Favorite movie
Robin Buckley x female reader
Tw: mentions of homophobia, not proofread, using of y/n
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
„You will never know, if she maybe likes you, if you never ask her to hang out“ she hears Steve‘s voice from the back. Her eyes rolling at the statement from her best friend. „It’s not that easy, Harrington, just imagine, we hang out. I make a move, she is straight and then I will be known as the disgusting lesbian all over the city“
She was right, and he knew, but if he has to hear Robin talk about her crush on this girl for much longer, he will freak out. „Robin, you know I am not the smartest person, but she so has a thing for you, even a blind person could see“
Again, he was right. Y/n has been openly flirting with her, everytime she came to pick out a new movie. Last time she was at Family video, he almost vomited because of the way she looked at his colleague. All the flirting going right over her head.
Robin was about to make another snarky comment but was interrupted by the front door opening. The unfamiliar face walking in with a big smile. „Talking of the devil“ Steve murmured after seeing y/n entering the store, turning back around leaving the register to leave them both behind.
„Hey Robin“ her beautiful, red coated lips spoke and Robin swore, her heart started beating even faster. She looked as gorgeous as ever, wearing a long, flowy skirt, plastered with flowers. „Hey y/n“ Robin stammered after a silence that was way to long and awkward in her opinion.
Her lips curled into a smile, hearing Robins flustered words from the place she was standing. She would never admit to anyone, too scared of being judged, but she probably had the biggest crush on the girl, working at family video.
„Can I help you with anything?“ Robin asked coming out from behind the register to stand next to the other girl. It had been a slow day, only having two other customers besides her crush. „You know, I was wondering, what is your favorite movie?“ the question came as a surprise. Robin has been asked this question by many customers before her, but somehow hearing those words out of her mouth, it felt different, special. Like she really cared about her opinion on movies.
„That is a Good question, it actually is“ her words were stopped after feeling y/n‘s hand reach for hers. Visibly flustered she looked down at the girls hand, her red painted nails wrapping around her wrist. „Why don‘t you just show me, which one it is?“
Still overwhelmed by the touch of her crush, she slowly made her way into the direction of her favorite tape. Her hand never leaving her wrist while she followed the cute girl. „This is it“ handing her the movie, whilst looking at her face for a reaction.
Scanning the cover, her lips curled up into a beautiful smile. „Great, I’ll take this“ she said handing the tape back to Robin. They both made their way to the register, to get the movie checked out. „Here you go“ Robin said putting the movie back into her perfectly manicured hands. „Tell me how you liked it when you watched it, I am very excited to hear about your opinion“
„Maybe, we could watch this movie together“ y/n said in a small voice, taking all of her courage to ask this question. Almost missing the small whisper, Robins eyes went wide. „Yes, yes I would love to“ she blurted out a little too loud. A smile making its way on both of their lips, „how about you come over to mine tonight“ she added, hoping not to weird her out. Nodding her head yes, Robin slowly took a pen and started to write her address on her delicate arm. Both of them sharing another smile. „Can’t wait“
Still not able to believe what just happened, she just stood there, watching the girl leaving the store hurriedly. „Told you“ Steve came creeping up behind her, scaring her whilst doing so. Robin only being able to smile, having nothing to add to that.
A few hours later, Robin was already wating patiently for the girl to arrive at her house. She had prepared popcorn, got all the drinks she thought that y/n would like and laid blankets out on her couch. Glady her parents had been out for the night so, she didn’t have to worry about them.
The ring of the doorbell took her out of her thoughts, she wasted no time running to the front door. And there she stood, her long hair bunched up into a bun on top of her head, wearing an oversized sweater and some gray sweatpants, her smile bigger than ever.
They got in and wasted no time getting to watch the movie. Robin could tell, y/n really liked the movie she picked out, the both of them discussing the things that happened and sharing some laughs at the funny scenes. As the movie took its end, both of them were sitting super close to each other, not wanting the evening to end.
„How about we watch another movie, I still have a horror movie I picked up weeks ago“ the short haired girl suggested. Y/n really wasn’t a big fan of scary movies, but she could never turn down the pretty girls suggestion.
The movie started and y/n felt herself getting super anxious, unknowingly starting to scoot even closer to the other girl. Robin on the other hand couldn’t pay attention to the movie as she felt her get closer to her. „Do you want me to turn it off?“ she asked calmly.
Shaking her head, not wanting to disappoint her, straightening herself up again. „It’s fine, don’t worry about me“ y/n let out with a shaky breath. Robin could tell she was scared, so she scooted closer to the frightened girl. This was it, she would risk it all, she thought.
Taking all of her courage, she took her arm and put it around the other girls shoulder. Y/n froze, thinking that she fucked it up, Robin was ready to pull her arm back, but suddenly, she could feel the girl leaning into her side, getting comfortable against her body. Too scared to say anything, Robin just enjoyed the closeness to her crush. A few moments later she could actually feel her falling asleep against her.
As the movie was over, Robin shook the girls body slightly to wake her up. Probably still in her dream state, y/n only wrapped her hands around the other girls body, making it impossible for Robin to make another move. Not wanting to bother the girl even more, she just decided to cuddle up against her and lay with her on the couch, that was actually way to small to fit both of them.
At that moment, Robin couldn’t care less about what was going to happen, when y/n was going to wake up, this was too good to be ended. Pushing away all of her negative thoughts, she fell asleep with the girl, she had such a big crush on, knowing, that it was probably not the last time, the both of them would end up sleeping with each other.

You can find part one of this headcanon that I should really just fic at this point (but won't because that's a commitment I will 100% abandon 120k words in when there's still 10 more chapters to go) here.
Have some more "Eddie befriends a concussed Steve after season 2 headcanons-that-are-basically-fic-at-this-point"
Steve gives himself two blissful weeks of Eddie Time before he starts his job hunt, and Eddie pouts about it like the world is coming to an end. Offers to pay for Steve's gas and insurance himself because he really, really enjoys the bubble they've built themselves full of kissing and fucking and talking until six in the morning about nothing and everything and Eddie is only marginally more well-adjusted than Steve is about Love.
"Sure, yeah, my dad throws a fit because I don't get into college, and you think he'll react to 'hey in the same vein, I'm also a raging homo and my drug dealer boyfriend wants me to be his kept man' with anything but violence."
Eddie rants about capitalist greed while Steve gathers applications from shops in the mall, glares at the Sam Goody sign going up and doesn't shut up about how fucking stupid he thinks the mall is the entire drive home, but he changes his tune the first time Steve tries on his uniform. Then immediately rethinks that idea because "Steven, I will pay you to quit right now and keep the uniform, no one else is allowed to see this much thigh on display on the daily, these are my slutty thighs."
Robin nearly quits the first time Scoops has a staff meeting and she finds Steve Harrington lounging in the backroom in the stupid fucking outfit they all have to wear. Begs not to be put on shift with him and then isn't super surprised when she checks the schedule and nearly all of the shifts with Buckley listed have Harrington right next to them, because absolutely fuck her life.
He's kind of a fucking dweeb, if she's being honest, and way less of a flirt than she remembers him being, and every time he strikes out with a pretty girl (because of fucking course she notices exactly how cute they all are) he doesn't actually seem all that put out about it and sort of laughs at her little You Suck marks like there's a joke she's just not in on, which is categorically unfair.
And - he's weird, actually, the more she thinks about it, because sometimes Robin will go on a tangent about a band she's into who just put out a shit album, and Steve will nod along like he knows a thing or two about the band in question (but he can't because this particular bands music is super fucking queer and they're not popular, certainly not in goddamn Hawkins), or she'll start in on one of the popular girls from school once the girl leaves the shop and Steve will tell Robin fucking secrets about all the dumb shit his old crew used to get up to and he'll whisper all the embarrassing stories he has about them like she's a good buddy and he's always secretly wanted to gossip about those dickheads.
And, like, the one thing they do actually have in common is their attraction to girls, not that she's ever telling him that, only - only once, some dude from the jazzercise class came in and Robin is seventy-three percent sure she caught Steve checking out the guys ass when he left, which - no way. Right? He'd just zoned out, or something.
As it turns out she actually kind of enjoys being around Steve, who seems to have a few working braincells beneath all that hair and is surprisingly funny when he's not thinking too hard about it and hangs out with the weirdest people, like - Robin could have tossed the names of the entire population of Hawkins into a bowl and pulled out names at random and still wouldn't have chosen a weirder group of people for The Hair Harrington.
She can't decide if the more inexplicable is the revolving door of children who come to visit him nearly daily and often charm a free cone or a sneak through the backdoor to the theater - or the trio of metalheads here nearly as often. Eddie Munson buys them all cups of ice cream and then they sit in the corner booth menacing terrified suburban moms and hounding Steve until his break and then Steve saunters over with a dopey little grin on his face and argues with Gareth E for five full minutes about something that makes Munson boom in laughter.
And - okay, so Robin is firmly in the closet where she's safe and so is everyone else queer in Hawkins but Munson's never actually denied all the snide comments that get tossed his way and you can't ever assume but like - he doesn't exactly hide the way he ogles Steve Harrington in his stupid uniform and Steve - notices? She thinks he notices. He'd have to be an idiot not to notice, she thinks, but then - well, he's definitely an idiot because sometimes when he gets up at the end of his break Munson shoots a pining look his way and gets an elbow in the ribs from Jeff or Gareth and Robin is actually like a little desperate to know how the hell that particular dynamic was struck up but there's no way she's letting Harrington know he intrigues her.
Eddie learns about the You Rule You Suck board and has a minor freak out about it while pacing a hole into Jeff's bedroom carpet because "He's bi, Jeff, and Buckley's totally his fucking type, they spend literally all day together, Jeff, he's going to leave me for a band nerd, Jeff." and Jeff has to remind Eddie that Steve is ass over tits in love with Eddie and spends every moment not at his literal job either carting around his merry band of kiddos or with Eddie.
