Bob Roth, music producer. Married to Anarka.

Anarka Couffaine-Roth, Bob's "wife". She has issues with her husband (Not good relationship).

Xavier-Yves Roth (X.Y.), essayist. He abandoned his musician's career for becoming novelist/writer. He rejects his father.

Jagged Stone, classic music player/pianist (instead of rock'n'roll). He's afraid of alligators.

Alim Kubdel, director of the Musée du Louvre.

Tom & Sabine, bakers and Marinette's parents. They died in the arson of the Bakery when (Opposite) Marinette was 10-11.

Rolland Dupain, Marinette's grandfather. He's in good terms with young people ans kids.

André Bourgeois Anaximandre (spoiler from season 5), film director. He has never run for the mayoral election. He's hypocrite and arrogant (He fires Thomas You-Know-Who from the staff).

Clara Nightingale, pop singer. She's arrogant and annoying (similar persona to Canon Chloé).

Harry Clown, comedian and actor. He's known for playing dramatical movies, dramas and B-movies (like Captain Frite).

Wayhem, casual boy. He doesn't like celebrities (especially Adrien). He's an activist on Justice, Human rights and Climate. He's humanitarian.

Domino Brothers, Colt's twin bodyguards (based on bodyguards from Ladybug PV)

M.D.C., class representative from Fathom Academy (identity will be revealed soon).

Cash, Colt's intermediary/negociator in business. Mobster too.

Miss Secretary of Fathom Company (OC) (based on Sphinx's secretary from Ladybug PV).

Michael is the eldest child of Ronan and Alyssa Odeja, and the older brother of Noelle and Anais Odeja.

Works as a beautician at Studio de Primevère.

He does nail art for his sisters and their friends free of charge.

Unlike his sister, Noelle, who ABSOLUTELY HATES the color pink, Michael LOVES pink and will wear the pinkest outfits he can find.

Shares Noelle's affinity for music from Evanensce and Jagged Stone (because who doesn't love Jagged Stone?), but listens to mostly pop music genres and songs from musicals.

Not a big fan of rock music with Evanensce and Jagged Stone being the only exceptions.

HATES XY's music! He has absolutely no idea why his little sister loves that soulless garbage so much!

LOVES Clara Nightingale! His favorite song is "Big Bang".

His birth name is Alice Odeja. His father had his name legally changed after he came out.

When Michael was thirteen, he came out to his parents as a boy. Ronan was fully supportive of Michael and did everything he could to support Michael's transition. Alyssa, meanwhile, rejected Michael's gender identity and did everything she could to try to sabotage his transition.

Michael had gender reassignment surgery when he turned eighteen.

After Michael's surgery, his parents got into a massive fight and Alyssa threw Michael out of the house.

Michael struggled with depression during his later teen years and it got worse after his mother kicked him out of the house. He blames himself for his parents always fighting and his father and sister's misery.

Michael also struggled with alcohol and sleeping pill abuse as a coping mechanism.

He was also in an abusive and toxic relationship at the time. His ex-boyfriend convinced him to make some "decisions" that Michael is not proud of and treated him like property instead of a person.

Fortunately, Ronan was still there for him when Michael was at his lowest and got him some help.

Michael is now currently receiving treatment and medication for his depression, has been sober for almost two years, and is in a very healthy relationship with his current boyfriend.

Absolutely.

I also accept “demonization” for like--comedic purposes. For example, if they had Alya be all in on the love square and all no Marinette you’re not allowed to give up on Adrien if it’s Lukanette endgame and Alya’s (and possibly the rest of the girl squad) “demonization” is for the sake of their dramatic reactions to the mere idea that Marinette would be both not into Adrien anymore and also into someone else.

I just think the idea of turning things on its head by making the people around Marinette the subject of jokes instead of it being Marinette herself.

Do you mean it’d be better because love square is endgame so it’d be messy? Because otherwise, not gonna lie, Jagged meddling and being super supportive sounds fun. :P I’m not here for love square meddling but Lukanette meddling is cute because both parties would be mutually aware of it and also be into it.

As for my favorite fic I’ve written? That’s probably too tough to answer, ahaha. For sure, it’s something Lukanette-based, but I know that doesn’t narrow it down much at all. It would also probably be one of my fix-its/canon divergences because I’m crazy for multiverse/alternate timeline stuff (I hate time travel, but I’m all about multiverse, I adore that stuff).

Thank you for the response! Yeah, I didn’t know if it was like Spider-man and Ladybug - which I don’t think is a spite ship but I might be wrong - so I didn’t want to say that it was a spite ship without being sure (and obviously, some shippers of it could be just genuine shippers, who knows).

Thank you for the extra clarification, anon! Yeah, I have that ship blacklisted (so I don’t see it around) but not really out of hatred for it; I tend to blacklist names/people/ships that I’m either indifferent to or don’t like (I immediately blacklist people who write angst, people who cross tag, and people who do onesided-Lukanette and don’t tag it that, even if it’s just one offense; I don’t play games, lol, if anyone does something I don’t like, I filter it out because I filter everything).

When The World Knows (Pt 1)

pt 2

It's been a while since Marinette has had time to herself. Thankfully, this isn't due to her responsibilities as Ladybug.

In fact, Hawkmoth seemed to be losing whatever motivation he once had for terrorizing Paris, and akumas were becoming scarce. This could have also meant that he was planning something big, but if Marinette was being 100% honest with you, Hawkmoth was becoming the least of her concerns.

Was her growing fame something she should be concerned about? She couldn’t tell you.

It all started on accident, if you were to ask Marinette. She had just went to visit her uncle Jagged while he was making music for an upcoming show that was being produced. After spending some time with him, he eventually introduced her to Hugo Morris, the director of "Autodale; a noir-esque dystopian show that is ‘the next being thing’”.

Hugo had apparently aided in the release of multiple blockbuster and popular shows. Marinette had no doubt that this one would be well received by the public, just by seeing the detailed sets being created all around her.

Almost jokingly, Jagged had encouraged Marinette to audition for the lead role as Aubrey; the Exceptional Girl. After all; Marinette matched the director's description of her very well, apparently.

She was given the script, and she auditioned. She didn't expect to get the role.

