[A sad violin song plays over an image of a sad hamster]
Pac: This doesn't have anything to do with me – I wear a blue sweatshirt, you're crazy, this mouse doesn't even have a sweatshirt, this hamster! [Reading chat] Am I a depressed hamster?
Tumblr media
[ Transcript continued ↓ ]*
Pac: Actually– that's fine! I embrace that idea – of course I'm going to be depressed, are you crazy? [He hits his desk, then starts counting off people on his fingers] Fit is gone, Richarlyson is gone, Ramon is gone, Bagi and Empanada who were always there when we were there are also gone, I haven't seen them! It's just me and Tubbo, and sometimes Philza shows up.
Pac: I lost Chume Labs, I lost the Favela, I lost Murder Mystery, I lost Ilha Chume Labs, it's crazy! Look at how much I've lost, and I've gained nothing! Of course I'm going to be depressed, are you crazy?! How am I supposed to be happy?!
Pac: [Reading chat] "You have us Pac," that's true, thank you. No, that's true, sorry.
* NOTE: Please note that this is an incomplete transcript, as I was primarily relying on Aypierre's translation mod at the time and if I am not confident of the translation, I do not include it. As always, please feel free to add on translations or message me corrections.
#Pactw#QSMP#Pac#March 18 2024#As much as I love keeping people updated about Pac / the other Portuguese-speaking creators#I think I might not make as many transcribed posts for their clips anymore#I just don't think I'm qualified enough to be transcribing things for a language I don't know#like yeah we have the Qlobal Translator and Aypierre's translators to rely on#And I'm always upfront when I'm not 100% sure about a translation#but I've been thinking about it a lot and it kinda makes me feel a bit icky. Idk.#I might be overthinking this but I just I don't want to spread around translations I'm not super confident about#esp. since I know a lot of people cite my clips in analysis posts or link them to other people as resources#and 90% of the time I'm like ''Hell yeah I love seeing people getting a lot of use out of the archive''#but sometimes I get a bit anxious like ''Did I do a good enough job translating this''#''Am I ruining someone's entire perception of a conversation or character because I left one word out or mistranslated something?''#And like I said that's normally not a HUGE concern since if I'm not certain about a translation I just won't post a clip. but you know#idk it might just be the anxiety talking but I really really don't want to spread bad info#Happy to hear other folks' perspective#I'm really grateful for people like Bell and Pix and others who translate clips and I always try to reblog those#but we don't have a ton of people posting clips & translating things on Tumblr since we're so English-centric#which is part of the reason WHY I like sharing clips of the non-English-speaking CCs#but at the same time I want to do an accurate job representing what they're saying#Maybe I'll just start posting things and give a TLDR context of what they're talking about but not a transcript#that way native-speakers can hop in and add translations if that's something they're comfortable doing#and if not then well. at least I'm not sharing something that isn't super accurate#idk I'm just thinking out loud a bit in the tags#But I'm open to hearing other people's thoughts on the matter#Anyways giant rant aside. q!Pac is NOT doing ok rn

Resident Evil Rock Band AU
Featuring Claire as the frontman, Leon on lead guitar, Jill on the bass, and Chris on the drums.
Claire, Leon, Jill, and Chris form a band named Resident Evil a la Måneskin, a slutty little rock group with hard vocals, a heavy bassline, and songs about getting fucked and destroying the world
Claire is the frontman, lead singer, and face of the group. She's your classic riot grrrl rockstar, an outspoken feminist and anti-bioterrorism activist. She's a little rough around the edges but loves a good laugh and will protect the people she loves with her life. She's been arrested several times for protesting, vandalism, and punching assholes who deserved it.
Leon plays guitar, and yes he is that guitarist, the one everyone falls in love with. While his performances are over the top, he's much shyer offstage and doesn't quite know how to take a compliment. Fans love his interviews because he's so genuinely honest and unintentionally funny. His dad jokes have gone viral (pun intended) several times. While not as openly controversial as Claire, he also advocates for victims of bioterrorism and actively volunteers to help cities in crisis after attacks.
Jill is the band's stoic and beloved bass player. Quieter than her bandmates, Jill is the heart of the group. While everyone plays their part in writing and composing RE's songs, Jill is the main lyricist and producer of their tracks. She often streams live from their studio and shows fans the process of making music. She is very visibly ex-military and keeps up with her training, sometimes filming her exercises and regiments. She can be found with Leon volunteering during bioterrorism crises.
Chris is very similar to his sister. Ex-military and outspoken, he is the voice of the group and has gotten into his fair share of scandals for not following the rules. He is loud and passionate and openly adores his bandmates and fans. Out of everyone, he is most willing to go out of his way to interact with fans and will always leave them with a piece of encouraging advice. He is the jokester of the group and fully believes that any publicity is good publicity. He is the only member who still takes military contracts to work on the front lines of terror attacks.
Resident Evil was formed after all four band members survived the atrocity of Raccoon City. Claire had been in the city visiting her brother Chris while on break from college. Chris and Jill worked together on a special task force with the police department and lived in the city. Leon, a Raccoon native, was a local firefighter. Chris, Jill, and Leon were all first responders when the outbreak started, with Chris and Jill organising rescues and helping survivors make it to the safety of the police station and Leon working triage with them. Claire volunteered her help and the four of them worked together until the virus breached RPD and there was nothing left to do but survive.
None of them ever really talk about what happened in the city, but many of their songs condemn the actions, ideologies, and greed that allowed Raccoon to fall victim to bioterrorism. Their most popular song is a ballad in remembrance of the victims of that day, ironically seconded by a raunchy tune about fucking until the dawn because you're never promised tomorrow.
No one knows if anyone in the band is actually dating or not (except Claire and Chris who are known siblings and obviously not together). Leon is frequently seen making out with Claire and Chris both on and off the stage; Claire has been caught on camera multiple times with Jill; and Jill is often seen out with Chris, though most fans think she's dating their stage manager Carlos Oliveira
RE performs an annual charity show for victims of bioterrorism, all of the proceeds of which go towards NGOs like TerraSave. The group is currently working to organize a charity festival with bigger bands for greater proceeds
(To Be Continued..)
Ahh! The start of a larger AU! Please reblog and comment if you enjoyed <3

