Hi, @idreamtofmanderleyagain, I’m your anon (linking here for context). I approached you that way initially bc I didn't think that we had interacted enough times to have me approaching you about this not seem confrontational, but since you’ve been kind enough to put so much serious thought into your answer, I think it would only be fair to respond at all with my face attached. I tried to reblog this in direct response to your own post, but between the two of us, we seem to have hit tumblr’s post length limit. go figure.

Ahead of my response, I have to explain part of my perspective outside just being a fic writer: I’m a grad student in a literature department, still work there currently, and have taught undergrad english during my program, so this issue has already had a massive impact on my field. My own experiences have given me reasons to be wary of LLMs in particular, so that does influence my views to some degree. But your original post was mostly about fandom, so I won’t expand on those unless you’d want me to, for whatever reason.

keeping it to just fandom stuff, even with your research, I hate to say none of my previously voiced concerns are assuaged.

AI users have, knowingly or not, justified the initial theft by corporations to train their products that are potentially going to be made into for-profit models as something unfortunate but ultimately worth overlooking in the long run, and already, I know we’re going to disagree at a fundamental level. You said it yourself above, where you acknowledge this is a factor, but this doesn't give you enough pause to question your own use of these models.

You could stop reading now to save your own time and I would understand, but I still wish to respond to these other points.

While I appreciate your apparent genuine effort to interrogate these systems to the degree of their training and use of this data... you'll have to forgive me if I remain skeptical. I'm not surprised it told you what it told you, and as you yourself pointed out, it could easily be spitting out boiler plate answers programmed by the people in whose interest it would be answering. There is no promise of authenticity, as you noted, and I wouldn't be surprised if the program that generates prose based on user prompts is presenting to you what it thinks you'd want to read. Thanks nonetheless.

The arguments presented here seem to invoke the disabled community multiple times in ways that I’ve seen the larger community disagree with, and while we’re not? a monolith? I think this is something I want to address on from my corner of it. Let’s start with the Amazon/Bezos comparison. You could argue I should only shop locally, sure. But I’m sure you’re aware lots of people (myself included) use Amazon bc for things we absolutely need of limited access to certain supplies in our communities, etc, and that’s not even uncommon among non-disabled people. But the fact remains that LLMs are not like Amazon in the sense they’re a super conglomeration that has made itself almost unavoidable, especially to people who live in more isolated areas. I don’t think your exercises in a character chat bar are exactly comparable to that, primarily because using AI in your creative work is not a necessity; people are only doing so out of curiosity.

That, I think, is primary issue actual artists and writers find uncomfortable: people who don’t have to use this technology that was, again, built to some degree on the exploitation of people who have been developing their skills for whole careers, are taking umbrage against the fact that those same creatives are upset with those that don't think this exploitation is worth curtailing or interrogating their personal use of AI. This is an entirely optional part of your writing. Metaphorically, I would argue that this is not Amazon, this is closer to eating Chik-fil-a - you know something sucks for a particular community, but you still have the option to patronize it yourself if you really wanted to.

If that sounds unfair to you, sure, you can assert your right to use the LLMs. But the rest of us who didn’t consent to having our work scraped, especially in the era of a writer’s strike where AI is specifically an issue, maybe won’t be as receptive to the fact that this is something you’re willing to disregard to some degree for the sake of whatever benefits you see to AI in your work. You might not frame it this way, but this is still what it comes down to. Your experience with this new technology is ultimately outweighing voiced concerns that people, as you pointed out yourself, are going to see their livelihoods impacted. I don’t mean to be blunt, but that is genuinely what I believe is being weighed in this issue.

