Gray’s Papaya, NYC
That picture says it all.
Not much more needs to be written about the magic of Gray’s Papaya; their last remaining stand is on the corner of Broadway and West 72nd St., and you can’t help but be pulled in by the glow of their lights and smell of grilling hot dogs if you’re in the area. Popped in last week after a night of drinking with some old friends...
The one thing that has changed though is the prices. When I moved to NYC in 1996, their “Recession Special” was two dogs with the toppings of your choice and a drink for $1.99. Now? It was $4.95 for one dog and a drink...
As always, I went with their namesake, of course...
And as always, it was delicious! The frankfurter was perfectly grilled to get that snap you expect, slathered with onion sauce and a touch of mustard, both still free.
They do charge for other toppings now, though...
(Look, I love mayonnaise, but who puts it on a hot dog? And for fifty cents?!)
Three dogs and a drink will set you back $9.95, which isn’t too bad in the grand scheme of things here in Manhattan, but I can’t help but think back to “the good ‘ol days” whenever I eat here these days.
Putting current prices aside, Gray’s Papaya is a Big Apple institution and can’t be missed when you’re on the Upper West Side. A true taste of New York!

I’m straddling my road bike, carrying two boxes of Chinese dumplings in a paper tote. The DoorDash app tells me I need to sprint my payload across Manhattan – cutting across the Holland Tunnel’s on-ramp – in the next eight minutes.
I’m trying out food delivery under New York City’s new minimum wage law on a frigid December afternoon. Before – I was a part-time delivery worker between 2018 and 2020 – an order like this would have paid just a few dollars, making it a frantic rush to finish and move on to the next one. Now the new rules guarantee delivery workers nearly $30 an hour of “trip time”. So I stop at red lights, yield to pedestrians, and though I end up arriving a couple minutes late, I feel surprisingly relaxed. My customer seems pleased, too.
But the delivery bosses are already trying to reassert their dominance. Since the law took effect, delivery apps have made it harder for customers to tip. Previously, apps like DoorDash would ask customers to tip their couriers when placing orders, allowing workers to see the total amount before agreeing to take the job. Now, Uber and DoorDash have stopped prompting customers before checkout, and those that still choose to tip can only do so after the delivery has been made, through a button that can be difficult to find.

100's of bankers are now outside the Citi HQ, locked out of their workplace.
Climate Activists are standing arm-in-arm with our partners, blockading every single door.
Citibank are the top financier of oil and gas in the Amazon and the second largest funders of all fossil fuels.
These bankers are climate criminals. They deserve not a moment of peace.

Meet Bernard Weiselberg, a champion watermelon-eater. In 1935, the 5-year-old had defeated all other contestants under age 10 in not just a watermelon-eating contest but a pie-eating contest, too.
A year later, the 6-year-old Brooklyn boy took the pie title once again in a spectacle The NY Times found difficult to ignore. "Champion Bernard Weiselberg … Smears Rivals and Self," read one headline. "His Technique Flawless," read another. And finally: "Midget Conqueror of Big Cherry Confection Poses for His Picture Between Bites." The young champion asked The Times to call him "Wallace Beery Jr."—a sign of reverence for his favorite actor. "This whim is usually gratified because his record commands respect," The Times noted.
