Even when YGO was first airing in the US, once I got internet like a year into it, I remember "Puppyshipping" being THE most popular ship. Certainly was at least one of the biggest.

The discourse was about whether it was abusive, but it was all incoherent nonsense on both sides, with varying degrees of seriousness. I might've posted 1 time on the kaiba corporation forum my own opinion: in-world, yes abusive. in-fics, usually abusive. does this mean ppl shouldn't do it? nah, whatever. I understand why the dynamic interests people. Ship and let ship. Not my ship, though. Could never be.

See, my brother & I -unused to anime aside from Pokemon- thought we should root for only Main Character TM, but soon after jumped on our faves. Mai & Kaiba for me. He stuck with Yugi more to annoy me, & Joey as the blonde underdog in green (like himself; & this smelly green soccer jersey he never changed or washed cuz it was his "Joey shirt" 🤮).

So for me, it personally always felt skeevy to ship my faves with my brother's faves.

I started getting over it once Joey became obsessed with Mai in Waking the Dragons, but the little-brother-protector thing id with Kaiba was still stronger. Plus my brother spent the season annoyed with Joey's pining & hating Mai for her betrayal, so that helped disconnect them there.

I didn't really get into it the slightest bit til I came to tumblr, & I was part of the convo to rename it "violetshipping" to address the unwelcome default feeling of an abuse undertone & instead focusing on their complementary parallels & contrasts (which we all casually agreed was ok, canon, ic, but shouldn't be assumed within the very ship name), around the same time my relationship with my brother began deteriorating. So even though I got him into one last hurrah with DSOD, he's basically been lost to the right.

Tumblr's format also makes it a lot easier to stumble upon lots of things that just go by on your dash. I don't even remember seeing any puppyshipping fanart in the old forums & webrings of geocities & DeviantArt & AOL image searches, cuz I never searched for it. Read a couple fics trying to give it a chance, but they always ended up grossing me out with characterizations alone.

But ya know what I never did? Never actually called it incest, even though that's what it felt like to me in my own unique experience. & I never said *anything* to people online who shipped it. I did talk about it with friends in school, where you would've seen my full body language reaction for "I don't wanna be rude - I'm just reeeally not into it - cuz my brother - so I don't wanna talk about it." Which was perfectly fine & accepted!

Who *did* I ship Kaiba with? Well, most in-character? No one. As in he would actively choose no one. As sexy as he was, I didn't see him being interested in pursuing any kind of relationship or sex. (It would take another several years before I ever saw the term "asexual," to which my first reaction was, Oh! Like Kaiba!

I've used the joke of shipping him with money.

But once I found Silentshipping, I was hooked. They had interacted ONCE when Serenity yelled at him, & he was just like "Uhh..." where if it were a Disney movie, that'd be where he fell in love but hadn't realized it yet. Then they NEVER interacted again. Serenity hardly had much of a personality beyond "nice." It was a perfect blank slate to make anything up! & she was perfectly generic for girls to project onto, without fear of being called a self-insert or Mary Sue -the biggest worries of the time.

But I also loved how it connected Joey & Kaiba as, usually, either eventually or at least effectively, brothers-in-law, still pitted against each other. To me, it was sooo much better than actually putting them together.

It is sooo easy to not call everything "incest" that merely feels like brothers to you. It is sooo easy to not harass others for what they create, especially when they purposely help keep away anything you may not wanna see.

1. Why do you like or dislike this character?

Oh geez, I love my Joey boy so much, honestly. One thing that I think is really great, and I know I've seen other people mention this before, is just how real he feels. His characters is so multifaceted and goes through so much development, and he just feels like such a real dude.

2. Favorite canon thing about this character?

Just, everything? He has certified golden retriever energy with his deep love and loyalties, and it's one of the best things about him.

3. Least favorite canon thing about this character?

I do get annoyed by some of his more obnoxious behavior, and sometimes he's downright embarrassing, but that comes with the territory of being a teenager.

4. If you could put this character in any other media, be it a book, a movie, anything, what would you put them in?

I do think seeing Joey as a random bystander in a Marvel movie would be a good giggle.

5. What's the first song that comes to mind when you think about them?

Ship songs aside, the first song I could come up with was Hall of Fame by Gym Class Heroes. Boy knows what wants. Being at the top, right up there with Kaiba and Yugi, is his repeated goal throughout the series.

