Five Times Derek Failed To Tell Stiles How He Feels (+1 Time Stiles Knew Anyway) by WhoNatural
(1/1 I 3,338 I Teen)
Stiles grins, impish and proud, and scrabbles at another piece of his notebook. Derek is determined to ignore it - he really is, but Stiles’ legs are longer than they might seem and his reach includes the front leg of Derek’s chair.
He sighs, put-upon, and unfolds the note,
Wanna go steady w/ me? Y[ ] or Y[ ]
you know you're on my mind by bibliosexual
(9/9 I 16,371 I Teen)
If there’s one thing Derek’s learned in life, it’s that crushing on someone who lives on an entire other fucking continent is probably a bad idea.
I'm a War of Head Versus Heart by NieR
(5/5 I 23,091 I Explicit)
Being FWB with Derek Hale is great. Awesome, even.
But somehow, somewhere along the way, Stiles thinks he might have fallen in love.
And, well, shit.
Two Minutes for Holding by captaintinymite (augopher)
(18/18 I 121,498 I Explicit)
There were three things college hockey players Derek Hale and Stiles Stilinski knew for certain. 1) Their lives revolved around hockey, 2) They were madly in love, and 3) Derek was so far in the closet he might never find his way out.
They'd been together for two years now, and for two years they'd been a secret with only a few people knowing about them. Yet Derek's fear kept them from moving forward: fear of his family's rejection, fear of his sexuality tanking his father's career, fear of the rampant homophobia in professional sports. The ruse was growing thin.
Something had to give.
Or: The story of how one epic NCAA Championship run and college, served as the backdrop for some of life's great hardships.

Put Down in Words by paintedrecs
(31/31 I 203,706 I Mature I Sterek)
“Oh,” Stiles said, his voice coming out low and breathy, “fuck me.”
“I don’t think that’s on the syllabus, but we can check to see if there’s a spot open in any of his classes,” Scott said, grinning.
“This isn’t an actual professor, though,” Stiles insisted, unable to resist brushing his thumb over the sharp line of the man’s bearded jaw. He was laughing at something off-camera, the shot taken in three-quarters view, his coat collar casually rumpled and opened to reveal a sliver of a simple grey t-shirt. The whole thing was deliberately calculated to lend him a more accessible feel, and god help him, Stiles was falling for it.
*
When Stiles signed up for Dr. Hale’s intro to history class, he had two goals: knock out the credits his advisor was bugging him to complete before he graduated, and spend a few hours a week daydreaming about his sexy professor’s salt and pepper beard.
Derek, a few months away from turning forty and not sure when his life had started feeling so damn lonely, had never encountered someone like Stiles before. Bright-eyed, sharp-tongued, determined to throw Derek’s carefully cultivated world into disarray…and absolutely the last person Derek should be falling in love with.

Not now Jack Nicholson
Ever take a mirror selfie with your daughter when internationally-renowned actor, filmmaker, and three-time Academy Award-winning Hollywood icon Jack Nicholson gets in the way? God dammit Jack, not again. That right there is the problem with actors: they are incapable of realizing that the world does not revolve around them.
Well, as it happens, around four years ago @cctinsleybaxter was wondering where’s that photo of kubrick getting a mirror selfie with his daughter and jack nicholson’s in the foreground because he thought they were taking a picture of him asdfghjkl, and, despite our collective irritation, we could not help but admire it one more time. It was high time, if you will.
Nicholon's out-of-focus folded arms, proud posture, and satisfied little smile—a smile that says this is my time to shine—Kubrick's mildly perturbed expression at having his picture with his daughter spoiled, and her look of dry amusement. It is, quite simply, a classic and thoroughly deserving of every last letter of its asdfghjkl. For this is an image that should hang in The Louvre; but only because it, too, was placed there by mistake.

never grow up, nh13
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
nico watches his daughter grow up as a single dad (7.8k)
nico hischier x daughter! reader
this song reminds me of me and my dad so bad so i needed to write this out and it was so cute i love how it turned out despite it taking me like two months to do
reader would’ve been born in 2016, so she’s seven in real time! nico will be 31 in the scenes she’s 14 and 35 in the scenes she’s moving out
your little hands wrapped around my finger, and it’s so quiet in the world tonight
nico gulped, staring at the nurse that was holding you- his baby girl, soon after saying that your mom hadn’t made it.
the pregnancy was complicated, and the fact that he hadn’t known you were on the way until merely a few days ago hadn’t helped your mothers case.
you were the product of a one night stand, and he was never meant to know about you. then, her doctors warned her of how deeply rooted her complications truly were, and she decided that you should have a biological family, if nico would have you.
the nurse set you in nicos arms and smiled sadly at the sight of him, a tear rolling down his cheek as you cooed the second you reached him.
“hi, sonnenschein” he sniffled, your eyes squinting at the light of the room, your hand reaching out for him.
he offered you a finger, tears blinding him as he felt you clutch your hand around it. he quickly wiped his eyes, getting his hand back around to hold you properly and adjusting you against his chest
you looked up at him with your mouth agape, his own eyes staring back at him and building the ache in his heart.
“she’s beautiful,” he murmured to the nurse, leaning down and pressing a kiss to your forehead.
then, for nico, it was like his whole world stopped and he knew that for the rest of his life, you’d be his sun. everything he did would be for you, revolving around you. if he hadn’t wanted to do it he’d remind himself that he needed to, for his sunshine.
everything went mute in his ears save for the sounds of your fussing when he adjusted you once again, a little nervous he was doing it wrong.
for you, he couldn’t be doing it wrong. he needed to protect you- it was his job. he swore that to himself.
your little eyelids flutter cause you’re dreaming so i tuck you in, turn on your favourite night light
“uncle jacky’s gonna bring the snacks, and we’re gonna watch your favourite,” nico grinned as he picked you up from your underarms and you squealed
“sully!” you screamed in excitement, giggling as nico set you down on your dresser and picked out some pyjamas for you, watching as you tried to get down and do it yourself.
“i do it. want- i do it” you fussed, getting frustrated when your tip toes couldn’t reach the floor from your seat and you found yourself too afraid to take the small jump
he helped you down and you clung to the side of his leg, looking up at him with a pout as he ruffled your hair.
“daddy, i wanna try, please” you levelled, recently having been taught that you’re more likely to get your way if you ask nicely and don’t get frustrated when you can’t immediately take the reigns.
“okay, sonnenschein. which ones do you want?” you shook your head, still hugging onto him despite your request of independence
“no, daddy. you let me do it,” you explained, faltering before unwrapping yourself from him and pointing to your bedroom door.
he smiled sadly, nodding before leaning down to kiss your forehead and heading to the door. to your dismay, he left it open a crack in case you’d called for him.
you picked out mismatched pyjamas- a devils tshirt that went down to your calves and your rapunzel pyjama pants.
getting them on was a struggle- the size of the shirt making it so that your head went through every hole before finally ending up through the appropriate one, and your pants being put on backwards due to you not paying mind to look for the tag before sliding them on.
the second go around, you looked twice for the tag before sitting on the floor and getting them on, your previous attempt almost ending in you falling on your face due to how long your shirt was.
you ran out of the room and to nico with red cheeks from the frustrations of your change and he greeted you by picking you back up and setting you on his hip enthusiastically, faking a groan and beaming over at you
“i did it!” you giggled, wrapping your arms around his neck and whipping your head around at the door opening
“what did you do, munchkin? tax fraud?” jack yelled from the door, having heard your excited squeals from behind the door as he unlocked it.
nico smiled at his friend, setting you down so you could run to your uncle and jump up onto his shoulder- with his guidance.
“haven’t you heard? i have a teenager now. she’s changing all by herself,” nico gave you a pointed look, teasing you at your insistence that you didn’t want his help with the little things anymore
in reality, he felt a pang in his heart at the proud look on your face as you gushed to jack about your newfound ability to pick out your own outfits and find your way into them sans everything being backwards and inside out
you didn’t need his help anymore.
well. you did, but you were growing to be able to do most things on your own. soon, he’d be letting you pour your own juice, cut up your own hotdogs. he wouldn’t have to split the spaghetti in half before cooking it anymore.
“well. i guess i made the right choice of snack cause i got you…” jack trailed off, setting you down and rummaging in the bag he brought, pulling out what he’d gotten for you and crouching to your level
“blue gato and gummy bears. the teenagers common meal,” jack wiggled his eyebrows, opening his arms as you knocked into him for thank you hug.
“thank you uncle jacky,” you wrapped around him and then quickly pulled away, grabbing the snacks and running to the living room, screaming about watching sully.
your refusal to call it by its true name stemming from not knowing what ‘inc.’ stood for, something nico wished would never go away.
the three of you got situated on the couch, the bag of gummy bears sat in your lap and your head leant on nico’s shoulder.
eventually, after you’d been banned from anymore gummy bears, you’d dragged yourself into his lap and clung onto his shirt, blinking away sleep as you watched the scene where they tried to make boo laugh
by the time the scene was over, you were out cold in his arms, lips parted and breathing slowed to a peaceful pattern of exhaustion.
he kept still until the movie was nearly over, glancing down at you while mike gifted sully the broken piece of boo’s door. he watched as you stirred, eyes fluttering slightly and your grip on his shirt tightening.
“you know you’re allowed to be a little sad that she’s growing up,” jack whispered, looking over at his best friend and niece before popping a piece of candy into his mouth
“what?” nico furrowed his eyebrows, shaking his head. he tried to play it off like he wasn’t dumb, he knew you would grow up and simultaneously away. like he’d been expecting it, and was feeling neutral.
“i saw the face you made, when she was talking about changing by herself. she’s your little girl- pretty much the one constant in your life and she’s changing, that’s allowed to be fucking with you,” jack raised an eyebrow, and nico bit the inside of his cheek.
“i just never want her to feel like she needs to hold herself back cause i want her to stay my baby,” he murmured, kissing you on the head.
