alright. ossan's love has returned. time to watch and comment on this mess (derogatory & affectionate.)

for background: ossan's love was the first gay romcom to be aired on japanese mainstream tv, becoming an unexpected hit. it's wacky, it's stupid, it's chaotic, it's ridiculous, but it's also surprisingly heartfelt and did a lot for queer representation. if you can't handle ossan's love at its most chaotic (derogatory) you don't deserve it at its most chaotic (affectionate). i kinda love this show, but i kinda wouldn't recommend it to anyone haha. and now it has returned, with the original cast.

verdict: genuinely loved it! the jokes are funny, the housekeeper situation is weird as hell but kinda brilliant. i like that maki & haruta are facing the same everyday problems many couples face with work, stress, time management etc. it seems to be gaga for those of you who don't speak japanese (i haven't seen the subs so i can't comment on them), but i don't know how well the humour translates if you aren't familiar with japanaese language or this genre of comedy, so i recommend it with reservations. it's a completely new story so you don't need to have watched the first season necessarily.

Sawamura Daichi: Bisexual with the slightest female preference. Obviously he somewhat likes girls already in canon (The Kiyoko hand holding scene anyone???) And he just seems like the kind of man who could fall in love with another man if he found the right one. (cough*KUROO*cough). I could also see him being a straight but supportive ally as well.

Sugawara Koushi: Pansexual. He just gives off the vibe of not caring at all about the gender of his partner. He just wants to give love and receive just as much love right back.

Azumane Asahi: Pansexual. I am honestly not quite sure why I headcanon him as such, it just feels RIGHT for some reason.

Nishinoya Yuu: Pansexual. Similarly to Sugawara, I feel like Nishinoya cares little about the gender of his partner, my man just trying to be in a relationship without blowing a fuse from embarrassment every five seconds.

Tanaka Ryuunosuke: Bisexual with a heavy female preference. Obviously Tanaka likes girls, crush and eventual relationship with Kiyoko notwithstanding, he'll take any girl that gives him the time of day. But Tanaka/Noya and Ennoshita/Tanaka have my heart in a headlock so yeah self explanatory.

Ennoshita Chikara: Bisexual with no preference. He's definitely had crushes on girls, hell he's had a tiny puppy crush on Kiyoko at one point. But then he sees Kinoshita Hisashi for the first time and goes "huh so this is what going to heaven feels like–"

Kinoshita Hisashi: Gay. Look my Kinoshita Hisashi profile picture in the eyes and tell me you think he would like anything but men. Narita unintentionally has his heart in a death grip.

Narita Kazuhito: Bisexual with a slight male preference. I feel like Narita has had crushes on and even dated girls when he was younger. Then he met Ennoshita and Kinoshita in his first year and his brain took a swan dive into LGBT territory. He's had a small crush on Ennoshita that lasted like a week, then he saw Kinoshita laughing without restraint for the first time, and he hasn't had another crush since.

Kageyama Tobio: Bisexual with no preference. Contrary to popular belief, I think that Kageyama has the capacity to crush on girls. Not even his "volleyball is life" brain can deny Kiyoko's beauty. But his relationship with Hinata is where the capacity to love boys come from.

Hinata Shoyo: Pansexual. Loves anyone and anything that gives him the time of day. His heart is very big.

Tsukishima Kei: Aromantic Asexual. I just don't see him liking anyone at all. He just wants to survive high school and play volleyball that's literally it. The only person on the team who is immune to Kiyoko's beauty.

Yamaguchi Tadashi: Pansexual. Similarly to Hinata, I see him as having a lot of love to give.

Shimizu Kiyoko: Straight Asexual. Eheh. I'm definitely getting canceled for this... But I just don't see her as being interested in girls at all. Her and Tanaka have a special place in my heart. As for the asexual part, purely vibes.

hi everyone!! it’s officially holiday season at starbucks, and that prompted me to make these headcanons. i was also missing being a barista :(( so without further ado, here is what the haikyuu characters would order at starbucks!!