I also disagree as someone who is neuroatypical that the idea of “hard work” the artists and writers are invoking in their arguments against AI is ableist? Because I know exactly what they’re referring to; I have spent literal years working on my craft. I’ve dedicated a great deal of my education to it. I know you didn’t just start writing yesterday, either, and that this is a process that you find fulfilling in some not-minor sense, hence perhaps your initial desire for AI experimentation. While you seem to read the creatives against AI as invoking an ableist standard of “hard work” as in working towards literal health problems (the recent ComicsBrokeMe discussion on various platforms is timely), no one who’s trying to make a serious living out of their craft in the current economic climate is going to say that what they do isn’t hard work, or that they haven’t put hard work in to work at the level they do. Saying that the idea of hard work is in itself ableist downplays the effort many creatives, disabled and not, actually conscientiously undertake in their creative endeavors. I know we both know disabled creatives can do hard work. AI users trying to frame this idea as ableist are well-meaning, but this argument kind of shoots itself in the foot if you believe that talent in the humanities is learned, and not somehow inborn. People who try to frame AI as something to level the playing field are more or less saying on some level that the efforts to learn art or writing either don’t work, or aren’t worth the time needed to practice.

As said previously, disabled people are not a monolith, and disabled people using AI doesn’t mean other people, also disabled or not, have to find it acceptable. As you’re well aware, there are lots of disabled artists and writers who have established distinguished careers for themselves well before LLM and visual models were ever even a concept. There are many ways we’ve found to participate in these disciplines, which makes me deeply skeptical of anyone trying to claim this is the only way they’re able to create something, especially if they use their disability as a shield to excuse it. Again, this is not a necessity in any artistic endeavor, as there are plenty of us who are disabled who manage to create regularly.

As to AO3, I’ll be honest, I am one of the people calling for AI exclusion, or at least open labeling of such products. The process of generating a fic or even just a summary with an LLM is completely different from actually writing a fic yourself and the level of intention involved, as I’m sure you’re aware. The AI isn’t making creative decisions as much as it is filling out a written parameter based on previous examples it’s been given, no? It's not even something I'd really consider "brainstorming" -- It’s just a series of words the algo has arranged in what it believes to be the “correct” order. The operator can refine their prompt, but we both know that doesn’t engage the same process of planning and executing a story yourself does - even, I’d argue, down to a drabble.

You can argue this differentiation would create a culture of secrecy, but that secrecy only flourishes if people using AI purposefully try to conceal doing so. If AI is something you're going to continue to peruse in your own work, I don't see why other users wouldn't adopt with open identification, both so y'all can find each other and so those of us who would rather not engage with AI can filter appropriately. I don't think generations should be engaged with in same way, because they are in themselves the product of a different kind of effort, which you can argue is fannish/fen, but I will gently disagree.

And, if the results of the generated fics are just as vague, confused, and overly general as you describe in your own personal experience, I see that as a further argument as to why we shouldn’t want them there. If the AIs have stopped training, as you’ve read, they’re certainly not going to get any better. And if the AI is still learning, then that only underscores the original problem in the first place. Even if it’s not scraping AO3 or other sources anymore, people like yourself who are feeding their own fics in will help teach it, which you may not see as a problem. AO3 currently agrees with you, so if you want to post the products of your research, you’re certainly able to. If AO3 doesn’t want to ban AI fics, I don’t think the rest of us are in the wrong to either ask for them to be taggable, or to be filed as a completely separate option from fan fic or fan art. You can call them Fan Generations, even, idk but I do think there should be some delineation between the process that went into these and user-written fiction.

AO3 does have a public source code, IIRC, so if people like yourself wanted to gather and set up a dedicated archive of machine-generated work, I imagine you’d find some takers for volunteering and fundraising - not as many at first as the original, sure, but if this is something that a side of fandom wants it then has potential to grow.

On top of that, people continuing to feed/refine the models will only remove that vagueness/confusion you cite to justify why it’s harmless. We’ve already seen this be true of imaging AI being distinctive from human-created art with the numerous human fingers gradually whittling down, right? If that’s the case, then I don’t see why people who generate their fics wouldn’t want to have them tagged as AI, if it really makes no difference to them.

All of the above, plus citing some artists being incorrect about how AI works or being too mean as an argument towards why people should be able to use AI without pushback from the creatives they stand to impact, has made me think that your problem is less with community fracturing/safety and more an issue with the tone other people take when discussing this. This is where we come back to our initial disagreement over your examples w/r/t discussions of trans issues and vegan issues - because I do feel the people angry about the way they’re being treated unfairly/exploited are justified in expressing anger at the people who do so, but also those willing to ignore this treatment.

You can argue that this is people turning their anger with the AI threatening their livelihoods at the people using the AI, but then we come back to something similar to the “guns don’t/people do” argument that we’ve both doubtless heard a lot in the past few decades. Sure, you could say AI itself isn’t threatening our fields, people are - and maybe not even always the people directly using the AI, but the suits that will hire them for cheap, or the person who doesn’t see the value in human intention and artistry in the pop culture they want to consume. But if people continue to work with these models and they continue to learn, it only increases an ongoing social devaluation of our disciplines, and therefore decreases the value of our labor/effort by the people who don’t see the difference.

Again, as you seem fine to further experiment with AI yourself and feed it your own work, you might think that this is just a necessary trade to be made in the name of optimized individual experience with these systems. I don’t know.

So, ultimately - I centrally disagree with the initial framing of this as fans attacking other fans, or even an issue of safety or witch hunts. This is people who do creative work, professionally or for fun, having a problem with it being infringed upon by corporate entities in the name of training a machine, and then having the use of that exploitation justified by people who are seeking to ultimately take advantage of it. And not even due to the inescapable nature of doing so, but out of what ultimately boils down to their personal desire to use AI in their own work.

This lands especially heavy in a time where lots of creative people are already trying to

convince the powers that be that their cultivated knowledge and skills are worth respect and proper restitution,

convince the people that consume the work that they aren’t entitled to a creative’s labor for free just because it’s Art,

deal with this weird resentment from people who want to use AI even though many have explained how they’re being hurt by them, and seeing arguments that we’re somehow censoring the creativity of these people by doing so.

It’s a shitty hydra, and we don’t appreciate the people who are contributing to any of its heads.

If you want to call the initial theft a “technicality” and claim it shouldn’t be controversial to continue your use of AI, my only suggestion is to not ask creatives impacted by this to forfeit their right to be angry at this use. That doesn’t excuse targeted abuse, of course; nothing does, end of. But I also don’t think that artists, writers, and other people who have been exploited being generally frustrated and even angry at AI, and the people who perpetuate that exploitation by creating the demand for AI is on the same level as someone being shitty to you as a person or anyone else. There’s not a witch hunt. It’s just going to have to be recognized as a pushback to this ongoing adoption of AI that its makers, funders, and users are pulling for.

You frame this as innocent people getting hurt, but innocent people already have been hurt by these systems, and have detailed how, and that doesn’t seem to warrant as much concern by the proponents now calling for amnesty when that they’ve got something new to tinker with.

You’ve already said you won’t be making any further posts about it, so don’t feel obligated to respond to this. I want to respect your space, and I’m also not really looking to argue - I didn’t intend to write this much about it, as it’s something I find disheartening and frustrating all around.

I don't think I'm actually going to convince you of anything, having read your own justifications, etc. I just wanted to acknowledge the work you put into this post with my own thoughts. Thanks for the willingness for dialogue, you have been someone whose takes/analysis I enjoyed previously.

im not trying to be mean forreal but you arent gonna have people rbing your stuff if you don't tag it! 2 give an example your most recent piece has 7 tags total, two of which are personal tags that no ones gonna search so lets say 5. in addition to the ones you included which werent bad you should also include stuff like the medium (ex: #traditional art) and of course #artists on tumblr. tagging aesthetics that fit also goes a long way. plus a (no guilt) caption requesting that people boost your work. something important to keep in mind with tumblr is that its really good for circulating art LONG term rather than most social media platforms which prioritize feeding the neverending ratrace for whatevers trending. I am in no way a big name artist but my most circulated posts come from people tag searching and queueing. obvs theres usually gonna be the most attention over the first few days but also give it time! don't be afraid to repost or find niches who will circulate your stuff. post art and then link it in oc discords, too this isnt meant to admonish you btw more it makes me sad to see you get discouraged. you have a unique and compelling artstyle with genuinely swagful characters so the idea of you peacing out saddens my heart. i hope this helps, cya

