Harley Quinn: "Anything you desire. Whatever your little heart desires. We'll spend eternity together being the stars that Gotham deserves. Anything you could possibly want is yours. I'll make you the goddess/god you deserve to be."
Catwoman: "I love you more than I can ever say. Every day I’m with you is a reminder of how lucky I am to have found you. I will always be there for you and I want you to know that no matter what happens, no matter what you need or want, you will always be my top priority. I love you so much and I can’t imagine what life would be like without you."

Two-Face: "You make me want to be a better man. You deserve the world, and I'm going to fight to give it to you. Anything and everything that you need…. I'll be here for you. That's a promise."
Poison Ivy: "You are beautiful. A flower among weeds. When I look at you, I'm reminded of all the things worth fighting for. "
Killer Croc: "My days are only bright and brilliant when you are around. And I know you feel the same way. We belong to each other. Nothing, and no one, will come between us."

you know i often see people throwing around the claim "joker r*ped/sa'd barbara in tkj" (mainly to shame people for liking the joker or batjokes) even though alan moore has dedunked it at some point. like the only piece of media i can think of with joker as a rapist is the azzarello graphic novel which is shit and doesn't need to be accepted as canon. i know it's kinda of a touchy subject but i'd be interested to hear your thoughts
Well. You've pretty much said it, to be honest.
Even a cursory Google search will reveal that Azzarello's Joker (2008) is a one-off, non-canon story. The just as much stand-alone sequel, Batman: Damned has a grieving Harley Quinn almost force herself on Bruce, and yet I haven't heard people say Harley is a rapist. Hell, didn't Batman and Harley Quinn (2017) have Harley and Nightwing sleep together... with pretty dubious consent on Dick's side? And yet fans are able to acknowledge that these are not canon storylines and that the writer matters a lot-- in the case of the latter, it's co-written by Bruce Timm, who is infamous for his shitty portrayal of female characters (also see the animation Batman: The Killing Joke, in which Barbara very assertively has sex with Batman, because that's of course the only way a woman can exercise power). Actually, Barbara's character has suffered so much... there's even Batman Beyond 2.0 #28, in which Bruce apparently got Barbara pregnant, Dick's girlfriend at the time.
But we all dismiss these storytelling choices because we know they're idiotic. They go against the core of the characters, simple as that. Why is Joker not allowed the same? While what he canonically did to Barbara in TKJ was horrible, rape did not happen, and that's a fact. Any other implications of sexual assault can only be connected to Frank Miller's writing in the TDKR series (not canon), or that horrible (and again, not canon) book adaptation of TKJ by Christa Faust and Gary Phillips. Unfortunately, there are always some writers who think that it's just darker and grittier and cooler, more shocking to have Joker attempt rape or resort to sexual means of intimidation; though it's funny how it happens that these are also generally controversial writers for their sexist depictions of women.
But we do know why Joker is not afforded the same kind of treatment as other characters who got butchered by out-of-character stories, canon or otherwise. He's become the punching bag of the DC fandom; it's so easy to proclaim loud and proud these days how much you hate the Joker and want him dead. If you're an anti and looking to feel morally righteous and signal to your echo chamber how good and pure you are, it's a low hanging fruit to latch onto Joker and criticize him for all he's done. The problem, of course, is when these people start attacking actual, real-life fans over their fictional preferences, shipping or otherwise.
But to give a more general conclusion, and my actual opinion on the matter: Joker is a master manipulator. His main schtick is literally getting Batman to kill him by orchestrating all manner of situations; he manipulates his doctors, his henchmen, he manipulates Gotham itself through the media on countless occasions. The very reason why he did what he did to Barbara in TKJ was to manipulate her father into having a mental breakdown. Joker picks people to break and then breaks them psychologically, that is his MO. What he wants is to expose the people around him, he wants to show that deep down, everyone is rotten.
It probably becomes obvious why rape is inconsistent with this mindset. Joker isn't the kind of monster to make things happen by brute force, he's the kind of monster to manipulate people into the worst versions of themselves and then laugh at them as they hate themselves for it. He'll murder and torture and imply any manner of atrocity to make that happen, but the source of his glee is seeing people fall into the same dark pit, devoid of humanity, he's chosen to live in. (And don't even get me started on the fact that Joker was canonically shown to have been a victim of sexual assault himself as a child, in Batman: Streets of Gotham. As an adult, he's depicted as gruesomely taking revenge on the man who did it. Something tells me there's more than one reason why Joker would not resort to rape, and it goes beyond MOs or agendas.)

Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy threating Miguel like sisters would whenever Bruce would get into a serious relationship and then going to be the fun chaotic aunts to the bat kids and spiderlings.
MayDay is going to be spoiled rotten
I love me protective Harley; weirdly, Peter B threatening Bruce is more effective, to her utter shame.
"It doesn't make sense you're better at threats than me!"

Omg could we please have more badass Batman just showing up bruce
"Robin, Down!"
At your voice, Tim dropped, no questions asked, only to see a blur of grey and black sail over him and plant two booted feet directly into Harley Quinn's chest.
"You!" she shrieked, "You SHOT at my Puddin' "
"And you better thank Batman for knockin' me out. I don't miss twice," you say calmly, hauling Tim to his feet with one hand and shoving him behind you.
Her eyes narrowed and when she launched herself at you, you hit her again.
"You rotten Bitch! You almost killed him!"
"He. Killed. My. Son."
The words penetrated and Tim peered out from behind you, watching Harley with narrowed eyes
"Thought you Bats had a moral code or somethin'," she scoffed.
"Some crimes only God can forgive, Quinn. I'm just getting them there faster."
Harley got to her feet and fell back into a fighting stance, "God I wish you were my mom," she sighed, launching at you again.
"Sorry, got a full house."
"Tell me somethin'" she panted, rubbing the pressure point you'd just jabbed to make her stagger. "Does Bats ever cry when you fuck? I bet he cries."
When you crack her across the face Harley rubbed the spot and spit out a mouthful of blood, "God. You're so much scarier than Bats," she breathed. "You ever get tired of furries, we can link up, y'know?"
"Didn't you just want me to be your mom?"
"What can I say?" she said as Batman slapped a set of cuffs on her, "I got issues."

Year of the Bat - Number 4
Welcome to Year of the Bat! In honor of Kevin Conroy, Arleen Sorkin, and Richard Moll, I’ve been counting down my Top 31 Favorite Episodes of “Batman: The Animated Series” throughout this January. We’re getting close to the end now… TODAY’S EPISODE QUOTE: “Gotham can be a Wonderland, Alice! Tonight, let me be your guide.” Number 4 is…Mad as a Hatter.
Tumblr media
If you know me very well, this episode being in my Top 5 is no surprise at all. If you don’t, then you might be a little surprised. While “Mad as a Hatter” is certainly a well-liked episode, by all accounts, I doubt too many people would name it as being anywhere on-par with stories like “Mad Love” and “Heart of Ice,” two other villain origin stories that I covered in my past two entries. I, however, am not most people: while I love Harley Quinn, and I cannot deny the power of “Heart of Ice,” this story is something close to my heart in a way those two simply are not. This episode is the origin/first appearance of one of the Dark Knight’s slightly more unsung villains, the Mad Hatter. In the story, the Hatter is a highly repressed and socially awkward neuroscientist, by the name of Jervis Tetch. Jervis is an eccentric fellow, who has a bizarre obsession with the “Alice” stories by Lewis Carroll. The strange scientist has created a special headband and cards, which – via highly sophisticated nanotechnology – allow him to control other people’s minds. It’s then revealed that Tetch has unrequited feelings for his secretary (probably not-coincidentally named Alice Pleasance), and – when her boyfriend, Billy, seemingly dumps her – Jervis seizes the opportunity to use this newfound power to try and sweep Alice off her feet. At first, things seem to go well…but unbeknownst to Jervis, after he drops Alice off at home that night, she and Billy make up and even get officially engaged. This sudden development causes Jervis to snap, and he becomes the Mad Hatter: determined to claim Alice as his own, hang all the consequences, and willing to put half of Gotham under his thrall, if necessary, in order to do so. Naturally, Batman can’t allow this; he’s already on Tetch’s trail, after a (presumed) misunderstanding with some street thugs. Now, he must rescue Alice (and Billy) and stop the Mad Hatter before things get any madder.
The Mad Hatter has long been one of my favorite Batman Villains, and I am 99% convinced that the specific version found in the DCAU is the main reason why. In the comics, the Hatter has always been an…iffy character, to say the least, as he’s typically depicted as a rotten-to-the-core little creep with many perverse desires. He’s a villain who’s meant to just be punched in the face, so to speak. Other adaptations have gone in other directions, but I think the version found in the Animated Series handled it the best out of anybody. This is, without a doubt, my definitive take on the Mad Hatter. Part of the reason why is the character’s voice: he’s played by Roddy McDowall, and in fact, the Hatter would be McDowall’s last proper character, as his final appearance in the DCAU – a Superman crossover episode called “Knight Time” – was released posthumously to McDowall’s passing, and a somewhat earlier episode, “Animal Act,” was released not long before his death. This was quite the role to cap a career with, and almost seems an inevitable one: McDowall had previously played a somewhat similar character, the Bookworm, in the 1960s Adam West show. He also was the narrator for an abridged audiobook version of Tim Burton’s Batman (where I swear he plays the most polite Batman in the history of anything). Not only that, but McDowall also played the role of the March Hare in a 1985 TV Miniseries of “Alice in Wonderland.” With credits like these, and his mellifluous voice, he was absolutely perfect casting for the part.
The other reason, however, sits with his origins. This by far the most sympathetic and fascinating take on Jervis Tetch I think we’ve ever been given. It’s easy to relate with the idea of unrequited love as the cause for someone’s descent into darkness, and at the start of the story, Jervis is really very nice. He’s a bit odd, and there are some subtle hints that he’s already on a slightly uneven keel, but he doesn’t come across as truly evil. There’s also an interesting dichotomy with the way his alter ego acts in relation to the rest of his life; it sort of reminds me of Catwoman’s setup in “Batman Returns,” of all things. At the start, Jervis is awkward, shy, panicky, and keeps a lot bottled up. Once he dons the top hat and trenchcoat of the Mad Hatter, however, he becomes a whole different person: he’s more charismatic, more confident, more flamboyant, and – thanks the power of his control chips – he has absolute control, something we get the sense he hasn’t had a lot of in his life. It’s only when his advances are so brutally shot down – when he finds out Alice, after all that, is ENGAGED to Billy – that he REALLY goes off the deep end. There’s some ambiguity and unanswered questions with his background – we don’t know why he’s obsessed with Wonderland, why he’s created these control chips, or even whether or not he intended what happened with the two aforementioned street hooligans – but that actually only makes him more interesting, as it gives the audience a little leeway to come up with their own thoughts, while still presenting a comprehensive understanding of why this Hatter is Mad.
Being a Wonderland-obsessed oddball myself, I’ve always felt a sort of dark kinship, for lack of a better way of putting it, with the concept of Jervis Tetch. That character concept has never been so splendidly handled as in B:TAS, and “Mad as a Hatter” is a phenomenal first impression for the character. I need no other reason to place it so high in my personal ranks.