And somehow - miraculously - she did. Two days after her audition, she received a callback.

Marinette, after receiving the email, promptly had a seizure. She didn't think she was that good. But apparently, the producer saw something in her.

When she came in the week after to meet the rest of the cast, Marinette could only think about how big the production was, or worry if whether or not she was gonna screw something up with her world renowned clumsiness. She was Marinette Dupain-Cheng after all.

Speaking of her being her, the thought of being on the big screen made her head spin. In the past, she always thought that if she were to ever work in a film production, she would have been on the design team. Designing clothes was her dream after all.

But she guessed the saying was true: "If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans." She was brought back in, she met the rest of the cast, and they were given scripts to read over and have decently memorized by the end of the month.

To only add to the workload, Marinette was still a school student. She hadn't even told her classmates about this.

… Her classmates, the people who didn't even bother to question if Lila was telling the truth; who didn't even care if Marinette's feelings were hurt; the people who didn't even hesitate to isolate her and bully her 'for Lila's sake', even after all she had done for them. And Adrien, who knew what they were doing to her, but chose to keep him mouth shut.

It was safe to say, that after all they'd done, they were merely classmates. Forced acquaintances, if you will.

After a few seconds of thought, Marinette decided not to tell them. She didn't want them to ruin this for her.

She'd have to tell Principal Damocles and Mrs. Bustier, however. If this production was as big as the cast was saying it was, she'd clearly be missing a lot of class.

And, after months of working with fellow actors, memorizing scripts, helping make props, doing schoolwork online, and keeping her nosy classmates from finding out, she could safely say that was the case.

Speaking of classmates.

When she was needed for the production of "Autodale" , Marinette rarely ever saw them. Being the lead role in a long production show would mess up your schedule one way or another. When she did go into that class, it was filled with people constantly going up to her new, lonely seat in the back and asking were she had been.

Instead of answering them, she simply shrugged and told them it wasn't their business. This got on their nerves to no end. At one point, Lila was spreading rumors and lies about how she saw Marinette hanging out with some older men (Marinette had to practically nail herself to the seat as she heard Lila "whisper" it to her loyal followers).

But Mrs. Bustier quickly shot that down and told the class that she knew where she "disappeared to", that it was a safe environment, and that per request of Marinette and her parents, the class wasn't allowed to know. Mrs. Bustier then scolded Lila about telling people things that could lead to trouble, with no proof anyway.

Lila then recovered by spilling crocodile tears and saying that she was only trying to help her dear friend Mari.

Well, at least Ms. Bustier wasn’t a wallflower anymore.

It was then classmates started to question Lila, not completely doubting her, though. Which made Marinette want to pull her hair out.

Marinette didn't end up doing that. After all, she had something to look forward too!

A sneak peek of Autodale was being broadcasted during an award show after school. Marinette couldn't wait! Marinette and the rest of the cast had gotten to see it early, and they were impressed with the craftsmanship.

The next day, Autodale was all anyone would talk about at school.

And of course, Lila had to be apart of it.

"It took them a long time to make the animation that phenomenal. The team poured their hearts and souls into this project. Oh, Hugo is such a good director. He's really nice in real life, too! But, I think that may just be because he has a huge crush on me.

“Oh! yeah, I know the secret main actress. She's just secretive and only wants to reveal herself to the public after the episodes are released on Netflix. We're basically besties- sorry Alya! Aww! Of course Alya, I can try to get you an interview with her after the show is released. She might be busy, being the lead role in an anticipated TV and all, but I'll try my best! No problem!"

Oh the irony. She would've laughed.

But she was focused with what she said prior to claiming their supposed "friendship".

Did Lila know that Morris was a forty year old man and that she had just basically accused him of being a pedophile. That detail probably didn't matter to her. Lila probably would have said it anyway.

Marinette clenched her fists. Lila could spread all of the lies she wanted (she decided it wasn't worth it after seeing how gullible and unyielding her classmates were), but the fact that she was basically claiming how one of her father figures, with a wife whom he was deeply in love with, was a cheating, flirty pedophile made her blood boil.

It must've shown on her face. In a split second, Lila faces her, hiding a small smirk, then loudly proclaimed to her her:

"Aww! There's no need to be jealous Marinette! I might be able to get her to meet you! But, from what I've told her about you, I don't think she'll want to." Lila shook her head, as if she was pitying her. The class threw sneers her way.

Adrien winced, but, once again, did nothing, then looked away.

Marinette took a deep breath.

"No, no. That's fine," she smiled.

Then, with a stroke of luck, she was saved by the bell.

Thank the Gods for lunch period, she thought.

She headed to the locker room. Once they were alone, Tikki emerged from her hiding spot.

"Are you okay?" Tikki frowned.

"Yeah, I'll be fine," Marinette insisted. "I just feel like talking to Carlos."

Carlos was one of the many actors and actresses she met on the set. Carlos played Macro, Aubrey's main love interest. He was funny, understanding, and would listen to her rants of frustration. All in all, they had a great relationship with each other.

Not a romantic one, mind you.

Carlos was gay.

She dialed his number, and he almost immediately responded. She put him on speaker.

"Hey Marshmallow!" Carlos exclaimed

"Hello, rainbow fish."

"Let me guess. Lila?" he questioned.

She sighed, "Yeah. You know me too well."

"So, what she do this time?"

"She essentially called Hugo a pedophile."

"...What?" He practically hissed.

"Yep. Said she knew the old man and claimed he had a crush on her."

"That lying two-faced fox." he sneered.

"She also said she knew the secret lead, that they were practically besties, and then straight up looked at me and proclaimed to everyone that the lead didn't like me."

“Wow. And they actually believed her?

"They always have been. And Adrien did nothing, again." Tikki handed her one of her cookies. She was missing lunch time.

"Seriously, that Agreste boy needs to grow a pair! I'm starting to think he just doesn't care."

Marinette said nothing. She could practically hear him rubbing his temples.

"*sigh* Don't worry Marinette. With the pilot episode being released next Tuesday, they'll learn the truth and regret treating you like trash. Everyone will finally know that Lila has been spewing bullshit since she arrived."

