Pythia (n.)
"priestess of Apollo at Delphi," who received his oracles in the inner sanctuary of the great temple, 1842, from Greek pythia (hiereia) "(Priestess) of Pythian Apollo," from a variant form of Pythios, an epithet of Apollo, from Pytho, older name of the region of Delphi.
python (n.)
1580s, name of a fabled serpent, slain by Apollo near Delphi, from Latin Python, from Greek Pythōn "serpent slain by Apollo," probably related to Pythō, the old name of Delphi. Chaucer has it (late 14c.) as Phitoun.
This might be related to pythein "to rot," or from PIE *dhubh-(o)n-, from *dheub- "hollow, deep, bottom, depths," and used in reference to the monsters who inhabit them. Loosely used for "any very large snake," hence the zoological application to large non-venomous snakes of the tropics (1836, originally in French).

Apollo, the patriarchal Sun God of classic Greece, was a mythological latecomer to the oracular shrine at Delphi, though now he is always associated with it. Apollo began as an underground oracular hero, in fact, and his name means "apple-man." In classic myth, he could not rule at Delphi until he had slain the sacred python with his arrows (or phallic sunbeams), as Zeus had also killed the dragon-offspring of the Earth Goddess, at Dodona. But even after the slaying of the symbolic python, the prophetic Sibyl at "Apollo's Delphi" remained a woman. Bending over her tripod, inhaling smoke and entering trance, she pronounced her judgments on past, present, and future acts of the Greeks. But Apollo, as harbinger of patriarchal/Sun God technology, increased the production-demand on the oracle beyond her endurance and human capacity, driving her mad. As John Michell has noted, the same policy of artificially inducing and mechanically increasing the earth's fertility attempting to mass-produce earth's fruits for profit rather than accepting what is given organically by Nature can be found wherever the Solar gods assumed management over the ancient shrines of the Goddess.

I took it upon myself to photoshop Laura Roslin as the Oracle of Delphi (also known as the Pythia) so you don’t have to. This goes out to the twelve colonies and the twelve lords of kobol.

Tell the king; the fair wrought house has fallen... No shelter has Apollo, nor sacred laurel leaves... The fountains are now silent; the voice is stilled... It is finished.

Spirit of Pythia
Tumblr media
In Acts 16:16–18 we read of Paul and Silas casting out a spirit of divination from a slave girl who tells fortunes at the Temple of Delphi. While most translations say that they cast out a "spirit of divination." What the Greek actually says is that cast out a "spirit of PYTHON." Intriguingly, a Temple had been built on the spot in honor of Gaea (Earth). In this Temple, was a young girl who told fortunes. According to legend, Gaea had a son named Pythia (or “Python”). Apollo killed the giant snake, Phytia (Python), and thereafter the Temple was dedicated to Apollo. Paul cast out the spirit of Pythia from the young slave girl. I wonder if this snake that Paul cast out is symbolically related to the snake in Eden. Paul and the Slave Girl in Philippi - Biblical Archaeology Society

Charlotte's Art History Tarot - Card 2 - The High Priestess

Art: Priestess of Delphi – John Collier
pull this card
the high priestess!! this is the card from the traditional tarot deck with which I identify most 💙. this card is about stillness and reflection - a retreat in which you can use your intuition to uncover secrets and be open to new knowledge. there is a spiritual element to this card, as suggested by the title "priestess," although it doesn't have to be aligned with any specific religion. I've always seen the high priestess as a figure who is open to receiving divine wisdom, or knowledge from hidden places - in tune with something just a bit supernatural, or beyond common understanding. (there's also some weird gendered stuff traditionally associated with this card but as a non-binary person I just kinda cast that to the aside lmao). for me, the Priestess of Delphi was an obvious choice for this card, since the oracle at Delphi was historically believed to receive messages from the gods and deliver prophecies to those who came to inquire about their fate. it is now believed that the place where the oracle sat may have emitted fumes (represented by the smoke/mist in the painting) that caused hallucinations. either way, the oracle at Delphi was a solitary figure who looked inside themselves to discover knowledge from uncommon sources. in this painting, the sense of stillness and calm, yet intense concentration and contemplation, along with the shadowy, obscured background perfectly captures the otherworldly power of the high priestess.
