Question for the podficcers: do any of you record/edit on mobile? If so, what do you use? Looking mostly for android advice, but if you have an i-something, feel free to chime in as well.

Hello!! Thanks for tagging me in @forabeatofadrum and @orange-peony! Love seeing what you're working on.
My wife and I are !surprise! buying a new house in three weeks (we've been trying to buy a new house for over three years, but the market is wild and we've been in various kinds of limbo for various lengths of time, and this one wasn't supposed to end this quickly or at this time, but here we are.) Anyway, uh, who knows if I'll be able to fulfill all my October fandom goals with an early-November closing on the horizon, but maybe!
Snippet from Feet Buried in the Sand (formerly Beach Boys), ie my @leithillustration @carryon-reverse-bang fic, redacted for spoilerization. Longer than six sentences because limits are arbitrary.
"Can you swim?" Snow asks, flopping wetly down next to me. **Redacted**. He's been splashing about for a while, and his skin is pebbled with goose-pimples. He drapes himself against my side and presses an open-mouthed kiss to my chest over my heart.  "Get off, you heathen!" I laugh, shoving at him. He's soaking my shirt, an aqua linen tee studded with rosebuds.  He rolls entirely on top of me instead and shakes his head so that his hair rains salty droplets onto my sunglasses and over my face. My tongue dips out to slate my thirst on the water. I know that salt water won't help, but it's crisp and cool against my lips and when Snow pulls back, he looks down at my panting mouth and dives in.  His lips are cool, but his tongue is warm. I can't get enough of his mouth, his bacon-cookie smell, the way he's licking into me. I strain up into him **redacted**.
Progress on my podfics is going well, except... see below. I'm at the white-gray vertical line in editing this fic for content. The bottom THREE TRACKS are all cut sections. It's at minimum 80% of the audio I recorded. All the yellow in the first section is bringing the levels of my breaths down. Cue manic face.
Tumblr media
An outtake, you'll see why I called it this.
I will continue to keep the fics a secret today except to say that they're by the inimitable @mostlymaudlin and that I've been contemplating whether I should use the "telephone vocal" setting in garageband. ;-) Feel free to make a guess.

and, we're live!
Tumblr media
Time for my 2023 stats round up.
First, let's look at the number of hours/minutes per month, shall we?
Tumblr media
All of that account for 59 hours & 11 minutes of podfic. Now, comparing to last year, when I had just shy of 31 hours, that looks pretty good. Remember, last year I started in August so I almost doubled it.
We do notice a dip in March & April, which tend to be busy months in the education world. The spike in May is due to Voiceteam. June-August are a bit odd - you'd think a teacher on break would have more time to create. But I had some life stuff hit and it really destroyed my brain.
So, here's my first 2024 Resolution:
Remember how happy podfic makes you & don't let your depression win.
Now, moving on to the breakdowns and fun stuff, shall we?
Tumblr media
Here are my top 5 fandoms, authors, ratings, and genres! I also have them in bar chart form and pie chart form, which I'll put below the cut. You'll see a slight difference in the author category -- I didn't include myself or Flowerparrish and my podcast in that as those weren't authors.
Of course, what is podficcing without making covers you love? Here are my favorite covers I made for my own podfics! I have a migraine so please excuse the fact that the images don't line up, vision is blurry:
Tumblr media
Now, let's move on to my stats image from above. I used the same format as last year but since I made over 100 more podfic than last year, each microphone now equals five podfics.
As you can see, I participated in a lot of events! I believe I made the most audio for Voiceteam 2022 (as evidenced by my hours/month graph). This was my first year doing Voiceteam and I had a blast. I also got to do Podtogether & Summer Swap for the first time. It was my 2nd year doing ITPE. And then so much more.
My top kudosed collaborative project was "A Fair Compromise" with @wanderingjedihistorian for 212th Appreciation week. My top kudosed solo project was "A Game of Guess Who With Big Blue" by TheWitchBoy. The longest podfic I made was also with @wanderingjedihistorian and was my podfic of our Codywan Big Bang project! My shortest was a Locked Tomb podfic at 57 seconds called Realization.
My first podfic of 2023 was Hot Cocoa by Melime, a "The Batman" podfic. In the middle was Dissipate by SunsetsOverLA for Waxer*Boil month. And the last posted thing was for @fandomtrumpshate, for my top bidder - an Obi-Wan/Jango soulmates AU.
Now, on to 2024! My resolutions are:
To continue working on current WIPs I'm bringing into 2024 - some of which I've already tied up only 5 days into the year
To podfic even when my brain is being a gremlin, because podfic makes me happy and I should be able to focus on that!
To be brave enough to post the first "Soft Wars" podfic and finally tackle the series (kind of the same as resolution #1)
Not to sign up for Big Bangs -- I love them dearly but they actually caused a lot of my burnout this year and I didn't love that. As much as I love collabs, I think I'll stick to Podtogether, multivoices with friends, and gift exchanges this year!
Close the gaps -- aka, as much as I love Clone Wars, I want to focus on all things I love, instead of overbearingly focusing in on one.
Going into 2024, I am going to start tracking what music I use in my podfics, because I was curious about it / @flowerparrish inspired me. I also found a way to track overall Star Wars and then Star Wars broken down into sub fandoms - that should neaten up my "top 5" category a bit.
Happy New Year, all!
And, as mentioned above, screenshots of my actual graphs & tables, for interest sake!