"I really hope so. I'm not sure how long I can take this."

"Girl, I'm telling you! Transfer schools! It's obvious that they're the type to suck up to influential people. Once they find out you're the secret lead, and MDC, they're gonna clam up to you so fast for clout it's not even funny."

THAT was another thing she hardly told anyone. A couple of weeks ago, she opened a commission website called MDCDesigns.

To help her out - and because they believed her clothes were to die for - , Jagged Stone and Clara Nightingale began to wear her designs more often. It wasn't long until the Style Queen herself read a review, and for the first time in a long time, she wasn't tearing a brand to shreds.

In fact, she actually seemed to like her designs.

"They have potential, I'll admit. Certainly about average. Marvelous designs. " Style Queen said in her review. "If they keep this up, they'll certainly have a spot in the industry." She turned to the cameras. "Also, if you're watching this MDC, know that if we ever meet, I'd like a cream colored faux fur scarf."

Her website practically crashed due to the insane amount of commissions she had received that night. Ever since then, people have been dying to know who this mysterious designer was. She wondered if opening the shop was a good decision: not because of her career, mind you, but her health.

Regardless, she was planning to reveal herself after the pilot episode was aired on HBO (not Netflix Lila. If your gonna lie about something, at least research it beforehand)in an interview -with proof, as many people have claimed to be MDC since then.

She sat there in thought, when she was done thinking she responded.

"That... that sounds like a good idea. Well, the Earth doesn't revolve around me! How is your trip going yo-"

Suddenly, she heard footsteps and a door being slammed closed.

She froze.

"What was that??!"

She’d had Carlos on speaker the entire time.

Someone had been watching her.

And the person must've heard everything they said.

Jasonette July Day 18: Design

Written by: The Maribat Pit @jasonette-july-event Prompt: Design Rated: G Jason was sitting calmly at the dining table at his apartment, with Tikki and Plagg on either side. All of them were having breakfast, Jason had toast while Tikki and Plagg had a cookie and cheese respectively. As the group were having breakfast on a fine day, Marinette meanwhile was in absolute tatters.

She ran back and forth across their apartment, picking up sketches, grabbing fabric, stuffing completed articles of clothing into a suitcase. In other words, a complete and utter mess.

“You do know the Gotham Fashion Expo starts this afternoon right? You have a few more hours.” Jason said calmly as he munched on his toast.

Marinette ran towards him, holding on to her sketchbook with a few pages threatening to fall out. “This is THE Gotham Fashion Expo, some of the world’s greatest fashion designers will be there. I need everything to be perfect.” She then zoomed off to continue her scatterbrained preparations.

“Sheesh, you’d put Flash to shame.” Jason commented. “So are any big name designers attending?” he asked Marinette.

Marinette returned, this time carrying a bolt of cloth. “Mari McCabe is going to be there,” she told him “The Mari McCabe!’ She huffed and ran away again.

Jason stopped mid bite, he recognised that name. Who knew Vixen would be coming to Gotham to attend a fashion expo? A sly smile crept onto his face as he took out his phone. Even if he had a rocky relationship with Vixen, he was willing to pull some strings to surprise his little Pixie.

Marinette was just about finished with her preparations before looking at her watch, she went pale. “Mon dieu, I have to be at the Gotham Convention Hall in an hour.” She sped past Jason and the Kwami carrying a few bags with her to hail a taxi. Jason smirked, as he looked back at his phone.

At the Gotham Convention Hall, Marinette had set up her own stall, with a hand embroidered sign saying “MDC” on it. She had displayed several articles of clothing and accessories on one side. On the other she had displayed her designs, pages of her sketchbook stuck on a corkboard.

She was able to get the attention of a few exhibition goers, a couple of them actually asked for her card! Unexpectedly she saw Tim there, he actually placed an order for a new suit. That was a win, though he wondered aloud why someone who designed for Jagged Stone was given such a small booth. Tim walked off mumbling at how she was too humble for her own good. Marinette appreciated the thought, maybe next year she’ll have a bigger booth. Other than that, it was a pretty slow day.

She slowly slumped on her stall, grew bored and started playing on her phone. She tried messaging Jason, however he was unresponsive. “Maybe he’s busy,” she thought to herself.

A voice brought her out of her boredom. “So you’re the famous MDC?”

Marinette looked up to the source of the voice to see Mari McCabe standing right in front of her, in a magnificent red dress. Marinette stuttered “H-h-hi I’m Marinette.” To her surprise she did not notice that behind Mari was none other than Bruce Wayne and Jason, both in their finest suits. Bruce gave Marinette a gentle smile while Jason had a devilish grin.

“These dresses look amazing Marinette.” she said as she looked through the various designs she had on display. Her past designs for Clara Nightingale caught her eye, largely because of the various bright and bold colours she used. “Here’s my card, it would be great if you could be one of my designers.” Spoke Mari, giving her card to a stunned Marinette.

Mari turned around, her face instantly soured as she looked back at Jason. “I’ve got my eye on you, if you hurt her I will tear you to shreds myself.”, she hissed.

Jason gave her a scout salute and a smile, “Wouldn’t dream of it.”

Bruce now stepped in between the two, “Now Ms. McCabe, why don't we continue browsing the rest of the show?” Bruce offered his arm, to which Mari took and the two walked away.

Jason stayed behind and leaned over to Marinette’s stall. Marinette still remained frozen in shock, staring at the business card she had just received with her hands shaking. He tried waving his hands in front of her, but there was no response.

Summary: Bruce Wayne is determined to get his daughter to safety and aid (read: take over for) the Parisian heroes in capturing their supervillains of over six years. Unfortunately, these two goals are in direct conflict. (all of biodad bruce things can be read as stand alones but I do post in chronological order)

Let it be said that Bruce Wayne is a persistent man.

When he wants something, he does not stop on the first or second failed attempt. It doesn’t matter if the world believes something to be impossible. It doesn’t matter if he fails spectacularly to achieve his goal multiple times, in fashions that would likely result in any man of lesser wealth becoming the laughing stock of the global community for months. In order for him to cease his pursuit, he must come to the realization that whatever he’s pursuing is not worth the effort. This is a very rare occasion. Most times when Bruce comes to this conclusion, his decision can be traced back to the trauma of his parents death and the subsequent consequences of his vigilante life style (read: not pursuing Jason’s death, letting Barbara get shot.)

