kiwi's fic recs - volume one!
Tumblr media
Hi, friends!! It's been a few months now since I came to tumblr, and in that time, I have read a lot of fics. Like, a lot. So, I thought it was about time I compiled some of my faves into some appreciation posts in order to show all of these amazing authors some much-deserved love!!!
This volume consists of all my October reads, to maintain some semblance of timeliness (and to give myself less of a headache!). I will be creating subsequent volumes, so this functions as a kind of trial run - for now, I hope you'll find something below that you enjoy. I can pretty much guarantee that you will!
You'll find my scrambly thots listed next to the -> under each fic. For instalments of series I've read in the past month, I've linked the masterlist, so you can find all the chapters in one spot!
Please see individual fics for tags and warnings. Not every work is going to work for everyone, and that's okay! A large proportion of these fics are 18+ only. Thank you kindly xoxo

Spooky season is still here in my eyes. Spooky season is eternal. October, however, is over! I didn't read a whole lot because my Sit And Do Nothing energy was spent on my Drawtober challenge, but that's okay! I had fun! Read a few novellas! Read most of what I had planned to read! I didn't get to The Liar's Knot, but I requested the audiobook from my library so I can do more puzzles about it.
I found a fun new game called Suika which is very dangerous and a lot of fun! They changed the theme for Halloween and now all the watermelons are jack o lanterns! I also watched Detective Pikachu which was very enjoyable. It was a good month despite life lol
The Book of Koli by MR Carey DNF - this was for book club and I couldn't get into it. Stopped reading after ten days and three chapters. Might go back to it in audio form, but not a priority (book club said it was very hard to get into)
Thunderhead by Neal Shusterman ⭐⭐⭐ - it wasn't as exciting as the first one, but still worth a read. All the action was shoved into the final act and by that point I just wanted it to be over. Will still read book three!
Of Ice and Shadows by Audrey Coulthurst ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - buddy read with a friend!! Adored it!!!! The pacing was a little off for me, but otherwise! A very good book! (why would you [REDACTED] [REDACTED] that wasn't very nice)
Provenance by Ann Leckie ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - ADORED THIS! Maybe even more than the og trilogy do not @ me
The Scourge Between Stars by Ness Brown ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - a silly little fucked up story :) perfect for spooky season :) little bite sized space horror :)
The Crane Husband by Kelly Barnhill ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Weird! Fucked up! I don't know what I expected but it wasn't that!
I have yet to choose my reads for November, I'm not sure what I'm in the mood for. I still have seven books left in my Yearly Goal Stack and I'm worried I might not make it whoops. But I'll do my best!

University has been kicking my butt lately so October was a month of rereads!
Let’s all just take a moment to appreciate how pretty the 10th anniversary edition of Maggie Stiefvater’s The Scorpio Races is - it even came with a gorgeous poster and matching bookmark! This is forever one of my favourite novels and very much fits the October mood.
I especially really appreciate Finn (the younger brother of one of the main protagonists) as some autistic representation, even though it’s never named as such. Does anyone else read the character that way?

My no-five-star streak is over! I got three 5 stars this month and 2 more were 4.5 stars and I loved this month's reading. It was supposed to be a thriller month but I ended up reading a lot more romances than I thought. More than half of the books I read this month were part of series so I've now caught up on a bunch of series! Here's the wrap up:
The Neighbor Favor ⭐⭐⭐⭐
The Mill House Murders ⭐⭐
Midnight is the Darkest Hour ⭐⭐
Swimming in the Dark ⭐⭐
The Coworker ⭐⭐⭐
Murder in the Family ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Desire or Defense ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Dark Corners ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Once Upon a Broken Heart ⭐⭐⭐
The Good Lie ⭐⭐⭐⭐
King of Greed ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Glimmers of You ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Nine Liars ⭐⭐
Shadows of You ⭐⭐⭐⭐
The Woman in Me ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