Tomorrow we move into the Top 3 of the countdown! Hint: “Look at us. We’re all freaks and monsters. And who made us this way? BATMAN!”

Nicholas Hoult’s Renfield did remind me a lot of Harley Quinn. Obviously there are differences (and I am just talking about the film, not Stoker’s novel) but the basics are comparable. An assistant/sidekick devoted to their boss/lover who treats them pretty poorly, so finally they’d had enough and fight for their independence and reclaiming their own self-worth.
There were also some line deliveries from Cagula that made me go “huh.. Nic Cage would make a great Joker”. (No, Joker wasn’t one of his inspirations - apparently it was his father, and Anne Bancroft from The Graduate... Count Dracula, you’re trying to seduce me-)
That final confrontation with Renfield reclaiming his power, saying the affirmations, and defeating Drac was the icing on the comparison cake, to me. It reminded me a lot of Harley’s recent animated series. There was set-up, build up, then a cathartic conclusion. Also like Harley, Renfield isn’t exactly the most moral person and definitely did fucked up shit but I did still root for him. That’s a testament to the writing and Hoult’s performance. (Which can be a problem for me with Harley.. if the writing/acting isn’t that good, I don’t really root for her as much as I should..)
So basically, it was the “Harley leaving Joker” flick I wish I had seen before... yeah, I wasn’t a big fan of Birds of Prey and thought Renfield (2023) was a much better version of that flick. If you loved BOP and found it empowering etc., that’s great. It just didn’t work for me (actually i hate it but I’ll stay on-topic here). But Renfield worked very well for me.
I’ll end with this - I find it ironic that Universal Studios tried the comic book movie approach twice with their Dark Universe attempt and it failed (quite spectacularly the second time) but their “what if Renfield was like Harley Quinn?” (doubt that was intentional but a lot of us are seeing that comparison) flick was a pretty good success *shoos Rotten Tomatoes and the box office away*

Shitty Superhero Tournament Rules and Bracket
Finally, ¡the tournament is about to begin! The bracket will be posted under the cut, but first let’s get some clarifications and rules out of the way:
The movies here have been selected (with two exceptions*) based on their Rotten Tomatoes movie scores and do not reflect my opinion of their quality. The tournament will be divided into six rounds.
Each movie will come with a quick summary of some of its highlights (or lowlights, depending on your point of view) but feel free to create and submit your own propaganda.
You may vote in any way you want, rooting for whatever gives you the most entertainment in a train wreck sort of way, the movie that’s the most incompetently made, a film you feel is actually really good, or however you want to interpret what the winner of a Shitty Superhero Movie Tournament entails.
Personal attacks/bigoted comments and propaganda WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. If you are here looking for an excuse to be racist/sexist/homophobic/anti-semitic/body-shaming/a dick to people trying to collect a paycheck under the corporate grindstone, fuck off. Just because these movies may be shitty doesn’t mean you should be.
If I make a factual error, feel free to correct me on it. Reblogs are encourage, ofc.
¡Have fun and be kind to each other!

Favorite color: Orange/yellow. Like California poppies
Currently reading: Been slowly listening to The War before the War on Audiobook. Gotta be in the right mindset for that one.
Last song: E.M.P.Eror (Smash Stereo Remix) Its from spotify playlist called “Vampire Party” moody, dark, industrial EDM. My inner goth is living.
Last series: Rewatching seasons 1 & 2 of Harley Quinn for some desperately needed dopamine (saving s3 for when my gf gets back from a trip). New series...honestly embarrassing but... the Pretty Little Liars reboot 💀. PLL as a slasher? I had to. Also it had a shockingly high rotten tomatoes score. How could I not see for myself?
Last movie: Blade. Put it on last night while I was cooking dinner. Lol. Noticing a theme here? I live for that leather clad Matrix/ industrial rave/vampire vibe
Currently working on: Too many things!!! Applying for jobs. Trying to learn an Irish Jig on the ukulele. I just got a new guitar for my bday, so I’m trying to practice some skyrim OST songs on that. Also slowly picking up my Cait/Corina Battle academia screenshot redraw.

The Battle of the Velmas
Before I start uttering a single syllable, I should remind you of the wise words of Mystery Science Theater 3000.
Repeat to yourself its just a show, I should really just relax.
Whether it’s comics, movies, shows or whatever it is, it’s just what it is. A show.
I dont care that Velma is a person of color. More representation is needed in all forms of media. I prefer new original characters rather than an original character being race swapped. But then again’ I’ve seen kids face light up when they see themselves reflecting in any media and that trumps everything else within my eyes. Thus, to me it’s not a big deal.
What’s a big deal is the mischaracterization of an established character. I get perhaps tweaking a character to match the changes culturally and respectfully while still maintaining the essence of said character.
Which brings me to the new “Velma” show.
Velma doesn’t feel like Velma. The scoobie gang don’t feel like the characters we’ve come to know over the decades. That’s a valid creative choice but one I find will have many detractors.
It’s the same art style and humor as the Harley Quinn show. Even if the characters are heavily parodied from the source material… they’re still recognizable and familiar.
I think the “Velma” missed the mark on that. I hope that if the show continues they’ll be able to find a compromise of their vision and aligning on the familiarity of establish characters. Even if it’s an opportunity to flip expectations.
And no, I’m not bother by the lack of the famed dog that tends to be the centerpiece of the franchise. He could be introduced later down the line or whatever.
At the end of the day, I’m passing on this show. I hope for its success and hopefully course corrects itself to the satisfaction of all parties involved.
If you don’t want to watch the show then don’t. The previous shows featuring these characters still exist and can be watched.
If the show is giving you that much stress then relax, as it’s just a show. Hate-watching a show just sounds like mental self-harm and a waste of time.
Plus, you’re boosting ratings by hate watching.
There’s valid critiques surrounding the show and I’m sure the creators will be receptive. And they’ll be receptive because they’ll want their show to be a success and it’s brutal out there in the industry as a show is lucky to even air its pilot episode.
The show became the streamer’s most-watched animated series debut ever. It makes sense why a Season 2 was green-lighted. Granted, it’s reviews are stinkier than a literal rotten tomato.
Rotten tomatoes has the critics giving it a 55% rotten score while the audience score is a nice low 6%. The online chatter hasn’t been all flowers and birds since the show is being eviscerated by those online. Whether justifiable or not.
I think season two needs to course correct but even if the creators make the necessary changes, would it be too late? Would enough if the audience move on to where the show just fades into memory and becomes a cautionary tale?
Again, I think the premise is interesting. Changing the appearances of the characters isn’t a big deal to me nor the lack of the dog. I think they missed the mark on the characters and they can adjust enough to not lose their vision.
It’s a good show in my opinion. It’s not a show I have interest in watching personally but that’s okay. I still want it to succeed and I think Mindy Kaling vision is valid and with a few tweaks, could get everyone else on board.
If Kaling wants to stick with her vision without compromise then that’s her right as a artist and creative. She’s incredibly talented enough to make the show work and the show will find it audiences. If the pre-sequel Star Wars movies can fan an audience to live their films then “Velma” can find its audience too.
It may just take a while.
All I know is that it’s going to take more than a scoobie snack for people to give Season 2 a chance.
