You know how Eric Barone just announced a ton of new content coming to Stardew Valley in version 1.6, despite the fact that this madman is also working on another game I need immediately?

Well. You can blame me for that.

I just started a four-player farm with some friends a few weeks ago, and we got so deep into our own lore about queer women homesteading it up with the help of a Scooby-Doo companion ghost that I had to write a series about them.

This is the first part of that series, which we're not-so-subtly calling "Sapphic Valley."

A crack echoes across the south side of Pelican Town, fracturing the quaint valley settlement's springtime atmosphere. Black birds scatter from various trees, escaping into one massive flock that adds a touch of color to the cherry blossom leaves on the wind. Ripples break up the surface of the babbling river as smallmouth bass dart away.

Yet the memory of that disruption is subsumed as the land reinstates its natural cycle. Birds return to their perches. Fish fight the currents once more.

For all her efforts, Haley is unable to make a dent in this sleepy hellhole she calls home. She pulls the splintered web of dulled pink bubblegum off her candy-red lower lip with her front teeth and goes back to chewing. The rubbery substance has long been massaged of all its flavor, save whatever flecks are pulled from her lipstick with each bubble popped, but she continues to chew with the same mindless abandon that her thumbs flick across the phone hanging limp over her sternum.

The clicking sounds from her smartphone cover up approaching footsteps. Soon enough, a tall figure pokes her head around the rotting wood fence where Haley leans, eyes intently trained on the bored blonde.

Late to the party. Why don’t we like Tár?

Tár is the story of a female conductor who uses her position of power to take advantage of other, younger women in her orchestra.

The predatory lesbian is a common trope of old. I say 'of old', but the truth is it's been less than twenty, thirty years since its usage mostly disappeared from mainstream media.

"But Tár is meant to show that power has no gender." Yes, but they specifically chose a woman who likes women. A very specific, very harmful stereotype. "There are lesbians who sexually harass too." Yes, but we are still fighting the perception that that's more common than it actually is. We are still fighting the perception that being a lesbian automatically means wanting all women and openly lusting after them and disrespecting their boundaries. "Equality also means getting the same villainous roles." Yes, but there is no equality at the minute. How many mainstream lesbian-led movies were there this year? How many Oscar-contending lesbian-led movies have there been in recent years? And most importantly, how many women still get spooked out by finding someone they know is a lesbian and say poisonous shit like 'as long as she doesn't make a pass at me'? How many women/girls still start avoiding a friend because they found out she's a lesbian? There is no equality, there is no equity, there is just a general warming up to the idea of lesbians. And also, and just as importantly, how come you want to pin villainous roles on us when you haven't given any of all those other roles yet? We don't have almost any lesbians in common movie roles. We don't have lesbian superhero protagonist. We don't have lesbian John Wick/Jack Reacher/James Bond. The most lesbianism we had in Disney content until Willow was a two-second kiss in SW9, some gritty, vague couple in the tv show with the dude from Zero Rogue One (can't be bothered to look up the name), and a couple random ladies who hold hands (?) for two seconds in Finding Dory. We don't have lesbian mother who hunts the people who kidnapped her daughter. We don't have lesbian Crazy, Stupid, Love or lesbian Top Gun or lesbian gangster movies or lesbian Irish farmers living their best life or lesbian crime solving or lesbian political movie or lesbian Serious Movie™. Queer people in general are still mostly stuck with conversion therapy and coming out movies, and for lesbians in particular, the blue-filter, dirty-nails period pieces. There's a subset of teen romantic comedies showing up now, which is awesome, but it's still very indie-adjacent (I love indie movies, don't get me wrong, but I'm talking about the need for mainstream content, specifically). So no, the work is by no means done yet. Equality can't be an argument, because we have NOT been given equal roles. We are still at an era where our main character trait is being queer/a lesbian (one of the most satisfying series I watched recently in that regard was a French comedy called Détox (Netflix) where one of the two main characters is a lesbian but it's just presented as a fact of life and not a character trait, which I loved - even though the show itself is not great lol).

And then in comes Tár, where a lesbian's main character trait is being a sexual predator. Where a lesbian's character trait is the arguably most harmful stereotype associated with queer women. Delightful. When we start seeing regular characters in regular films and 'oh yeah, and they're queer', when sexuality becomes more of an afterthought in a character's trait map (sexuality is never an afterthought in real life, but we need that level of normalcy and acceptance and, yes, equality in the media to help effect positive change in the real world too), then we can have movies like Tár. Not right now, when it can still do so much damage.