What I Read in October
Target: 11
Read: 6
So I wasn’t able to reach my reading goal for the month of October but I did read some very interesting books, so it doesn’t seem like a total loss, because of all the good books. So here’s a list of all the good book I read.
Her Majesty’s Royal Coven by Juno Dawson
This is book 1 in series of the same name and follows multiple perspectives of four friends who were extremely close in childhood but life and circumstances forced them to drift apart. Now, years later, fate throws them together and they all need to understand and figure out their roles in this world while keeping a hold of their values and beliefs at the same time.
I really enjoyed this book. It was full of intrigue and witchcraft, which is one of my favorite element in books. And I have to say this book is worth the hype and I’ll be giving more details of this book in a separate review. However, in the meantime I recommend everyone to pick this book up and give it a read.
Once Upon a Broken Heart by Stephanie Garber
This is book 1 in the series of the same name and follows Evangeline Fox who is trying to win back the love of her life and she’s willing to do whatever it takes to have him, even if she has to make a deal with the devil herself. The devil presents himself in the form of the Prince of Hearts who offers to stop her lovers wedding in exchange for three kisses. And though Evangeline agrees, she soon realizes that she’s gotten more than she bargained for and the Prince of Hearts is playing a game far bigger than she could’ve ever imagined.
I’m going to be honest here. This book/series is a spinoff of the Caraval series by the author, and when I started reading Caraval but I couldn’t get into it so I thought maybe this author wasn’t for me. However, after reading this book I have to say I was wrong. I loved this book a lot. It was super fun and interesting and I really want to read book 2 to see what happens next. The Prince of Hearts has my heart and I can’t wait to read more about it. And I will be giving the Caraval series another chance after finishing this series.
Reawakened by Colleen Houck
This is book 1 in the series of the same name and revolves around the life of Liliana Young who despite coming from an affluent background feels really lonely and one day comes across a sarcophagus in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Her life soon gets entangled with an Egyptian prince who is here on a mission. Liliana wants no part of it but the prince has other plans and soon they embark on an epic quest that not only threatens the arrival of danger but of some new feelings as well.
I’d been meaning to read this book for quite some time and never got the chance. I did have high expectations for it but I found myself being bored from time to time due to the lengthy description. However, I do understand why the description was there. But even though this book didn’t blow my mind, I still had a good time reading it, especially towards the end and I’m glad I finally got to read this book.
Yellowface by R. F. Kuang
This is a standalone and follows the life of June who is a struggling writer and has deep envy for her fellow writer Athena Liu and her success. When Athena dies due to an accident, June ends up stealing her manuscript and publishing it as her own. And there begins the unfolding of a drama that not only takes her to new heights but forces her to acknowledge the deep, ugly truth about herself.
I waited a whole year to read this and I enjoyed this book a lot. As a writer myself, it was slightly uncomfortable to read at times because I felt called out and vulnerable but that just shows how raw and amazing this book is. I do recommend everyone to give this book a chance.
The Body Painter by Pepper Winters
This is book 1 of the Master of Trickery Duet and revolves around the lives of Olin and Gil who are thrown together once again due to fate working its hand. Gil, hiding behind a wall of secrets, keeps telling Olin to stay away from him, but their feelings override every secret and danger until they’re destroyed.
I have been curious about this book since I got to know about it and I finally got the chance to read it. I love this author and have read almost all her works. And I’ve loved each and every one. The writing style is perfect and I hated the villain in this story. That person… I wish I could do something to that person. But the point is, everyone should go and read this book, because it’s really that amazing.
If We Were Villains by M. L. Rio
This is a standalone novel and revolves around the life of Oliver who has been released from jail and recounts the details of what exactly happened to land him in jail in the first place.  He, along with his group of fourth year drama college students prepare themselves to graduate from the esteemed college and face the world. However, rivalry and power struggle causes one of the member to die and there begins the mystery of who actually killed him. Friends turn against friends. Secrets are revealed. But in the end love prevails.
I’m so glad I finally got to read this book. I won’t say much about it here because this book will have its own separate review, but all I’m going to say is, this book was fantastic. I enjoyed everything about it. And I wished I could dive into the world and be a character in this story. I highly recommend everyone to read this book. It’s definitely worth it.
So these are the books I read in October and my thoughts on them. Let me know if you’ve read any of the books mentioned above and your opinion on them. And let’s see how I do in the next month.