Karasuno:

daichi: grande pike with sweet cream. he likes plain coffee, but needs a little bit of sweetness and cream to curb the acidity.

suga: mint majesty over ice. it’s super refreshing, just like him, plus the colour is cute ✨

asahi: he’s an autumn hoe, so a pumpkin spice latte when available; vanilla hazelnut latte any time else. he is a latte lover.

nishinoya: caramel frap w/extra caramel, aka a blended drink that’s pure sugar with a dash of caffeine. LOVES the sweet drinks.

tanaka: grande nitro cold brew, but he can’t handle it plain so he gets classic and vanilla sweet cream cold foam.

ennoshita: tall americano. what? it helps him live out his dream of being a film director 😫

kinoshita: boy has a peanut allergy so he’s careful of what he orders; gets an iced peach green tea cos he genuinely likes it, and so he doesn’t die.

narita: asks the baristas to surprise him most times, but when he wants something familiar, he’ll get a pistachio latte; hot or iced depending on the weather.

kageyama: this mans has absolutely ZERO idea what to order, how to ask what to order, hell, what he’s actually doing in a starbucks in the first place. he’ll ask the barista to make him something, and he’ll actually end up liking it. but he doesn’t know what the drink is, so it’s a pain when the barista who made him the drink isn’t there that day.

hinata: mango dragon drink!! he loves the colour and the fruity flavour :)) and when it’s cold, he’ll get a hot cocoa :))

tsukishima: trenta iced coffee. black. on days he’s not being a hardass, he’ll get salted caramel cold foam on top. but don’t be fooled, that cold foam will have more sugar than legally allowed.

yamaguchi: strawberry frappuccinos!! he loves the pink from the strawberry, and it’s also a plus because coffee upsets his tummy :(

kiyoko: tall blonde roast on a regular day, but a grande medicine ball on her workout mornings.

yachi: now this girl can handle some major caffeine. will get a venti brown sugar oat milk shaken espresso, but make sure to add an additional two shots. yes, she will be jittery if she hasn’t had one in a while, but doesn’t care; she likes the espresso too much. also likes kiwi starfruit refreshers.

ukai: gets a grande pike to be all manly, but he can’t actually handle coffee. gives it to takeda. will then order a grande blonde latte with a million pumps of vanilla and at a lower temperature and try to write it off as “not wanting to have a black coffee today”

takeda: the grande pike that ukai couldn’t handle. truly doesn’t understand how he can’t take black coffee…

alright so I'mma drop some science on y'all

the Academy is ~2100 years old as of 2001. Renji, Kira, and Momo, were in the 2066th Class, graduating ~1956/1957. it's also repeatedly stated to be 2000 years old in CFYOW. Bleach takes place mostly in 2001, so that'd be 2101/2100 years as of then

when the Academy started running, Shinigami are already Shinigami, not Balancers, and Bankai are already Bankai, not Shinuchi, and we know this because Sasakibe has had Bankai for 2,000 years

QED the Gotei 13 already existed when the Academy was established, because you don't train new people for something that doesn't exist yet and won't exist for a thousand years as that just doesn't make any sense at all

for Shinigami to become Shinigami and not Balancers, they probably had to gain zanpakutō, because before then they were only using Zankensoki

we can therefore assign some arbitrary dates to the creation of these things for illustrative purposes like the Gotei 13 was founded 2,500 years ago and the zanpakutō was invented 3,000 years ago

Yamamoto is talking about his last use of Bankai being in the distant past, and Shunsui is a kid. we straight up know Shunsui and Jūshirō are the first Captains out of the Academy because Yamamoto tells us:

so it doesn't make any sense at all that Yamamoto is saying this after the war with Lichtreich, because then he'd be missing Captains for centuries. no, Yamamoto is telling this story to Shunsui long before the war with Lichtreich, which we know from the Kaiser Gesang must have happened in 1004 AD, over 1,100 years after the Academy was established. and so we come to this:

Yhwach is visually recalling the Gotei 13 he fought, the individuals he personally saw

however Yhwach is verbally discussing the Gotei 13 as an institution

do you notice something? these two things are not explicitly correlated

if I told you "The U.S. Navy has always been tenacious and resourceful," and I said that while showing pictures of Commodore Matthew C. Perry, or Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, would that automatically mean Perry and Nimitz were around in 1775 and fought alongside John Paul Jones?

this neatly solves the "Original Gotei 13 Problem". maybe the OG Gotei 13 weren't around for 1,000 years, or even for 1,500 years or more. maybe the Gotei 13 that Yhwach fought were the originals, which would be confusing as to why they lasted so long when their successors did not

but maybe they weren't

Yhwach is not weighing in on that issue, he's just saying the Gotei 13 were always murderous bastards until the Lichtreich War

we know from Narita and Matsubara in CFYOW that Kubo has a lot of supposedly interesting stories that he's never told, like how Yoruichi and Kisuke met. you should not presume that all events referenced in the series refer to other things you already know about, and that all events of importance have been covered (Tokinada and the Tsunayashiro being shoehorned into the narrative is also yet more proof of this)

Returned from America!

Holy fuck I am never flying ever again in economy. My legs are literally too long to sit straight on some planes. I can't do that, the pain of flying that many hours with my muscles tightening and no way to relax them? Oh fuck that.

Things learned: American Airlines decided my veggie meal meant vegan halal at some point. So that was a thing that happened. And I had the worst hummus of my life, it tasted like gasoline.

American Airlines remembered to load the baby meal! Except my baby refused to eat it. My husband tasted it and said it tasted bad. I tasted it, and it was rancid. And old. Thankfully I had baby crackers to hold the baby over until we got home. I'm not impressed with American Airlines, and won't be flying with them again if I can avoid it.

Narita airport is worse than Haneda. You have to leave security to go to different buildings and terminals. Security is fast, but it's annoying. They have a bus between terminals, but there's no room for luggage carts. So we walked the ten minutes. Narita doesn't have the baby stroller luggage carts. I'm thinking whoever designed Haneda had traveled with a baby, because that airport is baby friendly in ways no other airport is.

Customs in Japan gave no fucks once they saw me write my address in Japan. So at least I didn't have to open my luggage.

Jetstar Japan is still the worst airline ever. No car seats allowed. Took twenty minutes to check in the luggage. They kept asking what my return address in the US was, and almost refused to believe that I lived in Japan. Fuck them, racist assholes.

Baby is jet lagged to all hell, I have a head cold and can't take meds because they all say so not use if breastfeeding.

But I'm happy to be home, in my own bed, with clean clothes, and my own house to cook snacks and tea in.

Thank fuck I bought a shit ton of tea to bring back.

Unfortunately, because of all the books, I could not bring back as many snacks as I wanted. Oh well, yay books!

Lot's of good shows this season; Both sequels and new ones. It's also the first season in a while where I didn't drop any shows. That's more praise than I can give previous seasons to be honest.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Swordsmith Village Arc - (7.5/10)

Despite the still lavish productions, (and a season where I didn't have to listen to Zenitsu's annoying wails) this was a letdown of season. Especially given how The Entertainment District ended off. This arc getting the movie treatment would've benefited it a lot better. Episode 8 was the highlight by a mile.

Ranking of Kings: The Treasure Chest of Courage - (7/10)

Boji and Kage best partners. Not much to say about this season since it was mostly side stories getting animated. Last episode left a lot of excitement for future installments of the series and I hope Wit continues to give it the same love and care.

Vinland Saga Season Two - (10/10)

Calling Vinland Saga S2 a masterpiece of anime would be underselling it greatly. It's been a while since I've seen a cast of well written character go through so much growth and development over an arc. Anything more I could say would just be reiterating what other's have been saying for the past 6 months. Vinland Saga is good y'all.

