What if i went back in time and smashed your gamecube. What would your childhood game collection look like then?

#ask #anon #anon i grew up with the n64 #so like. not much different? i wouldnt have TTYD or Sunshine or Luigis Mansion #but like. around the time of the gamecube. my family had the n64. ps1. ps2. #id still have played battle for bikini bottom because i had it on PS2 first #we also had a few other consoles but i dont have a proper memory of which my brothers owned. were sold. or were borrowed #because we had a dreamcast. i played sonic adventure 1 (appearently got to the casino. i remember the ring shaker) #we had an SNES at one point. played mario world and donkey kong country 1 #we had a sega genesis momentarily before we moved around the time i was 5 #i remember playing aladin. mortal kombat (dont know which one) and a garfield 2D platformer that had a haunted mansion level #or something #but the dreamcast. genesis and... maybe the snes. we had those before the gamecube #with the n64 my main games were mario 64. banjo kazooie. and banjo tooie. and mario kart and mario party 2 #ive still got almost all of my old n64 games. im missing my copy of toy story 2 and smash 64 #my brothers owned metroid prime 1 & 2 for the gamecube so. i wouldnt have had that i guess. #iirc i got the gamecube for easter one year. i say iirc because i remember specifically getting Mario Sunshine #and the gamecube mightve been paired with it but i was specifically excited for mario sunshine #i woke up to follow like. a trail of starburst into the basement (its our secondary living room) to find the game and console... i think #so i forever associate Sunshine with starburst. idk if it was intentional or not. #starburst fits really well for the few times that colourful goop pattern is used. like at the very start of the game #anyway anon you couldve just asked what wouldve happened if i didnt have a gamecube. no need for the violence. #also the gamecube itself plays a very small role in my childhood. like in comparison to the PS2 games that came and went in my household #anyway. thank you anon for the ask. i think.

I was playing around with my niece yesterday, when she mentioned that she'd like to play some Switch with me, I said sure, what's up, she said Smash Ultimate, because she's been practicing. Then she asked me if I've played that game, I said no, so she was like it's ok I'll teach you hehehe you can learn from losing! Anyways I cook this child alive and she calls me a liar, and I simply inform her that I have more hours in N64 Smash and Melee than she's been alive. She has no idea what those are. Then she wants to play Mario Kart 8, asks me if I've played Mario Kart 8, I say no, she gets a bit smug 'cause she's really good, she says, and I cook this child alive again, and she calls me a double liar, and I just tell her that I played Mario Kart 64 religiously for most of my formative years and I still play it nowadays in fact. She keeps asking me what the fuck is a 64 and I Sanae-face hard enough to forget to hold back and obliterate her to the Shadow Realm in the subsequent race.

Then I played some Elden Ring and she wanted me to explain the story and what the game was about, and got really invested in the schools of magic (I was running Giant's Flame Strength Faith), and kept asking me Why Did You Kill That Guy What's The Lore for every person I killed like some sort of fiscal Saint Peter. Anyways I love my niece.

The Yona Rant.

Some people will say that this game came out months ago already, and everybody is over it, and even kinda like her now, and to that I answer 

First of all, I would like to remind you, reader, of the old texts. *blows into the sacred n64 oot cartridge* 

The Zora royal line have proven itself to be very obviously Linksexual. If you haven’t played, Ruto proclaims herself Link’s fiancée, the spiritual stone of water being a litteral engagement ring. It is clearly brought into BOTW, with Mipha actively making him an engagement present according to current Zora tradition.

Sidenote: Link accept both gifts, and as the player you never get to clear it up or refuse. Make it what you will. 

Why am I mentioning this? 

She’s Link’s Zora-sona.

(((If you want to bring gender into this, BORING. Link is canonically nonbinary. (neither male of female, able to be related to by anybody, those are things expressed multiple times by the creators))))

Everything about her that is different from the other Zoras is intended to be Link-like. 

The way she has the droopy sleeves instead of the shoulderpads 

The purple ribbon cutting into her silhouette in the same way the straps of his outfit do

The golden jewelry instead of Domain Silver

The horns simulating the spiky Hylian ears

Her head-tail is smaller and pointy, way closer to the shape of the classic hat

GREEN. A specific shade.

She is the PEAK of Zora beauty standard, how silly of you to judge her with your human beauty standards. Yona is a bimbo, a barbie, everything hot under the sea. Literally evolved to be Link-like. She’s a trophy wife, a sex symbol, an idol. She has a dedicated Zora entourage simping for her.