“trust me. nothing is stopping her, ever,” jack chuckled, and nico smiled, nodding.
“i’m gonna go tuck miss grown up in and then we can watch something that’s not disney,” he patted jack on the shoulder, carefully standing up and adjusting you on his hip to bring you to your room.
jack nodded and took the remote, flicking through nico’s netflix account and deciding on a movie while you were being settled.
nico tucked you under the covers, placing your favourite stuffy by your heart before kissing you on the forehead once more and making his way to your bathroom.
he plugged in the little hockey stick night light you had, one you’d grown up using next to your bed and now kept in the bathroom for when you needed to pee at night.
he looked at you from the bathroom door, sighing and making his way out of the room, quietly closing the door.
to you, everything’s funny. you have nothing to regret. i’d give all i have honey, if you could stay like that
your giggles echoes through jacks apartment as luke let you play with his hair, butterfly clips and colourful elastics taking over nearly every curl
“you said you wanted to learn how to braid, kid. this is not braiding,” luke grumbled, looking over at jack who was taking pictures for nico.
“i already know how to braid. this is much more fun,” you retorted, falling on your side and onto the arm rest of the couch from your own giggles.
luke pouted from the floor, avoiding the gaze of his brothers camera, but secretly knowing that nico would love to open his phone in the morning to the video.
it was evident to the whole team that their captain was deeply resenting how much you’d been maturing lately, and to see you laugh at something so, well- stupid, would probably help him come to terms with it a little.
“why are you filming, jack?” you tilted your head, your laugh finally subsiding.
“for your dad, he’ll think it’s funny! also- what happened to uncle jacky,” he teased, earning a blush from you.
“gross. i’m not 5 anymore,” you pouted, and then your eyes landed on your work on luke’s hair. you gulped, starting to pull the clips and ties out of it.
his hand came up to stop yours, his head leaning back and his eyebrows furrowing with concern.
“hey! those are mine now,” his nose scrunched as you tried to push his head back straight, his hand slapping yours away and his head jerking away from you.
you rolled your eyes, getting up off the couch and storming towards your designated room at jacks place, slamming the door.
luke and jack shared a look, the eldest immediately shooting a text for nico to ditch whatever movie he was watching while you were meant to be having your ‘hughes sleepover’ and come over.
it was a crisp fifteen minutes before you heard the knock on the door of your room and you groaned, assuming it was jack trying to coax you out of your bad mood
you ignored him, shoving your face in your pillow, but not blocking your ears in enough time to hear that it was nico, murmuring a soft ‘sonnenschein’ from behind the door.
“go away,” you grumbled, pausing while staring at the door. “and don’t call me that,” you stated, voice crystal clear now.
nico’s lips parted, eyes fluttering shut as he leaned his head against the door.
“sweetheart, come on,” he pleaded, holding back from opening the door with the knowledge that it doesn’t lock.
when you didn’t answer, he took that as his queue to crack the door open. you were already staring at him, legs pulled up to your chest and the hood of one of jacks sweaters draped over your eyes
“why did they get you to come here when i’m fine anyways?” you asked, blinking away your worries as he closed the door and sat on the edge of your bed.
“probably because you’re not fine and i’m your dad,” he gave you a pointed look and you groaned, throwing your head back and letting your legs go straight.
“neither of them know what they said to upset you, sonnenschein. they’re worried, so am i,” he murmured, putting a hand on your calf and shaking it slightly, the nickname slipping out so effortlessly he hadn’t noticed he used it.
“cause we go through this same cycle where all of the sudden you feel smaller than everyone else and you hide away-“
“if i’m gonna be smaller than someone it’s definitely not jack.” nico stifled a laugh, shaking his head at your attempts to ward off his concerns with comedy.
he stayed looking at you, waiting until you eventually sighed and sat up to sit next to him, leaning your head on his shoulder.
you picked at the skin around your nails, his hand coming to knock yours apart at the nervous tic you’d seemed to pick up recently
“i don’t have any friends. not real ones, anyways. i always feel like you guys are talking about something secret and you just use kid words. everything means something else and i can feel it but i don’t understand,”
you finally looked up to him with nerves clear in your eyes and he frowned.
he cupped your head, kissing your temple and moving to rub your back. “sonnen- uh, y/n.. sometimes there are just things that you don’t need to know, yeah?”
you furrowed your eyebrows, a pang of guilt ringing at the solemn tone when he cut himself off from using your nickname.
“your life has been different, but it hasn’t been faster. i never wanted you to need to grow faster.” he murmured, humming slightly after to note he’d gotten your attention.
“some conversations are like scary movies. you always think you want to see them when you’re little, and when you finally know what it’s all about your heart goes fast, sometimes it’s a good thing, sometimes no,” you stared at your lap, contemplating what he was trying to explain
“sometimes there are scary movies kids can watch,” you tried, peeking over at him and seeing as he cracked a small smile.
“sometimes there are adult conversations kids should get to talk in,” he winked, squeezing your shoulder and bringing you closer to him, like a sat side hug.
you grinned to yourself, turning and wrapping your arms around him, burying your face into his chest.
“i don’t want to not be sonnenschein yet,” you murmured, nicos eyes fluttering shut in relief.
“you’ll always be my sonnenschein. and you gotta promise me you’ll never be embarrassed to have fun, hm? i better be sending you dumb pictures of jack from the retirement home knowing you’ll get a good laugh out of it,” you smiled and nodded.
“ok. you’re not allowed to go to a retirement home, though,”
you’re in the car on the way to the movies, and you’re mortified your moms dropping you off,
“no! dad! stop over here, stop the car. i can walk from here,” you fussed, face flushing after he’d teased that he would walk you to the door so he could see the boy you’d been going out with.
“i was joking, sonnenschein. i’ll bring you to the lot, c’mon,” he chuckled, looking over at you with not an ounce of hesitation to keep driving
“pull over,” you bit, fixing your hat on your head and sighing in relief as nico slowed the car down and pulled into a nearby parking lot.
“god, i should’ve just had him drive me-“
“he drives?” you pursed your lips, your dads eyes blown wide looking at you while you tried to come up with a defence.
“he has his permit.. but him mom lets him drive alone! it’s not like he’s that much older, dad, please don’t-“
“y/n, he drives,” he stated again, eyes widening a little further to add to the effect of his shock.
you tilted your head back with a groan, slouching in your seat in embarrassment.
“you’re going out with a boy at least two years older than you! he’s in high school,” he tried to reason, genuine worry etched all over his face at the age gap between you and your new boy
“i would be in highschool next month too if you would just let me stay home during road trips, but no! you drag me across the continent all year cause you don’t trust me! you can’t even trust me with this!” you shouted, arms gesturing vaguely in reference to the situation.
your stomach dropped as you watched his face fall, hurt clear in his gaze and his eyebrows drawn together slightly.
you had never discussed wanting to stay home and go to public school before now, and if he’d known it’s what you wanted he would’ve gotten someone to watch you years ago.
he couldn’t ignore the ache in his heart as he unlocked the car doors and adjusted in his seat, nodding stiffly.
“have fun. i’ll see you after,” he cleared his throat and you frowned, not moving an inch towards your door handle
“dad, i didn’t mean-“
“it’s alright. enjoy your movie,” he cut you off, avoiding your eyes. you sighed, dragging yourself out of the car and grabbing your bag, starting off towards the parking lot.
you waved shyly from ways away to your date, who’d already been standing waiting at the door.
“i thought your dad was driving you?” he tilted his head, the underlying meaning of his concern already swarming in your head.
“oh, uh. his practice ran late so i just took the bus,” you nodded, trying to walk into the building.
“he’ll pick you up though, right?” he pressed, not shifting from his position though you were nearly at the second row of doors.
you paused, still feeling guilt ridden from the way you’d lashed out at nico as you pulled out your phone.
“shit. i actually have to go, i’m so sorry,” you faked, sliding your phone into your hoodie sleeve and sliding past him, jogging back towards where you’d been dropped off.
pressing the phone to your ear, you hoped he would pick up. you knew he would- he always did.
“sonnenschein?” you closed your eyes, tears welting in them and desperately close to spilling.
“please come back,” you mumbled, sighing after the words spilled out, like a thousand pound weight had been taken off your lungs.
at fourteen there’s just so much you can’t do and you can’t wait to move out someday and call your own shots
“oh my god, dad. i’m gonna be fine!” you groaned, watching as your dad sifted through your school bag to make sure you had everything you needed.
“ok, kids don’t usually have their first days of school at fourteen. i’m nervous!” he defended, pouting slightly at you while you cracked a small smile.
you felt somewhat the opposite of nico- first day jitters something you apparently were immune to, even despite your peculiar circumstances regarding a ‘first day’
in your mind you had nothing to worry about. it would’ve been like you were simply transferring from another school
had you been any other kid transferring from online school, you might’ve been right
the second you walked into the building everyone either loved or hated you- there was no time to make your own impressions on people and have them determine if they wanted you around them or not, your family had already done that for you
even the people that weren’t interested in your dad and uncles, or even hockey in general seemed to have a clear idea of who you were.
it was easier for them to accept you, that way, you supposed. because most of the people approaching you to join groups at lunch or general social circles were evidently trying to avoid the topic despite obviously knowing you’d become the talk of the school.
by the end of the day you had clocked people attempting to sneak their way into the bubble with no true intentions of being your friend enough times for it to count towards a demographic.
not to mention, you’d heard things about your uncles you never thought you’d have to think about in your entire life
nobody stooped low enough to mention nico, at least.
you made it out of your last class with one friend. one person who wasn’t such a horrid liar they might as well have been telling you they were only in it to meet jack or timo right to your face.
you might’ve been alright with only one friend after your very first day of school had you not been the only name coming out of everyone’s mouth.
when you got home you dropped to the couch like a bag of rocks, your dad smiling bright as he was about to ask you about your day
when he saw your expression, his own dropped and he opened his posture for you to plop sideways into his arms.