The Ancient Magus Bride Season 2 - (7/10)

Mahoyome came back with a new director, new studio and many many, many new characters. While there wasn't much plot this season, the world-building and new relationships were explored and developed very well. Good thing the second part of this is already confirmed for later this year, otherwise this score would be a lower. Here's hoping the animation also improves. I know were not at Wit anymore but..

Magical Destroyers - (5/10)

Wathced this because the OP & ED were really good. Turns out it was the only good thing about it.

Also Pink-chan. Pink-chan was good.

Heavenly Delusion - (8/10)

One of the best animated seasonal show's since Mob Psycho. Dystopian settings are some of my favorite in the media so I was always excited to watch this every Saturday. Unfortunately, time and time again, it left me with more questions and rarely gave answers. And the last two episodes were...enough for me to drop this down from a 9 to an 8. Another Spring show with a strong contender for Opening of the Year.

My Love Story with Yamada-kun at Lv999 - (9/10)

I've been craving a good romcom and this one delivered and then some. Morio Asaka is a talented director and his vision and directorial quirks really helped elevate this source material greatly. Akane is a disaster child and I will protect her from any harm (and alcohol). Really considering picking up the manga if a season 2 isn't gonna be announced.

Dead Mount Death Play - (7.5/10)

Narita is back and doing what he does best; Balancing a dozen or so characters in a convoluted plot that revolves around a mysterious prefecture. This time, with a reverse isekai twist involved. Excited for the second cour of this.

Oshi no Ko - (9/10)

I don't know how to describe my feelings on this show other than I loved every bit of it. Very excited for the second season and I hope the returning staff continue what they've been doing so far.

Next arc looks very very fun

MASHLE - (7/10)

The adaption played it very safe and didn't go far beyond what was given to them which- for the most part -worked well enough for them. Obviously not gonna have the same staying power surrounding it like OPM and Black Clover, but it was entertaining and that's good enough.

Jigokuraku - (Hell's Paradise) - 5.5/10

I was very disappointed with this adaption, if the score wasn't an enough of an indicator. MAPPA taking on so much titles is a bit of meme at this point but it sucks that an adaption I was greatly looking forward to came out this chopped and poorly-animated. Kaori Makita is a talented director so it's a shame that she was saddled to a show with an unreasonable deadline and limited staff to help her out. I wanna cope and say s2 will be better but I know better..

Only consolation I have is that this show was sacrificed so JJK and AOT will look good.

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury S2 - (8/10)

Didn't agree with everything that happened this season. And I think the writers just didn't know what to with Miorine after she was separated from Suletta. That being said, the last few episodes (when they finally did get reunited) were very very good. Also a fantastic finale episode. Glad this was the first Gundam anime I watched to completion. Now I patiently wait for the Sulemio wedding OVA.

The wasted potential. Oh my fucking god. Fullbring Arc was so rushed and unfinished that we had to wait for Ryogo Narita (blessed be his name) to swoop in with CFYOW and give us SOME type of substance and motivation for Ginjo.

...Also livid over his bankai form. What the hell is this?? Why does he have fur pants?? Give him the skeleton garter and thigh highs back if you aren’t gonna act right, wtf.

favorite line:

The bar scene, where Ginjo is drunk as hell and trying to convince Giriko to let him keep going and then telling Riruka that she needs to go home because it’s late.

The english dub with Travis Willingham was superb in this scene, just goin’ full loser dad mode.

There’s absolutely gotta be this deeper story between Ginjo and Giriko, hence why Giriko is so loyal to him throughout everything. We saw some teases of them being buds in the BBS birthday scenes (which I guess they don’t do anymore because this game is god awful) and I just think it’d be cool to see more.

OTP:

...Also Grimmjow. Both because I can’t see Ginjo being romantic or vulnerable with anyone to have a proper relationship and it’s basically the same with Grimmjow.

Aside from how they would get along great outside of that dynamic, I think they would click well having this Unnamed Thing together. FWB who also fight and drink heavily together.

