If your periods/menstrual cycle correlate with
- Depressive Episodes
- Self Harm
- Suicidal Thoughts
- Severe or Increased Anxiety
- Sudden or Intense Mood Changes
Please consider asking your medical practitioner about Premenstrual dysphoric disorder. I had no idea that the emotions I was feeling were beyond the regular levels. I was always told by media that periods made you irrational, emotional, and even depressed. While it is true that many of us who menstruate will have those side effects, they should not ever be severe. If they cause you significant distress you may be struggling with something different. I found out only after my periods were stopped by testosterone that I was never supposed to suffer that much. If you may be experiencing this speak up, you aren’t alone and you have options!

Kinda niche, but I've spent the last five days feeling like I'm losing my mind so here are some PMDD memes. However bad you think it is based on these memes, it's worse.

I was recently diagnosed with an incredibly rare neurodevelopmental disorder caused by a genetic mutation on the PPP2R1A gene. The disorder is so rare it doesn't have a fancy name yet 😅 the worst symptoms of my disorder is the mental illnesses I deal with. Add onto that childhood abuse targeted at me because of my undiagnosed issues and I got the shit storm of mental health.
I have been diagnosed with C-PTSD, ADHD, OCD, PMDD (premenstrual dysphoric disorder), Borderline Personality Disorder, Excoriation Disorder (severe skin picking), and Sensory Processing Disorder. Informally diagnosed as Autistic.
My entire life, I just thought I was a broken human being. Turns out I just have a genetic disorder that literally causes me to lose my mind 🤣 I always knew that mental illnesses liked to come in groups, but I got hit with the one-two punch that has left me unable to function on my own

Hi!! We’ve been curious, does any other system see an increase in switching & general headmate activity linked to a menstrual cycle? Our body struggles with pmdd and we feel really embarrassed about mental illness symptoms being exacerbated by it. We’ve even had an alter appear specifically linked to helping us cope with severe period pain. Honestly we’d be super interested to see anyone talk about how they cope w periods linked to plurality.
-🌈☁️, origin unknown
oh yes, we absolutely experience this. we tend to get really blurry when we’re on our period. we’re also a mostly nonbinary-transmasc system, and we have a fem alter who fronts a lot during our period to help alleviate some dysphoria. we also have some parts who our gatekeeper keeps from fronting during our period in order to prevent more harm.
having pmdd (premenstrual dysphoric disorder) is nothing to be ashamed or embarrassed of. us folks with periods deserve to be able to openly discuss the often intense physical and emotional pain that comes along with menstruation. our own system experiences intense symptoms when we’re menstruating, including debilitating cramps and body aches, nausea, lightheadedness, migraines, major fatigue, and severe depression and mood swings. it’s rough. we pretty much live a week of hell once a month, which we’re sure many many other folks also experience.
as far as how we personally deal with this…
- go easy on ourselves. sometimes we take a day or two off of work if we can afford it. we may ask for additional help from our partner system. we try to recognize our limits, and not push ourselves too far.
- hydrate and medicate. we try to drink plenty of water and take pain relievers as necessary. naproxen sodium (aleve) has been quite helpful for us in the past. we also try to make sure we’re eating fruits and vegetables, which really do seem to have a positive effect on us.
- rest, rest, rest. we go to bed early. we take naps when we can. we break up household chores into tiny parts that we can do in pieces.
- we do our best to practice gentleness, forgiveness, and compassion to each other inside. we try to do this all the time, but when we’re on our period, it’s especially important. sometimes parts lash out, get frustrated, or struggle to cope with the pain, and we try to show each other some grace and understanding during these difficult times.
we’d encourage anyone who wants to please join in on this discussion. we shouldn’t ever feel embarrassed or ashamed for talking about a normal bodily process that no doubt affects many of us. how does menstruation affect your system? and how does your system cope with the challenges that periods present?
🌈☁️, we’re wishing your system comfort and rest whether or not you’re currently struggling with your pmdd. thanks for reaching out, and take care of yourselves!