TL;DR - Tár is a movie that reawakens, feeds into, and perpetuates the profoundly harmful stereotype of the predatory lesbian, at a time when general common sense is at its most brittle and bigots are eager to find new/more reasons to witch-hunt innocent people who just want to live their lives and be happy.

rocky pacheco is my original founder, shes originally from evergreen harbor and moved to henford-on-bagley to study plants and become a farmer. she met her current wife, harvey and they adopted 3 kids, alex, zion and augustus. during my gameplay of gen2 I wanted zion to be my heir but I didn't want to play through university again so I made alex my heir so thats probably why it got confusing.

the family is pretty blended as well I think that part is a bit confusing. rocky is african american and harvey is southeast asian ( they fostered 3 kids of different backgrounds then adopted them cus I feel like that's the most lesbian thing to do LMFAO). alex is latina, I head canon her as mexican, zion is african american and augustus is white. alex married her now ex-husband, ben and he's Italian LOL. so cleo and leo are mexican-italian. so that's also why family events can sometimes look blended esp since my main focus/family are yt!

Farmer Cricket (me) x Shane

Farmer Cricket [AFAB He/They] slowly befriends Shane [AMAB He/Him] and helps him with his mental health recovery, and I cannot help but fall in love with his chicken-loving self… especially because I also struggle immensely with my mental health and adore chicken friends… but I also admire Shane’s willingness to finally accept he needs help and how he’s willing to improve himself not only for others like Jas but also just himself!!! He deserves content and happy feelings!!

Sam x Sebastian

Sam [AMAB He/They] and Sebastian [AMAB They/Them] are kinda obvious to me cuz like… they spend so much time together and are so close!!! Not that all close relationships are inherently romantic, but I just very much see them as being in love… Sam is the softdom extrovert bf and Seb is the sub leaning switch introvert to me :^3

Maru x Abigail

Maru [AMAB She/They] secretly had a crush on Abigail [AFAB She/They] the more she got to know Abigail through Sebastian! Abigail was slightly more hesitant towards developing a relationship with Maru as they didn’t want to upset Seb in any way, but Seb is secretly super supportive of it (despite the fake grossed out looks he gives them whenever they’re affectionate lol)… they bond when Maru is invited to play their games together with Seb and Sam, and they also both enjoy the night sky (which leads to many many summer stargazing dates where Abigail plays her flute for Maru and Maru explains the different constellations for Abigail)

Leah x Haley

Leah [AFAB She/Her] and Haley [AFAB She/Her] are probably one people won’t understand right away, but let me explain… especially during the summers, Haley spends so much time in the forest near Leah’s house to work on her photography… similarly, Leah is outside working on her artwork as well, so they’re bound to interact in some way! And I believe they would totally find it admirable in each other with their dedication to their own type of art!! And I firmly believe that in this case, opposites attract as well as because they’re so different they would totally bring out the best in each other!! Leah softens Haley’s defensive walls with her friendliness and also encourage Haley to be more directly interactive with her nature relationship (especially regarding her photography), and Haley will completely encourage Leah to keep her standards in people as high as it should be, as well as encouraging Leah to find a beauty within herself that she’s not explored much before!!! Overall, I just see them as being so sweet together and I know they’d make an adorable couple!! (Also Alex, being Haley’s best friend, is so so supportive, cuz he knew Haley was a lesbian all along but never outed her in any way so the two refused to deny any accusations of them being together until Haley was ready to come out!!)

Penny x Alex (aka the token straight couple lol)

Penny [AFAB She/Her] doesn’t interact with Alex [AMAB He/Him] much other than just simple pleasantries from being neighbors… Evelyn and George encourage Alex to introduce himself better to Penny, and he does and finds that Penny is one of the sweetest people he’s ever met!!! Penny is obviously timid (especially around him at first), but the more they get to know each other, the more they find amazing qualities in each other!! Penny admires Alex’s determined attitude towards succeeding in life despite his struggles, and Alex admires Penny’s dedication towards giving the kids of the town a better chance in life through love, support, and education! They also (unfortunately) bond over having an abusive/alcoholic parent (Pam sympathizers GET OUT!!! Abusive parenting is not excusable!!!)… they help each other process their childhood trauma and learn to respect their own boundaries and needs with encouragement from each other!!!

