irt poverty/homelessness + alcohol use (esp with @butchfeygela‘s tags on my post)- people really underestimate the function that substance use/alcohol use can have for someone who is unhoused. being unhoused is boring, cold, painful, + lonely. substances can allow the 8 hours panhandling to get the $45 you need for a motel to fly by. alcohol reduces your perception of the cold + can knock you out whben you can’t sleep. substances can help you cope with the physical deterioration from malnutrition, constant stress, + sleeping outside. substances can provide social connection with others who you would otherwise not enjoy or help you cope with being alone.

not only that but- many unhoused people are stuck in a seemingly inescapable position. the pathway to financial stability or even housing is difficult or even impossible. in the wake of that hopelessness, the downsides of substance use start to seem insignificant. arrest? you’re getting arrested anyway for sleeping outside, peeing outside, standing in the wrong place, etc. physical danger? you’re already beat the fuck up, anyway, right? loss of relationships? you’ve lost most people already. inability to keep a job? nobody will hire you + you can’t stay employed, anyway, because you have no car + no shower.

perhaps for you or me, the cons of heroin use or binge drinking nightly greatly outweigh the pros. that isn’t the case for everyone. if we are really serious about ending overdose/addiction, we need to start looking at giving people lives worth recovering into instead of shaming them for their own hopelessness.

#i had a long talk with my dad once about how #my brother sank into so much financial despair #that he was never going to be able to find #a livable job or housing (eviction record #plus bad credit plus #arrest record ofc #he was going to be forced into poverty for the rest of his life #the only job prospects he had were menial shit jobs #he once worked at one of those chicken butchering places #it was the only place that paid him a living wage but he got fired for relapsing #his only options were to go to school part time + try to pass with his dyslexia which made him essentially unable to read #then work a horrible shitty job the rest of the time #while paying atlanta's outrageous rent prices #plus who is he gonna room with?? all his friends are opioid users! #while he paid back all the debt he accrued from going to rehab #then MAYBE after like 6 years of school he could get a decent job #but his credit would be in flames for years his eviction record there for years #his arrest record + lack of driver's license limiting his employment.. #sorry but i would have probably given up at that point too #not to mention his interpersonal + familial relationships up in flames + the shame #of the things he did while using hanging over his head #the only family member who didn't think he was an irredeemable fuckup (me) living a thousand miles away + about as broke as him #substance use #harm reduction

what I love about the Ushers is, yes, some of them didn’t deserve it. Leo was just any drug addicted asshole who treats the people around him like shit but he clearly cared about his family even when they hated him and he grew up around drugs and addiction. Tammy was emotionally and verbally cruel to Bill and coerced him into a life he didn’t want but she did love him no matter how hard she tried to hide it and she wanted to be a better person. Lenore was just a girl who hoped for a kinder world for her mother and herself, who did nothing wrong but trust in her grandfather. That’s the point. Some of the children are horrible and violent and unkind and some of them are just people, messy, disturbed people. They deserved a chance just like anyone else. But they don’t get one. When somebody gambles your life before it begins, before you’re even conceived, you lose. When we let the rich and the powerful play God and do awful things, the poison seeps all the way down. Even to the good ones. Even to ones who could have been good. Nobody ever wins.

I wanted to share this. This is my boyfriend, best friend, the love of my life, my world Justice. He’s struggled so much in his childhood and his adult life. He’s been kicked out of his home before, neglected, abused, ignored, treated like garbage and much more… his own parents have called the police on him… put him in jail before… Justice has fought substance abuse, and probably been on every drug known to man….. the picture of him on the left was him before.. 2020.. he was so depressed and the drugs were causing him to lose so much weight, motivation, and spirit in his eyes. He was almost down to 89 lbs……

The picture on the right is Justice now. :) he’s fought so hard, he’s gotten off drugs, he’s fought and fought to say no to addiction now. He’s had withdrawals, and gotten physically sick for days on end . Today he is 205 lbs, muscle, smiling more, laughing everyday, and he is definitely treated like a king!

Sometimes- it’s not about having someone who’s “already self made” sometimes you fall in love with those who need just a little help, a little more love, and more reassurance! Don’t give up on those who may struggle….. Justice went through it and now he’s doing amazing. I’m so proud of him!!!!! I wanted to share his before and after with tumblr!

Justice is currently getting a letter of recommendation written for him to go down south and is waiting to be accepted into the Phoenix House in Tampa! He is someone who has struggled with drug abuse since 2013… this will be his year to finally turn his life around and get his head back on right! He is ready for his journey to get his life together and having a second chance in life! I am so proud of him!!

Did you know it’s not uncommon for rehabbers to be able to handle and even hold a wild opossum? They are so peaceful and docile in nature and are some of the most amazing creatures we have worked with. 

While we are not recommending you attempt to pick up any wild opossum you come across, we would love to spread the true facts about these awesome guys and put a stop to the common misconceptions about them that often result in unnecessary cruelty. Here are just ten amazing facts about opossums you all should know! 

1. They're Not Aggressive Even when confronted with a predator, they will use the infamous "playing possum" technique to appear dead and avoid an actual brawl.They can stay zoned out for hours, emitting a foul odor in order to further keep any bad guys at bay, but they'll never outright attack, even if they're baring their teeth.

2. They Rarely Have Rabies Unlike most other wild animals, possums are nearly completely immune to contracting rabies or passing it along. This is due to their natural body temperature being too low to maintain hosting the virus.

3. They Kill Thousands Of Ticks According to stats reported by the National Wildlife Federation, a single possum can potentially eliminate 4,000 ticks in one week thanks to their extreme self-grooming methods (either crushing or consuming the ticks burrowing in their fur).They also aren't susceptible to Lyme disease and therefore can protect humans from contracting it, as they rid an area of the real pests.

4. They Won't Destroy Your Lawn Or Property Unlike other nocturnal animals creeping around neighborhoods, possums won't destroy your lawn or property. If you happen to see one wander into your garage (a popular spot to see them pop up), and don’t want to share your space, simply leave a door open and remove any food that might have drawn them in. They'll eventually mosey on out without making a fuss. 

5. They're True Survivors They've been around longer than any other mammal. Possums are often called "living fossils" because they've been able to survive on our planet for millions of years — over 70 million, to be exact, which really shows their ability to overcome adversity.

6. They Help With Waste Management They are not picky eaters. If it's edible, they'll eat it. Including commonly dining on animals struck by vehicles on the road (bones and all), which scientists refer to as "carrion."This basically makes them nature's most efficient waste-management team and cleanup crew.

7. They're The Only Marsupials Indigenous To North America You have to admit, it would be a shame if Australia were the only home to marsupials! Plus, it makes possums even more of a unique part of our natural environment. 

8. They Get Rid Of Garden Pests They aren’t picky eaters when it comes to troublesome garden pests like slugs, beetles, and cockroaches, but they will leave the flowers or veggies you’re growing undisturbed. 

9. They May Be The Key To Battling Venomous Snake Bites The venom of rattlesnakes, cottonmouths, and other dangerous slithery snakes that might be hiding in your yard has no effect on possums.Researchers have been looking into whether they can find the toxin-neutralizing strain in their blood, which could potentially be used to treat humans who have been struck by poisonous snakes.

10. They're Actually Quite Smart Possums tested with a higher intelligence than more domestic animals like rabbits, dogs, and cats — particularly when it came to finding good food and remembering exactly where it was to go back for more.”
