prompt: @simp-legend: “Hii, congrats on over 6k followers! Can I request for the event Mastermind by Taylor Swift for Raven Darkholme/ Mystique from X-men with a romantic relationship. Thank you, and again Congratulations on 7.5k!”
Tumblr media
Raven was cool, calm, calculated at all times it seemed. Nothing got under her many skins she wore throughout the time you knew her, so it should have made perfect sense that you were just another mission in the grand scheme she was once apart of.
Then again, you stuck. She left that life behind, but she took you with her.
Erik had made you a target, another lost mutant he had hoped to recruit. It was Raven’s plan, all of it. The bar, the drinks, going home together. Like I said, calculated. You talked all night, couldn’t get enough of her—but truth be told, she couldn’t get enough of you, either.
It was frustrating to hear at first after spending years together, replaying the events of that night and wondering what was true and what wasn’t. Every touch was precise, every movement a show.
“Y/N, it was a long time ago. Erik—he was…he was persuasive. You knew him, too, you know that’s just how he works.” Raven reasoned with you once she admitted the truth. “What matters is that I realized how great you were after I met you. I’m glad that he sent me on that mission or else I would have never ended up with you!”
“But you didn’t mean it.” You coldly replied, feeling like her former self for a few moments. “That first night, I meant everything. But to you? It was all a game.”
“No. No, it wasn’t. I felt what you felt, I just tried to put it aside, I couldn’t. That’s why I’m still here.” You didn’t answer her, just stared down tat her hands as she waited for you. “Erik told me not to get attached. I didn’t listen. He got worse. I left. We left. I did it for you, you mean more to me than any of that did.” She waited for you to say anything or even look at her. She didn’t understand how something so far in the past could be so world-breaking for you, but when you looked up she saw tears in your eyes, she grabbed your cheeks and cupped them gently. “I love you. I have for a long time, and I don’t wanna see you cry over something like this and ruin what we’ve had.”
“It’s just a lot to take in, Raven. Feeling like what we built on was a lie.” You shakily admitted, lightly sniffling.
“But it’s not.” She held a bit firmer and kissed your forehead. “It may not have been exactly what you had in mind, but my feelings for you were never fabricated and will never be. You are the most important thing in my life and I will go anywhere with you, that’s why I’m here now.” You sighed and half-smirked to her, which eased her anxieties. “You understand?”
“I guess. Yeah, I guess.” You mumbled. “I just feel stupid.”

The Same | Raven Darkholme
Warnings. Plus size reader! Insecure reader. Fighting, angst
Summary. Raven and you fighting but then making up
Tumblr media
Growing up you were never really insecure
You grown to love your body and all the flaws, curves, and dimples it had. Until you started dating… men would always tell you that you should put full body pictures on your dating apps, or tell you that you should lose some weight, and that crushed your confidence.
Then you met Raven, you’d never explored your sexuality so, you never thought to try and date woman or see if your were interested in them, But Raven showed you that your were beautiful and it didn’t matter what other people thought, the only opinion that mattered was your own.
She always asked if you ate to make sure you weren’t trying to starve yourself because this person said that or the other person said this, she wouldn’t allow it. She’d tell you everyday that your beautiful and the guy that said otherwise is just reflecting on his own insecurities.
And that was just when you were friends, when you finally realized you had strong feelings towards her you didn’t know how to express them or confess to her, thankfully for you, she’s the one who caved in first.
When you started dating you guys would always compliment and give each other praises every single day, she made sure you didn’t have to doubt yourself everyday, and you made sure that she knew she’d always be beautiful in her blue skin, and you thought it was perfect, Devine actually , she was definitely not like any other person you met and that’s what you loved about her, she knew her worth and that if anyone told her different she would stand her ground and tell them off.
But this day in-particular, you couldn’t stand to look at yourself in the mirror, luckily raven quickly caught on that you were feeling bad, because when you have them days your always avoiding food and mirrors.
“Y/n baby, what’s wrong?” She asked in a soft tone when she heard you crying “it’s n-nothing” you sniffled wiping your tears and turning to smile at her “I know when something wrong y/n please just tell me” she looked at you with sympathetic eyes “it’s nothing you would understand raven” you snapped at her
She was shocked when you yelled at her, she felt saddened “what do you mean?” She asked in a shaky voice, but you glared at her for a moment “I’m fat raven, I’m ugly and you don’t understand what’s it’s like to be looked down on because of your appearance, I mean your perfect” you say looking away
“Y/n.” Shes says starting to get angry, why would you say that to her? When you know she knows exactly what it feels like to be stared at be whispered about, “I know what it feels like! I can’t even go in public, in my natural form! because people get scared of me and think I’m disgusting because I was born like this.” She yells
You automatically feel bad for what you said to her, because you do know she feels that why, you know that she comes home crying because she tried going out in her natural form and people ran away from her or that she just wants to be ‘normal’ and have people think good thoughts of her and think she’s pretty.
“Raven I- I’m sorry I shouldn’t have said that, it was wrong” you say trying to grab her hand but she quickly pulls it away “damn right it was” she states storming off into your shared bedroom.
You knew to wait until she cooled off, you two never really get into fights, but when you do she wants to be alone for awhile to get her head straight, and she feels betrayed right now, because you tried to invalidate her feelings, but she knew you didn’t mean it, so it’s a little less worse than what it could have been.
After you waited for a while, you decided you should go check on her
She was sitting on your shared bed just staring at the wall, you knew she was lost in her thought because I she didn’t seem to notice you walk in
You sit down beside her and in a soft tone you say “raven..I didn’t mean what I said, I know you know how I feel and I’m sorry I pushed your feelings aside. I promise I will never do it again” she looks at you with sad eyes “it’s okay, I love you y/n and I don’t want to fight like that again” she said taking you hand into hers
“I love you two raven” you share a soft kiss with her and hug it out, after that night you fully opened up to her about your feelings and she did the same, you learned that you can’t push aside other peoples feelings anymore.

Permanent Price chapter 1
Alex Summers x Mutant!OC
Summary: Isabella Darkholme, sister of raven Darkholme and Charles Xavier. Also a mutant. Her mutation allows her to blend in with the light rays, turning herself and whatever she's touching invisible. word count: 1280 warnings: none that I know of
series masterlist
Tumblr media
Isabella couldn't help but sigh softly as she watched her brother talk up another girl, not because she was jealous, but because she was bored of the same thing every time. She and raven always just sat back and watched him. Bella tried to talk to people - boys and girls - but Charles would always step in and pull her out. It was like he didn't want her to be happy. But she knew he was just caring for her and making sure she didn't get hurt, even though she was never able to even ask the person's name, that's how fast he was.
Raven could see the bored look on her sister's face so she thought she would distract her.
"Wanna' play truth or dare?" She asked making Bella smile. Raven was always the child. She loved playing games, whether it was board games or hide and seek. She just loved being a child. Especially playing tag or just chasing her other half around with a spider. Isabella loved that about her sister though, she never lost her sparkle.
"Sure." she dimly said.
"Okay, truth or dare?"
"dare." Belle loved playing this with raven, no matter how old they were she loved it.
"mmhm, okay. I dare you to go behind the bar and mess around with the bartender."
"ok, but I dare you to mess up Charles's date with that girl." She said with a smirk.
"That's not how the game works but fine."
Bella moved to the bathroom and turned herself invisible, whilst raven went over to Charles and the girl he was with to introduce herself. Bella went behind the bar and started tricking the man tending to a customer. She knew she had a limited amount of time before Charles would find her out so she knew to make it count. She created a tapping noise on a glass behind his ear to start with. He instantly turned around and walked through her. Thankfully she could not only turn herself invisible but anything she touched, she also could phase through objects and people when she was invisible.
Then she started whispering near his ear. Watching him freak out was hilarious to raven. This was not the first time pulling pranks like this. They really were children at heart and Bella loved it. Charles turned to look over at raven and Isabella's table. He saw raven smirking and looking to a specific spot behind the bar. He then looked over to the table raven was sitting at and saw that Bella wasn't there. That's when he knew they were pulling their little pranks again and decided to step in. He excused himself and walked near the back of the bar where he assumed Bella was.
Isabella, are you behind the bar again?
shit.
no. Why would you think that Charles?
because I see raven smirking and you aren't anywhere near her table. She is also looking at a very specific spot where there isn't anything to laugh at. I also know my sisters very well.
Bella sighed and walked to where Charles was and made herself visible again.
"Right. Get raven we are going." He said sternly.
"Look I'm sorry. We just wanted a bit of fun." She said softly before going to get raven.
"Yes, well you can have fun in different ways. There was no need to expose your mutation like that. What if you couldn't hold on long enough and someone saw you turn visible? what then?" He was clearly disappointed in them but she didn't care anymore. He wasn't the owner of them they could do what they wanted.
"He's mad at us again." She said to raven before walking back off to Charles and out the door.
"Don't talk to me. You did that on purpose." He said angrily once raven caught up with them.
"I did not! Why would I do it on purpose? We were just playing a game!"
"Yes, you did!"
"And you, that little stunt you pulled-"
"You know I can't control it sometimes if I'm stressed or tired."
"You seem to be doing a perfectly good job right now.-
"Mutant and proud." Raven started, imitating the girl Charles was with.
"What? Or is it only with pretty mutations or invisible ones like yours and Belle's? But if you're a freak, you better hide." Bella knew raven hated her mutation at times. Though bella thought it was a beautiful one, Raven never thought of it that way. Any time Isabella tried to tell raven she would just storm off and wouldn't talk to her for a whole day. She grabbed her sister's hand and squeezed it to comfort her.
"You're being ridiculous. I don't mean to sound like an old fart." -"Which you are."- "Sometimes. But we've talked about this, Raven. A small slip-up is one thing. A big one does not bear thinking about."
"Mutant and proud? If only." Raven said walking off and dragging her sister with her
That night, when they got home Belle went straight to her room without saying goodnight. She was sick of Charles deciding what she was able to do. She knew he was only caring for her but sometimes it got out of hand. She'd never had a boyfriend - or girlfriend, not like that was hardly allowed - or even her first kiss! And she was done. She wasn't going to let Charles dictate what she did. It was her life and she was going to live it.

Raven and Isabella sat quietly in Belles's bedroom, surrounded by silence. The air was thick with emotion as they both struggled to find the right words to express their feelings. They did this now and then. Sat together talking about their mother, childhood, or just in silence.
Finally, Raven broke the silence. "Do you ever feel like she's still here with us? Like she's watching over us?"
Isabella nodded, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. "All the time. Sometimes I'll be doing something, and I'll feel this presence like she's right there beside me."
Raven reached out and took her sister's hand. "It's funny, isn't it? How we can feel her presence so strongly, even though she's been gone for so long."
Belle sniffled and wiped away a tear. "I miss her so much. Sometimes I feel like I can't go on without her."
Raven squeezed her hand gently. "I know. But we have each other, we have Charles, and we have her memory. She may not be physically here, but she lives on in us, in our memories, and in the love she gave us."
Isabella looked up at Raven, her eyes brimming with gratitude. Raven smiled sadly.
"I wish I could take away the pain, but all I can do is be here for you, and honor her memory by living the best life we can."
Isabella nodded, a sense of peace washing over her. "You're right. She wouldn't want us to wallow in sadness. She'd want us to be happy and live our lives to the fullest. And NOT hiding or being scared of our mutation." She stated to her sister, sternly.
Their mother always made sure they were proud of their mutation. And she promised them that one day they wouldn't have to hide it.
Raven stood up and pulled Isabella into a tight hug. "That's right. And we will. Together."

Obvious [Part Four]
Prompt/Summary: You’re an empath, he’s a telepath. You might not be able to know what he’s thinking, but it doesn’t stop you from feeling it.
Pairing: Charles Xavier x Female Reader
Warnings: s m u t [shower sex, oral sex female receiving]
Word Count: 6,500. This was supposed to be a pretty short chapter. I don't know what happened
Previous Parts: One || Two || Three
Tumblr media
26 hours.
It was supposed to be better.  You’d told yourself it would be better.  Now that you and Charles had established it wasn’t a one-time thing and that he did like you.  It had been 26 hours since your encounter in his study and the only thing you could confidently decide on was that it was most certainly not better.
You were in the library, trying to read up on something - you couldn’t remember what - for Charles’ research.  It was cool and dark in your corner, the beams of light that usually illuminated the whole space were sliding down the far wall as the sun was setting.  Good you thought; you needed it cool and dark as you pressed your head against the wall you were next to with a groan.  Tracing the bruises along your collarbones you could have sworn he was in front of you, biting down on the soft flesh and your back ached as if he still had you pressed against the hard edge of his desk.  Images, filthy images, of what he had done to you just hours before were flashing through your mind on repeat and you felt drunk on the memories.  Your skin was still on fire, even after a cold shower and two naps.
To say that you were plagued by Charles Xavier would have been an understatement.  The hold he had on you now felt inescapable, as if your entire being was tuned into his bandwidth and you were stuck there like a bug in a spiderweb.  So much so that you were just slipping back into your thoughts, replaying the study encounter once more, when you heard the heavy oak door creek and footsteps on the floorboards. You shot upright, hastily grabbing the closest paper to you and trying to neutralise your thoughts before you were caught red-faced.  However, the voice that called out to you wasn’t the one you were expecting.
“Y/N, are you in here?”
Raven’s voice made you jump, much more than you’d have been willing to admit.  Papers slid off the narrow desk space as your knees smacked the underside with surprising force.  You scrambled to catch them, but even so, any composure you had was long gone so you kept your head down and busied yourself with collecting the debris surrounding you as you listened to Raven’s footsteps advance.  You knew you should have answered, but you couldn’t form the words; your mouth suddenly dry and tacky.  You decided you would rather face Charles after your sudden decision to run away a thousand times rather than confront his childhood best friend even once.
Raven rounded the last corner and stood at the end of the tall row of bookshelves you had squirrelled yourself away into, and you knew that you were completely powerless.  She was taller than you, stronger than you, and a much better fighter than you.  If she’d come to give you a piece of her mind, you thought, dying in a library didn’t sound like the worst way to go.  At least you would look cool, you consoled yourself, your dead body sprawled out amongst the ancient books.  You decided to steel yourself for the worst, sucking in what you assumed to be one of your last breaths and concentrating everything on your power.  You were rusty but with all the distractions lately, you had not been practising as Charles frequently told you to do.  Calm and friendly, calm and friendly, calm and friendly you repeated the mantra in your head, hoping and praying that even if you couldn’t reach her you were at least able to manipulate the atmosphere around you.
“Hi,” getting the word out took more than you were willing to admit.  Your voice caught in your dry throat and stuck to your teeth as you forced yourself to look up into her yellow eyes.  For a second you thought you saw a flicker of something that wasn’t pure hatred.
“I just-” she started, but her voice caught too.  She coughed.  It was short and sharp, her face turned to look out of the window where there was no longer any sunlight, her profile thrown harsh contrast as she did.  “I came to tell you dinner is ready,” as much as you hated to admit it, you were stunned.  Of all the ways you had imagined this going, it was the last thing you had expected.
“Oh, er, thanks,” you mumbled, embarrassed.  You hoped she couldn’t see your red face, but you knew better.
“We barely see you eat anymore, it’s worrying m- everyone…” she trailed off, but you knew she was right.  You had been regularly skipping meals, instead opting for snacks in the unsociable hours, and the few times you had managed to attend the group dinner times, you had spent them sitting picking at your food and waiting for it to end.
“Yeah, no, I’m-” it was awkward, and you didn’t need to be an empath to work that out.  The tension between the two of you was palpable and both of you were speaking as if every word had been carefully and delicately selected.  “I’m just gonna tidy up here and then I’ll come,” Raven gave a stiff nod of understanding.  She cast a sweeping glance over the mess in your corner and turned on her heel to leave.  Something gripped you and you found yourself finally acting like a normal person and speaking before thinking.
“Hey, Raven?” she stopped, didn’t turn but her shoulder twitched and you knew you had her attention.  “Thanks,” you hoped the word was enough, that it said silently all the things you needed to say.  You could have sworn you saw a minute nod before she continued on, and in two strides she melted into blue shadows.  You held your breath as you listened to her retreat until you heard the doors shut and alone in the library once more.
You let out the breath in a heavy sigh and tried to roll the tension out of your neck and shoulders.  Deciding that not showing up for dinner and having Raven find you for a further one-to-one talk was infinitely worse than whatever awkwardness was to be dealt with over dinner, you stayed true to your promise and quickly organised your research into a pile of books and a pile of notes stacked neatly on the desk you’d claimed as your spot.  Plus, there was a little tightening in your stomach at the thought of seeing Charles again.  Whilst you were glad that you could finally think about him without the sad weight of knowing what you’d had with him was a one-off thing, now you couldn’t stop thinking about the next time you’d get to have him.  Shaking your head you left the library and decided to head up to your room to wash up and change clothes quickly.
Dinner, as you discovered rapidly, was exactly what you needed to do.  Charles was finally out of the extreme absorption phase of his project and had decided that human interaction was necessary to some degree, so it was a full table.  Any nerves you had immediately faded when the chaos that was feeding a collection of late-teenage superheroes commenced.  Fighting for seats, fighting for plates, squabbling over serving sizes even though there was plenty to go around and then some.  You found yourself between Darwin and Charles himself.  You expected yourself to be haywire, as was the effect he usually had on you but instead you found a renewed confidence.  Maybe Raven knew you’d slept together, but as far as she was aware it was just the once and no one else gave any indication they knew what was going on between you and the young professor.  He acknowledged you with a warm smile, which you returned, before becoming engaged in your own spirited conversations.  Perhaps it was knowing that at the end of the day you were the one he was coming undone over, or maybe it was the way when his arm brushed yours you felt like you were full of static electricity.
You had to admit it felt good to be able to be yourself in the group once more, even as you had to duck to avoid a swiftly placed soundwave from Sean aimed at Darwin.
“Hey now,” it was Charles interrupting the ruckus with his rapidly developing teacher voice.  “No powers at the dinner table,” Sean muttered an apology but you didn’t miss the shit-eating grin shared between the younger boys, and neither did Raven who caught your eye when she realised you too had noticed.  For a fraction of a second, she flicked a smile at you, before turning her attention back to Hank and Erik.
“Actually, while I have everybody’s attention please,” Charles started again and you found yourself twisting in your seat to see his face better.  The knee that pressed itself against yours almost made you blush.  “As you will have noticed I have been rather preoccupied with some research, and I realise now that it was in error that I left you all to your own devices,” he cast a disapproving gaze around the small group, but there was a playfulness in him that told you he wasn’t serous “So, from tomorrow we will be going back to training.  One-to-one’s will be with me at the same time as we used to, and group training will be split between myself and Erik from now on,” there was a slight shift in the air at the mention of Erik’s name.
“But surely we don’t-” Raven began, but she was quickly shut down.
“Yes, you do,” Charles gave her a knowing look and she quietened down with nothing more than an eye roll.  “Tomorrow morning, 10 am.  I want to see everyone on the front lawn,”
You sighed internally, group training meant combat training and you had to admit that squirrelling yourself away and avoiding exercise in general had suited you over the last week.  Still, as the chatter died down and the group started to disperse after dessert, you found yourself with a pleasantly full stomach and looking forward to the following morning.
You weren’t sure what you were expecting from Charles that night, the exact details of your arrangement were still vague at least to you.  You knew he wouldn’t initiate in front of the others, so when you finally rose from the table and bid the remaining Raven, Charles, Erik and Hank good night you weren’t entirely surprised that you got nothing more than a ‘good night’ in return and eye contact that was held for perhaps half a second too long.  You waited around in your room for a little while, wasted time in the bathroom and then tried to occupy yourself with a book to see if he would come to your room, but he didn’t.  You supposed you could have called out to him telepathically, but you didn’t want to come across as desperate.  What you and Charles had established felt fragile, so early in its life that the slightest turbulence could shatter it.  You didn’t want to be constantly running to him, even if deep down that was what you wanted.  In the end, you could feel your eyes becoming so heavy that you slipped a bookmark into the leatherbound novel you were fighting your way through and drifted into an empty sleep.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You were glad you didn’t have any dreams that night because, much to your surprise, you woke up to your alarm clock on time and actually felt well-rested and ready to at least face whatever Charles had in store for you.
Your enthusiasm quickly wore off when you found the group of grey-sweatsuit-clad mutants on the front lawn, all eyeing up a suspicious pile of clutter on the lawn that Charles, also dressed in his sports clothes, was in the middle of.  You followed his movements for a moment and realised that it wasn’t a pile of junk, but some kind of pattern.  When you spotted the dumbbells your stomach sank right through to the floor.  The only thing you hated more than combat training was plain workouts.  Before you could finish the half-baked plan to sneak around the back of the house an amused voice spoke from the back of your mind.
“Don’t even think about it,”  You rolled your eyes, huffing playfully at the intrusion and deciding to show Charles that you were sulking with him by refusing to answer him, verbally and mentally.  You didn’t get a chance to see if he found you funny or not, and you tried to ignore the little twinge in your chest as he turned and said something to Erik, before calling the small group’s attention.
“Right, good morning everyone, I trust you all slept well,” Charles started, an almost alarming shine in his bright blue eyes.  There was an almost unanimous grumble.
“Why are we here, Charles?”  Raven cut him off, straight to the point.  Typically, Charles was unfazed and responded by rolling back onto his heels, hands folded behind his back, with a light chuckle.
“Thank you, Raven.  I thought we’d get back into the swing of things with something nice and easy, so today there are no powers involved.  It’s just a simple circuit.  Now I need everyone to split off into pairs,” Charles explained the basic premise of the training circuit he had set up.  It consisted of twelve ‘stations’ that you were to work around in pairs, each station having a different workout exercise to complete.  You were to do the full circuit three times each.  You had a feeling that you and Charles had different definitions of ‘nice and easy’.
There was a tap on your shoulder and you turned happily, expecting to see Charles waiting to partner up with you, however, the hand on your shoulder was blue.
“Wanna be my partner?”  You couldn’t stop the grin that broke out on your face, so relieved that Raven had sought you out once more, and was actually keen to work with you.  You accepted gratefully and moved to stand closer together.  You could have sworn you caught Charles watching the interaction from the corner of his eye.
Much to your surprise, the circuit training was suspiciously enjoyable, although Raven was largely to take responsibility for that.  After a few minutes of awkwardly working in silence, you couldn’t help but snort as you caught Alex collapse onto his face mid-push up.  Raven had spotted him too and before you knew it the pair of you were struggling to control yourselves through stifled giggles.  Charles had come over several times to remind the two of you that you were supposed to be focusing on moving your bodies, not your mouths, but Raven morphed into his form when his back was turned and started mocking him in an uncanny way that had you almost unable to stand you were laughing so hard.
