forward to it,” you smile, picking up your paperwork again as Loki heads off to find his brother.
***
“Brother,” Thor’s voice echoed in the training room. “Spar with me?”
“As much as I would love to,” Loki said sarcastically, “I need your help with something I need to plan.” Loki walked over to the side of the mat where Thor had been training with Captain Rogers.
“Plan what?” Captain Rogers asked curiously. It was an innocent enough question but Loki took it as Rogers insinuating his distrust in him. Of course, Loki can’t blame the man but it did rub him the wrong way.
“If you must know Captain Rogers, I’m making plans for this upcoming Valentine’s Day,” Loki said matter-of-factly. “I’m sure since you have quite the active love life recently, your words of wisdom are probably of infinite value.”
“You can learn a thing or two from me,” Steve retorted as he put the punching bag beck into place. “But I don’t like your attitude.”
“I don’t know how I’ll ever manage without you,” Loki scoffed. He turned his attention back to his brother. “I need help to determine where I should take (y/n) and what I should get her.”
“(y/n) agreed to this?” Thor asks, his eyebrows raised in confusion. Rogers kept his mouth shut, deciding to see where this conversation will go before
“Yes, brother. I asked her to be my Valentine as stated by tradition and she said yes.”
“Ah! Good for you, brother!” Thor exclaimed, happily. “I’m glad you’re immersing yourself in the Midgard culture.”
“Yes, yes,” Loki waved him off, “Now, please, tell me what I should do.”
“I’ve never celebrated Valentine’s Day,” Thor says with a shrug and a sympathetic look. “I haven’t had much opportunity to explore the culture. Every time I’m on this planet I’m a little busy preventing its destruction. Perhaps Rogers can help you?”
Loki let out an exasperated sigh. He avoided Rogers as he knew the man had such a smug look on his face. Loki refused to give him the satisfaction. However, he realized that wouldn’t be fair to you. Rogers not only knew what to do, but he was also close friends with you. He quickly realized if he wanted to celebrate with you properly, he’d need to rely on the infamous super soldier.
“Captain Rogers,” Loki said with a charismatic smile, turning back to the man. “I wholeheartedly apologize for my lack of… social niceties. If you’d be willing to help me, to ensure your dear friend enjoys her holiday, I would be sincerely grateful.”
“Only because of (y/n),” Rogers says skeptically, waving a finger at Loki. “She deserves to enjoy her time and I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if I let you screw up her evening.”
“What a loyal friend.”
Years later, the Avengers would still talk about the fact Loki cared about you so much, he sought out advice from Captain America and Thor. And as Captain America said, he helped Loki with every last detail and Steve never let Loki forget it.
***
Loki had told you that he’d come to your room to get you at 6 o’clock Sunday evening. He wore clothes he had picked out, black dress pants, a white button-down shirt and shiny, black dress shoes. He had kept the last button of the shirt unbuttoned and he had rolled the sleeves up, a styling tip he had gotten from Thor. He had his long hair gelled back and tamed, ignoring Captain Roger’s horrible suggestion for a haircut. He felt very weird not wearing any green, but he took the advice he was given on his ensemble.
You were just putting on your heels when he knocked at your door Sunday promptly at 6pm. Of course, Loki would be very punctual. You gave yourself one more quick once more in the mirror in your room before heading to answer the door.
You had on a pair of dark green heels that perfectly matched your dress. You also layered over the outfit a suede brown jacket, that complimented the jewel tone of the dress and shoes nicely. You kept your appearance simple, sticking to how you usually styled your hair. Not wanting to keep him waiting, you quickly opened the door, your jacket and bag both in hand.
“Wow,” you say with a grin, when you take in Loki’s appearance. “You look very nice.”
“You look stunning,” Loki said, his eyes widening, taking in your appearance. The compliment made you have butterflies.
“Thank you,” you said with false confidence. Underneath, you were a nervous wreck as you took the arm that he extended to you.
“So,” Loki began to walk down the hallway with you. “Apparently, this planet has something called reservations, and anyone who tries to get one a few days before Valentine’s Day is a “moron,” according to a very rude young man I had the pleasure of speaking with- the first time using a phone too on top of that. So, I hope you don’t mind if the evening is a little… makeshift.”
“I’m sure it’ll be great,” you reassure him. You feel him relax slightly. You found how hard he was trying so endearing.
