Hi, welcome to my blog!

I like Star Trek and drawing Star Trek art.

I want to make more friends on Tumblr, and if you'd like to know more about me, look under this cut!

My name is Jack, but you can call me whatever else you feel like. I go by he/him. I have autism, so if I accidentally encroach on a social rule, give me some grace and make me aware.

Most of my art is centered around my favorite ship Jackshir. I really like coming up with rarepairs, and it's not my only one, but it's my central one. I'm also a really big fan of Rom/Leeta, Garashir, Spirk (who isn't), Chahura, Lon/Tuvok, Quark/Odo, Geordi/Data, Mariner/Jennifer etcetera. Really I'm a fan of most Star Trek ships. I think it's really fun to imagine different characters in relationships.

I started watching Star Trek in 2021, and in that time I've finished these series:

I'm currently on season 3 of Voyager.

While I love Star Trek, it's not the only thing I'm interested in. Some other things I like are:

I'm not fully versed in all these subjects even though I do really like them, so forgive me if I mess up facts about them or don't have a fully rounded view of them all.

Jack is my favorite character, I think he's really underappreciated, so here's a section in my about me dedicated to him and why I like him. I related to Jack heavily, I see a lot of my traits reflected in him and find comfort seeing a character similar to me. A central part to what makes a character likeable is seeing emotional similarities in them, allowing for catharsis in the viewer. I find these similarities in Jack. He's a good place for me to place my more irrational thoughts, into a little contained pod of a character. I've been focused on Jack since about February 2022. In this time I've watched Statistical Probabilities and Chrysalis over 100 times combined, read nearly every fanfiction involving the members of the Jack Pack, and read every official novel/short story containing them with the exception of the Typhon Pact books past the first and the Section 31 novels. I've also photo-scanned the pages of the DS9 Companion and the DS9 Technical handbook pertaining to the Jack Pack. My sketchbook is full of portrait art of Jack. My inner voice sounds like Jack most of the time. Not only do I find emotional catharsis (also the name of a song I heavily associate with Jack btw) in Jack, I also find him a motivating character for me. Whenever I feel like not doing work or self-improvement, I think about Jack and I find a new eagerness to power through whatever I might be hung up on. I also find a sense of confidence from him. Since I view genetic engineering (in the episode of Statistical Probabilities and Chrysalis at the very least) as an allegory for autism, when Jack talks about finding pride in his genetic identity I can draw a sort of pride in my autism from that as well.

i have never spent so long deciding who i should ask this for only to revert to my single most predictable answer asjdbdisks. anyhow, ⚡ + nina zenik my beloved, please? 💜

1-3 random headcanons i have about them:

nina absolutely lives and breathes for gossip. blame it on her collecting gossip as part of being a spy. blame it on her growing up in the clique-y little palace. blame it on whatever you please, but know that nina zenik knows every rumor about you and has no qualms starting some herself if need be. but also know that she hears everything about her friends... and she will not hesitate to track the rumor all the way back to it's source...

idk and idc if this directly contradicts canon, but nina doesn't like tea. there, i said it. she just.... doesn't understand the hype. it's just sad water, and literally everyone has Opinions on how to make it correctly. the kaelish put an ungodly amount of milk in their tea yet it always tastes stronger than everywhere else, the ravkans have strict rules about when to use jam or honey or sugar to sweeten it and saints forbid you get it wrong, the shu make tea making a very lengthy process but also manage to put nothing of interest in it to make it taste substanial, and the kerch are always complaining that their tea is too cold while the zemeni don't like it hot. why does tea need to be so complicated???? who decided to make a beverage wherein everyone is upset at the quality, and everyone is displeased??? you would think it would be some kind of relief to her that the fjerdans don't really bother with tea much, but it's 10x worse, actually, because they're constantly saying how their traditional beverages are better, when nina actually thinks it's worse.

an au or fanfiction trope i think the character would do well in:

a fake dating scenario would actually be so fun with her. you could either spin it so that it's your average "oh, no, i'm visiting my (grisha) family for the holidays and they're so annoying about my still being single after a really bad breakup, so will you just do me a favor and pretend? i'll make you coffee and buy you gifts??" of course, on the way to ravka, nina picks up the rest of the crows, and half of the battle is convincing jesper and wylan to not say a single word about this fake dating situation - nina is dangerous and will gladly take revenge. the other half of the battle, of course, is when nina starts to fall for you (which both kaz and inej can sense - no doubt they even placed a bet on whether or not nina will confess by the end of the trip), and she can sense you're falling for her too. but (*dramatic rom com voice*) is she ready to fall in love again???? or, lol, you could add some spice to the trope and make the fake dating also an undercover au wherein nina needs to infiltrate a group of really influential people for ravkan buisiness, and you just so happen to be a lowkey ravkan supporter. of course, you and nina no doubt have political differences or some kind of moral clash, creating friction between the two of you - maybe she thinks your quiet support isn't enough and brands you a coward, while you think her self-importance is annoying. the issue, then, is when the only way for nina get her to reasonably rub elbows with these people without garnering suspicion is to pretend to be your fiancee. you get to bicker like a married couple, and gossip about people while infiltrating their inner circle, and you end up learning so much about each other that oh no.... your feelings have moved past respect now, haven't they? and wouldn't you like it if nina just... stayed?

where they should be taken on a date or relaxing day off:

honestly, give nina something classy and relaxing! take her to a nice dinner and then go to the opera! be a little fancy! she will make scathing remarks about the rich, but will enjoy getting to dress in style and pretend to be anything other than struggling for just a little while. afterward, you can walk down to the Geldcanal and look out at the water. have a meaningful chat, wallow for a bit in your mutual self-pity, and then tell raucous jokes that aren't even really that funny, but somehow your laughing anyway.

My parents are obsessed with this movie (I am too, consequently). We’ve held annual watching parties for The Princess Bride for as long as I can remember, and Rodents of Unusual Size are frequently referenced in our household 😂 It’s the absolute epitome of a perfect movie

2. While You Were Sleeping (1995)

I’m not a huge rom-com person, but I absolutely adore While You Were Sleeping. It never fails to make me laugh, and it gives me the biggest warm, fuzzy feelings 💜

3. Twilight (2008)

So, so painfully bad, but so good. It’s the ultimate comfort movie, and I force my wife to watch it with me regularly

I literally cannot think of anymore movies I watch regularly (I’m much more of a tv person) so I’ll just leave it at this 😂

Given the extensive reading I have to do for college (English major) and my obsession with HP fanfiction, I haven’t read many books for pleasure over the past few years 😂 So here are two of my favorite novels from classes I’ve taken!

1. Roxana: or, the Fortunate Mistress by Daniel Defoe (1724)

I read this a few weeks ago, and I actually did my midterm essay on a queer reading of Roxana. It’s very fucked up, and very interesting

2. Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë (1847)

I also finished this a few weeks ago, and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked it!

It’s a municipal local history museum for the area I live in, of the kind that every city in Ontario has lmao so not the ROM or anything cool like that. And I’m not the curator, I do a bit of everything/whatever the curator tells me to do lmao. So I do research and curatorial/collections tasks but I also do front desk and membership and visitor services, I have a catch-all kind of job. Hopefully at some point I’ll move up but I’m happy where I am right now, because the lack of major responsibility means I can spend more time thinking about fanfiction

For the first time since I started counting my fics back in April of 2020, Bughead was not the pairing that I’ve read the most. That’s a little trippy for me. Perhaps a reread of some of my favourite Buggie Authors’ collections are in order.

Eight Nights by @happilyshanghaied​  (Nancy/Ace - E, 8 fics) - There are not enough Hanukkah fics out there and this is just a delight! I first read this series in January... and then again in February (my first re-read of the year, in fact). The funny thing is, because I don’t watch the show, I have no prior opinions of the characters and how they behave other than what I read in fics. My wonderful and talented friend wrote the first Nancy and Ace that I’d ever read and now I compare every other Nace fic I read to hers... hers are still the best. 😉

The first computer I ever had was originally my grandfather’s. It was 2001, and I was 11. My grandfather had just upgraded to a nicer computer, and he gave me his old one. It was a large desktop that ran on Windows 95 and did not have the ability to connect to the internet. It sat on the desk in my bedroom. I used it for various Solitaire games (Solitaire Classic, Spider Solitaire, Free Cell, Hearts, Minesweeper, all good games to play while listening to my CBC radio shows and folk music, because that was my childhood), and Microsoft Word.

Any time I wrote something that I wanted to put on the internet, I saved it to a floppy disk, brought that disk to the family computer in my mother’s room (the only computer in the house besides mine, and the only one with internet access), and posted it from there. This could be a fanfiction story, because I did that. Or just a long message board post. Because yes, I did write message board posts that were long enough to be worth writing out in Word before posting them (which should not come as a surprise to anyone who has read any of this blog). Many of them were passionate defences of my ships and attacks on rival ships, backed up with properly cited quotes from the text. 

Not everything I wrote on that old computer was meant for the internet. I also wrote literally hundreds of pages of journal entries as I tried to figure out my life and the lives of those around me and why I didn’t have friends or understand any of the things that it seemed everyone else understood about how to interact with people (the Asperger’s diagnosis didn’t happen until a few years later). And sometimes I just wrote about the music I liked or my cat or whatever. And I used it for school work, writing my assignments in my bedroom and then taking them via floppy disk to my mother’s room, because her computer was also the only one connected to a printer.

I got my second computer when I was sixteen and my paternal grandmother died; I used the inheritance money to pay for most of a new laptop (I feel weird saying the exact number, but the amount was most of the price of a laptop in 2006). This laptop connected to the internet in my parents’ house, which was very exciting. I took all the folders on my old computer and saved them to a CD-ROM, because the world had moved on from floppy disks by then. I put the CD in my new laptop, and transferred all the files. I put them in a folder called “old stuff”, and put that folder inside my new documents folder.

I kept doing that for a long time. I get a new computer every few years (I make them last as long as I can, but I am the sort of introvert who asks a lot of my laptop due to a preference for my own bedroom over just about anywhere else, and that wears them down), and when I do, I put the folders from my previous computer in a new folder called “old stuff” and save that in my new documents folder. I then mostly forget about it, but very occasionally had cause to want to look at an old file, and was glad to have them there.

I kept doing that until a few years ago, when I got a new computer, and this “old stuff” folder had gotten so big (because of all the folders within the folders, each “old stuff” folder having another folder containing the “old stuff” from the previous computer) that I couldn’t justify using all the disk space it would take up on my new computer. So I just left it on my old computer. I didn’t have a backup storage device big enough for it at the time, so my solution was to just keep the computer. My computer was old and working very badly, only had half a screen and the cursor stopped moving after it had been on for ten minutes, but it could still technically be accessed. So I figured I’d still have the entire collection of files in case I ever needed them. Besides that, I just picked out a few files that I knew would be important and transferred them, leaving the rest.

A couple of weeks ago, I broke my laptop and bought a new one. With the new laptop, I got a good deal on an external hard drive with lots of space (in addition to being able to just take the hard drive from my old computer and turn it into an external hard drive, which is awesome and I’m so happy that technology exists now). So as part of setting up my new laptop with all the files I want, I decided to go into that old, barely working computer that’s still at the bottom of a cupboard in my desk (the same desk, incidentally, on which I kept my first computer in 2001 – this thing has lasted me twenty years, and it’s great). I took the whole documents folder, with its “old stuff” subfolder and the “old stuff” sub-folder within that and then a few more, and I put it all on my new external hard drive. And now I’ve plugged it into my new laptop, and I’m having a great time looking through it.

Clicking on “old stuff” in one folder after another feels like digging deeper and deeper into a tunnel that goes back through my life. It’s honestly really interesting and I’m so glad I’ve thought to do this. There is fanfiction. There are journal entries written by me at ages 12, 13, 14, 15, 16. There is poetry. So far I have actually opened very little of it, because I know that what I find inside will be full of what kids who were born after some of those documents were written describe as “cringe”. But that is what I’m going to do with my night tonight: manage to convince myself to open some of those files. There might have to be whiskey involved in this process.

Canon: Part 2 - The Relationship

There were plenty of reasons not to keep him, aside from the biggest one being, well, he isn't the equerry that was ordered.

He seemed to have no knowledge of how anything worked with respect to royal protocol and all the restrictions and outright classism that comes with it. He did not know his place, nor did he care to stay in it once he found it. He was not beholden to anyone, since he didn't even go here. Other members of staff, particularly the Queen's equerry, take issue with this more than Prince Philip does; in fact he finds it very refreshing. His view is that as long as his assistant gets things done on time and correct, keeps out of trouble, and doesn't embarrass him while in public, not much else matters to him.

The sailor's wardrobe was an issue. Being that he had very little when he arrived, he had no "proper" clothes aside from the uniforms in his seabag. Unless something important was going on, or important people were due to arrive, he was seen in civilian clothes, which suffice to say do not meet the standards of what was expected. That's not to say he doesn't care about his appearance, moreso that everyday is "casual Friday." While Prince Philip wasn't entirely pleased with this, he accepted he could do nothing about it, unless he wanted to provide his assistant with a session with his tailor, which wasn't something he was willing to do at this point. Eventually he got used to it, and even began to appreciate the personality that began to shine through his assistant's interesting collection of T-shirts. A push for more suitable attire never came from him.

Despite these egregious faults, as they got to know one another, Prince Philip took a liking to the sailor. They both have a similar sense of humor, enjoy a good pint, and of course there is the bond of naval service they share. He also made decent coffee (a task he was strangely satisfied to carry out). If we're being honest, the Duke appreciates (and enjoys) the fact that his assistant cannot be tamed; it allows for some personal satisfaction and a needed break-up of the mind numbing monotony of dealing with "the mustaches."

There was always mutual respect, and naturally it evolved from a strictly professional relationship to that of shipmates, and then, in a weird turn of events neither can explain, full on relationshipping. This isn't a rom-com though, and there was a lot of work on both sides to get it to work. The sailor came with some baggage due to having had a rather traumatic experience and still dealt with the physical and mental effects of it, which he struggles with, though less so than he initially did. He also had to learn the work flow of the Palace, both in general and within Prince Philip's own staff. In turn, Prince Philip had to learn how best to manage his assistant's quirks, and how to best defuse a situation in which he'd gotten too much "into his head."

The turning point in all of this was Prince Philip's 1956/57 solo tour, which allows for a lotof this "getting to know each other *wink wink nudge nudge*" to happen.

And the sailor just...stayed.

Despite being such a popular Nintendo character, Waluigi has never had a game to call his own. But a new Super Mario 64 ROM hack, Waluigi’s Taco Stand, finally corrects this grave injustice.

This new N64 game is the work of renowned Super Mario 64 modder Kaze Emanuar. They’ve made a number of mods, including the recent mash-up Super Zelda 64: Ocarina of Time.

Waluigi’s Taco Stand is based on a fanfiction of the same name.

After blowing all his coins at the local casino, Waluigi is unable to make his rent. To repay his debt and avoid eviction, he must run his Koopa Troopa landlord’s taco stand.

But it’s not a case of simply handing over tacos to hungry customers. For every single order a sombrero-wearing Waluigi must enter a mini-level and personally source the ingredients.

Customers are very picky. So it’s important to remember what they’ve ordered. If you don’t collect exactly what they ask for, you’ll have to do the whole order again.

The game is set across four stages. As you make more tacos, you’ll rank up and progress to the next stage.

Unsurprisingly, Waluigi’s Taco Stand plays almost exactly like Super Mario 64. Waluigi has the same innate jump and attack abilities. He can also use the classic Wing Cap power-up.

However, Waluigi’s clearly superior physical prowess has not been forgotten. He can’t take any damage from enemies or falling great heights. What a champ!

Free-range ingredients

Searching for taco fillings is fairly straightforward. Tomatoes and lettuces are found in the ground, whereas meat ingredients come from enemy creatures.

If you ever thought beef came from cows then you’re wrong – it’s actually Goombas. Slightly more worrying is the fact that Goombas also endorse cannibalism, given how many of them order beef tacos at the stand.

Some ingredients are surprisingly tricky to get hold of. To source chicken, for example, you have to use the Wing Cap and fly into a Klepto.

Once you’ve collected every item you need, you can then choose to serve the taco using the pause menu.

Waluigi’s Taco Stand is short, simple and endearingly silly. It re-uses a lot of Super Mario 64’s assets, but also includes music and sound effects from other N64 games, such as Mario Kart 64 and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

Best of all, there are plenty of Waluigi voice clips to give the game a truly authentic feel. There’s more than enough “WAH” factor here.

How can I play Waluigi’s Taco Stand?

You must download the files and patch them to a clean ROM of Super Mario 64.

You can find a link to the files in the Waluigi’s Taco Stand launch video description. However, you will have to find the Super Mario 64 ROM elsewhere. This may be a bit difficult as many ROM sites are currently closing down.

The video below provides an overview of the patching process. The Waluigi’s Taco Stand download files include patching software, so you don’t need to source this separately.

Will it run on original hardware?

Yes! This is one of the very few Kaze Emanuar mods that actually works on original N64 hardware.

It’s nice to see Nintendo’s hugely under-represented anti-hero get the sort of attention he deserves. And that fact it’s on the N64 – the very console where Waluigi made his first appearance – makes it all the better.