Now, the way she suddenly shows up, without having being mentioned in BOTW… how do yall feel about surprises? I don’t think there would have been any moment in the game where it would have been natural for any Zora to bring her up, with the crisis happening, and the feelings about Mipha being so fresh to them. It made me feel like it was a world that was alive! Sidon is a hundred years old but you expect to meet everybody important to him in the first game he appears in? 

Also, I do think Yona’s existence was hinted, with Muzu there, and every other Zora looking like they could be Sidon’s sibling or child… I personally really felt like the Domain looked inbred in comparison. Was the only other option blue Mipha? Lame.

Can you imagine a young Muzu? Vibrant green, chibi-headed, Dorephan's very own "best friend". Come on.

What about not getting married at all?

The thing with kingdoms, is that it specifically depends on a royal line, especially in Hyrule where abilities are given from parent to children. There was always going to be a need for a Zora Queen at some point.

What was the other option, simply not meeting Yona? Not addressing it? How tragic to imagine her absence, a lonely King with an elderly father, no mother, no sister, just a monogamous mass of subjects. And Muzu.

No, there needed to be a fiancée, a weird Link-like gremlin, who was there to accept their love. I don't believe Sidlink could have a better happy ending than this, given nintendo.

Hey all, hope everyone's doing good. Thought I should give an update on my current perspective on things around here, as it's shifted for reasons I'll get into.

In a nutshell, I'm feeling better than before... but I also think it's time for me to semi-check out of current Sonic discussion.

By now, you all know that with the exception of Superstars and Dream Team - and Jimbotnik, because of course - I've not been enthusiastic about much of the current stuff. Whether that be the likelihood that they'll continue with a Frontiers direction, the SA2 milking that has made me more sick to death of its influence than I thought was possible, the Year of Shadow in general not being all that enticing if your top ten does not include him, IDW still causing the same repetitive back-and-forths with its characteristically terrible decisions and disproportionate praise from fans who don't actually buy the comic, various other bits and pieces that plant further Eggdad seeds into people's heads, a bunch of other stuff that I'm just apathetic about while everyone else goes crazy over them... it's not been a great time for me. I'm the Garfield, and the current direction is the Monday.

That would all be one thing, but as you may expect, it's the fandom that really irks me. I don't like how it's considered necessary to make every post a bestseller in order for your opinion to be seen as valid and insightful. I don't like how you're expected to not criticise something just because it's popular or "iconic". I don't like how everyone dedicates themselves to the same old lengthy discourse that will continue to not change anyone's minds either way, since the only people listening are the ones who already agreed with them. I don't like how you have Flynn/Archie/IDW stans on one side, and an increasingly common "Japan only, no one else should ever touch the series, also the Japanese fandom is the only one with good people in it, I was born in the wrong country uwu" mentality on the other side.

And... I don't like that I've brought these concerns up so many times before when I know it'll always fall on deaf ears. Why do I do this? Why do I bother? For the fandom, I guess. But if the fandom doesn't even respect me, if my words are always doomed to ring in an empty hallway, why should I bother?

While all this has been going on, the Paper Mario Thousand-Year Door remake has been on my mind quite a bit, as it has been for a lot of folk. As someone who has always loved TTYD, as well as the original N64 Paper Mario, I'm happy to report that I absolutely adore the remake, and quickly considered it a gold standard as far as faithful remakes go. :) There's a lot of reasons for that, but that's best for another time. Anyway, after a certain point, it occurred to me... hasn't it been a while since I've been able to just relax and join in on the hype for something? Hasn't it been a while since my opinion lined up with that of the majority? Hasn't it been a while since, regardless of not actually posting, I felt like I belonged somewhere, and wasn't being made to constantly feel like I'm worthless because I'm not an artist, animator, etc?

I think this is something I've been needing for a long time now. The irony of it coming from the bing bing wahoo man is not lost on me.

After how the past few years in the Sonic fandom have felt like a classroom more than anything, watching everyone repeat the same Why ___ Is Secretly Good/Bad three hour manifestos over and over, and flogging themselves for being Not-Japanese, can you see why the simple pleasures of "hehe Vivian :3" would appeal to me? Can you see why I'd prefer to unwind? I made a valiant effort, but now, I can't force myself to keep up with shit that I'm not passionate about for the sake of a community that doesn't care about what I have to say anyway. I need to find myself a place on here that I can be at ease with.