Where else did he bring you but just down the hall to the living room. At night with the lights dimmed, combined with Natasha’s homemade decorations, it actually looked quite beautiful. He had decorated with an eclectic array of candles as well that covered most surfaces of the room. It also looked like he had swiped every throw pillow in the whole compound and had them arranged the coffee table in the center of the room.
“Did you do all of this?” You ask in awe.
“Yes,” he replied, just watching you. “Do you like it?”
“It’s perfect.”
“I had to make my own version of advice I received,” he disclosed to you. You sat opposite each other on either side of the coffee table, you kicked off your heels and he did the same with his shoes. “Captain Rogers said- and I’m trying my best to quote verbatim, ‘You need to show a girl a good time. You gotta take her to dinner and dancing.’” He even mimicked Steve’s voice perfectly. It made you laugh.
“I can’t believe you subjected yourself to Steve for me, I’m touched,” you smiled. “I mean I love Steve,” you continue, “But I can’t imagine you too being best friends anytime soon.”
“No, I suppose we probably won’t be,” Loki chuckles.
“I hate to point it out,” you continue, “but I think you missed both the dinner part and the dancing part of that plan.” Loki smirked and when you blinked, he transformed the whole room.
“Did I?” he asks, with an eyebrow raised. You gasp, looking around the room you were now in. You knew it was an illusion, but it felt very real. The atmosphere, the breeze coming in from the large bay windows that weren’t there before. The coffee table now a table now one of many dining tables in an incredibly high-end restaurant. The table had food, and a bottle of wine. You were stunned. There was a live band and other couples in other tables and out on the dancefloor.
“Loki?” You exclaimed, looking around at your new surroundings. It was amazing. You couldn’t believe the magic right before your eyes. Of course, you knew it was just one of his tricks, but it felt so incredibly real. You picked up your fork and took a bite of the food in front of you. It was incredible, you questioned if you were even eating.
“It’s real,” Loki said, like he could read your mind. Honestly, he had only just anticipated your next question. “I made it. Well, I made it with Friday’s supervision.”
“It’s fantastic! I can’t believe you went through all this trouble just for me.”
“Sweetheart, you are very much worth it- worth much more than this,” he responded casually, throwing in the term of endearment to see how you’d react. He caught the way it made you smile.
You continued to talk for a little while, and shared stories. You were worried that compared to his life on Asgard, he’d find your stories incredibly boring and mundane. It seemed to be the opposite. His attention was only on you and he held on to every word you said. He created this elaborate setting just to keep you the center of his attention.
“Should we dance?” He asks suddenly, a glimmer in his eye. You looked down apprehensively.
“I’m not really a dancer,” you tried to insist.
“Do you actually not want to dance, darling? Because if so, I will not bring it up again,” he says earnestly, “But, if you’re saying no because you’re afraid I’m going to judge you, I honestly can promise you I would never dream of doing so.”
You give it another moment to ponder over his words. You were taken aback at how well he seemed to know how you were thinking. You let out a sigh of defeat, and smile. “I’d love to,” you reply.
He stands up and offers you his hand. His smile is enough to make you weak at the knees. You take his hand and he leads you over to the dancefloor as the band starts playing its next song. “Does that singer sound like Elvis?” You ask, the small glitch in the illusion throwing you off for only a moment.
“I don’t know who that is,” Loki says with a laugh. He pulls you in close and rests one hand on the small of your back and the other grasps your hand close. You wrap your other arm around his shoulder. You are both pressed up incredibly close to one another. You rest your head on his chest comfortably, and you can’t see how much the action makes his whole face go red. Guiding your movements together, it mostly just swaying in place. The steps were small, and with the music playing for the two of you.
“This place is incredible,” you sigh happily looking up at him. “But I think I liked the first place a little better.”
He nodded in agreement and you got to watch a green hue encompass the walls of the restaurant as they almost melted away, and everything around the two of you just fade away. The sconces on the walls, revealed themselves to be the candles that cluttered the living room and the couples evaporated with the green mist. The table you had both sat at, turned back to the coffee table but the empty plates remained. The elaborate statues that surrounded the room turned into the furniture you knew well, and then the live band faded away to reveal Steve’s record player indeed playing a 45 of Can’t Help Falling in Love by Elvis Presley.
When the room finished revealing its true appearance to you, you laid your head back on Loki’s chest and mumbled that now it was perfect. He smiled to himself, thinking about how without a doubt in his mind, Valentine’s Day is his absolute favorite holiday on Midgard. He now couldn’t believe this reality was real. If he wasn’t holding you, he’d pinch himself. You were here, with him, in his arms, dancing in the middle of the living room on this godforsaken planet.