Eddie demands secrecy from Jeff about the freakout and Jeff crosses the fingers of one hand behind his back as he runs his fingers over his lips like a zipper, so the moment Eddie leaves, Jeff calls Steve to give him the scoop, and maybe Steve lays it on a little extra thick and does some stupidly romantic shit but it's not like that's far out of his wheelhouse, he romances the fuck out of Eddie whenever he can and Eddie totally knows Jeff spilled his secrets but actually this is sort of okay too.
Eddie picks Henderson up the day he gets back from camp, drives him over to the mall and gets caught by Buckley making cow eyes at Steve when Steve and Henderson get to the lightsaber part of their little handshake.
And. Okay. Sure, Eddie's always kinda figured there was more to the story behind Steve's journey into Being A Better Person but he didn't expect the Russians.
So, when it all goes to hell in a hand basket Eddie's tucked in the backroom of Scoops with the rest of them listening to a Russian recording and handing a coin off to Steve so he can listen to the sound of the Indiana Flyer and -
Fucking. Russians?
And then they're sneaking into a secret base because they got trapped in a secret elevator, and they're sneaking through an underground lab and the Russians are boring a hole into the inside of the world and "Babe, we don't really have time for Twenty Questions when RUSSIANS ARE CHASING US but I promise I'll tell you all about it if I make it outta here alive." and it's the sort of ridiculous bullshit he'd throw into a campaign if the players were really pissing him off so of course, of course they get separated, and Eddie nearly bites Dustin's head off trying to figure out how they're gonna fucking save Steve and Robin.
Steve goads the torture guy into fucking him up so he lays off Robin and Robin is high as shit but like, she knows, okay, she knows what he did for her and that's.
"Have you ever been in love?" Robin asks later, after she's already sort of laid her heart out hoping he won't stomp on it and Steve doesn't hesitate.
"Yep. Nancy Wheeler," and he mimes a gunshot to the heart, makes the sound effect because even though he's found something different and heartstoppingly epic, sometimes that still stings. "And-" but Robin's scoffing and calling Nancy a priss so Steve gets sidetracked from telling Robin he's head over fucking heels for Eddie goddamn Munson. For a second, anyway.
"Are you still in love with Nancy?"
"No."
"Why not?"
Because - because the sun shines out of Eddie Munson's ass and Eddie looks at him like Steve hung the moon and the stars and because somewhere along his journey of self discovery he realized how very much he wanted to love and be loved in return and that Nancy probably was never gonna be the person to share that with him the way he wanted, and damn the world and his parents and his former shitty friends for thinking there's anything wrong with that but also - shit, he likes Robin, thinks she's great, thinks maybe if things were different he'd probably be harboring a terrible fucking crush on her but that doesn't mean she's gonna want to stick around once she finds out he's already planning out the rest of his life with the metalhead she barely tolerates hanging out in the store until closing time three nights a week.
So he tells her about this person he's super into and how weird and cool and so not the type of person he would have gone for in high school they are, and she goes quiet, and he slides under the stall and settles his weight across from her and she's looking at him like she's terrified and - yeah, okay, yep, this fucking sucks. Anyone else who already knows had learned how to not be shitheads about it from Eddie long before Steve had his revelation, or they'd never been the type of people to judge that kind of thing anyway and - and he'd told Gareth that Eddie was worth the hassle and he is but this sucks.
And.
And then she's telling him about how she'd hated him because Tammy Thompson was obsessed with him and - and it takes more time than he's proud of for everything to sort of click in his head but he's got at least a few broken ribs and he's pretty sure that stinging feeling in the side of his skull is gonna amount to another fucking concussion so at least he's got a hookup for good weed - "But Tammy Thompson's a girl," comes out of his mouth anyway and he blinks half a second later because - holy shit. Holy shit.
Because if she - and he - and Steve laughs and calls Tammy Thompson a muppet but then he's laughing harder and pointing to himself and saying "Listen, okay listen, Eddie - Eddie Munson, yeah, I didn't say it earlier because - I didn't mean you, Buckley, I meant Eddie."
And - he'd called Eddie babe and Robin hadn't really noticed it at the time because, like, running away from Russians but - god she's been an idiot because if she'd paid a lick of attention she probably could have put two and two together, like Steve eying the lines on the You Suck board with a secret smile and Steve leaping over the counter like a showoff every time he took his break with Eddie right there across the way, like Eddie leaning across the counter and pressing a finger against the skin and hair on display above the line of Steve's uniform shirt , like Steve blowing off a cute girl to lean across the counter and call Eddie a nerd wasn't the gayest shit imaginable.
And then Eddie and Dustin and Erica are pushing through the bathroom door and Robin is cackling and the comedown from Russian truth drugs is gonna suck but maybe Eddie will smoke them both up if they survive the rest of the night.
---
Eddie doesn't call him out on attempting vehicular manslaughter because he'd seen how fucking long it took Steve to actually recover from the last go 'round with Billy Hargrove, and when the dust settles and they're all sort of reeling because - because Hopper was like a superhero, alright, and they've got an actual superhero in their midst but Hopper-
Eddie and Robin sit across from each other on the end of Steve's bed and Steve drinks his water and tries not to whine too much about the fact that Eddie is taking Robin at her word that they should at least make sure he's not gonna die of a brain bleed before they get him high and then they're laughing about the fact that Eddie was fully fucking convinced Robin was gonna steal Steve out from under his nose and it's - they wake him up once an hour as soon as he starts to nap and Steve's pretty sure they're just gossiping about Steve half the time but he doesn't mind that much.
Because Robin's, like, the best, the best person and the best friend and just the best thing, and she's gonna hate it so much that Steve trusts her because she's going to hear so many truly horrible things about how stupid in love with Eddie Munson Steve is but it's important to Steve that Eddie and Robin give a shit about one another and if they've gotta bond over his ability to injure the shit out of himself any time he's given the chance then he'll nurse his bruised ribs and grin dopily every time Eddie leans over to place a fresh pack of frozen peas on his eye.
---
Robin isn't sure she's ready for anyone else to know and Steve gets that, he totally does, because the few minutes he'd thought she'd judge him for the person he's given his whole heart to were the worst minutes of his life. Gareth clocks her in about two days anyway, keeps it to himself until he can't stand the awkward silences every time Robin and Steve get handsy and they realize it and leap away from one another but it's the same kind of handsy Eddie gets with the band when he's feeling a little lonely and he knows he can trust them to not be total fucking dickheads about it.
"How is it that the only totally hetero one is the only one with a fucking gaydar?" Jeff asks and - okay, so the thing is maybe watching Eddie and Steve fall in love made him realize a few things and he's - well, Hawkins is small and close minded and until Steve he hadn't realized that liking both was a thing you could do.
At the end of the summer Steve arranges a trip up to Indy and Robin has to make up a ridiculous lie to her parents about a camping trip with a few of the band kids because there's zero fucking way they're letting her go up to the city with four fucking dudes but she pulls it off and only has like, two freak outs about being in a club full of women who are also into women.
Babyfaced Gareth is a hit and Jeff definitely maybe makes out with a dude in the alley when he steps out for a cigarette and Steve makes Eddie dance with him until Eddie complains his toes are bleeding and it's actually kind of a perfect night, a perfect trip, a perfect way to end the summer.
Steve and Eddie take turns driving Robin to school in the mornings and Robin couldn't explain to a single soul how they've become the most important people she's ever had in her corner but the thing is she doesn't really have to, because that noise is for people who haven't seen Russians try to jumpstart the apocalypse, haven't been administered torture drugs by horror-movie looking 'doctors', haven't gotten their asses handed to them to protect one another.
By mid November Steve calls a meeting of Gareth and the Gays because Robin's crushing hard on a redhead from band and as previously established only one of them has a working gaydar. Gareth takes all of thirty seconds watching Robin and Vickie interact before he's giving her a thumbs up from across the gym.
---
Gareth fucking hates how catchy Gareth and the Gays is.

Platonic with a capital "P" [soulmate AU pilot/teaser]
Part 2 | Read on Ao3
A: Platonic
”Hiding one’s soul mark is a practice exhibited in about 10% of the US population. Among the research group, over 70% prefer to share their mark after forming a relationship naturally. About 15% had lost their soulmate and covered their mark in an expression of grief, and about 10% claim not to believe in soulmates at all.” - A modern look at soulmates, J. Dirk
Robin Buckley hid her birthmark for another reason. She would only show it to someone in the quiet of a bedroom, with no one else to see, to judge. Because while a lot of people believed the universe was never wrong, just as many believed it could. That sometimes, it corrupts you from birth, leaving you with a “broken” bond, a mistake.
And the latter kind liked to congregate in places like Hawkins.
Robin Buckley hid it because she didn’t want something like her own birthmark to out her before she was ready. For someone to see the same pattern on two girls and put two and two together.
Her mark was located on her hip, usually covered by the waistband of her jeans or a shirt, but just to be safe, every morning she would put a band-aid over it for an extra layer of protection.
Recently, she felt like putting on another one. Maybe even wrapping some gauze around it for an extra measure. Sometimes, after a shift at Scoops, when the nights were incredibly dark and the mirror brutally honest, when the guilt and betrayal and wrongness of it all became too much, she would think about putting a razor to her skin, cutting out the offending piece of flesh.
She was betrayed by the universe twice in her short teenage life. Once when she was born a lesbian in a homophobic little town. Again, when it shoved Steve Harrington into her life.
Robin usually avoided looking at other people’s marks. It was rude when she was hiding her own, could rub people the wrong way. She also didn’t like to play matchmaker for straight people, and didn’t like the pang of jealousy she felt when her peers found their soulmate. It was rare to happen at their age, but not unheard of.
