Random Thoughts in a Boring Meeting, Quirks of Middle Earth Languages Edition:
You know how every language has certain words that don’t translate easily into other languages? Maybe they represent something specific to their own culture/setting, or maybe they describe a broadly recognized concept but others just never assigned a specific word to that idea (like how there is apparently a term in Tagalog for “something so cute that you just want to squeeze it”?). I’m writing a fic now about Faramir learning Rohirric as a surprise for Éowyn, so I’ve been thinking about how that dynamic might show up in Middle Earth.
Of course I think Rohirric would have lots of horse-related words that other races never bothered with. Like, the Rohirrim don’t just have walk, trot, canter and gallop. They’ve got all kinds of words for the way a horse moves, like when it’s wading through shallow water or slows down to pick its way through rocky, uneven terrain. Culturally, too, I think they’d have plenty of unique terms that reflect their particular way of life. If this is a society where they can all scream “DEATH!” as they battle their opponents, Rohirric probably has a word that translates literally as “dark strength” but captures the idea of “persisting through hopelessness with grim determination.” And the keepers of the oath of Eorl absolutely have a term that translates as “pledge honor” and means “the special pride of having fulfilled a promise at great personal cost.”
But it’s an interesting thought exercise in all parts of Tolkien’s world. Elvish must have tons of specific nature words the other races don’t, like something that translates as “leaf song” and evokes the specific sound of wind rustling gently through the trees. Or beyond nature, maybe something that translates as “beautiful grief” and means the kind of pleasurable pain of revisiting old sadnesses. And Gimli has a khuzdul word that translates to “foreign home” and means the place that your people dwell when they are prevented from being in their true homeland. In Minas Tirith, having lived so long with Mordor literally right on their doorstep, they’ve made a word that translates as “defiant joy” and means “daring to live your life happily despite an ever present threat looming.” In the Shire, they have twelve different words for “butter” depending on the texture, fat content, color, etc.
I don’t know. To me it’s just kind of amusing to think about, and I bet others could come up with even better examples.

Just A Small Morsel, Please Sir AU AKA Constantine Would Like to Disappear Please
Batman is about to go toe to toe with another god, and he needs armor that will prevent another "lost in the time stream" incident.
So he consults JLD.
The decide that if he has a piece of a really, really powerful entity, then that entity's powers should think that they're protecting the entity and in turn, protect Bruce.
So Constantine draws a summoning circle, and is bullied into making an actual good offering to the being the circle is supposed to summon. They include a note; it's written in an old, ancient language, but with JLD working together they figure out roughly what it says; something about requesting a piece of the most powerful being's belongings to grant them protection.
Thus, the ritual begins! The lights dim; cold green fog emanates from the summoning circle, the feeling of dread almost overwhelms the lessor experienced.
And then in the middle of John's chant, the ritual is forcibly stopped from the other side.
The offerings remain.
A single note floats down on top of the pile.
'I'm uh...flattered? But like, it's kinda weird to ask for someone's hair. Gonna have to turn this one down, sorry. No kinkshaming, though! I also won't tell anyone else what that kink is, Constantine, don't worry; I got ur back. Anyways stop the creepy hitting on me.
Danny'
Apparently, JLD had not correctly translated the language.
It's direct Translation, once they had that key provided to them by Danny, which once they got that they were able to figure out that one key letter was not what they thought, was more along the lines of;
'Oh Great High King, We Request A Small Parcel, A Small Snippet, Of Your Luxurious Hair. Just For A Little Bit. We Need To Use It For Personal Reasons. Just A Small Morsel. Thank You For Being Pretty. And Amazing. We Just Want A Small Piece. That Is All We Need. It Does Not Take Much. We Are Very Eager. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please.'
Needless to say, multiple heroes have to stop Constantine from trying to throw himself out of an airlock.

Sekiro scenery [6/?] 馨し水蓮 / Lotus of the Palace A white lotus flower found blooming in the depths of the Sunken Valley, where the Fountainhead Waters pool deeply. The flower's aroma attracts female apes. Thus the Guardian Ape carefully tended to it, so as to offer it to his bride. One of the incense ingredient sought by the Divine Heir for Immortal Severance.

it’s a small thing, but while I was working on the Transmogrification Explained Part 2 I caught something that I thought was interesting enough to share.
At this point (see below) at the end of the finale, after the ceremony, all the housemates go into the fancy room and Nandor says something about playing Parcheesi right before he takes a brief moment to comfort Guillermo the tiniest bit.
Tumblr media
Right afterwards however, instead of doing as he said he would and follow everyone else into the fancy room, he heads right, down the hallway, most likely going straight to his room.
Tumblr media
All the nonchalance and dismissal and ‘hey, let's pretend everything is fine and back to normal now!’ talk is a feint. Nandor doesn’t go into the fancy room to take comfort with the group and deny that anything important happened, and since he told Guillermo to clean up Derek before sunrise (something I thought was odd at the time because why would it matter if Guillermo left it until sunrise when everyone would be asleep anyways), he knows Guillermo won’t follow him.
Nandor is choosing to be alone after all this. It’s a very neat little character bit that is easily overlooked within the noise of the episode. While the tone at the end of the ceremony looks like everyone is moving back to square one and blatantly ignoring the seriousness of the situation to do something as banal as a board game, the actual actions of the characters show that there really is devastation amongst them. Guillermo’s obvious, but Nandor’s is hidden with a line that distracts us from noticing that he actually retreats from everyone and hides away.
It really makes me wonder what Nandor did after everything. Used the time to get himself ready for bed so Guillermo couldn’t wouldn’t have to do it when he got back? Sulked? Had a tantrum? Went into his treasure room to read Guillermo’s thank you card again and again?
oh and another little thing: Guillermo and Nandor are the only ones who still have their robes on after the ceremony, and actually end the scene still in them. All the other characters almost immediately took them off after the lights went on.
having them the only two that still wear the robes feels so significant to me. like they’re still in this ritual between them. Or, if the bondage rope part of it comes into play, they are still tied to each other. There’s definitely something to be read here, with both Nandor keeping the rope-cape on and pretending like he was going to follow the others but going to his room instead. Whatever it is, one thing’s for certain to me: Nandor is Not Okay after the ceremony.

why did i just see a noahpinion tweet with 30k likes try to claim the chinese social credit system was a thing. i thought we were done with this
All in favor of pointing and laughing at Noah (☝️🤣) but tbh not a fan of how "social credit isn't a thing at all" has become the standard talking point among anglo pro-china people bc. It is a thing. The reason these takes are ridiculous is bc they're acting like it's targeted towards individuals & some black mirror individual scoring system shit that controls the lives of individuals, when in reality it 1) does actually exist 2) is primarily targeted towards businesses (hence why "man on the street" interviews with people tend to show normal ppl in China don't really know about it) & 3) is actually cool and good