“i can never look at jack in the eyeballs, like, ever again. maybe even luke, i just.. ew” you shivered in disgust, trying to shake everything you heard today out of your vision
“gross, sonnenschein. but we both know that’s not actually what’s bugging you,” he raised an eyebrow, earning a sigh from you as you adjusted to look up at him.
“it’s bugging me plenty, actually. but yeah. it just wasn’t great overall,” your voice trailed off at the end of your words, eyes flickering away from his as questions filled your head
“do you ever get sick of everyone thinking they know you, but you don’t know them? and then it’s like from that point, you can’t do anything to convince them that you’re not who they decided you were before you even introduced yourself, if you ever get the chance,” you asked, messing with the stray string dangling from the sleeve of your shirt
nico pondered. it didn’t really bother him. he knew what came with his job, and though he did his best to shield you from that, he couldn’t truly avoid it all even if he made a deal with the gods.
because he was all you had, there wasn’t any real way to hide you unless he left you to fend, something he knew he wouldn’t even think of.
“i think it can be a good challenge for you. you’re not me, or j, or luke, or whoever- i dont even want to touch on that. again; ew. but you’ll be able to show them you’re your own person, i know you will,” you shook your head, not even clocking his attempt to make you laugh
“they don’t care that i’m my own person. they know. it doesn’t matter if my own person is the coolest person ever. all they see is a door. i’m a door,” you explained.
you and nico had a thing for analogies. seemingly, even if they made no sense to anyone around, you two knew what you meant.
a lot of your uncles had tried to learn the language, but they never could communicate it like you and him, it was something you figured came with being his daughter- you inherited his vocabulary quirks.
“some of them have to care. when a door is locked, someone who actually wants to open it will find the key. everyone else will try and give up, a door won’t open for them, and you don’t need to. it’s not your job to give away the key,”
he ruffled your hair, brushing your bangs out of your face and giving you a pointed look- he didn’t want you to let everyone in just because you felt you needed to be popular
“and what if someone finds the key but doesn’t really care about what it means? leaves the door wide open,” you mumbled, clearly a little insecure that someone with enough will could slip though your usually prime ability to read people’s intentions
“well. in this case i think our door comes equipped with enough sass to kill an army. you’ll do well,” he winked, patting you on the shoulder.
“anything good about today? cant have been all bad,” you smiled a little, starting to talk about the one friend you made.
though it hadn’t been long, you trusted him.
nico seemed content enough that you made a friend, with not much regard that he was a boy or that you were very obviously looking at him with rose coloured glasses.
he trusted your judgement, he wanted that to be known.
“.. i actually was gonna ask if he could come over to help me catch up on some of the classes tomorrow?” you said hopefully, sitting up from your spot to stare at nico and hold your hands together wishfully
“that’s funny, sonnenschein. i have a game, you can stay home alone but you’re not having anyone over,” he stated, stern enough to get his point across, but not to intimidate
“that’s not fair! i’m old enough to hang out with a friend when you’re not here,” you complained, eyes dropping to a pout and your cheeks getting a little warm at your frustrations
“maybe, but you just met him and i don’t know him. it’s not happening,” you rolled your eyes, giving up on trying to convince him due to your lack of defence.
all you wanted was to be normal, and you knew that this was something kids your age usually did. they hung out with their friends, they claimed to be studying despite only ever watching movies and playing games
when you had your own place, your own individual life, you’d be allowed to do whatever you pleased. well, sort of, obviously.
“mom probably would’ve said yes,” nico glared at you as a warning, shaking his head with disappointment
“i knew her longer, i think she would’ve told you no,” he said calmly, trying to switch topics after he made himself clear
“you knew her longer? what, like three minutes longer?” you pressed, his eyes going a little wide, both from hurt and frustration
“i’m going to ignore the fact that you’re not meant to know what that joke means because i know that you’re frustrated, but your mama gave me you, and for that i love her, it doesn’t matter what we were before you came”
you didn’t know much about your mom and dad, but you knew they weren’t together.
“you weren’t anything before i came! you probably weren’t even meant to know me, cause she would’ve wanted me to be normal, all i want is to do normal shit!”
you started raising your voice, backing away from him and unfolding your legs, getting ready to stand up.
nico frowned as he watched tears pool in your eyes and your legs finally deciding to plant to the floor, standing and quickly walking away to your room.
he didn’t have much else to say, but he knew he needed to say it.
so, he made your favourite meal and knocked quietly on your door, a bowl already made for you in one hand while he used the other to push his hair back.
he jumped a little when your door swung open, your grouchy expression meeting his hopeful one.
you took the bowl from him, quickly setting it on your desk and latching your arms around his waist, head buried into his chest.
nico sighed, squeezing you back just as tight and pressing his nose into your hairline
“i’m sorry i said that about mama,” you whispered, sniffling into his shirt quietly.
“that’s okay, baby. you had a hard day. i’m just trying to make sure you’re being safe, you know?” you nodded slightly, moving your hands to grip onto his shirt
“kids are never allowed to do anything, i just want to be my own person,” you breathed out, jumbled in with your hiccups, a side effect of your tears.
“he’ll come over, sonnenschein. not tomorrow, but he will,”
take pictures in your mind of your childhood room, memorize what it sounded like when your dad gets home remember the footsteps, remember the words said
“its only a three day trip, dad, i’m gonna be fine!” you smiled at nico, excited to be home for the first time during a road trip. you loved going on them sometimes, but going on every single one for your entire life was tiring.
nico had still barely processed how much his routines were changing right in front of his eyes.
rather than setting you up for your online classes or making sure your book work was getting done, he was giving you a kiss on the forehead before you left for the bus in the morning.
rather than make sure all of your necessities were packed, he needed to make sure he had enough stuff in the house for you to keep yourself fed and taken care of while he went off alone.
“you call me if you need something? if i don’t answer the-“ you shook your head, the idea of him not responding to you sounding insane
“dad. you’ve had amanda bring you your phone on the bench for me before. i know you’ll answer if i need you,” you chuckled, his concerned face faltering to a small smile at your words
it was important to him that you knew you would always have access to him no matter what he was doing. hockey was his job, but technically so were you, and sometimes one had to come over the other. that was a war he swore you would always win.
"okay. but seriously if i don't pick up, then call the entire roster and every member of the organization until someone can get me to you," he reiterated, a smile taking over your lips as you rolled your eyes and wrapped your arms around his waist.
"i'm gonna be fine. but yeah, i promise," you confirmed, nico's chest feeling a little lighter as he wrapped you in a hug and rested his chin on top of your head
"and hey. stop growing on me, please?" he asked, pulling back a little to cup your face. you'd gotten a little too tall for nico's liking recently, started growing into what you'd look like for your adolescence. you'd lost your baby cheeks and the blonde ends of your hair had been long cut off and replaced with the same chocolate brown that adorned his own head.
you were always tall for your age, and it had only been highlighted for you recently, when you started going to school in person. only a few of the other kids matched your height or surpassed it, and you were definitely proud to say that you were catching up to jack (in your opinion, at least)
it was against most odds that you would end up growing taller than him, but nico was starting to honestly get worried.
soon, you would be driving yourself places and it felt like he only had a small amount of time left before you wouldn't need him anymore, especially now that he was allowing you to stay on your own during road trips.
you were cooking for yourself, you could stay home alone and had it not been for the horrid bus and subway scheduling in the city, there wasn't much that you truly relied on nico for anymore.
so he started cooking more often, started trying to get you to come with him to practices like you did when you were just a kid, as if you weren't anymore.
he had you come on the ice with him after the main practice, and sometimes akira would come out with the two of you and let you shoot.
he had the team agree to have a little scrimmage with you, allowing you to be captain of your own team, rivalling jack, of course. he let the two of you hold a mini draft and it was like he could breathe again when your first pick was used on him.
he was scavenging for things the two of you to do together. he found shows he thought you might like and couldn't wipe his smile when you fell in love with them, and refused to watch any new episodes without him
he tried to get jack to agree to movie nights, like the three of you used to, even though he was starting to build a family of his own and had much less time
he wanted to learn new recipes with you and even hosted christmas for jack, luke dawson and john that year so that you could help him with dinner.
he brought you on random errands with him just to soak up any of the time he had left with you.
that's why the three days he was gone felt more like three weeks. you were bored, lonely, and most importantly, cooking was much less fun without your dad. over the course of the last three days you found yourself on the balanced diet of uber eats and air fried chicken strips.
when you heard the door crack open at early morning it woke you, and you nearly fell out of your bed with how quickly you tried to get up and get your pyjama shorts on.
for a moment you listened, the sound of nico's duffel bag hitting the floor ringing familliarly in your ears, followed by the clattering of the shoe rack in the entrance from him setting down the shoes he wore on the plane
you were at the door as nico set his coat on the rack next to it, arms secured around him tight and his face lighting up at your excitement.
"hi, sonnenchein," without any words to describe what you were feeling, sleep still prominent in your eyes and your brain lagging from how fast you jolted to get to him, you just muttered "you can unpack later"
with that, you took his wrist and dragged him to the couch, his smile only ever growing as you pulled him down and fell right back asleep on his arm.
"i can unpack later," he confirmed, kissing your forehead.
so here i am in my new apartment in a big city, they just dropped me off, it's so much colder than i thought it would be so i tuck myself in and turn my nightlight on
"that's the last box!" you smiled, shoving the box of jack's truck shut and nudging him a little "i'm officially free" you wiggled your eyebrows
you seemed so genuinely happy to be leaving that nico almost felt guilty for how much he truly hated it. when you originally found the apartment, nico figured you would be denied because of your age- it wasn't every day that an 18 year old was trusted with monthly rent in new york city.
and then one day, you came skipping into the living room like a kid on christmas, an email open on your phone saying that your application was approved and you would be moving into your very own place on the first of the following month.
when he heard the news nico felt like his entire world was coming crashing down, but he refused to make that known to you. he knew how excited you were and he felt like it was his responsibility not to ruin it.
after all, this time would have come eventually, it was just coming so seemingly soon. he felt like he was bringing you home from the hospital just yesterday.
he stayed for as long as possible when he was helping you unpack all of your things, requesting at about 6 oclock that he order the two of you delivery and have movie night, even if it meant he was getting back to jersey so late at night he knew he'd regret it at morning skate.
you were happy to agree, even mentioning that you should host movie night and dinner a couple times a month, hopefully every week if your schedules allowed it.
nico was almost in tears as he nodded at your proposal, pulling up the doordash app on his phone and his thumb immediately going to your shared favourite restaurant, like it was a reflex.
"you look like you're trying really hard not to sneeze," you giggled, leaning on his shoulder and nodding as he hovered his thumb over your usual order, confirming it was what you wanted.
he breathed out a laugh, trying to stay light in order to spare the guilt he knew you'd feel if you had any idea how he was really feeling. you knew he was sad to see you grow up, but you surely didn't know the extent of how much he loathed it.
"it's sad for me, sonnenschein. my baby is moving- moved. my baby is moved out," he smiled sadly, looking down at you as your face twisted into realization.
"the only thing that's changing is that i'm not sleeping at yours anymore, dad. we'll still see each other all the time," you tried, genuinely tries to explain that you didn't think it would be that big of a change.
"i know. but it wont be as easy to just peek my head into your room and decide i want to spend the day with my girl. i wont get to see all of the dramatics in your daily rundowns even though i know you'll still text them to me," he explained, reminiscing at past times you'd told him stories and he got to see them animate with the flailing of your arms and the exasperated widening of your eyes.
"i didn't think of it like that. i only thought that we'd still be the same.." you murmured, the severity of the change you were making suddenly dawning on you as you took in what he was saying
"we'll be as close to the same as we can get, sonnenschein. i promise you," he kissed your temple, feeling you shift uncomfortably under his arm, your brain racing as you started to overthink
"yeah." you whispered, eyes drifting to the little hockey stick nightlight that was glowing in your very own kitchen. yeah.
oh, i don't wanna grow up wish i'd never grown up, could still be little. oh, i don't wanna grow up wish i'd never grown up, it could still be simple
"dad" you cried into the phone, clutching your chest and blinking away tears, not knowing what else you could say to grab his attention meaningfully.
"y/n?" you heard amanda's voice come in through the other side of the phone, then her keys jostling around as she made her way to the dressing room.
"it's- the game is over right? he's in the dressing room, he can take the phone?" you rushed out as best as you could, your voice shaking along with your jaw, making it hard for her to understand you.
"i'm almost there, just one second, y/n/n. can you take a deep breath for me?" you nodded, though she couldn't see you, taking a shaky breath in and out and clutching tighter at your chest.
"sonnenschein?" an out of breath nico came in from the other side of the phone, basically fresh off the ice from a win. you could hear him trying to get his equipment off while holding the phone, instructing dawson to help with his skates quietly as you tried to explain to him what was happening
"i don't know what's wrong, i- all of the sudden i just-" you shook your head, unable to explain yourself.
nico shushed you gently, requesting you focus more on your breathing than trying to explain yourself to him.
"my whole face just.. went numb, and then the rest of me, and i couldn't stop shaking, i can't stop shaking, i can't breathe, i don't like it," you cried, with a lot of trial and error in your words and your jaw aching from how hard you were trying to stop the shivering.
"you're okay, baby, i'm almost done. i'm gonna come get you, okay? and i'll stay for as long as you need me, i'm here, you're safe," he soothed, earning a cry from you as that's all you could really get yourself to let out
"where are you?" he asked slowly, tugging on the shirt of his suit and not even bothering to grab most of his things, jack would have it. lindy had made him unavailable for interviews since he saw amanda with the phone
"bathroom," you worked out, closing your eyes and focusing on your breaths. having him on the phone was doing somewhat of a wonder, knowing he would be with you to help soon was an even greater one.
".. do you feel sick, sonnenschein?" he murmured, trying to read what could have set your brain afire
"no, i don't think so. the floor. the floor is cold, i wanted cold," you clarified, your brain a scrambled mess of emtotions. you knew the underlying issue, you just didn't know why it was affecting you so gravely
“but now i’m shivering, and i can’t move-“ you tried, nico shushing you softly over the phone so you wouldn’t further stress yourself
"do you have a towel close? maybe put the towel on. warm up some. i'm in the car now, baby, i'm almost there with you," he remained eerily level headed despite the anxiety in his stomach caused by your own panicking.
he never wanted to have to hear you in this state for as long as he lived.
the line went quiet for a few moments as you ruffled around as quickly as you could manage, your limbs feeling like dead weight as you tugged your towel from it's hook and wrapped it around your shoulders
nico got adjusted in the drivers seat. buckling up and backing out of his spot silently and being grateful his car allowed him to hear you clearly
"dad?" he hummed, the sound coming through your phone softly and causing you to sniffle.
"tell me about when i was younger" you muttered, eyes fluttering shut in preparation for him to talk, like nothing was wrong, like he'd been calling back on something happy he'd always wanted to share with you and had only now remembered.
"when you were just small, you were very attached to lots of the team. your favourite was dawson. i think jack was a little insulted, but daws was so proud of himself," he started, gulping a little. it had been so long since you were that young
"he always brought you something for game days. usually a little toy or candy, sometimes he would colour with you before the game started, i think it helped remind him that the pressure didn't need to be on all the time." nico smiled to himself a little, looking back on how happy he was that the team loved you like that.
"he would carry you around the arena on his shoulders and you would tap all of the banners on the wall. he would stop if you wanted to trace or look at something. the first christmas he knew you he got you a big lego set.. a pretty garden with lots of flowers," you smiled sadly, clutching your chest and finding it helped soothe you
"during the all star break you guys built it together. you kept it on your dresser for so many years. you always fell asleep in his cubby if i had media and he was already gone... do- do you want me to keep-" you didn't need him to finish talking
"yes" he chuckled slightly, glad that your voice seemed to have returned even if you didn't quite notice it yourself. he was glad he could distract you.
he continued on to tell you about the first time you changed into your own pyjamas. the first time you cut up your own hot dog. the first time you made your own sandwich for lunch and put entirely too much butter on the slice of bread.
he told you about when you learnt to swim and skate, and as he worked through the heavy post-game traffic in newark, you both found a little peace in his words.
he told you countless little stories from your childhood up until he pushed open the door to your apartment, making his way to the bathroom and sitting on the floor next to you.
you were still shaking, twitching repeatedly, it seemed. almost like you were shivering from the cold and wet, but your skin was hot to the touch.
regardless, you climbed into his arms and clutched onto his shirt with the hand that wasn't over your heart.
"do you wanna tell me what's wrong, sonnenschein?" you looked up at him worriedly, like you thought he wouldn't approve of your answer.
"i don't think i'm ready. everything is too much," tears spilled from your eyes and nico's own softened, his arms tightening around your shoulders.
"i wanted to be on my own so bad i didn't realize how much of me still needed you there. i want my dad back. i want to have breakfast with you in the mornings and i want to know i have you there if i need, and i know i do. it just feels like i don't, in a way. i want to come home," you blurted, hiding away into his arm from embarrassment.
"i didn't realize how much it had affected me until i wasn't sleeping, and then, well- this." you finally looked up at your dad to find him with teary eyes, a little hurt laced in them.
"you didn't need to keep that from me, baby. you wanna know a secret?" you furrowed your eyebrows, nodding.
"i never wanted you to leave me. i haven't touched any of your room," you smiled a little, your face however turning to a grimace as you tried to fight tears. you sobbed into his arms, clutching on for dear life.
"it's too late, though. i have to stay here, don't i? i can't come home," you panicked again, your shakes that had previously calmed down some now back a little stronger.
"i would never let you sign anything that made you stuck, sonnenschein. i'll talk to the landlord. we'll get you home," he kissed your forehead, rubbing your back and cooing a 'shh' slightly to calm you down.
"can you stay here tonight?" you asked, voice a little raw, now.
"i'd never dream of leaving, my sunshine," he whispered against your hairline. his tears seeping into it a little.
"i love you, dad."
"i love you, too, baby,"

12:33 PM Toji called 12:33 PM He told me that my daughter collapsed in front of the twins? 12:34 PM And you got into a fight with her? 12:34 PM How did that happen? 12:34 PM Are you with her right now? 12:37 PM Answer me please, I need to make sure she’s fine (Missed Call) 12:38 PM Can you phone me back asap? Thx 12:38 PM I’m still in the office right now, wrapped up the weekly meeting with the operating committee 01:01 PM Hello? 01:01 PM Hey, are you there? (Missed Call) 01:12 PM Toji called again, he gave me a rundown, and I have to say… 01:12 PM I’m very, very disappointed in you
Perhaps the better word would be terrified, but Naoya was truly and genuinely astounded.
How the fuck did this happen?
Naoya could feel his breathing grow shallow and his body turn cold as he read through each message from his Chief Operating Officer once, twice, three times. For a while, he stared at his chat history, his shaking thumb hovering over the screen while his mind went blank.
What started as an argument between just you and him now had your father involved. Not only your father, though—but also Mai, Maki, and now Toji?! How bothersome. Of course, you had to drag everyone into this! The world always had to revolve around you.
Naoya could not think straight as his chauffeur sped him back to the office from Mari’s apartment later that day. Even when he returned to his CEO suite, he could hardly focus on his conversations with department heads or strategy discussions with the Board when Daisuke L/N’s messages haunted him like an omnipresent and malevolent spirit.
‘I’m very, very disappointed in you.’
Goddamnit!
Naoya did not miss how your father was absent from the afternoon’s meetings either (although he was not stupid enough to point that out aloud at work when Naoya himself was involved in why), nor did he miss his own father’s narrowed gaze which seemingly lingered on him longer than usual.
Oh goodness, did he know, too?
No, he couldn’t have. Otherwise, Naobito Zenin would have pulled him to the side by now and given him a long and stern lecture.
Yet, when the early evening arrived, Naoya ultimately decided he must talk to you directly.
Not because he actually cared about your well-being. (Ha, as if.) But because he needed to quash the possibility that the rest of his family, particularly his Board Chairman father, could get a whiff of his quarrel with you before all hell broke loose.
Moments like these warranted him to push aside his dignity before things could worsen.
His greatest fear would be for this recent argument to become a domino effect, as the downfall in this marriage would certainly place him in hot water.
With that, the current Zenin CEO then tapped his phone for your contact.
He needed to check up on you but ended up in voicemail.
So, he dialed once more.
Voicemail.
Again.
Why were you not picking up his calls?
You always found a way to irk him with how ungrateful you could be. Sure, there was no secret that you hated him. He would admit he was rude, belittling, and patronizing, treating you like a trophy to tote around, a doll to splay at his will, and a woman who needed to learn her place. He knew this and you knew this, because he exclusively tolerated this marriage as a means to accelerate his life.
Despite everything, he made sure his wife was well-fed and looked after, only for you to throw a tantrum and now get his extended family involved? Ludicrous. Why not focus on the good things about him? Could you not see how he had attempted to reach you at least thirty times throughout the day? (His ultimate reason admittedly was selfish, but that’s not the point.)
Anywho, since when did you think that ignoring him was acceptable?
In a frustrated fit, Naoya tossed his phone into his desk’s paper heap and huffed.
To set things straight, he had made many sacrifices in his life to get to his seat today, like how—back in the day—he had to watch TV anchors praise his older cousin while sipping champagne in the Maldives with…whatever girlfriend he had been with at the time. Life had been hard, but he at last had everything he should’ve been entitled to since birth. This position, this family, and this company belonged to him, regardless of what stupid fucking traditions dictated.
Unsurprisingly, when Naoya took the helm, everyone scrutinized him. Sure, he might have lacked in a few (or, more accurately, a lot of…) regards since he hadn’t been built into the position the way Toji Zenin had been, but having you as his wife made him look good in family conversations and public discourse.
He just needed a little more time to get people to trust him. Then, once all the pieces clicked into place, he resolved to toss this marriage to the side.
That ‘time,’ he hoped, would be soon.
For now, he just needed to keep you for as long as he sought fit.
Buzz.
Well, speak of the devil.
You must finally be returning his call.
The sky had gone dark in the windows behind him now, but Naoya practically leaped from his seat, scrambling and shoving papers aside to find his phone buried beneath several printed reports. He hated how his hands quivered as he held the device, not that he could control himself at this point, and he snapped the moment he swiped at his screen.
“Where the hell are you?” Naoya hissed, clipped and impatient.
He did not get an immediate response, which infuriated him even more since he taught you to acknowledge him on the phone.
But then, he learned why.
Because instead, Naoya heard a low and harrowing chuckle.
“I guess you missed me, kid.”
Tumblr media
The end to a marriage, for obvious reasons, would never be as glamorous as the start to one.
Many would dream for years about a wedding, but far fewer would think the same about a separation.
‘I'm going to file for a divorce.’
Admittedly, you were nervous when you announced the decision aloud in a crowded room for many eyes to see and ears to hear.
After all, even if you recognized the need for a change in your matrimony, you feared the consequences. You didn't want to cause your families to grow apart or your fathers to resent you. In addition, Naoya had been such a dominating fixture in your life these past few months, and he had led you to believe your days without him would be meaningless.
However, no longer could you set aside your emotions for his sake, nor would you expend extensive effort to salvage your marriage for other’s desires. Your sole purpose henceforth was to live a satisfied life without sacrificing more than what you already have for a husband who hardly look your way.
As a result, when you acknowledged divorce as the best possible solution to your demise, you were grateful for the emotional support and relieved faces from your worried father, the younger teenagers, and your trusted therapists.
Especially Toji.
“Come with me,” the very man ordered once you stepped into his apartment’s corridor with him.
Everyone else had been brought down to the apartment’s lower level after the earlier discussion in the master bedroom, with Megumi forced to take on the role as host in his father’s absence. The younger Fushiguro might be aloof and sometimes awkward, but word had gotten around that he was a good chef with his aunts nagging at him to prepare dinner.
“C’mon, don’t you want to show us what recipes you have learned on TikTok?”
“...No, not really. Can we just order KFC?”
The other conversation that drifted upward was between your father and the other three therapists, which made sense given that they all used to be colleagues back when Toji had been the CEO.
There was laughter, chatter, and the entire brouhaha brought ease to your nervous heart.
“Ladies first,” Toji said at some point after you had trailed behind him. He had taken you several meters ahead, opening the door to invite you inside. “This is my home office.”
You did not yet see the point in him doing a House Tour 2.0, but you walked in upon his gesture anyway. The hardwood floor beneath you felt warm, your body heating up slightly despite the coolness in the air.
Toji kept his office space as tidy as the rest of his abode. He had a white leather couch situated by the doorway and a workspace configuration to the side with desk lamps, an expensive chair, and a dual monitor setup.
Above his screens, Toji probably had fifteen accolades in cherry wood frames, each to showcase his achievements as countless magazines named him the best leader, the top executive, and the most promising innovator.
What caught your attention, however, was the wall beside his workstation.
There was a corkboard.
At first glance, the tacked-on magazine cutouts and photograph snippings seemed like a messy litter on the brown surface, but thin red strings—which made this look like a detective movie prop—connected one piece to another and suggested an order to the chaos.
“What is this?” you asked, a question not directed to anyone in particular as you neared the corkboard without waiting for Toji’s permission.
Upon closer distance, the vague letterings and images became clear.
The newspaper cover story fastened at the very center read in big bold print: “Zenin Corporation Announces New CEO.”
As the realization dawned that this was what Toji meant to show you, the man’s measured footsteps came up from behind you. He stopped at your side, watching how you inspected each element on the corkboard as though his room was your laboratory and he was your professor.
“The World Economic Forum estimates that more than 5% of global GDP is lost to corruption around the world each year,” he began, crossing his thick arms firmly over his chest. “Many articles you see here had been published online only to be taken down not even a few hours later. I suspect that Naoya this year alone has spent hundreds of thousands, if not millions, bribing the Japanese media to curate the public image he needs.” He then pointed around. “Look for yourself.”
You would have called Toji out for being a total creep if the objective of this collection had not been obvious. With scarlet threads weaving together to reveal an elaborate web of deceit, Toji had been curating an exposé.
There was one photo from your wedding day. Standing at the altar with Naoya, you looked so happy and blissful back then, the vibrant bouquet in your hands a colorful contrast against the pristine white of your Vera Wang wedding gown, your face radiant with a smile oblivious to the heartache that would come.
This publication, you have seen before.
What you did not recognize, however, were the articles dated from nearly a year ago, well before your wedding day, with even more printed five months ago, two months ago, one week ago…
…and reading the titles made you feel sick.
Japanese Hotshot Shares Intimate Kisses with Rumored Girlfriend Photos Reveal Recently Married Executive’s Secret Affair? Exclusive: Zenin Corporation CEO Spotted in Mexico with Alleged Lover
The accompanying pictures had the same two subjects in plain clothes and baseball caps, showing off little skin to reveal their identities to prying busybodies. Yet, upon an immediate glance, you recognized Naoya Zenin as the taller figure and assumed his very precious ladyfriend must be the other.
Photographers had snapped the two embracing each other in a cab’s backseat, sharing a secret kiss after a luxury mall date, and holding hands while stepping into a private plane.
All to say, you were revolted.
The more you mulled on these printouts, the more you could feel visceral disgust build in your chest.
To think you once contemplated saving a marriage with a man like that. Whatever his plan was for him and this woman, did he intend to make you a side character to their romance until the day you would die?
Your gaze darted around, and the photo with the most unobstructed view of their faces placed you on pause.
All of a sudden, a hard lump formed in your throat because, Holy shit, she’s…stunning.
Seeing the woman who your husband had had his sights on immediately unlocked a whole new level of insecurities within you.
No wonder Naoya could not bring himself to be married to you when he had her.
The woman was exquisite, to say the least. Despite the picture’s poor quality, you noticed her bright elegant face, plump pink lips, and long full lashes—precisely the characteristics that would turn heads in a crowded room. In fact, you secretly wished that you possessed her overflowing pulchritude as well.
If she was an angel from your point of view, she must also be in Naoya’s eyes all the more.
You gingerly drew a circle around her with a finger.
“Is she his mistress?”
Why did you even ask that? You already knew the answer. But, you wanted to confirm the facts rather than satisfy your curiosity.
Meanwhile, Toji ran his index finger very slowly over his lower lip.
He answered a while later.
“Yes.” As you had expected. Then, he added, “But she’s also my ex-wife.”
What—
Your jaw dropped to the trenches.
If you thought tonight had been filled with enough revelations, this one really sealed the deal.
His…ex-wife?!
Unlike the man before you, hiding your deepest emotions had never been your forte. Instead, you had gone stiff as your mind reeled in shock.
“She’s…Tsumiki’s mom,” you said quietly at the realization.
Yes, you have heard a lot about her. However, to make the connection between the lady in the picture and the woman who owned currently Naoya’s (and previously Toji’s) devotion stirred awake a thousand emotions.
Anger. Bitterness. Resentment.
Megumi had told you plenty about her before.
‘Treated me like a bag of shit, spent all my dad’s money on her shopping sprees every weekend, and even neglected her own daughter—my stepsister.’
Her pretty face could only go so far in disguising her dark heart.
With this understanding, you finally grasped Toji’s bitterness when he first met you. How fickle fate had been to him. Comical, even! For his younger cousin to take his succession rights to the clan, his executive position in the company, and—to top everything off—his wife from his family. Only for you (of all eight billion people in the world) to show up at Toji Fushiguro’s office asking for sex therapy?
Now, you comprehended why Toji and Naoya despised each other.
In addition, you understood why Toji and his colleagues had been suspicious of you. Trust takes time to build yet a moment to shatter, and all of them have had this trust broken before. By Naoya, yes.
But also, by her.
“What’s her name?” you had to ask, ignoring the searing ache in your heart.
Your therapist, on the other hand, tried to play off his vexation by shoving his hands into his front pockets.
“Mari,” and also, “She still uses my last name.”
Wow.
The audacity that some people in the world have.
“Here let me help.”
“Hm?”
At first, you did not quite get what Toji was referring to until he started tearing the magazine photos and newspaper stories.
Wordlessly, you gawked at him, both in confusion and astonishment.
“Why—”
Before you could complete the thought, Toji had placed everything into a neat stack and thrust the pile into your hands. “There,” he said with finality. “If you are to file for a divorce, take these to Naoya. See what the bastard has to say. Staying with him any longer would be a fatal flaw.”
Toji had never seen a single interaction between you and his cousin in person, yet he could confidently say your husband was the hamartia in your life. Perhaps the signs had always been obvious. Or perhaps, his recent experience in a toxic marriage allowed Toji to notice the red flags in yours from miles away.
“If you give him too much time, he’ll come up with his offenses,” he went on. “We don’t need to outfight him, though. We simply need to outthink him.”
Something about Toji’s emerald eyes gleamed in a way you had not seen before.
It was a different side to him, one where he planned and strategized, a flickering core of the businessman he used to be.
“Hi.”
You and Toji froze at the sound.
Megumi’s voice had startled you two as the boy peered in from the hallway, waving a phone in his hand—your phone. “Sorry to interrupt but, uh, he called again.”
Interestingly enough, Megumi did not need to explicitly mention a name for you all to know who he referred to. As your screen flickered on, you noticed the numerous missed calls and text messages that had flooded your notifications, all from one particular culprit, no doubt.
Instead of embarrassment, your body surged with aggravation at how your husband suddenly seemed desperate to know your whereabouts.
So now he cared, huh?
Before you could retrace your steps towards the door, however, Toji had already done so. He retrieved the device from his son’s hands and started dialing a number from your phone.
You tried to stop him. “Hey, what are you—”
But Toji dismissed you, pressing your phone to his ear as the call began to ring, and his lips curled into a wicked grin when the other line must have picked up.
“I guess you missed me, kid.”

end notes: I am excited to show the interaction between Toji and Naoya—I have been thinking about their conversation for a long time! This chapter is less of a whirlwind and more of a setup for the rest to come. Thank you for your support!

Counting Steps (Vash the Stampede x Reader)
Summary: While traveling with Vash, you get a wound and decide to hide it from him.
A/N: Howdy! This is my first Trigun fic, please be nice hehe. This was originally written with Tri Stamp Vash in mind, but then it turned into me mixing him with 98 Vash, and so now we have this.
I'm considering making a little series about the reader and Vash because I am so whipped for this silly blonde man, the brain rot is insane. If that's something you'd be interested in lmk!
I hope you guys like it <3 ALSO this was cross-posted to my AO3
Warnings: Mild violence, mild blood/injury, fainting
Word Count: 2.5k
This was inspired by this quote from @creativepromptsforwriting: “When were you going to tell me you were bleeding? When you’re already dead?!”
Tumblr media
98. 99. That’s another 100 steps. Start over.
You grit your teeth, clutching your side fiercely. Luckily, you are wearing black, so Vash hadn’t seen the sticky, dark stain appear. Your faithful traveling companion walks several paces ahead of you, leading the two of you to a nearby settlement. You couldn’t be that far away now, right? God, you hope not.
You lose your footing, stumbling briefly before catching yourself. White hot pain shoots through your abdomen, and you can’t stop the hiss that slides out between your teeth. Fortunately, Vash doesn’t seem to be able to hear it over the sounds of the wind. A bead of sweat rolls down your face, and you pause, allowing yourself to pant for a moment. Not for long, though. You have to keep moving.
Counting your steps in increments of 100 has been your method of keeping yourself focused. It was a simple task, something to devote all of yourself to for the time being. If you could keep going, one step at a time, you knew you could make it to the town.
17. 18. 19. That’s another 20.
Your mind wanders to the very situation that caused you to get an injury in the first place. What a mess today has been.
You have been traveling with the infamous Vash the Stampede for months at this point. Shootouts and run-ins with bandits and bounty hunters made for another Tuesday. Usually, that was no problem for you guys. You knew your way around a gun and could certainly hold your own, so what the fuck happened today?
30. 31. 32.
The two of you had stopped at a small plant you’d come across while traveling in the desert, thinking it was a good chance to take a breather. Little did you know, you were walking right into a stick-up, with a small group of bandits robbing a family that had stopped there as well. You and Vash stepped in quickly to help, easily incapacitating the bandits. Vash’s attention readily became focused on helping out the family, noticing that the oldest child had gotten a gash on the head.
Allowing Vash to handle the damage control inside, you had stepped back outside to catch your breath. You walked over to the side of the building, leaning against it and resting in the shadow it produced. Out of the corner of your eye, though, you saw movement. Apparently, there was another person involved that had slipped away. You sprung into action, running around the building to where you’d seen the figure disappear. After that, everything happened really fast.
The man was quick, and he lunged at you with startling speed. You were able to dodge the initial thrust of his knife towards your gut, but you didn’t sidestep fast enough, feeling the blade tear a gash into your side. The adrenaline in your system helped you to ignore the pain, and you whipped around, kicking the knife out of his hand and twisting his arm behind his back. Before he knew it, you had him pinned on the ground, arms pulled uncomfortably behind his back. Drawing your small revolver from its holster, you swiftly hit the back of his head with the grip, feeling his body go limp under you.
After he passed out, the tension left your body and you leaned back with a sigh. It was at this point that you started to feel the sharp, stinging pain radiating from your side. Glancing down with a wince, you moved your jacket aside, laying your eyes on the gash that had been so generously given to you by your friend here. Because you wore your jacket open, it looked like it had blown out of the way and been spared by the blade. So, at the very least, you wouldn’t be spending the evening sewing the jacket up. Your body was a different story, unfortunately.
It was a small, but deep, clean cut. It wasn’t anything worse than what you’ve had before. But, it would definitely need some stitches. You were almost positive you could patch this up with the first aid kit inside.
You released your jacket, heaving yourself off the ground with some effort, applying pressure to the wound. Once on your feet, you made your way back around front, finding the entrance to the small building.
Vash was crouched, chatting to the teary-eyed children, calming them down with a practiced ease that came from many years of experience around kids. He smiled at them, and said something that drew a giggle from the children. Their parents watched from nearby with grateful smiles, eventually pulling him into a conversation with them as well. A soft smile formed on your lips, as it often did when you saw him have these types of interactions.
Your pain brought you back down to reality though, and you grimaced. Your eyes scanned the room for the first aid kit, and you found it lying on a small table. You quietly walked over, and immediately grabbed some gauze to hold against the wound. You sifted through the contents, searching for the thread, knowing you definitely had some. It wasn’t until you remembered that one of the kids had gotten a cut to the head that you turned around, seeing the last of your thread stitched up in a wound already. Vash might be holding onto some more, but even if he were, it likely wouldn’t be enough.
Well. Shit.
You faced away from everyone again, trying to think of what to do. You were less than half a day’s walk from the next town. You didn’t have any supplies other than some gauze that would help. Telling Vash would worry him, and he’d definitely want to carry you the rest of the way, even though you knew his prosthetic had been causing him soreness recently.
You were just gonna have to suck it up and walk. You stuffed gauze into your pockets as discreetly as you could, before hearing your name called from behind you softly. You turned your head to the side, heart skipping a beat at seeing those gorgeous blue eyes gazing at you.
“Everything okay?” he asked quietly, concern creasing his brow. You wanted to reach out and smooth your fingers over it, not wanting him to worry about anything.
Instead, you gave him a convincing smile. “Yeah. I found another guy outside. We should probably tie him up with the others before leaving.” The person running the plant assured you both that they would be fine while they waited for authorities to arrive to take the men away. You made sure your body was angled to where he couldn’t see your bloody hand or the gauze.
He raised his eyebrows, surprised to have missed one, but ultimately nodded, letting you know he’d take care of it. “I don’t know what I’d do without you, Mayfly. I’m getting sloppy!” he joked, and you’d giggled in reply, heart fluttering every time he called that. It was just friendly, of course. Because that’s all you were - friends.
That’s another 60 steps. Or was it 70?
You jam your eyes shut, breathing through the worsening pain. You sigh defeatedly. You ran out of gauze an hour ago. The bleeding has slowed, but not fully stopped. Not with all of the pulling from walking. At least the sun is starting to go down, giving you a break from this damned heat.
You look up, seeing Vash’s back ahead, his red coat blowing gently in the wind. The distance is getting greater between the two of you. You’re starting to regret not filling him in about your situation. After noticing your silence not long into the walk, he’d asked once more if everything was all right. You smiled, told him you were fine, and that you’d tell him later tonight. He accepted that begrudgingly, giving you a Look, but had ultimately given you space.
You stop walking, your breathing uneven and heavy. Your vision wasn’t quite right either… had you really lost that much blood? The chill settling into your bones screams ‘yes’ at you. Vash is getting too far away. Fuck, fuck, fuck.
You feel your body trembling, and you close your eyes, a dull ringing in your ears beginning. Your grip on the gauze pressed into your side is getting looser, but you’re starting to care less. It’s not like it’s working anyway.