It was the first time you had felt truly relaxed for as long as you could remember, and you were just having mindless, girly fun.  The exercises were none too interesting and you were capable of completing them all fairly easily, with Raven spotting you on some of the weighted exercises and then you did the same for her.  Charles passed you during the sit-up station, where you were actually pushing yourself and making good time.
“Nice form, Y/N,” his gaze felt suspiciously searing, and you had a feeling he was staring directly at your breasts and not your form at all.  The rapid wave of arousal that pierced the air around you and faded as he retreated was enough to confirm it.  Raven looked at you with raised eyebrows on your next rise.
“He was so staring at you,”
“He’s training us,” you responded, trying and most likely failing to sound nonchalant as you rose again.
“You know what I mean,” you tensed, trying to force yourself to continue and complete the set.  You weren’t sure how to react given that last time Raven had sussed out that there was something going on between you and Charles it had not ended well, so what came next completely threw you off.  “I think he likes you,”
You were glad your set ended and you were able to get up and swap positions with Raven, supporting her whilst she began her set of sit-ups.  You managed a non-commital shrug at her comment, but didn’t answer.
“Do you like him?”  she asked, her face was set and she was starting to pant through the exertion of the exercise, but there was no malice coming from her and the atmosphere hadn’t changed.  You figured it was safe to laugh.
“What are we, middle schoolers?”  That made Raven laugh too and the pair of you moved onto another station with a new topic, this time ‘Is Hank Actually Ripped Or Can He Just Lift That Much Because He’s Tall?’
By the time the session ended you were exhausted, sweating profusely alongside your peers and all out of breath.  For some reason, Erik knew and was able to lead a series of cool-down stretches, and then before you knew what was happening you were being dismissed to the showers.  You fell into step with Raven, bunched in the middle of the group surrounded by the slightly younger boys.
“It’s a shame there’s more than enough showers for everyone huh, Y/N?”  Alex caught your eye, a wicked grin making its way across his features.  If it was anyone else you would have panicked, but Alex’s room was close to yours on the second floor, and after two accidents where he had wandered into the bathroom that had been labelled yours instead of his, it had become a bit of a running joke that he was trying his utmost to see you naked.  You shoved his shoulder playfully and told him to try his luck with Hank instead.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Your bathroom was one of your favourite places in the house.  It wasn’t the biggest, but it was one of the few spaces that was all yours.  It, like most of the rooms in the house, had been decorated grandly, with black and white tiled floors and dark green walls.  You didn’t have a bath, but you didn’t mind because the shower space was plenty large enough and had two surprisingly tasteful glass walls to make up the corner.  You’d placed a plant on the high windowsill and opposite your shower was an impressive, inbuilt vanity with a large mirror across the back and a sink built into the white marble countertop.
You were just relaxing under the pressure of the hot water on your used muscles, deeply grateful for the Xavier family’s seemingly endless supply of money and their ability to run eight hot, powerful showers at once.  You ran your hands over your face and back, scraping the water away from your eyes and slicking your hair back like a supermodel when there was a soft knock on your door.  You rolled your eyes, but couldn’t help the smile that broke out across your face and shook your head with a little laugh.
“Go away, Alex!”
There wasn’t an immediate answer and you assumed it was one of his silly games to wind you up.  But the sudden feeling that gripped you made you gasp and stop in your tracks; because there was only one person who could convince you that there was a second pair of hands sliding up and down your body, taking advantage of the feeling of your wet skin.
Your mouth went dry, but you couldn’t stop the way your stomach tightened in anticipation.  Without turning the water off you leant as far forward as you could and just managed to unlock the door before turning your back and going about your business as if no one was there.  You made a deliberate point of putting far too much soap on your loofah so that you covered your whole body in the soft white bubbles.  You heard the door click, and the sound of the bolt sliding back across, so you made a point of swaying your hips to some invisible music as you made your routine a display.
“Quite the show,” he murmured, the soft English accent finally convincing you to throw your head over your shoulder, still not letting him see you from the front.  He had already discarded the grey sweater and was stood shirtless with the matching grey sweatpants slung low on his hips.  His eyes were completely trained on your body with his head tilted to the side and lips pursed as he appreciated you.  You sent him a soft smile, eyes half-closed in anticipation of the bliss soon to come.
You decided to play the long game, refusing to acknowledge him further and instead turning back under the stream of water.  That wasn’t to say that you weren’t totally tuned in to his every movement.  You could have sworn you could feel everything he did behind you.  So you weren’t entirely surprised when you felt a hand land on your hip.  This time it was real, warm and tingly and rubbing circles into your soft wet skin, pulling at you gently.  You gave in to the pressure, because if you were being honest there was no way you could resist it, finally spinning around.
You came chest to chest with Charles, your hands landing on his shoulders.  He didn’t hesitate for a second, pressing kisses along your neck, working his way up and across your jaw as you sighed and tilted your head back to provide him easier access.  He trailed up the side of your face until his mouth was right by your ear.  His hand was still massaging your waist.
“Is this all for me?”  He murmured, so close his lips just ghosted across the shell of your ear, his hot breath on your damp skin making you shiver.  Any facade of self-control immediately shattered, and yet again you were putty in his hands.  You managed a silent nod, swallowing hard, your heart hammering in your chest.  Charles pushed you slightly, edging you to take a step back and to the side so that he could submerge himself under the stream of water beside you.  The soap suds were rapidly sliding off you as you too ducked back under the shower.  Charles watched them work their way down your body.
Something felt different, you noticed.  There was a palpable tension that you both seemed to be skirting around.  Maybe it was because it was the first time you had both been voluntarily naked in front of each other without immediately moving on to sex, maybe it was because this was the first time you’d found each other without at least one of you in urgent need.  Charles’ tongue darted out to moisten his pink lips.  He was still holding your waist with one hand, his free hand reaching up to push his hair back away from his eyes.  It looked jet black under the water, and you couldn’t stop yourself from reaching up to touch it.  You watched his Adam's Apple bob, and his pupils dilate in front of you.  Your hand stayed in his hair.
Something snapped, you felt it, and before you could think any further you grabbed him, pulling him down into a heavy kiss.  Charles immediately sprang to life, pulling you into him as close as he could, his other hand wrapping around your neck to hold you in place.  He groaned lowly into your mouth, to which you responded by opening your own mouth and allowing him to slip his tongue inside.  You sighed in response, your hands roaming freely, enjoying the way the water made his skin slick to the touch.
“God, you have no idea how long I’ve been thinking about this,” his mouth fell away from yours, the words punctuated by sloppy kisses along your skin.  He chased a water droplet along the grove of your neck with his tongue, an action that made your knees buckle as you let out a high pitched whine.  Charles tightened his grip on you with ease, refusing to let you fall.  Through the foggy cloud taking over your mind, you managed to pull out a retort.
“About midway through the workout, by my estimations,”  you felt his lips curve into a smile from where they hovered just at the top of your breast, his hands now occupied with the newly lubricated flesh.  He rose at his own pace, painfully slowly, and pulled you close once more.  A well-placed thigh between your legs provided you with some pressure and you didn’t hesitate in rolling your hips down onto it, a wanton sigh escaping you at how quickly he could turn you on.  Charles looked at you, properly.  Deep into your eyes as if he were searching your face for something.  His eyes were dark, drinking in your appearance.
“And then some,” his voice was low, an almost dangerous edge creeping into it.  He removed his leg from in between yours, ignoring the small noise of protest you made and walked you backwards with his hands on your hips until your back was pressed into the corner of the shower.  The water was hot enough that even though you were no longer directly under the jet you were perfectly warm.  Charles didn’t reward you with his thigh again, instead capturing your lips once more, but before you could cling to him he was away.  He sank down, leaving sloppy kisses full of teeth and tongue against your wet skin until he was on his knees in front of you, his mouth dangerously close to where you were aching for him most.
He guided you softly, encouraging you to lift your left leg and hook it over his shoulder, forcing you to lean back and give him unlimited access to you.  The arm that wasn’t wrapped around your thigh was pressed against the softness of your lower stomach, keeping you in place with gentle pressure.  You weren’t sure what to do initially with your hands as you let yourself relax into the new position.  Eventually one of them tangled in his sodden hair, keeping a firm grip.  The other found a place on the wall, supporting yourself as best you could.  Charles interrupted you from where you were settling into things by dropping his head and blowing quickly on your sex.
The shot of cold air against your exposed skin made you gasp, your head snapping forward to train your attention back on the man in front of you.  Apparently, that was what he wanted because he was waiting for you.
“I want you to watch,” he almost purred “See how good you taste to me,” his mouth was inching closer to you with every word, the anticipation coiling tightly in the pit of your stomach.  You nodded, your skin burning with the request but you weren’t uncomfortable.  Charles never did anything to make you uncomfortable.
“Shit,”
He started by licking an experimental stripe along the outside of your vulva, tantalisingly close but still not quite there.  You could tell from the warmth between your legs that you were already soaked, and he confirmed your suspicions by easing his tongue between your folds and swiping up towards your clit in one easy movement.  You gasped, your eyes instinctively closed and your head fell backwards as electricity crackled up your spine.  Just as quickly as you gave in to the feeling, you felt Charles pull back.
“I said watch,” all playfulness was gone from his tone.  He refused to so much as touch you until he had your full attention once more.  “Good girl,” that was enough to make you melt, and you watched him transfixed as he moved back towards you.
Trying to focus on Charles whilst he ate you out like you were his final meal was a challenge.  He left nothing to the imagination, making a show of tasting you, swallowing any of your excesses and moaning as he did so.  He was perfectly focused, zeroed in on your clit with accuracy that had you unable to manage more than a string of curse words and his name on repeat.  His eyes were closed, leaving you to admire the thick lashes, flushed cheeks and dark hair that was now a complete mess and plastered to the top of his head.  He alternated between working you with his tongue and sucking you into his mouth in what was almost a kiss.  The sensation of his teeth grazing your clit irregularly had you tensing in the best way.  It took an alarmingly short time for you to grip him tighter, trying to utter out a warning as your breathing became more shallow and your voice trailed off.  Charles responded with a moan that vibrated through you, picking up the intensity even more so to the point where you were a trembling mess.
His eyes opened, trained on your features and you felt paralysed, the intensity of the orgasm building within you too close to risk looking away.  Watching him watch you was enough to do it.  You didn’t even get time to warn him as you jolted, the orgasm crashing over you before you even knew it was hitting you.  Both of his hands were gripping your hips, guiding you in grinding on his face as his tongue worked relentlessly.
“Oh my god, Charles!”
You felt him chuckle against you at your volume, which only added to the sensations flowing through you, making your legs shake.  Your hands were fisted hard in his hair, desperately trying to find something, anything, to ground you.  You couldn’t maintain eye contact as much as you wanted to, your eyes rolling back into your head and your whole body trembling with the force.  Charles stilled, using his hands to guide your movements to a slowing stop.  He kissed you gently, tidying up after himself and even cupping a hand to collect some water and wipe away the mess that had spilled over onto your thighs.
The second he rose back up to standing you threw yourself at him, arms circling around his neck and pulling him as close to you as you could.  Charles reciprocated the energy, pulling you towards him and kissing you with a desperate aggression, the taste of yourself faint in his mouth.  You could feel him then, hard and ready against your leg, unable to stop himself from moving against you.  He grabbed the back of your thighs, indicating for you to jump for him and you did.
