“You’re a gremlin. You know that, right?” Stephanie sighed looking at the chaos before her.

Cass’ bedroom seemed to be filled to the brim with every pillow available in Wayne Manor. From her brothers’ favorite bed pillows to couch cushions to various decorative pillows from everywhere in between. She had fortified the room into the ultimate landscape of plush and fabric.

“Takes one… to know one,” Cass’ muffled voice called from somewhere within the pillow fortress.

Steph crouched down to peer inside the dimly lit opening, more of a rabbithole than a proper pillow fort ‘doorway’.

“Using blankets for your roof probably would’ve been better.”

“But that’s not… as challenging,” Cass countered, her voice somehow sounding impossibly farther.

The blonde gave a sigh before following her girlfriend inside, hunched down on her hands and knees and careful not to touch any of the pillows at her sides, lest they end up buried alive underneath them.

“How the hell did you get fairy lights in here?”

“Very carefully,” the Bat laughed, “But Tim and Alfred helped.”

“And in exchange they got to keep their pillows, I take it?”

“Yup!”

Stephanie laughed incredulously, finding her way through the maze of pillows, eventually finding Cass’ hiding spot, a corner in which she was curled underneath a blanket, Tim’s gameboy in hand as her eyes were focused with laser intensity on its small screen.

“Whatcha got?” Steph asked, snuggling in next to the Bat and pulling the blankets up to cover them both together.

“Pokémon,” Cass explained, adjusting herself so Steph could watch her play, “Tim said... it helps with strategy.”

Steph gave a snort, “More like he’s hoping you’ll find something rare to trade with him.”

“He’ll have to beat me… in a battle first.”

“A pokémon battle or a real-life battle?”

Cass paused the game as she thought it over for a moment, nodding to herself as she found her answer. “Both.”

Steph chuckled before resting her head against Cass’ shoulder, content to watch and listen as the Bat made quick work of another gym leader.

Their silence was only broken a half-hour later, as Jason’s heavy steps from down the hall were followed by a bellowing, “Quit stealing all the pillows!”

And they all soon came tumbling down around the girls.

people being pissed about dick faking his death is especially infuriating because like. dick was literally forced into it. bruce BEAT him until he agreed. like i genuinely think that - and the majority of bruce’s writing for the past several decades - makes no sense with his prior characterization but it’s STILL CANON and it INFURIATES me

THANK YOU THIS IS WHAT IVE BEEN SAYING AND SAYING!

I hate that take more than anything else currently, because like...Dick was KIDNAPPED. TORTURED. UNMASKED. MURDERED.....and A DAY LATER Bruce beats him up under the guise of sparring that Dick NEVER agreed to, guilt trips him about keeping his family safe - aka Dick’s NUMBER ONE HOT BUTTON TRIGGER - and VICTIM BLAMES him for getting captured in the first place, and giving up some of his allies under the influence of Power Woman’s MAGIC LASSO OF SUBMISSION.

Bruce of course, had actually ALREADY told people by then that Dick was dead, so its not even like Dick ever actually had any agency in regards to that part, at most he only ‘agreed’ to just NOT counter the claims of being dead that were already out there. The damage had already been done anyway! By the time Dick even KNEW people thought he was dead....PEOPLE WERE ALREADY HURT AND GRIEVING! There was NEVER anything he could do about it!

And so then Dick goes undercover FOR HIS FAMILY’S SAKE even though he’d probably rather nothing more than to be WITH his family as he recovered...entrenched behind enemy lines with NO back up, NO extraction plan, and SHITTY intel, given Bruce had no idea about the Hypnos implants being Lex tech....forced to work with people like Doctor Netz who sexually harassed him at EVERY routine check up Dick, a canon rape survivor, was FORCED to endure....probably spending that entire year dreaming of nothing but how good it would be to FINALLY reunite with his family....

and upon doing so - Jason hits him. Tim says he expected better. Barbara says he’s disappointed her again.

ONLY DAMIAN WAS HAPPY TO SEE HIM!

And the others didn’t even like....feel a need to make up with him before he went BACK undercover INTO danger, possibly to die.

And THEN! He gets trashed in OTHER books too, like in Batgirl where Luke Fox guilt trips him about how his dad mourned for Dick too and was really fucked up about it, or in Batman and Robin Eternal where TIM punches him too, and even DAMIAN ends up backhanding him before the end.

Ugggggh, and people go on and on about Dick’s legendary temper, like he isnt the ONE person who’s been made the punching bag of every member of his family except for Cass and Duke, like he’s ever struck any of them just out of anger and to make himself feel better.