Thus, when Marinette turns down his offer of a safer life, he will not take her rejection at face value. A lesser man might. But Bruce is not any such thing.

Anything that Marinette is involved in-- and he finds that she does a lot-- all oh-so-coincidentally happen to be things that Wayne Enterprises invests in as well. He marks down each and every charity event and gala that she is scheduled to attend and makes an appearance there as well. When he finds that she supports all of her collége friends in their pursuits, he attends too.

Somehow, she manages to skillfully evade being drawn into any long conversation with him and always ensures that there’s a third person involved when he even says hello. If Bruce weren’t trying so hard to have a talk with her, he’d say that her ability to do so was really quite impressive and spoke to the reach of her network. But again, Bruce is trying to convince his daughter that he’s not safe in Paris by herself when the League most likely has a bounty on her head. If Talia finds out that he had a daughter not borne by her-- she’s certainly changed in recent years, becoming more volatile and much less like the woman he fell in love with all those years ago.

He half believes that with Marinette’s wit, intellect, and escape abilities, she may even be able to hold her own against the League. Unfortunate that the League has weapons training and she does not.

“Marinette,” Bruce approaches her at a Bourgeois evening party. She has friends in high places, that’s for certain. Chloe Bourgeois works at her company in the public relations department as does Adrien Agreste, which definitely turned a lot of heads in the fashion industry as nobody expected the boy to work for anybody but his father, nor did they expect him to stop his modelling career in the prime of his life. For modelling works, she turns to Juleka Couffaine and occasionally Olympic hopefuls Kagami Tsurugi, Alix Kubdel, Ondine and Kim Le Chien. Thanks to her connections to Rose Lavillant, she’s produced an entire line of scents that go with MDC’s evening wear. MDC is extensively covered by Aurore Boreale, one of the youngest talk show hosts in the industry, Alya Cesaire, a young journalist who’s won international acclaim with her writing, and Nadja Chamack, a Senior Executive producer of TVi. Though Bruce is rather impartial to the music industry, she’s well known for working with international singers Jagged Stone, Clara Nightingale, and Luka Couffaine as well as an up and coming EDM artist named Nino Lahiffe. In the film sector, she works closely with Tom Astruc and Graham Industries, with Adrien’s cousin, Felix.

As the saying goes, Who you know is everything.

Marinette smiles, teeth bared. Even the way she stands is sharp.

It’s difficult reconciling the girl in front of him with the pictures he saw while doing background checks on her, or even the girl he saw at the bar just three nights ago. At least, it’s difficult for Bruce to reconcile her when she’s around him; Marinette seems to be very much the same girl around her friends, which is almost just as frightening. When she’s with Adrien or Alya of Kagami, it’s as if her parent’s death didn’t even happen. All smiles and sunshine and good will. She still attends all of the charity events she signed up for, has increased the amount of hours she spends volunteering at homeless shelters and akuma shelters-- and Bruce has no clue in hell how Paris’ supervillain situation has gone unchecked for so long, but he already has several agents tracking down Hawkmoth and the Miraculous team to no avail-- and goes to work on a normal schedule. Since Tom and Sabine’s death, she’s taken no time off.

In the presence of Bruce Wayne, however, there’s a great shift in her demeanor. There is nothing warm about her, and despite the fact that Marinette is his daughter and that she’s more than a full foot shorter than him, he finds himself wary of her. That says something, considering the types of people he faces down as Batman near daily.

For the first time, she allows him to approach without dodging him.

“M. Wayne.” Marinette begins to meander to a less public place, all while maintaining a pretty media smile and waving to acquaintances as she passes them. The moment the door closes behind him, a flip is switched.

“Leave me alone,” she growls. “I don’t want or need your protection.”

“Your parents were murdered.”

“You don’t think I know that? I was the one who found their corpses.”

“They’ll come after you, next.” The League of Assassins never leaves their jobs half done. Marinette is more of an achilles heel than Tom and Sabine were-- despite not being in her life, he cares for her. He can’t deny that if she were murdered, he’d probably get caught up in a fit of rage. The Lazarus Pits have not been good for his mental state over the years.

Marinette crosses her arms, sleeves fluttering around her. “You think you know who did it.”

“I don’t think I know; I’m sure who did it.”

“No,” Marinette says in a strangely detached tone. “You think you know who did it. You don’t actually know, do you, Dark Knight?”

Bruce’s stomach fills with dread. Something about her statement makes him feel nauseous. Queasy, even. “I do. The League of Assassins--”

“You think everything revolves around you, don’t you? Bruce Wayne and Batman are not the only ones with enemies.”

“You’re suggesting that you have enemies who would be willing to kill your parents?” Bruce isn’t sure how to take this. Marinette does have a fairly large following, runs in the most powerful and influential Parisian circles, and has money to spare. But as far as his research told him, she didn’t do anything to egregiously offend anybody, besides maybe one Lila Rossi and Chloe Bourgeois, though the latter of the two rectified their relationship eventually.

“I don’t,” Marinette denies. “But Ladybug does.”

“The superhero.” Is his age finally catching up to him?

“The superhero,” Marinette agrees, looking at Bruce contemplatively.

“Ladybug and I-- we’re close,” Marinette settles on. “Close enough for our bakery to become a safe house of sorts for the Miraculous team. Hawkmoth--no, Pavona. She either acted out of anger for her past with me or just wanted to strike a blow at the Miraculous team.”

Bruce feels a migraine coming on. It’s on days like this when he wishes he were a drinking sort of man. “Why would Pavona be upset with you?”

Marinette laughs, humorlessly. “World’s greatest detective, huh? Maybe you’ll figure it out eventually.”

He gets the feeling that their conversation is quickly coming to a close, and figures that whatever issue Marinette and Pavona have is something he can decipher later, “It doesn’t seem like Pavona has done much with this information. The Miraculous Team seems to be in high spirits, and there haven’t been any akumatizations in the past two weeks.”

Another dry laugh. “Wrong move at the wrong time. And besides Ladybug and you, nobody else knows.”