So what does this mean for my blog? Well, nothing too jarring, just that my focus may shift a little for the time being. Despite what all of the above may imply, I'm not turning in my Sonic badge. I still love the franchise, even if I'm not so fond of its overall current direction. And obviously, I still love Eggman, that'll never change. I'll still answer asks about the series, talk about things I like, reblog stuff I like, work on Stellar, spread Egg Propaganda, and so on. But unless I'm asked about them in certain contexts (ie: "how would you improve this character"?), I refuse to talk about IDW, Frontiers, or anything else whose contents and fandom circles cause me migraines.

Not because toxic positivity, but because after the joy of gushing over Vivian TTYD, and remembering the feeling of belonging, I can't do this again. I can't change Tails calling himself Wildly Inconsistent. I can't change The End being a nothingburger. I can't change Lanolin being an arsehole. I can't change Surge's shilling. I can't change how unprofessional the IDW crew is. I can't change what they're doing with Eggman, and various other characters. I can't change any of these things, no matter how much I or anyone else rants about them, and half the time, no one is seriously listening anyway. So many words for so little results. So I need to move on, stop wasting my time, and turn my attention on things that actually make me happy instead of just... deflated. Maybe if I do that, I can belong again. Maybe when the direction inevitably changes again in the future, it'll feel like it came faster.

So yeah. That's where I'm at now. I hope you guys can understand.

Headcanons + Stims below!

(Btw, the stims I put are ones I think that fit, but are also ones that I have since I know those the best. But I'd be happy to hear any other ideas!)

Stims:

• Hand shakes or twitching

• Chewing & clicking pens. Also tap, flips and shakes them in his hand

• Scratches arms & thighs. (especially when stressed)

• Holds/Messes with tail

• Paces around a lot, he cant sit in one space for long

• Clenches jaw fairly often

• Fidgets with any jewelry on him (rings bracelets and necklace)

Headcanons:

• Also uses the name Ciro

• He doesnt really mind what pronouns people use but they more prefer He/Him since thats Whole's. But they also uses They/Them, It/Its and even She/Her sometimes.

• Has a split pupil in the eye thats usually under his hair (its not that he hates it or anything, hes just emo)

• Likes turn based rpgs and bullet hell games. (Undertale, Deltarune, Octopath Traveler, Persona etc.)

• Also likes making things via legos, kandi, paracord, kniting, crocheting, anything really. Sometimes he'll make things for Soul and Heart and give it to them. Bros stubborn and embarrassed by it tho so he leaves it in their rooms or just throws it at them.

• While he does make fun of Heart for hating the light, Mind also hates the night, to the point where it has a fear of the dark. Your brain can sometimes see things in the dark that aren't there. So if they're in the dark for too long, he gets very very skittish and paranoid.

• In general she is also quite paranoid and over thinks a lot.

• Not only does he have his headaches, but neck pains as well as phantom limb pain

• Used to have full moth wings but after a fight with Heart, they were too torn up to use. He still has them, but they're small and he hides them under his jacket. (also why they rarely take its jacket off)

• His hair gets brighter if hes being more (rarely) emotional. (Happier, angrier, excited etc.) The rarer times when he gets startled, his hair goes off like a mini flashbang

• When his emotions are high enough, small sparks will shoot out from his hair

• Also if hes especially pissed off or depressed, it's voice will glitch and stutter way more (like some moments in like Storm and a Spring or TME)

• Has more moth traits but always tries to hide them. He has small antennas but hides them in his hair, has moth fluff on his neck but shaves it so it doesn't grow out etc. Also loves light like a moth but can control himself to not like...bang his head into a lamp post (unless hes like really tired or drunk or something? (heart once had a laser pointer and mind attack it like a cat))

• I dont have a set idea on how Heart went blind. But if it was Minds doing (especially if he used Souls trident), I could see Souls punishment resulting in Mind getting the robot limbs. That or Soul resulted in Mind needing the voice modulator.

• Has a tear on their sleeve from Hearts gunshot

• Cable tail that looks like a Nintendo 64 controller cable. Cause 1. Its an electric tail and 2. CJ (& me) likes LoZ Majoras Mask, which in an N64 game.

• Him and Heart are the same height but Soul is slightly taller. Heart doesn't mind it (nor can he tell) but Mind is slightly annoyed at that so he wears heels and heeled boots to be tall or as tall as Soul.