“(y/n)?” he whispered softly as the song was coming to an end.
“Mhmm?” You responded, your eyes closed, really just basking in the feeling of being so close to him and the smell of his cologne.
“Will be mine?” He asks carefully, remembering the phrase from Captain Roger’s advice. That phrase apparently being very important if today went well and he wanted to ask you to “go steady.” You chuckled softly, hearing Steve’s influence in the phrase.
“I would love to,” you say with a shy smile looking back up to him. He beams, incredibly happy you said yes. Swept up in his emotions, he swiftly leans down and presses his lips to yours capturing them in a passionate first kiss.
“Oh gross!” You hear someone exclaim, making you both pull away. It’s Tony- who was currently holding his side in pain as Pepper elbowed him in the side.
“You really had to do that?” she chastised him, rolling her eyes and giving an apologetic look to you and Loki before pushing Tony down the hallway to give you both your moment back, as sullied as it had become thanks to Tony.
“I’m so sorry,” she said embarrassed by his outburst, ushering him out as quickly as possible.
Loki turns his head back to you, immediately after they are out of view. “Where were we, darling?” He smirks, pulling you in for another kiss.

Cork History | With Love from Cork
by Michael Lenihan
Tumblr media
It is widely accepted that the Christian church decided to place St. Valentine’s feast day in the middle of February in an effort to “Christianise” the pagan celebration of Lupercalia. Celebrated on February 15, Lupercalia was a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, as well as to the Roman founders Romulus and Remus. Later in the day, according to legend, all the young women in the city would place their names in a big urn. The city’s bachelors would each choose a name and become paired for the year with his chosen woman. These matches often ended in marriage. The Catholic Church recognises at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred. John Sprat was an Irish Carmelite Friar and well-known preacher.  He visited Rome, where he received a relic of Saint Valentine from Pope Gregory XVI, and Sprat brought the Reliquary containing the relics to his Whitefriar Street Church in Dublin where it remains to this day.
In France and England February 14 was assumed to be the beginning of the birds mating season, which added to the idea that Valentine’s Day should be a day for romance. The English poet Geoffrey Chaucer was the first to record St. Valentine’s Day as a day of romantic celebration in his 1375 poem “Parliament of Foules,” writing, “For this was Seynt on Valentyne’s day / Whan every foul cometh ther to choose his mate.” Valentine greetings were popular as far back as the Middle Ages, although written Valentines didn’t begin to appear until around 1400. The oldest known valentine still in existence  was a poem written in 1415 by Charles, Duke of Orleans to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London following his capture at the Battle of Agincourt.
In America the exchanging of hand-made valentines became very popular in the early 1700s and some wonderful early English examples exist in the Victoria & Albert Museum. By the middle of the 1800s, it was common for friends and lovers of all social classes to exchange small tokens of affection or handwritten notes, and by 1900 printed cards began to replace handwritten letters due to advances in printing technology. Ready-made cards were an easy way for people to express their emotions in a time when direct expression of one’s feelings was discouraged. An explosion of  affection in the form of Valentine cards made its way through the postal system thanks to the introduction of the penny post by Rowland Hill on 10 January1840.
Corkonians were quick to respond to cupid’s arrow and some Victorian advertisements by W. Wheeler Junior give us examples of his high-class stock of Valentine’s Day gifts. Valentines in boxes, from 3d. to £1 15s 03d containing solid silver jewellery, perfume, bottles, cards, cigar, and cigarette cases could be had from his premises at 4 & 5 Patrick Street. Another advertiser proclaimed that there was no charge for love notes to purchasers of Valentines at sixpence and upwards. Valentine novelties such as hummingbird Valentines were very popular shop window displays. W.J. Murray of George’s Street (now Oliver Plunkett Street) was doing a brisk trade in Valentine cards including those of the sentimental, poetic, refined and comic variety which could be posted nationwide post free.
The bard himself William Shakespeare mentions Saint Valentine's Day in A Midsummer Night's Dream (4.1.145) and in Hamlet, where he alludes to the superstition that if two single people meet on the morning of Saint Valentine's Day they will likely get married:
Tomorrow is St. Valentine’s Day
All in the morning betime
And I a maid at your window,
To be your Valentine.
Today, St. Valentine’s Day has become a much more commercial proposition. Bouquets of red roses, magnums of champagne, handmade chocolate, cuddly toys, organic candles, jewellery and of course the romantic candlelit meal are now standard fare. Well after all love is in the air so why not spice up your life with a little bit of romance.