Marinette pushes past him, back to the door, back to the party. She pauses at the door. “I’ll put the two of you in contact. Until then, keep a lid on you and your operative’s emotions. I’m sure trained agents like yourselves can restrain yourself from feeling anger or sorrow for a while.”

Bruce is left with two horrifying realizations: Marinette is in a situation where she’s in over her head, and Sabine and Tom’s deaths have not been publicized.

Batman and Bruce have never liked magic or metas, and Ladybug seems to be both. It doesn’t help that she’s so high strung and seems to be inexplicably angry at him from the moment that he steps foot at their prearranged meetup.

“I sent you the ground rules if you want to operate in Paris. Forward it to your operatives. Follow the rules or leave.”

“I’m here to take down Hawkmoth,” Batman says with a bone-weary tiredness.

Ladybug crosses her arms in a fashion that’s achingly familiar. “I know that. That’s why I’m giving you and your people the ground rules and a chance. Otherwise, you wouldn’t be allowed here.”

“Ladybug, you and your team have failed to catch Hawkmoth for six years now.”

“You and your team have been fighting the same set of villains for over thirty years. I wonder which one of us is really worse off.”

Batman grimaces.

The heroine looks out at the night sky and sighs. “Look, this is a very stressful situation. Pavona acted out in one of the worst ways possible, and even though she and Hawkmoth seem to be MIA, it’s still not ideal.”

He remembers that Marinette said Ladybug and her parents were close. Batman stumbles over his words. He’s never been the best at comforting people, and healthy coping mechanisms simply don’t run in the family. There’s definitely a reason why he and all of his children take to vigilantism so well. “Tom and Sabine-- they were great people.”

Ladybug stills.

Batman doesn’t know how old she is, or how old any of the Miraculous team is, besides from Chloe Bourgeois, who used to be Queen Bee. Something in the way her shoulders hunch, how her jaw trembles, and eyes water makes Batman feel like she’s just a child. But she can’t be. Not if she’s been protecting a city for six years. If he had to guess her age, he’d put her in her mid to late twenties, maybe even early thirties.

“They were the most loving people I’ve ever known,” Ladybug says. “It was a privilege to know them.”

He’s not sure who made the decision to not release Tom and Sabine’s death to the public, but Batman recognizes it as a tactical decision. It only took a short amount of time to hack into security cameras near Marinette’s residence and filter through the sighting of the Miraculous Team at Tom & Sabine’s Boulangerie, stopping to chat with Marinette or one of her parents, sometimes eating there, sometimes staying the night, using their living room as a gathering point. From there, it’s not difficult to realize that Marinette or Ladybug is keeping this information from the rest of their team in order to ensure that their civilian or superhero identities don’t get compromised by an akuma or a sentimonster.

In comparison to the Scarecrow, who makes his victims fight their worst fears, Batman can’t help but think that turning people into their insecurities and angers is worse. At least with Scarecrow, there’s a chance that people can win against whatever they’re fighting. Once a Parisian is turned into an akuma or sentimonster, they just have to hope that somebody else will come in and save the day. Victimhood with the cruelest twist, similar to when the Joker tried to make Dick into the Joker Jr.

“Pavona. What’s her deal with Marinette?”

Ladybug’s laugh is hollow and familiar. “Didn’t Marinette tell you to figure it out on your own?”

“I need to know,” Batman insists. “I want to protect her. I don’t want her to get hurt like that again.”

“You have noble intentions, Batman,” Ladybug says quietly. “A kind heart. But you are mistaken in thinking that Pavona can hurt Marinette anymore. Even if Pavona tries to, she won’t be able to. Tom and Sabine-- they were the weak link. Everyone else she loves is safe.”

Ladybug pauses, looks sideways at Batman, then stares out at the Parisian skyline again. “Everyone except for you. You’re not safe, here in Paris. You know that, don’t you?”

“She--” his mouth dries. There’s a lot of information to process, but he focuses on one thing. “She loves me?”

He doesn’t think he’s heard those words come out of any of his kid’s mouths. He knows that all of them do love each other in their own messed up ways and knows that his sons and daughters are more likely to show their affection in actions instead of words, but Marinette is a biological child that he’s never interacted with before this month. How can she love him when all he’s done is push her away?

“She loves you.” Ladybug closes her eyes. “But that makes her a fool. She’s clung to the hope that she’d get to know you for years. Look where that’s gotten her. She gets to meet you at the price of her parents' lives. So please, don’t mess this up. The best way to protect her is by making sure that you’re safe. Really, I’d want you to leave Paris and forget about her. She’ll be okay. We’ll keep her safe.”

Batman says nothing for a time. Ladybug is right in thinking that Marinette shouldn’t love him, but she’s not right in her belief that she can protect her. After all, Tom and Sabine are still dead. “But I can make sure no one hurts her. I may not be someone she interacts with normally, but I can’t see her die.”

Ladybug makes a keening sound in the back of her throat. “I know, Batman. We’re not as trained as you and your team. I know you want to keep her safe. That’s why I’m letting you and your team help us. Because we’re just not enough.”

“You’ve done a lot to keep this city safe.” He wants to be mad at her for involving a civilian family, but he can’t find it in him. She seems so young. Does she have parents? Do her parents know that she’s Ladybug?

“But not enough.” She wanders to the edge of the building, yoyo in hand. “When this is all over-- maybe the two of you can spend some time getting to know each other.”

Batman stares at the spotted heroine. “Maybe someday.”

“That’s not very convincing.” Ladybug turns so that he can’t see her face. “Be kind to her. She’s alone.”

“She has you. She has your team.” Neither Bruce nor Batman has been very good at comfort during a time of loss.

Ladybug fiddles with the chain around her neck. Two rings as a pendant. She clenches her fist around them and goes still for a moment. “We’re too similar to comfort each other. And we both agreed that telling the team… it would be disastrous. Tom and Sabine were parents to all of us. Pavona is scheduled to come back soon. If we tell them now, it might end in another mass akumatization. That’s something we have to avoid.”