6. What's something you have in common with this character?

Brooklyn roots, going by the dub. My grandfather was born there, lived most of his life there. The other thing we have in common is being not on speaking terms with our mothers. 🥰

7. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you like?

The fandom never lets us forget where Joey started: violent, street-tough bully trying to scrape a life together basically on his own. As much as I love cute happy Joey chilling with the scapegoats and his pals, it would be such a disservice to forget where he came from.

8. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you despise?

I actually can't think of anything? I think the fandom generally treats Joey well.

9. Could you be roommates with this character?

That's actually a tough question. Depends on how good he is about cleaning up after himself. I think we could probably with something out though, a deal that involves trading chores for meals.

10. Could you be best friends with this character?

Probably, but I'd probably be at least half as naggy as Tea is with him. The "omg Joey use a napkin boi" kind of nagging, but I think he'd fit right in and we could tease and be goofy.

11. Would you date this character?

I'm married, so the safe answer is no lol

12. What's a headcanon you have for this character?

Boy had to get good at taking care of himself, so he shops deals and coupons and plans his meals around those, even when he's more financially secure. It's an ingrained habit.

15. What's your favorite ship for this character? (Doesn't matter if it's canon or not.)

Aw, I can only pick one? If I had to go based off of the Joey ships I've written, it would be Puppyshipping, but I think Puffshipping is crazy precious. And I can't shut up about Polarshipping anytime he and Mai are in a scene together, their chemistry is too good. So those are my top three. There's so many good Joey ships though!!!

16. What's your least favorite ship for this character?

I don't know that I have one? Not as far as popular ships go. I'm not big into Riskshipping, I can only see it as being unhealthy even with Mokuba aged up. (Irateshipping and Fadeshipping aren't necessarily healthy either, but they're very fascinating.)

17. What's a ship for this character you don't hate but it's not your favorite that you're fine with?

So, on the DM shipping list is Babbleshipping, which is Joey x Kisara, which I just can't imagine working (and I've never seen any fanworks for it either), but I also find the idea of Joey swooping in as Mr. Steal Your Dragon Girlfriend from Kaiba kinda hilarious.

18. How about a relationship they have in canon with another character that you admire?

Joey's got a lot of great pals, but I think Tristan is just such a solid bro to him throughout the whole show (except for hitting on Serenity which is still so weird to me cause she's 12). But the advice he was giving him in Season Four regarding Mai was honestly solid advice: "give up on her, man, you're just going to get hurt if you keep going like this." It's just too sweet. Joey doesn't listen to him ofc because this boy never gives up.

19. How about a relationship they have in canon that you don't like?

Obviously I wish he had a better relationship with his dad, but it's Yugioh: good dads aren't allowed.

20. Which other character is the ideal best friend for this character, the amount of screentime they share doesn't matter?

I think Duke is actually a godd logical, grounding, down to earth presence for Joey to be around. Duke is not afraid to call him on his crap, and I can just see then getting along pretty well, esp once Joey's matured just a little bit more.

22. If you're a fic reader, what's something you like in fics when it comes to ths character? Something you don't like?

I appreciate when people write him with the accent, even if it's only slightly. It's just a fun detail imo. I appreciate the details people create to fill in his exact background as a fighter and how he lives and stuff. The attention to detail with the roots of who he is as a person.

23. Favorite picture of this character?

The first thing that popped into my mind is a fanart of his previous small smile, but I assume this is asking for canon images, so... Just look how happy and cool he is!!!!! And his Lord of Red appearance is just too heckin cool for me to not include.

24. What other character from another fandom of yours that reminds you of them?

I think Ashe Duran from FE3H would be able to relate to him with their roots in poverty and both changing (Joey from a bully and Ashe from a thief) into becoming the best, most noble versions of themselves that they can be. They have the sweetest smiles and would do anything to protect their little siblings.

Rock from Nanbaka is a little similar I guess, but Rock comes from money and has a much more refined palette when it comes to food. Rock was still a gang member though, just like Joey, and they both think with their stomachs and are still brawlers. Also literally delinquents.

If I had to compare him to someone in UtaPri, I'd say he's got the same mischief vibes as Reiji, but the better match is the happy sunshine child Otoya Ittoki who's been through a lot and had a rough childhood but won't let it get him down. The future is full of opportunity for these boys.