October Wrap Up--
Tumblr media
If you can believe it, this is just half of the things I read this month. Though, to be fair, most of my eBooks and eARCs were pretty short. I started the month with the pace of finishing one thing every other day and I kept it going throughout the entire month. Part of that was spurred on by the fact that I got approved for the new Truly Devious ARC and need to get through a few things first. But the months of November and December are hectic at my work so I’m going to enjoy my voracious reading this month with the knowledge that I won’t get nearly as much read for the rest of the year.
Comics/Graphic Novels-- 1. Cowboy Bebop: Supernova Swing by Dan Watters-- 2.5 stars.
Novellas/Short Stories-- 1. When Snowflakes Fall by Tara Wyatt-- 3.25 stars.
2. Like Fresh Fallen Snow by Tara Wyatt-- 4.25 stars.
3. Until the Sun Sets by Tara Wyatt-- 2 stars.
Novels-- 1. Spellslinger by Sebastien de Castell-- 3 stars.
2. Pucked by Helena Hunting-- 3 stars.
3. The Hollow Places by T. Kingfisher-- 4 stars.
4. Escaping Eleven by Jerri Chisholm-- 3.5 stars (original rating).
5. Cupid for Hire by Lila Monroe-- 2.5 stars.
6. None Shall Sleep by Ellie Marnie-- 3.5 stars.
7. Nettle & Bone by T. Kingfisher-- 4 stars.
8. Love Next Door by Helena Hunting-- 4 stars.
9. The Vanishing Stair by Maureen Johnson-- 4 stars (original rating).
10. Order of the Phoenix-- 5 stars (original rating).
11. Missing Clarissa by Ripley Jones-- 3.25 stars.
12. The Hand on the Wall by Maureen Johnson-- 4.5 stars.
The average star rating for the month of October was 3.52 stars. It hasn’t been the best reading month, but I got a lot of things I’ve been meaning to read off my Kindle so I’ll take the win.

October 2023 Wrap Up
We did it, Joe. We finally fucking caught up. I know I'm being ridiculous and these monthly wrap up posts don't really matter to anyone but me, but I actually could not proceed without doing them. Could not dive into my waiting pile of fanfic without coming back to do these. It's been weighing on me all fucking year and now, with two months left, I am finally at peace. Thank fuck, because this has taken me a truly ungodly amount of hours. Like over a full day of work. And I'm feeling a bit like a feral racoon, if I'm being honest.
Things I Wrote
Ok, technically, I did not write anything. I really really fucking wanted to and the words simply would not word. BUT, I beta'd this fic for my partner-in-(whore)crimes @mignon-chignon called Occupational Hazards (dramione, E, 5.7k) and it is a goddamn delight and I demand you read it immediately.
Things I Read
Per usual, there's some HP fic in here. There's firstprince from my slutty little baby wimsy. And there's a handful of smutty shirbert fics for reasons I neither care to examine, nor explain.

Things I'm Reading (Heading into November)
I've got some dramione WIPs I need to catch up on and I'm over the moon to have the time to do so. Also cackling maniacally because I have more than 100 firstprince fics queued up. I made a new airtable two nights ago specifically for firstprince, and my loyal sluts already have half a million words wrapped into my starter pack. I'm ready to be a menace. A terror. An absolute trashgirl. Brace yourselves.