Charles tried to catch you from the jump and press you against the wall once more, this time level with him.  However, the addition of water on tiled floors caused him to lose the strength in his footing and the pair of you wobbled for a second.  He managed to pin you against the wall in a rapid correction, but your confidence was a little knocked.  Charles continued to attack you with kisses on any part of your skin he could reach but especially your neck.  You couldn’t help but imagine the pair of you tumbling to the floor in a tangle of sprained limbs and broken bones.
“Hey,” it was Charles speaking in your head, “I won’t let anything happen to you,” you nodded against his lips, and he reciprocated but stepped back to let you down, reaching behind you as he did to turn off the shower.  You looked at him quizzically, not quite ready for the moment to end entirely, but he didn’t offer you any explanation.  Instead, he stepped out of the shower and held out his hand for you to take and he led you across the small space to the vanity.  Pleased to be out of the slip zone you understood what he wanted and allowed him to help you perch on the countertop just beside your sink.  The marble was cold on your skin, making you shiver pleasantly in comparison to the hot humid air surrounding you.
Charles stepped between your open legs, and for a second you were reminded of his office two days before, before he caught you in such a heated kiss that everything else left your mind instantly.  You felt one of his hands move downwards, and judging by the slight movements you could feel of his arm against your leg, he was stroking himself as you made out like a pair of out of control teenagers.  His other hand snuck along your inner thigh, his thumb making contact with your sensitive clit causing you to jolt.  His fingers danced between your folds, toying with you and winding you up as his tongue entered your mouth, easily dominating you.  Two fingers pushed into you, and you felt yourself gasp, the feel of something finally inside of you enough to make your walls clench.  Charles was making no effort to make you cum again, however.  He was deliberately playing with you, refusing to stick to a regular rhythm as he worked you alongside himself.  It didn’t take you long before you couldn’t stand the feeling,
“Charles,” you whined, capturing his attention.  He looked up at you, a mischievous grin on his features.  He didn’t remove his fingers from inside you, and he didn’t let go of himself either.
“Ask for it,”
“I need you,” he raised an eyebrow, only half satisfied with your response. “Please,” you added with a breathy sigh.
You thought he was going to lean forward to kiss you, but instead, he swerved past you.  You turned to watch with interest as he reached behind you and wiped a large patch clean in the fogged up mirror that made up the back of the vanity unit.  “Trust me,” he spoke in your mind at your clear moment of confusion, before helping you down from your seat.
Charles pressed a chaste kiss to your lips before smoothly spinning you around.  You caught sight of yourself in the mirror, and suddenly it clicked into place.  Charles walked you forwards until you were able to lean forward on the counter, his breath hot on your neck as he took his position behind you.  He pushed into you with ease and you couldn’t stop the moan that escaped you at the pleasantness of the stretch.  The sensation almost took your breath away, and before Charles even began to move your breaths were coming in shallow and the familiar sensation of an orgasm building within you began to swell.
“Christ, Y/N,” he forced out through gritted teeth as he withdrew his hips and pushed back into you a couple of times before settling into a rhythm.  With your legs pressed together and your back bent over the counter he felt significantly larger than usual inside of you, and you could only manage small whimpers in response to the overwhelming sensations.  The air was virtually stifling, aside from the small seconds of relief as icy cool drops of condensation landed on your skin.  One of Charles’ hands had made their way to your front and he was gently rolling a nipple between his fingers, making the hairs along the back of your neck stand on end.  His other hand landed sharply on your backside, drawing out a soft “oh,” from  you and the warm tingling patch left had you almost blushing.  Charles was speeding up too, moving at an almost relentless pace.
“Look at me,” the demand made you look up into the mirror once more and the sight before you was almost enough to have you collapsed screaming over the vanity in itself.  You were a mess, eyes blown wide with a blush across your cheeks that extended down your neck and across your shoulders, mouth open in pure pleasure.  If you were a mess, Charles was something else entirely.  Stood directly behind you, his hands firm on your hips as he drove into you, forcing you to stay still as he took control of everything from behind.  His eyes were trained on your face in the mirror, his breath coming in short from the exertion of forcing himself to last for you.
“So beautiful,” he grunted, his voice ragged and almost broken in the effort to get the words out  “Such a good girl for me,” the hand on your nipple moved upwards further, wrapping very gently around your throat.  He didn’t even have to squeeze because you could already feel yourself coming undone with an unrestricted cry, but when he did apply a little pressure you all but screamed, your walls clenching tightly around him as your second orgasm rocked through your body, leaving you spent and sprawled out on the vanity without the strength to support yourself.  Your eyes found Charles’ in the mirror and you watched in awe as his thrusts became sloppier.  He was making direct eye contact in the mirror, making an almost obscene amount of noise as he reached his own high.
He had to place a hand on your back to balance as he pulled out, before swiftly catching you and holding you close.
“Are you okay?”  Charles was back, with a kiss pressed against your temple as he examined you carefully.  You nodded weakly.
“Yeah, that was just….” you didn’t have the words.
“Intense,” he provided, and you agreed.  Charles helped you back into the shower to clean up, and sat with you on the floor like it was nothing as he massaged your shampoo into your head.  The soft kisses he placed along your exposed shoulder were not missed.  Once you were clean and had managed to recover yourself he helped you to your feet and handed you one of the fluffy towels that was hanging off the back of the door.  You watched as he dried himself off and pulled on the grey sweatpants from earlier.
“I would love to stay, but I have a government meeting with Erik sometime soon,” he admitted, an almost sheepish grin on his face.  You nodded, understanding.  The trouble with Charles was that you never had his complete attention, his mind was always somewhere esle, at least a little bit.
“That’s okay.  I think I need a nap before lunch,”  he chuckled and pulled you into him by your hip again, pressing another kiss to your temple.
“Good idea,”
You were about to reach for the door when Charles caught your arm and pulled you to him once more, his hand on the back of your neck as he captured you in an urgent kiss.  If you hadn’t been so exhausted he could have had you ready and desperate for round two in a matter of minutes.

Rgrgh Ok, the last one! This was super fun to do with you! I can't wait to see how the platonic yans seeing all their kids again is gonna play out.
So knowing how Raven is, I imagine she'd be similar to Hank in the sense of her change, she becomes grim, hollow in a sense. She doesn't act the same around the other kids, and she's quieter. Her guilt guides her to a dark part of herself, she might be be good at hiding it sometimes, but it can't be helped, two of her kids are gone, and she made sure that those parasites died in terror, knowing that what they'd done to them, their actions decided the next course of events.
I feel she might be the one to have the most doubts about whether this was what their kids would've wanted, divided on if they'd approve or not, if they were here, they might've liked the peace and calm, but what they had done to achieve it... but they aren't here, thats the point isn't it? All of this, they'd done for them, and her other children aren't fairing very well either, they have a hard time grasping with the fact that they'd not only lost their friends, but their siblings too, nothing could be done or said to fix it.
Lamb Anon
I'm enjoying this too, 🐑 Anon!!!😊 Of course, once you've read this, I want to know... Who are your top three, out of the seven platonic yan adults, you would like the most as Reader's parent? (I said three because I figure it would be hard to choose just one person, and I myself have my favorites, but I want to hear your thoughts as well😊)
Raven had seen better days.
The feelings inside her... they hurt. They feel poisonous, venomous, dangerous.
The ones who caused them find out how it feels in full.
They'd taken them.
It wasn't fair.
Punishment was given, sharp and stinging and drowning in red. It was only fair. They'd- she- had lost someone. Multiple someones. And there was a price to pay. The problem was... who was paying that price, ultimately? The writhing, bleeding parasites, who caused this whole disaster? Their masters, their bosses, who were soon brought to heel and forced to resign, then joined them in death? The people, fearful and anxious, soon made to accept this new peace? The mutants, who now had the peace, but at a price? Or... perhaps it was them, who lost their children... Or still...
Their children who paid that price... Each and every bleeding drop of it. They would never know the peace they'd made because of them, the peace they made for them, and others like them... They wouldn't be with them, to joke or fight or laugh or cry.... They were simply...
Gone.
And it is a hollow feeling, with a hollow reward.
She'd lost a child that day, only to find out it wasn't one. It was two.
Her two flesh and blood children, both gone, one bleeding profusely and faded before anything could be done, the other quick to follow and crying, for all of them...
Reader had been her's. And she never knew. They never knew. And that would never be known outside of their group, because the only others they'd share it with were gone, cold and buried and resting. She does her best, to be there for her remaining child. For the other children. But most days all she feels is a bitter, burning bile inside her. A venom to be used against their enemies. A weapon that keeps others in line. She accepts what comfort is given... but it doesn't do much besides justify their actions.
They'd lost their own. And that was unforgivable.
Her daughter, Rogue, doesn't fare much better. She can sense the bitterness, the guilt, inside her. She's her mother; she knows this the same way she senses it in all the others.
Self-hatred. Loathing. Guilt. Anger. And always that burning, righteous rage, that helped bring about the world they now know.
What they've done... she doubts they would understand. But it doesn't matter if they would understand it or not. The way things were before allowed their fates to be sealed, to be carried out. Now, it would never happen again.
So, no. Maybe it isn't right. Maybe it's wrong. But it is a necessary evil, one that has only kept safe those who've suffered, those who would have met their fate eventually. So even if it's wrong, it is better this way...
(She'll miss them: she always will. But for now, she has to uphold the new world, the new order, they've made. And even if it's hard, even if it makes them wrong... Then that is a price they'll pay, if only to stop the past from happening all over again...)

Right now the thought of a Harry Potter and X men crossover has taken over my brain.
Imagine Harry standing in the bedroom with Ron and Hermione at Number 12 Grimmauld Place. Hermione's just told him that Dumbledore made them swear not to reveal anything meaningful to him over the summer holidays.
Harry's annoyance quickly turns into anger at the fact that the people he cares so much about were persuaded so easily by his Headmaster. His anger builds and the world goes grey. Everything freezes as if time itself has come to a screeching halt.
Harry's breaths turn shaky as he tries to understand what's going on. Right before his eyes, four misty paths appear. The first path shows him forgiving Ron and Hermione and staying in Grimmauld Place with Sirius. The second path has him visiting Gringotts and allying himself with the goblins. The third has him bumping into Hannah Abbott in Diagon Alley and turning his back on Wizarding Britain.
The fourth path intrigues him the most. Harry notices a mansion that reminds him of Hogwarts but he sees people using their powers openly and working as a team. Fuelled with the desire for change, Harry chooses that path.
The mist swirls around him and when he reopens his eyes, he's sitting in the mansion on a chair being observed by multiple pairs of worried eyes.
Harry's story spills out of him without much prompting and a man with metallic blue eyes finds himself drawing parallels between his life and the teen's. Harry watches him soften the tiniest amount when another person enters the room.
He learns that the man's name is Erik and the second you draw level with Erik, he wraps an arm around your waist and yanks you to his side, needing the comfort that your presence brings. You're quickly filled in, and Harry has the unshakeable feeling that you know more about Wizarding Britain than anyone else in the room.
Time passes. Raven is delighted to have a little brother who accepts her immediately because he knows how it feels to be isolated over something you can't control. Harry doesn't know how you manage it but somehow MACUSA finds out about the state of Wizarding Britain. Once MACUSA is involved, other wizarding places involve themselves and Wizarding Britain undergoes a massive overhaul and Voldemort is defeated before the first Wizarding War.