25. What was your first impression of this character? How about now?

Oh geez, let me think back to twelve year old me... I really can't recall. I remember one of my first impressions in fandom was rejecting puppyshipping, partly just because it was popular, and then the more I learned about the characters separately, the more it compelled me, but that's another story.

My impression of him now? I love this man, he is a beacon of love and loyalty and getting better, which is a good example that all of us need sometimes honestly.

GUYS I KNOW SEASON FOUR HAD ISSUES BUT IT DID GOOD STUFF FOR JOEY. IT GAVE US HERMOS. IT GAVE US ATLANTIS JOEY. JOEY IS JUST AS IMPORTANT AS YUGI AND KAIBA IN A METAPHYSICAL SENSE. Seriously though, imagine how validated that made Joey feel? Surrounded by shadow magic and "chosen ones" and all this talk of reincarnation and destiny, and he thinks he's just along for the ride until wham! No bitch, you're special too! That's gotta warm his heart and make him smile, even after bad days working shitty jobs, or getting second place at a tournament. He's a legendary knight, his soul is tied to the Spirit World just as strongly as Yugi and Kaiba. He'll never lose his confidence ever again as long as he remembers that.

Also, I love the idea of him having all daughters. He's going to spoil them and be so crazy protective of them. He will never let them think they're anything less than gorgeous. He will sit down to tea parties with the frilly princessy one and give fighting tips to the butch one and adore all of them and very publicly threaten their partners with bodily harm if you ever dare hurt his girls. Dad Joey makes me happy. ❤️

Sera: You read the absolute hell out of Transcend Game before DSOD came out, and actually understood what was going on. i’ve sat on these long enough and so we have some of my YGO-DM next gen chara sheets! feel free to ask about them, and there’s basic info under the cut:

Yuko (peachship kidlet):

Has a younger sister (and possibly a brother, both who are currently still being worked on!)

While she loves dueling, she also loves karaoke and dancing games; she can play multiple instruments.

She’s socially awkward and a social butterfly all in one, haha! Yuko is one of those people who’s open and friendly with those she knows, but gets really shy when placed in large crowds.

Her deck is Magician Girls, with Quintet Magician being her ace monster.

The heart-shaped pendant on her bracelet is super important to her, even though it was an anonymous gift left on her desk one holiday. There’s a lot of care that went into making it, and Yuko can appreciate the craftsmanship. It’s also seems to be a puzzle locket too, but Yuko hasn’t figured out how to solve it without potentially breaking it; when she’s stressed, she can be seen tinkering with it.

Risa (polarship kidlet):

Currently an only child, but very much the Mom friend.

She’s very outgoing and confident, a perfect blend of her parents! That includes her temper too xD

She has known how to drive a stick shift since she was twelve, and she’s known how to throw a punch for even longer. Risa isn’t afraid to get into a fight if it’s to protect family and her friends.

When it comes to appearance, Risa is a girl who can do both. She’s your go to for makeup tips, but she’s also fond of ratty sneakers and casual clothes.

She uses a Red Eyes/Amazoness based deck, with her trademark monster being Red Eyes Slash Dragon.

She has been dating Tadashi since middle school and they have a surprisingly healthy (if not absolutely secret) relationship. In their friend group, there’s only one other person who knows they’re dating.

Tadashi (lol idk yet):

He’s an adopted kiddo, but no less loved! He challenged Kaiba to a chess match when Kaiba was visiting a KaibaCorp sponsored orphanage. Tadashi didn’t win, but Kaiba still adopted him anyways: “You could always stand to improve, and you obviously can’t do that here.”

Tadashi will NOPE out of any situation involving bugs. He can appreciate their function and their beauty, but he doesn’t like them at all and will quite literally speedwalk out of a room to get away from them.

Tadashi uses a deck that’s Blue Eyes themed, but he doesn’t have the actual Blue Eyes in his deck; his trademark monster is a version of what will one day become known as Azure Eyes Silver Dragon.

He’s fond of watching really bad sci-fi movies, but only with friends so that he can poke fun at them and laugh; he can’t watch them by himself without cringing.

He and Risa have their act down to a science and bicker quite a bit in public, but in private they’re actually super chill and can spend hours in each other’s company.

Rowen (fortuitship kidlet):

Has a younger sister, and possibly an adopted brother....but shhhh no spoilers yet.