And if she sneaked a peek, it was never a dude. She would take glances if she saw a cute girl, sue her. She would if she suspected the other was queer. As if it was a sealed deal then, because if there was another queer girl in Hawkins she must be Robin’s soulmate, right?
So when Steve Harrington arrived for their first shift together in his everyday clothes, she didn’t look. Then he emerged in his sailor uniform, the sleeves longer than in his polos, and she thought that was it.
“Do you think they’ll let me cut it?” he asked a couple of weeks into his employment. Their training was finally done, and they could be left without a supervisor for a lazy morning shift.
Robin flipped a page in her magazine and gave him an unimpressed look.
“You’re supposed to be working here, not fishing for your soulmate,” she clicked her tongue in disapproval.
Steve scoffed, taking on his mom stance like he was disappointed in Robin.
“Looking for your soulmate is a full-time job, Buckley.”
“It’s not a job,” she lowered the magazine to properly gawk at his stupidity. “This,” she motioned around them, at the nautical-themed ice cream parlour, ”pays the bills.’’
“And this,” Steve points at his shoulder, which Robin thought looked incredibly stupid, “gets me the love of my life.”
Robin rolled her eyes.
“I hope she takes you away from here.”
Steve huffed, turning at the sound of opening doors to see new customers come in.
“Please. You love working with me,” he said before turning towards the counter to do his job, for a change.
Robin scrunched her nose because he was right, she unfortunately did. But Steve’s ego was big enough already, so she would never admit it out loud.
Steve Harrington was nothing like what she expected based on high school tales. He had a bunch of kids following him around, bothering him at work and demanding car rides. His previously famous flirting game was so off it quickly became a joke between them, with a whiteboard score and all. Steve scoffs at it and rolls his eyes and flips her off, but there's a playful glimmer in his eyes that gives him away. How pleased he is to be there with her and bicker. They start scheduling their shifts together, and Robin never thought before that a summer job could be this fun.
She watched Steve do the little dorky handshake with Dustin, and for the first time since she came to terms with her sexuality wondered what was under Steve’s sleeve. She never felt this fond of a boy before. Was she wrong all along?
“Where’s yours?” Steve asked her one day, leaning on the counter with this glazed-over look in his eyes he got whenever he was thinking about his “ten kids and a wife” fantasy. A big family of five just left their store.
“My hip,” she answered easily. She could give him this much.
He looked down at her waist, his eyes swept fleetingly over her body, and it left an unpleasant taste in her mouth.
There was a moment of silence, Robin letting Steve think about his next words, hoping he’d choose them wisely.
“Have you shown anyone?” A relatively safe question.
Robin was shaking her head before he was finished.
“No.”
“Why?”
She rolled her eyes at his confused frown.
“I’m not a fan of crop tops. Not everyone has such a convenient arm mark, Harrington.”
“Fair,” he shrugged, looking away. If he was trying to coax Robin into showing him his mark, he could murder her right now. Sometimes the marks were shown in obituaries.
Instead of prying, he let out a low chuckle and looked back at her.
“Do you know why I applied here?”
“Because you wanted a job, and we were conveniently hiring?” she quirked an eyebrow. Steve elbowed her, but she moved fast enough to avoid most of the impact.
“Well, yes, but also… It might sound dumb,” and oh, Robin never heard him shy before. Even when the girls were ignoring him, he oozed confidence and just moved from one flirting attempt to another. She didn’t like where this was going. “My mark looks kind of like an anchor. It felt like a sign.”
Robin froze all over. She was so bad at controlling her face, at hiding her emotions. That's why she was such a shut-in. One wrong gesture or word, and she would be outed, a pariah, and shit, Steve’s eyes were widening, she was so fucked. He rose his hand to his left arm.
“Do you wanna see?”
Instead of answering, she took a look around the empty parlour and grabbed his wrist to pull him to the backroom.
“Steve-” she started, turning towards him. He was pulling up his sleeve, and she made a distressed sound, covering her eyes. “Steve!” She was panicking now. Because she knew what she was gonna see. A wonky crossbow that could be interpreted as an anchor. Her eyes prickled, and her heart thudded hard in her chest.
Steve was the opposite, his voice soft and dreamy, infuriatingly calm as he was spouting love-drunk nonsense about Robin, of all people. And there she had her answer, because it sounded wrong, gross even. She wasn’t into men. Never could be.
She was pressing down on her eyes so hard, the pressure was starting to hurt.
“Rob,” Steve said softly, and she wanted to cry. “Look at it. That’s all I ask.”
She took a shuddering breath, and she told him, instead. She told him about Tammy Thompson, and he was so shocked he forgot about the mark. Robin lowered her hand and saw it, and she hated it, hated the universe. Hated herself, even if it was not her fault.
“But she sounds like a muppet,” Steve winced jokingly, and Robin let out a wet chuckle. She loves him, but not the way he needs. He forgot all about the mark, but she can’t, and she probably never will. Not with the guilt of stealing Steve’s picket fence dream away from him.
*
She goes to the library and finds articles about unconventional soulmate bonds she had no idea existed. How the revelation of soulmate siblings decades back turned the whole soulmate belief upside down. How a follow-up study provided huge statistics for soulmate twins. For multiple soulmates, or multiple marks. That settled Robin’s nerves a little. She felt less wrong for existing and for loving Steve.
What kept truly bothering her was lying to him, but she was too scared of the truth, and what it could do to him. Never before had she felt this bad for not reciprocating someone’s feelings, for not being straight.
She looked at the mark in the mirror and wanted nothing more but to get rid of it. Give Steve back what he deserves. A girl who’d love him, give him a bunch of kids and warm his bed. She felt like the worst kind of friend.
“Did you know you can have more than one soulmate?” she said casually a couple of weeks later.
Steve looked at her quizzically. They’ve been avoiding the soulmate topic ever since she came out, Steve rightfully assuming it was a touchy subject, albeit for the wrong reasons.
“Really?” How does that work?” He furrowed his eyebrows.
“You know, some people are in polygamous relationships,” she explained, hands shaking as she cleaned the counter. “Or their first soulmate dies, and they find another one,” she wished that to none of them. “Or, or- You have a different relationship with them.”
“Since when are you a soulmate expert?”
She avoided his gaze as if he could just scan through her clothes and see it.
“Since I saw half a documentary on it this weekend,” she lied easily. The truth of spending evenings at the library would give too much away. “Did you know a lot of twins are soulmates?”
“Huh. That’s actually super cool.” He grinned at her. “So, like, you can have both platonic and romantic soulmates at the same time?”
“Yes!” she beamed back at him, overenthusiastic at how easily Steve was digesting the information. He seemed genuinely interested, too. It made her feel like she could tell him. Betraying her best friend like that made her lose sleep at night.
Steve hummed, leaning on his palm.
“Rob, you gotta shut up or else I’m gonna get greedy for more than one soulmate,” he joked.
Robin wished him all the soulmates of all kinds that he could handle.
“Do you know how many people there are in the world? Statistically speaking, there must be more than one for you, or else you’d never find each other in the same country,” she added, letting her tongue repeat what’s been on her constantly.
So what if that made her feel a little bit better, too?
*
Robin was bruised, bleeding and dizzy. She was half a step from passing out, and it felt like the worst moment to come out to Steve, to tell him everything. He was telling her how much he loved her, not afraid of the word any more now that they barely escaped death at the hands of Russian soldiers.
The mall bathroom seemed like the worst place to tell him, the tiles cold under their asses and the smell of pee poorly covered with citrusy detergent.
“You’re so smart and funny and yes, at some point I hoped we’d be soulmates but this is good, great even, and I wouldn’t exchange our friendship for anything else.”
“Steve-” she choked out, unshed tears straining against her eyelids.
A beat of silence passed and Steve audibly gulped, the sound loud in the empty stall.
“We are friends, right?”
He sounded so frail, so vulnerable and unlike Steve, Robin shot up to look at him in alarm. The motion made her dizzy again, and she leaned on the nearest wall. Have they never established it? Had she, a band and language nerd, never told former jock and king of high school, that they were friends? That was on her.
“Of course we are,” she scoffed. “We’re soulmates.”
Steve stared at her, wide-eyed. Has she said something wrong? That’s what he wanted to hear, right? That they were-
Oh.
“We are?” his voice was barely a breath, and his face was too fucked up to say exactly what he felt. Was he angry? Disappointed? Or was he happy to be a platonic soulmate with someone like Robin? She did what she was best at and kept talking.
“Yes, and I am so sorry Steve, I didn’t know how to tell you. I was so afraid you’d hate me because I know you dream of a perfect wife and kids and I kinda ruined it, didn’t I? Being bonded to a lesbian, that’s just… cruel, and I wish the universe had someone better for you, a pretty straight girl, and I want you to be happy, Steve because you are my friend and-”
She didn’t realize she was crying until Steve’s strong arms around her pushed out a choked-out sob from her chest.
“Robin,” he stopped her, and he didn’t sound angry, so she took another anxious breath. “Are you fucking kidding me? I’m so happy to be bonded to you.” And oh shit, he was crying too. “Because now, you can’t escape me, you can’t leave me like, like…” he wheezed, and it wasn’t happy crying anymore. She squeezed him tighter. “Like Nancy or like my parents,” he choked out, burying his face in her shoulder. “I’ll be the most annoying soul twin you could have, you’re fucking stuck with me.”
She laughed faintly, wet and strained.
“No, you’re stuck with me, Harrington!”
They burst out laughing before clinging harder to each other and crying some more.
And that was how Dustin and Erica found them. Crying like two drugged babies overwhelmed with happiness, relief and adrenaline.