Pavona is coming back? How did Ladybug even know that she left? How—

Batman stills. The muggy Parisian warmth is only alleviated by a brief breeze that makes Ladybug’s hair ties fly in the wind. Anger wells up in the back of his throat, and he feels the Lazarus in him spike, knows that behind the white film of his cowl, his eyes are turning green. “You know who Pavona is. Why hasn’t she been brought in yet? Why—”

Ladybug could have prevented Tom and Sabine’s death. She could have saved Marinette the loss of her parents.

Marinette could have retained her innocence. Been kept out of the world of superheroes and supervillains, been kept safely on the sidelines if only Ladybug weren’t so selfish, wasn’t so foolish to bring in a civilian family with no training and no background.

“Marinette and I have known for a long time,” Ladybug cuts him off, and he’s ready to put his hands to her throat, but no. Justice, not vengeance. He will make sure that Ladybug’s wrongdoings are brought to light. He will right her wrongs. “For four years, it was Hawkmoth and Mayura. Once Pavona showed up, we thought-- we thought that between her and Hawkmoth that she’d be the lesser of the two evils. We had no clue who Hawkmoth was, but we knew that they were working together. Pavona was left free to roam in hope that she’d lead us to Hawkmoth. That we could finally end the fight.”

Ladybug’s back straightens. She turns, and her eyes are all blue steel and pain. It’s then that Batman realizes that Ladybug truly did love Tom and Sabine with her whole heart.

“I see that I was wrong. Hawkmoth kills indiscriminately. But Pavona-- her grudges run deep. Mayura was the kindest of the three. The reason Pavona killed Tom and Sabine was petty.” Ladybug’s voice crumples, as do her legs. She hunches in on herself, hugging her knees. Batman watches on from a distance.

What was it she said? That she and Marinette were too similar to comfort each other? One day, Batman may find himself furious at Ladybug for making the decisions she did. But right now, all he sees is a child.

“I’m sure you’ve looked into Marinette’s past,” Ladybug starts.

Batman makes a noise of affirmation, but she clearly wasn’t looking for permission to go on. She was trying to collect herself in order to tell a story.

“There was a transfer all the way back in collège. She was very popular amongst her classmates. Beautiful, well connected, charismatic. There was no way people wouldn’t love her.”

Ladybug glances back at him. “Come, sit, Monsieur. I do not know you well, but I don’t bite.”

Bruce— Bruce does not want to sit with her. But Batman says that he has to hear her out. To give her a chance, at least. Batman has made mistakes over the course of his career as well, his actions and inactions affecting too many for him to keep track of. He would be a hypocrite if he didn’t let Ladybug speak, even if Sabine and Marinette are two people he never would have dreamed of involving. Still, he keeps one hand firmly on a batarang. The videos shows that not much damage can be done to the superheroes when they’re suited up, save for attacks with magic, but nothing is absolute. There’s always a way to bring an opponent down. “Is it that shocking of a story?”

“No. Not at all. If anything, it’s a typical story of teenage drama, except perhaps a bit more than that. But I need the reassurance that you won’t run off once I finish.” She lets the two rings go, gentle thud of the two rings pressing against each other and her collar bone. The rings seem familiar.

Batman sits, albeit warily and at least five feet away from his companion. Ladybug hasn’t proven untrustworthy so far, but she is still part meta and a magic user, from what he’s gathered. He wouldn’t put it past her or one of her team, particularly the one who creates illusions, to do something. He just doesn’t know what.

“This beautiful, charming classmate easily swayed Marinette’s class to her side.” Ladybug peeks at Batman through her bangs. “Understand that the classmates are children. Children in a class where power means that trouble and responsibility never stick. They learned that taking action meant you would be blamed.”

Batman wonders how Marinette and Ladybug met. Maybe it was through this very class she’s talking about now. If that’s true, it does not bode well for his perception of her.

“Marinette recognized this classmate for what she was. A liar. She promised all sorts of beautiful things-- things that played to their classmate’s biggest dreams. Working with their favorite artist. Meeting olympic athletes and musicians. Trips to impossible places. Perhaps if Marinette wans’t who she was, she would have believed her, too. But this classmate lied about two things Marinette knew were false. She lied about being a hero. She lied about me.”

“How do you and Marinette know each other?” It was incredibly difficult to find the video evidence of the Miraculous team going to Tom & Sabine’s Boulangerie. Batman had to call in a favor from Zatara and avoiding her questions as to why— he’d much preferred it if he were able to go through any normal channel instead.

“We’ve known each other since the beginning.” Ladybug fiddles with her yoyo, refusing to look him in the eyes. “Marinette tried to get her friends to realize the truth. But everybody wanted what she was saying to be real. It’s hard to say otherwise when everything they ever wanted could be found in a single person. And Marinette didn’t pick the smartest ways to try to reveal her lies.

“That beautiful, charming classmate didn’t like Marinette trying to debunk her entire persona. She grew to be very cunning. She hurt Marinette in so many ways. I lost track over how many times Marinette got suspended or temporarily expelled, only for her to be brought back at the behest of the one other person in her class who knew the truth. Her designs were stolen. The boy she loved grew into a shell in order to protect himself. Her friends drifted away-- not that they were cruel or anything, they were taught inaction above all else, to not say a word about whatever happened in class ever since ecole-- but Marinette was really lonely.

“It was sort of a blessing in disguise. During this time, a lot of the Miraculous Team went on a break of sorts, and it was only Chat Noir and I. We had to get stronger and smarter and Marinette and her family provided relief and moral support. If her friends were close to her during that time, things may have ended really badly. Hawkmoth may have caught on to more secret identities than he already knew.”

“Does Marinette know who you and Chat Noir are underneath the mask?” To put the weight of their alter egos on a civilian is cruel. It’s why his own was so closely guarded. He’s not a fan of Marinette knowing his existence as Bruce, let alone Ladybug.

“The more people who know our identities, the greater a chance Hawkmoth has at taking our Miraculous.”

A non answer. Clever wording on Ladybug’s part. Although he can imagine Sabine agreeing to put up a bunch of teenage superheroes in her bakery, he knows that it’s impossible for anything to escape from her eyes for very long. He’d bet anything that she figured out the majority of the team’s identities. And by extension, anything that Sabien finds out, Marinette is bound to find out as well; her past indicates that she has an equal, if not higher level of intelligence and creativity that Sabine had.

Had. They went for so long without patching anything up. Why was he so foolish? So Hard headed? She offered him so many chances to reconnect, to connect with Marinette, to be a second father to her. She didn’t have any romantic feelings for him left, that much he knew, what with how utterly in love she was with Tom, and he was happy for her. Happy that she found somebody more stable than him.

If he and Sabine were closer, could he have prevented their deaths? Would he have been clued into the situation of a magic supervillain in Paris sooner?

He can’t be mad at Ladybug. Not when Batman, a hero with decades of experience on her, failed to step in. Refused to look old problems in the eye. Let loved ones die for his own inability to communicate.

“For a while, Marinette didn’t fight back. She didn’t want the boy she loved, her best friend, to get in any more trouble than he already was, trying to protect her. She laid low. But the classmate was very interested in this boy as well. The classmate tried to break him to get him to love her.”

Ladybug smiles wryly. “You can imagine that was the end of her rope. Marinette thought that the only person the liar was targeting was herself. After three years of bearing the weight, she finally snapped. She started using the resources she had. And the wasn’t any grandiose thing, though in retrospect, perhaps it should have been. She wouldn’t have ended up in prison, no she’s too young, and one of the two main victims was under lock and key, and Marinette was never hurt to the point where the liar would face real consequences for her actions. All that happened was a restraining order and her removal from Marinette’s school.”

“The girl’s name is Lila Rossi. She was already a suspect for working with Hawkmoth at the time by helping him turn people into akumas. Then Mayura stopped showing up and Pavona took her place. Pavona was clearly targeting everything and anything near Marinette. I should have seen the signs, but I had years of experience on her, and the Miraculous Cure--” Ladybug breaks off. “From one point of view, even Hawkmoth is better than her, because at least he didn’t cause any irreversible deaths.”

The Miraculous Cure is cruel. It only reverses the damage done with a Miraculous or while Ladybug is transformed. When Tom and Sabine were murdered, Pavona and the Peacock Miraculous were nowhere in sight.

Batman can’t say whether Pavona is better or worse than Hawkmoth. But Lila Rossi-- he recognizes the name. He knows what she looks like, since her image came up when he was doing a background check on Marinette. It’s quite possible that she has some type of mental disorder. Now is not the time to think about that. Hawkmoth’s identity needs to be revealed, and quickly. “How did you connect the two with the magic protecting your identities?”

“I used a little magic of my own.”

Beneath them, more and more lights begin to flicker out. Even though Paris is nicknamed the City of Lights, due to the extensive drain on energy, shops are required to turn off their exterior lighting after 1AM.

“Please,” Ladybug says. “Please help me find Hawkmoth. Please help me put them in prison. I-- I’ve been fighting for so long, and it was a duty I didn’t even want for the longest time. I just want all of this to be over. I want to be able to scream and cry and mourn without Hawkmoth and Pavona trying to manipulate me. Please.”

Batman has never been one for physical affection, but he pats Ladybug awkwardly on her back. She launches herself into his arms, curling into him and sobs as he awkwardly rubs her back. He keeps his eyes trained at a distance, watching for any akumas or amoks.

“Please,” she warbles, eyes watery. “Be good to Marinette. Be a good father. Be someone for her to lean on.”

His muscles tighten. He’s never claimed to be a good father, let alone a good man. He tries to do right, but Marinette is different from all of the other kids he’s taken in over the years. She’s not from Gotham. She had parents who were kind and stable and normal. He doesn’t think he can be a good father to her.

Somehow, Ladybug guesses exactly what he’s thinking. “You just have to be yourself. It may be stupid and foolish, but she loves you. She really does.”

For a long time, the two of them stay on that roof, Ladybug buried in the crook of Batman’s arm.

WIPWednesday: 6/23/21: the Pick Fic 👀

So back in October, I was doing OC-tober for Dingo, and Day 12 (Drip) was a Lukanette proposal chapter. It was one that I felt got kinda rushed? There was more I wanted to do with it than just the twenty or so minutes I was limiting myself to for those prompts did.

Which is how the Pick Fic was born. It's five chapters, starting with Luka and Marinette meeting at the Music Festival and showing how the Jagged pick (the one he originally gives her, as this was started before Truth and we're completely ignoring S4 for this) follows them through their relationship (culminating in Luka using it to propose). Aaaand I'm working on ch5 now, which I'm hoping to wrap up in the next day or so, which means maaaaybe by Sunday or next Wednesday I'll be ready to start posting? I'm gonna say next week just to be safe. That's my goal, and right now it feels pretty reasonable. Life I will Tyler Slap you if you change this on me.

So here's a little bit from Ch1 of the Pick Fic...

The annual Music Festival in Paris was a pretty big deal, and this year was promising to be bigger than most. All of Paris was going out for it: even big names like Jagged Stone, XY, and Clara Nightingale were putting on shows at venues across the city. Tons of smaller venues were also booked, and even private homes were turning into concert halls for the occasion. The Liberty, home of one Anarka Couffaine, was no exception.

The houseboat was no stranger to music. Anarka had spent quite a few years when she was younger touring and recording, and while she now preferred to spend her days teaching and working odd jobs around the city her music had done well enough for the royalties to keep them afloat, even eighteen years later. The boat was littered with musical instruments, sound equipment, stage gear…among plenty of regular old litter, too, as Anarka preferred the lived-in look. It never surprised anyone when, every year without fail, the Music Festival found the Liberty blaring music from professional-grade speakers towering over the foredeck – when one of its occupants was home to blast said music and not playing one of the numerous gigs around the city instead. Music was in Anarka’s blood, and so it was in her children’s blood, and so it was in their home.

(…it was also in their father’s blood, though they had never known him and all she’d ever said regarding the matter was that he was a useless lagabout from the road. That was fine, and they had never needed him, anyway. Anarka Couffaine was more than enough parent for her bairns.)

This year’s Festival would be special, though. Every year – every Festival – was special, but this year would be even more so. Anarka always found somewhere to help out, even if she wasn’t actually playing. Luka was the same, though for the past six years or so he’d been playing various street corners with his best friend. But this year would be Juleka’s first year actively playing the Festival, and she’d be playing in a band.

