Shiki is fr everything, androgynous but non mistakably female character that's also sadistic but with Morals who's also extremely badass and wields a knife and wears a leather jacket ontop of a kimono and has incredibly op super power of seeing the LINES OF DEATH OF ALL BEINGS AND THINGS EVEN CONCEPTS but it's not cringy or too much it somehow got executed Perfectly. like. She's if a 12 year old tried to come up with a badass character and IT WORKED PERFECTLY. Her eyes light up and she can insta kill anything ?? Literally deviant art oc tier but somehow it works and it's amazing. She's so cool.
#reading the novel and reading her high of getting to kill people and stab them and play with them but never actually killing them bc#of murder being at the end of the day a huge sin is aaaaaaannejhb n!nend IDK WHY I LIKE THAT CONCEPT SM#like i always like everything edgy and sadistic and violent ngl so like. Its intresting to see the same sadism except portrayed#Realistically. Like oh yeah theres Police and jail and also murder is a super huge sin and a bad thing !!!!#but also The Impluses.#like she already has that dual.. tri .. personality ?? girl has twitter DID levels of personality disorder but despite all she still wants#to be normal and good#like she geniunely just wants to be normal because if she did give in her impulses nothing will come out of it and she will feel bad bc#she commited a huge sin. So its just constantly fighting with the 'need to kill!!! murder!!!' urges and with The Morals#MAN. man.#ok spoilers incoming#i love how she never actually murdered anyone all along but that doesnt make her normal still because she still played with the corpses#afterwards and she still enjoys hurting others#but she never did commit any murder .. its that Boundary between not a sinner and a sinner that she's constantly in#another title for the series is 'Boundary of emptiness' and. Yeah#im gonna be honest i didnt understand anything of the after ending extra that explained void shiki and i dont get the stuff about emptiness#but i understand the yin and yang metaphors and. themes. I understand the themes and narratives!!!#at the very end she did kill someone but its as a no fault as a murder can be. like completely sinless bc that was in self defence and#who she murdered was a huge murderer and stalker and to be rapist anyways so at the end. all is well <3#she also did have a normal life as can be atleast. she 😿😿😿😿😿😿😿 married m*kiya and ended up being a m*ther which. i might. yknow.#almost gave the entire series a 4/10 for but its whatever. ive moved on. shes happy and thats what matters ( extereme copium ) ( God i HATE#MIKIYA )#ASIDE FROM THAT SHE DID BECOME A MASSIVE YAKUZA BOSS AND SO YKNOW WHAT ITS fine its fine i loved the extras 😹😹😹😹 ( denial )#THIS GOT WAY TOO LONG AND RAMBLY SORRY. ANYWAYS CONCLUSION I LOVE SHIKI BEST CHARACTER EVER

Hell or Heaven (NONCON SMUT)
Tumblr media
Listen IVE BEEN SO MIA but im back from my much needed break and im ready to start writing for you naughty naughty friends!
Please reblog, like, and let me know what you think!
Warnings: very noncon smut, mentally unstable Marc,, talks about killing, brief Steve in the beginning, overall very noncon stuff you know the drill :))))))) also not proofread
18+ !!!! If you “keep reading” you are acknowledging that you are 18+ and that you have read the warnings.
Please Do not translate, no permission to repost any of my writing on any other platform, and do not copy this and claim it as your own.
Steve tried his best to stay awake, most people adored their sleep but not him. He dreaded it. He hated to wake up feeling worse than the night before, feeling confused, disoriented, and in pain was the worst way to start his morning. But his dreams, lord, his dreams were petrifying. They always felt so real, sinister in every way, shape, and form. As he tried to stop his mind from slipping away, his exhaustion got the best of him, dozing off into his mind.
When his eyes opened, he was in a completely different room. The room was beautifully decorated, a huge 4 corner poster canopy bed with burgundy curtains took up most of the room, but the high ceiling coupled with long curtains made it feel spacious. He was so confused as to what the hell he was doing here in the first place, but then he heard some people talking. He approached another door that was tucked in the corner, walking slowly. When he got closer, he heard people fighting, it seemed to be a woman and man, but one of them sounded familiar. When he opened the door, he felt his body turning into stone. A man was bent over the bathtub…stabbing the woman, repeatedly. He called out to the stranger, telling him to stop but the man wouldn’t listen. Instead he laughed, doing it faster as the poor girls blood spilled from her wrists, down her hand, and droplets hit the floor from her fingers. When Steven approached the man, he yanked him off of, making the man fall back. Steven looked at her lifeless body bleeding in the tub. It was a horrendous site, but the most frightening thing of all, was that the guy that did it, was himself. Steven woke up, screaming and panting. “Nononono NO!” he cried. It took him a minute to realize that it was just a dream, taking deep breaths to calm himself down. Looking at the time it was almost 5am. He ran his fingers through his hair, feeling incredibly hot. He was so confused as to what the hell he had just dreamt. Why would he even dream that? He didn’t even recognize the girl, and he certainly wasn’t a killer.
Steve got up to open a window, letting the cool air in. Looking down at his ankle, his restraint was no longer there, it had been snapped off, but there were no foot prints on the sand. Very odd, he thought. As he got to bed again, he decided to read a book, picking up a new novel his coworker suggested. Grabbing his glasses he started to read. A couple pages in and he was already fed up with it, this was a romance novel, his least favorite genre. Tossing the thing away, he laid back down and just stared at the ceiling, hoping the time would go by fast. That’s when he heard an odd noise that was coming from underneath. It was a tapping sound, weak yet incessant. He thought maybe the neighbors were being annoying but he’s never heard it before. Steve got out of bed and placed his ear on the floor, trying to hear anything else. The sound was increased and he noticed a pattern in it.
“Hello? Are you okay?” He spoke, making the thudding speed up. “If you can hear me, knock two times”
*knock knock*
“do you need help? Knock 3 times if so”
*knock knock knock*
“Shit..hold on let me get down there, one minute”
As he got outside, he ran toward the elevator going one floor down. He tried to figure out who exactly was under him and when he got to the door, he knocked on the door, and that’s when he heard some whimpers, “help” it was so faint, he almost couldn’t hear anything. “Bloody hell, how am I going to get in” he said to himself. The only thing he could think of was breaking the door. He backed up a couple steps and lunged into it, swinging it open. He quickly closed it in order to not get into trouble himself.
When he walked in, his heart started beating a little faster as he saw you chained up to a radiator heater, gagged and bound at the hands and feet. “Oh my god, are you okay?” As he approached you, you backed away from him, your ankle bracelets ratting with every move. “STOP GET AWAY FROM ME, JUST LET ME GO, DONT HURT ME ANYMORE PLEASE” you cried, not being able to fully speak. Steven was very confused, not knowing what to say, “I’m sorry, I think you’ve gotten me mistaken…don’t be scared, I won’t hurt you. May I approach you? You look very unwell and we need to get you out of those chains and to the police” he rushed pulling your gag off and tearing your duck taped hands.
“Why are you doing this to me? Please don’t play with my emotions. Just let me go and I promise I won’t tell anyone.”
“Darling, what are you going on about. just let me help you” he asked reaching out for you.
You started to hyperventilate, getting ready for the impact of his hand on your face…but it never came. He was trying to release your ankles, but he noticed there was a lock to it.
“I don’t suppose you know where the keys are?”
This person was not Marc. He looked and sounded completely different but…it WAS him, physically.
“Look love, I need you to concentrate. It’s a bit dark in here but I promise I’ll look everywhere, I just need a hint or something if you’ve been the person place it somewhere around here”
“You have them”
“Im sorry?” Steven questioned looking at you like you were crazy.
“You always have them. You always place them in your pockets”
Steven was starting to get scared, why was all this happening, his brain couldn’t even process it all the way. When he reached into his pockets…the keys were in there. He dropped them and backed away.
“Please tell me I didn’t do this. Oh my god what the fuck did I do. Am I being punked?” As he started to spiral you tried to bring them close to you without him noticing. You also didn’t know what was happening but you were way too focused on trying to get out of here. He was clearly mentally ill but you mattered more in this moment. As your arms reached for it, he looked at you, “I’m so sorry. I don’t know what’s going on but I think I-” he stopped mid sentence and he looked like he was about to faint but he bowed his head down, jerking it up and down with his eyes rolling back. You grabbed the keys and shoved them in the lock, turning it, you were finally free. You kicked the restrains away from you, tearing the duck tape that was around your knees. Standing up again was a bit foreign since you hadn’t done it in a while but you tried your best to get to the door, but before you reached the door knob, you were yanked back by your hair.
“Where do you think youre going, kitten” the all too familiar voice called out to you, making your eyes go wide in fear. He pushed you back away from the door making you stumble over your feet and hitting the floor. Marc quickly paced toward you, making you back away and putting your hands up, “please just let me go. I don’t want to be here”. Marc grabbed you and pinned you against the wall by your neck. “Shut the fuck up, and stop crying I haven’t done anything yet. Was I not clear when I told you that you were never going to leave if you tried to escape? Hm? You’re staying right here with me, you understand?” he said between his teeth, slowly increasing his grip until you couldn’t breathe. You nodded your head quickly, making Marc smirk in approval. Letting go of your neck, he stepped away from you but caught you as your legs gave out. Marc took you over to the his bedroom, tossing you onto the bed, quickly climbing over you as he ran his hand from your face down to your neck, “you know y/n, I have you here for your own safety. I have a lot of enemies and they all would come after you if they saw you. This is where you belong sweetheart, with me” he whispered kissing your tears away. “Marc, I’m in pain because of you. You hurt me. You ruined my life, taking away all my good friends and family. The person I should have been protected from…is you”
Marc looked at you in awe, he was clearly offended making you regret what you had said, “What did you just say?”
In that moment you got a burst of adrenaline, you knew you were going to get punished for speaking to him that way, so you might as well push him to the extreme. After all, it’s not like he would kill you.
“You heard me, bitch. I should have never given you the time of day, all the time I wasted on you was a mistake. I never loved you and I never will. You are the biggest mistake of my life, I hate you Marc”. His face went blank, he was in total shock from what you said. Feeling relieved, you thought that he would definitely stop with this obsession, hoping that he would finally come to his senses and stop this horrible nightmare. “Y-you don’t mean that. I know you don’t mean that” he cried, “I do mean it. You’re pathetic, if you think I’ll ever love a monster like you. You did this and this is YOUR fault.” Marc couldn’t bare listening to you, so he back handed you. “SHUT UP! Shut the fuck up” he ordered, grabbing your hands and pinning them besides your head. “That was just a warning, the next one will knock you out. If you ever speak to me like that again, I swear to god I’ll fucking kill you. Your life belongs to me, I am in total control of it.”
“Marc…Kill me. I don’t want to live in this hell with you. Just fucking do it” you pushed.
Marc burst into an ominous laughter, “oh kitten, if you think that you’re living in a hell with me now, then I will make sure you feel it and burn eternally here with me”
He kissed you feverishly, enjoying the challenge as you tried to turn away. This was just a way to distract you because once you heard the handcuffs snap around your wrists you stopped. “Let me go. I don’t want this” you warned, pulling at the cuffs, trying to get them off, “you know I always marveled seeing how strong your mind is. It always knows how to think logically and how to not let your subconscious make you weak. It’s one of the thing I love about you” he spoke, getting up from bed and going into the closet. Marc grabbed a hard briefcase, snapping the locks open, revealing a bunch of drugs and needles. He brought it into the room and onto the nightstand. Seeing what was inside you started to freak out, trying to pull away from the cuffs, only making it raw against your skin.
“Please don’t” you begged, looking at his place his finger over his lips, gesturing you to be quiet. He went back to rummaging through the case, picking out a few vials “It is rumored that a strong mind is always hard to break. Of course I’m not speaking out of experience, I’m fucking mental, but we’re going to put that to the test. Youre going fall in love with me y/n, wether it’s the last thing I do.” He picked up a syringe and took a few milliliters from a few vials, pushing up the fluid to get the air out. As he approached you? You felt your heart race, trying to move away from him, “Now now kitten, don’t be afraid, it’s not lethal. Come here.” He motioned for you, as he got on the bed. Marc grabbed your leg and yanked you towards him, making you freeze, “The fastest way to a woman’s heart is through her pussy and if it’s not, then it will be…. for you.” he quickly stabbed the needle into your neck, injecting the liquid into your system. You screamed in pain, watching him take it out and throw it across the room. “It’ll take a few seconds for you to feel it but when you do, honey it’s going to be unbearable” he smirked giving you a hard kiss. You tried to fight him but you soon started melting into the kiss, his body against yours didn’t feel revolting as it usually did, this time it felt good”. As he continued to make out with you, he ran his hands over your breast, feeling your nipple start to harden under his touch.
Your moans were swallowed by his lips, his knee rubbed against your clit making you hiss. You felt feral, wanting to be fucked senseless by him. “What did you do to m-me” you grunted, trying to get more friction between your legs. Marc got up from you, making you whimper. He was clearly hard, you could see the outline of his hard dick in his pants, “I drugged you. You’re going to be feeling an unbearable feeling of arousal and you won’t be able to pleasure yourself. I’m not going to help you either. You’re going to lay here and crave me for a long long time, but I won’t be here to play with you. That’ll teach you some manners” he grabbed another gag and placed it over your mouth before grabbing his case and walking outside of the room, locking the door.
You shook in agony as the pain got worse and worse. Your whole body was burning, jolting your hips up in desperation. Screaming against the gag was dreadful, no one could hear you but Marc. He was in the living room, looking at you through his bedroom secret camera. You looked delectable, whimpering and crying out for him was music to his ears. He was a bit of a sadist, enjoying how you broke down for him. His mind went on to thinking about your delicious lips around his cock, your tear filled eyes, your soft voice calling out for him to stop, but it made him want you that much more. Marc pulled out his dick, giving it a few strokes, while he looked for some videos of him fucking you. There was a night where he took you while you slept, his cock dripped with precum just thinking about how sexy you were moaning half asleep.
As he got to the video he laid back and started to jerk himself off, his dark eyes watching how he defiled you, “fuck” he muttered, pumping himself faster. He edged himself a couple times before cumming, what made him bust was the scene of you moaning his name out in the video. He fucking loved hearing his name coming from your mouth. It was pure ecstasy. He spilled himself all over, shooting his white ribbons all over his legs and hands. As he finished off, he switched back to the live feed, looking at your poor body go through the most excruciating pain. When he opened the door to see you, you nearly screamed in excitement. “Princess, look at the mess that you’re making” he teased, running his finger over the sheet under you. You were so wet that it started to trickle down onto the sheets. “P-plea-se” you begged, crying in frustration. Marc slid his finger in between your folds, making you squeal in relief, but it made you want more. “I can see you’re in pain kitten, do you want Daddy help you out?” He pulled the gag out and waited for you to say the words.
This is what he wanted. He couldn’t break you by torturing you and abusing you so tried this. Your body was up in flames and with every single stroke of his fingers you were in heaven. You didn’t want to give into him, but he was the only one that could take this pain away. “Is my girl there? I asked you a question” Marc cooed, rubbing your nipple over your thin tank top. “I need you…” you whispered, shaking uncontrollably. “Say it again kitten”
“I need you, please” you whined.
“I’d like for you to address me how I taught you”
“Daddyy….please, it hurts” you sobbed, but not because of the pain, it was due to embarrassment. You wanted him to fuck you raw, in the most ungodly ways, just to get this sexual frustration out.
“I’ll think about it sweetheart” he smiled giving you a nice kiss before heading towards the door.
“MARC PLEASE FUCK ME! I cant take this anymore I promise I’ll be good, I swear, I’ll never disobey you, just please…please help me” the desperation in your words was fascinating to him. He loved this way too much, so much so that he turned on his heels and started to get undressed. “You’ve earned it kitten, but I won’t take it easy on you. You’ve been a very bad kitty” he uttered.
Marc spread your legs open and climbed over you, rubbing his hard dick in between your folds. His hips bucked into you, rubbing himself on your clit making you moan. He adjusted it so that he rub his entire length through you. “fuckk” you uttered, eyes rolling to the back of your head as you heart pounded with desire. Marc grabbed your face and shook it, “look at me as I fuck you” he growled through gritted teeth. Opening your eyes, you were met with his dark, almost black, eyes. His wavy hair was sticking to his forehead, just a beautiful sight. Whilst you were lusting for him, he shoved his dick inside you with out warning, making your eyes grow wide, mouth in the shape of an O, gasping for air. Marc bit his lip, looking at you react to him slipping inside you looked like a scene straight out of porn. His hips started moving, taking his length almost all the way out and then sinking deeply inside of you.
“fuck, your pussy feels soo fucking good kitten....never disappoints” his words just made you loose your shit, moaning, “mmm Daddy, tell me more” you smiled, making Marc growl. He got upright  and placed both his hands on your neck, “youre such a filthy whore, you know that? Always wanting Daddy to fuck you like monster, never getting enough. You like it when im balls deep inside you honey, tell me you love it” he snarled, “I love it, yess, please give it to me” smirking at his grip that got tighter and tighter”. Marc started to seriously choke you, cutting all the air supply, smiling at how pathetic you looked trying to regain air, “oh trust me, youre gonna get it” he whispered letting you go. As you started to inhale again, he angled you on your side, lifting your leg up,  drilling you harder than before. He dipped his hand between your lower lips and started to rub on your clit, making you scream out in pleasure. “oh my god, yessss right there Daddy please” you shrieked, completely engulfed in pleasure. You felt your lower region start to feel pressure, squeezing around him, “kitten..i can feel that youre close..dont fucking cum or ill cut your fucking throat” he warned, letting your leg go but keeping you on your side. Marc pressed his chest on your back and reached over to grab a pocket knife that was behind the bed. Flipping it open, he smiled looking at the fear in your eyes on the wall mirror.
It was almost impossible for you, but the cold blade kept you from it, your eyes widened whenever he would press it further in. “I can’t…Daddy…not much longer” you choked, looking at him with puppy eyes. “I said, wait” he whispered, lips pressed onto your ear, rubbing you faster. He looked at your flustered face, your hair all over the place, legs spread wide open for him. His arm was under your head, his hand holding the blade in place while his other hand worked on you. “Look at yourself, kitten….you’re all mine. Only I can make you feel this way, only I can have you..you’re mine till the end of time, no matter what you or anyone has to say” he muttered, looking at you through the mirror. “Say that you’re mine, y/n..”.
You were in so much pain, trying hard to not cum, “I’m yours Marc…only yours” Marc broke the cuffs off, pulling you onto him, “if you want to cum, ride me…cum on my dick” he ordered, grabbing you by the hips. Placing your hands on his broad muscular chest you started bouncing on him, you clit rubbing against his skin. Throwing your head back you moaned out his name, making him feel proud. Marc’s hands roamed all over your body, from your breasts to your ass, bringing you closer to him. Your skin was hot against his, making it so intimate, his arms held you in place as you bounced on him. “Daddy….I’m cumming” you whined, feeling your whole body tense up, you grabbed onto him and let yourself go, cumming all over his cock. While you were feeling the power of your orgasm he pushed you down and rammed into you, chasing his own high. Looking at you squirm, his sinister smile appeared, grabbing your hips fucking into you harder. “Fucking hell…youre gripping me so tight” he shuddered, squeezing your hips. Marc was not slowing down, pumping into you faster than before, begging to see stars, “Marc” you groaned, closing your eyes, completely lost in your own pleasures. He didn’t even warn you, spilling his seed inside you, unable to move. He cursed under his breath as he emptied himself inside you, feeling his warm cum inside you.
He thrusted into you a few more times, pushing his seed deeper, “I gotta get you pregnant kitten, let’s just lay here a few more minutes” he smiled. Hearing those words made you feel fear, they snapped you back into the horrific reality that was your life right now. You had just finished having sex with your kidnapper, and he was trying to get you pregnant? “No Marc, I DONT want to. I don’t want a baby” you spoke frantically, while trying to get up from under him. Marc grabbed your arms and pushed them down, “Well good thing it’s not up to you. I want a family. You’re mine, remember? Or must I remind you again” he spoke glancing over to the vial which he had used earlier. You stopped fighting him immediately, “You’re far too irresistible Y/n, if I had it my way, I would take you every hour, but you would bed ridden and we don’t want that. We want you strong and healthy for our future baby, right?” Marc smiled down at you, holding your face in his hand, “No Marc, I don’t want a family with you. You’re sick, and this is not norma” you were cut off by his hand going over your mouth, his expression changing immediately, “Wrong answer” feeling a pinch on your neck, your eyes moved toward the source and it was another syringe, emptied of its contents. This time you felt yourself slipping away slowly, “what..did you..” slurring your words, unable to continue. Marc got up from bed, clamping an anklet on you, “Dont be scared kitten, it’s just sleep medicine. You need to stay down while I’m out getting some supplies. I can’t have you catching anyones attention,” he explained, leaning over you, giving you a quick peck, “Sleep well, Darling”

The Villain's Older Sister Suffers Again Today - By Hyeon (6.5/10)
Tumblr media
I tried my best, but I just can't. This is a yandere fantasy reincarnation comedy with time travel elements. The main couple is also a pair of adopted siblings. The plot is very thin and convoluted at the same time. It's too much. I just can't.
ʘ‿ʘ
Lydia is a gorgeous rich girl, but she used to be a very unlucky Korean woman. She remembers her past life, so she really appreciates the life she has now. She is the only spoiled daughter of a Duke. Back in Korea she was a poor student who was being stalked.
Tumblr media
That stalker hunted her down. She ran into the street and got hit by a truck. She never got a moment of peace, because she was always being followed. Life as Lydia Widgreen is way easier. Then that life shatters. The Duchess gives birth to another child. The Ducal couple thought they were infertile. Lydia isn't their real daughter. Her bad luck is back again....or is it? Lydia doesn't get thrown out. The Duke and Duchess do not pay much attention to her, but they don't abandon her. They're very medium parents. Not awesome but not evil.
Tumblr media
After her parents die Lydia starts to get suspicious. Her life is very similar to a novel in the family library. Only she can read that novel. The words inside are invisible to everyone else. Lydia eventually accepts that she is a side character in a fantasy world. Her younger brother is the final boss. The villain.
Tumblr media
Ash Widgreen probably knows Lydia is not his real sister. He's kind to her. He is definitely in love with her, and he was a yandere in the novel. He was obsessed with the charitable saint Agrita. Agrita was a walking, talking stereotype. She volunteered at soup kitchens. She helped the poor etc. Lydia isn't that charitable, but she is that only person that has ever argued with Ash. He feels comfortable around her.
Tumblr media
Ash doesn't see people as living things. He is a psychopath. When Lydia lost her toy doll he got her a new doll. He dressed up a live maid in doll clothes and tried to give her to Lydia. Lydia immediately slapped him and screamed. They had a colorful childhood together, and their parents did nothing to stop Ash. Ash likes to give presents to Lydia.
Tumblr media
Ash is very unreasonable. Lydia always tries to smile around him. She has learned to hide her fear. Ash isn't unstable. He's violent. He isn't being controlled by evil magic. He's actually just a psychopath who got attached to Lydia. In the original novel he stabbed her as soon as the truth came out. When he saw her adoption forms he stabbed her. He only kept her alive because a Widgreen woman is a valuable marriage token. Now she's alive because he likes her.
Tumblr media
Lydia lives in fear. She wants to swear at Ash and run for the hills, but his men are everywhere. He controls the underworld. His handsome face hides most of his sinister deeds. His money helpfully covers up the rest of his transgressions. Lydia wants to run away, even though she's more spoiled now. As soon as Ash took his title she got even more money and power, but she's petrified.
Tumblr media
Why?
Well, Ash has no regard for the lives of others. When Lydia makes an offhand comment Ash sets off a bomb in the middle of the city. Yup. You read that right. He explodes the town square because Lydia said it looked old and needed to be redone.
What?
Huh?
The explosion kills the female lead, who is supposed to be Ash's obsession. Lydia needs Agrita, because she wants to quietly flee while Ash is distracted.
Tumblr media
Lydia has fifteen time travel crystals. (The crystals originally belonged to Agrita. She used them all to save others in the original novel.)
Huh?
She uses them to bring Agrita back three times, but the female lead keeps dying.
Huh?
Tumblr media
I had hope for a second. I thought that Ash was maybe killing Agrita over and over. Possibly because he noticed that Lydia was paying attention to her. He clearly wants all of Lydia's attention, but sadly that is not the plot twist. Agrita is...a reincarnated Korean high school girl.....hooray...the fantasy world is treating Agrita like an error... because she isn't behaving like a Saintess. She's just a fifteen year old that wants to go home. So, Lydia has to save her and somehow get the real Agrita back.
No, she doesn't know Ash loves her.
Lydia is extremely dense. Agrita is naive plus she's a fifteen year old in an adult body. This isn't fun, and it isn't funny, but Ash is a yandere.

