Things I've seen tumblr memeing about James Somerton doing à la "How did no one see how bigoted he was!" as if those things haven't been a significant part of tumblr culture for over a decade :

Presenting untrue and bordering on conspiratorial versions of (queer or otherwise marginalised) history without any sources

Completely disregarding and disrespecting any expertise on socio-cultural topics/humanities and distrusting academics and historians (incl. acting as if no academics or historians could be queer or marginalised)

Downplaying the role misogyny played in the historical oppression of queer women and concluding that queer men must have been more oppressed than queer women

Bi women are, at best, not as queer as "real" queer ppl, and at worst, simply equivalent to straight women

Despite nominal trans inclusivity, transmasculine ppl are functionally women when convenient (combined with the above, bi transmascs are functionally straight women)

Despite nominal trans inclusivity (bis), shamelessly attacking, threatening and actively endangering any trans woman who questions them or smth they find important (often by unfairly presenting her as violent or as a threat)

Having absolutely fucking wild and reductive takes about ace ppl, the oppression they face and their place in the queer community

Stating that marriage equality is an assimilationist fight while completely ignoring its direct roots in the horrifying consequences of the AIDS crisis for partners of ppl who died of AIDS

Praising western media creators from the past for queer coding even under censure and in the same breath condemning current non western media creators for being homophobic bc their representation isn't explicit enough

Blaming China for all existing homophobic censoring in western media

Assuming all queer media would be better told by western creators and by western standards

Only out queer ppl get to tell queer stories

Heavily criticising almost all queer media created by women or ppl they see as such (see above points about trans ppl) or involving/starring a significant amount of women for any perceived or real amount of "problematicness", but fawning over and praising and negating criticism of queer media created by and starring mostly or even functionally exclusively men (even when it could be argued that, you know, not involving/seriously sidelining women is a pretty clear example of misogyny which should probably be considered "problematic")

And I'm probably forgetting stuff or there's stuff I have internalised myself and don't recognise as an issue

Like idk but I feel like the takeaway from Hbomberguy and Toddintheshadow's videos should maybe be "be aware of such patterns in your communities bc they definitely exist" and not "this guy is uniquely awful" and I feel like a lot of the discussion I've seen surrounding this has been severely failing at that. Most ppl who've spent any significant amount of time on tumblr prob either have internalised at least one of those thought patterns, have had to de-internalise them, or have had to be extremely vigilant to not internalise them (which is done by, you know, seeking out other sources, which also seemed like an important takeaway from the videos)

(there will still be a post tomorrow to keep on track) #The original 3 panel comic idea was fine but the point of this new schedule was to take time to push myself a bit more. #I was taking a look back through some comic artists I felt inspired by #and I really loved how Lynda Barry fills her gutters with patterns and doodles! #Obviously I'm not going as absolutely wild with it as she does but it was a great exercise! #I truly think the gutters are the most important and most overlooked part of any comic. There's lots going on in that space. #It's the same with timeskips. The implied movement between moments that we don't see changes depending on how wide that gap is #You're here for the funny tags so here's some that ties this time talk together: #I think LWJ was thinking about that second note from day 2 but it took him 7 days of hazing to commit it to paper. #I think he sends it a day later and immediately regrets it. Chasing down the messenger and everything. #You know if something actually happened to his brother he would never ever forgive himself for putting the bad vibes out there. #Third time skip was the hardest because there was so many possible flavours of jokes here. Day 8/9 was a personal favourite. #day 14 was also funny (week by week). I think the debate on 'how long does lwj take to catch feelings' is more or less: #'how long does it take for him to arrive at a particular stage of grief and yearning (and awareness of it all) #This is a symphony. There is an act by act structure. Every day he is fighting to keep his old sensibilities. He is losing so badly. #(I'll be returning to the main comic soon but there is more of this AU to come!)

"Hold that thought."

The finger on your lips is soft and gentle, the hand on your shoulder firm and warm. Cyno's pensive gaze was intense as his gaze looked to the side, while yours were wide and dilated from the sudden proximity. Mind blanking, you fail to notice the scribe scoffing next to you.

Both of your attention was on the white-haired man as he rounded to an alley, the wall obscuring your vision as an unfamiliar voice came from there. Next thing you know, you startle at the sound of a scream as Cyno pinned some stranger to the wall by the neck, pleading for his life.

By the angle of the scene, although you cannot see much, you could just imagine the terrifying crimson glare the general had just by looking at the culprit's paling face. Soon enough, the man was unconscious on the floor as Cyno made his way back over, dusting his hands like he had taken out the trash.

Cupping your warming cheeks and stumbling over your words when the man in front of you asked you to continue, Alhaitham can't help but roll his eyes, leveling his gaze with Cyno's prideful ones.

"Stay right there."

Alhaitham urges you with a tight grip on your arm, pulling you close behind him as his body moved to a fighting stance, cold eyes flitting across the port. Sliding his hand down to yours, he kept his gaze at the Eremites surrounding you two. A reassuring squeeze, before the man slotted the handle of his sword to your hand.

Does he not need this? Your panicked eyes met with his over his shoulder, only for a smirk to appear on his chiseled face. "Hold that for me, would you?" Before dashing to the nearest enemy after catching them off guard.

You held your breath at the sight of Alhaitham using his fists and legs to incapacitate an Eremite one after the other, once using the enemy's haunched over back to leap off of and dropkick the second to the last member. He didn't even have to try, evading the attacks swiftly before moving in to knock the guy unconscious with an elbow to his temple.