You are startled out of your thoughts by the feeling of hands gripping your upper arms. You gasp, opening your eyes, struggling to get them to focus for a moment. Once they do, you see Vash in front of you. His mouth is moving, and he looks worried. Oh. They’re his hands, you note, glancing at his arms.
The ringing in your ears subsides enough that you can hear his voice again. He’s calling your name.
“…you okay? What’s wrong?” He asks, searching your eyes.
“Huh?” You manage eloquently.
He sighs, closing his eyes, but he doesn’t let go of you. “You’ll be the death of me, Mayfly. What’s wrong?” He asks. “I know you said you’d tell me later, and, well, it’s technically later now, so…” he trails off, but his words have an expectant tone to them. This doesn’t really seem to be something he wants to budge on.
Not that you’re planning on withholding what’s happening at this point. You are almost certain you’ll pass out here soon.
“Um…” you start, averting your gaze. Finally, he seems to notice the way you’re holding yourself. Specifically, the placement of your arm, tucked into your jacket. His expression shifts into something more knowing, and he seems to have caught on.
He gently reaches down to pull your hand away so he can take a look, but as he does so, your knees buckle and you start a hard fall to the sandy ground. You shut your eyes, waiting for the impact that never comes, as you are wrapped up in a pair of strong arms before falling very far.
You are slowly lowered the rest of the way, and find yourself resting against Vash’s chest on the ground. He’s muttering something under his breath, and you’re murmuring an apology. He pulls your jacket back, sucking in a sharp breath when he sees the bloodied gauze.
“When were you going to tell me you’re bleeding? Once you were already dead?!” He asks, and yeah, you probably deserve that. He’s peeling back the gauze gingerly, scrutinizing the wound, concern etched into his gorgeous face. He’s talking, likely scolding you, but that annoying ringing in your ears is back, so you can’t hear him. You should not be thinking about how pretty he looks right now, but your vision is turning black and you don’t really care anymore. His head turns to face you, his eyes widening. There’s something in his expression you can’t quite identify.
But everything feels heavy, and you are very tired. You slump into his chest, closing your eyes.
✧⋄⋆⋅⋆⋄✧⋄⋆⋅⋆⋄✧
The next thing you know, you are lying in an uncomfortable bed, tucked into itchy, white sheets. You groan, taking in how dry your mouth is and how bad your side hurts.
Oh yeah.
You open your eyes, sitting up with a gasp. You blink hard to clear your vision, but curl into yourself as pain shoots through your abdomen. You feel a set of familiar hands take you by the shoulders.
“Woah! Take it easy! Just take a deep breath for me, okay?”
You feel one of the hands move from your shoulder to rub your back soothingly, and you look up. Those beautiful blue eyes meet yours, relief flooding his features. Vash murmurs your name with a relieved smile.
“There you are. Are you okay?” He asks softly, gently pushing you to lay back down. You put up no resistance.
“Yeah, just a bit sore,” you manage, glancing down to your wound. You move your hand to touch it, applying pressure experimentally, but he moves your hand away, holding onto it instead. Like a worried friend, you remind yourself. You take a moment to glance around the clinical-looking room, and think you already know the answer, but ask anyway. “Where are we?”
His thumb moves slowly across your knuckles, just like a friend would do. In a friendly way. “The local clinic. We weren’t very far out of town when you passed out. I just brought you here right away. That was last night.” His expression shifts from soft to scolding, and he runs his other hand through his blonde hair. “You nearly gave me a heart attack! Don’t do that again!”
You offer a small, apologetic smile. “I’m sorry, Vash. We’d used the last of the thread for stitches on one of the children, and I thought I could tough it out.”
He stares at you, and you wilt a bit at his hurt expression. “Why wouldn’t you tell me though? We may not have been able to stitch you up right away, but I could have-“
“Carried me into town?” You finish, and he nods. You reach up, gingerly touching his prosthetic arm. His eyes widen slightly, not expecting your touch. “I know your arm has been bothering you lately, and I didn’t want to make it worse.”
His expression softens endearingly once more at your reasoning, the look he’s giving you making you fall in love with him all over again.
“Oh, Mayfly,” he murmurs, “let me decide what I can handle, okay? It wouldn’t have been so bad.”
You understand, but you also frown a bit at his words, raising an eyebrow at him. “But who looks after you? You have and would push yourself past every limit you have for the sake of someone else.”
He sighs, but doesn’t deny what you say, either. “How about we work on compromising a bit? We’ll look after each other, and make sure we aren’t pushing ourselves too hard.”
You try to level him with a stare, but end up relenting with a sigh and a smile. “Fine.”
He smiles back at you, mirroring your tone. “Fine.”
There’s a beat of silence, and it seems like something comes to his mind at that moment. His smile becomes something more like a smirk, and you regard him suspiciously.
“What,” you deadpan, somewhat dreading whatever he has to say.
He props his elbows on your bed, resting his chin on his hands, leaning forward.
“Nothing! I’m just flattered,” he replies, and you really, really don’t like the mischievous glint in his eyes.
“By…?” You ask, narrowing your eyes.
“I didn’t know you thought I was pretty.”
You scoff, rolling your eyes. Of course you do. But you’d never just say that.
“Yeah, right.”
“No really! You said so yourself! Remember? Something like, ‘I should not be thinking about how pretty you look-’”
You choke, blushing furiously. Oh my god. Right before you passed out. You must’ve accidentally said that out loud, delirious.
“I-I did not!” You sputter back, but you know it’s futile. He’s laughing too hard. You hate it, but even now, as he is laughing at you, you can’t help but love the sound of it. You’d do just about anything to keep him laughing and smiling like this.
He pokes your cheek, his laugh dying down. “For the record, I think you’re pretty too. ‘Specially when you’re blushing like this.”
Holy. Shit.
Never mind. You wish you had bled out.

(January 22 - January 31, 2024)
Last of January.
You know, I realized just HOW MUCH I draw. One month into 2024 and I've already made 37 drawings.
Anyway, here's Quentin and Phoebe hugging for hugging day, which was January 21. Most of these drawings revolve around them and other campers. If you're down with that, look under the cut for more.
Tumblr media
Look, on Quentin's campster bio he says he hugs a lot. THEREFORE, I can draw him hugging his bestie as much as I want.
Tumblr media
[quentin singing] your love takes me higher and HIGHERRR
Tumblr media
baby, you're spinning me around ... what am I gonna do?
Tumblr media
I wanted to draw Kitty grinning like a cheshire cat. I did but I also got very distracted.
Tumblr media
boogie on down
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was feeling super hyper when drawing this. (You really think I'd let you go through this without Misha drawings?)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I dunno if I've ever stated it, but I think J.T. is peak character design. He looks pleasant. He IS pleasant. He's a PSYCHIC COWBOY. He doesn't shoot a gun, he shoots BULLETS with his MIND. It doesn't get better than that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dart looks down on the other campers for not taking psychic training seriously ... except for Dogen, of course. Dogen is exempt from his contempt. That's how I like to imagine it anyway.

Houseki no Kuni ch.107 spoiler
A flashback in chapter 31, Sensei teaching the recently born Phos:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chapter 107, the rocks and the final piece of original Phos:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"It's moving..." "That is -- our youngest sibling." "Yeah." "That's right." "Very true." "Heard it. A kind sound." "So cute." "Our youngest sibling."
"Let's all take good care of it."
Yep, this parallel is having its grip on me. Pitapat is sobbing and so am I. Also couldn't help noticing how the gems immediately placed an expectation on Phos ("will they fight?"), but the rocks instead expressed how they will love them. Goddammit.
(Just for the record I don't think the gem was being mean on purpose for asking that question, nonchalantly even. But it did show how the structure of their society and way of life had shaped their line of thinking, where everyone was expected to have a task, contribute something, and fighting off Lunarians was a Big Deal that almost everything revolved around.)
The commentary line in the final page was the cherry on top:
初めからみんながいる。“末っ子”フォスフォフィライトはひとりじゃない。 Together with everyone since the beginning. Phosphophyllite, the youngest child, isn't alone.

each Sunday the apprehension rises .. and to some it may seem like a deliberate act of mine to gain attention , but it is factual ..
the appreciation cometh but at the appointed hour .. and has been so for all these years .. but there have been several of them at times when the reversal has played upon one .. and the ‘one’ be the one truly yours .. and all truly yours ..
it is not to be disowned .. it is the way of life .. it’s the revolve of life .. as does the Earth revolve, so does fate and time and circumstance and love and recognition .. and .. following ..
in time, all celebrity followings fail ..  it is the call of nature .. nature is the purest ingredient of the Universe .. it carries the most astonishing quality .. called  balance .. if it did not, the Universe we abide in, would have perished .. not have existed ..
look around .. you will find the essence of the failing .. remembered , yes of their standing and value .. but not of their following ..
you need commemorations .. and special moments for remembrance .. to be drawn back in time  .. for momentary appeal and applause .. and then .. it’s back to the new , the recent , the adored popular , ruling the throne of natures revolve  .. in time .. for they too shall be in the limits of their time .. till the next ..
I am who I am .. for mine .. that be the best cavern for the resting calm .. discover it soon .. design and decorate it well .. you will be spending a lot of your time there .. at last .. unknown , un disturbed , alone  ..
to indulge in the self .. without inhibitions or responsibilities .. un answerable to any .. but to the peace you shall create  !!
My love and care and more ..

Sam's Advent Adventure
Tumblr media
I am excited to announce that I am going to be posting a new story every single day in December! I would like you all to be part of it and therefore I am accepting any and all Drarry prompts (except MCD). It doesn't have to revolve around Christmas if you don't want to, anything is welcome. The prompts can be just a few words, a genre or even a short little snippet of something. I will pick 31 prompts out of my asks inbox. I've never done anything like this before, but I am looking forward to it and I hope that y'all are too!

