I think that NPMD is actually so tragic, like these poor kids wanted to stop being bullied at school so badly and because of AN ACCIDENT they end up being killed and haunted. Like even though the ending is super upbeat, the implication that Pete has to go about his life knowing his two best friends were murdered. Steph, Pete and Grace have got to be traumatized because of the summoning because I refuse to believe that didn’t leave any sequels to their mental health, not to mention Grace straight up becoming obsessed with the power the Lords in black give her… but like, that won’t end well at all….
Idk i think it’s really really tragic like, the contrast between Bully the Bully and Bury the Bully?! It showcases how tragic it is that AN ACCIDENT set all of it in motion

i think part of why npmd works so well is bc the nerdy prudes are all kinda real af??? like... i dressed just like pete in highschool and have pictures to prove it. for better or for worse, watching richie in certain scenes was like fondly cringing at my past self. ruth's reflexive "don't bully me!" and their collective tendency to assume the worst whenever the popular kids talk to them (and the realisation that not all of them are bad, actually, some of them - like steph - are really cool)... god. it's so real. painfully so, at times

In an alternate universe, Nerdy Prudes was first and everyone’s currently freaking out about where the fuck Pete and steph were during the apotheosis

NPMD subverted a common trope. Even though it wasn't that serious it was still very refreshing.
It isn't much of a spoiler so I won't use a cut.
When Steph is inviting Pete to help her study, and Ruth and Richie are bothering Pete, he yells "these two fucking nerds that won't leave me alone" and Steph offers for him to "ditch the nerds" to help her.
In any other coming of age movie, this would make Ruth and Richie feel upset and betrayed, and they would probably distance themselves. Instead, they encourage him to go for it anyway.
It isn't even that big of a deal. It's just kind of a refreshing change to that kind of trope.

page one of the (very short) max jagerman redemption comic with richie. bonus points if you can figure out where the dialogue is from !
i didn’t give richie the trademark terrifying jon matteson blue eyes because he doesn’t deserve that