Marnie x Marlon

Marnie [AFAB She/Her] finally allows herself to dump loser Lewis (he doesn’t deserve the gem that Marnie is cuz he only wanted to hide their relationship and Marnie deserves someone that is immensely proud to be her partner!!!) and spends some time single to reflect on what she wants in love… during the following Festivals in the town, she interacts with Marlon [AFAB He/Him] more and the two hit it off!! Marlon is extremely affectionate and treats Marnie like a goddess!!! Marnie appreciates the affection and equally develops a love for him! Marnie encourages Marlon to interact with the townspeople more often and eventually they spend time together in the Saloon every Friday night!! Marlon acts as a wonderful father figure towards Jas (and even Shane), and Marnie adores his caring nature!!

Harvey x Elliott

Harvey [AMAB He/Him] doesn’t think much about Elliott [AMAB He/Him], as they aren’t usually in the same areas of town at the same time… but Harvey sometimes likes to visit the beach to relax his always speedy mind by listening to the ocean waves! There he interacts with Elliott more and more, but doesn’t think much of their brief friendship… but Elliott, being the poetic hopeless romantic he is, sees the potential in them and decides to write a lovely letter to Harvey inviting him on a date! Harvey is very much shocked by the sudden romantic interest and straightforwardness, but decides to take a chance and go! Elliott and Harvey eventually grow a strong relationship that is fueled by their natural passion in life (Harvey being passionate about helping people as well as piloting, and Elliott being passionate about his writing and environmental protection)!!!

Anyways, those were pretty much it for my headcannons regarding character relationships!! I included my brief headcannons for each character’s gender cuz I feel strongly about certain folks being trans >:3 (I am queer and trans myself btw)!!! But I also have specific headcannons for each character having a different race/ethnicity than the cannon “almost-every-character-is-white”, so if anyone is interested in that, I can post those sometime too!! I’m still working on finishing those headcannons, cuz I can’t decide if I wanna change their names in slight ways to better fit them… I want to but it might get confusing for anyone but me when talking about them lol😅 but I’m more than willing to explain!!!

I love that I’m getting back into Stardew Valley tho cuz I haven’t played in a long time and forgot how much I adore the game!!! Thank you current Stardew Valley hyperfixation lol (I’m diagnosed as having ADHD so that’s why I used that term btw!!)

What the World Thinks of "Wednesday"

A compilation of some headlines about Wednesday from various publications since the series debuted in November 2022, showing different views of the series.

Since it's debut on Netflix on November 23, 2022, Wednesday, a live-action supernatural coming-of-age comedy horror series, has been all the rage online. Thanks to its unprecedented popularity, those on social networks like Twitter, Facebook, Tik Tok, and Tumblr, in thinkpieces, and elsewhere, have reviewed the series, providing their own views and perspectives. This reception often focuses on potential queerbaiting, anti-Black undertones, or something else entirely.

Reprinted from Pop Culture Maniacs and Wayback Machine. This was the nineteenth article I wrote for Pop Culture Maniacs. This post was originally published on January 9, 2023.

A major point of contention for reviewers has been the lack of LGBTQ representation, especially when it comes to the protagonist, Wednesday Addams (played by Jenna Ortega). For example, Petrana Rudolvic of Polygon argued that "Wednesday doesn’t need a love triangle, she needs a werewolf girlfriend", referring to Wednesday's roommate, Enid Sinclair. Their romantic ship, popular in the show's fandom and in fanfictions, has been dubbed "Wenclair" by fans which embrace it. This ship has been embraced by Ortega herself, something which some LGBTQ newsletters have pointed out.

Others, like Abby Monteil of Them magazine, have declared "Let Wednesday Addams Be Gay". Monteil added that Wednesday is a "queer icon" due to her close friendship with Enid. These views are reinforced by those fans who believe that the series is queerbaiting because their Wenclair headcanon did not happen.

However, such claims are tricky. This is because, as David Opie of Digital Spy admitted, the show "never really promised anything queer outright", at least not the way that Wenclair fans had hoped for. Additional fans pointed to chemistry between Wednesday and Bianca during the scenes where they act side-by-side.

There is undoubtedly chemistry between Enid and Wednesday, and nice scenes of them together, including when they hug each other, or when Enid saves Wednesday from the monster. However, it is clear that both characters were intended to only be friends in this story, and nothing more. Furthermore, Enid and Wednesday have romances with men. Enid has a short-lived relationship with Lucas and off-and-on relationship with Ajax Petropolus (played by Georgie Farmer). Wednesday has a relationship with Tyler Galpin (played by Hunter Doohan), who is the the son of Sheriff Galpin. The latter falls apart when Wednesday learns that Tyler is the monster, the hyde, who has been haunting the school and killing people.