Okay so I know I’m far off my rocker with what I’m about to say but I have to say it otherwise I’ll forget or keep thinking about it like crazy.
It’s probably just me but I can’t help but feel like SNS aren’t straight. I can’t help but feel like Naruto could possibly be bi with women preference or don’t realize it. I can’t help but feel like Sasuke might be gay or bi. I don’t want to state it as a fact because we don’t know their sexualities canon wise plus I want to respect the author’s creation however I can’t see those two as straight, especially Sasuke. I understand that Sasuke puts his goals before romance and that may be the case for this. I know he wants to defeat his brother and restore his clan, thats his top priority in life. People say he doesn’t know how to express his emotions, yet I see it fine with Naruto. He seems to trust Naruto more than anything and wants to be with Naruto. He turns down girls, mainly Sakura when it comes to affection or flirtatiousness. Now it could be just that those girls see him as a trophy and Sakura doesn’t understand him or respect him, however even after Boruto when he “marries” Sakura, it seems he’s depressed and regrets the relationship. He visits Naruto’s family more than his own and I find it depressing and interesting because it shows he chooses Naruto over his own “wife”. Even with Karin, he cares about her as a comrade or friend yet I don’t feel romantic attraction on his side. Yet I feel a bit of that with him and Naruto. There was a rumor that the author or creator of Naruto that between Sasuke, Naruto, and Sakura isn’t a love triangle but rather a circle like a fish biting its own tail. So Naruto —> Sakura —> Sasuke and Sasuke —> Naruto. Anyways, i know this show isn’t about their sexuality and I shouldn’t focus on that but I couldn’t help but notice something or rather feel it. Also, your post on SNS Sasukes pov, I remember you mentioning Sasuke being comfortable enough to show his vulnerability with Naruto and that had me thinking... is this Sasuke accepting his love for Naruto? Is this Sasuke allowing Naruto to open him and save him. It seems Naruto was the first and only person that made his way to his heart, even expanding it just a little.
That’s just me but I would love to hear what you have to say and correct me if I’m wrong. What do you think?
Nice ask @larrycherry04 😍😍
There was a rumor that the author or creator of Naruto that between Sasuke, Naruto, and Sakura isn’t a love triangle but rather a circle like a fish biting its own tail. So Naruto —> Sakura —> Sasuke and Sasuke —> Naruto.
Again larry, there is no official proof for this interview. And if it is so, I don’t really believe any of his interviews, tbh.
Tumblr media
These are the two different official interviews from Shounen Jump at different point of time with Kishimoto and two contradicting answers.
So, when it comes to drawing Manga, Kishi was very truthful. But when it comes to interviews, he started to contradict his own answers. Which makes him a liar, in my opinion and I don’t blame him.
So, In short, Read the manga or Watch the Anime and see how you feel about it and come to a conclusion rather that believing his interviews.
But to answer whether it’s a love circle??? Nope.
Sakura, like I said before, she is a pairing fodder for Sasuke, most of the time and for Naruto, a little bit.
If it is a love circle, like, if Naruto truly loved Sakura, he never should’ve let Sasuke off the hook, for all the tantrums/outbursts he has shown towards Sakura not once or twice but multiple times.
Imagine you are Naruto, you love Sakura so much and values her a lot above everyone.
What would you do in the following scene?
Tumblr media
I seriously can’t stop laughing here. Here, a boy, your supposed rival, is mildly insulting your most valued person’s tears. What will you do?
You will speak on her behalf, Of course. Just like Naruto did.
But the moment your rival says something to you, you forget everything about Sakura and starts to think about your rival. Wellllll ... So weird!!!!! Which begs the question ‘Do you really love her in the first place???’.
In this scene, the moment he heard those words from Sasuke, Sakura was out of the picture. Important point to note, Naruto still had a crush on Sakura until this point.
Moment 1
Sakura: I am going to stab Sasuke-Kun
Sasuke : Am gonna kill you too
**Naruto heroically saves her**
Naruto: Sasuke, Sakura was a member of Team 7.
Sasuke: I don’t give a fuck
Naruto: Anyways, I heard the truth about Itachi and what you’ve been doing so far, is understandable, (including trying to kill Sakura)
Sakura: **surprised pikachu face**
Moment 2
Sakura: I love you, Sasuke-Kun
Sasuke: Annoying!! I am gonna put her in a murdering Genjutsu
Naruto: Sasuke, you shouldn’t have put her in such a strong Genjutsu
Sasuke: If I didn’t , she will come in our way
Naruto: Ummm, that’s true. Let’s go fight!!!
This is the pattern of Team 7 dynamics even until the very end. And I don’t see a love circle at all.
To put it bluntly,
Tumblr media
These words from Naruto is an admonition to Sakura, that is, ‘Whatever happens between us, do not meddle!!’
Sakura is just a third wheel to elevate the relationship between Naruto and Sasuke. Naruto likes her but not more than Sasuke. Naruto will die for Sasuke but not for Sakura. Sasuke will put his life on the line for Naruto but not for Sakura.
Sasuke closed all his walls in his heart to let anyone in, after the massacre. And even before that incident, it was never shown that he had any friends or rather he was frustrated with those boys revering him because of the ‘Uchiha’ name he bears. Uchiha is the powerful clan of Konoha and so everyone has high level of expectations. So, there is that.
Tumblr media
Sasuke was thoroughly frustrated at this comment because nobody is seeing him as a boy named ‘Sasuke’ in his Academy. Even his homeroom teacher saw him as 'Itachi's little brother'. He was clearly facing an identity problem during this time, even in his home. Because Fugaku, Sasuke’s father completely ignored Sasuke and was showing his full attention towards his brother Itachi. When it comes to girls, I don’t have to say anything. They treated him like a trophy. Meaning, Everybody was expecting something from him but nobody was trying to befriend him unconditionally or approach him for who he was.
This was explained nicely by Itachi in Itachi Shinden novel.
Tumblr media
I wish this scene were in the Anime series. Such a warm one.
He was turning down all those girls, because like you said, they just see him as a cool boy who can do anything. And Sakura was one among them.
If Sasuke looked like Rock Lee, would Sakura have flirted with him??? Absolutely not.
And to play romance, there should be certain effort from Sasuke’s side, like going for dates or whatever shit, which he was never ready for. Most of all, there should be a reason when you start a relationship. Sakura never tried to reach him in a deeper level and tried to understand his sufferings and hence there were no reason. This is the case even after their marriage. Does she know about Uchiha Clan massacre's reason? Or Itachi? If she had known, she should've educated her daughter and stopped wearing that fucking clan crest on their back. And most of all, what could Sasuke talk with her if she doesn't know a single thing about him?? Their relationship was built on Editorial pressure, regrets and shallowness. Of course, If I were Sasuke, I would avoid my family by staying in my office more.
With Karin, their relationship was purely business 'I use you, you use me' kind. He was very clear about that when he formed 'Team Hebi'.
Tumblr media
He helped Suigetsu to get Zabuza's sword and in turn Sasuke wants him to help with his goal. Same with Karin & Jugo. But it seems Sasuke respected her a lot in terms of her strength. Karin was similar to Sakura when it comes to flirting but when it comes to work she means business and can offer Sasuke a lot in terms of Chakra replenishment or sensing enemies plan while battling. That's why he treated her better than Sakura but that's all there is to it. It never went anywhere because Karin knows nothing about him. And Sasuke was not interested in forming a bond with any of Team Taka members either.
In other words, to evolve from a friendship to romance, it takes a massive effort from both sides in terms of understanding. Like I said before, Sasuke built a strong wall around his heart and he never let anyone in it as he saw it as a weakness. Sakura barely made a scratch on that wall. Just for becoming a friend takes a big effort to break that wall. How much effort do you think it takes for romance?? Instead of becoming his friend first, Sakura jumped straight into romance, which makes Sasuke uncomfortable most of the times. Hence the depressed reaction you see in Boruto.
Even with Karin, he cares about her as a comrade or friend yet I don’t feel romantic attraction on his side. Yet I feel a bit of that with him and Naruto.
Hmmm, I don't see Sasuke having a romantic attraction with Naruto. Romantic attraction leans towards sexual desire. But, Sasuke has more of a childlike attraction which leans towards purity and innocence, like more of a desire to be near Naruto, will never be bored even if it was for eternity and would like to look after his safety without expecting anything back.
I've seen this quite a few times.
Tumblr media
Sasuke is not competing here, otherwise he would have walked ahead Naruto. He just wants to walk along side him.
Tumblr media
This is that dream sequence after their fight. Sasuke, just like before, approaches Naruto by himself and listens to him intently. I am pretty sure he could do this for a whole day and still would not leave him.
Tumblr media
LOL. Sasuke, at this moment, doesn’t gives two shit about the world. Meaning he is not missing anyone from there. The person he really wants to be with is right next to him. He even convinces Naruto that Kakashi and Sakura will do something and he doesn’t have to worry. However the moment Naruto leaves, he worries and looks around for him.
This is what I called, an innocent attraction and the desire to be around the person you feel warm and comfortable.
But every possibility of changing this into romance is already there. Because Naruto broke his wall long back and has a high place in his heart. A strong friendship with an innocent attraction is all there. If someday Kishi comes out and said 'Sasuke loved Naruto', I won't be surprised at all.
Sasuke being comfortable enough to show his vulnerability with Naruto and that had me thinking... is this Sasuke accepting his love for Naruto? Is this Sasuke allowing Naruto to open him and save him. It seems Naruto was the first and only person that made his way to his heart, even expanding it just a little.
I think Sasuke started to like Naruto unknowingly ever since he started to watch him secretly. Because it always makes him feel warm and fuzzy.
Tumblr media
But, the scars left by Itachi made Sasuke feel that having people around will always makes him weak. Meaning, The more people you love and when you lose them, you will feel weak. Hence, he was very hesitant to reach Naruto. Slowly but surely, Naruto was already making his way into Sasuke’s heart. And once they were put in the same team, he just loved Naruto unconditionally. That’s why he almost gave his life for him.
But Once Sasuke decided to leave the village, he severed all the ties with Konoha, including Kakashi and Sakura. The level of bond Sasuke had with them can be cut off by saying ‘Thank you’. But with Naruto, it takes more than that. Because for Sasuke, Naruto’s existence itself is making him weak by bringing back all the feelings he once had for him. Like Orochimaru said, Naruto has certain power to influence Sasuke’s heart. So Sasuke decided to kill him but in the end he simply couldn’t.
Everytime Sasuke strays off the path, Naruto will always appear and remind him that he is his friend
Tumblr media
Every time Naruto appears and talks to him, Sasuke’s heart was changing but he simply doesn’t want that and he hates that feeling. Which was why he wants to destroy Naruto and whatever he represents. What Naruto represents is a powerful bond between Sasuke and Naruto.
In the final fight, he simply couldn’t cut that bond even though he had a chance to kill. These bipolar battles are what he was fighting all along internally. And finally accepts that he lost and was happy for it. Those words, ‘I lost’ meant he lost the fight physically and mentally he had with Naruto and was ready to totally embrace the feelings he already had.
It’s not Naruto who was expanding Sasuke’s heart a little, Sasuke already gave a wide berth for Naruto and one day decided to close it. In the end, he couldn’t.
As for their sexualities, I seriously could not conclude anything. But from the way Naruto behaves, he certainly looks like a closeted bisexual just like Kishimoto. And Kishi was not hold his guns in this aspect at all, he went all out in the Manga chapter 347.
Tumblr media
I mean it was evident from the way he casted Multiple Reverse Harem no jutsu before Kaguya without any reaction but when Konohamaru did the same Jutsu with Sai and Sasuke, he looked visibly disgusted.
Tumblr media
Why to react extremely when Konohamaru is doing the same as you? Probably he doesnt like Sasuke in this jutsu I guess. LOL.
Tumblr media
When asked about that ‘accidental’ kiss again, he reacts visibly disgusted but at the same time with a Nosebleed. This screams ‘Closet bisexual’ to me.
As for Sasuke, I simply see him as close to Asexual and possibly demisexual for Naruto.
Why Asexual?
Because Kishi purposefully made Sasuke to be in certain awkward scenes and on top of it, he painted an over sexualized aura all over him, in part II of the manga. It was evident from his bare chested costumes and the way characters like Karin behaves around him. In the same chapter 347, Kishi went all out for Sasuke too.
Tumblr media
I don’t even know why Kishi made this scene. But it certainly shows Sasuke wasn’t bothered by a naked man at all unlike Naruto who acted disgusted.
I simply cannot see Sasuke will be romantically attracted to someone if they cannot form a strong bond with him. And to form that kind of bond is not an easy task. But even for a demisexual, there will be a preference. and his preference were not any of those girls especially Sakura. So, I can safely say, if he ever wants to be romantic, all the possibilities points towards Naruto. Because of certain obsession he has towards Naruto throughout the War arc.
Believe me, Obsession comes from two ways. You will be obsessed on someone whom you hate to your bone because of what they did to you. Most possibly, a hard betrayal. Or, You will be obsessed on someone who you love above yourself.
Itachi falls under the first category (that’s why when Sasuke was told Itachi was good all along, he couldn’t accept the fact that he hated him for wrong reasons and he snapped and went onto a killing spree because of that obsession. Even though he was sane after losing his parents) and Naruto falls in the later.
Like he was basically saying ‘Naruto is my person. Only I can kill him, he is not yours’ to Obito when he was trying to kill Naruto. And where did these obsession comes from provided Naruto never betrayed him in any which ways? Because of all the past he had with him and he was already in love but was trying to deny it.
Anyways at the end of the day, I don’t mind their sexualities at all. What matters is how they prioritizes each other at any given situations without an ounce of regrets. Because, like I always say, their bond transcends way beyond Marriage, Children and Sex.
Hope my answer helps :-)

CQL Rewatch - Ep 23
Tumblr media
Seriously, how useless are these two right now? The puppets all dropped dead around them, yet none of them run up to help Wei Wuxian. I think we saw Lan Wangji running, but he just had dramatic close-up shots for the first few minutes as well. Like, stop looking dumbfounded and stop just providing facial reactions to things, and get up there! Act like you're in a war, gdi! They're reacting to seeing Wen Ruohan stabbed, which I chose not to cap for obvious reasons.
Tumblr media
So even though I knew the story from the book, I still think this moment is pretty cool when they reveal that it's Jin Guangyao who has stabbed Wen Ruohan literally and figuratively in the back. The last time we saw him, poor Nie Mingjue was getting the crap beat out of him by Jin Guangyao, so seeing this here--like, ooh! Double-double-cross! Triple-cross!! It's fun to see a twist that doesn't make you groan! Because, of course, you want to root for Jin Guangyao because he's a bastard and has always been looked down on everyone. Now you see that he was not a villain at all, and he was actually helping the good guys by double-crossing Wen Ruohan! Of course, we know he really is a villain and all, but most of that really doesn't come until later in the story haha.
Tumblr media
I do enjoy the light parallels here between Lan Xichen and his brother. We see both of them willing to give their best friends the benefit of the doubt and protect them from those who are less willing, let's say. And both of them are even willing to stand up to other people they know and trust. Nie Mingjue is one of Lan Xichen's closest friends, and we see Lan Wangji stand up to his own uncle. If you're looking at CQL without the romance angle (which, why would you?), this parallel is a bit more striking. You basically have two sets of bosom friends. Obviously one set crumbles at the end, but there are definitely a lot of parallels and comparisons to make. And sorry, for a show that couldn't have any gay characters, they sure made it seem like Lan Xichen and Jin Guangyao had a thing for each other (even though neither of them is gay in the book, mind you). A weird sort of change--I don't even ship them, but their early scenes seemed very shippy. Maybe it's my American lens, I don't know.
But speaking of weird changes, allow me to go on a tangent. Wen Qing's role expansion doesn't bother me, not really. I kind of say it does, but it's not really the expansion that gets to me. It's the fact that she was going to be a love interest for Wei Wuxian that bothers me. Wei Wuxian is gay. He's gay. Lan Wangji is also gay--if not gayer. Her being a love interest for either one of them means they are no longer gay. Bi, maybe, but what that would have done was erase their canon sexuality. It would have also turned their relationship into that horribly tropey brothers-in-arms or whatever name you want to give it--basically JUST FRIENDS who want to defend each other's honor. You can certainly read CQL that way, but if you are, I don't think you're paying attention to Wang Yibo's performance at all. And if you're not paying attention to the second lead, then why are you watching this show at all? So, changing their sexuality changes the whole show (which already is so tropey, from what I understand) into something so derivative, I wouldn't even want to bother watching it. One of the things I think you take away from CQL is Lan Wangji's, frankly, undying love for Wei Wuxian. If he goes and has a fling with Wen Qing at any point, that cheapens his character dramatically in my opinion. Lots of people can say this better than me, and probably have, but I'm very grateful to those passionate fans (and to Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo) for helping to change the script from the original drafts, which were frankly no better than a junky harlequin romance, having Wen Qing passed around like a piece of meat, which is so far from her character in the novel, and definitely a disservice to her.
Tumblr media
Not gonna lie, it's adorable to think that Jiang Yanli and Lan Wangji have been talking over the past few days, maybe having tea together, while Wei Wuxian is in a coma. I feel Lan Wangji was a very calming presence for Jiang Yanli, because she was probably very worried and fretful over Wei Wuxian. I like the idea of him playing the guqin for Wei Wuxian, and then having tea and a quiet chat with Jiang Yanli before leaving. Also very cute that Wei Wuxian is half-heartedly trying to badmouth Lan Wangji, by calling him boring and uninteresting, but he can't even get through the sentence without smiling to himself. Obviously he's loving the idea that Lan Wangji has been at his side every day, worrying over him and slowly doing his part to nurse him back to health.
Tumblr media
I love his expression here: shock and relief and joy, all mixed together upon seeing that Wei Wuxian has woken up. Obviously he knew he'd wake up eventually, but he didn't expect it so soon and I don't think he expected his heart to be in his throat and to be so indescribably happy to see Wei Wuxian awake.
Tumblr media
Wei Wuxian, of course, can't really meet his eyes, and Jiang Yanli makes a swift exit (she knows what's up--these boys need to talk). And Lan Wangji just has love in his eyes: Heart-guang Jun. I mean, imagine how he must be feeling right now. He had just gotten Wei Wuxian back from what seemed like certain death, finally reconciled, and then Wei Wuxian is in a coma! He must have been terrified of losing him again. It's probably all he can do right now to not hug Wei Wuxian.
Tumblr media
I seriously love everything about this scene. I love the colors, the cinematography, the longing glances Wei Wuxian gives Lan Wangji, the way Lan Wangji quietly scolds him while still playing the guqin because he's a professional. But really, I just find this scene very pretty and moving and emotional. I enjoy seeing Lan Wangji getting to take care of him and even more that Wei Wuxian lets him and puts up with it. I think most of us are quick to retort a good old, "I'm fine" when asked how we are, but in this case, Wei Wuxian is not fine, and he has no ground to stand on if he's trying to prove that. It's hard for Wei Wuxian at this point, though, to really lean on anyone, even Lan Wangji who is his best friend. He certainly can't lean on Jiang Cheng for reasons I don't think I need to go into again. He kind of leans on Yanli, but at the same time, he can't (and doesn't wish to) burdon her either. Lan Wangji is really the one person he should be able to lean on and seek comfort from, but he feels awkward and uncomfortable, because of the dark spiritual energy and giving up the sword, and Lan Wangji's crusade to help him.
Tumblr media
"Who is good and who is evil?" Wei Wuxian is struggling with a moral dilemma: is it right to round up the Wens and kill them/hold them captive? The Wens did horrible things, after all, and this is the reality of war. Of course, we've just seen Lan Xichen struggling with it as well. Why capture the women and children and elderly, who have nothing to do with the war? He's only met with the fact that it's not just the male cultivators who are dangerous. Still, his mind is only placated by the lie that the people will just be interrogated and sent to a labor camp--then cut to the blood on the floor. So Wei Wuxian is not only struggling with what the Jin Clan and other clans are doing, but he's also thinking about his own deeds--how many people did he kill? How many did he brutally murder in the name of revenge? Because of the things he's done, is he good or evil? Is good and evil so black and white? Does it just depend on whose lens you're viewing it through?
Lan Wangji looks at Wei Wuxian with all of this knowledge and doesn't know what to think. He's afraid of what Wei Wuxian has become, afraid he'll end up like Wen Ruohan--he's afraid of losing him entirely. But the situation is not black and white, and good and evil is not so easily defined. You can only know once you know that person's heart, and Wei Wuxian isn't really letting Lan Wangji in anymore. He's trying to convince him with his words, but that is simply not good enough.
Tumblr media
I think if Lan Wangji hadn't stopped him here, Wei Wuxian would have played that flute and tried to end all of the Jin "hunting party" (sorry, that was a little dark). His emotions were already high after the conversation with Lan Wangji on the cliff, and we've already seen him feeling disturbed by how the Wens are being chased and rounded up. I, for one, wouldn't have complained if Jin Zixuan's cousin bit the dust earlier. I think his name is Jin Zixun. Is that it? See, even I don't remember him.
Tumblr media
I love how even though they are far apart, this scene still feels very intimate. It's very moving, and the music and the cinematography help to cultivate that feeling. I like how Wei Wuxian perks up when he hears Lan Wangji pluck the first few notes, and Lan Wangji does the same when he hears the sound of Wei Wuxian's flute. I feel like they are spiritually connected here as they play this haunting duet. And I think it's a connection they haven't felt for a long time. There has been so much tension between them for so long, and this scene feels like a big sigh from both of them. While I still feel like there is tension present, there is a bit of a release here--at least, that's how I feel as a viewer.
Tumblr media
Ah, yes, the awkward period where Jiang Cheng has become leader of the Yunmeng Jiang Sect, wants to control Wei Wuxian, but doesn't know how. He's new at this, so I can't blame him for being a bit awkward as he figures out what he's supposed to be doing. As a young man, he basically nagged Wei Wuxian for doing inappropriate things, but now when Wei Wuxian misbehaves, Jiang Cheng is in part responsible for that behavior. At some point or another, the two of them grew up. Wei Wuxian's misbehavior isn't precocious anymore--it's serious and it has consequences, and just as in Gusu, Jiang Cheng sees that those actions are a reflection of the Jiang Clan. Only now, they aren't just a reflection of the clan, they're also a reflection of Jiang Cheng, himself, and his leadership (or lack thereof).
Tumblr media
And speaking of awkward...Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji have some...unresolved...stuff to deal with. But God forbid they actually talk right now. How can they? They're at this stuffy banquet that neither one of them want to be at. I feel for them both. Wei Wuxian is hurt because he thinks Lan Wangji doesn't trust him. Lan Wangji feels terrible because he wants to help Wei Wuxian, but the latter won't really let him in and allow him to do so. I feel myself just on pins and needles during these scenes with all these glances, but at the same time, I love it because DRAMA and ANGST! And they're just so in love lolol.
Tumblr media
Nie Mingjue has to be that guy that always wants a certain table. The waiter leads him over and says, "Is this table okay?" expecting the answer to be yes, but nope--not Nie Mingjue. He'll request a different table. XD
Tumblr media
I love this little conversation--it's like they're both measuring each other up. I think they each have a healthy distrust of the other. Although Wei Wuxian has always been kind to Jin Guangyao, I don't think that discounts the whole demonic cultivation thing in his mind. He knows Wei Wuxian is smart and clever and, most importantly, capable. And as for Wei Wuxian, I don't think the ease in which Jin Guangyao manipulated Wen Ruohan is lost on him.Essentially the downfall of this great cultivator and enemy of all the other clans was due to one man: Jin Guangyao. I think Wei Wuxian is thinking the same thing I am: he's extremely clever, devious, and potentially dangerous if you get on his bad side. His rise to power within the Jin Clan is kind of amazing. His estranged father admits to Nie Mingjue and Lan Xichen that Jin Guangyao is his son, his station has improved drastically in a short amount of time. He sure as hell is dangerous.
Tumblr media
Jiang Yanli can hardly contain her excitement when Jin Guangshan brings up her former engagement to his son. Just kidding, of course. I'm kind of horrified for her that he's bringing this up now in front of all these people. It feels very much like he's pressuring not only her, but also his son to get engaged again. First of all, Jiang Fengmian and Jin Guangshan agreed at the time to let the children decide whether they wanted to get married or not. Second, if you're going to talk about this, at least do it in private! Third, this is not letting the kids decide. God, this would be humiliating! And I also totally expected Jiang Cheng to speak for his sister here, so I'm glad he didn't do that. It's really none of his business either.
Lol! The weird cutoff here! Who's speaking??? I don't know!!! I mean, obviously, it's Wei Wuxian, but it's like they don't expect us to recognize his voice hahahahaha.

