People who are new to PJO are seeing the romantic tension between Percy and Annabeth and they aren't ready for the intense slow burn that will last til AT THE EARLIEST an episode or two before the Season 5 finale.
That's 105 chapters total of the first series of slowburn. That will total a little over 50 episodes of it. A fair amount more if they go more than 26 episodes per season.
And if they get the okay to make the OTHER books into series, IMAGINE HOW MUCH WORSE IT WILL BE BECAUSE YOU'LL BE SEEING THE TORMENT OF NICO AND HIS SUPER GAY ASS NEEDING TO SUPPRESS THE GAY TO NOT BE TOO GAY WITH HIS FUTURE BOYFRIEND AND PERCY AND JASON AND GAHHHHH.

what is your problem with tiktok or booktok and colleen hoover lmao its not that bad surely
the fact that it actively promotes overconsumerism, the way it sells books to you by just playing into already heavily milked out tropes with very specific character niches that are seen in every book nowadays and how the reading is just seen as something aesthetic or a part of the "it girl routine" maybe? if those are enough reasons for you?
does the fact that these books are the first things you see when you walk into a bookstore not bother you? when you ask someone for a book recommendation they'll follow it up with "its a romance slow burn enemies to lovers". it's always about the aesthetic of the book, how many lines can you take out of context and post as a compilation of your super cute romantic annotations page on instagram. no analyzing the book, no theories, no symbolism or meaningfulness at all. how people stand reading those kind of books and still feel any kind of emotions over these flat as hell books with no world or character building is genuinely baffling to me
no one seems to know about actual literature anymore, which not to sound like a boomer but i think its definitely true. there's always been trend cycles, i agree such as the harry potter craze from the 1990s to the 2000s and the dystopia hunger games/maze runner/divergent blast in the early 2010s but tiktok has just.. shortened these cycles so much. as a result, people like our darling colleen hoover whose written around 46 books since 2015 (according to google) try come up with as much fresh content as they can as quickly as possible for the readers (see overconsumption). the fact that this lady outsold the bible is not outstanding to me, its fucking concerning.
and after all that, the result is badly written books with characters who're about as dimensional as a piece of paper, overuse of tropes, read like they've been written by a toddler, toxic-ass relationships being romanticised, very unnecessary sex scenes and countless other things. seriously if i wanted to read about the kind of stories hoover tells i would just open a wattpad account.
this isn't to say that all booktok books are terrible. i'm trying to highlight some of the flaws i find in authors like colleen hoover, emily henry, taylor jenkins reid, ali hazelwood, sarah j maas and elena armas. some of their works are quite decent :) six of crows, thsoeh, tsoa, circe, daisy jones, where the crawdads sing etc are some books which i think everyone has heard of if theyre active online which were actually nice reads. also i am BEGGING u to reach out of your comfort zone and read something different like non-fiction or fantasy or one of the classics for once if you only read booktok like seriously it might be hard but just do it for the love of god!!

Jason and Nico being able to unmask around one another for pretty much the first time ever is one of my favorite things about them. Like no matter if their relationship is romantic or platonic or if they're even just acquaintances, I feel like there's always this prevailing sense that the two of them get each other better than most people get them. They also both suffer the same "curse" of identity - they want people to see them for who they are, but people tend to only see them for who their parent is. They hear Jason Grace and think son of Jupiter before they think anything else. They hear Nico di Angelo and they think child of Hades before any other thought comes to mind. These two are the only people for each other (that they know of so far, anyways) who hear their names and think friend, or dork, or nerd about temples first.
Sure, I understand that they didn't always start out that way. Jason in canon had a LOT of issues to work through when he was on the Argo - he had his memories wiped, he was in a relationship with a girl he wasn't sure he really remembered, he was being told to be a leader even though Percy also wanted to be a leader, and so he treated Nico the way he did because it was what everyone else expected of him. But then he saw Nico open up, or more he saw Nico be forced to open up, and he realized that he didn't have to obey what everyone else thought anymore. He saw this guy who was struggling, who was hurt and hated and he saw himself in that guy, and he wanted to help.
I just think Jason and Nico's relationship is so fucking awesome. The one that they tend to have in fanon, anyways, I haven't reread HoO recently enough to form an opinion about their canon relationship. I think it's fucking awesome that we have these two characters that, to us, bond so well.