I found this rant in my notes from that time a couple months ago when the pharmacy lost my birth control prescription right before a holiday weekend and made me deal with unmedicated PMDD for a week and I was scared out of my mind. Have an angry rant about the inadequacies of the American healthcare system.
When Julian Bashir was a child, he thought that if he was bad, the doctors would make sure he got sick. He grew out of it. But… if you live with a chronic medical condition that requires medical attention to manage, this is kind of just how your life works.
You have to do all the right paperwork and go to all the right appointments and say the right things in order to maintain access to the treatment you need to be healthy. Especially if the meds you need are a controlled substance. You have to be the good patient. You have to, or you’re in for a significant amount of pain and suffering. It feels like a threat hanging over your head.
And sometimes, you’ll do everything right, and then something happens outside of your control to screw everything up. Maybe there’s a shortage of the medication you need. Maybe the pharmacy loses your prescription. But suddenly you don’t have what you need to be okay, and you hurt. More than that, you’re terrified. You don’t want to be in pain. You don’t want to suffer.
You just want to be okay; why is that so hard?
And the doctors don’t mean to hurt anyone! They don’t understand the amount of power they hold over us. They really do, for the most part, want to help. But the system is a mess of power imbalances and red tape and fear fear fear. There are too many bureaucratic road blocks that keep people from getting medical attention. There are too many doctors who don’t give a shit. Who don’t listen to their patients. Who assume the worst of us. We just don’t want to hurt anymore. We don’t mean to be a bother, we just want to be okay.
And we have to put our wellbeing in their hands. We have to hand them our lives and our sanity and hope they hold them gently. And if they don’t? We have to pick a new doctor and do it all over again. What other choice do we have?

pmdd anon here and thanks for the input! i would like to embrace the community by labelling myself as intersex, but at the same time i would hate to not be welcomed or considered valid as "actually" intersex, as well as the fact that i don't know if it would be considered overstepping just because you're okay with all these variations being linked together based on overlap/experience alone. i may just say questioning instead, but like i mentioned before, any sort of other clarification seems impossible to find, or i just haven't found it yet despite searching.
so i guess my next question would be, what should i call myself? an ally? a broader term for intersex than y'all already have? something in between? reproductively disabled? something else? i'm very lost so help is appreciated 💛
reproductively disabled seems like the most accurate to me. but sex nonconforming may work, too, as i imagine part of why you're drawn to the intersex label is having a different experience of something related to sex. i suppose from there you could also say you're reproductively nonconforming. and there's also the term extersex, for people who don't know if they're dyadic or intersex. i think the term sex queer also exists but im not sure. could make it exist anyway XD

In my pmdd week once again and don't know what to do with myself. Any tips from people for like, I don't even know. Not imploding? I'll be staying in as much as possible till the switch clicks back which doesn't help much but at least it contains things a bit better.
Edit to say I feel like Cristina Yang from Grey's when she's screaming SOMEBODY SEDATE ME

This is not a paid endorsement or something, I just used the service recently and thought others struggling with treating mental health issues may also find it super helpful.
For the past three years since my PMDD diagnosis I have struggled to find medications that actually did their jobs treating my mental health issues and doing so without significant side effects.
Tumblr media
GeneSight is a mail-away program where you send them a DNA swab of your cheek for analysis. This can be done at the doctor or at home. In a couple weeks they’ll send you a report that will look at and grade how you metabolize a variety of drugs. (SSRIs, SNRIs, Anti-psychotics, the list continues). The results are easy to read and can help you and your doctor figure out dosages and specific drugs that will work best for you. My insurance covered everything with a note from my doctor about how hard it’s been to find drugs that work for me.
Tumblr media
My results have been very insightful. All the drugs I had trouble with in the past had red and yellow notes next to them, signifying I may have an adverse reaction or need a higher or lower dose. Many medications I had yet to try but was considering also fell in the red or yellow (which was a lot of them) and so I knew to avoid or be mindful of dosage when trying them. The medications falling in the green take-as-normal category are what my doc and I are starting to try now.
Tumblr media
GeneSight was also able to tell me how I’m apparently missing a few key enzymes and don’t process folic acid well (which is key for making dopamine and serotonin etc). Enzymes proteins are what allows them to look at potential issues with metabolizing and distributing drugs, as different medications use different enzyme proteins as on/off switches or are required for processing correctly. Because I’m missing or have a low count of several enzymes used for many psychiatric medications, I was running into issues.
Tumblr media
TLDR: For some people it’s really hard to find drugs that work for them without significant side effects. GeneSight is a DNA swab that will look at and grade how you metabolize a variety of drugs. The results can help figure out dosages and specific meds that will work best for you.