The commotion ended with the Scribe standing tall amongst groaning men on the floor, flicking his coat aside as he stalked over to you. His breathing is audible now, but there was barely any sweat on his forehead. "You're drifting off again." You startle at the feeling of his grip around your hand, the one barely holding his sword.

A few blocks away, the General Mahamatra clicked his tongue in annoyance, pushing himself off the wall as he walked away from the port. Guess he wasn't needed this time.

"Such weirdos, aren't they? Of all the people..."

"Why is he here again? We were just having a nice time too."

"The lunatic and the dwarf in one place?"

"Have you heard? Those two had been beating up citizens lately, I wouldn't be surprised if they're just harassing that one -"

Cyno and Alhaitham quickly turned at the sound of commotion following a crash behind them, their trained bodies already holding their weapons out in a defensive stance. Only when the crowd part did they let up, realizing the situation.

A whimpering dastur cowering with his head in his hands laid on the ground, held down by a foot on his back. Following the owner of the leg, the two were dumbfounded to see you glaring at the random researcher, digging the heel of your shoe at his back.

"Who the hell do you think you are?" Your voice was raspy and deep. "If any of you badmouth Cyno or Alhaitham again, I'm coming for you." A challenging growl resounds from your chest as you lift your head, daring the people around you to stare back.

And in the crowd you saw two familiar heads, who had their faces covered with their hands, face slightly angled away from your view.

"Someone should report to the Grand Sage about that heathen-"

The bystander immediately shut his mouth in fear the moment the Scribe and the General turned towards him in break neck speed. No matter how out of place the blush is on their faces, the glare they don is still very, very terrifying.

Henry says if he had the time, he'd sit Bunny down and explain everything to him. This is right after they scare Bun in Henry's house, when they show up all bloody, and Henry's like there was no time to explain because anyone might've seen them- but what about later?

I can't stop thinking about: what if you just TOLD him what happened? Bunny's biggest issue, according to Henry, was not the fact that they'd killed somebody, it was that they'd excluded him. (Personally I also thinkk it was bcs of the "several very unkind things" he'd written in his stupid little diary but sure henry, whatever helps u sleep at ni8)

I just feel like Bunny would've been less annoying about the whole thing and possibly even slightly concerned (about the cops finding out or something) because then he'd feel like he could still be implicated bcs he'd realize he had no alibi that could be confirmed and his previous involvement with the greek class would make him suspect too, and if he didn't realize it, Henry would 'remind' him of the fact.

It's just that...I know Henry was very disillusioned w Bunny towards the end, like he hated him, couldn't stand him, felt suffocated by him- but that was still someone he'd, at one point, cared about. I think Bunny at least deserved a fucking chance.

Instead of Henry avoiding him (ish) and avoiding the topic after Rome, why didn't the fool try to talk sense into Bunny? I know he was mentally exhausted, but the way his mind was like, going straight to murder makes me think he'd probably thought about it before too 💀💀

Even the actual murder bro like. Like. You lure him in and then you just suddenly shove him. Bunny didn't get a chance to plead for mercy or anything, or to promise he wouldn't tell anybody, so on so forth. I mean, Henry could have tried a scare tactic (pretending like they were gonna kill him to drive the point home, make him understand his position) but no, he jumped to murder immediately.

I suppose I can try and see where Henry was coming from. He didn't like to overcomplicate things, and maybe threatening Bunny would backfire like everything else did, maybe embolden him more. I get the impression that Bun was the sort to get worse if he was treated badly, even if he deserved it, but maybe being reminded of his own mortality would knock some sense into him. I know he was childish and immature and it makes me think he was one of those ppl you'd have to talk to nicely and try to appeal to his sense of friendship/loyalty for him to be nice, return the energy. Idk guys, I just wanted to get this thought out og my brain.

Also not to put the blame solely on Henry. My man was tired. Why didn't the other losers try and be like "Lol wtf. No." I know Henry was like their boss or whatever, admired yada yada but like...? He wasn't the dictator sort, like they couldnt talk to him even if they wanted to. This is why I think each one of them is just as bad as the other. I mean charles was showing hesitance before the murder and then after he was the most (visibly) regretful, even richard expressed some grief (or maybe he only did so in the book to seem nice) but yeah yeah yeah idk where im going w this but u get my point

Vitalasubzam Week 2024 1st day: Flowers / Symbolism

since this day is about flowers and symbolism ofc i went with hanahaki

notes:

dandelions indicating zam is p obvious -- after all thats what the guy uses himself -- but the fact that they, or more specifically their seeds, are tied to wish-granting adds a neat layer to it i think considering zam's symbol of being a star (in my interpretation) also ties in to wish-granting

this whole thing is based on zam going "subz can fix me," and while i didnt know how to portray it without making an entire comic which i didnt really wanna do, he actually doesnt want the flowers gone he just wants subz to stitch not just his chest close but also his mouth

i was originally gonna make the thread purple but decided to go with green

the x's, while supposed to be tied to the whole stitching theme going on, are red instead of green because of zam

i had trouble picking the bg color cause on one hand i wanted to make it dark but on the other hand i wanted the focus on subz despite the composition which would need a lighter color, in the end i chose the same white as zam's shirt cause i like that it made him look cut off

zam has no nipples cause his species (skyformes) are homunculi in my Minecraft LoreTM (he should also have way more scars than just his neck but i havent decided where to put them yet)

this was actually drawn right when i changed zam's design to have red teeth but it made making the dandelion seeds visible a nightmare so i decided to just keep them white in this drawing