A new band. Her band.

Well. Her and her friends. And her stupid brother, because he was actually kind of cool and had agreed to play with them (and he could really shred a guitar, which was an asset in any band). But still her band.

They were all a little excited.

(…everyone except Luka’s best friend, who’d been pouting since the band had first formed shortly after the start of the school year. He’d already found another group to play with, but he was deeply offended that Luka would dare play in a band whose drummer wasn’t him.)

Kitty Section would probably never make any great waves in the music industry, but that wasn’t their point. They were a first band – they were Juleka’s first band – and that was good enough. They were just a group of kids making noise on a boat, and Anarka couldn’t be more proud.

And, truth be told, Luka was kind of excited, too. Kitty Section was good, if a little eclectic, and he liked Juleka’s (and now his) friends. He was proud of the music they were making. They’d been practicing together for a few months now, and the Festival was set to be their big debut. Juleka had even invited her class to check them out, which was awesome. He was so proud of his little sister, and he was so glad to see her finally coming out of her shell. The Festival had to go well, for her. And he knew it would. He firmly believed that.

Kitty Section was good.

They were ready.

The hours leading up to the big show were a flurry of activity, chaotic as anything on the Liberty ever was Ivan showed up early, and Rose had spent the night to help Juleka get an early start on decorating. Luka helped Ivan move some of the heavier equipment and arrange the stage, but then Ivan was leaving to pick up his girlfriend and Juleka’s other friends were starting to arrive, and Luka disappeared below deck to give them their space. Her friend Nino was helping rig up their sound system, and his girlfriend was…intense. She took over the decorating of the ship as soon as she arrived, and Luka had just wanted to get out of her way. More people were set to arrive any moment – Nino’s best friend and Alya’s best friend, too – and it was all getting a little…much. Crowded.

Luka wasn’t nervous about the gig, but he’d always been keenly in tune with the emotions of others. If he was going to play his best, and he refused to play anything less than his best for Juleka, he needed to get away from the buzzing above deck to find his center. They still had a few hours before the show, and someone would get him before the final rehearsal. He had more than enough time to clear his head.

But somewhere amidst the chaos he’d lost track of time. He was on his bed, cross-legged with a spare pick pinched between his fingers, when he sensed her. He’d heard the unfamiliar footsteps approaching and the flailing when she’d noticed him, and he took an extra moment to just…observe. Shaky breathing joined a racing, unsettled heart, nerves and something deeper – more pained. Something…

…and then he smiled, and he opened his eyes, and he was lost.

Okay!! So the title of this AU is from The Archer by Taylor Swift. It contains Daminette, but the beginning starts off more sibling Jasonette-centered.

I’m splitting this into multiple parts; this one will just set the scene for the next parts and discuss the background before the plot actually starts.

Jason and Marinette:

Marinette met Jason when she was 13

He was introduced as Gina’s motorcycling buddy

They clicked right away and decided to stay in contact

Jason knew when she became Ladybug, and revealed himself as Red Hood

Being Gotham, he couldn’t do much, but he discreetly trained her through video calls and such

This pretty much sums up their relationship

Heroes and Villains:

Ladybug and Chat Noir defeated Hawkmoth a month before her 16th birthday

Her class had long turned on her thanks to Lila, but on the bright side, the liar had been exposed as an accomplice of Hawkmoth and was in jail alongside Gabriel and Nathalie

Her school and teachers were under investigation for enabling Lila’s lies and bullying as well as sheer incompetence

Just when she thought Chat Noir was done with flirting due to the lull in puns and confessions after the Heart Hunter akuma, it came back full force one day and only seemed to get worse despite her protests

Adrien revealed himself to the authorities as Chat Noir to prove his innocence

He confessed his love to Ladybug, saying that since Hawkmoth was gone they could finally be together

If the reveal had happened last year, maybe she would have agreed

But Jason had taught her better; that Chat’s behavior was harassment and she couldn’t just brush that aside

She said as much, but he insisted that “We’re meant to be together! You’re the only one who doesn’t see it!”

She was shocked that this was who she was in love with for so long

Marinette wasn’t a consolation prize; she wouldn’t stand for this kind of treatment any longer

She knew he was likely distressed because of his father and told him she would give him one more chance

He could either get help for himself—research harassment, start therapy—or she would take the ring

Her seriousness seemed to sober him, so he reluctantly agreed

Marinette:

Marinette cut her losses with her friends the moment they turned on her

She didn’t blame Adrien for not helping her in fear of upsetting his father, but she was a little disappointed

She was still friends with Luka and Kagami, though

Now that she wasn’t swamped with helping her friends babysit or doing them favors or hanging out with them, she used the time to double down on her fashion design

She started MDC and used her connections with Audrey Bourgeois, Jagged Stone and Clara Nightingale to her advantage and to expand her clientele

She worked with Jason to take down Hawkmoth

Marinette took a month after the villain’s downfall to testify against Lila and make plans

She was itching to go visit Jason but knew she needed to be patient

She had already planned on moving to Gotham once Hawkmoth was defeated, so all she needed was to tie up some loose ends

Nothing really compelled her to stay, and Jason was the only family she really needed

It’s not that her parents were bad per se; just a bit neglectful

They trusted her enough to let her take care of herself and treat her like an adult, but apparently not with the bakery or anything important to them unless it was necessary

They didn’t seem too concerned about the idea her living in an entirely different country on her own; they absently noted that they trusted her

Marinette talked to Jagged about living in Gotham since that was his birth place and managed to get a nice apartment—”For my favorite niece!” he said

Once she finished making arrangements and booking a plane, she called Jason to tell him the news

He had no idea she was planning on moving since she made a point to very carefully keep it a suprise

He cursed up a storm of excitement and started talking about what they could do together

And then he got an idea

“Hey! You know that stupid gala I was telling you about last time? You should come with me and meet my family!”

Her flight was in a week, and the Wayne Gala was in two, so making outfits would be almost impossible

But Marinette was never one for the impossible anyways

Next up: Marinette meets the Batfam at the Wayne Gala!