Witch x Witch Hunter AU
You’d be correct in guessing this is a new AU that I have come up with and I have zero idea what to title it yet! I just have to talk about it and that is why we’re doing a different WIP Wednesday this week.
To give a little history on this, I watched a review of a book that I haven’t read (Serpent & Dove) about 3 weeks ago. And it wasn’t until a week later (on my birthday actually) that I went to bed and randomly thought of a way to fix up the driving event of the book. From there my AU quickly spiraled into a novel-length story that I’m piecing together relatively quickly. This has been on my mind ever since I came up with it and I am obsessed with how it’s actually turning out. I am less obsessed with the fact that it will most certainly be 40+ chapters but what can you do about it? The story demands what it demands. I have written down half a notebook for this already and I have managed to get to the outline of chapter 18. I have solid ideas up to chapter 20 and a general sense of how the rest is going to go plus more emotional development of the characters as well as of their relationship.
To summarize briefly - Griffin is a witch who is looking to access Eraklyon’s top secret library/spell reserve. That leaves her having to face Valtor who is a witch hunter. Griffin is in for a nasty surprise when Valtor turns out to have much more powerful magic than she could have anticipated and Valtor is in for a nasty surprise when Griffin manages to stab him with his own blade. In the end of their fight, Valtor captures her and saves her life from the crowd gathering that would have torn her apart. Griffin is a prisoner to the Eraklyon crown and gets sentenced to death at the stake. However, she is offered a deal - marry Valtor to act as his cover for infiltrating the largest and most notorious witch coven and get to live another day. No one’s giving her any guarantees about her safety during the mission or her fate after her job is done and she has a secret she must protect at all costs. To top it all off, the royal family of Domino approaches her with the true agenda behind the mission and she is forced to reevaluate her own priorities and feelings on the public’s general attitude towards witches as well as her interactions with Valtor, who is struggling with the demons of his own past and present.
That was not entirely brief but I have only made it up to chapter 6-7 there. Here is a little sneak peak from chapter 8. Valtor has just informed of all the atrocities the Coven has committed and Griffin is being forced to acknowledge his disgust of witches. Or rather she’s looking for a way to avoid acknowledging it.
“Why would they do that and make everyone hate witches?” As if the general public needed more excuses to murder innocents. Covens were becoming a rarity when the most common safety precaution witches chose to take was solitude. To have the luxury of community and throw it away to make life harder for your own kind, for those witches out there who were on their own... Griffin herself was still worlds away for becoming so jaded by witches’ constant mistreatment that she’d stop caring for the people like herself.
“Because they don’t care about others. Including their own.” Valtor’s eyes had strayed from the memory of her retching over a poor’s girl agonizing death at the stake that should have been hers but there was a certain smugness to his gaze as it challenged her to prove him wrong.
“What if they’re being framed?” That was unlikely but she couldn’t lead a dialogue about nuanced moralities with his refusal to acknowledge the existence of morality in witches. She was having a hard time proving the loyalty between witches as a lone witch and he took her silence as support of his ludicrous notions.
“Why would anyone try to frame them?” Valtor was rather pushing to make her stumble than from honest interest in a continuing debate.
“To get rid of them.” Out of all people she would’ve thought he’d grasp the objective. “I told you - royals fear dark magic because it’s powerful.” Without the shackles that had been on her wrists or the chip in her neck that could blow up her magic Erendor and Samara’s crowns would have been nothing more but clay in her hands. She could have fashioned their demise with the snap of her fingers and the only person that could have stopped her was also forced to obey their will.
“It’s dangerous,” Valtor sounded like they’d put a whole new brain in him instead of just chipping him.
“You have it.” And he was a rare case of voluntary possession of magic. So many witches she’d met would have traded their magic for some peace and safety but he’d chosen to have it instead. He didn’t have the moral high ground to stand on.
“Which is how I know it. Negative emotions are a hazard to society in and of themselves. Add magic that is powered by them and we’re witnessing catastrophe after catastrophe caused by the coven you’re defending.” He wasn’t going to use her own points against her. He’d already stolen her life and her magic.
“If they weren’t necessary, they wouldn’t exist.” Dark magic wouldn’t exist either without purpose but his delusion was far too grand for that to reach through it.
“Are you telling me that I had to go through the...” Valtor swallowed, and then again - all the words he was discarding from fear, “pain I was put through?” He balled his fists and Griffin’s muscles tensed. He needed her alive, not necessarily untouched.
“That’s not what I meant.” How could she tell him he’d deserved to have his body defiled and his heart poisoned with hate? He’d brought on so much pain under the reign of his own. How could she stand to watch that cycle repeat over and over again? “I mean negative emotions in general, not in specific instances. In certain situations it is more appropriate to feel negative emotions. It wouldn’t be right not to feel sad over the loss of someone you care about.”
Valtor looked away again, his hands clasped together in his lap. Whatever he was holding in his white-knuckled grip on himself wasn’t good.
“You would want to be angry at something wrong,” Griffin licked her lips. Finding the similarities between the two of them wasn’t easier for her than it was for him. The song from their car ride was echoing in her head. Their favorite. “Without loneliness you’ll never know you want another’s presence. Fear tells you what you need to reshape to have a better life. Without any of that how can you be human?”
Valtor pounced off the bed, shoulders shaking as he turned his back on her like a wall he raised between them. “There was nothing humanly about Belladonna. She was a monster,” his voice was so low it dove below what she could hear every time he lost a grip on the trembling of it.
“Yes, a monster who happened to be a witch.” He hadn’t shown Griffin much humanity either. It only made him more human as he struggled with the weakness he’d forced her to endure as well. “Not all witches are like that. Haven’t you seen positive emotions in me, anything good at all?” Granted, she hadn’t had any reason to smile since she’d met him but that just made her more human, too, as she pushed through to find some sliver of happiness or at least something to hold on to.
Valtor whipped around, the motion so abrupt that Griffin’s stomach curled in a ball as she held her breath. He was going to crumble in pieces right there in the middle of their hotel room.
“That’s different,” Valtor croaked out, the words coming out as if he was chewing glass while he spoke just to shred them. His eyes were so wide his face had to have changed proportions permanently to accommodate his bewilderment.
“It is because you’ve never spent enough time with a witch to see anything but terror and aggression.” Griffin had to swallow tears. If not for him, then at least for the witches he’d tortured and killed just because of the evil he’d been raised with. “I am capable of all the same emotions that you feel and so are other witches. Maybe not all of them, but we’re not all evil either.” She’d caught him before he’d frozen in his own space of mind again. She had to keep him on that thin edge where she’d gotten him to meet her world. “Anyone who knows you’re a demon would think you’re an abomination, too. But you’re not, are you? You can feel something good.” Whatever sick pleasure or relief he got from murdering was not something she’d count even if it were the first thing coming to mind. But she’d seen him relax as he’d sat in the driver’s seat, had seen him tap his fingers on the steering wheel in tact with the music, had seen him radiate joy when he’d been in his element.
Valtor’s voice was hardly a whisper as his gaze burned into her eyes. “I don’t know. What does your book say?”
Griffin clutched at the pages to keep the book in her lap as she staggered. She’d pushed against the world telling her she was a monster but Valtor had only had the strength to free himself from his abuser, not from the darkness instilled in him as well. “What does your heart say?”
He gave her a soulless chuckle. “Which one? The one I ate or the one that was eaten?” His fingers twitched and closed into his shirt. He had to pry it out of his grip with his other hand to avoid tearing it off to reopen the scar on his chest. “I don’t think either one of them has felt anything good, ever.”
“There’s always a first time, right?” She was a first for him no matter what he said. Their marriage was just a cover but the blade in his hand had been real, and his murderous intent had been as tangible as the shackles on her wrists suppressing her magic. And he’d dropped it before she’d been any use for his mission.
Valtor didn’t say anything but his peace of mind was restored to let him sit back on the bed next to a witch he had to share it with.

I Love Matthew Fairchild aka Incoherent Thoughts about Chain of Iron (2021) by Cassandra Clare
I made one of these rant-rave reviews for SJM's book so check it out if you want, no pressure tho lmao.
Aight so I finished Chain of Iron last night and OMG I HAVE TO YELL like I loved it sooo much like yooo, I have a lot to say. I know the book is new so... beware for spoilers plebs.
Also context: I been reading the Shadowhunter books since I was 12 and I'm 19 now *insert dead emoji face* so yeah, I'm just so happy rn with where the Chronicles have come and the fact that they’re still ongoing *insert uwu face*. I remember when in like 2014-2015 or something when Cassandra Clare teased that Will and Tessa's kids' generation was gonna get a trilogy set in Edwardian London, loosely based on Great Expectations, and holy hell? I think that was perhaps one of the best days of my life considering how much I adore The Infernal Devices (that trilogy really changed the way I see YA literature... don't ask cus I won't shut up about it) (also yes I read TMI and loved it too but there's a “generation gap” between TMI and the other Shadowhunter books stylistically so don't ask me about that either cus I also won't shut up).
Anyway, shoo from here if you want a critical essay on Chain of Iron. I'm not providing that, this is just me raving here for the fun.
Listen... I want the bulk of this to just be two main things: The Matthew Situation, and then all the literary and judeo-christian meta aspects of it.
BUT I ALSO NEED TO TALK ABOUT EVERYTHING ELSE SO FRICK LET'S JUST START WITH THE OBVIOUS SHIT LIKE THE PLOT AND WHATEVER
Okay, the plot and writing and shit, let's get that out of the way:
The WHOLE Jack-the-Ripper-esque ambiance was just sooooo good man wow like I did not expect the book to take this cold turn but it worked so well. There was such a contrast between Jamie and Cordelia's warm little house and then the cold winter and the stabbings and shit and it felt like a nice little callback to the actual Ripper phenomenon that preceded them and a nod to the Whitechapel Fiend story from Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy.
Bitch OFC that whole thing with Wayland was a set-up like nawww that was too easy to spot and I get why Cordelia feels like shit about it.
Dawg Lucie was just the Among Us imposter here in that my girl was just venting and sneaking around with dead people and I was like nooooo girl run, don't deal with Fade this is a set-up THINK ABOUT JULES LUCIE THAT'S LIKE YO GREAT-GRANDSON *sobs* but yeah anyway my girl has death powers she gonna kill some bitches next book.
You see that confrontation between Lilith and Belial? MASTERPIECE DIALOGUE like this was the point within which I was just like "yo is this the book of Genesis or a YA Fantasy novel" like when Lilith said "I may have been cast out but I did not fall" like??????????????????? I YELLED she did not have to END Belial like that. What a bad bitch.
More on Lilith and Belial... "You, who brought nations into darkness? Shall I finally be able to tell the infernal realms you have gone mad, lost even the image of the Creator." HAHAHHAHAHA SHE SAID "YO BELIAL GO GET SOME THERAPY AND GET OFF MY ASS" LIKE??????
Ughhhh yasss Clare has improved writing diverse characters in this book compared to in The Dark Artifices in my opinion... I'm not gonna expand on it cus ain't nobody got time for that but like, I enjoyed how she wove Persian poetry and tales into the story and the way in which she writes Cordelia and Alistair. They're not caricatures of Persian people but rather multi-faceted beings who also happen to be Persian and I appreciate that. Also, Alistair and Thomas and Anna and Ariadne were just so fun and interesting to read as coupbles but also as individuals. She really higlighted diversity in a very natural manner. All I need is a hijabi character and I’ll die a happy woman lmao.
The level of META man like the references to Classics and art (I swear, she might have compared Matthew to angels out of Caravaggio AND Rosetti AND Boticelli paintings and I Am Living For It) and just all the quotes from holy books and shit omg I love it here like you really feel catapulted into the time period, she draws reference to external art and philosophy so well and I feel like she upped the notch on it in this book (didn’t know that was possible but it was the prose is BEAUTIFUL, archaic, but not pretentiously so). No, like the characters live in their OWN worlds of literature and art and history in the way we are living in THEIRS. They quote Wilde and Milton while we'll quote Clare. It's awesome.
This is an unusually structuralist take even from me but: I like the way the milieu social of the book, i.e., the high society Edwardian circles and their values, have a direct influence on the plot. James and Cordelia got married because society’s values essentially forced them to, not a demon. Cordelia abandons Jamie at the end of Iron because her shame as a woman in society and fear for her reputation made her, not a demon. Thomas and Alistair can't be together solely because of how Alistair tarnished the reputation of the Fairchilds and Lightwoods by using the horror of infidelity against them. Issues relating to marriage, gender roles, etc, stemming DIRECTLY from the time period rule the sequence of events to the same degree as the epic fantasy aspects (demons, Princes of Hell, the lore itself) do and I LOVE that dear God above.
OKAY THE GOOD SHIT LET US TALK ABOUT CHARACTERS AND SHIPS (N.B. but imma discuss Matthew and the Fairstairs situation separately below this portion):
Alistair's redemption arc: No, cus Alistair's redemption arc is honestly amazing. He really did change and it's not like his betterment as a person was linked to any one heroic deed but rather he simply decided he wanted to be better especially for his family and he decided to become a proper protective son, a caring brother, and an amiable friend. He fully owned up to his Malfoy tendencies and apologized without expecting forgiveness. He shows how he cares in the little ways and omg it's so sweet and tender. I really do want him to love himself now and be embraced by Matthew especially and the rest of the Thieves.
Dawg Lucie and Jesse are so funny to me like it's so hilarious how this girl fell in love with a whole ass ghost that no one else knows about like HHAHA. Are Lucie and Jesse my ult ship ever? Nah, but it's nothing to do with Clare, it's just that their relationship happened pretty quick and feels quite like something epicly romantic that Lucie herself would write. I just like slow burn and friends-to-lovers the most from Clare. To be honest part of me just wanted Lucie to not have a romantic arc all together but like, it's all good, I'm not complaining.
Okay Grace- like yooooooooooo I never hated her yunno. She has been abused and isolated all her life. It's not that she is a bad person, but rather that she does not know what being a person even entails. Can't even say she's a “doll” of a person cus she's never even been pampered like one by her family. I really started understanding her motivations since when they gave us her half-childhood with Jesse. I want better for her but cmon can she REALLY be saved???
GRACE X CHRISTOPHER *pretends to be shocked*... Okay, sometime in the middle of the Dark Artifices series some big brain put together a very thorough family tree of the families and like, it clearly showed that Grace and Christopher got married so like, lmfaooooo, I knew this was coming one way or another, but the journey to this ship is more important than the destination. Like in a way Christopher is such a cute baby lamb that it makes sense he'd end up being immune to her Grace-ness when he's just a cute little Einstein boiii. Like this is just so funny to me cus he's so oblivious to social conventions while she makes the milieu social her entire life so OFC it's gonna work. Like, this is such a worlds-colliding trope like just Give It To Me.
James and Grace - aw mannn Jamie just had me fricking wanting to hit a wall every two seconds cus like yooooooo every single time I think he and Cordelia are gonna stop being emotionally-constipated spouses, Jamie says some kinda shit like "omg me and Daisy are just friends uwu" like DO I NEED TO HIT YOU?????????? See I can't blame him for not slamming the door on Grace's face even tho he totes should- Jamie is so cerebral and kind that even if Grace wasn't using the enchantment on him, I think he would always be soft for her even if it isn't in a romantic way. There's just so much miscommunication cus like he said "Thank God" when she broke off the engagement with Charles and lowkey embraced her but it also wasn't his fault cus it wasn't even romantic BUT OFC IT LOOKED HORRIBLE TO CORDELIA like James literally never told the woman at least once that he loved her so OFC she thought she was back to square one with him dear God above what a mess. Not his fault, but she DID set down one rule for him: don’t cheat with Grace. And yeah even tho he hasn’t properly cheated, it must FEEL horrible to her cus she’s just been enduring the pain of their unrequeted love for so long :((
See imma just say it but if Cordelia thought that James didn't love Grace then she def would have confessed to him about her feelings right but like James, on the other hand, was delaying his own romantic confession cus he was BEING EMOTIONALLY CONSTIPATED and I can't even say the bracelet was solely to blame cus like my boi was just being so difficult omg I believe he should be lightly spanked by his three parents aka Will, Tessa and Jem *cries*.
Cordelia is such a MOM like she's so mature and stable and her self-preservation instinct? OFF THE CHARTS I love this woman like James definitely treated her well as a hubby but like I JUST WANTED HER TO HAVE CLOSURE ABOUT SOMETHING and boy oh boy she did get that closure she got it good but not from the person she expected in the LEAST *hehe* *pelican screeching*... like Lucie was being sus with the whole ghost business and James was being just, quite a case, dealing with Grace and Belial right and I don't blame them at all for their secrecy and shit but her FATHER DIED and her friends were hiding a lot from her so in a way she turned to Alistair for help but he could only do so much cus of his own pain (she couldn't even talk to her mom cus she's pregnant and she doesn't wanna stress her right) and then there was this emotional block between her and Jamie, Lucie was often absent and conspiring with the dead... the last person remaining was HIM (imma discuss this soon), but yeah my heart just went OUT to her cus she's tryna save herself and her family and she just doesn't know what to do. That's why I love the way her mom told her to stop holding herself back for others and live her own life. Like Cordelia grew on me so much cus in Gold she undoubtedly was a strange Elizabeth Bennet-wallflower hybrid and I... do not usually get attached to wallflowers but in Iron I feel like I finally understood that she was just tryna be unproblematic and self-preserving all along and nottt put her family and friends in a tough situation.... she reminds me of my mom personality-wise so yeah I’m totally rooting for her now that her *situation* in the past seems clearer.
Anna, Thomas and Matthew are such a SQUAD lmfaooooo like united in their gayness they'd be so unstoppable.
Will and Tessa are the most in-love of all the in-loves in this story and I respect that so much.
I lost a year to my life every time the romance between James and Cordelia got cockblocked. Like they were MARRIED and I thought they were gonna at least sleep next to each other at least once BUT NO James couldn't take a hint omg I'm actually gonna eat my fist and sob (but in retrospect, I think this serves a bigger purpose in terms of the narrative structure i.e. the interruption of all the spicy James and Cordelia action serves a bigger purpose which I think brings me to my next section, *exhale*)
Welcome to the Matthew Fairchild Enthusiast Club (this section is me talking out loud; it makes no sense):
bitch.
LISTEN TO ME LISTEN WELL I LOVE THIS BOY SO MUCH IMMA SCREAM I REALLY AM GONNA SCREAM MY FIST IS LITERALLY IN MY MOUTH *BACKFLIPS OFF THE ROOF WITH LANA DEL REY PLAYING*
Okay like where to BEGIN I think the Shadowhunter boy who I'm most attracted to is Julian while the one I love the most is Will but I think I see myself in Matthew the most. Like ever since that first story where the Thieves all met at the Academy then got expelled, I think that I just KNEW Matthew was destined to be epic. Plus the whole Wilde obsession? I’m no libertine myself but I just love his chaos and passion for life.
NO CUS HE'S SO WITTY AND SWEET AND EPIC AND YET SO SECRETIVE AND DEAR GOD ABOVE AHHHHH WILL HE SURPASS JULIAN FOR ME??? Ion even know but this is just sodjsgdwsdygyegydgef
Hear me out but I said after finishing Gold last March that I wanted this book to be Matthew's healing arc right so halfway into the book when I realized that we weren't getting all that good healing arcing I was confused just cus I thought it seemed natural to address all of his alcohol issues and sadness by now. LITTLE DID I KNOW CASSIE WAS SETTING UP A WHOLE OTHER ARC WITH HIM THAT I WOULD HAVE NEVER GUESSED WTH.
At first I thought Matthew didn't have feelings for anyone at all, and if he DID develop feelings unexpectedly, I fricking thought that maybe he's catching feelings for James, if anyone??? I mean, I did have some suspicions about Matthew from the get-go: like he's so secretive and as readers we think we know everything there is to know about him since we were all privy to the truth potion incident in his short story right BUT NO I GOT PLAYED AND I DESERVE IT SO BADDDDDD.
Listen I hadn't shipped him and Cordelia simply because I never thought it in the realm of possibility but it MAKES SENSE as a ship... think about it: he never says what he feels, he flirts with her like he does with EVERYONE, he is kind to her in the way he is with EVERYONE. Really, Matthew is shippable with everyone, doesn’t matter if they’re taken cus that’s just what his Matthewnes allows for ya feel. There is such a beautiful irony that CORDELIA herself did not see this coming. Even the little teasers and hints in Gold have only NOW started making sense to me likejhss. I just felt like the hints in book 1 did not indicate to me that Matthew really harbored real romantic feelings for Daisy. I thought he was upset that James and Cordelia were being fakes, not a developing CRUSH on the woman fgs.
Not to mention that you usually sense a ship building when the emotional connection or sexual tension between the characters is made clearer but to me their FRIENDSHIP grew right but it didn’t feel like Cordelia was thought that she liked him or he liked her so that means me and Cordelia are clowns *together* 😤
Okay I was lowkey having SUSPICIONS but I immediately shut them down right... like firstly when he took her to the White Horse in his car and she went OFF and OFF and off about how she felt free for the first time? I thought Cassie was just tryna develop Cordelia's self-liberation arc through Matthew there. Heck, I didn't even think ANYTHING of it when Matthew confession to Cordelia about the "truth potion" incident at all cus I was like they're FRIENDS??? BUT now it's adding up now...
See when they were at the inn place and he was telling her that she doesn't in the least seem like a 100 year-old married woman? I was like hmmmm he's so sweet but why did Cassie phrase it like that like??? When Cordelia later reiterated that she thought Matthew's flirting was “meaningless”?? I was like hmmm kinda SUS tho. And then when he and James had their fight over the way Jamie kissed Grace like again I thought he was just like? ion know? mad at James for it but I didn't think he was in LOVE with Cordelia??? So I immediately put aside my slight suspicions. The probability that he had a crush on James at that point seemed more likely to me.
BUT THEN it started hitting me that every time Matthew drank, even before he explained his issue with the truth potion, that Cordelia would note it, she would worry about him, she would think of her father which seemed so poetic to me, history repeating itself and all that but this time you can FIX it??? Yeah, but again I didn't think the L WORD would be involved man???
Now imma sound like a delulu shipper here but it just makes sense they would develop feelings logically- reason being that it definitely is possible based on the way Cassie set up the story, like there's a combination of little “friend things” that can turn this into a proper ship: Matthew rescues Cordelia in the ballroom when Grace captures James' attention in Gold. Cordelia sees her father in Matthew all the time but knows now she has a chance to be there for him in the way she couldn't have been there for Elias (classic “history repeats itself” trope, she doesn't want Matthew drinking in Paris like dhshghdfhdhch). Cordelia tastes freedom for the first time when driving with Matthew. Matthew caught James and Cordelia making out in the room and was pissed but not even HE properly knew why then??? Umm, when she thinks James is forreal cheating with Grace on her she subconsciously goes to Matthew??? I also found it funny just how every intimate marital moment between her and James got interrupted somehow. Like, it's as if the narrative is just a living force REFUSING to let James and Cordelia as a ship be consecrated. Heck, every time Matthew is scantily clothed Cordelia notes it. LITTLE CRUMBS I TELL YOU LITTLE CRUMBS.
I tell you when Cordelia showed up to Matthew's flat I thought they were gonna f*ck as friends but I got SOMETHING EVEN BETTER SOMEHOW
THEY ARE GOING TO PARIS LA BELLE EPOQUE PARIS THE PARIS OF DREAMS AND ART LIKE??? FRICKKKKK I DID NOT SEE THIS COMING AT ALLLL MAN? I deadass thought the story would be restrained to the UK but like it MAKES SENSE the trope subversion MAKES SENSE.
“In Paris, with you, I will not need to forget.” SHITTRGEGGGDG
BUT CORDELIA LOVES JAMES TOO LIKE I CAN'T DENY THAT... where are we GOING with this like Matthew wouldn't lie about his feelings and yet Cassie wouldn't give us Matthew and Cordelia crumbs to only end it in the next book immediately for her to just ditch him for James. I mean she was clearly holding back on fleshing out James and Cordelia as a ship for this but to WHAT END??? Daisy feels wild and free with Matthew and she feels warm at home warm with James. I can’t advocate for the sinking of ANY ship here.
Imma say what we're all thinking: Is she gonna give us a Will x Jem x Tessa type situation where Cordelia gets both of them cus I'm not strong enough for this but I also think it'd be really funny if James gets a surprise bi awakening in the next books and then we get POLY even tho this would never happen, it’s actually impossible, because of the whole parabatai thing.
Listen I ship Cordelia and Matthew much more than Cordelia and James, not that I dislike James in any way tho. It's just: Matthew is so unrestrained and she's so composed. They seem like an unlikely pair so it makes sense that they hit harder for me. James and Cordelia have such similar personalities but I ALSO don't ship James with Grace at all so like?? Poly would be... ideal... but it can’t happen especially cus they are fricking parabatai... a Will-Jem-Tessa situation seems more likely but mannnn ion know what to expect. I just want FAIRSTAIRS to have their moment in Paris. I mean James and Matthew clearly don't abhor each other for this.
Take everything I say with several grains of salt, take everything I say with the whole Dead Sea actually, cus I damn well know that Matthew is so flirty and whatnot that I’d have shipped him with anyone in their little circle but now that she set him up with Cordelia it all feels so right?? I have wanted this man in a good relationship since he walked onto the page in Nothing But Shadows so-
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
I can't believe Cassia duped me like this omg, Matthew is gonna have his healing arc in Paris with Cordelia by his side like- THIS IS ALL I HAVE WANTED AND SO MUCH MORE. Question to yall btw: are you all as surpised at Fairstairs as me or did yall see it coming all along like smart people? Am I a lone clown? 🥺
BRUH okay criticisms of CC?:
Lmfao a part of me feels like I GOTTA say something bad about CC or the book but honestly I have no objective complaints about it as of now. Am I saying that it’s the PEAK of Young Adult literature and Urban Fantasy? I mean, I make no such claims tbh. I’m not here to be critical when I read as a hobby and when CC’s writing makes me happy regardless of how flawed some people see it.
Okay what next?
So like I’m excited for the adult high fantasy she’s releasing in the fall and whatever other works she might be releasing outside of Chain of Gold within the Chronicles.
As for TLH itself? Man I’m just VIBING like I suspect I will reread Chain of Iron soon and maybe one of the anthologies just because I am happy that this series actually happened after me waiting like 6 years for it when it was just a concept: a Dickensian retelling filled with poetry and culture and history and the conventions I so loved in TID at age 12. This is all I been wanting tbh. I’m just enjoying watching this series come to fruition for it to inspire and transform me in some way. I feel like in a way my coming-of-age aligns with that of these specific characters yet I ALSO feel like I raised Jamie since infancy. Wack.
MATTHEW AND CORDELIA IN FRANCE LA BELLE EPOQUE TO BE EXACT IMMA CRY I DID NOT SEE THIS COMING AND AHHHHHH. ALSO WILL AND JAMIE GOING TO CORNWALL TO GET LUCIE AND MAYBE BOND I LOVE WILL. HE WAS ONE OF MY DILF AWAKENINGS AT AGE 12 AND NOW HE’S HERE AGAIN IMMA CRY. I WANNA SEE MATTHEW GET HAPPY. AHHH.
Ending with a fun quote: “In the wise words of someone or other, there are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamt of in your philosophy, Maurice.” 😉