Hey first off. I genuinely appreciate this, I am ngl I knew I shouldn't have posted that last night cuz I knew I'd be embarrassed about it later and well!! Here I am, feeling like a damn fool!! Sincerely tho, your words do mean a lot.

However, the one thing that trips me up is that back when I did use Tumblr more regularly, like several years ago, they had made it so that only the first five tags on a post were searchable, and everything else wasn't visible in tag searches. Has this changed? It's been a long time and I have no idea what's changed with Tumblr in the past few years but I've just been operating on the assumption that only the first five tags "count." Also I am just ... Not good at knowing what to tag things other than in the most straightforward way possible 😬

I definitely absolutely get discouraged way way way too quickly and I acknowledge that, it comes from years of a building frustration of posting on social media and never feeling like it goes anywhere while also watching those around me grow their followings. It's come to a point where it feels like if something I post "fails" then it tanks my mood on a hair trigger. And it's not healthy!!! This is largely why I've stopped posting publicly anywhere. Bc the reaction I've built up is so instantaneous and intense that it's completely unhealthy for me. Sorry to vent at you!! It's all just sort of coming out. I've absolutely poisoned the way I view interaction on social media for myself and it feels very entrenched and I don't really know what to do about it.

I want to share my art with people and I want them to like my art and asking for reblogs directly on art posts is something that always felt gross to me but idk maybe that's what I gotta do. I have this notion in my mind tho that if my art is good and people like it, they'll reblog it because they want to, not because I asked them to. It doesn't feel like people are sharing my art bc they genuinely like it if they're doing it bc I asked them to. And then people don't reblog my art, so it gets interpreted as "well, I guess nobody thinks my art is very good, otherwise they'd want to share it!"

This all feels very immature of me and I hate that this is how I feel. I definitely am very deeply in the mindset now of "well, nobody appreciated my art much when I did post it, so now nobody gets to see it anymore." Idk how to grow past this tbh. I am absolutely only shooting myself in the foot. Oh well whatever!!!

This is my personal (fannish) tumblr for all my fandoms. I reblog other's posts sometimes but mostly I use this tumblr to post my own art and answer asks/fangirl. I am in my damn 30s, so minors be wary (asks about rated g works from minors are okay)

Why is some of your older fanart not posted here?

Weell here's the thing. My old tumblr josiemus-prime was flagged to death because of the nsfw art I'd posted on it. I'm trying not to let that happen to this one (hence the censoring of some art with links to the uncensored versions on ao3). In other cases… I'm just not very fond of some of my old art and for pure ~aesthetic~ reasons I don't want them here (but it's still viewable there!).

Can you restore the link to [missing fanart] on ao3?

Sadly, some of my old art links are dead and gone forever. But I didn't delete them! I have never purposefully deleted any fanart, the only reason they're gone is that I lost the original files, and hosted the images on sites that were unreliable or now defunct (like imageshack or tinypic). I am going to try to redraw some of them eventually though! I hate seeing the dead links :(

Could you help me find [fic example]?

I have answered this in more detail on the faq page of my recs site but the short of it is; you're welcome to ask me anything! But I can't promise I can help all that much with newer fic/themed recommendations. I've listed some other helpful links on my recs faq if you're interested.

Why is some of your fic under another name?

I made thewordsleep as a way to try out other fandoms, but I'm happy with those fics so I've listed them here. I haven't moved them all over to my main account because I'm told people are subscribed to that profile in case I update there.

Why haven't you answered my ask/message?

I'm so sorry! I definitely try to answer them all, but my inbox gets flooded with bots and tumblr eats old asks sometimes bc I'm bad at getting back to people in a timely manner. If you can be bothered, you can send duplicates of the same message so I can notice it faster ;_; sorry again, I want to be friend.

What programs/hardware do you use for your fanworks?

I use Adobe Photoshop 2020 and I've started using Krita for sketching (which is completely free to use). I draw using a Intous Wacom, and I use Sony Vegas 16.0 for vidding. My art and texture resources can be found right here, under resources.

In regards to using my fanworks as prompts or inspiration for fic, vid cons, or anything else:

Go for it! Whatever it's for, I really appreciate being told about it in a comment or message in advance. Links to whatever it's used for are also nice. You can contact me if there are any issues with downloading videos, or if there's expired links or some such, and I'll try to help out if I can!

Claim my work as your own! Please do not copy my works to another site (i.e wattpad/ffn/ao3/pinterest/goodreads). Dear fanfic readers...

I want to start this by saying I love you all. Seriously. I honestly wouldn’t still be writing fanfic if you guys didn’t exist. And I think that’s probably true of a lot of writers. We thrive on readers enjoying our work, leaving kudos/comments, reblogging, sharing with friends, etc. And 99% of people who read/comment don’t fall into this category.

But I have to address something. Er, I have to address a few somethings. Tonight, one of my dear friends received a nasty comment on one of their fics. It was, frankly, a mean rant disagreeing about the choices said writer made in the chapter update. But what really struck me was what they said at the end of the comment—that they admire the author’s work and that they are excited about future chapters. Which to me, meant that they meant their comment as a constructive criticism rather than to be purposefully hateful.

Which leads me to my first “something”:

Long comments about things you personally disagree with in a story is not constructive criticism.

I say this as someone who gives actual constructive criticism to writers for a living. Calling someone’s work horrible or hollow or misguided or flat or [insert long list of other adjectives I’ve seen non-writers call someone’s work] isn’t constructive criticism. It’s not constructive. It’s just mean.

Moreover, constructive criticism has to be founded on mutual trust. If you’re commenting on ao3 or Tumblr or Twitter on someone’s work who did not ask you specifically for constructive criticism, that trust isn’t there.

You’re welcome to your opinions about someone’s story or work. But you are not welcome to share those negative opinions when you don’t have consent. Even when you DO have consent, that constructive criticism needs to be well-structured to include real reasons why something isn’t working in a story (”I don’t personally agree with this choice” is not an example of a real reason) and ways to improve. That respect is the very least a writer deserves when someone is asked (notice how I bolded asked, bc it’s fucking important) to give feedback on work that they spent time and effort on. Which leads me to my next “something”:

Fanfic is provided for free, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t cost something.

I saw a post on here recently (linked here) that talked about how fanfic is provided at no cost to the reader, but that doesn’t mean it’s “free” for the writer. And this is something I think some non-writers don’t quite understand.

Writing a story—whether it be based on characters from a TV show like this fic or based on original characters of your own creation—is a lot of fucking work. It takes hours of your time and so much mental energy. There's the planning and the plotting and the actual writing and the editing and the working up the nerve to post it so that others can see it and hopefully like it. And all of that labor, all of that emotional/mental/physical labor is done for free. So that the stories in our heads and hearts can exist and so that readers can enjoy them.

EVERY choice is thought out. Every. Single. One. Every conversation is considered, every dialogue tag is placed with intention, every choice the character makes is one we make first. And do we always agree with the choices our characters make? Do these choices always perfectly mirror what would likely happen in real life or even if another write were to have written the story? No, not always. But damn if we didn't have a reason for letting them make them regardless. Every facet of a story is considered—especially for longer fics.

So hours of work and a mountain of emotional, mental, and physical energy is put into a fic. Writers open up a door for readers to see into our minds and hearts and souls for these stories. And the very least readers can do is tell us when those stories resonates, and be kind and respectful regardless of if it resonates or not. Deciding to shit on a story because you don't personally agree with the direction the story is headed? That's heartbreaking. And irritating. And frankly unmotivating.