Since his mom is friends with Mai (to Raphael’s dismay), Rowen practically grew up alongside Risa and Yuko. This is also how Rowen knows Risa is dating Tadashi, though he wishes he didn’t because Risa for the final time you don’t have to threaten me with forgotten secrets of my past, I won’t tell anyone.

Rowen’s archtype in Duel Monsters is Guardians, largely in part because of his father. He does in fact use copies of his father’s guardians in his deck (though not the actual cards themselves - those are too important to his father).

Rowen loves to craft and dabbles in everything from sewing to mechanic work to metal working; the necklace he wears has his immediate family’s initials on it, and he did that himself and maybe that’s a hint for something i mentioned earlier ha.

He’s very chill and personable, but if he has to he can be Serious and holds a Quiet Authority in times of crisis. Thankfully, there’s not that many instances we have to see Serious!Rowen.

So...I might as well post all my Yu-Gi-Oh! OTPs. Not to mention it's to hopefully clear up like who I ship with who. I have had people think that just because Atem and Bast are together, that must mean Yugi and Catzi will be too. And let me just say, no. That's not the case. While Yugi and Catzi are the renicarnation of Atem and Bast, it doesn't mean they will end up together again. Yugi and Catzi are just good friends.

DestinyLoveshipping (Pharaoh Atem/Queen Bast) – This kinda speaks for itself. I always felt Atem deserved to have a good strong Queen by his side. (Not to mention I never shipped him with Tea…or Yugi for that matter. Seriously…why do people love Puzzle shipping so much? -_-; ) So, when making Bast, I tried to picture of what would be the girl he would fall for. And thus, Bast was born. She’s mature, quiet, strong-willed, and kind. She is also not afraid when facing off anyone she duels. Like her husband, she shows no mercy. I do feel like Atem would love her strong good heart. Her being beautiful is just a plus. Their relationship seriously makes me smile because omg the angst and feels. Ah! I love these two so much. CX

 

Loneshipping (Marik Ishtar/Catzi Kaioh) – I’m going to say this, over the years of me coming back to YGO every now and then, I feel like Catzi has gone through a few guys. First time I made her; she was with Yugi. Second time, with Ryou. And now coming back a third time, I loved Marik so much that I loved the idea of him and Catzi being together. I mean, I already did kinda ship them back then too. The thought of Marik falling for Catzi due to her feisty ways as well as the fact she is willing to forgive him despite what he did. This relationship just makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. CX

 

Guardianshipping (Yugi Muto/Carrie Francess) – I have said it before but, this ship was kinda a crack ship. And this was before I decided to make Carrie a flexible character. Yup, she was still a DP character when I thought of this ship. But now, she is no longer tied to DP and now I am free to have her be any character I see fit. This relationship between the two has developed and thanks to my friend, she got me to love them very much. Just picturing Yugi being such a sweet boyfriend to Carrie just makes me heart melt.

 

Drawnshipping (Joey Wheeler/Yuki Fumiya) – As I have mentioned before, I am not the biggest fan of other people’s OCs. If they are well written and great characters, I am willing to make an exception. Luckily, someone I became friends with who helped me love ships like Guardianshipping created her own characters and she made some really good ones. Yuki is a nice character and I do like her relationship with Joey. Plus, it’s hilarious that she has a crush on him and he’s downright freaking clueless about it. XD Ah, Joey, I love you but man you are dense. I also like this pair way more than Polarshipping. I have never cared for Joey/Mai especially with their age gap.

 

Blissfulshipping (Ryou Bakura/Chrissy Major) – I don’t do a lot of self inserts. XD I have only done it once before and that was with SWAT Kats. But the fact I had loved Marik/Catzi, I felt so bad for Ryou. The poor boy is forgotten so much, I feel he deserves some love and attention. And by goodness, Chrissy would be sure to give him that love and attention. But she is respectful of his boundaries too due to his fangirls never leaving him alone.

 

Warmshipping (Chase Fumiya/Tea Gardner) Again, like with Yuki, Chase is an interesting character. Plus, the fact Tea being the only one to stand up to him besides his sister Yuki would make him start to crush on her. I like to think Tea would come to care for Chase and wishing to change him for the better. Not to mention, I never really shipped Tea with anyone (except with Kaiba honestly) like I certainly never liked her being with Yugi or Atem for that matter. With Chase, I can see this working out. ^-^ Not to mention she would keep him from getting in trouble.