I did it y’all, I saw the movie. I have already tried to write out a regular review, but it ended up being the size of a small novel so I am going to go with a pros and cons list instead. There will be movie spoilers, so if you are still waiting to watch and don’t want it ruined yet, don’t look any further. If you just want an idea of my general opinion, I will go ahead and say that the cons list is much longer than the pros.
Pros:
- Ben and Cillian’s relationship was very well done. There was a lot more Cillian in the movie than in the books, which is another good thing. There was plenty of time to show how much Ben and Cillian cared about each other, and Cillian’s death scene was actually very sweet and sad.
- Todd can’t read.
- Todd and Viola do not ever kiss.
- Viola was actually done pretty well. Her story and reason for being on the planet are different, which I will explain later, but she still responds to her situations in a way that Viola probably would.
- The Noise looks very cool. The sound part isn’t always there, only when someone is thinking a very specific thought. I was kind of expecting there to be a constant overlay, as it is called the “Noise,” but in general I do think that the Noise was well done.
- There is a Spackle in the movie, even though it is missing an arm (I guess you could technically say that there is less than one Spackle). But I actually like this detail because it shows some of what the Spackle had to endure from their side of the war.
- I’m really not sure how I’m putting Manchee’s death scene as one of the “pros,” but it was one of the only scenes that actually felt like Chaos Walking.
- Also, Manchee was killed because Aaron strangled him underwater. I personally would rather see that than hear the sound of a dog’s back snapping.
Cons:
- Todd and Mayor Prentiss already know and like each other. Mayor Prentiss is impressed by Todd’s Noise (after he sends that giant Noise snake at Davy), and Todd takes pride in this. He seems to like Mayor Prentiss’s company more than Ben and Cillian’s.
- The story of the new settlers is completely different. Apparently the main convoy could have arrived at any moment, they were just waiting for Viola’s word to land on the planet. If she had not been able to communicate with them, they would have left her behind and moved on to the next system.
- Because Viola has the option to leave the planet, she wants to communicate with the convoy so that they can come get her and leave. There is no plot about how she is meant to fix the planet so that they can all live there.
- Also, her parents did not die in the crash. They died from an illness on the spaceship years before, and the people that did die in the crash were just random unnamed scouts with Viola. I have absolutely no idea why they made this change.
- The ages of the characters are never explicitly said, so because Todd Hewitt is a 13 year old character, Tom Holland’s full naked body from the back was not necessary.
- Also Todd bathes with all of his clothes on? But takes them completely off to swim? I get that being raised in Prentisstown can make a boy a little untraditional, but that is not at all how Todd Hewitt was written.
- Todd just makes me uncomfortable in general. He is overthinking this romance he wants with Viola, which she does not appreciate.
- Todd is obsessed with the thought of kissing Viola. Viola is obsessed with not kissing Todd. I don’t know when she started liking him, she just decided that it was funny one day and started teasing him about it. Then I guess they became friends.
- Wilf does not exist, even though he is cast on IMDb.
- Animal Noise does not exist.
- Aaron has a completely normal face the entire time. He is generally not scary, he just has louder and redder Noise.
- Also they only call him Preacher for the first half of the movie, then they finally decide that his name is Aaron.
- In the scene where Todd is supposed to kill the Spackle, Viola tells him to stop and he just... does. The Spackle gets up and leaves like nothing happened, even though Todd stabbed him multiple times.
- Todd in general doesn’t seem to have a problem with murder. Mayor Prentiss tells him that he is not a killer one time, but nothing has happened up to that point to prove his statement.
- Todd and Viola happen upon the ship that the original settlers landed in over twenty years ago, and the communications equipment is fully functional.
- Ben and Mayor Prentiss are both supposedly dead by the end.
- Todd beats Mayor Prentiss by showing him a bunch of Prentisstown women in his Noise, and Mayor Prentiss suddenly feels guilty for killing them. Viola then knocks him down several stories with a stick.
- So the big fight at the end was between Todd, Viola, and Mayor Prentiss, not with Aaron. Aaron conveniently shows up while Viola is sending a message to her ship, and she conveniently sets him on fire with the fire box.
- They pretty much went with a Monsters of Men ending because Todd gets shot. Except he’s completely fine because the new settlers arrive and heal him.
- Viola decides that she is going to stay on the planet with Todd, even though she had the option not to and Todd’s thoughts toward her are very awkward. I would have been gone so fast if it was me.
Overall:
My expectations for this movie were not very high. The books are perfect as is, and I don’t think there is a way to put this story on screen in a way that satisfies everybody. I’m glad we’ll always have the books to go to, and I hope that anyone who watched the movie without reading the books was able to enjoy it. I’m glad I watched the movie, even if I’m not thrilled with the way it turned out. If anything, it has solidified my own image of the story because my own interpretation is all that I’ll ever really need. I still love this series, and the movie cannot change that.

Please Fix the Story pt 2 - Zombie Apocalypse
Hey everyone, here is a continuation to the the fix it fic Reverse harem short story I posted a few days ago!
Part one linked here.
(FYI although it is a different world, the main character as well as Liam are the same people. As stated at the end of the first part, Liam cannot bring along any memories from prior worlds)
Enjoy!
__________________________
GRRRR!
I looked around at my surroundings as I arrived in the new world, trying to catch my bearings.
Broken down buildings, abandoned cars, no people around and zombies about to attack… yep, definitely a post-apocalyptic setting.
I was in the middle of a city road, surrounded on all sides by tall, buildings with shattered windows, exposed beams and hanging wires. The hairs on the back of my neck stood up as I felt the unsettling atmosphere slowly settle over me. There was a strange silence to the world, the absence of people talking, cars honking, electronics beeping. There was just the wind, my breathing and silence…
GRRR.
…and the growls of the twenty or so zombies slowly approaching me.
I climbed up on an abandoned car, trying to catch my bearings. The movement tore at the four or five wounds that were scattered over my body, forcing out a groan of pain.
Multiple bruises, possible broken ribs, several cuts to arms and legs that still have broken bits of glass in them… it’s like I’ve been in a bar brawl.
It was always frustrating before I could accept the memories of my character and the world setting. I had no idea where I was, how I had gotten here, and more importantly what my mission was.
First things first, I need something to defend myself with.To my pleasant surprise, a quick survey of the area revealed a backpack that looked full and a sword resting on the ground nearby.
I jumped down, biting my lip to hold back a cry of pain at the motion, and quickly pulled the backpack on, unsheathing the sword and looking at it. It looked like something out of a museum, with an ornate gold plated hilt and a long, slightly curved blade. The weight and length were just at the limit of what this current body could bear, and I gave the sword a few practice swings with a grin.
Wonder how my character got a hold of a sword… this body doesn’t seem like one that practices fencing.
Putting my questions out of my mind, I held up my sword, centering my thoughts and bringing my heart into focus, just as I had trained in the past.
Fortunately, one of the previous story worlds I had lived through since the day I woke up without memories had been an assassin novel. The mission had been difficult; protecting the assassin’s guild from destruction after the hero left them behind to chase the heroine on an adventure. The author had regretted destroying his beloved family and guild members, and abandoned the novel. So I was tasked with spending years training weapons skills in the group, finally fighting against the rogue gang that attacked and defending the hero’s family in his place. Completing that mission had taken seven years in total, but  on the bright side I had gained a good amount of fighting experience.
I closed my hand over the familiar weight of a sword in my palm. Time to start a new world. At the thought I felt a pang of loneliness and couldn’t help but close my eyes and smile bitterly. How is it that I’ve spent years and years in some of these worlds, and they still didn’t manage to move my heart as much as four weeks spent in a silly high school romance novel world?
“Liam.” I whispered quietly, opening my eyes with a sigh. He had so easily bypassed my defenses, making me care about him to the point that I had hesitated about moving on to the next world.
I have to keep moving forward, it’s my only hope of recovering my memories and going home.
Grrrr.
Thinking about the world and people I had left behind had depressed my mood, but thankfully, an outlet for my emotions had just presented itself on a silver platter.
“Time for some emotional therapy… by killing zombies.” With a  smile I put away all stray thoughts and feelings, suppressed any sensation of pain or fear. There was only me, my sword, and the targets to destroy.
I was ready.
Silent, I sprang forward, my sword raised.
My first slash cut off the nearest zombies arm, the sword slicing through the rotten meat and brittle bones with ease.
Thud.
The arm hit the ground with a dull sound. The zombie’s wide, lidless eyes stared down at the detached limb for a few moments, as if confused, before turning back towards me with renewed energy.
GRRR.
Right, undead. Cutting off limbs won’t do much. So let’s try decapitation.
Ducking under the zombie’s remaining arm, I straightened up behind the monster and aimed this time for the neck.
This time both head and body fell to the ground, and became still.
Success!
The rotten blood and flesh dripped onto my hand from the stained blade. Disgusted, I swung the sword back and forth, which only served to scatter the remnants in the air, releasing a horrific smell. I gagged, forcing myself to breathe through my mouth and leaping at the nearest zombie with a snarl.
“This is so gross!”
SLICE! Two zombies fell to the ground on either side of me.
“I hate this world so much!”
Swish! Slice! THUD!
“WHAT IF THERE’S NO RUNNING WATER AND I CAN’T SHOWER?!!!”
A zombie’s growl cut off suddenly as the head flew out into the distance.
“I don’t even know what the mission is, but it already SUCKS!”
Letting out my frustration, I took out the remaining zombies, standing in place in a puddle of goo, my breaths coming in an out with a harsh gasping sound as my out of shape body tried to catch up with the practiced movements I had just put it through. My heart beat rapidly in my chest, breathing caused sharp pains as my broken ribs protested and made their presence known.
I was injured, I was tired, and I was covered in zombie guts.
I want to go home.
But I didn’t know where home was.
Feeling sorry for myself, I sat down on the ground, pulling out my phone and checking the mission.
“This better be a quick one.”
As I pulled up the familiar screen the first thing I noticed was a notification.
**** CONGRATULATIONS! YOU HAVE LEVELED UP!****
“… Pardon?”
As you continue to complete world missions in an efficient and satisfactory manner, you will gain experience and level up the mission system, allowing you additional benefits and assistance.
A small experience bar glowed at the bottom of the notification, with only a sliver of the space filled in and a large number “2” next to it.
“It took TWELVE worlds for me to get to level 2?!” I fought the desire to throw my phone with rage, and continued to read.
With your new level, you have unlocked key character descriptions and world map in the mission app! As well as… other benefits!
“…” I stared at the screen silently. Why do I feel like this thing is just messing with me now?I’m just going to ignore this. It’s too rage inducing.
I clicked through the message and moved on to the mission description.
**** NEW WORLD: WAR OF THE UNDEAD ****
This post-apocalyptic zombie infested story follows Eric, a young man with a military background and the will to fight as he survives the end of the world. By his side is the love of his life Hannah, who holds his hand through the uneasy tides of crumbling social structures, horrifying monsters and evil villains.
Complaints about the story were rampant as the heroine of the novel was deemed “useless” with no discernable skills, often getting kidnapped and wreaking havoc for Eric to clean up after. Unable to balance the two main leads, the author finally gave up and never finished the story, leading to the world’s instability and eventual destruction.
The Author’s wish, and your mission, consists of two parts: First, help the heroine develop into a well-rounded character, able to stand on her own two feet instead of a two dimensional plot device designed to give the hero problems to solve. Second, help humanity establish a good foundation for a new society, leaving the story on a high note with hope for defending against the zombies.
**** DO YOU ACCEPT THIS MISSION?****
I glared at my screen, desperately wishing for a “decline” option.
HELP HUMANITY ESTABLISH A FOUNDATION?!!! HOW LONG IS THAT GOING TO TAKE??
I let out a sad moan, leaning against the broken car and staring up at the dull grey sky with a hopeless gaze.
How long do I have to live in this world and go without a hot shower?
I clicked Accept, my finger stabbing the screen angrily, accomplishing nothing other than a sore fingertip. The memories of my character rushed in, the splitting pain and confusion passing quickly as I accepted them with ease.
“… Well, I guess it could be worse.”
I was a small side character in this story, the spoiled princess of the hero’s group that caused trouble. Upon joining up with their team, she would constantly complain, wishing for luxury and pampering in a world where survival was the only priority. She was tolerated as she had brought with her a large bag of supplies from her family’s mansion, as well as an antique sword that she had taken off the wall as she left, but the goodwill of the hero and his friends quickly ran dry in the face of her spoiled personality and increasingly ridiculous demands.
Finally after several years and multiple fights, her character was kidnapped along with Hannah, the heroine. The hero was forced to choose one to save, and selected his loved one without hesitation. Even at the end her character believed she was too important to be killed, threatening her captors right up until they threw her into a pit of zombies.
It seemed as if I had started this world right after my character had abandoned her first team. They had gotten into a fight with a roaming bandit group, (which explained my current injuries) during which my character had escaped, leaving her teammates behind.
As the story moved on she would then meet up with the hero and his camp, joining and staying alongside them until her untimely demise.
Unfortunately it looks like one of the hero’s companions was a friend of this character, which will make it difficult to explain the large difference in the personality… Rubbing my headthoughtfully as I considered the problem, I finally gave up and sighed. Oh well, the apocalypse changes people, they’ll just have to accept it.
The phone in my hand vibrated once more, with surprise I glanced down at the new alert.
With your level up, you are able to change your character’s name to one of your choosing. All characters’ memories will be adjusted accordingly.
**** Select a character name? ****
I struggled internally with a sudden childish desire to name my character “ass-licker” or something equally stupid, just for the chance to hear everyone have to say it seriously.
But if I was going to spend a few years in this world… that would get old fast.
I slowly typed out a name, a small smile tugging at the corner of my lips.
“Blaire.”
My favorite world so far.A memory I wanted to keep with me.
I wonder what happened to Liam after I left? Before I could consider that thought too closely, a panicked scream broke the silence of the city.
“HELP!”
Following the distressed sounds, I entered a nearby building. In a large open area filled with broken concrete and other debris, a single young man was cornered by three zombies. He held a metal bar in his hands, which he was swinging wildly, barely keeping the monsters at bay. They were slowly crowding him into a corner, but seemed unable to reach any closer. The man continued swinging, all the while a constant stream of half-intelligible cursing and complaints escaping from his mouth.
“Damned traitor…. Make him regret… snap his neck… no that’s too good for him! … boiling… oil… funnel…!”
For all that this is a life threatening situation, why do I get the feeling he seems… like he’s having fun?
Shaking off the wayward thought, I rushed in, sword drawn, striking the zombies down with a few swings. As their heads tumbled to the ground, I kneeled down, using their shredded clothes to carefully clean the blade. As I looked up, I saw the startled face of the man I saved, and felt a moment of panic.
“Liam?”
After staring silently a few moments, I shook my head sadly
It wasn’t him.
He was older, taller, with a slimmer build. His hair, though a similar dark shade, was longer and roughly cut. His face was not the one in my memories, with a slimmer nose and a more pointed chin, but his eyes… they were the exact same shade of dark blue as Liam in the previous world. It was the eyes that had initially caused me to call out, the amused light in them so familiar it was as if he were still right in front of me.
But he wasn’t. I had left that world, and therefore Liam, behind.
“I’m sorry, I mistook you for someone else.”
The man shook his head, his face still pale with shock. “Don’t be sorry! You saved my life!”  He walked forward, holding out a trembling hand to shake. “I’m so glad you showed up when you did!”
I took his hand, trying to smile comfortingly. “Happy to help. Are you going to be okay? How’d you end up here all alone?”
“I got separated from my… friends.” He looked at me closely. “You’re such a strong person, I would have died without you!  I know I’m weaker than you, and might be a burden but… would you… be willing to let me tag along until we get to camp?”
Poor guy, he still looks terrified.I patted him on the shoulder. “Of course.”
He sighed with relief. “Thank you. You’re my hero!”
I laughed at that. “Just call me Blaire.”
“I’m William! But you can call me Liam.”
“Liam?” I paused, unable to hold back from asking.  “I’m sorry… but… have we met before?”
“Hmm… Unfortunately no, I would have definitely remembered you. But perhaps we were fated to meet?” His eyes were clear as he spoke, without any recognition. I frowned.
It can’t be the same person… but he’s just as weird as Liam from the other world, that’s for sure. Unable to shake the sense of familiarity, I sheathed my sword and gestured for him to follow.
“Let’s go.”
“Of course, savior of my life! I’ll follow you to the ends of the earth!”
“… Just to the camp is fine.”
As we stepped out into the street we were immediately confronted by the sight of a large group of tough-looking, scarred men, each carrying multiple weapons. As I tensed up, my hand on my sword hilt, the closest man in the group spotted us, his eyes lighting up with excitement.
“BOSS! You’re still alive!”
I glanced back at Liam, who looked mildly annoyed.
“Boss! We killed the traitor and brought back the weapons he stole from you!”
Tossing out a duffel bag, the zipper was open enough to spot multiple guns, grenades and other deadly weapons.
“…”
“…”
We all stared at the bag in silence for a few moments.
“Boss?” I finally asked.
He gave an awkward grin. “It’s just a friendly nickname.”
“So I’m guessing you won’t need my protection on the way to the nearest camp.” Feeling mildly disappointed, I stepped away, preparing to leave. Only to pause at Liam’s panicked shout.
“Wait, no!” He stepped closer, waving his arms frantically. “I definitely need your protection! These guys are just joking! I’m actually quite a weakling, and desperately need someone strong like you to look after me.”
“What are you saying boss?” One of the goons interrupted. “You’re probably the most deadly man alive…”
THUD
A stone flew through the air, striking the man between the eyes, and knocking him to the ground.
“Shut. Up.” Liam hissed,
“OUCH! That hurt!”
“Now you tell this beautiful woman who saved my life and has promised to protect me how weak and helpless I am!”
The large muscular men all turned towards me, terror in their eyes.
“Boss is the weakest!”
“Definitely weak!”
“He needs protection!”
“He’d die without you!”
“…” I gave Liam a look. Do you really think I’d buy this?
His response was a shameless smile. “Don’t worry, I won’t drag you down! I’ll cook for you!”
“…”
“Run errands!”
“…”
“Do housework!”
I finally spoke up. “Really? You’d do all that?”
“Yes, I…”
“You can’t expect the Boss to act like a servant!!” One of the men burst out angrily, only to fly back as another stone struck him in the face. Another burly, scarred thug took his place.
“Ahem. What my friend meant to say is, Boss is highly skilled in all of these tasks. He’s great husband material!”
Liam gave the man a thumbs up. “Shark, you’re a smart fellow. You’ve just been promoted to my new right hand man!”
“Thanks Boss!”
“Now take care of things while my life savior and hopefully future wife escorts me back!” He grabbed the duffel bag, offering the contents to me before choosing a small handgun and a grenade for himself and handing the rest to Shark.
The man took the remaining weapons with a terrifying smile. “Definitely!” With a sharp whistle, he and the other men quickly turned around and ran away, dragging the injured man who had protested Liam taking on cleaning duties behind them.
“…” I watched this all with confusion. How did the title of future wife get added on to a simple request to escort him to camp?I almost told him to go away, but hesitated. Faced with his almost puppy-like look of anticipation I swallowed the words I was about to say, helplessly turning back in the direction of the hero’s camp. “Let’s go.”
__________________________
We traveled together for a few days, and I found Liam to be an entertaining companion. At each stop he would light a fire, cook a meal, and arrange the camp. Any offers to help were met with stiff resistance.
“You’re the one doing me the favor.” He answered once with a smile. “I’m just trying to support you!”
“…”
“You know…” He added nervously. “If you think that I’m useful… I’d be happy to work for you full time in exchange for your protection.”
“…”
“For example, if we got married it would be super convenient to bring me along as your support husband.”
I sighed quietly, rubbing my head. “You know we’ve only known each other three days right?”
“The great thing about that concern is that it becomes less relevant the longer we’re together!” He grinned briefly, before putting on a serious expression.
“You asked me once if we met before… and even though I know we haven’t I can’t shake the feeling that I know you. As if there’s a voice shouting from the depths of my soul, telling me that if I lose you I’ll regret it forever, but if I can stay by your side I’ll be the happiest man alive.”
I couldn’t help but shake my head. He reminds me so much of Liam spouting his minion nonsense. But if he’s the same person… how did he follow me here?
“By the way… if you thought that sounded poetic, I would like to add ‘well-spoken’ and ‘artistic’ to the lists of attractive traits that I bring to the table as a potential husband or even just a good lackey.”
“…” Let’s just ignore him and get to camp as soon as possible.
__________________________
We arrived at the camp. Fortunately our path had been fairly clear, we met very few zombies on our way. As we walked up to the camp entrance, and attractive man and woman met us, their expressions somewhat guarded.
“Who are you and why are you here?” The man called out.
I paused a good distance away to avoid seeming to threatening, and studied him closely. He looked to be in his mid twenties, with close-cropped hair and classically handsome features. He had a gun at his hip, and a knife close to his hand, obviously ready to respond to any danger.
Smells like a male lead.
I held up my hands, showing that they were empty of weapons and tried to appear friendly.
“I’m Blaire. I’ve recently split from another roaming group and was hoping to join your camp here.” I carefully put my backpack of supplies on the ground and opened it, showing off the contents. “I’ll share some of my supplies. I’m also decent with a sword, and can add to your fighting force.”
The man looked both me and the bag over carefully. “I’m Eric.” He finally spoke up, his expression slightly more relaxed. He pointed at Liam who still stood next to me. “Who’s your friend?”
“I’m Liam, her lackey!” He announced before I could say something. “Also hopeful suitor.”
“Are you joining as well?”
“Of course!”
I glanced over at him. “What about your gang?”
“What gang?”
“…”
“… Those punks you met earlier? They’ll be fine.”
I sighed and turned back towards the hero of the story. “So what’s your answer?”
He watched us both, obviously thinking carefully. “On a trial basis.” He turned around, carefully protecting the delicate young woman next to him. She was petite, barely coming up to Eric’s shoulder, and had a fair complexion already turning red in the sun. Her eyes were large with an innocent light in them, as she stared at me with a nervous look.
This must be Hannah, our heroine. She definitely seems… easy to kidnap. So helping her become a well-rounded character is mission number one, huh? I followed behind them, my mind racing with plans to help turn her into a force to be reckoned with in this post-apocalyptic wasteland.
This is going to be fun!I rubbed my hands together, a villainous laugh escaping me.
Liam poked my arm, whispering. “Blaire, although I personally think your evil laugh is wonderful, and I could listen to it all day… I feel like I should warn you that you’re scaring the young girl over there.”
I paused, catching Hannah’s terrified expression, and tried to give her a reassuring smile. In response her face turned even more pale under her sunburn, and she hugged Eric tightly as if wanting to escape.
“Was my smile that terrifying?” I leaned over towards Liam and asked quietly.
“I’m the wrong person to ask. I find your strength and ability to intimidate the masses vastly reassuring.”
“Thanks… I guess.”
I followed the lead characters into the camp silently, Liam following close behind me.
It was time to save the story.
And… hopefully find a way to shower.