Hmmmmm I can’t say I remember specifically, but it was def something on the N64 at a friends house. If I had to guess it was probably Super Smash Bros 🤔

26. Least favorite environmental hazard (e.g. poison swamp, fire/lava, etc.)

Lava 100% 😤😤😤 Slowing effect if it isn’t an instakill, DoT as either part of the environment or when you’re in it, destruction of wooden equipment if the game has that feature, loss of items upon death, frequently has really odd hitboxes bc it’s liquidy, bright as hell, enemies usually also use flame attacks so you’re not free from the burning status even outside of the lava… would rather deal with with a poison swamp honestly…

33. Most embarrassing gaming moment.

Ough… after I platinumed sekiro, I was trying to get my friend who beat Elden ring interested in sekiro and LoP. I was using the Genichiro boss fight to show him some sekiro gameplay while I was explaining how LoP has a “good defense is the best offense” mentality while sekiro has a “good offense is the best defense” mentality, but bc I’m not good at multitasking like that I wasn’t paying attention to my health and died to some arrow shots… he was like “damn that looks really tough!” but inside I was like “no… you don’t understand… I OWN this man… I haven’t lost to Genny in 75 years…” I took that very personally…

#I’m mostly a single player gaymer so it’s kind of hard to remember too many embarrassing moments #aside from every single intro to a boss in a souls like but thats just your average cheek clapping compilation #that’s like the point of those games #I’m also not very good at shooters but bc I know I’m not good at shooters I’m not terribly embarrassed when I do badly in them #I guess there was also the time I was humbled at a smash bros tournament at my high school #but like I went to the same high school as Dan Salvato who is one of the best Link players in the world #also famously the dude who made Doki Doki Literature Club but in this context he’s just the guy who raised the bar for smash locally #ask game

Cigar of the Day: Rocky Patel White Label

This is Rocky Patel White Label from Esteli, Nicaragua, aged 10 years, Connecticut Shade Wrapper. Extra large, extra shiny, extra fancy band; Rocky wants us to believe this is a premium offering.

First taste makes me think of a camel wide; pretty mellow, little... bouncy?squishy? I don't know how to describe it. Like a big tasty springy mushroom. Bouquet makes me think of something being cured in a flu. Definitely enchanted forest vibes-- not creepy gothic enchanted forest so much as storybook-land. This would be the aroma of the Seven Dwarves if they were still allowed to smoke their pipes

I like Rocky but I feel like RP is incongruous to my aesthetic sometimes. This cigar makes me feel like I'm supposed to be getting ready for 9 holes of golf, then get ready to hit on the road for Foxwoods with the fella's, riding goombah style, guys in front, wives in back. That being said I'm not embarrassed to smoke Rocky ever.

Rocky Patel just makes so much, so many sticks across price barriers, geography, character, the identity should be diffused but I always feel like a Rocky tastes like a Rocky; for me there's definitely a Rocky Patel-TM experience,and generally I would say that experience is good.

Rocky Patel, and this cigar in particular, makes me think of the guys who watch football at Watch City Cigar. They wouldn't smoke this White Label during the evening but they would own this cigar and they would light it up at a little league playoff game. This flavor and aroma feels like a grass stain on a fresh baseball uniform, the feeling of nostalgic athleticism.

Almost halfway through I am again reminded of camel cigarettes, which is not a knock on it. This is like the Camel to Punch's Marlboro Red. The flavor echoes, resonating like sound in a sandy tomb open to the light, the temple level in Goldeneye 007 on N64 with all of the stone doors and chambers illuminated by light. I get imagery of beige, tan, khaki, limestone. This is a cigar meant to be enjoyed by a person who anticipates the need to remove grass stains from khakis.

The flavor profile has not evolved significantly in the second third. I will note that there have been no construction issues, it has burned evenly for about 40 minutes, halfway done right on schedule for a 6" 54 Ring Gauge stick. It has a great pull, really no technical issues at all.

I think I'll smoke this a little bit into the final third and then probably call it quits. I don't really think it's going anywhere. It has not significantly changed really since the very beginning. This is my experience with a lot of Rocky Patel cigars in the $10-20 range. They are quality products that provide a consistent experience but there is very little evolution or complexity that unfolds. I would like to see some kind of interesting development take place over the course of the experience. This is why Rocky hasn't won cigar of the year. The lack of dimension makes it more of a passive smoke than something I'm fully engaged in appreciating. Sometimes that's ok though.