LOL anyway, yeah I have strong feelings about that plot too, and no need to apologize for going through all my posts hahahaha!

i licherally just read all her stories where steph was robin she had so much potential it couldve been great if dan didio didnt SUCK

i’m so close to doing the same thing because i love her as robin so much, like her dynamic with bruce could be amazing (and actually was amazing when it was well written) and being robin meant SO much to her, i think she could’ve had such an impact in batman’s history if she was allowed to be robin for longer. also it’s disgusting what they did to her character one day i will snap and murder everyone that was involved with that

i mean i’m one of the people who wants jason and thad to get along but specifically in the context of an au where thad got a redemption arc. i really hated how thad’s story ended because it WOULD’VE been easy to give him said redemption arc but instead they went the “he kills bart and wally immobilizes him for eternity” route and i’m just. not a fan of that

Yeah exactly! In the context of canon Thad and Jason would Never Get Along but if DC had given Thad a redemption instead of turning him Like That then I could’ve seen it!

I was also stoked about Talia training Jason but then DC can’t write Talia to save their lives and had her and Jason sleep together to “get back at Bruce” or w/e and it’s hhhhh

The Titan continued shelving book after book, pointedly ignoring her girlfriend’s pleas.

“Pranking Zatara can wait,” she reasoned, “Organizing this library can not.”

“You know the house rearranges the shelves on a whim, right?” Lori countered, “It’s, um… What’s the goddamn- sisyphean!”

Raven quirked an eyebrow, a small, proud smile gracing her lips. “Someone’s been studying.”

“Yeah, well, the SATs aren’t gonna pass themselves.”

“What happened to dropping out and living as a full-time bog-lady?”

The mage gave a shrug, leaning against the bookcart the Titans was using. “I’m keeping that as my solid B-plan. My C-plan is taking a gap year, though.”

“Oh please tell me that you’ve got plans D through Z all accounted for too.”

Lori clicked her tongue, “I got bored around N so I never made it all the way through.”

The pair shared a light chuckle, before Raven turned back to her work.

The mage checked her phone as her girlfriend continued, full steam ahead, before giving a sigh of defeat.

“Zach’s show isn’t until seven anyways… And it’d probably have a better effect if he comes back to his dressing room after-”

Giving a noncommittal hum, the Titan began to push the cart forward, wheeling it around to the next row of shelves. This forced Lori off of her place from the cart. Not to be deterred, she followed closely behind the empath. She began fidgeting with one of the lighter books, twirling it in her hands or fanning the pages back and forth.

“But there is… something else I could be doing in the meantime…”

“Studying,” Raven suggested, her voice firm, but not unkind, “Your math scores are still horrendous, Alice.”

“Yeah,” she sighed, rubbing at her neck with one hand as she closed her eyes for a moment, “... I need your help.”

“With math? Alice-”

“Yeah, I know. But I… don’t trust anyone else. All of the nerds at my school are so condescending. And the teachers suck even more-”

“Math wasn’t exactly a priority in my formative years.”

“Please, Raven. I don’t have anyone else to turn to-” She set the book down, a genuine plea in her expression.

The empath rolled her eyes. “Traci offered to let you join her study group-”

“Traci is a nerd-”

“A nerd who wants to help,” Raven countered.

“A nerd is a nerd,” Lori said, waving a dismissive hand.

“Hmm, and what does that make me? If I decide to help you?”

“A… really, really cool girlfriend?” she guessed, a hopeful note in her voice.

“C’mon, Zechlin, you can do better than that.” As Raven laughed, she pushed the cart forward again, only to be stopped by the mage putting her foot on its bottom shelf.

They locked eyes. A question in the Titan’s, a plea still in the mage’s.

“Ugh, okay! Fine!” she relented, “But if you bomb the math section again, you better not blame me.”

“No promises!” Lori laughed, snatching the empath’s hand and leading her to a table she used as her own personal study space.

The House of Mystery had a way of adapting to the needs of its occupants, after all. This next generation of mystics was no different.

i really want to write a fic dealing with bruce’s abuse of dick in the forever evil arc. like we’ve seen responses to rhato #25 & batman #71 but i can’t think of any that address that and like. idk. nu52 & rebirth bruce can fuck off, i loathe him. the rest of the bats deserve better

I would definitely love to see that, because it really bothers me that like....I mean, there are definitely some fics out there that address the stuff the comics never touched on, like the fact that Dick actually did die and Jason, Tim, Babs and Damian were never told that in the comics, or others that have them finding the cowl footage of that scene in the cave and seeing what Bruce did there and being apologetic.....I just...I admit I want more, because I’ve still yet to find a fic that actually addresses ALL of it, AND shows Jason, Tim and Babs not just like, generically apologizing and being like “oh we didn’t know,” but ACTUALLY holding themselves accountable and saying shit, there’s no excuse for the way we treated you, I can’t believe we did that.