The Wrath of Life
Tumblr media
Light. Light of all colours in rainbow except for purple.  Surrounded by a golden aura. It was beautiful yet he is afraid.  When he tried to touch it. It burned him. Causing him screech a unholy sound with repeated phrases like. "Sinful creature and True spawn of hell."
There was a knock at the door.
Do these people have a life outside of bullying me?
He thought as he opened the door.  Except that the person was not who he is expecting, in fact he doesn't think he has ever seen him before. Before he could the stranger's name. He barge in straight to the guest room. "What a lovely house you two have, Nightmare." He said putting down his things . "Do you mind if you can run hot bath for me?" He asked.
"Um. First of all I don't even know you.  Second you can't just go to people's houses and expect them to treat you like royalty. " He said crossing his arms. The stranger look at him. "I thought Dream already told you about me." Nightmare thought of what Dream said before he left. "Neil?"
"That's me."
"Hold on if you are really Neil then give me proof."
Neil removed his cloak. Revealing that the cat has lost an arm. Nightmare felt guilty.  " Don't put on a sad face little boy.  You are just being protective of your home, and that I applaud you." Neil woke Nightmare with his thoughts. Neil then smile. " I guess I forgot that Dream told me you're not very trustful with strangers." Neil scratch his head "Speaking of which ,  Do you happen to know a person name Hubert Cumberdale or better known as Salad Fingers?" Nightmare gulped.  It's been awhile since he seen Hurbert his first and possibly only friend.  Last time he ever saw him was the time he had to take Hubert to the asylum. "Yes. I've know him." He answered.
"Hubert wanted me tell you thank you." Neil responded.
"For what?" Nightmare asked.  He doesn't remember giving Hubert any kindness in fact he thinks what he did was horrible. "Because of your actions Huber is now married with a beautiful wife they had a lovely child." Neil responded.  Nightmare sigh in relief. " So I was worry  for nothing?"
"Yup. Now can you please run me a hot bath?" Neil responded. Nightmare decided this time he would run him as hot bath.
~~~~~
Dinner was not like what he was expecting.  Instead of him cooking it was Neil. But at least it was good. Baked beans with roasted ham. With a cup of wine. He felt comfortable knowing the person living with him for a while is friendly. "Hey Night, what time is it.?" Neil asked. Nightmare looked outside. "Well it is dark." He said. "Well time for me to hit the sack." Neil got up and went to his bedroom.
Maybe I should go to sleep as well.
Nightmare thought. He took of his shirt. Brush his teeth with a dry corn cob. And went the his bed.  Falling asleep as soon his head hit the pillow. However instead of his normal nightmares this one felt wrong. He was wearing the same clothes Moon was except it was mostly black and sliver. He has markings all of him and he was behind a female paladin. Her skin was kissed by the sun itself. Her short hair looks like fire and her eyes were a red and yellow gradient.
"Sun. Is something wrong?" He spoke, but it wasn't his voice.  The paladin said nothing. "Sun?" The paladin turn with a flaming sword in her hand. "What are you doing?" He said backing away slowly, but the girl's eyes turned snake-like. And she jumped to him. Stabbing him with her blade. He quickly got the blade off of him screaming.  "WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU?" The girl didn't answer.  Instead she showed her snake-like fangs smiling. He knew this was a fight so he summoned his unprepared scythe. The girl called for help claiming Moon was a traitor again and all the women that came looks familiar.  "But Sun. Didn't Moon said-" One of girls tried the reason. "She lied to us again." She cut her off. Nightmare felt betrayal, but he doesn't understand why. None of the girls responded and attacked him. One tore his mask and shot him in his missing eye with a arrow.  A mix of magic and weapons overpowered him. He knows he can kill everyone if he takes his gloves, but he made a vow to never used his bare hands. So he decided to do the next self defense.  By placing a cursed on them. One where they are trapped in limbo. He place his scythe on the ground and chant in latin. However the paladin attacked him in the back. He felt his life draining from him as he hears a man scream. "Mi Nina." He shut his eyes for the final time with the feeling of wrath and sorrow.
Nightmare woke up in a cold sweat. As he looked around he saw that the scythe Moon gave him was with breaking. Eventually turning a bit bigger with a moth at the bottom.
What just happened?
He thought. Maybe another vision? He eventually fell back to sleep. He'll think about it in the morning.
~~~~
The autumn harvest festival has arrived and Nightmare put on his more regal garment. Neil was getting a few beers and the townsfolk had forgot he existed.  He was thinking about looking into the lore of the festival until a mysterious stanger showed up wearing strange garments.  She was pretty however.  Skin that was kiss by the sun, flaming hair that's been put up by a high ponytail.  A gold-red mask covering half her face, but not fully her scar.
Tumblr media
The priest was the first to got up to her. "Hello madam." He said.
"Olá" She responded.  "Huh?"
"I said hello in my native tongue." She answered.
"Oh. Anyways  What a pretty thing like you brings in our beautiful village?" He said.
Here he goes again trying to groom someone.
Nightmare thought as he rolled his eyes.  He look at her again and felt off. Like he met her before.
It wasn't long till she spotted him. She walks towards him.  Later squinting her eye. "M-Moonie?" She asked almost crying. Nightmare felt awkward.  "No, I'm Nightmare." He said. She blinked. "Oh my mistake, you just reminded me of an old friend of mine." She said as she walk away whispering "Eu sinto Muito.".
Why do I feel unsafe around her?
Nightmare asked himself.
"You best keep an eye on her." Nightmare heard a familiar voice.  He turned and saw Nox in disguise.
Tumblr media
"What are you doing here?" Nightmare asked. "Errands." Nox reply.
"Hey, Nox can I have a word with you?" Nightmare asked. Nox set the large sack he was carrying down. "What is it?"
"That's scythe Moon gave me.  Is it perhaps any chance curse?"
"What makes you say that?" Nox reply. "Last night I had a dream where I was murdered.  But it wasn't me at all." Nightmare answer. "Maybe the scythe didn't like you." Nox said. Nightmare could feel the jealous aura coming from Nox.
What's make that scythe so important to him?
He thought. "I think there's something that you're not telling me.  In fact ever since we first met I could sense you have some grudge against me and I don't know why." Nightmare said. Nox glared at him than he towered over him getting ready to punch him. Yet he didn't.  Instead he just sighed. "Moon's soul stuck in it. And I don't want anything bad happen to him." Nightmare had seen this behavior before.  In both real life and in his books mostly his romantic novels. "Are you telling me that you're..." Nightmare begin. "No. Not like that." Nox begins to plea. "In love with him?.." Nightmare finished.  He's no love expert, but  He can tell Nox is in love with Moon. Nox blushed a purple hue before covering his face. "Look me and Moon first met we had a rocky beginning.  I was task with killing death by W.D Gaster. I would have succeeded if that man didn't spot me. When we met again  It turns out that both of us aren't so different after all and.." Nox stops himself and put his arm around his chest. "He was the only person I could talk to about these feelings of hate on being born with a uncomfortable body." Even though Nightmare can't understand he felt bad for Nox. "So what do you think about that dream I had? Does it mean something?" Nightmare asked trying to change the subject.  "I don't know myself. And I read all of Moon's books and scrolls." Nox answered. Nightmare watch Nox pack up. "Where are you going?" Nightmare asked. "Home. Hecate freaks out being alone at midnight." Nox replied. Nightmare took a breath.  Then music became louder and more vibrant, with the lights and fire becoming brighter and more warm. He turn and saw the stranger dancing with the strong man. Something doesn't seem right. Usually the strong man would refuse to dance for anyone, but the little girl he was targeting.  And he could've swore he saw scales of a snake on the stranger. The stranger later took the man to a small alley.  Nightmare thought that the man is just showing her around town. So he didn't pay much attention. He decided to try out the bobbing for apples he saw a couple of people did.  He should known better than to trust everyone when they pushed his head into the water. Luckily the little ones are making smores next to its fire they made themselves so maybe he can rest there.  As he headed to the campfire the little boy with the abusive mother grabbed him. "Nightmare, I don't feel comfortable with that girl."
"What girl?" Nightmare asked.
"The girl dancing with my mom." The boy pointed out. Nightmare took a look and saw that the stranger with the boy's mother.
Wasn't she with the strong man?
He thought. He turned to boy. "I'll keep a close eye on them while you have fun with your friends. Alright?" The boy nodded. Nightmare walks towards the dancers, but made sure that both of them can't spot him. He watch as the stranger convinced the abusive mother to go to the alley. Once there the stranger carefully removed the other woman's clothes. Nightmare thought they were going to court with each other so he turned away embarrassed. Even if he wasn't there the two women would eventually be found, and be hanged for committing homosexuality witchcraft. He left to tell the boy he might be getting two moms if they can convince the court. To his surprise the boy didn't pay no mind to it. In fact the boy just ask if it's okay with God. He doesn't know how reply due to him not being religious.  So they change the topic. Eventually Nightmare forgot about the stranger. Later he got tried and decided he had enough partying for tonight. As he went back home he heard a scream next to him. He turn to where the scream was and saw the unimaginable.
Tumblr media
Everyone that danced with the stanger died in pools of blood and a demon snake mantis fire thing licking some from her hands. Nightmare backed away slowly until a woman scream caught the creature's attention. She smile and dash past Nightmare and grabbed the woman and begins to feast on her. By making her paralyze with the vemon in her fangs. Then she gutted her with her teeth. Later riping her limb from limb until she was nothing more than a pool of blood. Worst of all everyone saw it. While Nightmare ran.
Is that a Solarite?
He thought, but someone grabbed him and push him towards her. The Solerite took notice and held him down. Nightmare closed his eyes and hope that the death will be quick, except it never came. Instead she froze in place and is beginning to cry blood. Then stopped. "Você conhece o Nim?" She said.
"W-What?" Nightmare asked. "I said. Do you know Nim? You know that apple tree dryad?" She said.
"Yes. She's my mother." He said. She glared, but not at him. "Essa vadia...I know she would do this. But never to her own son."  She muttered.  "Nightmare, did you summoned this..thing?" A man yelled. "No. I barely even kno-" He was cut off. "As if you weren't evil enough you destroyed a sacred ceremony. " Nightmare look down.
Are they that stupid?
He thought. "Wait, I cause the massacre.  Not him. And how is he a part of it?" The solerite asked. "Didn't he summoned you?" Someone else asked. "No. I came by going on a boat by myself. " She answered.  "Well he bleeds black blood." A woman said. "I have a close friend who bleeds black blood and he would never harm someone unless he has too or is provoked." She replied. The solarite stood up and allowed Nightmare to stand up. Then she put her hand on his shoulder.  Surprisingly it didn't burn him. "Are you a scapegoat?" She asked. Nightmare took a deep breath.  "Yes." She turns to village.  "Raise your hand if you still think he cause the massacre?" Not surprisingly almost all of village raise their hands. "Good thing my pets love barbecues." She whispered. "Now come to me if you think he is innocent." All the children and some of villagers came forward despite their loved ones pleas and threats. She came up to them and pat them all on their heads. Later did the same to Nightmare. "Who are you?" Someone said. The solarite smile. "I am the wrath of life." She said as she turns into a snake and begins slithering away. Many tried catch her, but she was too fast. And those that did hands were burnt to a crisp. Nightmare took the opportunity to run. He went home grabbed Moon's scythe and spent the night at the in-hill. Planning to talk to Moon about her and about that dream.