Time for my October books! The month started out great but then I had to slow down because I wanted to draw my calendar and am absolutely unable to only spend half the day doing a thing I like. It's either all or nothing. So I purposefully chose books I expected to be "ok" instead of "omg I need to read more like right now and never stop". It worked. uAub
Aces Wild: A Heist (Amanda DeWitt): First book of the month and easily one of my favourites this year! It was so much fun. So much fun! The plot was good, Jack is a great narrator, the other characters are good as well. And the ace reprentation? Loved it. It’s there without taking over the story which is the way I like it best. There’s also a tiny bit of romance (again without taking over the story) and it’s the cutest. But to be honest, I was hooked from the author’s note in the beginning already: “This is not a love story” OK, sign me up!! 8D
A Taste of Gold and Iron (Alexandra Rowland): Decisions had to be made. I'm usually all in for illustrated covers, but ... not this time. 8D I chose the ornamented version and the first time I openend the book I broke out laughing. Is the illustrated cover version like this, too? Because the ornamented one has pink endpapers. It looks so serious on the outside and then inside is nothing but PINK. Blinding pink. It's glorious. It also inevitably reminded me of the last time I saw this much pink in one place: I work at a printhouse and we make a lot of wedding invitations. Some time ago I processed one that was all pink, inside and outside, everywhere and ... it was for a gay wedding. Inbetween its serious story the book was surprisingly funny, too. I'm so glad that a certain character did not die because in other books his type would be the one to. Even funnier the author herself wanted to end him in earlier drafts but her friends stopped her! Thank god they did! I had a great time reading this. It also made me want to reread Captive Prince because I crave this kind of fantasy.
The 99 Boyfriends of Micah Summers (Adam Sass): Right after I decided to reign in my reading in favor of drawing time this came in from the library. Perfect! It was pretty okay. Cute, easy, very predictable. Very. I told my friend pretty early on what I expected to happen with breakups and jealousy and drama and who's endgame etc. aaaand except that one character not turning out as evil as I thought I was spot-on. 8D It has some "rich (white) kids with nothing else to do but obsessing over love" vibes but it kinda knew and dealt with that. So all in all, I liked reading it but I had no problem putting it down to get to working.
Camp (L.C. Rosen): Chosen for the same reasons as Micah. I even read it in German for easy comfort (and because "support your local market"). I really liked the translation! Other contemporaries I read in German (like Loveless or Red, White & Royal Blue) often felt a bit awkward trying to emulate colloquial language (present tense is not a friend of German literature I think 8D), but the translator here did a really good job. I liked Camp a tad more than Micah, probably because the characters were more interesting. It also had more things to say.
City of Ghosts: Bridge of Souls (VE Schwab): The final volume of the series. It was alright. I'm glad it ended the way it did but I would have been ok with more drama. Are there still books out there who take the hard route? Remember the ending of His Dark Materials? (obviously spoilers) Lyra and Will? Separated forever? My heartbreak? I remember. I'll always remember! I like my happy endings and all but I'm pretty sure the reason why I'm so attached to Will and Lyra is because they never got one. 8D Anyway.
Empress of Salt and Fortune (Nghi Vo): I listened to the audiobook while drawing. The 2,5 hours seemed like something I can handle (I'm bad with long audiobooks) and I can't listen to creepypastas all day. It's not told in the usual story format which made it a bit harder for me to be invested but it was interesting enough. I'll probably listen to the sequel as well at some point.
That's it! All in all I'm satisfied with what I got. All the books were decent to topnotch, my calendar turned out well and November is going great at the moment. Look forward to next month, there will be foxes and tea. uAu

October 2023 Wrap Up
Remember back when I used to post wrap ups in a timely fashion? Yeah, me neither. Anyway...
Books Read: 4
This was a hilariously bad reading month quantity wise. But at least everything I read was really good! I just didn't have the energy to read thanks to my dissertation prospectus. But that's done with now, thank god!
Mrs. Oliphant: 'A Fiction to Herself,' A Literary Life by Elisabeth Jay - 4 stars
The Literary Lives of Mary Elizabeth Braddon: A Study of Her Life and Work by Jennifer Carnell - 4 stars
Romola by George Eliot - 4.5 stars ®
The Athelings, or The Three Gifts by Margaret Oliphant - 4.5 stars
On Tumblr:
