Publishing has always been a fucking nightmare, but now it’s a layer of hell. It’s not enough that writers be good at what they do. Writers have to maintain an active social media presence and cultivate a following. Be available.
They have to be conventionally attractive enough to look good enough to see on a screen, aesthetically pleasing, kind, funny, up-to-date on trends, socially aware but not so controversial that they turn off a brand from California from slapping their discount code on a video promoting a book.
They have to do all of this with no media training, with little help from the companies that are supposed to be doing this for them.
Of course, a lot of this isn't possible for say, the 40-something mother of two who teaches English at a school and writes on the side. She’s boxed out of an already complex industry that already has enough walls.
On some level, I think authors have always marketed themselves a little, but we’ve reached such a crazy point where we’re demanding the author become the influencer. Accessibility in publishing has narrowed from an inch to a sliver. And that inch was hard enough to get in as is.

rereading Fairest bc I have my own copy now (yay $2.50 at a used bookstore!) and so far it's as lovely as I remember
but anyway I do like how Aza's "ugliness" is characterized by people actually treating her badly because of it. People talk about the stereotype of YA protagonists being like "oh poor me I'm so ugly" in an attempt to make them relatable but the narrative actually treats them like they are gorgeous and every character that isn't a villain finds them attractive.
Vs. here it's like. yeah her self perception is all tied up in cultural ideas of beauty and she's definitely not objective either, and a lot of what she thinks is inherent to her ugliness is all wrapped up her related social anxiety, etc.
but! It's very refreshing to see a book that deals so much with beauty standards actually commit to it! It's not like she's just vain and obsessed with looks! You can tell she wants to be beautiful because she wants to be treated like a person! The way it is just that blatant! Most people are rude to her or ignore her! And she makes it worse in her head and compounds the problem by letting her own insecurity draw attention to herself, but at the end of the day, she's right! People would treat her better if she looked different!
The details that we get about her appearance are not even "ugly" traits, either! Like we get the pale skin, black hair, red lips combo pulled directly from the traditional Snow White fairy tale, where those traits are supposed to be beautiful and desirable! But in this culture, apparently those traits are a part of her ugliness, which just perfectly highlights how the beauty standards are inherently arbitrary! And yet! They affect her life in real ways! It doesn't matter much how we, the reader, picture her; we believe that she is ugly because people treat her like she is!
Anyway I especially love how her insecurity regarding her size is portrayed. The combo of feeling small and meek and timid on the outside but being large and imposing on the outside. She feels like she takes up too much space. She doesn't want to wear anything at all attention grabbing. She doesn't know what to do with her limbs. Her biggest fear about demonstrating her magical singing trick is that she would have to show people how she moves her stomach (the horror!)
anyway everyone ever should read Fairest. I could write 12.5 dissertations on it. fantasy books for 12-year-old girls are the most serious fiction in the world actually

People who argue against the idea that “Beauty is skin deep”, aren’t actually thinking about beauty. Hear me out.
 There’s “Beautiful”, “Hot,” and “Sexy”
Hot is the main thing most folks aspire to be. You’re gorgeous , and absolute 10, everyone wants to be affiliated and is instantly attracted to you because your visuals hit them like a bullet. This is what makes people believe that they can live life on easy mode( i.e. “pretty privilege”, face card”, etc) because if all they are is a visual knockout & the rest more or less does itself.
Sexy is a skill, a combination of charisma and confidence. Visually, you could be a 3, but the right charisma & confidence can boost you up to a 7. People are so enamored with how good you make them feel and how well you flirt, they don’t even notice or care that you’re not as hot as your stunning counterparts.
You can be Hot and Sexy. Both are a potent combination and what many folks envision when they hear the word “beautiful”; someone who is not only a visual knockout with folks clamoring to be around them but, has the charisma and confidence to own every room & those within it just by being there. But that’s not what “Beautiful” actually is.
What happens when you age and all of your visual features start to fade? What about your personality? Are you a good person? Is your mental health in check? Do you manipulate others or are problematic? What about your daily habits? Do you take care of yourself?
BEAUTIFUL cares less if you’re three or a 10 visually. It’s the way you carry yourself, the way you treat others, the kindness you have, your goals and aspirations. It’s the work you put into how you take care of yourself mentally, physically, and emotionally. It’s the wisdom & humility you’ve accumulated in your existence to shape who you are & the way you share your aura with others so they can see the beauty within themselves. Beauty stays with you long into your years, makes your partners, friends and loved ones see you with the same wonderful lens. When you come up in conversation, it makes someone describe all the positive internal parts they fell in love with first, while the physical attractiveness is given, but as an afterthought. “Hot” and “Sexy” to some extent avoids showing flaws whenever necessary to maintain an image. “Beautiful” embraces all of that & understands it’s an important part of you.
This is what folks don’t think about when they come to the argument that beauty is, in fact, skin deep. It involves the totality of a person, which most of them can’t conceptualize because they mostly allowed media to convince them that being hot/pretty/sexy is the equivalent of being “beautiful” as those people seem to get all the benefits for simply existing. And while, yes, a fatal flaw of our monkey-brain wiring is that we, as a society, tend to favor those who are visually appealing or can charm us, at the end of the day we most treasure those who have a wonderful soul, beautiful deep down. Our best friends, family members, mentors & partners can never hold a candle to those “hot” people.
Because Beauty is skin deep.

It's true that beauty is subjective. But i don't know why I find Way so so pretty whenever he's on screen. Like take context out for a second and he looks sooo unreal and ethereal in EVERY SINGLE FRAME, even when he's doing some of most atrocious things. Maybe it's because of the type of role where he is sad and crying and lonely for like 95% of the time but I haven't been so smitten with any thai bl actor ever before. Even though Vegas was sexy and pathetic,( I was his hardcore fan btw), I didn't felt this level of attractiveness for his sad face at just first glance. I accidentally stumbled on ep 7 couch scene on YouTube and i had to check the drama. I didn't know he was the antagonist.😯 Why they had to cast such angelic face as villain, then give him most amazing outfits and film him so beautifully in pink and blues? Like for 11 episode that man was doing nothing except being sad and crying. that kind of role would most probably bore me otherwise if I do just surface level watching. But for some reason I can't take my eyes off everytime he's on screen. I'm so sorry I think he's too beautiful that I'm being gaslit by the show into liking him the most.
nut, way’s actor, has the face that makes you do a double take for sure. there’s something very alluring about him, especially in this role. his big sad eyes are a killer, his fake smile is so bitchy i might die, but i also would’ve loved for him to show someone (pete pls) his genuine laugh because he looks like a fox when he laughs and it’s so pretty! instant knock out.
i really really love vegas’ face, i absolutely loved him in kp, but way is a character that really showed me what pretty privilege and pretty bias means and how strong it can be. the way i turn a blind eye on his wrongdoings is on another level completely. he SA babe? well, you see, he’s sad, he’s having a hard time, he needs love, i stand with my cancelled babygirl 🥹💀