 

Raidershipping (Thief King Bakura/Carmen Sandiego) – When I saw the Netflix’s Carmen Sandiego, I really loved the concept of it as well as Carmen herself. She is downright gorgeous, and I couldn’t help but like the idea of her being with Bakura. Her calm sassiness would go great with his sarcastic ego. Plus, she would probably be the only one to put up with him. XD I can picture the two going on missions and using their thieving skills to keep artifacts safe. Also, this would be after he has been redeemed.

 

Sideshipping (Tristan Taylor/Miho Nosaka) – Let me just say this…I don’t really care for Miho. So why is she in this? Because this Miho is different to what we saw in the season 0 anime. I never liked the fact she is just some gold-digging dense girl. She never seemed like the type to even hang out with Yugi and the others. I know they wanted to have it so that Tea is not the only girl, but seriously. There were barely any good things about her. So, for this, Miho is more like her manga self. She’s shy but caring and quiet. I feel like, if she wasn’t embarrassed by that mean teacher, I think Tristan would have had a shot with her. Plus, I don’t ship Tristan with Serenity. Why? The duel he, Serenity, and Duke had in the Noah’s Ark. Duke didn’t baby Serenity while Tristan did. He acted like she couldn’t do a thing for herself. True it was her first duel, but she could learn and I’m sure Duke could trust her to do that. Tristan didn’t and I feel like their relationship just wouldn’t last even if Joey were to let it happen. Plus, Serenity seems to like Tristan as another brother anyway. Like I said, I know Tristan can have a girl, and I rather be it Miho.

The Seven Labors of Mokuba Kaiba

Well, the cat’s out of the bag, and this year’s Yu-Gi-Oh! Mini-Exchange fics have finally been revealed!

The NaNoWriMo story I alluded to finishing the other day is The Seven Labors of Mokuba Kaiba, written for brightbriar, and you can read it on Archive of Our Own here:

Summary: Mokuba Kaiba wants to get the perfect present for his brother Seto's upcoming 30th birthday in less than a month. The only problem is, to get what he wants, he'll need to wheel and deal his way across two continents, negotiate with old friends, and face his fears of some old foes. Can he do it, or will he be stuck playing second fiddle to Seto Kaiba for the rest of his life?

Warnings: Mostly gen, but has some background relationships, including light Polarshipping and Ardentshipping, and one-sided Boxshipping, Peachshipping, and Revolutionshipping. Post-canon anime-verse, with characters aged up, if it wasn’t obvious from the summary above.

15/15 chapters (COMPLETE!), approximately 60,450 words.

ETA: @kaibacorpintern​ inspired this fic with a thread talking about Kaiba Corp. holiday parties, which devolved into me loving the idea of Anzu somehow working for Kaiba Corporation and being at said holiday party, only to challenge Kaiba to a DDR dance-off, because he was (perhaps drunkenly) accepting anyone who dared to challenge him to any game.

But then I got to wondering: why would she be working for Kaiba Corporation and why wouldn’t he know? Why would Seto be averse to the concept of ‘schmoozing’ and its benefits? Why would Mokuba keep insisting Seto show up at these company holiday parties, and he’d only FINALLY show up and have a good time when it’s at an arcade?

All of these questions led me to this “prologue” story to my forthcoming Love and the Art of Schmoozing. But seeing as 7L (as I’ve been abbreviating it) is 15 chapters, it can also stand on its own. Not sure when I’ll get to LATAOS, but I will, one of these days. @kaibacorpintern, I hope you like the fic, even if it’s not quite the one I mentioned getting inspired to write... yet!

Favorite character: It’s honestly  really hard for me to say. Yugioh came around at a time where things weren’t that great and so I clung pretty much to every character for different reasons. It’s usually a tie between Atem, Yugi, Joey, and Seto.

I feel like saying Seto wins rn tho.

Least Favorite character: Dartz.

Literally the only character I will never consider redeemable like..ever. I still remember watching him laugh about how he set the DOMA kids up to become what they became and literally I’ve never hated a character more than sitting in that couch and watching that episode.

5 Favorite ships (canon or non-canon):

ummm I guess Polarshipping bc it was There, Powershipping, Mumbleshipping, Rivalshipping, and Silentshipping since my friends write them a lot. I’m not a very shippy person. If I see people write stuff especially if we’re friends, and the characters are happy together and its cute, I’ll prolly end up likin it.

I also lke  Rivershipping which is Mokuba with Connor Brikley from @iced-blood‘s fic Paved With Good Intentions.

Character I find most attractive: i..huh...I dont know lol.

Character I would marry: i mean i wouldn't marry anyone unless i had to..so if i had to prolly seto or Yugi. Seto bc he’d have enough money to get lawyers to unmarry us whenever we want and his house is way big, or Yugi bc if you Gotta live with someone he’s...honestly the nicest person there. Also he’s the only one with a nice parent that like..shows up in canon.

Character I would be good friends with: Tie between Joey and Mokuba.

a random thought: Atem snarks at Yugi from inside the puzzle so much like you do not understand. It drives him up the wall lol.

An unpopular opinion: I don’t know whats popular or unpopular bc I’m terrified of diskhorse and hide under ten blankets at the first hint of it. Im sure i have a few tho. I guess how much I identified/identify with Seto and believing he’s not that different from Yugitachi if it wasn’t for...yknow Everything that happened to him  and that he’s actually a good  person counts as one? I haven’t met people who disagree with me but I know people who haven't been as lucky. 

I think most characters ( sans like..Dartz and Gozaburo) can be redeemed. I think we’re shown the path that led even the villains (i.e. Marik, Bakura, Noah)  to where they are as a way to understand them. I tend to have a lot of  empathy for almost everyone with a Tragic Backstory. Even if I don’t agree with their actions. Or am rolling my eyes at the tv a few minutes later when they Do Things.  

Im not sure how unpopular this is so much as I remember catching some flack back in the day for liking ( or even not hating) the characters mentioned above.

My Canon OTP: I guess Polar Shipping?

My Non-canon OTP: I don’t think I have one.

Most Badass Character: In My Opinion? Mai Valentine.

Most Epic Villain: Again, imo. Marik. He literally had Yugi dissapearing bit by bit in a duel like that sh-t was terrifying.

Pairing I am not a fan of: I get squicked by large age gaps for personal reasons but im pretty Ship and Let Ship overall.

Character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): hnnnnggg. There’s a lot. I feel like Ryou and Noah are up there for me. One gets so little screen time i know like..three things about him, and the other literally dies confronting and killing his neglectful abusive father. ( i generally dislike death= redemption ) 

Favourite Friendship: 

Atem and Yugi. Hands down. I’m a sucker for like..platonic puzzleshipping I guess you’d call it. I love their bond and how they help each other through their respective journeys.

Character I most identify with:  

A Lot Of Them. It used to be Seto won that place but I think now that I’m healing more it’s maybe Yugi.

Character I wish I could be: 

Mokuba Kaiba. He’s got the best big brother.

I’m eternally late to the game since Valentine’s Day was a week and a half ago, but I saw this ask meme, and I couldn’t help myself. Since I never get asks, I’ve decided that I’m going to treat it like a meme on its own. Taken from courierhawk’s reblog; original questions from thevirdirthara. Also, apologies in advance. Your favorite non-canon ship?

Considering there’s only one, maybe two ACTUAL canon ships, just about any of my ships are valid, though there are slightly more canon ships if you look at the anime instead of the manga. That being said, Polar (MaiXJoey) is probably my favorite non-canon ship. I know, I know, age difference and it’s not present in the manga and blah blah blah, but I don’t care. I love Polar to death.

Is there a ship you didn’t like at first but ultimately started shipping?

Thorn (AnzuXYamiMarik) is a ship I never would’ve considered ever because I don’t ship Yami Marik with anyone, but one fic on fanfiction.net caught my attention, and my secret love for Thorn was born. Honestly, though, it has to be extremely specific circumstances for me to ship this—pretty much only if Yami Marik is human.

What is the rarest rare pair (that you ship)?

Probably Timid (SerenityXYugi). I’m not certain I’ve ever seen content for this ship anywhere. I’m surprised I even know its name. But if I think about it too long, it becomes super cute. A close tie might be Soft (SerenityXRyou) because it is also quite cute. I like cute things.

Name a popular ship you don’t get the appeal of.

Death (YamiMarikXRyou) and Puppy (SetoXJoey). As I said before, I can’t pair Yami Marik with anyone (except Anzu under special human circumstances), and even if I did, Ryou would be one of the last people I’d choose. Under certain circumstances, like years later when they’re both adults, I can maybe see Seto and Joey EVENTUALLY getting along, but as far as I’m concerned, Puppy is not a ship that would ever work. Just, no.

What is your most fluffy + happy ship?

With the power of fanfic, I can make any ship fluffy and happy. As far as pure canon is concerned, I don’t think one exists. So, with the power of my fanfic abilities, I declare that the fluffiest and happiest ship I have is Sibling (SerenityXMokuba). There might be a little angst in this relationship just because their brothers don’t get along, BUT! These two are precious fluffy babies.

What is your most angsty ship?

With the power of fanfic, I can make any ship angsty XD AUs are a particular specialty of mine in this case. Combining both canon with possible AUs, I’d have to say Manipula (AnzuXMarik) just because, canonically, there’s a lot of potential bad blood between them because of what Marik did to her and Joey and Yugi, and Marik’s not exactly a goody-two-shoes either.

A non-canon ship that should be canon?

Sibling because I consider Peach (AnzuXYugi) almost canon, and Sibling is almost the next best thing. I mean, I do ship her with Duke and Tristan, both of which are kinda canon if you look at the manga and anime respectively, but I love Sibling too much to ignore it in this question.

Your oldest ship; the one you’ve shipped for the longest time?

Peach was my first OTP in the YuGiOh franchise, and I still ship it to this day.

What ship represents the kind of relationship you’d love to have?

Peach again. I think the most important part of a romantic relationship is friendship. If you’re not besties with your significant other, then I don’t believe the relationship will work out as well. I want to be able to be myself around my significant other, and I want to be understood by them. I feel like Peach embodies this well.

Is there a ship that makes your skin crawl?

I have never been nor will ever be super comfortable with yaoi and yuri ships, but they’re not so bad as to make my skin crawl, but incest will forever make me sick, and so will pedophilia. NO THANK YOU.

What is a character you can only imagine in one particular ship?

Surprise, surprise, it’s Joey. Blame it on the lack of female characters available in YuGiOh, but I have only ever shipped him with Mai. The only way Joey gets any love in my writing/headcanons is if there are OCs involved, assuming he’s not already paired with Mai.

What is your favorite canon ship?

Rose (CeceliaXPegasus). I’m super sad that it ended so badly in canon because they are adorable, and one of my ultimate favorite YGO pairing fanarts is for this ship.

Name a ship that deserved more content.

Peach if only because I want to see them actually get together. I think that because friendship is a super focus of YuGiOh as a whole, we got a lot less romantic content than we otherwise might have liked, but that’s okay with me. That’s why fanfiction/fanart exists XD

Is there a ship you feel gets undeserved hate in fandom?

Depends on what corner of the fandom you’re in. I personally hate it when people hate on Anzu, no matter the ship she might be in, especially when they hate on her in favor of their yaoi pairings. That’s super unfair to Anzu as a character since she’s awesome and one of my favorite female characters of all time.

What is the first ship you had?

I already mentioned this in the oldest ship question, but I’ll say it again—Peach.

Is there a ship that made you realize something about yourself?

I don’t know if I can cite a specific ship, but shipping in YuGiOh is what made me realize that I like character/ship potential almost more than I like ships themselves, hence why I multiship. Because of this realization and multishipping in YuGiOh, I’ve been able to extend that to other fandoms, especially Harry Potter.

Is there a type of ship you always go for?

Depends on the situation. I’m a sucker for strong female characters who could be paired with lots of guys because I’m such a multishipper, and I love cute fluffy pairings. I do like ships with interesting conflict, but the fluffy ones always get me.

Is there a ship the writers have ruined for you?

Not that I can think of. I mean, almost no ships are canon in YuGiOh, so rather than “ruining” ships, it’s mostly just unknown for the various potential ships.

Is there a ship the fandom has ruined for you?

Not really. I already had my reasons for not shipping certain ships, and I’ve never been turned away from a ship I already shipped. I will say, though, that I wish people would tag their freakin’ ships so that I don’t have to see stuff on my dash that I don’t ship.

Have you ever created fan created content for a ship?

Yes. I’ve never drawn any of my YuGiOh ships, but I have written a couple oneshots for Peach and one for Polar. I’ve also referenced/included the following ships in stories focused on OC ships: Peach, Polar, Ardent (SerenityXTristan), Kiddy (RebeccaXMokuba), Half (MihoXRyou), Tie (MihoXTristan), Azure (AnzuXSeto), and Sedate (SerenityXMarik).

Favorite thing you’ve ever created for a ship?

Do children count? Or grandchildren? My YuGiOh OC story has an entire second and third generation to follow. I have children/grandchildren for the following ships: Peach, Polar, Ardent, Kiddy, and Half.

Is there a ship you’ll never admit you have?

No. I’m not ashamed of my ships. I admit that I don’t talk about some of them as much, but that doesn’t mean I don’t ship them or that I’m afraid to admit it.

Have you ever started shipping a ship because of the fans?

Yes. It wasn’t until fandom hit really hard in recent years that Sibling joined my roster of ships.

What is one scene you want to see happen for all your ships?

A proposal. Is that cliché? I don’t care XD

Is there a ship you wish you didn’t know existed? 

Any incest ships. I don’t know why they exist or if there are people who ship them, but I wish they’d never been conceived (the ships, not the people).

Name a ship that ended like you wanted it to.

Considering both canon ships ended in death, I’m gonna say none of them. All my ships end nicely in my head.

Name a ship that deserved better in the end.

Rose and Mizu (KisaraXSeth). Both of these ships ended in tragedy, and it makes me so sad. I NEED THEM TO BE HAPPY.

Is there a character you have several ships for?

Oh yes. Many of them. I’m a multishipper XD I have Anzu in the most ships. My Anzu ships are Azure, Host (AnzuXRyou), Manipula, Peach, Persevere (AnzuXDuke), Thorn, and Vex (AnzuXYamiBakura).

What is the ship you ignore 98% of canon for?

I don’t ignore canon, I bend canon *coughAUISMYFRIENDcough* Okay, okay, maybe my two Miho pairings, Half and Tie. Not much info is given in the manga except that Tristan/Honda has a crush on her and that she’s kinda shy, and she doesn’t exist in DM. I ignore season 0 super hardcore when it comes to Miho. To be perfectly honest, she almost feels more like an OC most days.

Is there a ship you like but you dislike the fandom?

Not really. It’s usually the other way around ’cause I love my YuGiOh friends, but most of them ship stuff I don’t.

1. Mizu/blueshipping

This is very self explanatory BUT their love is a love that spanned over 3,000 years and yet.. So little had changed since then. I like to think that Kisara still sees bits and pieces of Seth in Kaiba and it pleasantly surprises her. It's fascinating. They are fascinating. A true love story.

2. Puzzleshipping

Oh 4kids, how much you butchered out for these two. They are inseparable and the whole relationship is founded on respect and care. This is pure and ideal. 

3. Roseshipping 

Because I too would do anything for the one I love. He is NOT a villain and I'll fight anyone who says otherwise. I feel this one personally; more than I'd like to admit and their love is just so powerful. Cecilia was literally Pegasus's MUSE, guys. To lose a huge part of yourself and someone so important like that.. So suddenly.. As an artist myself? Truly devastating. I understand and felt his inner turmoil completely. That's why Roseshipping gets 3rd.

4. Polarshipping

It was pretty obvious how they liked each other and all he had to do was kiss her before she drove off. Official art hints that they are still together thankfully. He's a real one.

5. Wishshipping

Best. Friends. This is adorable and while I love the concept of it, Puzzleshipping does come first.

Honestly, this one is more of an inside joke and sentimental to me for reasons more than anything else. Their "chemistry" isn't typically considered healthy but hey, again.. Inside jokes and sentiments. 

Valorshipping

Similar to Joey he also made his emotions clear for Mai. I would almost say he's better for Mai except.. He isn't. Joey balances her out while Valon is overpowering and in overdrive with his emotions if that makes sense. Overwhelming, Mai does like her space after all. Joey could understand that right away. Sidenote: It was interesting how Valon was the one that ended up with her card and not Joey..

 Prideshipping

Kaiba's ego and him going out of his way for one person is not only admirable but understandable even when the odds are against him.

Rivalshipping 

Less loved for me than Prideshipping but you can't have Prideshipping without a smidge of Rivalshipping somewhere first.