Geeeehhhhhhhkkkkk you really don’t see many canon x canon Ginjo ships since he isn’t that popular of a character, but my block-on-site is GinTsuki. I’ve said it before in previous questions for this ask meme, but I put hard-stop on Adoptive Parent/Adoptee or Older Mentor/Child Student ships; GinTsuki is especially in that for me since it’s canon that Ginjo took in and raised Tsukishima since he was a young child. So it’s very much not for me and it squicks me out badly.

Checking the Fate/strange fake TV special again, and that PV from 2019 again, and wow, yep, two hours later and it’s still surreal that these are characters written by Narita who are speaking audible words against mainstream J-Pop music for a megafranchise with more fans and money that any original Narita IP could ever conceive of.

Narita characters...who are speaking and will in two months be speaking dialogue Narita has written for light novels he has published. Narita’s name in huge typeface for a TV special which may or may not be a prelude for a summer anime that mainstream audiences are going to care about.

The TV special teaser is frankly underwhelming only because the first two thirds of it is just a build-up list of Fate anime until now (2004...F/sn! 2010...title! 2012...title etc.!), except of course it’s building up to, this, “the next Fate,” Fate/strange fake, and that, I concede, is hyping F/sf up. It is treating F/sf like a big deal, or at least worthy enough to be included in the line-up of all those other notable Fate entries. 

I can see why people think it’s portending a summer TV anime. Sawano as composer, teaser as self-important for a self-important franchise...what I’m getting at is... The teaser is treating F/sf like such a big deal in a way that Baccano! never quite got (and, hell, Durarara!! was popular enough, but just...not this popular), so it leaves me with slight bittersweet wistfulness over what could have been with Baccano!

“Wow...  Imagine a 2023 twentieth anniversary Baccano! anime treating the source material with this much magnitude. wheeze”

(No, hype and magnitude never guarantee the actual product will be well-executed, but c’mon, it’s not worth being spitefully pessimistic when what the hell, that’s Narita being treated like a big deal right there.)

first, a celebration

I've decided, against my better judgment and at the horrible enableationing of a certain @ezzydean, to write and post 365 ficlets this year, again. I've got a nifty little spreadsheet to keep track and everything. Each one of these will be a different sort of funness. Some will be ceated using the random fic generator I made a while back. Some will have to do with specific numbers or prompts. I'm not promising to post every single day, but I will have 365 by the end of the year. This one in particular is *apparently* the poly karasuno bug coming back to bite me once more, so enjoy!

"God damn you, you stupid motherfucking cunt waffle!"

Asahi smiled, not even bothering to open his eyes as the melody of profanity drifted through the house. It was a beautiful sound, the sound of his love and all the happiness she could bring to his life. There was a long pause of silence, long enough that Asahi could fully wake up and realize just how big and empty their bed was.

When she started shouting again, he grinned and threw the covers off.

"What are you cursing at today?" he asked, padding up behind her and wrapping his arms around her waist. He had to stoop to bury his nose in her soft black hair, but it was worth it for the scent of her floral shampoo and the way she leaned back against him with a happy little hum.

"These morons don't know how to play," she groused, and clicked away at her controller some more.

"Why are you playing standing up, you weirdo?" he laughed, and she just shook her head.

"Gotta concentrate," she said, and then immediately shouted, "You fucking piss ant, my grandma could play better than that and she's fucking dead!"

Asahi shook his head with a chuckle and padded off to find himself some coffee. When she finished her round, she shut down the console and followed him into the kitchen.

"Happy birthday," she said, her voice soft and melodious as it always had been. She stepped up behind him, copying the pose he'd used a moment before, and nuzzling between his shoulder blades.

"Thank you, Kiyoko," he said. He patted at her hand until she let him turn around, but she never removed her arms from his waist. "What time does the chaos start?" he asked.

"I told the others to be here around noon, so any time between an hour ago and six this evening," she said. He laughed again, just in time with the pounding of fists on the door. She hummed, swatted him on the ass, then swiped his coffee cup from the counter and nodded toward the door. "Well?" she taunted. "Go on. You know they won't wait for long. They love you too much for that." There was a double meaning in that, but Asahi ignored it for the time being.

"Brat," he laughed, and went to face his fate. As he opened the door and several members of the old Karasuno team tumbled in in a pile, he couldn't help but think that this right here was exactly how he wanted it.

"Asahi-san!" Nishinoya shouted from his spot on the top of the heap. "What the hell are you still doing in your pajamas?"

"Well, Noya, I just woke up, having spent the morning of my birthday lounging in bed, but a certain group of miscreants decided to interrupt me," Asahi huffed, and Nishinoya grinned up at him.

"I don't think they know what the word 'miscreants' even means," Tsukishima drawled. He was the only one who had avoided the pile, and he stood with his hip leaning against the doorway and his arms crossed and a smile on his face.

"Probably not," Asahi agreed, and hauled Nishinoya out of the doorway so that the others could start standing. He counted six: Nishinoya and Tsukishima, Tanaka, Hinata, Kageyama, and buried all the way at the bottom where Asahi hadn't even seen him, Kinoshita, who turned and glowered at Kageyama as soon as he was freed. "Are the others coming here, or are we meeting them?" Asahi asked.

"Daichi-san and Suga-san said they were coming here, but Yamaguchi and Narita-san are picking Yacchan up and meeting us at the shrine," Hinata chirped in answer. Asahi glanced at the clock on the stove and nodded.

"We should probably get going as soon as Daichi and Suga get here, then, to make sure Tadashi and Kazuhito don't break anything," he said.

"You gonna go in your boxers?" Tanaka asked with a waggle of his eyebrows. Asahi glanced down at himself and hummed.

"I would, but you know how I feel about free shows," he answered, turning down the hall to the sound of Tanaka choking on his own laughter. Kiyoko met him in the bedroom, leaning up on her toes to press a kiss to his cheek.

"Are you going to do it this year?" she asked.

"We'll see how the shrine visit goes," he answered. She nodded.

"I'm with you either way."

"I know."

Suga and Daichi were just arriving when Asahi emerged, dressed this time. Suga hadn't removed any of his layers, but at the sight of Asahi coming down the hall, Daichi groaned and started pulling his coat back on.

"Do we have everyone?" Suga asked. "Who's got the child leashes today?"

"It's my birthday, so not me," Asahi said serenely.

"I lived in a foreign country for--"

"Two years, we know, Shouyou," Nishinoya interrupted. "I've set foot on six different continents. It's not gonna stop them from trying."

"You're both so small. We just don't want to lose you in the crowds!" There was absolute innocence in Suga's voice, but they all knew by then not to trust that. Hinata just rolled his eyes and stomped out the front door.

As Asahi walked through the streets toward the nearest shrine, he turned the same thought over and over in his head like a shiny stone. Kiyoko held one of his hands, muttering obscenities under her breath as they walked arm-in-arm, but the other hand was swinging back and forth in Suga's grip. Kinoshita had Noya in a piggyback hold, while Hinata tried to cajole Tsukishima into the same. Tanaka and Daichi were talking in soft tones at the front of the group.

"You know," Suga said, quiet enough that Asahi could pretend not to hear, if he wanted, "It doesn't need to fit in a box. It doesn't need a label that anyone else understands. If it works, it works, and that's all that matters."

Asahi hummed, squeezing his hand. They were just coming up to the shrine, their missing three waiting for them at the bottom of the steps. Asahi took a deep breath of the cold air and looked around at all of them, chattering and laughing and swearing and hanging off of one another, moving in a synchronized orbit like they had for years now. Suga was right, he thought, and smiled. What did it matter what anyone else thought, when he had this? Good fortune was already his, and had been all along. He just had to reach out and take it.

So he did.