IT'S DONE!!! Complete Podfic of Windows now available to stream or download!
This epic is nearly 10 hours long and took me over a year to complete (sorry about that, btw!). It's been a journey and a learning experience and a lot of fun!
Huge thanks to @drgrlfriend for letting me record her amazing story and for cheering me on!

For some practical reasons, but mostly because I am a cataloguer at heart and it feels like such a distinct experience (as a reader and as a listener), I really want a discrete name for regularly-updated cold reads with chatter.
It has podcast vibes in the sense of having regularly recorded and immediately released programming available to listeners, but I couldn't come up with a good portmanteau that felt fun.
This morning's brainstorm came up with "serial podfic" (or "serialized podfic"?) but I would love to hear if anyone has other ideas!

at 90 minutes of audio and i'm only 2/3 of the way through the text of this fic
genuinely no idea how i'm going to cut this thing together on my frankenbook (10+ year old macbook my brother stole from the dump and work and turned into a chromebook for me) because i haven't figured out how to install editing software so i'm using audiomass online which works but my loading times are very slow

Hey Podficcers, just want to warn you about a site. https://audiofic.jinjurly.com/ is a podfic archive which seems well and good, but someone posted one of my podfic there without my permission, which is against their terms. Anyway, might want to have a quick check to see if any of yours have been posted there without your knowledge. The person who did it actually commented with a link on my AO3 podfic page which is how I found out. I have requested the site owners remove it as I did not want my podfic posted elsewhere. We shall see what happens. Will report back with any responses (or lack thereof) I receive.
Also, in case this isn’t clear DO NOT DO THIS. If a fan work, any fan work, is not on a platform or site you want it to be on DO NOT TAKE IT ON YOURSELF TO PUT IT THERE. Contact the creator and ask if they will put it there themselves, or if they mind you cross posting. And if they say no to cross posting THEN YOU FUCKING RESPECT THAT. You do not get to take a fan work out of the creator’s control just because you want to. It is the height of rudeness and I promise you the creator will be extremely upset when they find out. It is theft, and it is absolutely not ok. Don’t do it.

Recording a TTS version of a fic is not podficcing.
Posting a TTS version of a fic does not make you a podficcer.
It’s not even close. The mere idea is disingenuous at best and insulting at worst. No shade if you prefer an AI voice or if you use TTS for any reason, but it’s absolutely infuriating that there are people who think pressing a button and letting an AI record a fic for you is in any way comparable to the work that goes into an actual podfic.
Podficcing is already the most thankless medium in fandom. You’re lucky to get a couple dozen kudos and a handful of comments on Ao3. Some podficcers in some fandoms get nothing.
Podficcers give you pieces of themselves. They give you their voice. They give you their interpretations and spins on characters and stories. They inject emotion and help breathe life into what they record.
It can take HOURS to get a good single hour of recorded audio. It can take a good 4-8 hours to EDIT an hour of recorded audio depending on your speed and how much work it needs.
And that’s at a very basic level. It doesn’t include effects. It doesn’t include if you have to re-record various portions and correct what you’ve already recorded. It doesn’t include the cover art if you make it. It doesn’t include adding music and stitching everything together.
I’ve spent upwards of 150 hours on a podfic before, and the idea that someone could record the same fic in twelve with the push of a button and no real effort on their part, upload it, call themselves a podficcer, and expect the same level of appreciation fills me with a rage so deep and visceral that it makes me ill. Especially considering how little appreciation we already GET.
It devalues what we do. People already have no idea the effort that goes into podficcing. The idea that it’s as simple as pressing record on your computer while a TTS function reads a fic is absolutely maddening, and by acting as though it’s the same thing, you’re saying that it is that simple.
If authors are happy with TTS recordings of their work being posted, I get that. It can be great for a variety of reasons - especially if there’s no available podfic.
But there shouldn’t even be a precedent for referring to those as podfics because that’s not what they are. Imagine being an author and being offered a podfic, and someone just posts a TTS recording of your fic.
That’s not what you were expecting. Anyone can plug a fic into a TTS reader.
And seeing people do that and act as though they’ve created something that compares to what an actual podficcer creates - in terms of time, effort, creativity, and fucking soul - makes me want to smash something.