On the other hand, some fans believed that there were clear asexual, or even aromantic, vibes from Wednesday, citing that she detested friendship and connecting with people. Wednesday prefers solitude, even though her burgeoning friendships with Enid, Eugene, and Xavier indicate that invisible walls she erected around herself are coming down. It is possible that Wednesday will have a LGBTQ storyline in a second season, exploring her possible asexual, lesbian, or bisexual identity.

The series has also been hit with accusations it is racist, and with anti-Black undertones, on Twitter and elsewhere. The latter is reinforced, in the minds of some, by previous comments from Tim Burton defending his casting choices in Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, which had a cast with little diversity. Some went further, claiming that his previous films featured token characters of color, downplayed Jewish cultural elements, or had stereotypes of overweight people.

Various social media users have criticized portrayal of Black characters as "villains and bullies" of Wednesday. This includes a focus on Bianca as a mean girl and Lucas Walker (portrayed by Iman Marson) as a bully. The latter is the son of a corrupt mayor of Jericho, Noble Walker (portrayed by Tommie Earl Jenkins) who owns Pilgrim Land. As a result, the strong Latine representation in the series is offset by the Black characters painted as a villain.

While the criticisms of racism in Wednesday is well-intentioned, they distort the reality. For one, Bianca and Lucas are redeemed by the end of the series, which is only eight episodes long. Both help Wednesday fight off Joseph Crackstone and capture the suspected hyde. Crackstone is many times worse than Jack Skellington in The Nightmare Before Christmas, a film by Burton, a character which some have described as a colonizer.

Also, the deputy of Sheriff Galpin, Ritchie Santiago (portrayed by Luyanda Unati Lewis-Nyawo), is a Black woman. Bianca has more depth in her character Callie, a mean girl in Cleopatra in Space. For one, viewers learn about how Bianca fell out her mother, changed her name to distance herself from the Morning Song cult which her mother is a part of, and joined the Nightshades. She is integral to the story because she is Xavier's ex-girlfriend. Lucas assists Wednesday by providing information which helps her recognize who the monster really is, and he connects with Bianca.

Mayor Walker, a Black man, stands out as a negative character. He is easily manipulated and propped up by Principal Weems, who keeps him in power to hide the reality of Nevermore Academy. Near the end of the series, he is killed by the hyde because he was about to meet with Sheriff Galpin. An interview with his actor, Jenkins, could shed more light on his character.

Beyond possible anti-Black undertones and lack of queer representation in Wednesday criticized by reviewers and fans, some have said the series was two-dimensional, similar to CW dramas, and noted its appeal to Generation Z. There is a case to be made that Wednesday uses elements employed in the Harry Potter films, based on the Harry Potter books by transphobic author J.K. Rowling.

Such criticisms were reflected on Rotten Tomatoes, New York Times, The Wrap, The Independent, and elsewhere. In contrast, some reviewers described the series in generally favorable terms, calling it as a "rococo romp" that is delightful, visually appealing, and praised the deadpan humor of Ortega. This is in line with those who argue that Wednesday's eyes convey emotional truth as she is never shown blinking, not even once, in the series.

However, Wednesday's appearance is not unique. Characters such as Kaisa in Hilda and Amity Blight in The Owl House are likely shown in black-colored clothes with for the same reasons. Furthermore, Wednesday's demeanor has caused her to become an icon, especially to those in the LGBTQ community. The franchise itself has been popular enough to influence series such as Dead End: Paranormal Park, and designs of characters in The Flintsones and The Simpsons.

The series, listed as one of the best TV shows of 2022, garnered various award nominations, and certain scenes became a viral sensation. This included Wednesday's dance scene, shared on TikTok by celebrities, and as a song on Spotify.

Songs used in Wednesday, like the 1981 song "Goo Goo Muck" by the Cramps, surged in popularity. The Guardian argued that the viral dance trend, which mainly spread on Tik Tok, "may have single-handedly revived Gothic subculture for Gen Z", causing the show to become a "pop culture phenomenon".

On the whole, despite the fact that Wednesday has achieved immense popularity, its reception is varied. It is hard to know how if this popularity will last or whether it will become passing fad like The Queen's Gambit and Mrs. America in 2020 or Maid in 2021. With a second season now ordered by Netflix, we shall see if it’s popularity can endure.