*
Steve has always been curious about soulmate marks. Even when it turned out he wasn’t going to get his own, not a romantic one at least, it was still something he often wondered about. If anything, the discovery of platonic soulmates made him and Robin dive deep into the world of unconventional soulmate bonds and the surrounding science.
So he was curious, sue him.
It’s been months since Eddie almost died, and Steve kept waiting for the right moment to ask. There was never going to be one though, and he knew that, so at some point, it wasn’t about the right moment and more about being high or drunk enough to ask.
Steve hoped the time was now.
“You know, after the first Upside Down shindig, I signed the permission to list my mark in an obituary. You never know which of the demo freaks is gonna get you.”
Eddie hummed at his words, sucking on his joint. He was splayed on the floor between discarded articles of clothing and some magazines.
“What about you?” Steve prompted, frowning at the ceiling. He wanted to look at his friend, but he didn’t want to seem too eager to get an answer.
“Did I consent to get my soul mark printed in the local newspaper when I keel over? Hell no,” Eddie scoffed. This made Steve flip on his stomach and peer down at him from the bed.
“Why not?”
“People point fingers at me already, they don’t have to point at some poor bastard that they were bonded with a town freak. Besides, I don’t know,” he shrugged, “finding out that your soulmate is dead is kinda shitty. I think it’s better if they don’t know and keep looking.”
“Huh,” Steve slumped a bit, gazing at his friend. He made a good point. “So you wouldn’t want to know if your soulmate was gone?”
Eddie leaned his head to the side, considering his answer.
“Dunno. I’ve read a bit about it, and it doesn’t seem that important to me, you know? Like, if I find my soulmate, then lucky me! It cuts down the courting time,” they both snorted. “But I don’t like, count on it. I’m not gonna wait for ‘the one’,” he made quotation marks in the air.
Steve hummed in thought.
“Yeah, I think I know what you’re saying.”
Suddenly, Eddie was sitting up and getting all up in his face.
“You’re into the soulmate stuff, though, aren’t you?”
“Well…” Steve looked away, feeling his face heat up. “Yeah, it sounds nice to have someone out there suited just for you.” Even if that ball’s out of the park already.
“Wanna see mine?”
“Huh?” Steve looked back at him and Eddie was smirking, wide and teasing.
“You didn’t just ask for no reason, right? You want to see my mark.”
Steve’s cheeks were now positively red.
“I mean if you… If you don’t mind,” he murmured. It wasn’t his initial reason behind asking, but he was naturally curious about marks and liked to see their variety on other people, on his friends and family.
Eddie only patted his cheek, Steve reeling back in surprise, and turned around. He gathered his hair to flip it over his shoulder and expose his nape.
“See these?” he tapped the left side of his neck. “If you connect these bad boys, they make a perfect pentagram.”
Steve frowned at the exposed skin. All he could see there were a few moles, each perfectly round and evenly distributed.
“No way.”
“Yes way,” Eddie said, leaning away. He rummaged through the mess on his desk. “I thought I didn’t have one for a while, but my uncle pointed it out to me one day. Some marks are really fucking subtle. None of your fancy anchor shit,” he grinned back at him, and Steve rolled his eyes. Eddie scooted back to the bed and handed him a pen. “Some scientists claim the more elaborate the mark, the stronger the bond.”
“And you believe that?”
“I believe the bond is only as strong as the work put into it. People should stop making the universe do everything for them. C’mon, connect them,” Eddie nudged his arm and turned around, revealing his nape once again.
Steve was too stunned for a second, surprised by the wise words he just heard from someone who didn’t put as much weight into soulmates as him. Maybe he had been putting too much pressure on some grand mystical plan he had no control over. Was that why his relationships didn’t work out? Was he not putting the effort in just because his date wasn’t the “chosen one”?
Steve looked at the tiny birthmark spots and the pen in his hand. He huffed.
“Ugh, wait.” He sat up, legs sliding on each side of Eddie’s form. His left hand landed on the side of his neck, and with his right hand, he connected the moles into a simple star.
“Huh,” he smiled, surprised when the shape was done. “It’s very fitting.”
“Right?” Eddie laughed. “My soulmate is probably also a metalhead or a fantasy nerd. Or maybe a Wiccan.”
“Wiccan?” Steve asked, handing him the pen back.
“A modern-day witch. Since the pentagram is a magic symbol of protection.”
“What if they’re not? What if they’re boring?” Steve frowned. He was a prime example of not getting what he expected.
“Nah, man,” Eddie threw the pen back on the desk and joined him on the bed, leaning on the pillows lazily. “No way my soulmate is boring.”
It was later that day, Steve had just gotten out of the shower and stood stark naked in front of his mirror, wondering if any of his moles could be a soul mark. Well. Five of them, precisely.
A particular cluster on his inner thigh was hidden from anyone other than a lover. He knew of it, but he never thought of it, never studied it. A hunch made him grab a pen from his drawer. He connected the dots.
A wobbly five-point star mocked him from his mirror.

listen no ok listen if the duffer brothers stole the concept of stranger things then we should legally be allowed to steal their characters and make the queer 80s monster of the week show of our dreams that actually makes sense, embraces found family, deals with trauma, and uses the genre to actually say something interesting and heartfelt

Steve nearly convinced himself it couldn’t be that bad when noise erupted from his left, head snapping up to watch a van tearing up the road. Tires squealing, music blaring loud enough to make Steve flinch, the van came to a lurching halt halfway across the empty lot. He knew that van. Everyone in Hawkins High knew that van. And the entire police force, for that matter, considering what its owner got up to in his free time, not that Steve gave much of a shit about that kind of thing.
And there- Steve's gut churned as the mane of curly brown hair emerged from the drivers side, Eddie Munson's own aura of noise filling the space his excessive music had left behind. Steve didn’t understand how one person could make so much of it by just existing , his ringed fingers always tapping against the chain at the hip of his impossibly tight jeans and the loud slapping of his raggedy white (though, white was a bit of a stretch) sneakers down the halls, the pins on his denim vest clinking together as he inevitably made a scene or the never-ending humming when he didn’t. Steve couldn’t stand it.

There’s nothing I need more than the Tattoo shop next to flower shop trope but with Ronance and a twist.
Tattoo shop Nancy and her annoying little brother moving in next to Flower shop Robin who co owns it with Nancy’s ex, Steve.
So Robin thinks Nancy is some biatch, but really Steve’s just biased and Nancy and Steve are just bad at communicating, so it’s sort of rivals to friends to lovers which is one of my fav tropes tbh.

main masterlist. let’s talk. stranger things masterlist
Tumblr media
The bell over the Family Videos door chimed signaling a customer had just walked in. Steve and Robins conversation quiets down as their heads turn to see who had just walked into their workplace.
A smile makes its way onto Steve's face when he spots the top of your head making your way to your favorite section of the congested DVD store.
“Don’t say a single word,” Robin muttered as she turned toward their work computer and began to type in your name so when you came with the same movies you checked out every other week. You wouldn’t have to wait
“I wasn’t gonna say anything,” Steve grumbles, taking a seat on one of the stools near the register, plopping one elbow down on the counter and resting his chin on his hand.
A few minutes of silence went by after Robin came to sit next to him taking out the big binder they used to keep track of inventory; Steve’s eyes wandered upwards catching sight of you peeking over the stands and making very intense eye contact with his co-worker.
When you notice you've been caught staring you immediately duck as if that’d save you from some kind of embarrassment. The red head next to him is blushing scarlet as she tries to busy herself with work.
“Dude why don’t you just go talk to her?”
Before responding Rob looks up making sure you’re nowhere near them. “Because Y/n Y/l/n is captain of the fucking cheerleading team and I’m in our schools band Steven.”
“Hey now. First name was not necessary whatsoever.”
After picking up ‘Sixteen Candles’, and ‘The Breakfast Club’ you made you way over to the register but this time the two workers notice you had an extra movie.
Robin scans the first two and takes the third looking over it.
Dirty Dancing.
“Oh Y/n, dirty dancing? What trouble are you getting into this weekend?” Steve questioned with an eyebrow raised a toothpick in his mouth.
“Well hopefully I have a date..”
The short-haired girl scans the movie stacking it with the others a slight look of disappointment on her face as she slides your checked out movies towards you.
You watch as she makes no move to make eye contact with you and just types in the extra movie you had checked out.
“With who?”
Your eyes move from Robin to Steve then back to Robin. You tilt your head down just a bit trying to catch her eyes as she looks down intently at the beige mechanical keyboard connected to the computer.
Inquisitively Robin's eyes connect with yours as you give her a small smile before speaking up. “Well hopefully with you.” Your voice is low and shaky indicating you were very nervous.
“You want to go out with me?”
“Robin I don’t come in here to check out the exact same movies every week, I’ve just been working up the courage to ask you out.”
“Really?”
“Of course,”
“Okay, but why me? You’re captain of the cheerleading team, you should be dating the captain of the football or basketball team.” She states, confused but happy nonetheless.
“So since I'm captain of the cheer team I have to be straight?”
“No no no that’s not at all—“
When a wide grin forms on your face and Steve begins to chuckle Robin sighs in relief and embarrassment as she runs her hands down her face.
“I’m just messing with you, but hey look I’ve gotta run. This Saturday, my house dinner, and a movie?”
“I'd love to.” You took your movies off the counter bidding your goodbyes to the workers and the second the door closed Steve slowly turned towards his best friend ready to make a slick remark before she stopped him.
“Don’t even Harrington.”

That’s What She Said | Pt 1 ✽
| Eddie Munson x Female Reader
Tumblr media
(AN: I am obsessed with every. single. shot. in this scene. His cheeky smile? my GOD.)
2:32. Only ten more minutes of torture. Thank god. Time could not have possibly moved slower today. Even the ticking of the clock had a slower pace than usual.
“Y/n,” a wave of anxiety shot through your core, being called on unexpectedly was not something you needed right now, “You didn’t hand in yesterday's assignment,” Ms. Hart said, waving the hand-in bin in the air.
“Oh, sorry Ms. I’ll do that now,” you said, frantically reaching down for your backpack.
“If you could come up and stick it in there that’d be appreciated.”
An almost-silent snort came from above. You glanced up from your bag, seeing the kid beside you, Eddie Munson, obnoxiously covering his mouth. You sat back up, assignment in hand, and shot him a confused look.
Eddie caught you in his peripheral, glancing over at you a moment before leaning close, “that’s what she said,” he whispered only loud enough for you to hear. You were still visibly baffled, taking a moment to process where he got that from- oh. You snickered at his comment, it was kinda funny actually.
This little moment in time left you wondering how many times you had actually spoken to Eddie. You’d known of him since middle school but could probably count on one hand how many times you had formally interacted with him. Usually, he sat at the back of the class, scribbling on his desk or using the lectures as a perfect opportunity to catch up on some zzzs. But he was late today, and for whatever reason, the universe decided to seat you two beside each other.
2:34. “Oh. My. God”, you thought to yourself. Maybe six minutes of actually paying attention would make time go by faster.
Ms. Hart continued talking in her monotone voice, “Alright, we don’t have time today, but tomorrow we’ll start unit 5. A lot of students struggle with this one, it’s pretty long and hard.”
Almost involuntarily, you gave the boy beside you a sharp side glance, he had done the exact same thing. You couldn’t unhear it now. The two of you snorted again and you turned to him, “the jokes just write themselves,” you said in a hushed tone.
“What’s so funny back there?” Ms. Hart asked, her tone clearly directed and you and him.
Eddie flashed you a cheeky grin, suddenly you couldn’t wait to hear what he was going to say.
“I’m sorry Miss, that just sounds too hard, I don’t know if I can take it,” he said overly eager.
The teacher huffed, clearly too tired to handle any of his shenanigans, “Well I would be worried if I were you, judging by your past performance. I can’t stay on top of you 24/7, Munson.”
You tilted your head down, desperately trying not to burst in front of everyone. You could tell Eddie was struggling too, “Come again?” his laugh breaking through ever so slightly.
The glorious sound of the school bell rang, and you could not be more grateful, “Remember, Unit 5. Bring you textbooks tomorrow because I am not lending out the teacher's copy again,” Ms. Hart yelled out over the sea of loud chairs and chatter.
You started packing your bag, facing the boy beside you, “I’m shocked you ever got out of middle school,” you said tapping your finger on your head, noting his immature humour.
He huffed, “Yeah well, I’m lucky I even graduated that, let alone this shit-hole.” You two started to walk out of the class, him jumping off of the desk he was perched on in his typical Munson manner.
“C’mon your marks can’t be that bad.”
“Trust me, they are that bad.”
It was silent between you for a moment before reaching the door frame, meeting an empty classroom behind you, “Look I don’t...normally offer this, but if you really need the answers, I grant thee permission to lean over every once in a blue moon,” you pointed with a smile.
“Miss Y/N, the opportunity you have bestowed upon me shall not be taken lightly,” he replied, giving you a little bow in the process.
You responded with a laugh, making his own face light up with an added twinkle in his eye, “Alright, alright. I’ll see you around.”
You two turned in opposite directions. You couldn’t help but glance back at him theatrically weaving in and out of the crowd. It was strange, you had always seen him around, he had always been there, but this was the first time you really noticed him.
“Y/N L/N!” A booming voice came at you from the side, catching the attention of a few people around you, “what on gods green earth do you think you’re doing?” Your best friend, Robin, slipped in beside you, accidentally shoving you into another kid.
“Hm?”
“EDDIE. “THE FREAK”. MUNSON,” she shouted, again a bit too loud.
You shot her a confused look, “and...what about him?”
Robin’s eyes widened, “What about him? What ABOUT HIM? Y/n, you could have quite literally, anyone at the school you want, but I see you flirting with Eddie Munson?”
You could almost feel your defences build up, “Flirting? Okay that’s a huge overstatement. We were joking around in class and I offered to give him the homework answers every now and then!”
Robin let out a huge sigh before stopping in front of your locker, “That’s how these boys get to you Y/n! It starts with little jokes, then homework, then you’re playing footsies in class, and before you know it he’s got you pregnant! And it's Eddie, so he’s probably gonna get his Hellfire club to perform some ritual that impregnates you with the anti-christ or something!”
You cut her off before she could continue with one of her absurd conspiracies, “Okay, Robin, I just offered him homework answers. He’s not...ew no, none of that, we’re barely acquaintances. Besides, you don’t actually believe all that christian, ‘satanic panic’ shit do you?”
Robin stopped and blinked a moment, “Well...no. But I’m just saying,” you slammed your locker and continued walking with her, “you never know. You just got out of a shit relationship, I’m not letting you dive into any possibility of a new one-”
“Hey Steve,” you jokingly rolled your eyes to him as you passed the perfectly quaffed haired boy’s locker.
“Oh god, what’s she on about now,” he asked as if Robin weren’t right there.
“Y/n’s flirting with Eddie Munson!” Robin shouted...again.
“ROBIN!”
“You what?!” Steve’s eyes practically popped out of his skull.
You groaned at both of them and stepped forward, marching towards the doors, “Good god, I’ll see you guys at work.” You pushed through to the outside, just focusing on getting to your car and-
A huge black blur woodshed past you, barely a foot from your nose. You gasped, a few people behind you echoed your noise. The driver kept going, but rolled down his window and leaned back, “Sorry Princess!” He shouted.
“Fucking Eddie Munson,” you huffed
(AN: I’m gonna cry, I had a pt 2 almost completed that I was gonna post tomorrow BUT FCKIGN TOMBLR REFRESHED THE PAGE AND ITS GOOONNEEEE. So anyways, I wasted 45 minutes of sleep time and now its gonna take me longer to update.)

Just The Two Of Us
Y'all remember the ask by @mrsjaderogers ?
Summary: Reader and Nancy are friends, reader likes Steve. But then even tho Nancy knew she got with him, constantly reminding reader how much of a failure they are. That makes their friendship end. Will probably suck balls.
Warnings: Season 1 Steve , Nancy being a bad best friend, promise breaking. Swearing. I hate using Y/N sonI kinda went for a nickname Sweets and this will have more parts~
________________________________________________
Just the two of us
It had been years. Years of having to cope with the feeling of liking a total asshole. That asshole being none other than Steve Harrington. The king of Hawkins High. Most of the time you wanted to literally slap yourself for falling in love with that complete idiot of a boy.
Then again, you couldn't particularly choose who you fell in love with. What made it even worse was that Nancy, who was your childhood best friend, since diapers, also had a crush on him. While you just occasionally mentioned how cute he looked or how hot he was. She was constantly talking about him. It made you sick to the stomach. Even tho you still liked him. He didn't do anything wrong, besides being with his asshole friends, his morals, his lifestyle.. but that's another story.
"Hey look, he's wearing the shorts again" you had heared some girls talk, pointing out steves outfit for a simple class of PE. You couldn't believe how much of a fuse they we're making, yes that guy was certainly hot but make an entire scene out of it. So that he'd notice you? No thank you. There were already enough people bullying you as it was. You didn't need the pity of him just noticing you for being the total outcast. You however noticed that Nancy was definitely lookiz at him. She was definitely pretty, definitely a girl next door and also good at school. You yourself could not say that about yourself.
You were confident but not un a way that would help you gat the attention of your crush that you definitely had on stupid Steve fucking Harrington. If there was one thing you we're definitely nailing, it was hating yourself for falling for a guy like him. He was popular and you we're the outcast bullied by cheerleaders because you liked nerdy stuff like star wars or Dungeons and Dragons.
"Hey" you heared Nancy call out waving a hand infront of your eyes. "You there ?" she asked, resulting in you nodding. "Yeah I was just thinking about the Math test" you quickly lied. If she had looked at you, she'd definitely noticed you we're totally lying. "We can study at my place later if you want?" She suggested. But she was busy looking at Steve. You weren't suprised at all to be fair. That didn't mean idlt didn't hurt anyway. "Yeah, that'd be great, thanks" also a good time to tell her about your crush on Steve. She was your best friend after all.
PE went by fast and so did the rest of the school day. Much to your surprise Mrs. Wheeler had picked you two and Mike up so you we're there faster that you had anticipated. After dinner you two went up to her room and sat down to do homework and learn for maths.
"no that's not correct.. if you wanna solve that just first multiply and then add them up before you continue, not after" Nancy explained. "Oh that's what I've been getting wrong.. thanks. I'll try again" so you do. A silence falling over the two of you. Not fully awkward but leaning into that kind of atmosphere.
"Uhm hey Nance.. I wanna tell you something.." after another ten minutes of failing to solve the math problem you speak up. Finally wanting to talk about that topic. "Yeah sure go ahead." she lays down her pen to hive you her full attention. It makes you a little nervous, you bite your lip and play with your pen before you continue. "So you know how I said I had a crush on that guy.." you ask, makiz her smile widely nodding. "Yesss I remember that, that day was marked in my calendar because I couldn't believe that you have a crush.. you didn't tell me who it was ... Right?" she said. There was the Nancy that you knew, all chatty, sweet and caring.
"Right.." anxiously you started picking at the skin around your nails, making her reach out to take one of your hands, in a very weak and bad attempt to calm you down. It made you even more anxious but you couldn't tell why. "Well.. it's.. oh you're gonna laugh.." you hesitated. "It's Steve Harrington.."