Which brings me to my final “something” of this post:

Negativity and indifference are killing Fandom.

We’ve all seen how Fandom (and I’m not just talking about one specific fandom, I’m talking about capital-F Fandom as a whole) has gone downhill in recent years. There’s less engagement with works, less discussion happening between readers/creators/writers/casual viewers of a fandom, and more writers/creators leaving Fandom behind.

That’s mostly because of negativity and indifference. There are a lot of posts about how people (and I include myself in this because I really need to do better, and I’ve been trying) need to make a mindful effort to comment on fics you like, kudos fics you like, reblog, retweet, converse with your favorite writers/creators, etc. So I won’t harp on that again here.

But negativity is another culprit here. Putting a fic or a piece of art out into the world is terrifying. More terrifying to some than others, but there are nerves and anxieties that go into it no matter who you are. And unlike paid authors publishing books or showrunners air tv shows, the only thing we get in return are the kudos/comments/reblogs/retweets from readers. That’s it. So when we put hours of time and effort and those little pieces of our soul into works only to be met with indifference or hateful comments (even when they are misguided attempts at constructive criticism), it makes the benefit of all that work less and less appealing.

I’ve seen too many writers abandon works and leave fandoms (including t100 fandom, specifically the bellarke fandom) because of this. And I hate it. We have too many talented writers and creators for that. Moreover, the world needs those talented writers and creators to keep making things they love for it to keep spinning (a topic for another long Tumblr post).

So how can Fandom be a better place for writers/creators?

First thing’s first, participate. See a piece of art you loved? Reblog it. Read a fic you adored? Comment something to that effect. Find authors or creators you admire? Reach out to say hey! Or just hit the follow button and interact with posts if you’d rather not say hi. We appreciate all of it and love you immensely for it.

But the kicker once you start participating is doing it mindfully. Think about what you’re commenting and whether it’s helpful or harmful. A long string of emojis bc you can’t put how much you loved a fic into words? We love to see it. Novel-length tags in your reblogs about your favorite lines? Will probably make our day. DMs or asks about upcoming chapters or fic ideas? We’ll scream our joy and talk your ear off.

A rant about how you thought the characterization of Bellamy in this fic was off? That’s not helpful if the writer didn’t ask you specifically for that kind of feedback. And hateful comments about how a fic needs to be updated sooner or how a certain update didn’t mean your qualifications for how you personally wanted a story to continue? Definitely not helpful (and a honestly a dick move).

I have no qualms about speaking on behalf of all fanfic writers when I say that we LOVE every single person who reads our shit. We thrive on people reading our stories and then telling us and their followers how much they loved it. No (kind) comment goes unnoticed or unappreciated.

So please, please, please spread kindness whenever you can to writers and creators. <3

Summary: Crow didn’t want to admit but it was always a relief when he saw Shin skulk around the H.E.L.M. when he was around because if he was here Crow didn’t have to hunt down a certain little boy who was always getting into trouble. You’d think the son of a Baron would be more well behaved but no, Gasknir was a menace. But really he just liked hanging out with Shin. Other than Wolf he was the first person who was… nice to him. And Crow had the bad habit of developing feelings for people who were nice to him.

He pulled a deck out from a pouch. “And if you’ve been hanging around with those low life’s I’m sure they’ve played with you,” he tapped them out into his hand. By low life’s he, of course, meant Alex and Alshain. He didn’t know why Shin had such a problem with them. It was just every time they interacted Shin got mad. And they had some sort of history. The twins couldn’t tell it without having giggling fits.

“Sure, I guess,” Crow came and sat down. Shin shuffled and Crow just watched his hands. He shuffled so smoothly and perfectly, the worn cards going one after the other without any break in the binary. He did a strange card trick that made Gasknir chirp and Shin just looked amused but didn’t smile. He finished shuffling, cut the deck twice, shuffled one last time, and dealt three hands.