Because the other thing is.....even without them all knowing that Dick really did die, or just how exactly Bruce ‘convinced’ Dick to do the Spyral op.....I’ve yet to see it acknowledged in fics or canon what everyone DID know.

Which is the last any of them saw of Dick, he’d been captured by other dimensional counterparts of the very heroes he knew and looked up to, like Superman/Ultraman....tortured by these people for days.....AND had the Lasso of Submission used to get details of superhero allies in Chicago from Dick, that led to them killing these people. We SAW this being televised, along with Dick’s unmasking, aka something that without the magic Spyral fix was always going to mean he was either going to have to abandon his identity of Nightwing OR his identity as Dick Grayson....he couldn’t keep both, not with the whole world knowing him as both now....

Like, and keeping in mind, one of the most consistent things about Dick’s characterization is his massive guilt complex and tendency to blame himself for EVERYTHING (and gee wonder why, the way everybody blames him for everything in these panels, fics and more)....like, that bit about people dying because of what he revealed under the influence of the Lasso is not some minor thing either, its basically what led to his breakdown in the Blockbuster arc in New Earth canon....people dying because of him. (Also it had just happened with his circus in the Death of the Family arc just a couple arcs prior to this, too?)

So ANY which way you spin it....even without knowing that Dick actually died or the details of how and why he ended up at Spyral....every single member of his family DID know that at the time Dick ‘agreed’ to that op....he had to be at rock fucking bottom, pretty much the lowest point he’s ever been. And they are all plenty familiar with trauma, there’s no way to not realize that a person in Dick’s state and position literally couldn’t be in a sound state of mind to make such a huge decision to the best of his ability....which is WHY Bruce was able to manipulate him into it by carefully pushing all his obvious buttons...guilt, fear of disappointing Bruce, and failing to protect his family.

So there was NEVER any excuse for how the others treated him, even with as little as they DID know....and yet in canon and in fanon, when did we ever see anyone even bring up those events, ask how Dick was about....all of that. How he’d dealt, if he’d even dealt at all, given he went straight from OH HAI MASSIVE TRAUMA to being embedded in a SPY organization where breaking his cover or showing weakness could literally get him killed at any moment. With no one to have his back, no one to confide in, no one to help him deal with the lingering trauma that had to still be hanging over him that entire time, not to mention afterwards....

And everyone’s just like....well fuck you dude, how could you do this to us. So manipulative, so selfish.....and they said all this to Dick Grayson, the guy who cares more about family than pretty much anyone else in the DC universe, the one who pretty much is the ONLY one who keeps trying to get them to BE a family!

If Dick truly wanted to be selfish, where do they think he’d rather have been? At home, with his family, recovering, being told it was okay, it was gonna be alright? Or completely isolated from everyone he knew and loved, with no idea what was going on with them, when or even IF he’d ever see them again, if THEY’D all still be alive before he figured out a way to get himself out of Spyral without help, if Bruce wasn’t going to or wasn’t able to extract him (bc srsly, the second he was there, its not like it was as easy as just going ‘oh hey decided i dont want to be a spy after all, I’ll just be going now.’)

And so once again Dick not only had to, but was EXPECTED to give up what HE wanted to do....and once again, he somehow was made out to be the bad guy for it.

And the way they did it too, like.....how many times, through how many continuities has Dick tried reaching out to Jason, trying to get Jason to acknowledge their bond as Robins, as brothers....only to FINALLY have Jason do it...by weaponizing it and throwing it in his face to guilt trip him. How many times has he tried to get his brothers to all get along, and the first time he sees them truly unified...its to take a stand against him, for the thing he NEVER wanted to do precisely BECAUSE he was all too aware of how it would hurt them? And that he STILL only ended up going through with, because he was badgered by Bruce into accepting it as the ONLY way to ensure their safety?

(Which, another thing that NEVER gets mentioned is like.....as much as I hate Bruce for putting Dick in that situation, its not like the threat Spyral posed wasn’t very fucking real, and could’ve been very fucking disastrous if Dick hadn’t brought Nazi Zombie Ghost guy or whatever down from the inside. And did I hear a fucking THANK YOU in there anywhere? From ANYONE?)

Then again, does he ever get a thank you for any of the times he puts his family over what he wants?

Nope.

Cuz they EXPECT it of him.

He’s their brother, and they all EXPECT him to be better than Bruce and pick up Bruce’s slack where Bruce’s emotional obtuseness leaves off. THAT’S NOT HIS JOB! HE’S NOT THEIR PARENT! HE’S ONE OF THEM!