Hello, hello! I would like to request a drabble with Leona Kingscholar and the prompt, "after a gunshot wound" + fem! reader, please. Make the ending happy, please. I can't stand sad endings.😥 Thanks!
reqs are open :) @savanaclaw1996
after a gunshot wound (mafia!au for my 31 days of aus)
leona; 2,147 words; angst w/ a happy ending bc... u just said that the end had to be happy, right? lol; also cw for blood and guns
clean hands.
no one would mistake him for a murderer, not by the soft of his hands, the tenderness of palms, but as he tears off his ruined gloves with his teeth, the blood still warm and dripping even as it coagulates against his skin, he wonders what the world might think if only they knew the truth — that being a prince to a dying empire also means courting death.
and he has never been one to fuss over keeping his own hands clean.
unlikely savoir.
if you were to ask him why he saved you, why you of all people, leona doesn’t think he’d be able to find an answer. because the answer — the true answer — is far too pedantic: that his body moved before his mind could catch up. that before he really knew what he was doing, he was already at your side.
“this… isn’t how things are supposed to go —” you cough, feeling the pain ricochet through your whole body from the base of your spine, the side of your waist wrapped in layers and layers of bandages.
“yeah, i know,” he says, one leg propped on the other, his hair twisted in a hasty braid, tossed over his far shoulder. he’s cleaning a gun — one of his favorites, an old smith and wesson 29 — wiping down the sides and the handle with a meticulousness that people would never usually associate him with.
“daddy always said —”
“— that if you needed more than six shots to kill someone… you’d probably end up dead first,” leona finishes, a smirk quirking his lips as his hands pause over the glinting metallic barrel. “i remember… he taught me too.”
you sigh and lay back on the pristine white sheets, staring up at the hospital’s linoleum ceiling.
“do you miss him?” you ask, not really looking at him.
“what kinda question is that?” he asks, and his voice is a low, seismic rumble, almost too quiet to hear.
“it… you should’ve… i mean —” your words catch in your throat and your hand shoots up to cover your mouth, almost dislodging the iv hooked up to the back. leona tuts before gently tugging your hand back down.
“i should’ve saved him? bullshit — he’d kill me himself if he got outta there and you didn’t.”
“but —”
“shh… don’t think about that… you need to rest.”
you’re vaguely aware of the buzzing warmth spreading through your limbs from your right arm before your eyes fall shut and your breathing evens out once more.
by the door, ruggie cocks his head.
“when’re you gonna tell her, boss?”
leona slates him a dark look, “when she’s ready to hear it.”
not where but when.
“mr. kingscholar, back again today?”
“yes, room —”
“i know the one, sir. uhm… it’s just —”
the nurse purses her lips, her eyes flickering from leona’s deadpan face to the room down the hall, the lights always kept low, the blinds always drawn.
“just say it already.”
the nurse jumps at leona’s voice, but she swallows and nods.
“it’s almost been… a whole year now… don’t you think we should move her to the longterm ward? the rooms are bigger up there — and there’s more natural light — i’m sure she would —”
“no. that one’s fine. and… she can’t be moved.”
he doesn’t look up as the nurse nods tersely, watching as he makes his way to the end of the hallway, the last door on the right. he takes a breath as he stands in the doorway, his eyes catching on your sleeping form.
he pulls a revolver from his pocket, drops into the seat next to you, turns down the dial for your sleeping drugs, and slowly starts to clean.
when you wake up this time, your eyes are a little bit clearer, but your gaze is still unfocused when they land on him.
“l-leona? wh-what happened?”
“you were shot,” he says, matter of fact as he turns his eyes back to his gun.
“yeah… i feel that. but… where… when…” you frown, trying to feel along the side of your body where the bandages are. they feel stiff, and somehow, the pain is too far away. leona tuts as he tugs your hand away.
“don’t mess with your bandages — you’ll never heal properly that way.”
you purse your lips as your hand goes slack in his.
“you got… new gloves.”
“huh? yeah — course i did. i couldn’t keep my old ones.”
you nod, letting your head fall back onto the pillows, staring up at the barren landscape of the hospital room ceiling.
“leona…?”
“hm?”
“i… i want to go home.”
leona goes still, his whole body feeling like a wound spring, his stomach clenching inside him as he stares at the gun in his hands. he has to curl his fingers into his palm to stop himself from shaking.
“ye-yeah. we’ll get you home. i promise.”
“when?” you ask, turning towards him, your eyes wide and hopeful.
he casts you a smile, and somehow, even after all this, it’s the bravest thing he’s ever had to do.
“soon.”
time warp.
“you can’t keep doing this.”
“the fuck i can’t.”
“boss — it’s not fair —”
“don’t talk to me about fair —”
ruggie winces as leona’s fist smacks into the punching bag, nearly knocking it completely sideways as he lets out a frustrated snarl, ripping off his boxing gloves.
ruggie takes a deep breath, “it’s been almost two years. the hospital bills alone are getting insane —”
“so what? it’s not like we’re strapped for cash —”
“but how’s this doing either of you any good? i mean —”
“oh, you think i want this? you think i enjoy this fifty first dates shit? this… this — weird, time-warp where every time i go to see her i’ve gotta pretend that — that everything’s just happened? that i’m not the reason she’s in that bed to begin with?!”
leona’s chest is heaving by the time he finishes, his face pushed up against ruggie’s almost nose to nose. and still, ruggie steels himself to hold his ground.
“you’re not the real reason she’s in that bed.”
“i was the one who shot her!”
“you were the one who saved her.”
leona shakes his head, sinking his now-bare fist into the punching bag once more. ruggie chews on his bottom lip, resisting the urge to turn tail and run. but he’s had enough running for a lifetime — this at least, is something he needs to do.
“she — she deserves to know,” he says.
but leona only swallows and shakes his head.
“i… i don’t know how to tell her.” and it’s the first time that he’s admitted it to himself, out loud at least. and even the words are crippling — the breath seeps from him as he sinks down against the wall, letting his head thunk back, his hair falling loose from it’s haphazard ponytail.
“well…” ruggie says, joining him on the ground, casting his eyes up as well, a light grin pulling at his lips, “you start with one word, and then the next… and then sometime after that, it should get easier.”
and try as he might, leona can’t help the laugh that stumbles up and out of his throat — torn from him almost like ripping off a scab, leaving him feeling red and raw and restless. he shakes his head, letting his shoulder bump against ruggie’s.
“you’re a shit best friend.”
ruggie smiles, “and you’re a shit boss. but hey — we can’t have everything, can we?”
the first time.
and the next time he goes to see you, he tells himself that it’s the last time he’ll do this. but when he walks into your room, it’s to find you already awake, staring up at the ceiling. when he breaches the threshold of the room, your eyes slide over to settle on him, and a faint smile graces your lips.
“hey you.”
leona blinks.
“uh — h-hey… did the sleep drugs wear off?” he can feel his heartbeat thrumming a too-quick baseline at the back of his throat and he wonders if one of the nurses had screwed up your daily doses of anesthesia.
“they must’ve… what time is it?” you look around for a clock in the room. there isn’t one but leona looks around with you.
“not that late,” he says, dropping into the chair next to your bed, “are you… hungry?”
“starved,” you say, laughing as you try to sit up and he reaches out to wrap an arm around your shoulders. you’d never been fragile, not even when you were a tiny little girl, but just now beneath his hands, he laments at how breakable you seem.
“i dunno if you’d like any of the hospital food but… i could try paging for one of the nurses.”
“no, it’s okay. the only good stuff at a hospital is the jello anyway.”
leona laughs, nodding as he props you up on a pile of pillows, sitting back and staring at you in mixed awe and trepidation. it’s the most he’s heard you say in… god — years? years. and he can’t help marveling at the sound of your voice, just as sure and strong as it’s always been. he used to jam a finger in his ears and yell that you were too loud but now, he thinks he’d like nothing more than to fall asleep to it, just to hear it and hear it and keep on hearing it.
“then… how about we get outta here later and i take you to a proper dinner?”
your smile is sweet and just on the other side of teasing.
“leona kingscholar. are you asking me on a date?”
he sighs, shaking his head, pressing his thumb and forefinger to the top of his nosebridge as he pinches.
“yeah — sure, if that’s what you want to think.”
you regard him for a moment before you drop your gaze to the back of your hand, the iv needle still taped firmly in place.
“i’m… not quite sure what to think… i mean — what’s a girl supposed to think of a guy who’s been lying to her for the past two years?”
leona feels his whole body go cold, but you’re still smiling as you look at him, your hands folded neatly in your lap. so, he forces himself to move, to lean forward and reach for your hands, and when you don’t stop him, he doesn’t question why your touch feels a little bit like salvation. why you’ve always kind of felt like that to him.
“i — i’m sorry.”
“i know… i know you are,” you reach up to tug at the ends of his hair, “it’s gotten way longer y’know… it’s one of the things that gave it away.”
he laughs, the sound both helpless and mercifully light as it spills from him.
“shit… i should’ve known it’d be the hair. you always were so damn obsessed with it.”
and when he looks up, it’s to find your cheeks tinted with a color he hasn’t seen in two long years and it takes everything inside him not to reach out and press his palm to it, to reach out and catch it, to save it and cup it close to his chest like a firefly’s dying light.
“can you blame me? you’ve got gorgeous hair,” you say, even now running your fingers through it and he lets himself sink to the sanctity of your touch.
“so… i guess i owe you an explanation,” he says, finally looking up as your hand drops and he bites down the urge to grab it and press it back to the side of his face, to kiss at the patch just inside your wrist.
“yes, that’d be nice,” you say, your voice as casual as it is light, and he knows, even before he starts speaking that he is forgiven, and it’s all he could’ve ever, ever hoped and prayed for.
you, alive; him, forgiven.
and, given those circumstances, he thinks that he really has no other reason to keep on deflecting anyways. so, leona takes a deep breath and tries to remember ruggie’s words — one word, and then the next —
“so two years ago… your dad came to tell me that there was going to be a coup…”