You said while looking at her. Expecting anything but not that she smiled. But rather like she was pitying you. "I know" she said, making you cringe slightly. How would she know something you weren't certain of yet. Then again maybe you weren't being as careful as you thought.
"how.." was the only thing you managed to say. She laughed, again a response you didn't expect. "Well you look at him a lot and blush when he speaks to you." You blush. Damn it.
"well I think its cute" she said looking down at you from her bed. You were sitting on the floor leaning against her bed, sighting.
"mhm cute." you reply sarcastically. "I'm dating him." she then suddenly said. That made you drop your pen. She what. "Oh.." was all you managed to say before the devil himself appeared. There was a knocking on the window startling you.
"open up Nance" he said trying to slide up the window, resulting in you standing up. "If you knew, why would you do this to me then?" you ask packing your stuff. You we're beyond mad.
Not like mad because someone said something silly, mad because she knew, without you telling her that you liked him, and still went for him. That's NOT something your best friend should do.
"Hey wait.." Nancy said while Steve climbed in. "Oh hey.. What are you doing here?" Steve asked you and you looked at him, as Nancy had said, you started blushing. "No need to worry, I was about to leave. Goodbye Nancy. See you Steve." With that you took your stuff and left.
Steve yelled something but you didn't care. You basically ran out of the wheelers house. "Goodbye Mrs.Wheeler, thanks for the dinner" you said while walking out, leaving her confused. You just keep walking.
To round that cliche that was happening here right now, it did start raining. "At least no one will see I cried" you laughed to yourself. You we're just done. Your so called best friend betrayed you, your crush probably knows, on top he is an asshole because of his asshole friends.
You walked home, you did not have a car nor did you wanna ride your bike that day. Also the walk home wasn't really helping the chaos you had going on in your mind. Being alone meant you had time to think. Which led to you crying. You hated everything. Well actually you were mad at Nancy. And you hated every inch of that fuckin asshole called Steve Harrington.
That evening you arrived at home, soaked and just crying. Not wanting to go to school the next day.
______________
The next day you drove your bike to school, not wanting to see anyone. To your surprise you were mostly alone. Until you came up to school, because you happened to run into, steve. "Oh fuck sorry.. didn't mean to run you over" you said.
Much to your hate you blush, cursing yourself, also hoping he doesn't notice. "No need to be sorry, sweets" he says smiling like the asshole he is. Still you smile back. You hate yourself and would rather willingly hit your head on the wall. You don't.
Of course the King Harrington notices everything and just grins cockily. "Oh no jeed to be shy around me.. I promise I don't bite.. if you don't want me to." he says playfully. Making you want to slap him across the face, but you somehow manage to contain yourself. He traps you between the wall and him.
Now all the containing washed away and you slap him across rhe face, leaving him more than confused. "What was that for?" he asked, stepping away allowing you to move.
"That's what you get for being... So mean" was all you had managed to say before running off to your next class, which was drama. He was left there standing looking like a total Idiot. "Pff, the king just got demoted" Tommy said grinning as he looked at you running away.
"Shut up Tommy. No one asked you" someone said if there was more stupid shit saidyou wouldn't know because you left. Your life couldn't be more awful right now. You lost your best friend. To the boy you obviously had a massive crush on. So yeah it was awful.
As the weeks went by you befriended the marching band nerd Robin Buckley. And she was definitely a much better friend than Nancy ever was.. Robin took time to listen to you, sneaked you out of class when you just didn't wanna and more. You were thankful for that.

Platonic with a capital "P" - part 2
part 1 | read on Ao3
“Robin? How comfortable are you with nudity?”
“Very uncomfortable,” she responded just like he expected, without missing a beat.
“Okay, okay.” Steve walked around the room, the phone pressed to his ear. He inhaled and exhaled loudly. “I think I have a second mark, so maybe you have one too,” he blurted out quickly.
The line became silent for a suffocating couple of seconds.
“...what?”
“If I have a second mark, then there’s a real possibility you do too.”
“Okay, hold on.”
Steve couldn’t hold on, he was almost walking on the walls. He was soul bonded to Eddie fucking Munson. He wanted to scream.
“What does that have to do with nudity?”
“I wanna help you look.”
“Excuse me?!” Robin shrieked, forcing him to pull the phone away from his ear.
“Stop fucking screaming, you’re basically my sister. What if it’s like, on your back?”
“Steve-”
“Robin.”
There was a tense silence over the line, and Steve was walking a hole into his rug.
“Fine,” his friend sighed eventually. “You can look at my back, you weirdo.”
“Okay, I’ll pick you up in ten.”
“What-?!”
He hung up before he could hear the rest of her protests. He needed her, his platonic soulmate, right now.
Robin seemed annoyed with him when she slipped into the passenger seat. But he was used to that, it was almost her default state at this point.
“So how did you find out?”
Steve left her driveway and made a turn. Then another. He bit down on his lip and the silence kept stretching.
“Steve-”
“Eddie showed me his.”
Robin frowned at first, but as she eyed the tense line of his lips, the implication of his words sunk in. She started vibrating out of her seat.
“No.”
“Yes. They match. I’m like 99% sure.”
“No!” If he wasn’t driving, she probably would be shaking him like a rag doll right now.
“Yes! I know!”
“Holy fuck.”
“Holy fuck,” he agreed.
Moments later, they entered his house and Robin’s fingernails were digging into his hand, shaking it with the excitement she couldn’t contain.
“It’s like, five moles, here on his nape,” he motioned at the spot. “And I have a lot of moles, right? So I never think about them much. But there are a few of them on my thigh, they’re weirdly symmetrical. And I connected them. And they made a pentagram. And Eddie’s made a pentagram too.”
“I wanna see.”
“I thought you didn’t want me to undress?” he quirked his eyebrow.
“I still don’t, but I’m too fucking curious at his point,” she rolled her eyes as if he was the one being ridiculous right now. Honestly, their whole situation was. Steve thought it suited them, in a way.
They grabbed a couple of beers and ran up the stairs to his room. She motioned him to go on, and he slid down his pants without much thought, showing off his thigh.
“Ok, wow, this is- I would never think that’s a soul mark.” Her eyes widened as she leaned in.
“Right?!”
“You have so many of them already.”
“I know!” He pulled up his jeans and popped open his beer. Robin sat down on his bed, but he couldn’t settle. His adrenaline was still buzzing from the revelation.
“How do you feel about that?” Robin frowned at him, scrunching her nose.
“Honestly, I feel…” he stopped to find the words, looking out the window, at the setting sun. “Light-headed a bit. I have another soulmate.”
“And it’s Eddie.”
Steve glanced at her, blinking like it had just now dawned on him.
“It’s Eddie.”
“How do you feel about that?”
Steve deflated. He looked at his soulmate’s big, sympathetic eyes and sat down next to her.
“I think I’m okay with that,” a smile tugged at his lips as he said it. “Very okay with that.”
Which brought another unfortunate thought into his brain. He groaned, slumping against his best friend.
“How do I tell him I’m his soulmate now?”
B Side: Romantic
Because, about a month ago, Eddie had confessed.
“Hey, so,” he started one night after they had dropped kids from Hellfire. “We almost died, several times.”
“We did, yeah,” Steve mused, leading his Beamer down the road to the trailer park. They were alone in the car by then. He picked up Eddie along with Max, but she decided to have a sleepover with El.
“Shit kinda reminds you to live life to the fullest. Be yourself and all that jazz.”
“You wanna go bungee jumping or something?” Steve quirked his eyebrow, pulling into the space in front of Eddie’s trailer.
Eddie snorted.
“Nah, dude, I have enough near-death experiences for a lifetime.” He shook his head. “No, it’s kinda more complicated.”
“Okay? Well, we’re gonna support you, whatever insane ideas are going in that metalhead of yours,” he reassured lightly but surely. Not like Dustin didn’t have a new ridiculous plan of his own every week. Their little apocalypse group was just a bit unhinged like that.
Eddie smiled at his words, but then slumped in the car seat, drumming on his thighs nervously.
“I like you,” he said softly, looking away.
Steve turned towards him, confused.
“Okay... I like you too.”
But Eddie was shaking his head, his hair following the motion and shielding his face.
“No, dude,” he sighed. “I’m bisexual. I mean it in a… crush kinda way.”
“Oh.”
Steve’s eyes widened in surprise, but Eddie had turned to an anxious mop of dark hair by that point. His grip on the steering wheel tightened, and he didn’t know what to say. Is this how Robin felt when he confessed?
“Yeah, so like, I don’t expect anything? Honestly, not getting beaten up is enough for me,” Eddie laughed dryly and Steve winced. “I just want you to know because I don’t wanna hide and lie anymore. I’ll get over it eventually, and I hope we can still be friends.”
There was a hopeful question there, though Eddie still wasn’t looking at him.
“Dude, it’s fine,” he assured, even though it didn’t feel completely fine. “I’m still friends with Nancy,” he reminded, hoping Eddie won’t remind him about the complexities of that relationship. “We’re gonna be okay,” he finished like it was an obvious fact, one of the unbreakable rules of nature. He hoped it was.
“Okay, yeah.” Eddie managed a thin smile and finally, finally, looked at him. “Thanks, dude,” he said, pulling on the door handle. With his confession out, he was vibrating out of his seat, eager to leave.
“Hey, Eddie!” Steve stopped him before he could slam the door and leave Steve alone with his thoughts.
“Yeah?” Eddie leaned back in, visibly nervous. He was biting his lip and his eyes kept darting towards his trailer. Like he was measuring the distance between, and the time it would take to cross it.
“I’m flattered, by the way,” Steve grinned.
Eddie rolled his eyes, but his body sagged with relief.
“Maybe you are the one who should get his ego in check,” he raised his eyebrow, joking back. Everything was okay.