Harry learns to harness his gift and in doing so, saves many of his friends from those who want to harm them. Working alongside the other mutants, Harry feels protected for the first time in a long time. He's not treated like a child one minute and a saviour the next. Harry's never treated as a pariah.
He feels at home in Charles' mansion and occasionally, when he peeks out of a window that overlooks the grounds, he sees flashes of Wizarding Britain but then, he blinks or focuses on something closer to him and the images fade away.

What did you think of X-Men Blue Origins?
(I may turn this into a People's History of the Marvel Universe later today, so keep an eye on this space.)
X-Men Blue: Origins and the Power of the Additive Retcon
Tumblr media
(WARNING: heavy spoilers under the cut)
Introduction
If you've been a long-time X-Men reader, or you're a listener of Jay & Miles or Cerebrocast or any number of other LGBT+ X-Men podcasts, you probably know the story about how Chris Claremont wrote Mystique and Destiny as a lesbian couple, but had to use obscure verbiage and subtextual coding to get past Jim Shooter's blanket ban on LGBT+ characters in the Marvel Universe.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Likewise, you're probably also familiar with the story that, when Chris Claremont came up with the idea that Raven Darkholme and Kurt Wagner were related (a plot point set up all the way back in Uncanny X-Men #142), he intended that Mystique was Nightcrawler's father, having used her shapeshifting powers to take on a male body and impregnate (her one true love) Irene. This would have moved far beyond subtext - but it proved to be a bridge too far for Marvel editorial, and Claremont was never able to get it past S&P.
Tumblr media
This lacuna in the backstories of Kurt and Raven - who was Kurt's father? - would remain one of the enduring mysteries of the X-Men mythos...and if there's one thing that comic writers like, it's filling in these gaps with a retcon.
Enter the Draco
Before I get into the most infamous story in all of X-Men history, I want to talk about retcons a bit. As I've written before:
"As long as there have been comic books, there have been retcons. For all that they have acquired a bad reputation, retcons can be an incredibly useful tool in comics writing and shouldn’t be dismissed out of hand. Done right, retcons can add an enormous amount of depth and breadth to a character, making their worlds far richer than they were before. Instead, I would argue that retcons should be judged on the basis of whether they’re additive (bringing something new to the character by showing us a previously unknown aspect of their lives we never knew existed before) or subtractive (taking away something from the character that had previously been an important part of their identity), and how well those changes suit the character."
For a good example of an additive retcon, I would point to Chris Claremont re-writing Magneto's entire personality by revealing that he was a Jewish survivor of the Holocaust. As I have argued at some length, this transformed Magneto from a Doctor Doom knockoff into a complex and sympathetic character who could now work as a villain, anti-villain, anti-hero, or hero depending on the needs of the story.
For a good example of a subtractive retcon, I would point to...the Draco. If you're not familiar with this story, the TLDR is that it was revealed that Kurt's father was Azazel - an evil ancient mutant with the same powers and the same appearance (albeit color-shifted) as Kurt, who claims to be the devil and is part of a tribe of demonic-looking mutants who were banished to the Brimstone Dimension, and who fathered Nightcrawler as part of a plot to end this banishment.
Tumblr media
I don't want to belabor Chuck Austen, because I think that Connor Goldsmith is right about his run actually being a camp cult classic in retrospect. However, I think we both agree that the Draco was a misfire, because of how the retcon undermined Kurt's entire thematic purpose as established in Giant-Size X-Men that Nightcrawler was actually a noble and arguably saintly man who suffered from unjust prejudice due to the random accident that his mutation made him appear to be a demon, and because of how the retcon undermined the centrality of Mystique and Destiny's relationship.
X-Men Blue Origins
This brings us to the Krakoan era. In HOXPOX and X-Men and Inferno, Jonathan Hickman had made Mystique and Destiny a crucial part of the story in a way that they hadn't been in decades: they were the great nemeses of Moira X, they were the force that threatened to burn Krakoa to the ground by revealing the devil's bargain that Xavier had struck with Sinister (and Moira), they were the lens through which the potential futures of Krakoa were explored, and they ultimately reshaped the Quiet Council and the Five in incredibly consequential ways.
Tumblr media
This throughline was furthered after Hickman's departure, with Kieron Gillen exploring the backstories of Mystique and Destiny in Immortal X-Men and Sins of Sinister, and both Gillen and Si Spurrier exploring their relationship with Nightcrawler in AXE Judgement Day, Sins of Sinister, Way of X, Legion of X, Nightcrawlers, and Sons of X. One of the threads that wove through the interconnected fabric of these books was an increasing closeness between Kurt and Irene that needed an explanation. Many long-time readers began to anticipate that a retcon about Kurt's parentage was coming - and then we got X-Men Blue: Origins.
In this one issue, Si Spurrier had the difficult assignment of figuring out a way to "fix" the Draco and restore Claremont's intended backstory in a way that was surgical and elegant, that served the character arcs of Kurt, Raven, and Irene, and that dealt with complicated issues of trans and nonbinary representation, lesbian representation, disability representation, and the protean nature of the mutant metaphor. Thanks to help from Charlie Jane Anders and Steve Foxe, I think Spurrier succeeded tremendously.
I don't want to go through the issue beat-by-beat, because you should all read it, but the major retcon is that Mystique turns out to be a near-Omega level shapeshifter, who can rewrite themselves on a molecular level. Raven transformed into a male body and impregnated Irene, using bits of Azazel and many other men's DNA as her "pigments." In addition to being a deeply felt desire on both their parts to have a family together, this was part of Irene's plan to save them both (and the entire world) from Azazel's schemes, a plan that required them to abandon Kurt as a scapegoat-savior (a la Robert Graves' King Jesus), and to have Xavier wipe both their memories.
Tumblr media
Now, I'm not the right person to write about what this story means on a representational level; I'll leave it to my LGBT+ colleagues on the Cerebrocast discord and elsewhere to discuss the personal resonances the story had for them.
What I will say, however, is that I thought this issue threaded the needle of all of these competing imperatives very deftly. It "fixed" the Draco without completely negating it, it really deepened and complicated the characters and relationships of both Raven and Irene (by showing that, in a lot of ways, Destiny is the more ruthless and manipulative of the two), and it honored Kurt's core identity as a man of hope and compassion (even if it did put him in a rather thankless ingénue role for much of the book).
It is the very acme of an additive retcon; nothing was lost, everything was gained.
I still think the baby Nightcrawler is just a bad bit, but then again I don't really vibe with Spurrier's comedic stylings.

They pulled up to Agent Koenigs's facility with a new addition to their little mutant group. Charles introduced him to raven, his name was Erik Lehnsherr. His mutation was that he could control metal. It was an amazing mutation. Bella was astonished. Mutants really are amazing.
"Welcome to my facility. My mission has been to investigate the application of paranormal powers in military defense." Koenig said.
"Or offense." Erik cut in. Isabella didn't need to be like Charles to know Erik was only here to kill Shaw, he really wanted to get this over with.
"This guy Shaw, Schmidt, whatever you want to call him, he's working with the Russians. We might need your help to stop him."
Bella tuned them out grabbing her sister's hand securely. They may have been adults but bella had terrible anxiety. Ever since she was a child, she could barely go out in public. She missed that motherly figure in her life to tell her it would be okay. Raven and Charles were there for her of course, but she dreamed of having a mother, or even just a parent. So whenever she was near lots of people or just in public, she would stick close to her sister. Raven sometimes acted as a mother, even though they were the same age, she was just very maternal and loving.
"So we're to be the CIA's new mutant division, yes?" Charles asked keeping his sisters in his eye line making sure Belle was okay. He knew how bad it could get, sometimes he would calm her with his mutation, but thankfully he didn't need to do that today.
"Something like that," Koenig said. It made bella feel uneasy. What else would they be doing? Are they keeping them, prisoners? The thoughts getting to her head made her breathing shaky. Raven could tell her sister was feeling anxious and put her arm around her and kissed the side of her head whilst muttering "It's okay. I'm here, you don't need to feel like this." Surprisingly it made her feel better, just knowing her sister was there gave her a feeling of warmth.
The mutants followed the agents further into the building until they were beneath a huge jet, attached to the ceiling by thin wires. that didn't look safe.
"It's uh supersonic." A man said who seemed to be working nearby. Everyone looked up at the jet in awe.
"Hank, these are the special new recruits I was telling you about." - He nodded towards the group. - "This is Hank McCoy, one of our most talented young researchers."
"How wonderful. Another mutant, already here." Charles said stepping closer to the man and shaking his hand. This made Isabella happy. There really were mutants in plain sight, hopefully, one day it would be normal for mutants to be around and not having to hide - as raven does.
"Why didn't you say?" Charles asked Koenig.
"Say what?" He replied with a confused tone.
"Because you don't know. I am so, so terribly sorry." Shit Charles. Isabella looked at him with a sorrowful look. He seemed like a nice guy, yet here he was being outed by Charles.
"Hank?" Koenig asked with what seemed to be an amazed expression - let's hope it was that anyway.
"You didn't ask, so I didn't tell," Hank said looking down.
"So, your mutation is what?" Raven asked stepping forwards, still holding onto her sister's hand. "you're super-smart?" she teased.
"I'll say. Hank here graduated Harvard at the age of 15." Charles spoke up.
"I wish that's all it was." Hank shyly told.
"You're in the company of friends now, Hank," Isabella said to the newly announced mutant. She wanted him to feel safe around them. She knew how it was to be shy and how it can take a toll on your social status.
"You can show off," Charles added. Hank stepped back and started to take his shoes and socks off. Bella wondered what his mutation was.
"Splendid," Charles said after seeing his feet. He had hands for feet. Truly amazing how a mutation can change something.
"I'm sorry," Hank muttered as he moved around the group taking a big leap and jumping upside down, and holding onto the jet with his feet.
"Amazing," Isabella said with a smile to the man who shyly smiled at her sister.
⋆✩⋆
Isabella couldn't help the smile that came over her face as she sat across from her sister. After they met hank they all went their separate ways. Isabella just strolled around the building invisibly so she didn't get stares or didn't have to smile and talk to people. It did make her sound like a resentful bitch, but she couldn't care less. Currently, the two were sitting in their shared bedroom that was in the facility. At first, Bella wanted a room by herself so she didn't make raven feel like her carer, but raven loved being with her sister. Nothing could break them apart.  Bella reading a book, and Raven flipping through a magazine, while music played softly in the background.
"What?" Raven asked once she saw that her sister was smiling at her.
"Nothing." Isabella shrugged before she went back to her book.
"Belle." Raven pushed as she knew she was lying. She just wanted to know what  Bella was smiling at her for.
"You and beast-boy huh?" belle teased as a smirk replaced her smile,
"Beast-boy?" Raven questioned with a whine.
"Yeah cuz' his feet are what you'd imagine a beast to have like in the story Mom told us." Raven smiled at the mention of their late mother. She had died when they were roughly eight years old. All they had to remember her by was the necklace Isabella wore. Bella went on and on for raven to keep it, but raven knew how belle needed things like that to keep her close to family when things got too much for her. Sometimes when she was young and her mother kissed her goodbye to school she swore not to wash that cheek until she saw her mother again. That's how bad it was.
"Do you miss her?"