Hi! I enjoyed your podfics! May I ask, what is VoiceTeam? And what did you use to make your recordings and to do the editing? The way that the files are embedded in AO3 is really clean and nice too. I'm so impressed and curious!
Hoooooo lordy! If this isn't basically my favorite kind of ask! First off, thank you so much for complimenting my podfics! I love podficcing, listening to podfics, and the podficcing community so much and psst, we would love have you.
Question 1: Voiceteam is an annual audio fanwork challenge that is housed on Dreamwidth and Discord wherea a bunch of podficcers, aspiring podficcers, and their friends are broken up into teams by an incredible mod team to compete for points. The challenges include things like, "Make an audio fanwork where you alter the voice of at least one character in the editing phase" or "Listen to an audio fanwork of another Voiceteam member and make a moodboard for it." The points equal bragging rights and a personal sense of accomplisment, but we all win because yay! More podfic and other audio fanwork! Voiceteam takes place over the course of the month and included 3 one-week rounds (with 10 challenges per round) this year. There are also sometimes mini Voiceteam events at other times of the year. Question 2: I have a Yeti Nano mic right now and I record straight into the program Audacity, which I also use for editing. It is free and there are Mac and PC versions. My husband (who is a musician) is very annoyed that I use Audacity and he really wants me to start using GarageBand but like, soooo much of the podficcing community uses Audacity and they are way more available to help me with editing problems than my husband so haha. Before I had this mic, I used one of my hubby's super fancy mics. And before that, I used my phone and the tiny mic on my convenience store headphones. I say this to say YOU CAN START ANYWHERE. There are ways to make phone mics sound just fine for podficcing! Question 3: I upload my podfics into archive.org for posting. It's nice and easy to embed and to share download links! I got into podficcing primarily by being brought in slowly by friends...audio breadcrumbs if you will. And I am more than happy to bring you along too! I (we) are always looking for people to do bit parts on multivoice projects and that's a great way to get started because you don't have to do anything but record! Additionally lot of us also read this post by @the-dragongirl when we were getting ready to make our own pods for the first time (from recording to editing).
I should also say, I break a lot of best practice podficcing rules all the time and it's still okay. I've improved a lot over time, but also I listen to some of my first pods and they're still pretty great.

Chapters: 1/1 Fandom: One Piece (Anime & Manga) Rating: Explicit Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Roronoa Zoro/Sanji Characters: Roronoa Zoro, Sanji (One Piece) Additional Tags: Trans Roronoa Zoro, Oral Fixation, Cock Warming, Consensual Somnophilia, Somnophilia, Dirty Talk, Established Relationship, Bottom Roronoa Zoro, Undernegotiated Kink, Top Sanji (One Piece), Podfic & Podficced Works, Podfic, Podfic Length: 0-10 Minutes, My First Podfic, Audio Format: Streaming, Embedded Audio, Audio Format: MP3
Summary:
Blame it on his oral fixation from smoking all these years, the way having something in his mouth and hands keeps him preoccupied enough to not get too deep in his head, but Sanji learns quickly during sex with Zoro that sucking the meat of his tit into his mouth meets an unspoken need within him. Occasionally at night when he's curled into Zoro's chest he mouths at the skin absently, often leaving a mark or two before he falls asleep content.
Tonight that's not enough, even after Sanji's filled Zoro to the brim.
Podfic of the wonderful fic by BeefyLesbian that can be read here!