“Who do you think Dustin got it from?” Steve’s grin turned into a cocky smirk.
Eddie shook his head and slammed the door shut and stepped away, the familiar buzzing energy back in his step. Steve chuckled to himself as his friend waved goodbye, disappearing quickly in his trailer.
*
“Listen, I know that you care about me, but your romanticism sometimes freaks me the fuck out. Like, the lengths you can go to,” Robin whined while tying her hair up as per her friend’s request.
They had just finished a way-too-long debate about the possibility of soul marks hiding on someone’s scalp. It ended with Robin stating loudly she was not shaving for no soulmate.
“Suck it up, Buckley. Like you’re not curious yourself.”
She was. It was the only reason she was humouring him. Maybe there was another mark she should have been hiding all along.
They agreed to do it gradually. Only taking off as many layers as was necessary. So at first Steve closely scrutinized her nape and her arms, inch by inch, while she drank her beer to dampen the embarrassment of the bizarre situation.
“Nothing suspicious,” he decided after checking behind her ears. “So, um…”
Robin let out a long sigh, putting into it all the annoyance and anxiety she felt.
“I’m gonna take off my socks and roll up my pants,” she offered.
Steve nodded eagerly, making her roll her eyes, her lip twitching. He reminded her of a little puppy whenever he acted like that.
She finished off the beer, crumpling the can and throwing it into the trashcan before pulling her foot up, taking off the sock and exposing her calf as far as the jeans would allow. Then she threw her leg into her friend's lap while she worked on the other.
“If you tickle me, I am breaking your nose,” she warned, pressing her heel into the meat of his thigh in a silent threat.
“Noted,” he nodded, already inspecting her ankle with a delicate touch. She threw the other leg over his thigh and slumped back, resting on her arms and watching.
It felt weird to be touched like that, where nobody ever touched her before. What a travesty it was her best friend and platonic soulmate and not a cute girl. At least it wasn’t just some guy, and she wasn’t being forced into an unpleasant situation.
A sudden loud intake of breath startled her from her thoughts. Steve’s thumb pressed softly into the sole of her left foot, and she instinctively jerked it away, eyes narrowing.
“What did I say about tickling,” she hissed, but his hands were grabbing her foot back and pulling it closer to him, eyes wide like saucers.
“Robin.” Her name was like a reprimand, a call and a prayer all stirred into one sound. She frowned, now concerned and curious. They were looking for a soul mark, after all. “What is this?” His thumb brushed against the spot again, and she wrenched it from his hands to look for herself.
She frowned at the pale mark on her foot.
“It’s just a scar. I stepped on a clam when I was little.”
Steve sat up on his knees, excitement sparkling in his eyes.
“It looks like a moon.”
Steve was pulling at straws, and it was starting to annoy her.
“It’s a coincidence. It’s just a scar,” she tried to wave him off.
“Do you remember getting it?” he pressed on, not letting her dismiss the idea.
“Of course,” she scoffed, but under his hard gaze, she huffed and looked away. “I think,” she admitted with a frown.
“You think?”
“It’s what my mom has been telling me. I was too young to remember.”
“What did she tell you?”
Robin scrunched her eyebrows, searching for a long-forgotten tale from her childhood.
“She said it was the during the summer we spent at my aunt’s place,” she recollected. “That I got it from walking barefoot in the river all the time.”
“So she doesn’t have a concrete incident in mind?”
“Guess not.”
They stared at each other for a long time. To Robin’s horror, a wide smile crept on Steve’s face. She scowled.
“Stop that. At least I won’t have to-”
“I’ve seen it before.”
Robin closed her eyes. There was an unpleasant pressure building in her temples as she fought against the hope Steve was trying to instill in her.
“What are you saying?”
“I’m saying that I’ve seen girls naked, I’ve seen a lot of soul marks.”
“To the point, Casanova,” Robin growled, opening her eyes only to glare at him, but his smile was unwavering.
“One of them had a little moon near her armpit.”
“Since when do you like suspense so much? Am I getting a name or what?” The rollercoaster of emotions and Steve’s giddiness were getting to her, and she could feel her anger spiking.
“I’m not sure if you’re ready for her.”
“You know what, I’m not sure if you even remember her name, and now you just don’t wanna admit it.”
“Well, maybe I’m not gonna tell you, if you’re gonna treat me like a slut,” he scoffed, albeit playfully.
“Steve-”
“It’s Nancy. Nancy Wheeler has a moon-shaped soul mark.”
*
“I’m gonna puke.”
“Is this how coming out feels like? I hate this.”
Robin and Steve had been spiralling for the whole week, brainstorming how they should come out to their soulmates. It was Friday afternoon, and they just hung up from confirming the hour of their double date at the local diner. The problem was, the other two didn’t know it was a date. To them, it was just a casual hang-out between the older Upside Down survivors.
“Pretty much,” Robin nodded awkwardly with her head on a pillow next to Steve. They were laying on his bed and staring at the ceiling.
“Maybe we should invite them over? This isn’t-”
“We’ve been through this,” Robin cut him off wearily. She wasn’t even annoyed by this point because they had gone through it a million times, and both of them were okay with repeating it however many more times needed to calm their nerves. “We start it in a public location to hang out and chill. Then we move somewhere more private to talk. Nowhere Upside-Down related, and not inside, so we don’t feel cooped up, and we’re on common turf,” she recited what they’d agreed on.
“I know.”
They sighed in unison.
“What are you gonna order?” Robin decided to find something harmless to discuss, to take their minds off worrying.
“A chocolate milkshake,” Steve answered without a thought, because what was the point of going to a diner and not getting a milkshake? Robin agreed with him. “And some fries, maybe nachos. If I get anything more than that, I might puke. Wouldn’t be very seductive of me.”
Robin snorted at that. That was another one of the bullet points in their debates. Since Steve knew about Eddie’s crush on him, he was going to shoot his shot. He’s been subconsciously seducing him for the past month already anyway.
Robin’s objective was to come out and not lose a friend. She didn’t let herself be hopeful, even if Steve and his belief in soul marks were trying to fight her on that.
“You?” he threw the question back at her.
“Man, I don’t know if I can even handle the milkshake. Maybe I’ll just get water.”
“Dude.”
“Sparkling? With lime?”
“We could share the milkshake. And fries too,” Steve offered. It’s been like that for the past few days - finding solutions and stopping each other from spiralling.
“That wouldn’t be very double-datey, you know?”
“So?” Steve shrugged, turning his head towards her. Feeling the shift of his pillow, she turned as well. “We’re soulmates, we can do whatever the fuck we want.”
She nodded slowly, considering his offer.
“Sure, I guess. I don’t want chocolate, though.”
“Strawberry?”
“Strawberry,” she agreed.
They looked back at the ceiling before asking each other what they were gonna wear and reciting to each other their painstakingly picked outfits. The clothes had already been laid out, waiting on the back of Steve’s chair.
The sun was still setting when they went about their evening routines and forced themselves into an uneasy sleep.
*
At the diner, everything was going smoothly for a while. Except Robin was sickly pale like she was going to run into the bathroom and make good on her vomit threat at any second. She hadn’t even eaten breakfast.
“You still want that milkshake?” Steve leaned closer to her, eyeing her with worry. She nodded stiffly.
Nancy was sitting across from her, her eyebrows scrunched in concern as well. She hesitantly reached across the table to get Robin’s attention.
“Do you want some candy? Or chewing gum?” she offered. Robin looked up at her and after a moment of hesitation nodded feverishly.
“Yeah,” she croaked, and it was the only thing she managed out so far other than a greeting.
Nancy reached into her purse and held out a bag of lemon candy and a small pack of mint gum, raising an eyebrow. Robin pointed at the candy, so Nancy popped the bag open and held it out to her to grab one.
“Thanks,” she mumbled around the candy, sucking on it greedily. Steve squeezed her knee under the table.
“No problem.” Nancy smiled reassuringly.
Eddie simply watched them in silence, an uncommon occurrence for him that stirred Steve’s insides with worry.
When their waitress arrived, Nancy and Eddie ordered normal meals, while Steve got the agreed-on fries and milkshake. Robin got enough grip on her vocal cords to ask for a glass of water.
Eddie raised an eyebrow when he heard Steve’s order.
“Not chocolate?” he asked.
It was an innocent question, and it wasn’t hard to notice Steve liked chocolate stuff and always ordered them when given the choice. It still made his skin warm to know Eddie remembered. He shrugged, pretending not to be affected by the attention.
“Robin said she wanted to share.”
“Chocolate’s too sweet,” she stuck out her tongue to make a point at which the tension finally loosened, breaking out an argument about milkshake flavors instead. Eddie sided with Steve, at which she commented boys were just children with a sweet tooth, but everyone agreed to boo Nancy when she said she liked vanilla.
“There’s not even real vanilla in there, it’s just like, sweet cream,” Robin scrunched her nose.
Nancy only shrugged.
“It goes nice with a shot of espresso or two,” she defended, at which everyone perked up in interest.
When their orders arrived, Nancy ordered an espresso because now everyone wanted to try her concoction, and Eddie slid his milkshake towards Steve.
“Have some,” he offered, almost shyly. “Wouldn’t want your sugar levels to drop.”
Steve grinned at him, seeing his opportunity.
“You saying I’m not sweet enough for you?” he raised an eyebrow, his tongue flicking against the straw before he wrapped his lips around it, knowing full well Eddie was about to use it.
The boy’s eyes widened, but he quickly composed himself.
“Just hoping everyone else faints from the amount of sugar.”
And I get you all to myself, went unspoken.
Steve snickered, passing the milkshake back to him. Eddie eyed the straw, his cheeks reddening, before he took it into his mouth. As Steve watched him, he felt Robin kick him under the table. He kicked back.
Nancy sipped some of her plain, boring milkshake to make room for the espresso when it arrived. She poured it in and used the straw to mix it before pushing it towards Robin, who took a cautious sip.
“Holy shit,” she said, eyes widening in surprise. “This is actually good,” she admitted, pushing the glass back. “They could make this a regular.”
Nancy smiled happily at the approval. She pushed it towards Eddie next but held her glass before he could reach for it.
“Use your own straw. I don’t want your nicotine breath on it,” she said, scrunching her nose.
Eddie shrugged, unfazed, and reached for the straw poking from his shake.
“Fair enough,” he agreed. He took a sip and smacked his lips loudly, humming. “Good. But I’d add even more coffee,” he made his verdict.
Before he could pull out his straw, Steve reached for the coffee shake and used it for himself.
He hummed in approval, eyeing Eddie’s reddening cheeks.
“I’d add some chocolate, and it would be perfect,” he decided, pushing it back to Eddie, who finally pulled out his straw to dump it back into his shake.
“What if you just added espresso into the chocolate shake?” wondered Eddie, making Steve gasp.
“Genius!”
They talked about possible flavor combinations for far longer than appropriate, their fries diminishing in size visibly.
“So uh,” Nancy dipped a fry into the puddle of ketchup, not looking up from it. “You guys wanted to talk about something?”
Eddie straightened up next to her, eyeing them.
“Yeah,” Robin winced. “But not here,” she took an involuntary look around, at the other patrons.
Nancy nodded, her forehead wrinkling slightly with worry.
“It’s just a short drive to the park if you guys don’t mind,” Steve spoke up, offering a location they’d discussed with Robin beforehand.
The other two looked at each other shortly before nodding in agreement.
The tense atmosphere from the beginning came back tenfold from then on. The conversation attempts didn’t lead anywhere, as Steve and Nancy seemed to be the only ones trying to force something out. Their friends seemed lost in their thoughts, only grunting half-assed responses.
They finished their food quickly and split the bill evenly in four, with Steve paying for himself and Robin. Eddie stood up from the booth like it burned him and stepped out first to have a smoke before they take off. Robin excused herself to the bathroom, and Steve and Nancy stacked up their plates for an easy pickup.
They were loading into Steve’s Beamer before any of them were ready for what was to come. Nobody fought for shotgun. Robin was green in the face again and gravitated to the back seat, so Eddie sat down in the front instead. And nobody said a word when he chose the radio station and turned up the volume. Whatever niche genre he chose seemed to be better than any attempts at conversation.
The sun was still up, the heat of midday was slowly dying down, and the park was mostly visited by young parents with strollers and dog owners. The picnic tables were mostly empty, and the four settled around one of them, the nervous energy radiating off them keeping any intrusive ears at bay.
“What is it?” Nancy was the first one to break the uncomfortable tension, her eyes darting between Steve and Robin. “Whatever it is, I’m sure it’s not as bad as you guys make it seem.” She frowned, her mind already running through the worst-case scenarios, which were pretty imaginative considering their history with an alternate dimension. So she dampened her predictions to more down-to-earth ones.
“Are you guys dating?”
Steve winced and Robin let out a strangled snort, though it didn’t make her face any less pale.
Eddie frowned at the both of them, the concern on his face visibly growing.
“Are you pregnant?”
“What the fuck, Eddie?!” Steve’s eyes nearly popped out of their sockets while the guy innocently raised his hands.
“Hey, I’m just-”
Robin shot up and ran away, hand over her mouth. All of them rose in alarm, but she simply disappeared behind a nearby bush, retching into the nearest trash can.
Eddie and Nancy exchanged a confused and concerned look, while Steve seemed to be on the verge of tears. He rubbed at his eyes, exhaling loudly. He low-key expected his best friend to abandon him, but that didn’t make it any easier to deal with on his own.
“We’re not dating, and Robin is not pregnant,” he stated simply, levelling both of his friends with a hard look. “But,” he raised a finger. “We are soulmates. But!” he cut in quickly before anyone could interrupt. “Each of us has another one. And it’s you guys.”
The table was silent for a long bit before Nancy waved her hands.
“But we checked our marks. They are different,” she protested.
Steve was shaking his head ready to correct her, when Robin reached the table, now steadier on her legs and ready for action.
“No, you’re my soulmate. Eddie is Steve’s,” she clarified.
The looks she got were straight from a bad soap opera. Steve kept eyeing Eddie, the way his expressive face went from delight to disbelief to hope to wariness. He reached out his hand, and the metalhead watched it hesitantly before reaching back to squeeze his fingers.
“You’ve all seen my mark,” he lifted the sleeve of his shirt with his free hand.
Robin recognized her clue and lifted her shirt to uncover hers, matching her best friend’s.
“And this is mine.”
Their friends, soulmates, watched in stunned silence,
“But I also have a moon-shaped mark on my foot,” she admitted, eyes fixed on the graffiti littering the table.
“And the moles on my thigh make a pentagram.”
The hand holding Steve’s palm tightened, nearly to the point of pain.
“For real?” Eddie asked breathily, his eyes huge like saucers. Steve nodded.
“When you showed me yours, I had a weird feeling I've seen it before. I went home and found a similar cluster on my thigh, tried connecting them and…” he trailed off, shrugging.
Eddie licked his suddenly dry lip, looking at their joined hands.
“Do you- How do you feel about it?”
Steve slumped forward, elbows relaxing against the wooden table top. He’s been through this. With himself, with Robin.
“I’ve been bonded to a lesbian and a bisexual guy. I know where I have better chances.”
Eddie let out an amused breath against himself.
“But, Steve-”
“I know, but… Whoever bonded me to you must know me better than myself. Because this doesn’t feel wrong. I like the idea of being bonded to you. I feel kind of relieved if it makes sense?” he finished hesitantly.
Eddie shook his head, but a smile tugged on his lips.
“It doesn’t, to be completely honest, but if you’re okay with it, who am I to look a gift horse in the mouth?” He smiled before cocking his head playfully. “So what? When I say I like you, it’s not enough, but when the universe tells you I'm okay, you’re on board?”
Steve tightened his grip on Eddie.
“You’re so enough, Eddie, but I didn’t want to strip you of a potential soulmate who has a better grip on his sexuality, likes the same nerd stuff, I don’t know.” He huffed, frustrated. “I felt like I would be imposing. But since we are actually bonded, I felt like maybe I could be enough for you. If you’ll have me,” he added shyly, uncertain. There were people distrustful of soul marks to the point where they’d reject their soulmates.
Eddie raised his eyebrows.
“You’re okay with being bonded to a guy, but you wouldn't be okay with dating me, knowing somewhere out there was someone better for me?”
Steve frowned. Was that a wrong way of thinking?
“Kind of?” he offered, unsure. But Eddie was still holding his hand. “I didn’t want to lead you on while I wasn’t sure if I was into guys, but since someone up there thinks I am, then I guess it’s okay?” He shook his head, correcting himself immediately. “It is okay.”
Eddie burst out laughing. Steve instinctively tightened his grip on his hand, but Eddie wasn’t pulling away.
“You’re a dumbass, Harrington,” he summed up and, to Steve’s delight, leaned in and pulled up their joined hands to lay a kiss on his knuckles. “And I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
As the pleasant silence stretched, they became aware of two heavy pairs of eyes on them.
Nancy looked at them with exasperation and relief. Steve wondered if it was the same relief he felt, looking at her now. Like the last particles of their old relationship just evaporated into nothingness.
Robin’s gaze held a heavy wistfulness, almost making Steve feel guilty about finding a soulmate other than her.
It seemed like looking at their friends was easier for them than looking at each other.
"Ugh, you're gonna be insufferable together," Robin groaned wetly, her eyes on the verge of spilling over.
"Yeah. I'm so happy for you,' agreed Nancy with a small smile. Her eyes were trained on Steve, and he reciprocated the gesture, an unspoken understanding passing between them. The relief of finding someone else, the reassurance that their hearts were now safe in different hands, that they could just breathe and be friends.
With that out of the way and Eddie's hand in his, Steve needed to check on his first soulmate. His side pressed into Robin, eyes searching. She wouldn't meet his gaze, her eyes trained on the boys’ tangled palms, tears still threatening to spill over. He tried reaching out, his free hand gently squeezing her elbow. This seemed to bring oxygen back to her lungs as she breathed in and looked up for a fleeting second at her friend, before turning to Nancy.
"Uh,” she winced, looking elsewhere immediately. “It's okay if you don't feel comfortable with it. It's not like you have to do anything about having a soulmate, there is no pressure, no obligation-"
"Robin." Nancy knew already that the fastest way to stop Robin's spiral was to interrupt it. "Do you want to go on a date with me?"
Robin gaped at her.
"Really?"
Nancy shrugged, a shy smile on her lips.
"I've never considered dating a woman before, but I'm not against the idea," she explained. "Besides, Steve got on point soulmates, why wouldn't we work out too? I'd like to give it a shot."
Robin bit her lip, her whole body buzzing in place.
"People aren't gonna like it."
Nancy snorted, her cute face twisting with distaste.
"Honestly, I'm used to it by this point. And it's not gonna be as bad in a bigger city."
Robin gawked at her, eyes huge, like two ponds pulled in by the moon. The implication of Nancy's statement was stuck in her throat.
She seemed to realize it too but only shrugged bashfully.
"I'm aiming high, I'm not gonna stay in this shithole forever."
Watching his best friend freeze up, Steve swooped in, his arm gathering her closer to his side.
"Calm down, Casanova, go on a date first, okay? Step by step," he reminded her quietly with a shit-eating grin.
She pushed him away, cheeks pink. But he was right. Why worry about the future when there was still a first date to plan?
"Okay, so," she gulped. "Where do you wanna go?"