"Yeah, but I know she would be proud of us. For sticking to what's right." Isabella said fiddling with her necklace. The only time she took it off was when she showered so it didn't get rusty. Raven had their mom's ring on her right-hand ring finger.
"If mom didn't die, do you think things would have been different?" Raven questioned quietly.
"Like what?"
"Like maybe we wouldn't have been as close, we wouldn't have met Charles. Maybe our mutations got out of control and we expose ourselves and make everything worse-" Raven rambled on.
"Let's not think about what could have happened yeah? Let's be glad we're here now, safe doing things we didn't know we could. I miss Mom, but I'm glad she's at peace now." Isabella said before smiling at her sister.
"So. back to you and beast-boy" Bella laughed as she saw her sister face plant the pillow.
⋆✩⋆
Isabella was in astonishment as she followed after Raven and Erik into what Hank presented to them as Cerebro.
"Okay, so, uh, the electrodes connect Charles to the transmitter on the roof. When he picks up a mutant, his brain sends a signal through a relay, and then the coordinates of their location are printed out here." Hank explained his invention. Isabella stood with her brother as they looked over the piece that he would have to place on his head, while Raven and Erik stood with Hank beside the controls. She couldn't help but feel a little anxiety about what they were to be doing but she pushed it aside as she watched Charles place the helmet on.
"What an adorable lab rat you make, Charles." Erik teased as the woman switched places with Erik and stood next to her sister. Bella felt glad Erik was warming up to them and agreed to stay with them. When they first found Erik he was incredibly closed off. It had only been a day but he was opening up more and more. Bella and Erik both had the same goal at the end of the day. Kill and find Shaw. Something they bonded over. It may have been out of character for Bella to be so violent, but if Shaw was actively hurting and threatening people, including her family, she wanted him gone.
"Don't spoil this for me, Erik." Charles shot back as he got relaxed in the chair.
"Oh. I've been a lab rat.
I know one when I see one." Erik admitted.
"Are you sure we can't shave your head?" Hank asked Charles as he made sure the helmet was on accurately.
"Don't touch my hair," Charles said instantly, displeased with hanks offer. Hank just nodded before he went back to the control panel. Turning on the machine and flipping all the needed switches. Isabella waited in suspense as the room seemed to get darker and the lights of the machine seemed to be the only things illuminating the room. Charles grunted in pain as he grasped the railing that seemed to surround him. Bella grabbed her sister's hand as they waited in anticipation.
"It's working." Hank declared to the other mutants as they observed Charles. Bella couldn't help but smile as she watched her brother chuckle in amazement at what he was seeing.
⋆✩⋆
Isabella sat on Charles's bed as she watched him pack a small bag. He and Erik would be traveling to recruit some of the mutants that Charles had found while in Cerebro. Her plan would be to beg Charles to let her go with them. She was bored of staying in the facility, which was not like her. Normally she would stay in her room listening to music, reading, and wouldn't come out. But something was drawing her away. Like a magnet in her stomach pulling her somewhere and she needed to follow it.
"Are you sure I can't join the two of you?" She asked.
"The new recruits will need friendly faces to greet them - preferably other mutants - when they arrive," Charles explained to his younger sister. He wouldn't have minded if  Bella just joined the two of them. Making sure she was ok and safe. Of course, she would be fine at the facility, especially with Raven, but he worried for her and knew how she got.
"And you, my dear sister, have one of the friendliest faces I have ever seen," Charles added as she stopped next to the woman and put his arm around her shoulder. She missed moments like this, they hadn't had one in a while.
"He isn't wrong. bella" A new voice joined them from the doorway. Isabella turned her head and saw that it was Raven, walking through the door.
"This won't work you know.." Bella rolled her eyes as she pulled Charles' arm away from her.
"What won't work?" Raven smiled as she walked closer to her siblings.
"She is right. Isabella is way too stubborn to let this go." Her brother laughed.
"I was just hoping to get out of this stupid government building," Bella said, shocking her siblings.
"Really? Normally you would stay and curl up in your room. Your not the type to go out specifically to see people."  Her sister really did know her all too well.
"I don't know. I think I wanna just get out. All the government agents creep me out and I think I need to learn to be around people more, this might help." It wasn't a complete lie, but if she said the real reason Charles would immediately shut her down and probably laugh and tell her she needed rest. She saw her brother have a look of contemplation on his face before he opened his mouth and agreed for her to tag along. She squealed with excitement. Maybe Charles wasn't so protective anymore, maybe he was finally letting her have her own life.
"Okay well have fun for me. Good luck meeting new people bella." Raven said hugging her sister. It might've seemed childish, but Isabella really did have a hard time near people. She'd gotten better recently though, and raven was proud of her sister.
⋆✩⋆
Isabella was delighted that Charles had agreed for her to come search for the mutants
As Bella sat in the car waiting for Charles, she found herself wondering what the real reason was for her desire to go with Charles and Erik. The pretend magnet in her stomach got more and more intense the more they searched for other mutants. With no answer from the universe she was hoping for, Isabella decided to get out of the car and find Charles, erik, and the mutant they were there for. When they pulled up to the strip club, Charles forced Isabella to stay in the car. His protective side revealing which was really starting to irritate Bella.
The invisible mutant phased through the doors of the club. She then phased through a few private areas, before finally coming upon the one Charles and erik were in. She saw the beautiful girl before her eyes and smiled once she saw the captivating wing that protruded through her back.
"Badass." Bella said, making herself visible. Clearly captivated by the girl and her wings. Charles sighed at his little sister whilst Erik and the girl-Angel- smirked at Isabella.
"How would you like a job where you get to keep your clothes on?" He said to the mutant as she wafted in the air, her wings fluttering around her.
Once they sent Angel to the CIA facility, the next mutant they were to recruit, was a taxi driver named Darwin.
"Where to?" Darwin asked the three, sending a charming smile to Isabella.
"Richmond, Virginia, please." She told the man before Charles could interrupt her.
"Right, so, you want the airport? The station? What?" Darwin chuckled.
"No, we were rather hoping you would take us all the way." She smiled.
"That's a six-hour drive."
"That will give us plenty of time to talk," Erik smirked before shutting the fare meter, making Darwin look back in surprise.
Now they were in a prison to see another mutant - of course. Isabella wasn't sure about this one, since he was in prison. As they made their way through the prison, following the warden, Isabella felt the fictional magnet in her stomach start fluttering around, tugging her harder and closer than it had before.
weird.
what is weird belle? She heard Charles in her head.
"Stop invading my mind, Charles." She grumbled, before stopping in front of the cell holding the mutant - Alex Summers.
"What does the government want with a guy like Alex Summers? I hope you're not planning on putting him with others. First guy, I've ever met who actually prefers solitary confinement." The warden said to them in a judgy tone. People like him were some of the reasons Isabella was anxious to go out, I mean come on no need to be so judgy.
He opened the door and there they saw Alex who so say caused havoc, Bella was guessing with his mutation. The warden cautioned them earlier, about putting him with others in a group, as Alex was the only prisoner he'd known to actually prefer solitary confinement like the warden said before. He looked up with a scowl on his face. Apparently, he wasn't actually bad, just worried about unleashing his mutation and hurting others around him.
We can fix him up. Bella thought feeling the need to help him understand his power, and make him feel more secure using it if he wants to of course.
Once they left the prison, Isabella decided to go back to the CIA facility with Alex. Obviously to see Raven no other reason. She also wanted to assure Alex he won't cause any destruction or hurt others. Charles was reluctant to leave Bella to go back on her own and thought it was odd that she would happily leave the safety of her brother, knowing she preferred to stay with her siblings. Maybe she was coming out of her shell though, which would be amazing for her.
Currently, Bella was sitting next to the newly recruited mutant. She could tell how tense and nervous he was to be out of solitary confinement. They hadn't said much to him about what they were planning, so Isabella felt the need to explain everything, not even just what he was here to do. She wanted to explain mutations to him too. Now she may not have been as smart as Charles, but she knew more than the average person on mutations. After forcing Charles to read about it all to her, she felt pretty confident she could explain it to him and help him understand.
"You don't have to be so nervous you know. I don't bite" She told him softly with a smile.
He didn't say anything, continuing to stare at the airport around him. Isabella sighed not knowing what to say to him. She knew all too well about being quiet. All bella wanted to do was help him.
"I'm not going to ridicule you for whatever you did, or your mutation." She sighed, needing to let him understand she was here to help. Alex looked toward Isabella scoffing before saying.
"I can take the insults, I just don't want to hurt anyone. I don't think you understand how destructive I am."
"You know if you were to get out of control, ill be here to help. I can create forcefields that are sealed tight and impenetrable, nothing would get in or out of my forcefields. I can do other stuff too, but ill only show you if you tell me about you." She smiled.
For the whole plane journey, they both shared storied about their life. Alex even opening up to Isabella about his abilities. He shared the story of how he ended up in prison. She felt for him, no one deserved to feel that way about themselves or their powers. She even ended up making him laugh, which made Belle feel warm inside at the sight.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was a quiet morning as you and Wanda prepared your lunch, a synchrony that only years of harmonious marriage can explain. You were humming to the song that was playing on the radio, trying not to cut your fingers off as your eyes were glued to your wife's swaying hip as she stirred something in one of the pans on the stove.
"Will those carrots be ready for me in time, darling?" Her voice sounds, laden with teasing, her back still turned to you.
"What, you can read my mind now?" You ask back in a playful tone, blinking a few times as you stop staring at her ass so bluntly, and the brunette lets out a hearty giggle.
"For the record, I always could." She turns to you to say, an eyebrow raised. "But I don't need that when I can't hear any noise of your knife moving."
You let out a soft chuckle at her watchfulness, shaking your head lightly in amusement. "Not my fault you're so distracting." You defend yourself good-naturedly, but before you can go back to chopping the vegetables, your wife's hands hold your face, pulling it towards her. Her smirk meets your own gently, and you let go of the knife to hold her by the waist, pulling her closer to you. When you were about to deepen the kiss, a weird noise caught your attention.
The two of you exchange curious glances at the squeaking noise, such as an energy field or loose electrical wires. When you approach the window, however, you notice it's neither. On a dark purple metal platform are two women whom you know well. But you have never seen either Jean or Raven using such a strange device. The two women step off the platform, looking around cautiously. And when the metal piece disappears with the same strange noise, you frown. "Stay here."
You don't wait for Wanda's response to start walking, and the brunette watches you move to the door that leads to the back garden with her arms crossed in front of her chest, her eyebrows furrowed, full of concern. When you pull the wood piece open and step outside, the brunette takes her attention back to the window, to the backyard where the two women, attracted by the sound, turn their faces to you.
"Jean?" Your question is uncertain as you stare at the redhead, hesitant. But the girl's expression breaks into a smile as her eyes fill with tears.
"Y/n!" She lets your name out in a sob as she runs to you, wrapping her arms around your neck tightly. You frown in complete confusion, but you hug your friend back anyways, your arms around her middle. You look at Raven for some kind of explanation, but the blonde girl just casts you a sad smile, opting to stay a bit far.
"Thank god. You're alive." Jean says cheerfully as she pulls away, her hands on each side of your face, and you're suddenly feeling very awkward at the whole situation, not really knowing what to say or do. Your wife, who watches the scene attentively from the kitchen window, is not liking it at all either, and clenches her jaw as she follows the steps you took a few minutes ago.
You laugh with confusion. "What? Of course I'm alive, what the hell are you talking about? Are you okay?"
"Jean? What a lovely surprise." Wanda's voice sounds from the door before Jean can answer your questions, her eyes cautious. The redhead pulls away from you immediately at the sight of the other woman, looking a bit disappointed, which only makes you more confused.
"I'm afraid that's not the case, Wanda." Your friend tells your wife with a sad smile, and you frown with concern.
"What's going on, Jean? Are you alright?"
"I'm not your Jean." She tells you softly, and as your eyebrows furrow in confusion.
Your wife raises hers in disbelief, her head tilting slightly, "Their Jean?"
"I-I mean, the Jean you know." The redhead rushes to explain, her cheeks red from embarrassment. "I'm from another universe." The information sends Wanda's jealousy away with the shock, and you widen your eyes at the revelation.
"We better talk about this somewhere more private." Raven speaks for the first time before you can fill the other one with questions, her eyes scanning the surroundings.
You do the same in reflex, before looking at the two of them, and inviting with a motion of your head, "Come."
You and Wanda exchange apprehensive glances as you lead the multiversal travelers into your house, your hand on her lower back protectively. Neither of you notice how Jean and Raven exchange glances - the redhead with a sad one to which the blonde offers an empathetic smile. When you're in the kitchen, you rest your palms on the marble countertop, eyeing the strangers - if you can even call them that. But not long after, you are firing your first question. "Why are you here?"
Jean and Raven exchange glances, as if deciding what to say next. Even though your anxiety is growing to alarming levels, you do your best to remain calm, trying to control the rhythm of your breathing just like Wanda had taught you throughout the years. And, not long after, the two women's eyes find yours again. "It's an emergency." It's Jean who breaks the silence first, and Raven nods her head in agreement, casting you an almost apologetic smile. "We wouldn't have come if it wasn't."
Now it's the turn of you and Wanda to exchange glances, both your eyes loaded with apprehension before you look at the travelers again. "Okay... What is it then?" You ask, uncertain, but the girls' eyes drift to your wife.
"I... I think it's best if we talk in private." Raven's suggestion makes you tense your jaw tightly. Who are they to show up out of nowhere in your backyard - quite literally - and suggest such a thing?
"Anything you have to say to me can be said in front of my wife." You hit back with determination as you move closer to Wanda, wrapping an arm around her waist, watching with harsh eyes as the two women shift on their feet uncomfortably.
"It's important, Y/n." It's Jean who insists, her tone pleading. "The safety of the Multiverse depends on it." The redhead adds, and all you can really hear is 'Wanda's safety depends on it.' The information makes you back down from your hostile posture, your gaze turning to Wanda with an expression full of doubt.
"Go." The brunette instructs sweetly, one hand on the side of your face, stroking your skin as she smiles at you with a reassuring smile. "I'll finish lunch. You're more than welcome to join us." Your wife turns to the visitors as she says the last part. You're not really sure if she means it or if she's just being polite, but you nod your agreement, and the two girls smile as they thank you for your kindness. Before you lead them out of the kitchen, you turn to the brunette again, and give her a long kiss on the cheek that makes her smile grow wider.
In silence, you invite the two women to follow you to the study room, and the conversation only comes back once you close the door behind you. "Have you been having nightmares?" It's Raven who asks, and you can't help but let out a short laugh.
"Are we starting a therapy session right now?" You hit back with a humor perhaps too harsh, making the blonde sigh wearily.
"I've been having nightmares for a while now. Terrible ones." Jean tells before you can apologize for your rudeness, and you look at her with curiosity. "They're not exactly the same, but pretty similar. Of me dying- no, being killed. By the same person. Always. The same woman."
"Wanda." You breathe out, disbelieving, the flashes from your own nightmares coming to your mind, visions of that redheaded woman who, despite having the same face and voice as your wife, in no way resembles her. "But, how-"
"Dreams are windows to our multiverse selves." Raven answers your question before you can finish asking it, and, noticing your furrowed eyebrows, she adds. "If you're dreaming about it, it's because it's happening to you in some other universe."
You can't help but laugh at the absurdity, shaking your head in disbelief. "That's impossible." You attest with your hands on your waist, but the blonde doesn't back away.
Instead, she asks. "What happens in your dreams after you die in them?"
"They end." You answer with a shrug of your shoulders, not really understanding what that has to do with anything, but Raven nods eagerly.
"It's because the bond is over. There's no way to connect to the mind of your other self if it no longer exists." She explains matter-of-factly, but you scoff once more with your eyes closed, taking your finger to the bridge of your nose to contain the sarcastic comments you want to make.
You think about the possibility that the multiversal trip might have burned out her brain. "This doesn't make any sense."
"Have you dreamed about me? About... Us." It's Jean who asks this time, and when you open your eyes again, you frown at her tear-laden eyes, looking at you with expectation.
"Jean..." Raven calls softly, but the redhead ignores her completely.
"Have you?" You clench your jaw at her insistence, not understanding how any of that matters. But you force your brain anyways, and you end up remembering a particularly vivid dream that lived hidden in your mind.
"I... I have, yeah." You let her know, swallowing drily, and the redhead's breath hitches, blinking to hold her tears back.
"How was it?" She asks a mixed tone of expectation and hesitation, her eyes never leaving yours.
"Jean-" Raven tries again, a hand on her friend's forearms. But the redhead just pulls her arms away harshly.
"It can be a memory!" The girl says angrily, but she soon takes a deep breath to calm her nerves, and looks at you to explain more gently, "it can be proof of what we're saying."
"I... I don't remember much of it," you stutter lightly, more because of the interaction of the two women in front of you than because of the memory of the dream itself, "but... We were at the Institute. It was one of Ororo's classes and we decided to skip it. We were wandering the halls until Logan walked by and saw us. We ran to get away from him and ended up in the pool area. We pushed each other in the pool and stayed there for a while until I said I was cold and you said-"
"Kiss me to make it better." Jean completes with the exact same words, her voice so low you can barely hear her. But you do, and you widen your eyes in complete shock. "It was our first kiss." The redhead tells with a nostalgic voice, wiping her tears away with the back of her hands. Raven moves closer to her to hug her friend.
You remain frozen in place, shaking your head in disbelief, "This doesn't make any sense."
"Y/n, we're sorry to dump all this information on you. But you need to know." Raven approaches you to place her hands on your shoulders, but you keep shaking your head, your eyes finding it hard to focus on any point in the room.
"But why?" You manage to ask finally, after some deep breaths, and the shapeshifter offers you a smile before pulling away.
"That brings us to our first question. Have you been having nightmares?"
"I have," you answer her this time, nodding your head in confirmation. "Like you. The same woman, almost every night." You add as you look at Jean, who was standing back a bit, trying to recover from the previous intense moment.
"They're the one." Raven attests as she looks to the redhead, who nods in confirmation.
"The one what?" You ask, your eyebrows furrowed once again, and the blonde woman takes her gaze back to yours.
"Do you know what a Nexus Being is?"
"I need to sit down." You grumble as you stumble back until your leg hits the couch, and you sit there with your elbows on your knees to support your hands that fly to your face. You feel the cushion next to you sink in.
"Nexus Beings are the keystones of the Multiverse." Raven explains, and Jean's next words sounding by your side lets you know she was the one who sat on the couch as well. "We affect probability, the flow of the Universal Time Stream."
"We?" You remove your hands from your face to look at her, a mixture of challenge and obliviousness, but the redhead offers you a small smile.
"Every universe has its own Nexus Being, to anchor the reality and keep their universe balanced. Safe." She explains gently, "I'm the Nexus Being on mine. And you are on yours."
The information makes you scoff in disbelief, your hands back on your face. "My god."
"Without a Nexus Being, the entire universe collapses, ceases to exist." Raven decides to keep explaining, even though your head is starting to hurt a little at the amount of information. "There has to be a Nexus Being at all times. When one dies, their vital energy is immediately transferred to another being, whether they have been born already or not." Jean hums in confirmation at her friend's words.
You raise your face to them once again to ask, "Why does this matter?"
"The Scarlet Witch," you have no idea what that name means, so Jean decides to elaborate, "the woman in our dreams, that version of Wanda... She's the Nexus Being of her world." You can't help but look away to the floor, unable to believe that Wanda - your sweet, loving, wife - was the cause of it all. "As we said, Nexus Beings can affect probability, manipulate reality to our will. But only up to a point, or their own power will turn against them." You furrow your eyebrows at the last sentence, not really knowing what she means by that. "The human body wasn't made to hold the load of all the vital energy in the universe." Raven explains as she notices your confused expression, and you swallow drily once you get what she means, nodding faintly. And Jean keeps talking. "This is why Wanda is looking for the Nexus Beings throughout the multiverse, to be able to break through these boundaries. And then, well... She kills them."
"But you said that when we die our vital energy or whatever is transferred to other people." You comment with confusion with your eyes on Raven, who nods her head in confirmation.
"It is. But she found a way to absorb them to herself." The blonde tells you.
Before you can ask any questions, Jean is holding your hand over your lap to emphasize her next words. "Y/n, without the vital energy, the entire universe collapses. She's not only killing the Nexus Beings. She's killing everyone from their realities."
"We have to stop her." Raven insists, looking at you pleadingly, making you let out a long sigh as you run your fingers through your hair. This is definitely too much.
"But how?" You ask finally, unable to see a way to defeat such a threat. Jean and Raven share a restless look, letting you know they are as clueless as you are.
But, in the end, the blond shrugs her shoulders. "We're trying to put together as many Nexus Beings as we can. We can't beat her alone, she's too powerful. But, who knows, as a group..."
"You gotta come with us, Y/n. We need you." Jean insists, and for a moment you consider your options, your gaze shifting between the girls. On one hand, the whole thing seemed absurd. Considering that all that information is in fact true, the possibility that you will fail looks too big. On the other, not to fight is to sign your death warrant. And, the worst of it all, the death warrant of your Wanda. That alone was enough for you to decide.
"Boy, Wanda's gonna be mad at me, I promised not to go on any more missions." You comment with a weak laugh, trying to lighten the mood. Would it be wrong to joke when you had such an eminent likelihood of everything going wrong? No matter what the correct answer to that question is, both women offer you equally faint smiles in response, looking relieved that you have agreed to help. But before you can talk much more about it, there are knocks on the door.
"Lunch is ready." Your wife says as soon as you open the door for her, her eyebrows furrowed at your pale expression. But you offer her a reassuring smile, kissing her forehead before letting her know you were coming.
"Let me be the one to tell her about it." You ask once Wanda is gone, your voice low so that only Jean and Raven can hear. "I... I don't want to worry her any more than she already will." The two women nod in understanding and the three of you go back to the kitchen, where the brunette is arranging the pans on the table.
Jean and Raven thank her for the meal, complementing the smell and the taste once they try it. Wanda thanks them with a smile and rosy cheeks, and you can't help but smile as well at the sight of her. But your smile soon falters as the conversation you just had with the visitors replays on your mind, and you let out a tired sigh, finishing chewing to place your hand over hers on her lap. "Wands, I'll have to go with them."
The brunette doesn't look at all pleased by the information. But more than uncomfortable by what you just said, she looks completely confused, and you take a deep breath, exchanging a look of confirmation with the other women in the room before telling Wanda about the whole thing - making sure to leave out and lighten what you felt was necessary so that she wouldn't be so nervous. The way her fingers tremble under yours lets you know it's not working.
"I'm coming with you." It's what she says after you're done talking, making not only you but also Jean and Raven widen their eyes in surprise.