Hang ‘Em High {Arthur Morgan x FemOC} Chapter 10
Tumblr media
Pairing: Arthur Morgan x FemOC Summery: Belle Hawthorne is high society looking to escape her mean husband. A robbery by the Van Der Linde gang could be her chance. Can she escape his cluches and possibly discover what love should feel like?
Warnings: None
.....
The next morning was blissfully quiet, everyone going about their business and doing camp chores as per usual. Sitting with Mary-Beth, hand deep in laundry buckets overflowing with soapy water I couldn't help but wonder why there wasn't a sense of urgency after the meeting with those Pinkertons yesterday. With how worried Arthur seemed I was under the impression it was a serious matter that would need to be dealt with in some way. Maybe they were used to this happening, maybe it wasn’t as big of a deal as I perceived it to be.
“Do you read, Miss Bella?” Mary-Beth asked, pulling me out of my thoughts.
“Sure. Used to always read as a kid.”
“Any of those being romance and love stories? Those are my favourite to read.”
“A few. Jane Eyre, Pride and Prejudice, Madame Bovary, although that one is tragic in the end.” I wring out a shirt covered in dirt and even blood from a recent stagecoach job a few of the men went on. I didn't even want to ask whose blood it was. Scrunching my nose in slight disgust and plunging the shirt back into the water to work at it some more.
“I’ve written a few little stories of my own, hoping to write a novel someday.” She smiled sheepishly to me then looking back down to the bucket. Violently scrubbing at something that must also look in the same state as the shirt currently in my hands.
“Haven’t you ever thought of leaving and making a true love story of your own?” I shift my legs from below me to sit more comfortably. The knife I hadn’t yet given back to Arthur after being at the lake slightly stabbing into my ankle from its position in my boot.
“I have once or twice. It’s too dangerous for us ladies being out in the world alone. I don’t know where I would be if Dutch and Hosea didn’t find me a few years ago.”
“What happened?” I look at her now. I had a genuine curiosity when it came to knowing these peoples stories and how they all came together. They all had lives I would only ever hear about in story books or newspapers so being a part of their lives and this merry band of fools was still rather surreal to me. Like one of those dreams that feel so real until you woke up, only I hoped I wouldn’t wake from this due to the fear of waking up back in that house, Frank at my side
“I was getting chased by a few men I had stolen from. I’m a damn good pickpocket but I must have got a bit too confident. Dutch and Hosea saw and helped me get away with them.”
I shot her a smile, both of us continuing with our tasks before Miss Grimshaw made her rounds and scolds us for slacking.
By mid-afternoon when some sense of quiet had fallen within the camp, I made my way to the edge of the camp, sitting upon a rock and looking out over the overlook, coffee in hand. My fingers still shriveled up, resembling raisins from the seeminly never-ending laundry this morning.
“Not thinking of jumping again are you?” Arthur pulls me from my thoughts as he approaches.
“Not funny. Besides, why would I jump when I have a gun in my possession now?”
He huffs at that, coming over to stand beside me and pulling out a pack of cigarettes from his satchel. Lighting one with a match strike to the rock I was sat on. “You okay after yesterday?”
“Yeah, just,” I bite my lip, thinking of the right words to say “Is nothing going to be done about it? Seems like a serious issue.”
“Dutch says he’s dealing with it.”
I hum at this, trusting his word on the matter.
“Busy today?” I ask, taking a brief sip of my coffee, feeling it flow down my throat and burn slightly.
“Well, had to collect some debt not far from here on behalf of Strauss. Fella was dead already.”
“Have you told Strauss that you didn’t get the money?”
“Nah not yet. Should have forced it from the widow but I couldn’t. Might be legal work but it don’t sit right with me,”
“How so?”
“Robbing banks and stealing from rich folk is one thing, they have all the money they need while others starve. Strauss picks out those that are starving, those with nothing.”
“Don’t do it then.” I shrug, seemingly pointing out the obvious.
“We need the money.” He shrugs too, taking a drag and blowing out the plume of smoke.
“So do they. Help people as need helping. That’s what you said to me.”
“Ain’t that simple.” he huffs again, this time in frustration.
“I’m still not accustomed to your way of life yet. But, I do have a few questions.”
“Shoot.”
“Five thousand dollars. How on earth did you get a bounty that high?”
“Numerous things. Robberies, killings, hostages.”
“Oh, I’m familiar with that one.” I nod before turning to face him. Arthur swaying slightly with a hand resting on his gun belt before continuing.
“Being Dutchs’ main gun, so they call me, is probably a reason too. I wasn’t involved with the job in Blackwater but my name was mentioned regardless.” He takes another drag before flicking the stub out over the edge.
“What happened in Blackwater?” I ask, my coffee now cooling and long-forgotten, still in the clutches on my hands and perched on my lap.
And so he told me of what happened. That he had a job with Hosea that seemed like it would work out fine without needing to rob a ferry full of bank money. That the robbery turned into a massacre, swarmed by Pinkertons with no way but to shoot their way out and everyone fleeing for the hills. The hushed words of Dutch killing an innocent woman. Having to escape from Blackwater and the Great Plains and up into the deadly icy mountains, losing most of their possessions, all their money and a few members along the way. Then they ended up here, trying to lay low until they had enough money to leave again. That’s why they planned to rob Frank. Strike up a false business deal and then take what he had at the party all those weeks ago. It was risky but with being so far from Saint Denis they thought it would be worth a shot. They are desperate. “I know plenty of rotten rich folk. If any opportunity comes up for you to rob them. I’m more than happy to give over whatever information I have.”
“Really? You would help us to rob your fancy friends?”
“They ain’t my friends. Like I said, some of them are rotten and deserve it.”
“Sure.”
There were a few moments of silence as he shifted on his feet again. I turned back to the view ahead and then down to the cold cup in my hands, huffing as I flung the liquid out onto the grass at my feet. Might as well get another cup.
“I best go see what John wants in town.”
I nodded with a smile and with that he left and made his way to the horses. Giving his horse a few gentle pats on the neck before mounting up and leaving camp towards Valentine.
Sitting with Abigail and Tilly at the fire a few hours later, laughing amongst ourselves and sharing a bottle of whiskey, enjoying the easy day it had been. That was until rumbling hoof beats came thundering down the eastern path. Dutch, John and an injured Strauss shouting for everyone to get started on packing up the camp now. Dutch made his way to his tent, Hosea following in quickly behind him.
With the sudden sense of urgency, everyone stood and started gathering whatever they could around the camp, preparing wagons and disassembling tents. I didn’t really know what to do, so I sought out Grimshaw for orders as she was swiftly moving about the camp, making sure everyone was doing something. She soon presented me with one, helping Pearson pack up the food wagon and to make sure nothing is left behind. I turned on my heels and made a beeline towards the wagon in question wondering what the hell had happened for us to be moving so quickly. Questions for later I told myself as I helped Pearson empty water barrels and pack up all food wares.
It wasn’t long until everything was packed up, evidence that this had been done probably a few times in the past. Dutch had us all follow him in the front wagon, telling us all of a place that has been cleared out for us thanks to Charles and Arthur. I mounted Orion instead of sitting in a wagon with the other girls, staying close behind everyone as we made our way. The new camp sat right by Flat Iron Lake and it didn’t take long to reassemble everything again. Everything back up and running by nightfall.
The next morning everyone seemed to be woken by the brightness dawn brought upon us but the heat that Lemoyne was known for. Everyone was already sweating and agitated, although that agitation could also be down to having to run once again. Getting themselves into more trouble and some worried that it was going to be simply impossible to get themselves out of this hole they are digging for themselves. They believed Dutch would get them all to brighter pastures. A blind loyalty that hasn't failed them before. We were all filled in on the goings-on the day before by word of mouth. A shootout with Cornwalls men, John and Strauss lucky to get out with their lives if it wasn't for Dutchs’ way with words and Arthurs’ way with guns.
A few others planned on heading into the town nearby, Rhodes. To get a feel of the place and scope out any potential jobs or leads. Karen and I sat in the wagon, Arthur and Charles upfront as we made our way to the new town with new possibilities. I had mentioned a previous visit to Rhodes to sell a few horses to the Braithwait family that live nearby. Once at the dusty town of Rhodes, a thankful change from a soiled and shit foul town of Valentine, we all decided to split. Arthur and Charles made their way to the station, Karen towards the parlour house and I made my way to the general store. We were under strict orders not to ask too many questions to prevent bringing any unwanted attention to ourselves. Strangers turning up to this small town asking strange questions would spread quickly here. Three men sat on the stairs of the store, making my way past them without a second thought and entering the small store. A chime above the door alerting the owner as I made my way inside. The place didn't have much but it had the basic necessities. Sauntering around I took in what they had. Coffee, salted meat, tinned fruit, fresh produce, a few tonics and...chocolate bars. The corners of my mouth lifted in a bright smile at the sight of something sweet, oh it had been a good while since I had chocolate and I'm sure $2 for one bar would be worth it.
I picked up a bar and a box of oatcakes for Orion, swiftly making my way to the counter to ring up my purchases.
I exchanged pleasantries with the owner, a thin man with sparse hair on his head but an impressively large moustache. He asked if I was staying in town long when the door charm rang out behind me. I paid no mind to the various footsteps I could hear instead y attention was caught when one cleared their throat, prompting me to turn to face them. It was the three men previously sat outside, their attention solely on me.
“You look awfully familiar, Miss” One man said with a slight Irish accent from what I could tell.
“I’m new to town. Just passing through.” I smile slightly
“A lady shouldn’t be passing through town on her own.” Another man said, stood by the door.
“Oh, I’m not…”
“Why don't you come with us?” The first man drawled, taking slow but confident steps towards me. Instinctively I moved back each time he made a step forwards, quickly being stopped by the serving counter digging into my back. “I...I assure you gentlemen I am... not alone” I stuttered, my eyes swiftly looking towards the windows in the hopes someone, anyone, would make their way over.
“I don't see anyone else here. You're coming with us, missy.” With that, he lurched forward to grab my arms. His grip digging into my flesh as I tried helplessly to push him off. Mentally scolding myself for not bringing my gun with me.
“Get off me!” I squealed, my thrashing no use as one of the other men appeared beside me, tying a cloth around my head and pushing the fabric into my mouth to quell my protests. A black sack following soon after to cover my full head.
I trashed as hard as I could, kicking the man still gripping my arms so hard I'll for sure be left with bruises.
“You're making this worse for yourself, missy. And you... say a word of this to anyone and this place will be burned to the ground with you in it!” With that, they began to drag me away through what must have been through the back door, away from the main street.
My hand got tied together swiftly, the rope burning into my flesh and tears burning down my face. Trying to pull back was useless, digging my heels into the dry dirt a weak attempt to escape their relentless grasps. Hauling me up and onto the back of a horse, the three men laughed as they mounted. Taking me away to god knows where to do god knows what to me.
“Any funny business and I’ll punch seven shades of shit outta you. Give you something to cry about.” The man whose horse I was upon shouted back towards me, thundering hoofbeats ringing out in my ears.

hotel blue moon | 3
"Oh, am I angry? Are you scared? Maybe you shouldn't have followed me to a dark parking lot. Don't you know not to make deals with witches?"
"Look at me. Do I look scared?"
part 1 | part 2 | part 4 | read on page (not for the mobile app, but prettier)
In the 1980s, literary critic Seung Giljang, nickname Suicide Bomber, became significant after writing the very first review of writer Do Huijae's first crime novel, The Horse's Head. Do Huijae's novels took off in no time at all, and while it was not necessarily because of Seung Giljung's review, that review did put him on the map right alongside her.
Years passed. The man wrote review after review for her novels, even getting some early access copies to create hype for the public for when they were released. Oh, he wrote some others, but those simply did not agree with public opinion or writers’ interpretations the way his reviews of the Crime Queen’s did.
Then, Do Huijae died—and a few years later, the technically-retired Seung Giljang began to write exclusive reviews whenever one of her daughter's books released.
Two days ago, the man had fallen from the stairs at one of those new malls that were done from the front but had open stairwells at the back, full of unfinished mortar and no handles on their stairs. Freak accident. What a tragedy. Such a shame.
Moonyoung wished she could have enjoyed watching him fall.
Since he was so well-known for his connection to both Moonyoung and her mother, she had to make an appearance at his funeral. That seemed fair to her. She donned an outfit all in black, frills all the way down her arms that were just a little too excitable for a funeral—but then, Ko Moonyoung always dressed this way. She was known for her odd dressing sense. Sangin shot her a glare, but didn't bother to say anything—likely he knew that there was nothing he could do to change her mind. If she wanted to dress for a party, she would dress for a damn party.
She brought flowers, too. Wilted. And she walked into the memorial house with her lips not doing what she wanted (she didn't want to look sad, not even for the few odd cameras that had gathered outside the building to see who came or didn't come) and her fists and jaw and head clenching and unclenching and clenching and unclenching.
It wasn't that she regretted it. It wasn't even that she wished he hadn't died. Moonyoung had never been the sort of person to regret her decisions. What use was that? She had done it, it was done; I-didn't-mean-to’s and I-wish-I-hadn't’s meant nothing once you did what you wanted. And she always did what she wanted. And that man had deserved that push—he had been threatening her for years with a fact that was outside of her control, and coming onto her like that had been the last straw.
Everyone who knew Moonyoung (or her mother) knew not to make her angry. Was it her fault if they forgot that? He knew what sort of person she was; he had been holding it above her and her publisher's head for over ten years. Was it her fault if he thought she wouldn't use that against him when he had been using it against her for so long?
No, she was not regretting anything. But he had died, and she wasn't feeling any better—not an inkling of satisfaction or contentment or happiness or fucking anything that one of the many people intent on bothering her would now stop.
No, all she was—was angry.
She stared at the little message dedicated to Giljang and her lips pulled up—not quite the smile she would like, but they were getting there. A week ago—had it been only a week?—she'd told someone that there were some people in the world that deserved to die. She stood by it; there were many. She had also implied—that she was the some sort of vigilante that killed people. He hadn't bought it, which perhaps was wise—
Moonyoung may be a monster, but she hadn't actually killed anyone before. Not intentionally. Not quite unintentionally, either.
She turned around on a heel, suddenly furious with herself and everyone around her, and marched out of the rooms reserved for this memorial. The people at the center were apparently too focused on their own grief to get in her way so she could snap at someone, so she got down the stairs uninterrupted.
That was when she saw him.
"You!"
Moon Kangtae stood there, in a black ensemble, looking rather unsurprised to see her. She strode to him, anger licking into her hands. "What are you doing here?"
He raised an eyebrow. "It's a memorial house."
"What are you doing here today?" There were other memorials here, but she didn't believe in coincidences. She had been thinking of him, too, just minutes ago. "Don't tell me you're here to visit some—" Before she could finish her sentence, her eyes caught on his blazer pocket. "What the hell is this?"
He blinked, and it may have been momentary, but she saw it in his eyes just then—the feeling of being caught out. Then it was gone, and he was playing dumb. "It's a pen."
"This is Seung Giljung's pen." Black, glossy finish, monogrammed cap, tip sharp enough to take an eye out if you tried. She had tried. She would have liked that better, she decided, to see it pierce through. That was the reason she wasn't satisfied, she decided. People forgot what kind of person she was, even if she did her best to remind them—a fall was simply not enough for that sort of person. "How do you have this?"
Fortunately for him, he didn't try to deny it. Good. She might have stabbed him again. "You're right."
She took a step forward, extremely glad she'd worn heels. He wasn't much taller than her, and four inches put them nearly eye to eye if she tried. "How do you know him?"
Kangtae shrugged, not responding nearly as fast as she would like. He was pissing her off. He was too calm, far too calm, and she was about to scream at him, and damn the cameras outside, damn anything she gave away. "We've had business together."
Business? Ha. She didn't know that man to do anything but write bad reviews. The primary source of all his wealth was—blackmail. "Business," she scoffed. "So is that all you do? Shady deals? Where did you get that pen from?" That pen should, by all means, have been lying at the stairwell where she pushed him, along with piles of cash. She had watched as the ambulance took him away, but no one had bothered to go up the stairs that day.
"It was repayment for a deal," he said.
"He had that pen with him the day he died," she said, too angry to care if he understood what that meant.
"I'm sure he had more than one of the same pen," Kangtae said, ignoring her hint. "Can you wait out here for a minute? I have to go inside."
She scoffed. "Wait here? Why should I wait here? Did we come together? Do we know each other? Do you want to wipe my tears?" She stomped out into the parking lot. Not two seconds after she was through the door, she heard footsteps following, and then—
"Ko Moonyoung!"
She scoffed and got behind a pillar that would be hidden from his view. Ko Moonyoung. Who did he think he was? He had been casual with her the first time they met, but she had been a little preoccupied there. And he had some nerve—after he told her that he didn't want to see her at his hotel ever again—she may be attracted to him, but she wasn't interested in this sort of—
A hand grabbed her wrist, and she startled—but it was only Kangtae.
He tugged her closer. "Breathe," he said. "I don't know why you're angry, but we have to—"
"Oh, am I angry? Are you scared?" A light flickered in the parking lot, almost on cue, and Kangtae's eyes shot up, then glanced around. "Oh, you are scared," she announced, bringing a hand up to his chest, feeling muscle jump underneath as she made contact. "Maybe you shouldn't have followed me to a dark parking lot," she said, words not stopping, just tumbling out, one after the other after the other. "Don't you know not to make deals with witches?"
Kangtae said nothing—his eyes darted around, here and there, behind her, above her, to the side. She scoffed. What a waste of time. She shoved his shoulder, and he was distracted enough that he almost let her go, before grabbing her by the arm and turning her around. Her heels were high, and his grip was tight; she fell toward him, stopping only when he steadied her.
"Look at me," he said. She was still tugging at her hand, but he had apparently learned not to hold her wrist too loosely. "Look at me," he repeated, just a touch more forcefully. The parking lot lights died for a moment, then returned. She looked behind, but he tugged her back to looking at his face. "Do I look scared?"
Her mind didn't quite work when she was angry. She didn't notice things the way she ordinarily would. Like how he looked serious today—so serious, serious in a way he hadn't been when she had a knife embedded in his palm. His eyes were dark and somber, and his mouth wasn't pulled into a playful little smirk. And there was something dark behind his eyes than there had been the first two times they had met. Something angry—or maybe that was just her. But no fear, no. Definitely not now that he was focused on her, and not on the environment.
The lights flickered.
"Do I?" he asked again. She exhaled.
"No."
He hummed, sound coming from deep in his chest, a low soothing tone. "Close your eyes."
She clicked her tongue. "What is this?"
He looked peeved, and she almost smiled at that—she hadn't expected the hint of irritation in his eyes to look quite so attractive. "I said close your eyes."
"Since you insist," she said, and closed her eyes.
"Good," he whispered, somewhere near her ears. She held back a shiver. Light flickered behind her eyelids, orange and then black and then orange again. She felt breath near her ears. The parking lot grew colder and colder compared to the warmth right in front of her, until the skin of her legs was prickly and only the hand he was holding was warm. The air stirred with something. All sound seemed to fade until all she heard was Kangtae breathing and a slice of heavy silence.
One minute. Two. The only reason she didn't open her eyes was because she could feel him there.
Then, like a vignette in sound, voice fading in from nothing at all, he said, "Open your eyes."
When she opened her eyes, it was bright and warm.
Of course it was warm. It was a warm day, one of those that told you spring was almost here. Why would it have been cold?
"What was that?" she asked him.
He smirked, whatever she had seen in his eyes earlier gone but for a flash, right there at the back. "Telekinesis. I can do wonders to your mind. Are you still angry?"
By the time he returned to the hotel, it was dark, nearly time for the moon to rise. Kangtae was not given to be late, but he knew he had cut it just close enough that Haengja was stressed out, her hands and mouth drawn tight together. Or maybe that was just because of his anger? The hotel tended to be sensitive to his moods, and Mrs. Park was sensitive to things within the hotel.
Every ghost he passed stepped out of his way, and the walls themselves seemed to meld to get him to his destination as quickly as possible. His head staff appeared almost in seconds of his calling for them, almost as though they were ready, expecting a call.
"Who let him out?" he asked.
His staff hemmed and hawwed as they always did, but Kangtae was not in any mood for that today. They had known this morning that it was the day of the critic's funeral, and that holding him until it was through was essential. They had been here for years, knew their jobs, knew what he was keeping them here for. "When I say a ghost must be secured, they must be secured at all costs."
"The ghost had shown all signs of moving on if he got what he wanted," Haengja said, and his jaw clenched. She hadn't seen what the pen had shown him—your mother was also very sexy—I knew you'd come after me—a lech of a smile—I can destroy you with the tip of my pen—a scream. His glass shook in his hand. He hated liars. He hated ghosts who tried to take advantage of the possibilities this blasted hotel was obligated to offer them.
"Do you by any chance want to run this hotel, Mrs. Park?" he asked. She stepped away, hands folded behind her back. "That's what I thought. Now who let him out?"
Chayong raised one shaky hand. "I was meant to watch him, but—"
Kangtae didn't care about but. He finished his drink and banged it on the table, and Chayong shut up. "The next time you let a spirit loose like that and don't make sure it's contained, I'll destroy your soul first," he said. Chayong shook in place. Kangtae huffed, and poured himself another drink, looking up when his staff members didn't leave. "Well? Why the hell are you still here?"
They left in a rush. "He usually does what the guests who'll pay him want," Chayong was whining, making him question—like every other week—why he kept that ghost around.
Kangtae closed his eyes, pressed the cool glass to his forehead, and exhaled, long and slow, until the thunder in his chest had stilled to just a rumble.
Usually. Usually. Usually two boxes of pure cash, cash that no one would know about would mean that ghost got near anything they wanted. Usually he didn't care who got hurt at the end of it—it was usually someone who deserved it.
But nothing about Ko Moonyoung had been usual.
As he'd been leaving, she'd asked: "Do you believe in destiny?"
Kangtae wished he didn't.

My Reincarnation Isekai Villainess Rec List
So.  I’ve gone and found myself in Isekai/Reincarnation/Villainess hell.  For those who don’t know Isekai is a genre in which character(s) are transported to a different world.  Initially you might be thinking “oh, she’s gonna share a both a series like Sword Art Online.”  Oh no.  You have underestimated the amount of taste I have.  By which I mean I have none but that SOA is a taste I’m not here for.
Now a very specific sub-genre of that is the reincarnation one, particularly in which a character is reborn as a character from one of their favorite books or games from their previous, modern life.  An even more specific sub-genre of that one is in which the MC is reborn as a villainess from that book or game, thus creating a bit of a challenge as villainesses usually are destined to die in the source material.
So! Here are my favorites, many of which are all 3 but some combine one or two of the above tropes.  It’s my list so I do what I want.  And most of my faves have a shojo genre tag, or at least a romance tag, because that’s where all the good stuff is:
-
Survive as the Hero’s Wife by Nokki
Canaria is reincarnated as the villainess of a popular cliche novel. Based on the novel, she is destined to be executed but can she prevent this from happening before it’s too late?
Tumblr media
Why *I* like it:  So this one was the one that really got me into the villainess reincarnation isekai genre!  And it remains the top of my list. The huge draw for me in this one is that I actually really like the main couple!  Like not even just lukewarm, I really like it!  I’d read fic for it, if that existed.  A lot of the villainess genre tend to portray the original heroine as vapid, unworthy of their status of heroine, or the actual villainess but in this case Gracie just turns out to be just an amazing strong woman who doesn’t actually need a man.  (In fact I ship the three together full stop tbh lol).  In fact, it’s a subplot that Gracie realizes (because of MC’s words) that if she wants to inherit her father’s title even though the law says a woman cannot... That she just should strive to change the law rather than be a tool with no use outside of marriage.   And not to spoil anything, but she will definitely do just that.
And since I’m mainly finishing the rough draft of this list out of absolute RAGE at being made fun of for being into this genre.... A compilation of the main love interest, Cesar, because he’s absolutely beautiful.  Look at those eyes!  He’s such a great example of the sullen, dark love interest because he’s not those things when he’s with his wife, the MC!!!  He’s so soft for her.  And the whole point is that the love interest shows a different side to their lover right??
Tumblr media
And like the great thing is Canaria, the MC, totally doesn’t notice for the longest time.  She read the novel in her previous life so she’s *convinced* that one day Cesar will fall for the novel’s original leading woman, and she makes plans accordingly throughout their early days of their marriage.  She completely hadn’t thought about the fact that since she’s not being a villainess this time around and not abusing him and everyone around her, and makes friends with Cesar... Like of course the course of events change.  It utterly baffles Cesar when his wife keeps bringing up divorce because he’s so completely in love with her and you just gotta eat that shit up with a spoon because it’s so good and perfect drama but also funny.
There’s even a Halloween chapter where everyone wears costumes and basically I believe I was pandered to specifically.
Tumblr media
Tbh, the arc going atm is sorta losing my interest but that’s because there’s political intrigue and I’m like just here for the romance lmao.  So someone looking for substance and not just fluff might be more pleased than I. But it’s still on-going so.  It’s just all in all a fun and great introduction to the genre imo.
-
I Reincarnated into an Otome Game as a Villainess With Only Destruction Flags by Hidaka Nami (Art) and Yamaguchi Satoru (Story)
Eight-year-old Katarina Claes is the only daughter of a duke, living her life peacefully and without incident until she hits her head on a rock... and then remembers that she is not actually the duke's daughter. She used to be an otaku who died on her way to school after spending the entire previous night playing Fortune Lover, her favorite otome game. After noticing that her current surroundings seem oddly familiar, she is shocked to discover that she has been reincarnated into the world of Fortune Lover as the villainess.
The villainess in the game usually winds up dead or exiled, so Katarina decides to use her knowledge of the game and its routes to avoid any bad situations. But is it even possible for the villainess to reach a good ending?
Tumblr media
Why *I* like it:  Ok ok ok, lol. So this one is probably one of the most well-known of the villainess reincarnation isekai genre atm!  Particularly because of the anime currently running.  And for good reason... the MC is so brilliantly stupid in the best of ways.  While she plots on how to escape her fate of being killed or exiled by learning to sword fight and how to garden, she’s more or less seduced every capture target in this dating game... AND all the female rivals to boot AND heroine.  The thing is that she is completely unaware and continues training for the day she is inevitably killed or exiled, as per the game’s original ending.
Tumblr media
It’s just a silly, fun series and all the women’s feelings for her are taken about as seriously as all the guys’... Which isn’t much because absolutely no one really has a chance of getting this woman to understand they are all madly in love with her.  Not a series to take seriously which is part of it’s charm, but it retains a lot of heart especially when it comes to the MC Katarina (affectionally called Bakarina by fandom) remembering her friend and family from her past life.
This series also has a manga spin-off about what if she’d been reincarnated while already in high school and bullying the heroine instead of a child... So basically she’s in hard mode, and yet she still succeeds in getting even more people into her little harem she has for herself.
Whether you chose to watch the anime or the manga (or the LN, which I haven’t got to) you can’t go wrong.

It Seems Like I Got Reincarnated Into The World of a Yandere Otome Game by  Hanaki, Momiji (Story) and Setsuri (Art)
As a precocious child, Lycoris suffers from a strange sense of deja vu. On the day her father told her about her fiancé, she realizes that her fiancé was a character from an otome game she once played in a previous life.
“I am the heroine’s rival from the game?
And in the bad ending, I get stabbed to death?
What a joke.”
A story in which the protagonist is determined to avoid a yandere situation.
Tumblr media
Why *I* like it: Hear me out! I know what you’re thinking... Yanderes??? But here’s the thing...  Just by the MC being kind and getting 2 of the “yandere” characters out of abusive environments, they no longer end up as yanderes as they grow up.   They aren’t those tropes any more!  While the characters remain protective, they aren’t possessive and are happy to see MC branch out, if a little lonely.  And the yandere that remain aren’t treated as hot, but annoying.   So like sorry to disappoint if you think yanderes are hot but this isn’t the series for you.
Additionally, unlike other series of this trope, the MC is pretty quick to realize she just needs to trust her lover, that he will not turn on her and kill her as he did in the game nor will he fall for the heroine instead of her.  It’s somewhat refreshing, as a huge part of the trope is the MC typically doesn’t realize until it’s spelled out that by not acting as a villain.... the rest of the characters don’t want to harm them... And might even have fallen in love with them.
Another fun aspect is how MC doesn’t remember things immediately, but only remembers things from her past life (and of how the game went) until it comes up.  Additionally, she wonders some interesting things that aren’t even mentioned in other series like... What if she’s destined to be exactly like the game character? Will she be forced to be exactly like her? It’s a fun exploration of some common reincarnation isekai villainess tropes if you have experience with the genre!

Ascendance of a Bookworm by Shiina You (Art) and Kazuki Miya (Story)
A book-loving student and soon to be librarian ends up crushed to death by the pile of books during an earthquakes and wakes up as a five year old girl named Main in another world where books are scarce only available to the elite.  Main, retaining her memories of her past life, decides to create and print her own books so she can read again.
Tumblr media
Why *I* like it:  So here is we depart from solely the villainess sub-genre (but only briefly!)  Because there is another sub-genre of reincarnation isekai and that’s in which the MC uses the things they learned on our planet earth to re-invent things like shampoo and the printing press.  And no other isekai does it better than Ascendance of a Bookworm imo. Main’s love for books leads her to recreating things she took for granted on Earth and starts selling them from a young age... Which might just end up saving her life as she ends up having a terminal disease that ordinarily she’d only be able to survive by being a slave to a noble... But by selling her products she has a chance to save herself!!!  And the products she creates are available to commoners, not just the nobles who of course make it impossible for the poor to have nice things.
Additionally, a majority of this trope centers around nobles and royalty (and all the best ones are historical settings)... The fun thing about this one is that it actually centers around a povert stricken family.  It’s a good break from the noble hierarchy within most isekai.
Finally, this series is the one that hits most closely to my feelings if I were to be reincarnated in another world... Which is to cry at the realization that I will never finish any of the on-going books and manga I had going on.  That’s absolute hell, I don’t know how any of these MCs deal!! ;_;
btw there is an anime and manga both. Also LN but tbh almost all of these have LN.

Isekai Omotenashi Gohan by  Shinobumaru (Story) and Medamayaki (Art)
Akane, an ordinary office lady, gets summoned to a different world along with her younger sister and pet dog. There, she ends up treating rare guests one after another with hospitality through meals!! Can she satisfy the citizens of a different world with home cooking...?!
Tumblr media
Why *I* like it:   Continuing our brief deviation from the villainess trope, Isekai Omotenashi Gohan is my favorite example of another subgenre of isekai - one without reincarnation - but one in which a “hero” is transmigrated to another world to save it... The problem? Oppsie, 2 people were taken.  Sometimes in this sub-genre there is a question who the true savior is but in Isekai Omotenashi Gohan’s case they figure that out pretty quickly.  They quickly figure out the MC’s younger sister is the savior.  At first the older sister (Akane) is set aside as unimportant... But her sister only wants to eat the food her sister makes and it quickly becomes obvious that Akane’s role is important.
Akane makes lots of allies and friends by sharing the food from Japan and of course has a very subtle romance going on with her guard.  But honestly I just enjoy this series as a person that likes food manga, like that’s it lmao, so much so that don’t be surprised when I make a best food manga list and yeah sorry Food Wars won’t be on it.
But fr, even if you don’t love the food manga genre try it!! It’s a sweet series and mixes domestic with fantasy in a great way.  Plus only a few series are complete, with the rest being on-going, so if you want a complete and finished series try this one!

The Duke's Fiancee, Why She Had to Go to the Duke by Milcha (Story) and Golae (Art)
When Park Eunha dies in modern-day Korea, she awakens in the body of Raeliana McMillan, the eldest daughter of a nouveaux riche baron. However, this is no ordinary world; it's the exact same one as a novel she once read. Beloved by her family, it would seem as though she is in a fairy tale. But Raeliana is far from the main character—she is a mere plot device, whose murder at the hands of her fiancé instigates the entire story.
Raeliana has no intention to accept her fate quietly. She sets her eyes on someone in a position of great power—the vieux riche male protagonist Duke Noah Volstaire Wynknight—aiming to completely change the original story. Using her knowledge of future events, Raeliana offers information to Noah on the condition that he acts as her fake fiancé, but the Duke's two-faced nature throws a wrench in her plans!
Tumblr media
Why *I* like it:  This one is a fun one!! It really plays with different concepts that don’t often get explored in reincarnation isekai like where did the original consciousness of the character the MC became go??? Because MC only remembers her life on earth and is otherwise treated as though she has amnesia.... But is it amnesia?  Is she another person entirely?
Also the humor is... great.  Listen I refuse to give the best joke in the series just to make you read it but... the series is worth it just for this running joke.
Of course the romance is good too. The dude is kinda an asshole but she gives as good as he dishes out and it quickly becomes flirting anyway.  I don’t want to say too much and give any thing away... but s’good!

Who Made Me a Princess? by Plutus (Story) and Spoon (Art)
The beautiful Athanasia was killed at the hands of her own biological father, Claude de Alger Obelia, the cold-blooded emperor! It’s just a silly bedtime story… until one woman wakes up to suddenly find she’s become that unfortunate princess! She needs a plan to survive her doomed fate, and time is running out. Will she go with Plan A, live as quietly as possible without being noticed by the infamous emperor? Plan B, collect enough money to escape the palace? Or will she be stuck with Plan C, sweet-talking her way into her father’s good graces?!
Tumblr media
Why *I* like it:  Ok, big sigh.  How do I explain the pull ‘Who Made Me A Princess?’ has on me?  Now a lot of the pull for many people is how cute the budding father daughter relationship the MC (Athy) has with her dad.  But like, her dad is the worst and I want to fight him.  On the other hand, most of the fandom hates Jeanette, the MC’s sister who has done literally nothing wrong except make everyone around her miserable but it’s not her fault ok, and I’ll fight the entire fandom in her honor.  So it pains me to rec this series knowing that more than likely anyone who picks up this series because of me might have Wrong Opinions and I invite you to tell me just so I can shake my head about another wrong person existing in this world.
Never the less, this series is very cute!  All the other series I have recced had the MC remember their past life at early childhood at the earliest, if not as a teenager.  Athy? She has the misfortune to remember as a *baby* and it’s exactly as hellish as it sounds for an adult to be stuck growing up as a baby and suffer through the absolute embarrassment of having people feed and wipe her ass.
The MC was an orphan in her previous life and the book that she wakes up in is a shitty book even by her standards but then she really only skimmed it it sounds like that’s what interests me.  As Athy makes changes to the original events of the novel and depth is added to the world, I start to wonder if the added depth was in the original novel or if the world had to add its own depth to stand as an actual lived in world?
Additionally, since I made the cover image Athy and her dad you might as well see her with her 2 love interests (and Jeanette!).  People need to know who to ship, I get it.
Tumblr media
Also I need a moment to appreciate, up close, the beauty of Athy’s eyes. So gorgeous.

Living as the Tyrant’s Older Sister by Aperta (Story) and Chyobab (Art)
When I opened my eyes, I was inside a fantasy novel world! The beauty I see in front of the mirror is the future tyrant’s older sister, Alicia! She’s not even a protagonist or an antagonist, but a character that doesn’t appear much and gets beheaded by the (upcoming) tyrant little brother. My life is all about escaping that fate from the novel. In the end, I seduced the male lead’s merchant friend who also doesn’t appear much and was about to leave the country with him. How-e-ver. The face of the man who spent the night with me was extraordinary, and was the male lead himself!
Tumblr media
Why *I* like it:   ……………...keke. Ok so this one is one I like just for the laughs.  The love interest is an arrogant asshole, but see… The important detail the summary leaves out is that the MC’s… cousin (?) wrote the book that she woke up in!  Moreover she’s the one that told her cousin to change the MC of her novel and make him good at everything and also make him a freak in the sack.  Like who is really at fault here??? Lmao.  Especially when she goes out intending to seduce a character she remembers being rich from the novel and accidentally bags the MC from the novel, aka the dude who kills her and her brother in the original novel.
In seriousness though, it really is funny.  The facial expressions of the MC is just… chefs kiss.  She’s got a pretty face but then she makes all these goof ass faces and I love it.  If you need any more reason to at least give it a go, just know that at one point the male lead comes to check on her, expecting to find her crying and instead…. Walks in just as she screams FUCK at the top of her lungs and then begins a tirade of very creative curses including "Bitch oompa loompa ass bitch" which how can you not love her?  Anyway the face the male lead makes after that has me maintaining that’s the moment he fell in love with her lmao.. but this is not Confirmed so it’s not a spoiler!!
Tumblr media
EDIT: as of August 2020, I’ve since dropped this series. It remains on the list since I’d still rec it to people looking for a laugh.

Seduce the Villain’s Father by bia and dalseul
Upon opening my eyes after a bus accident, I found myself in the fantasy world of a webnovel I enjoyed reading... the only catch is, I reincarnated 20 years before the novel begins! Reborn as Princess Yerenica of the small Lebovny kingdom, I'm determined to change the future in order to prevent the series of unfortunate events that will soon occur!
Tumblr media
Why *I* like it:   How many times have you yourself had a suuuuuper side character be your favorite in a series and be depressed to see them done dirty?  Well MC has a chance to fix that, to save a character that basically one appeared in prologue and basically prevent the birth of the villain character that later kills his own father… by seducing his dad, before he can marry the villainess!!
Yerenica is just adorable in her attempts to thwart the original novel.  And like, I have to give her lots of respect for seeing the villainess character and having herself a good moment where she had to consider seducing her instead lmao.  She knows when to let well enough alone though so she immediately boards back on the dad train, much to his chagrin because she keeps calling him father……………….. Even though he’s like…. Not a dad yet.
The characters are still relatively early on in their romance, but I have high hopes for it yet!
Edit: As of August 2020, I’ve dropped this series.  It remains on this list because I think it’s a cute series and I think anyone who feels really strongly about the main couple will enjoy it.

Death Is the Only Ending For The Villainess by Gwon Gyeoeul and SUOL
Penelope Eckart reincarnated as the adopted daughter of Duke Eckart and the villainess of a reverse harem dating sim. The problem is, she entered the game at its hardest difficulty, and no matter what she does, death awaits her at every ending! Before the "real daughter" of Duke Eckart appears, she must choose one of the male leads and reach a happy ending in order to survive. But the two brothers always pick a fight with her over every little thing, as well as a crazy crown prince, whose routes all lead to death. There's even a magician who's enamoured with the female lead, and a loyal slave knight! But somehow, the favourability meters of the male leads increase the more she crosses the line with them!
Tumblr media
Why *I* like it:   So this one is another relatively new one added to my list, but it’s shot high up rather quickly!!  The other otome game isekai’s that I have on my list are just like the real world, but the interesting thing about this one, is that it also retains otome game mechanics such as she can see the love interests love meter and also she can chose to use the video game script choices to reply to the characters, in the hopes of raising their love meter.  This adds challenge, since she knows that if she gets any of the dudes to -10 she’ll be killed even as she sort of wonders if she truly would die or wake back up in reality.
What’s interesting also is that while she is the villainess character in the game… It ends up that the character was actually abused for years and that her title as a villain is unfair and that the game can be played as the villainess as even a player as a ‘hard’ mode compared to the heroine character.  It’s up to her to turn things around and it’s actually a fun take on the villainess genre.  I’m really looking forward to how things proceed even as my fears about which dude she’ll end up with continue to increase.
Finally, another layer I enjoy is that the MC lead a similar life in her previous life.  She’d only just escape her own abusive family before she’d ended up here and MC just desperately wants to escape once again… using any means necessary.

The Villainess Reverses the Hourglass by SanSobe (story) and Ant Studio (art)
With the marriage of her prostitute mother to the Count, Aria’s status in society skyrocketed immediately. After leading a life of luxury, Aria unfairly meets death because of her sister Mielle’s schemes. And right before she dies, she sees an hourglass fall as if it were a fantasy. And just like that, she was miraculously brought back to the past.
“I want to become a very elegant person, just like my sister, Mielle.”
In order to face the villainess, she must become an even more wicked villainess. This was the new path Aria chose to take revenge on Mielle who murdered both her and her mother.
Tumblr media
Why *I* like it:   If you thought that this list might be in descending order, guess again!  This one is one of my favorites.  Now this one lacks isekai, but is a reincarnation of a villainess!! Rather the MC was an absolute horrible person in her past life, but finds out at the last minute that her ~pure~ sister had been leading her by nose into acting like a brat just seconds before she is executed.  Now that she has a second chance, she’ll be a proper villainess and turn the tables on her sister.
In her last life, Aria never bothered educating herself so now that she’s a teenager again she actually has to learn things again (it’s not just like she gets to act like she’s a genius and good at everything) but she works hard at maintaining a sweet image and making everyone love her, even as she snickers behind their backs, all the while subtly setting her sister up for failure.
This is a proper revenge story, I’m promised by those who read the LN!! Revenge stories about women are rare to come back, especially one that doesn’t make revenge look like a total evil thing lol.  What can I say, I have my interests.  Anyway, it’s super cathartic to watch Aria slowly unfold her masterplan to foil her sister’s plans and take everything that her sister had cherished in her previous life. And all that not to mention the certain powers that Aria later discovers she has at her disposal... :3c

Beware of the Villainess by Bbongdda Mask (story) and Pureunkanna (art)
I became the villainess of a novel! Do I hate it? No! I find it rather nice. A duke’s daughter equals a jobless rich person. How can I miss out on a chance like this?! This is the best chance to just enjoy life. I should throw out the main plot and just live life how I want to! Not long after waking up as the villainess, I witnessed my fiancé, the crown prince and the novel’s male lead, cheating. I saw him embrace a lady other than I and he was smiling so bright. I was brought to tears… Just kidding, I didn’t cry! My tears are worth too much to be wasted on that garbage. Instead of tears, I yelled out, “Your highness, are you trash?”
Tumblr media
Why *I* like it:   Listen there are 2 ways to react to waking up as a villain of a series you once read… Either you turn the tables and become a good guy OR you can embrace it!  The world the novel is based on has the basic premise of the pure and good heroine winning the affection of 4 bratty, horrible men.  MC is the fiance of one of them and says fuck that.  She also has some thoughts that none of these dudes deserve the heroine of the novel but this one is still pretty early on so the jury still out on if she’s going to save this poor girl from her fate of ending up with any of these absolute assholes.
This one is along the veins of the previously mentioned Living As the Tyrant’s Older Sister, in that the pull for this series is even less of the romance and more about the comedy aspect… Also MC’s facial expressions are…. Choice.  Just so good. Enough with pretty girls making pretty faces!!  We need more girls being ugly.  It’s what we deserve.  Yell at cheaters!!!!!! Tell them to fuck off!! Yes please.

Accomplishments of the Duke’s Daughter by Reia (Story), Umemiya Suki (Art)
Although she had reincarnated as the daughter of a Duke's house, by the time she regained her memories, the Ending was already here.
"After he cancels my engagement, the story would have me confined to a church. Where can I find my happy ending?"
Tumblr media
Why *I* like it:  I never read or watched Wolf and Spice but I imagine this is isekai Wolf and Spice… Well it’s got a lot about the economy at least lmao.   That’s literally the only thing I know about Wolf and Spice.  Anyway!!  The twist in this one is that the MC remembers her past life just as she’s about to be exiled, the end of the original game.  What the series focuses on is her life afterwards, as she scrambles to grab at any semblance of a good life… And she does so pretty quickly!
Her past life comes in handy as she sets to work managing a dukedom and fixes the economy!!  Moreover, even though it pains my heart whenever two women are pitted against each other… It does a great job of putting into question the original heroine’s pure shtick as she spends extravagantly on dresses and would rather just donate to the poor one day, instead of Iris the MC who sets to work on fixing the economy and creating jobs for the poor and putting money into bettering their lives in the long run, rather than throwing money at them and running.  Also, she’s grabbed the attraction of a mysterious man who takes a job helping her even though he is a prince aka the brother of her ex-fiance who he is fighting for the crown for.
-
And that’s it!! My list for now!! Tbh by next month there’ll likely be even more faves as I continue to add more and more series to my read list lol.  Because this isn’t even a fraction of all the reincarnation isekai series I’m into, just the best for certain reasons.
BTW, if you’re like... wow this list sure is straight then true unfortunately. I’m waiting for the day “I Favor The Villainess” gets adapted somehow.  Also there are several isekai in which a straight girl reincarnates into a yaoi novel but I haven’t found a true gem among them yet.

⭐️! For anything from Fen’Harel’s Teeth!
thanks for the ask! :) So when I think about everything I’m doing right and wrong with this story, I go back to this conversation from Ch. 7:  ----------------------------  Varric poured himself a cup of java. “Nice shit, Tiny. From Seheron? I had a friend who fought there.” “Yeah?” Iron Bull said. “What’d he do there?” “Kill a lot of people and have a breakdown. You’d like him.”Bull snorted. “I have to say, this is not what I thought the military wing of the Orlesian Chantry would be like. Much more elfy, and dwarfy, and demon-y...how has that guy Solas not been made Tranquil yet?” “Sheer charm,” Imladris said drily. “And that he’s the only one in Thedas who has calculated Veil warp against mana frisson--he sat down and wrote out exactly how much mana we will need to expend to heal the Breach, from his studies of Fade rifts. And I’ll burn this town down if they dare try. Ah! Speak of the Dread Wolf and he shall appear.” Solas stopped short of the table and stared. He began to back away slowly. Imladris blinked. “A Marcher saying--sorry. I didn’t realize you took Fen’Harel so seriously.” He would deride the Dalish for the superstitions, but snap back as hard as any pious Keeper at the mention of Fen’Harel. “I apologize. We’ve always...my clan is not the most reverent of the People.” “It’s fine,” Solas sat down next to Varric. He wrinkled his nose at the java pot, and reached for his usual, the tureen of gruel. He had simple tastes but for his sugar intake. “I gathered as much. Religion, after so much displacement, disperses into folklore and the occasional superstitious ejaculation.” “Ejaculation,” repeated Iron Bull quietly. Imladris kept her face bland. Hedge mages, Fen’Harel take them: who had taught him to speak Common? “You talk like a book,” Varric informed Solas, stabbing a piece of sausage. “Like a Ferelden book of manners. A bad one.” Solas began to mix honey into his gruel. “Would you prefer I mimicked your novels? I could attempt to be a hardboiled detective, dissipated and down-at-the-heel--” “See, Chuckles,” Varric pointed his fork at him, “I would never use that phrase. I’d just use a simile. He slunk in, like an alley cat beaten after the rain.’ Much more descriptive, see? And more how people actually talk. Keeps the story following, you don’t get stuck in endless dialogue or reflection that way. Verbs, that’s the way to go.” -----------------------------------------  I have a habit of getting lost in the characters just talking and completely forgetting the plot, and I could not get this goddamn chapter (and whole arc, to be honest) to end. So I had Varric read me for filth, and it was very satisfying. This was the hardest chapter to write, but it's where I think I finally got Imladris' character and she stopped being the Noble, Suffering Revolutionary and someone who's got a sense of humor but is a prickly asshole, kinda a shitty mom and not really coping well with the past five years of her life. Everything before this had been written in a very quick, somewhat disassociative haze. But this is where the roots of the conflict start sprouting--and where the writing gets better, too.  But I'm so delighted with this conversation. I love domestic scenes, I love just thinking about Varric and Iron Bull and Solas all grumbling at each other in the morning--this is what I wanted from the game, and I'm pleased with how I indulged myself. I don't really like action (or plot), I just like watching people talk, and I'm really proud of how I got the characters here. Even if it is totally irrelevent to the plot. But yeah: all the flaws here. A tendency to ramble, to focus on character development and dialogue and setting over actually fucking plot, taking forever to get to the point...but once I teased myself through this conversation, I hit my stride. And now Arc I: The Hinterlands Never End (how it's labelled in my Google Drive!) is over, and shit's going to get real, and I've learned from my melodramatic high fantasy mistakes and found a happy medium of stream-of-consciousness and less archaic accents!

Thoughts on “Terror of the Arctic” (2005), aka, “I listened to the Doctor Who audio drama episodes about the lost Franklin Expedition so that you don’t have to!”
Alright terror-friends, this was not how I expected to spend my day, but I have now listened to all eight episodes of the 2005 Doctor Who Audio Drama series “Terror of the Arctic,” featuring all of the ~ familiar ~ icy ~ boys ~ meeting the infamous Doctor.
With arguably more horrifying sexist/racist content than the 2007 Simmons novel, this audio drama actually predicted a lot of the tropes that Simmons popularized, including ship-board conflicts that escalate to stabbings, the appearance of supernatural creatures from Inuit oral traditions, and even a squick-y romance between Crozier and a much younger Inuit woman.
To clarify, I do not recommend you listen to these episodes. They’re a hot mess, and a really jarring departure from the beauty of The Terror (2018).
HOWEVER I highly recommend you look below the cut for episode-by-episode notes about the first Franklin Expedition adaptation that has well and truly driven me up the wall. So, welcome to the world of “Terror of the Arctic” (2005), featuring:
Crozier, (pronounced "Crow-zee-eyy,”) a polite door-mat of a captain with an agonizing lack of snark and minimal personality beyond “the only white man who can magically fix racism.”
Fitzjames the “proper English officer” who has every prejudice you can imagine – and a couple more you can’t.
Le Vesconte, the irrepressible lad with an inexplicable American accent and extreme boy-scout-gone-crazy energy.
Sgt. Tozer, who has a bad habit of punching people in the face even though his superior officers haven’t yet told him he’s allowed to do so.
Also featuring: Cybernetic Tuunbaq aliens! Complete breakdown of shipboard protocol! Expected amounts of cannibalism! And more! (spoilers, obviously)
Episode 1
– We start with a mandatory brief appearance from the Doctor and his companion Christine. I don’t (initially) hate this iteration of the Doctor – he’s very paternalistic and old-fashioned, but at least the voice actor’s competent. Christine’s voice, tragically, is high-pitched beyond all reason and laced with a variety of odd dialectical features. Some quick research reveals she’s supposed to be a 15 year old from medieval England. She sounds neither like a teenager nor a medieval person. From the very beginning, her character seems very infantilized, and plays into a lot of the Born Sexy Yesterday tropes, even if she and the Doctor aren’t a thing.
– Next, we have Sir John Franklin giving the “we’ve been stuck in the ice for nine months, here’s what you missed” sum-up.
– Sir John’s voice is gravelly 👏 as 👏 fuck; also, I don’t think that the phrase “to sugar-coat it” was a common 1840s expression? Correct me if I’m wrong history folks.
– Crozier shows up to give his “we should start walking out now” speech, minus any passion or conviction whatsoever; he bends immediately to Franklin’s whims. Crozier’s voice is quite high-pitched, and Sir John pronounces his name “Crow-zee-eyy.” (Update: everyone pronounces it this way!!! Uhmmm!) Though I struggle to judge accents, Crozier’s Irish accent sounds... leprechaun-ish. It’s not Jared Harris by a long mile.
– Not gonna lie, I kind of love how much Fitzjames sounds like a posh bastard. He immediately gets into a one-sided shouting match with Crozier and has to be reprimanded by Franklin.
– Lieutenant Irving appears on the scene; I don’t know what Irving’s accent is, but it sure is something.
– All of the officers seem to currently be on the same ship for some reason but I don’t know why. We’ve met Sir John, Crozier, Fitzy, and Irving, and Gore’s been mentioned, as have doctors Peddie and Stanley. And they’re all in the same boat. Guess we’re just ignoring Terror for now?
– Franklin begins narrating as he writes in the log-book: “11th June, 1847.” Oh BOY guess what day it is!!
– RIP Franklin (surprise, surprise). We have no real idea yet how this has happened.
– Fitzjames, talking to Sir John’s mysterious corpse: “Captain, what could have done this to you?”
– Fitzjames: “We have a killer loose on this ship” (Fitz gets ALL the best lines, apparently. Do they make sense? No. Are they hilarious? Yes.)
– Irving is shockingly nonchalant when the Doctor and Christine appear from nowhere out on the ice. Why is Irving so chill when he thinks that these two people are the lone survivors of a DIFFERENT failed expedition?
– Fitz apparently has refused to let Crozier start the walk-out after Franklin died. (Um, that’s not how the chain of command works?)
– We learn that Beechey-boy Braine apparently died of sudden-onset-scurvy. What is sudden-onset-scurvy, you ask? We do not yet know.
– Irving, happily describing their recent course of action: “...Ignoring the advice of our ships’ ice masters...” Oh god Irving don’t sound so happy about that. Blanky’s going to take an ice-axe to your head. (Tragically, Blanky does not appear in this show.)
– Lieutenant Gore has ALSO died of sudden-onset-scurvy. RIP Graham Gore.
– Is the Doctor going to focus on the existence of sudden-onset-scurvy? No, we’re gonna hyperfixate on the high officers-to-crew death rate! And he’s going to infodump about officers’ privileges TO Irving, an officer, and muse about how odd it is that more officers than crew are dying when the officers get all the best food!
– Fitz, the “proper English officer” apparently has managed to get about half the men to refuse to follow the orders of their expedition commander, because he happens to be Irish. Babe, this is a really bad look!
– Irving, our good Christian Irving, just swore “By Jove” in a weirdly sexy voice.
– Tozer has Extreme Deep Voice.
– Irving: “There’s something odd about them I just don’t trust.” Why on earth wouldn’t you trust two strangers who wandered up to you on the ice and asked if you were “human,” John Irving? What’s “odd” about that?
– The Doctor only remembers that he does actually know the events of the Franklin expedition after he reads the entire Victory Point Note.
– Irving has suddenly decided to threaten to shoot the Doctor and his companion. Irving promptly gets attacked.
* jarring transition to triumphant Doctor Who music *
Episode 2
– The ~mysterious~ attack on Irving has left weird wounds on Irving’s neck. I’m calling it, Ice Vampires!
– We have an Edward Little appearance! His voice is so sweet and gentle! And then... “I’ll have Sergeant Tozer shoot you both where you stand!” Okay, maybe not... (Update: Little is, in fact, very awful to several people. As we will see, all of the lieutenants and marines swing between weirdly nonchalant dudes and trigger-happy maniacs.)
– Tozer just punched the Doctor’s lights out, unprompted.
– Crozier: “Good old John Peddie... he’s like a brother to me.” Well THAT’S not a friendship I expected.
– So Dr. Peddie has brought a young Inuit woman in to Crozier’s cabin to have a “lovely chat.” Awkward book!Crozier/Silna energies. The woman’s name is Liak. She speaks with a vaguely Spanish and/or Italian accent.
– Liak: “I have been with my tribe. They would not allow me to come back to see you.” /  Crozier: “Why? It’s not because of Fitzjames is it?”
– (It’s not because of Fitzjames. It’s because of evil spirits, obviously.)
– The Doctor, once they get back to the ships, explaining to the higher officers what’s happened: “Mr. Tozer got all excited and could no longer restrain his Neanderthal-like impulse to start clubbing things.” Boy this by show is NOT for Tozer fans. (Note: Tozer is standing right there? In the room? When the Doctor says this?)
– The Doctor just dropped an f-bomb?????????? And not as an expression of shock, but a hard-core sexual use of the f-bomb. Literally, he said “you can let Tozer fuck me again” – did I mishear this????????????
– Irving’s dying words: “I was attacked by a large silver creature with claws!” Wait did Dan Simmons rip off a fan-made 2005 Doctor Who Audio Drama?
– RIP Irving, first confirmed victim of “Tuunbaq the First.”
– Fitzjames is SO racist, throwing around a lot of “savage” and “barbarian” words. Why are you letting this man walk all over you, Crozier?
– Crozier: the first person who has the correct reaction to two weirdos appearing on his boat (aka shock and surprise, rather than worrying nonchalance followed by unprompted extreme aggression.)
– Fitzjames literally laughed after being informed that Irving is dead. (Like Crozier’s bad Raft of the Medusa joke, but SO MUCH WORSE.)
– RIP Ice Master Reid, actual first confirmed kill of “Tuunbaq pre-Tuunbaq,” several weeks ago, apparently??
– Okay so Fitz here is obviously meant to be a horrible person, but I have to acknowledge that he’s making a few good points: (1) the Doctor has admitted that he has a “sailable” ship, and it’s pretty rude of him to not even explain why he’s unwilling to help these dying men, and (2) it’s been bothering me the whole episode that the Doctor hasn’t been calling officers by their titles, and frankly, I do think Fitz is within his rights to demand the Doctor call him “Captain Fitzjames” rather than “Mr. Fitzjames” on Fitz’s own ship. Like, it’s not that hard.
– The Doctor’s first example of “ways the Franklin crew could mess up the time stream” is the insane scenario: “what if one of them married the mother of Winston Churchill.”
– The “Tuunbaq: The Prequel” can talk!!!!!! “Hello meat!!!” it says, gleefully.
– Tozer is just the fucking most. He punched the Doctor AGAIN.
– Crozier just “Mr. Fitzjames”ed Fitz!! And Fitz backed down! Crozier finally grew a spine! Just in time to decide to commandeer the Doctor’s ship.
– The Doctor’s ship inevitably disappears before it can be commandeered. Because of course. (Things and people disappear and get transported to different places and later times all through these episodes for timey~wimey~reasons.)
Episode 3
– A conversation between the two named female characters (Liak and the Doctor’s companion Christine)! What will they talk about? ...Their dead fathers. Ah. Hmm.
– This show is not sophisticated enough to handle a “white man’s disease killed my father” subplot. And yet, Liak’s father died of TB he contracted from the white men. I’m *worried*
– To help Liak overcome the superstitious antagonism of her “tribe” after her father’s death, Crozier apparently gave a bunch of food to the Inuit, which is  an... interesting take. (One Irishman’s grand gesture fixes racism!)
– Magical Inuit shaman powers are only inherited through the male line (The racism and sexism in this is palpable.)
– So “Tuunbag Episode I: Revenge of the the Tuunbaq” is actually a larger coalition of aliens, run by a being called “Matriarx.” Can we decide whether woman are powerless victims or power-hungry monsters, please? Both is just greedy.
– RIP Strong (another tragic case of the triple threat: sudden onset scurvy, lead poisoning, AND Tuunbaq attack)
– Wait WAIT the Tuunbaq gave Strong the lead poisoning AND the scurvy by biting his neck and sucking his blood, stealing nutrients and leaving lead in their place: Ice Vampires!! I called it!!!
– Groups of people Fitz has verbally degraded: the Irish, the Inuit, all women, and now “common folk.”
Episode 4
– Le Vesconte’s first lines! He sounds like a Boy Scout, by which I mean he sounds about 16, and has an American accent? Also, Fitz pronounces his name “Leh-vay-cont”
– An AB named “Seeley” is writing an account of the events that are happening, perhaps as this show’s version of Bridgens and/or Peglar? Also Fitz is REALLY opposed to Seeley writing this, because Fitz hates “common folk” that much, apparently?
– RIP Seeley, we hardly knew ye.
– Major episode events: the walk-out begins, leaving Terror and Erebus just as the boats slip into another dimension because of alien reasons (this didn’t age well, now that we have the shipwrecks). Also, there’s an Inuit woman who is in league with the cybernetic-alien-Tuunbaq-vampires.
Episode 5
– As soon as the walk-out begins, the cybernetic-alien-Tuunbaq-vampires begin attacking.
– Boy Scout Le Vesconte: “I have an idea! If bullets won’t stop them maybe an axe will!” I mean, this is stupid enough for our Dundy, but he follows it up with “Murderers! I’ll hack you to pieces!” and rushes them like a child and has to be rescued. (Also Crozier is way WAY more concerned for Le Vesconte than Fitz is, though Fitz leaps into the rescue effort and Crozier... does not do that. He’s doing a lot of standing on the sidelines and bemoaning his dying men.)
– Peddie is basically just Crozier’s all-purpose lieutenant at this point. Little and Hodgson whomst?
– Le Vesconte, Fitz, and Tozer get struck by lightning WHILE fighting the Tuunbaq, and some Frankenstein stuff seems to happen, because Fitz now has the munchies. But like, the ominous munchies.
– Le Vesconte’s in something like a coma. The dumb boy-scout.
– While explaining why the Netsilik have legends about these aliens as “evil spirits,” the Doctor implies that errors in the historical record happen “especially” in oral traditions. Can we stop insulting the Inuit oral historians please?
– The cybernetic-vampire-aliens can mind-control their victims sometimes. Calling it now: Fitzjames is under the mind-control already.
– Liak is revealed to possibly be in cahoots with the aliens, because she has a necklace that her sister gave her that’s actually an alien tracker.
– Fitzjames, upon learning that Liak may be in league with aliens, attempts to physically kill her with his bare hands, and has to be restrained.
– Crozier hears murmurs about mutiny, and assigns this poor Marine named Hopcraft to find out more about the mutiny and report back to him. Next morning: RIP Hopcraft, first victim of the “we’re knifing each other” stage of events (aka this show’s Irving.)
Episode 6
– Lieutenant Little, who got separated from Fitzjames and Crozier, tries to comfort ship’s boy Chambers, whose use of the term “panic attacks” is a little anachronistic; a small gripe in the grand scheme of things.
– The Tuunbaq-aliens attack Little’s camp and wipe them all out, leaving Little to the last. Edward Little, a British Christian naval officer in the 1840s, gasps out “I’ll see you in Hades” as his dying words. (Someone write me Little/Irving neo-pagan fanfic for this mess?)
– The Doctor is playing detective, trying to solve Hopcraft’s death. He finds footprints, and both Liak and Tozer are missing.
– The Doctor calls attention to Tozer’s “enormous feet.” Weird.
– We have our first cannibalism! Perpetrated by Tozer, and uhhhh oh great we’re eating Dr. MacDonald for dinner tonight.
– Le Vesconte woke up from his coma just in time to brain Tozer to death.
– The Doctor: “There were no women’s bones at any of the sites [of the lost expedition remains]” that’s a hilarious comment given that one study suggesting as many as four female skeletons.
– RIP Le Vesconte, from his wounds, offscreen!! Nooo!!
– Tozer (and Fitzjames, and a few others), because they all got struck by the lightning, now have Frankenstein’s cannibalism curse. They all hunger for human flesh.
– Fitzjames is now a sneaky murderer-cannibal who manages to gain Crozier’s trust before turning around and trying to butcher him. As least my evil boy is smart?
Episode 7
– The big bad reveal: it’s Liak’s secret evil sister! (Just like Season 4 of Sherlock!) She’s been helping the Tuunbaq-aliens the whole time because she hates white men! Because they gave her dad TB and one of them broke her heart! Thanks, it’s bad!
– The Tuunbaq-aliens eat Liak’s sister anyway because they do not care.
– Liak, Crozier, the Doctor, and Christine are left to defeat the Tuunbaq-aliens.
– Fitz feels a little bad about eating people I guess? Also Fitz is “weak” and can’t resist his hunger and all those fun tropes.
Episode 8
– Fitzjames gets a redemption arc via heroic self-sacrifice narrative, complete with death via horrid gurgling. “He sacrificed himself in a last act of humanity.”
– The Doctor agrees to give Crozier a lift to somewhere a bit further south, on the assumption that Crozier will settle down with Liak and live with some “tribe” of other Inuit people that neither of them have ever met.
– There’s a parting joke about Crozier enjoying drinking wine that did NOT age well.
And that’s all, folks! Hope you... enjoyed?

Salma Hayek in Savages is One of the Most Underrated Movie Gangsters
https://ift.tt/3lSiG4h
“You thought I wouldn’t notice,” cartel boss Elena Sánchez (Salma Hayek) demands of her loyal caporegime Ludo (a physically and emotionally imposing Benicio del Toro). The brutal and effective killer does not defend himself when the head of his family, and boss of bosses, slaps him with the force of a bull whip. He doesn’t even flinch. That would mean death. Oliver Stone’s Savages may not be his most renowned mob movie offering, but Hayek’s drug lord is one of cinema’s most groundbreaking gangsters.
Stone is no stranger to iconic gangsters. He wrote the screenplay for Brian De Palma’s Scarface, which brought Al Pacino’s coke-fueled Cuban political asylum seeker, Tony Montana, into celluloid’s perennial rogue’s gallery. For his 2012 cartel twist of a gangster film, Savages, Stone let Hayek reset the template. Her Elena Sánchez is street smart, tech savvy and a wiz at business. Her venture is so cut-throat, her underlings sever heads in their enthusiasm. Sánchez commands that much loyalty. Her gang decapitates wayward members, rivals and other stray wolves to bring lambs into the fold. They capture the proceedings on video which they send as messages in introductory offers of hostile takeovers.
Our ostensible heroes in this environment are Ben (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and Chon (Taylor Kitsch), who’ve been friends since high school. Ben went to Berkeley and took botany classes; Chon went into the military and took seeds. The latter’s tour of duty in Iraq left him seething with trauma but well-trained tactically. His tour in Afghanistan left him tactless, but introduced him to the finest marijuana in the known world. The pair now run a multimillion-dollar cani-business in the era when the plant was on the verge of becoming legalized on the West Coast. They, and their mutual live-in girlfriend O (Blake Lively), are idealists, using their new wealth to invest in philanthropy. Sánchez’s cartel wants them to join the “family.” It is a renowned and venerable matriarchy.
Sánchez’s enterprise is larger than Vito Corleone’s in The Godfather, but then she is a wise and tough-nurturing godmother. Nicknamed La Reina, the boss of the Mexican Baja Cartel doesn’t merely conquer her competitors, she destroys idealism. To get the thing she wants, Elena kidnaps the thing Ben and Chon love most, O. This is a talent, discovering the things which people most treasure. When Tom Hagen reported back to his don in The Godfather, the family father discerned the Hollywood bigshot Jack Woltz loved his prized racehorse more than any other thing on earth. He sent a message.
Elena’s most potent message is a niche-meme of sorts. While streaming live footage of O in tortuous circumstances, she cuts to an animation of O’s head popping off, leaving an ever-increasing stain of blood which ultimately covers the screen. That’s her horse’s head. This is a message movie and that’s “the word.”  Hayek is a versatile performer. She brought black comedy subtlety to her roles in The Faculty and Dogma; sensual earth tones to Frida; and romantic fantasy into Once Upon a Time In Mexico. She ratted out her gangster boss in Everly, but made her bones as an assassin in The Hitman’s Bodyguard. Hayek has also proven herself a master thief, stealing From Dusk Till Dawn with one scene which she shared with George Clooney, Quentin Tarantino, and a snake. In Savages, Hayek is allowed to be something female characters are routinely denied: ruthless, amoral, and savage.
Hayek presents a straightforward boss with strong family values. Elena Sánchez took over the cartel after the deaths of her husband and twin sons, but there is no room for irony for the Black Widow character. Hayek expertly balances public bravado and private sorrow. Elena is wise, like someone who paid attention to the lessons of different generations. Warnings about getting high on your own supply, and underestimating the other guy’s greed, would sound perfectly natural coming out her mouth. She’s the antithesis of her prisoner, whom she calls Ophelia after sensing the young woman exudes the need for a mother’s accumulated knowledge. Elena’s own actual daughter similarly rejects the past in the movie, but this is a gangster film tradition, sadly. Every mob boss wants their children to move into a thriving legitimate world. Elena says her daughter is “ashamed of me and I’m proud of her for it.”
The gangland dictator’s only vulnerability is her teenage daughter. It is also Elena’s strength. A mob godfather chalks blood up as an expense. Elena, the mother, is not only capable of doing anything for her children, but also justifying any action because it is done for her children. She only took over the cartel because her son was weak and would have been killed. This makes her character fearless.
Regardless of the hard-bodied eye candy, Taylor-Johnson, Kitsch, and Lively are bland next to Hayek and del Toro, who see entitlement and philanthropy as disgusting conceits of wealth and soft privilege. Lively’s Ophelia is not a deep, William Shakespeare tragic figure. She’s Paris Hilton in a hemp halter top, a seeming trophy for the nouveau stoner rich. O neither shocks nor impresses the crime queen, whose got hideaways and mansions scattered internationally for whim or lam.
“There’s something wrong with your love story, baby,” wise mob boss Elena notes like she’s doling out favors at her daughter’s wedding. “They may love you but they will never love you as much as they love each other. Otherwise they wouldn’t share you, would they?” Their ménage a trois relationship is also seen as absolutely savage to del Toro’s Lado.
The Mexican gang think the gringos lack dignity, tradition, family, and honor. The Californians are appalled by the brutality of the narco-traffickers from south of the border where torture is a routine cost of doing the business. Local D.E.A. agent Dennis (John Travolta) puts his trust in graft. He skims profit from Elena, accepts bribes from her rival El Azul, as well as Lado, and Ben and Chon. Yet he is surprised when he gets bit on the hand at feeding time. “You stabbed a federal agent,” he moans as his faith is shaken in a scene reminiscent of the death of Mel Bernstein in Scarface. Sadly, it only expands Dennis’ jurisdiction.
It is noted in the film that Elena is counting on the reelection of a specific mayor to retain her power base in Mexico. Stone directed the 2009 documentary South of the Border, which presented the untold histories of leftist Latin American presidents. Savages, a commercial film, presents the cultural relationship between Anglo-Americans and Latinos in a way mainstream Hollywood films rarely attempt. Most of this is done through normalizing sequences which act as allegorical bridges, such as when Elena flips back and forth between English and Spanish when chastising Lado and the high-ranking cartel accountant Alex Reyes (Demián Bichir). She is as much a mob representative as when Lado greets Ben with a warm “Welcome to the barrio” as he lets him into his Tijuana hotel suite.
Elena brings an entirely new and unique reworking of the South American narco boss cliché. This is best illustrated with the most subtle of the film’s social commentary, delivered by del Toro, who’d previously won an Oscar for his role in the drug war film Traffic. When Lado drops by Dennis’ house, he’s backed by a landscaping crew packing chainsaws.
Savages is an adaptation of Don Winslow’s pulp fiction novel but only hints at the violence journalist Ioan Grillo wrote about in the book El Narco. The film is set in Southern California’s Laguna Beach, which is close to the province of the Sinaloa Cartel. The film says Elena heads the Baja Cartel, which has operated in the U.S. for years. Sandra Avila Beltran was known as La Reina del Pacifico, but Elena’s circumstances more loosely resemble Veronica Mireya Moreno “La Flaca” Carreon, the first known female leader of the Los Zetas gang of San Nicolas de los Garza near northern Mexico.
The authentic blend of known crime figures brings an immediacy to the character. Hayek’s realism registers subconsciously, adding shades to the gangster persona which blur into a real person. It also instills a real sense of peril. We worry about the antihero.

But never forget, Elena is a badass. Savages reflects the violence of the then-ongoing drug wars in Mexico. It looks real and feels painful. The first shot the audience gets of the cartel is a blood-slicked concrete floor, headless bodies and decapitated heads, and Lado in a Lucha Libre freestyle wrestler mask. Elena’s crew is one of the most efficiently lethal in the business. Anything less is unacceptable. Lado calls in a debt on lost years from a former attorney by shooting him in both knee caps. He retires Esteban, the henchman who watched over Ophelia while she was in captivity, because he is too soft.
One thing which separates Savages from the many drug war genre films is how Stone mixes media. He artfully moves through visual formats, color schemes, black and white grit, webcam and cell-phone video pixelation, though all of this is restrained when compared with Natural Born Killers. In that film, the villains were strong but powerless, hurled by forces beyond their control. In Savages, Elena exudes authority. “We didn’t make you an offer to hear a counteroffer,” she explains confidently, turning the screw on mere offers you can’t refuse. “We made you a deal to which we expected compliance.”
Stone is as fascinated by power as he is repelled by it. Like many gangster and Stone films, the mobsters at the center of Savages are allegories. Stone took on financial criminals in Wall Street, and here Elena’s cartel is likewise a modern corporation of sorts, putting the squeeze on the little guy. It’s the same thing real-life Bronx bootlegger Dutch Schultz did when he took over the Harlem numbers racket. The Sánchez expansion is the same as when the Corleone family moved in on Las Vegas. Elena muscles in during negotiations, dropping golden parachutes with balloon interests, percentages, sliding scales over three years, and other buzz-killing business school collateral damage. Even as talks deteriorate, Sánchez keeps a cooler head than Tony Montana and is able to strategize in the long term.
Her operations are brazen. When negotiations aren’t being carried out via computer, business is conducted in public, under the protective shield of a small squadron of snipers. Her hackers are as expert as Ben and Chon’s. All of this was within state of the art, real-time operations, which further solidifies Sánchez’s bona fides. Stone spent 15 months of combat duty in Vietnam, and assigned Kitsch to train with a Navy SEAL advisor during filming. Blakely told Collider she “met a little girl who had been kidnapped by the Mexican drug cartel.  We met people in, of all areas, the marijuana field.” Hayek spoke with members of drug gangs.
“I actually talked to some people involved in the cartel that described, on two different occasions, women that have gotten quite high in the cartel,” Hayek told Collider.  “As a matter of fact, they are incredibly efficient, much more so than men… The women are actually colder. The guy gets angry and thinks he has to do something, and the women are not like that. They are all about the business. They’re not about the vendetta, or who is more macho. They’re about getting things done.”
Elena Sánchez gets things done, and she does it with style. This is a real gangster policy which goes all the way back to Arnold Rothstein, who cleaned up street thugs like Lucky Luciano and Meyer Lansky, put them in suits, and taught them which forks to use at dinner. Dutch Shultz laid out a small fortune to outfit his outfit in the latest fashion. In Dead End, Baby Face Martin (Humphrey Bogart) shows off his silk suit, tailor-made.  The gangsters in Sergio Leone’s mob masterpiece Once Upon A Time in America wore wingtip collars. In American Gangster, Denzel Washington’s Frank Lucas blows his cover to drape himself in a chinchilla coat.
Hayek set Elena’s style in stone, wearing the same diamond necklace and silken black wig in every scene. “These women know they are going to be an icon and they create a character,” she told THR.  “These women design themselves. They don’t want to be versatile. They want you to always remember them.”
Elena Sánchez may only remember Ben and Chon by their nicknames, “Nothing Personal” and “Eat Shit Caviar,” but Salma Hayek presents an unforgettable cinematic crime boss. Savages lives up to its title because Hayek cultivates the untamed natural state with unnatural ease. Sánchez knows enough not to keep too high a profile on “most wanted” lists, but as a gangster, she should never be underestimated.