non-Americans on Thanksgiving: happy thanksgiving to my american friends and followers!! 🦃🦃🦃
Americans on Thanksgiving: We're living on stolen land. This country was built on the murdered bodies of natives. They're still being systemically killed to this day and we must fight for their rights and their land.

Btw the efficiency with which you learn a language really depends so much on the methods you use. While learning by translation (e.g. that jabłko = apple) works to some degree, any speech or writing in your target language will have to travel through an additional mental layer before you can understand or say it—as opposed to if you learned the words more directly (e.g. that jabłko = 🍎). Moreover, the applicability of translation as a means of approaching your target language falls apart as the linguistic distance between your native and target languages increases. Going from one indo-european language to another, you'll be mostly okay as long as you remember some language-specific rules, but outside of that things become ever more difficult. Much of Japanese, for example, cannot directly translate to English. There is absolutely no English equivalent for the nuances in choice of first- and second- person pronouns (or the choice not to use a pronoun at all!) in Japanese that can at all be understood when translated as the all-covering "I" or "you". Attempting to understand such linguistic differences in the terms of English does a disservice to one's learning and does not respect the Japanese language as something which exists on its own right, independent of the English language.
Now, to a certain point, using your native language to learn a target language is necessary. For the time being, the simplest resource for learning basic and topic-relevant words is a vocabulary list or an inter-language dictionary. Any introductory grammar is also much easier to learn the rules of in one's own native tongue. While one most likely could learn a language solely through engaging in media in that language, much as a baby learns their first language, without any guidance (which as yet seems only to be provided in full-time immersion programs designed for this purpose, which require not only a significant amount of money but also the free time not to be working at all during the duration of the program) this will take years.
That being said, having initially learned something in one's own native language does not mean that one should practice it in said native language. If you are using flash cards, then, using the aforementioned example of "jabłko", it would be better to have the definition side be a picture of an apple rather than the word "apple". To practice the conjugation of the relevant verb "jeść" as well, it would be better to have a card which is something like "ona [jeść] jabłko" than to have a card which requires you to translate "she eats an apple". (Obviously after a certain point, one will have to develop a method of telling oneself which tense is needed, but that is its own subject.) Through this, one develops a more direct and "intuitive" sense of the target language.
Learning in such a manner presents more initial difficulty, as it requires much more individual effort than does simply memorizing ready-made lists of words and grammatical rules, but the efficiency gained in learning and the depth gained in understanding more than makes up for this.

they're the majority demographic on this site so it's inevitable, but let's try get some balance
countries were included based on Commonwealth membership, and whether English is an official and/or predominant language according to Wikipedia.

every so often I'm hit with the feeling I am out of place in circles that like cowboys. Like. I have experiences with horses. Multiple people in my family have ranches and work with horses and livestock for a living. I did rodeo stuff when I was younger (and likely would have kept doing it if my family hadn't had to move for work). I like the western/cowboy aesthetic and I have a southern accent that comes out if I don't enunciate properly.
but then i see people talking about things such as online rp things using the American West as a setting (vs Fantasy world with the aesthetics) and I look at the rules-
Tumblr media
and i'm struck with the question of 'how would this group ever handle a native character?' I like playing indigenous(coded) characters because I am native! I'm an Indian!! but i would never feel welcome in an RP group where the American West was free land for the taking.