"No, you're not." You tell her gently, but Wanda is determined, shaking her head eagerly.
"I'm not letting you go there alone if it's so dangerous!" Her tone is final, and even though you've never won a fight with her in the past, this time you're willing to try.
"Honey, please. I got this." You assure her, a lopsided smile before you joke, "I know you hate it when I say it, but I'm way stronger than you."
"Only in this universe apparently." She hits back on a grumble, and you sigh heavily at your failed attempt to try to soothe her. "I know her. It's me! If there's someone who can understand her and make her stop, that's me." The brunette insists, her eyes locked on yours in a challenge that you cannot let her win. You will not lose her.
But before you can tell her as much, Raven is speaking. "She might have a point."
"Don't agree to this." You ask tiredly, but the blonde doesn't back down, exchanging a look of confirmation with your wife. "Jean?" You turn to the redhead for backup, but the woman only offers you an apologetic smile before shrugging her shoulders. You shake your head, breathing heavily through your nose as your despair turns to irritation. "No. No, you-"
"This isn't your call to make." Wanda's voice is firm as she interrupts you, but it's also gentle, her hand on your face to reassure you. You close your eyes as you let out a sad sigh, lowering your head in defeat. Wanda calls for you softly, and waits for you to look at her to speak again. "For better and for worse, right?" She recalls your wedding vows, and you feel your eyes burning as you smile at her.
You're certain that the only time you felt more afraid than you do now was during the battle against Thanos, when the Mad Titan stabbed your wife - then-girlfriend - in the chest. An act that would have killed her had you not, in an act of desperation, used the infinity stones in your custody to conjure a spell to save her. The magic was so intense that it not only freed your beloved from all that suffering, but also disintegrated Thanos himself, putting an end to the most violent battle ever faced by Earth.
As a result, however, your body ended up absorbing all six stones, which were now part of your entire being. You don't remember how you did it, or how it all happened. All you know is that you woke up twenty-nine days later feeling more powerful than you had ever felt before, and next to a smiling Wanda, with tears of relief streaming down her cheeks.
This is the second time you have feared losing her, and at this point, you already know that this is your greatest weakness. You would do anything for her, no matter what, no matter how much you would get hurt in the process. Her well-being was your one and only goal. But, that didn't mean that you could make her choices for her, and you knew that very well. So you sigh, and nod your agreement, even if, deep down, you feel you shouldn't.
When lunch is over, Raven and Jean offer to do the dishes, to which you promptly disagree. But while the argument was going on, the redhead made a swift movement with her finger. In the next second, all the dishes were cleaned and back in their places. All of you laughed lightly, and you rolled your eyes when Wanda told you you should learn some useful trick like that. You whisper in her ear that you know many tricks she likes, and the brunette pinches your rib lightly in rebuke, her cheeks rosy as she walks away, telling you she needs to talk to her family to let them know you're going to travel.
As you run your gaze around the living room, you notice Raven looking out the window, eyeing the surroundings as if expecting an attack at any moment. The scene doesn't put you at all at ease, so you quickly divert your eyes to another point ahead. Near the fireplace, facing some picture frames, you see Jean. But instead of looking at the photos, the redhead's eyes are on you, averting them a second after you catch her staring. You decide to walk towards her.
"It must be hard... Seeing this." You comment as you look around, regarding what she had with your variant in her world. You know you died there from how she interacts with you, but you decide not to ask about it, figuring this must be tough enough on her.
"Yeah, I'm getting used to it." The redhead comments with a sad smile, her eyes falling to the pictures - many happy moments you shared with Wanda throughout your life. "In every other universe I visited you are together." The comment makes your eyes widen in surprise, your cheeks turning red. But you don't really know what to say about it, so you just grumble in understanding, following her gaze to the pictures.  "It's better than the ones you're dead, of course..." Her voice carries a bit of humor under the huge amount of sadness, so you decide to offer her a smile. She smiles back before shrugging. "But, I don't know, it just got me thinking."
"About what?" You ask with curiosity, and her smile is sad as she looks at you again.
"Thinking that maybe you only were with me in my universe because you didn't have Wanda." The redhead explains, the hurt in her eyes matching her voice. You think she's right. Wanda is your person, your soulmate, if such a thing exists. But it's not like you're gonna tell her that, of course.
"Nah, I can totally see your Y/n being in love with you." You hit back, which is true, letting out a smile as Jean furrows her brows at you. "I had a major crush on you during our years at the Institute."
"You did?" She asks, incredulously, her expression lighting up when you hum a confirmation. "What happened?" The redhead asks with curiosity, her eyes locked on you as you shrug your shoulders.
"You never really paid attention to me." You tell her simply, but the answer makes her laugh through her nose in disbelief.
 "No way." She shakes her head, and you let out a laugh.
"I'm telling you. You were too busy dating Scott Summers."
"Me?! Dating Scott?!" Jean sounds genuinely offended by that information, and you laugh some more, finding it amusing.
"What, you don't like him in your universe?" You ask with a mixture of humor and curiosity in your voice, and the redhead grimaces in complete disgust.
"No! The guy is a dickhead!"
"Well, he's pretty much a dickhead in this one too, I don't know what you ever saw in him." You decide to joke, because you prefer to see her laughing than to see her crying. But it doesn't take long for the redhead's laughter to stop, the sadness returning to her face.
"I know you're not mine to lose, Y/n," her tone is low and hurt, and her eyes drop to the ground before finding yours again, glistening with tears, "but I still don't want you to die. So let's be careful, okay?"
"Of course." You assure her softly, offering her a gentle smile. It's so weird, this situation. Ten years ago, having her look at you this way was all you wanted most. But now, you feel absolutely nothing. Nothing but sorrow and empathy for the permanent sadness in her eyes. The redhead smiles back with gratitude, and you watch as she moves away from you to sit on the couch with her hands on her face.
"Y/n?" Wanda's voice sounds then, and you spin on your heels to give her your full attention. "We should pack our things now." The brunette suggests with a stern face, the cell phone she used to talk to her family still in her hands
"Of course." You agree as you flash her a smile, but your wife doesn't reciprocate it before she turns her back to you and walks toward your shared room. You frown at her strange behavior, but follow her shortly after, telling the other girls, "we'll be right back."
"It looks like you finally got what you wanted, huh?" She says as she sets her travel bag on the bed. Just by that simple action and her pace as she grabs clothing lets you know that she is upset with you.
"What do you mean?" You’re confused as you shut the bedroom door behind you. Not understanding where she was coming from.
"Jean liking you back?" Wanda replies sharply as she folds a shirt in her hand and drops it into the bag in front of her in a hostile manner. Instead of neatly setting it down, like she normally would to make sure there was enough space for other essentials.
"What-" you can barely get the word out before she cuts you off.
"Don't play dumb, you know what I'm talking about." She shoots a glare in your direction before she disappears into the connected bathroom.
Finding her behavior odd, you scoff as you follow her. Stopping at the entrance and leaning against the wall you watch her grab things. "That was ages ago," you try to defend. "Wanda-" you try to block her path but she shoves past you, causing you to sigh and rub above your eyebrows as you think. You take a couple steps towards her but you don’t get too close. Staring at her back, you find it ridiculous that with everything going on right now, this was a problem. “After all these years together? All of this time that I’ve spent loving you, everything we’ve been through. You really believe Jean is still the person I want to be with?”
She spins to face you with a hand on her hip and a stern pout on her lips. Even after thinking it over, Wanda shrugs. “It wasn’t my name that you doodled all over your notebooks,” she reminds you with a pointed look. You drop your head to the side as you try to find a way to respond to that. “The years you spent waiting for her to notice you, I was waiting for you to notice me.” Now you really had no words. She knew everything about you, there was no way to defend yourself without making her question everything. “Besides, I heard what you said to her. About the other you choosing her over me.”
This time you get close to her and try to take her hand but she pulls it out of your grasp and sits on the bed as tears begin to burn her eyes. The thought that she could have been without you, without this life, in another universe because someone else had you breaks her heart. “Wanda,” you start softly as you kneel in front of your wife. “The woman lost the love of her life. I was almost in her shoes once. The worst thing that anyone could tell me is that what we had wasn’t ever real. Especially if it was coming from someone that shares your face,” you have both of your hands resting on her thighs to ground her to you instead of the thoughts that were upsetting her. “She’s already had to see the person she loves, not choose her in any other universe. Would you have liked me to bring her more pain by telling her that I know in my gut, the version of me that loved her would have chosen you over her?”
She places her hands on top of yours, making you hopeful that you were breaking through her irrational thoughts. However, Wanda was still being stubborn. She pulls your hands off of her and stands to busy herself with packing again. Feeling at a loss, you decide to take the focus away from the past and from the conversation she walked in on. There was no way to rewrite history and there was clearly no reasoning with her. So, you had to remind her of the present, remind her what’s at stake.“Where is this coming from? We’ve been friends with the Jean we know for years and you’ve never gotten upset like this,” you start as you rise to try and be heard by her.
Wanda stops when she finds a present she had been hiding from you in one of the drawers. She shuts it and sighs as she settles her mind enough to answer you. “I don’t know, seeing that look on her face, knowing that she is missing the you that was hers… I was in that place, you know? When no one knew if you would wake up again. They were trying to prepare me to accept that you might be gone for good and I…” she wipes a few of her tears as she looks at you again. “I guess, she just reminds me of my fears. That I could have been her if our world didn’t need you. If I were in her shoes, I probably would have tried to take you from her.”
Her admission makes you smile lovingly, “I don’t doubt it, my love. Clearly there is a version of you out there without me and look at all of the damage she is causing.” You stand in front of her again and this time when you reach for her hands, she lets you take them. “The time we have right now… I don’t want to worry you with worst case scenarios but, with this mission there is no guarantee of how things will turn out. You know it and I know it. So please, let’s not waste a second of it being upset over things that are out of our hands.” This seems to get through to her and she agrees in a warm embrace.
“You’re right,” she says into your shoulder. “We need to focus on the mission. It doesn’t look like there’ll be room for mistakes with this one.” Wanda tightens her arms around you to let you know how much she needs you. “You do what you need to but please, remember that you are still human. If what the Ancient One warned you is true, you cannot use too much of your power. Even if it might feel like it at some point, it's not the only way. There has to be other options. Even if you might not think there are. You have to come up with something else. Let someone else be the hero. I cannot lose you,” she begs you to make the promise. You sigh through your nose, not certain that you can make it and keep it. The last thing you ever wanted to do was make an empty promise to your wife.
So you don’t make it. You pull back just enough to rest the palm of your hand against her cheek. Your soft, loving gaze is met with one of concern and fear. “I love you, my љубав," you tell her softly, smiling when she scrunches her nose in that adorable way you love.
"Your Serbian is getting better." She points out almost proudly, making your smile grow wider.
"I have a really good teacher." You hit back with a shrug of your shoulders, her little laugh relaxing your every muscle. You close your eyes before meeting your lips with hers, feeling her sigh against you as she matches the kiss at the same slow pace. “Let’s finish packing so we can get this over with already.” Wanda nods and promptly returns to the task as she fights the tears from your lack of compliance with her request. She knew the kind of person you were, the type to lay everything down on the line in order to save everyone. She loved that about you, normally. Admired it, even. However, with a mission of this volume of unpredictability, she almost hated that part of you that would give everything if it saved the world. Especially if it protected her.