currently writing an AU where Chiron convinces Sally to take Nico home after the summer camp session is done because despite all they've tried, Nico isn't getting better mentally and it's clear that the atmosphere around camp is inhibiting him (kids still treating him like shit, his own feelings of inadequacy regarding his parentage, the way it reminds him of waiting for Bianca and Percy to come back only to learn Bianca would never come back, etc.)
So Sally Jackson takes Nico home with her and Percy, and Percy is PISSED. Like beyond angry, will not talk to Nico and is a total dick to him most of the time because he's a 17 year old boy who's finally going to see his mama again and NOW HE'S GOT THIS SHITTY LITTLE FUCKING SIDEKICK who he's still not TOTALLY convinced isn't in love with his girlfriend despite Nico literally coming out to him. In this AU Percy is definitely still dealing with a lot of his own trauma and none of it in a super healthy manner - hence, he hates Nico.
At least, that's how it was supposed to go. Now Percy and Nico have bonded into essentially being brothers. They wrestle in the backyard so often Sally has taken to spraying them with the garden hose when they're being too rowdy. They bicker and fight over whose turn it is to walk Mrs. O'Leary. They end up having to go to the same school (Nico kept getting kicked out of the other ones) and Percy defends Nico from people being dicks while simultaneously being a dick to him (but lovingly).
I love it when AUs get totally out of hand from what I originally wanted them to be and I elect to make this Jason Grace's fault for becoming Nico's boyfriend when I wasn't paying attention. Jason put Percy and Nico into a get-along shirt.
also Nico and Annabeth become good friends because she's around a lot and she finds him an invaluable resource on the topics that she can never wrap her head around, things that are too old to even really be in any online databases - things that Nico can access by speaking to the dead. They start off being very iffy about one another but by the end they are also Practically Siblings.

I think that Jason has a stuffed animal that one of his guardians in New Rome have to him when he was a baby. A wolf or a fox or some other dog/cat-like creature - maybe even a stuffed hellhound or something, something that he rediscovers on accident while in the 5th Cohort’s barracks, something that makes him sit down on the floor holding it in his hands and cry, for some reason, something he can’t even remember but he knows was important to him once upon a time.

2006: A fanfiction year in review!
The first year of Percy Jackson fanfiction and the launch of the archive! Let's check the numbers!
8 fics were posted in 2006, and we archived 3. This is due to certain restrictions we have on archived fanfics that are explained in our pinned post. Of what we archived, we found the following:
3,592 words in total (1,764.5 average)
3 chapters (1 average)
558 reviews (186 average)
315 favorites (105 average)
92 follows (30.67 average)

What we noticed:
With only the first two books out (The Lightning Thief and The Sea of Monsters), a lot of established plot and characterization we're used to in the present day has yet to be established. What is canon-compliant in 2006 and what we see as canon-compliant today varies greatly. Authors were still speculating about where the characters and plot would go, so they had to establish certain plots or characterization seemingly from scratch.
Young authors dominate fanfiction in 2006, as evidenced by their writing styles and online persona.
The name of the ship "Percabeth" has yet to gain popularity. Any fic containing Percabeth is labeled "percyannabeth" which surprises commentators from future years (noticeably 2014, 2017, and 2021)
Percy Jackson fanfiction as we know it today had yet to fully blossom.

i love the different ways that people say i love you without outright saying i love you. when someone says “hey i saw this and thought of you so i got it for you.” when you’re feeling sad and instead of forcing you to talk about it, they just sit next to you. when they tell you jokes to make you laugh, when they hug you just because, when they go out of their way to make something for you. i think thats pretty neat

Also, Oscar's acting at the dinner scene where he was "stood up", it was so amazing (and in the rest of the episode too but that is what really stood out the most for me). How distressed, confused and lack of control that he felt was so real. I felt so bad for Steven, everything around him is shattering and he doesn't understand why, he just wants a normal life and to have hope for things to get better. Anyways, I just love him so much and feel so much for him, I wanted to hug him so bad and to never leave his side 😭😭😭😭