Maybe it’s just me but I don’t think I’ve seen MCU fandom blatantly sexualize a male character to the degree it’s currently doing so to Namor and honestly I’m KINDA uncomfortable about it!!

tone indicators
I reblogged this post without adding any commentary bc queue and not a lot of computer time lately but like okay here's the thing about tone indicators:
they're yet another in-group set of coded speech. like an inside joke, or a meme, or a conlang. if you are in a group that uses them, they're great and perfectly comprehensible.
but if you don't happen to have come from inside a group that uses them, they are exactly as exclusionary as any other heavy jargon or inside joke or acronym. I mean have you ever listened to soldiers talk? The US Army communicates in heavily jargon-ified speech, liberally laden with acronyms, so much so that it's a self-referential joke to make up obscene or deliberately-obfuscated ones to slip into official reports since the sorts of people who'd kick up a fuss about obscene language won't understand them.
It is exactly the same thing. Except that's exclusionary on purpose, and tone indicators are exclusionary in effect but tout themselves as inclusionary.
So if I, an outsider to this, am reading along, and after a sentence, there's a / and then between one and three letters, that is not enough information for me to use to look it up.
This is absolutely inaccessible if you are not alreadhy in the group that uses it.
I wouldn't mind if the people who used them were just like 'oh ha sorry jargon, i'll try to explain if it's not clear, sorry i forget you guys don't know them' just like any other inside joke or meme or whatever.
But I was in a discussion with someone on a Discord and when I was puzzled about them including these weird slash-acronyms after their statements they were like oh how nice for you that you're not neurodivergent and don't need to use these.
Uh no. The opposite actually. I'm the kind of neurodivergent that needs context. I handle being excluded from conversations very poorly. And that's where I get pissed off, that people seem to be holding these up as the new be-all end-all of Finally Solving The Problem Of Ambiguous Tones In Social Interaction. The hell you are, kids. They're just another layer, and I'd say the worst one yet, out of many many many attempts to solve this exact problem. They are fundamentally inaccessible. Don't mistake the fact that you learned them (somewhere, in some context inaccessible to me) for them actually being universal.
Considered against the many different solutions that have been offered since text-only speech was invented, tone indicators stack up as among the very least-accessible of the lot, since they contain so little context in and of themselves-- if a key is not provided then they're totally inaccessible, and are exceptionally difficult for non-native English speakers, and in general require so much memorization or cross-referencing as to be prohibitively hostile to outsiders.
And that's fine, if what your'e doing is just meant for talking to your friends. But don't come into my conversations and berate me for not having memorized whatever incomprehensible set of acronyms you've newly-decided are the new universal truth. And what drives me the most insane is how many of these acronyms someone has now decided to assign a whole new meaning to are acronyms that are well-known and already existed and are in heavy use. So if you try to look them up guess what you get! is it gonna be the newly-created version or the one that's been in use for fifty to seventy-five years??
For one, P.O.S. has had a specific meaning in written and spoken English for a really damn long time and if you call me a piece of shit in the actual language I speak I am absolutely not going to interpret your conlang as having intended something nice. (YES REALLY THEY'RE USING THAT ONE TRY TO GUESS WHAT IT MEANS. NO. NO! I know. Fuck! That's wild. Absolutely the fuck not.)

I think it's very funny when people on tumblr tell me that "decolonisation is not a metaphor". Because, uh, yeah. I know that. My ancestors were colonised and stripped of our native lands, forced to assimilate and lose our culture, forced to convert and lose our religion. Every day I work to undo that damage. Every day I study Hebrew because my family could not do so safely under colonialism. Every day I pray to a G-d that my people could not safely worship under colonialism. Every day I study and embrace ancient Jewish ways of learning, thinking and being that were lost because of colonialism. I share this knowledge with my family, with my friends, and with my community. As an academic, I am actively involved in attempting to unmake the violent and continued coloniality of my people's homeland, hoping to undo the damage caused by Brits, Romans and Turks. I do that for the benefit of native peoples in the land-- all of them. Jews, Arabs, Druze, Samaritans and Bedu all deserve equality and peace. Decolonization isn't a metaphor to me. It's a constant way of life.
And what are you, non-indigenous American goy on tumblr, doing for your decolonization? Are you learning the Cherokee language? Sioux? Muscogee? Do you spend your spare time meeting with the indigenous tribes local to your area? Do you push your representatives to help those tribes have greater access to land, healthcare, and autonomy? Can you even list the names of the native peoples whose land you walk on without looking them up?
Or does your "decolonisation" look like an occasional land acknowledgement, reblogging lip-service posts about the plights of indigenous communities, and using your political views to justify attacking Jews on the internet? 'Cause patting yourself on the back for that sure looks like a metaphor to me.

!! IN NEED OF HELP !!
(Previous post)
(Note: any mention on the previous post links about my pinned post isn’t about this one. I accidentally deleted the previous one)
Hi! Me and my roommate are poor, disabled, and queer, myself being Native American also. They are unable to work due to their disability and my work is purely seasonal and is near non-existent in the winter when needed most and is also VERY rough oh me physically.
I don’t have health insurance at present and have been fighting with unemployment for the period of time I didn’t have any work at all with little success, and food stamps still thinks I have two jobs and only gives me $23 a month.
We need money badly for food for us, my cat and their elderly dog, and for rent and bills to be paid on time (5th of every month) as every day it’s late they charge a $50 late fee
I make adoptables (here and here) and take commissions (info here) and also accept donations. If you’re unable to donate or purchase something, a reblog would be appreciated, please. Thank you so much.
