PSA to all of my beginner hooodoo practitioners!
Discuss all of your new ideas about hoodoo in private ! As this tradition is fully going back into the hands of our people be mindful of the information you put out that will fall into the hands of colonizers who love to appropriate and make a profit off of your sacred practice.
Hoodo is an adapting living breathing tradition and it’s gatekeepers are allowed to change it with the times. I encourage all rootworkers and conjurers to create new traditions and structures for your practice and ancestors but most importantly as a collective because Black folks are communal people. We step out and do everything as a community it is our greatest value.

We’re still here! We’re still fighting! Ferguson 8/9/2014! We miss you Mike💕. . I fall to neither party as neither benefits me as an African American/Indigenous American (Choctaw) woman. I’ve personally dealt with sexism, racism, discrimination of the worst kind, both within and outside my community - I’m fighting for unbiased validation. Let my voice, desires, needs, body, skin have just as much value as worth as any persons. I’m fighting for my brothers and sisters that are gunned down/killed/discriminated against for being gay, trans, & disabled. I’m fighting against redlining, against the pay gap, lobbyist, and big pharma, and our current health industry where keeping patients sick is more profitable than healing them. Where medicine advanced on the exploitation and literal dissection of black bodies. I fight against the erasing of our history when 3-4 generations ago, my elders were slaves, when they were literally bred into debt because of sharecropping and land rentals keeping them below the poverty line. I fight for POC, and exclusively my people because even within POC, we are still considered less than. . Do you have to be Christian to practice hoodoo/rootwork? And also can you practice green witchcraft and practice rootwork?
Christianity & Hoodoo: One is a religion, the other is not
Hoodoo has a long history from its inception of being intertwined with Christianity (and some Judaism), so many practices within rootwork are Christian, Jewish, or influenced by both. Hoodoo originally derived from ATRs (African traditional religions), and during its development over the last several centuries, many other religions have also influenced it such as Native American traditions, Buddhism, and Hinduism. However, hoodoo is a magic practice not a religion, so you can absolutely be of any religion(s) and a rootworker.
I was born Jewish and honor those roots in many ways including within hoodoo, but I’m very uncomfortable with Christianity so I choose not to engage with those sides for personal reasons. If you are Christian and want to practice hoodoo, there’s a lot of great opportunities there, but it’s definitely not necessary and there are plenty of non-Christian rootworkers out there like me.
The main things that are necessary for rootwork are having black ancestry, ancestor work, learning hoodoo traditions but also making your own intuitive innovations, working with the energies/spirits of the land and your ingredients.
Witchcraft & Hoodoo: Not the same thing, but very compatible!
Just so you know, witchcraft and hoodoo/rootwork are different practices.
There are absolutely plenty of hoodoo witches, who are practitioners combining witchcraft and hoodoo together in their own craft and/or incorporating hoodoo into their witchcraft. This is something you can legitimately do since hoodoo is very flexible and adaptable! Most rootworkers on Tumblr are also witches.
However, there are also many, many rootworkers who aren’t witches. From my understanding, it’s very likely that the majority in the US today are not and historically have not been. “Root doctor” and “witch doctor,” meaning someone who heals and protects people from witchcraft, are some of the many synonyms for rootworker. Personally, I am a rootworker and not a witch though there are lots and lots of hoodoo witches I greatly admire and respect!!
So basically, the two are fundamentally different but it’s very common to combine and blend them together.
Green Magic, Green Witchcraft: What is Hoodoo?
Can you practice green witchcraft and rootwork together? Absolutely you can! Although maybe what you meant by “green witchcraft” isn’t necessarily “witchcraft” specifically? That term is commonly used to refer to the magic practices of using herbs, working with plants and trees, and making nature is the foundation of your craft. Personally (if that’s what you really meant), I’d call these practices green magic as a more general umbrella term that encompasses green witchcraft and other traditions like hoodoo that aren’t inherently a form of witchcraft.
Those practices of green magic that I named are already are very integral to the practice of hoodoo. In this sense, rootwork is a type of green magic that has a lot in common with green witchcraft and the two would overlap immensely.

tbh, I think white people are not even able to practice hoodoo in a technical sense.
hoodoo is liberation magick carried in the DNA of African Descended people
you can do the recipes, you can learn from books or teachers, but unless you got that diaspora blood flowin, you’re just doing folk magick (tho you can appropriate recipes that are directly associated with hoodoo)
this isn’t anything I’ve been told, this is just what I keep feeling in my bones when I meet with my ancestors, when I think of recipes, when I recall my genetic memory. I’m not the definitive expert, but I’ve been learning a lot from my ancestors, from sensations I get when I work recipes or talk to the wind. Hoodoo has European & Indigenous influences, it has variances all over the regions & families in which it’s been practiced, but what makes it hoodoo and not some other form of folk magick, is the African Ancestral link. As a biracial black person, I was led to hoodoo after years of feeling out of place in pagan (European centric) magick practices. I was extremely uncertain of my ability to practice it, being the child of one white parent, but during the time of uncertainty, my connection to my black ancestors strengthened. They started talking to me louder and louder. I feel these experiences to be my truth.
It was born out of the need for liberation. The magick in the DNA of the diaspora kept us alive. It’s strong.

ELDER FLOWER (Sambucus Canadensis)
Tumblr media
Elder Flower (Sambucus Canadensis / Sambucus nigra)
Medicinal: The Elder Flower is an amazing plant, due to every bit of it being usable; the bark from its tree, the berries, the leaves, and even the roots have a special place. It's also thought to be 'the entire medicine cabinet' for a lot of country folk for years and years because of its healing properties and medicinal uses. To name just a few, it helps with boosting your immune system, fight off infection, helping to combat allergies, reducing inflammation in the mucous membranes in the sinuses, and can even be made into a tea to provide calming relief for severe cold systems.
Precautions: The raw fruit contains sambunigrin and could cause severe vomiting and diarrhea if taken internally. We highly recommend that you consult with a qualified healthcare practitioner before using or ingesting herbal products, particularly if you are pregnant, nursing, or on any medications.
Spiritual Practice: Elderflower has been deeply established in folklore for hundreds of years. It is commonly used for uncrossing, protection, prosperity and abundance, and healing. It is also said to be used in spellwork related to removing negativity, negative spirits, and protection from witches. The elder tree is also associated with the goddess and feminine energy.
Russian culture has a long and rich history believing it gives protection from evil spirits, whereas the Bohemians believed that it is used in a spell to take away fever in a person. All in all, every part of this wonderful plant can be used in your work including the leaves, flowers, and berries. Even the stems are well known to make very nice wands.
In Hoodoo: I use elder more as a banishing and cleansing herb, but that's just me. I have however used every part of the elderflower in protection and healing work, and even to help with uncrossing and prosperity. You can mix the leaves and berries with a few other herbs to make a mixture and scatter this around your house or business for protection from intruders, both in spirit and body. Add it to a small cloth bag and wear it to protect yourself from evil or bring good luck.
Mixed with other herbs for confusion and/or to keep the law away and you can do just that, keep the police or other unwanted intruders off your property or away from your business. Hang it over your doorways and windows to keeps evil from the house, and to keep out all negative energy.

A Saint Expedite working, to help a patron sell a house. It took a little longer than hoped for but there was an extenuating circumstance. Divination showed that the house was not selling because it needed to be spiritually cleaned first. Once that was done, it didn’t take long and S.E. got his poundcake, coins and other things he was promised. I know of some other routes for selling homes but this was was the readings said to do. I’ve called on several other Spirits for home sales and had luck with each of them. I need to start charging a percentage instead of a flat fee! #spells #Hoodoo #SaintExpedite #FastLuck #saintmagic #rootwork #ConjureWork #conjureman #rootdoctor https://www.instagram.com/p/B9zSxhIANFz/?igshid=1vv58f9gwc30a
