Fyodor Dostoyevsky and Crime and Punishment: Short Bungou Stray Dogs Analysis
Finally finished Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky. i might do a post talking about my actual thoughts on the book, but not right now because I'm INSTEAD gonna talk about BSD Fyodor because, if I'm gonna be honest, a large part of the reason I read this book was to see if I could get an insight on what his ability could be (obviously I also read it because I know it's an extremely influential book to the psychological thriller literature genre, and it's made me want to read more of his books because I am absolutely entranced by his writing style).
SPOILERS: This book did NOT give me a single damn clue to Fyodor's ability.
However, I do have a better understanding of why Asagiri chose to write Fyodor in that specific way, with the added effect of making Fyodor much more understandable. I have a better appreciation, I think, for Asagiri's character writing. Let me explain:
Tumblr media
The large, overarching theme of C&P is the idea that some people are naturally born with the right to kill. That is, people are naturally born into two categories: "Ordinary" and "Extraordinary". The majority of the population falls into the former - they live their lives in submission to the law and to those above them. In essence, they do not have the "right to kill"; they are otherwise overcome with guilt, regret, or simply caught for their wrongdoings.
The latter category has very few people in it, and for a simple reason - they are the ones who are, essentially, above the law, and therefore, the lawmakers. They are the ones who lead the revolutions, sit on the throne, and most importantly, kill when they need to kill and do not hesitate to "step" over their crimes as nothing more than the necessity to power. They are not caught. In fact, they are hailed as the greatest leaders. Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, and his most constantly referred example, Napoleon. These are the born with the "right to kill".
The main character, Raskolnikov (of whom I will be calling the affection Rodya because I am NOT spelling his name over and over again), believes himself to be a "Napolean". Rodya is the one who came up with this theory in the book, after all. However, he finds out, near the end, after several blunders and mental breaks, that he is not one of the people who can "step" over their crimes. He hesitated before killing his target. His guilt for his two murders sent him into a feverish state for days on end. He walked to the police station to confess his crimes a million times before finding some reason, right before he was meant to do it, to chicken out and continue living life under this ever-evolving notion that he was sorely mistaken about himself. Rodya is not the "Napolean" he thought he was born to be.
How does this relate to the Bungou Stray Dogs character? I believe that Fyodor is, essentially, the embodiment of the "right to kill". He is everything that Rodya thought he was, which is an excellent analysis on the part of Asagiri. One of the first things Fyodor does is kill Ace, then a relatively innocent child, Karma. He does this without blinking, without a hint of remorse, and proceeds with his day. He knows that this is his right, that he is the one above others, that he can kill and he cannot be caught for it. He claims to have mastered and tamed his own ability. Why? Because he is the "Extraordinary."
Another theme that I find quite intriguing is religion. In truth, it really isn't that prevalent (though there are a great many Biblical quotations and references throughout) until the last part, Part 6, of Crime and Punishment. Rodya has a near-constant epiphany with religious belief, even at one point stating, point-blank and in irritation, that God isn't real and He certainly isn't helping anyone in the mortal plane. He oscillates between claiming that the "Devil" forced him to kill, to saying that believers are frantic and stupid, then to kissing the dirty ground in repentance for his crimes. He state of mind ends in that repentance state, a supposed believer and eager to start his life anew.
To make Fyodor a devoted believer in God, with a set viewpoint and acting as an executor of God's will, is, once again, an excellent choice. Rodya's irritation and inner turmoil were one of the many reasons why he failed miserably in maintaining the secret of his crimes. Fyodor is none of those things: he is calm, cool, collected, and set in his ways. Interestingly, in Crime and Punishment, the vilest character also seems to have no particular issues with religion himself. And he, for the most part, gets away with his heinous crimes completely. This battle of belief, and relating it to God, provides a healthy insight to why Fyodor has obtained the "right to kill", versus Rodya, who was born "Ordinary."
The last point I want to seriously touch on is less about Crime and Punishment and more about the author himself. However, I did learn about this through reading the translator's notes (the translation I read is by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, Second Edition (2021), Vintage Classics). Dostoevsky was hugely indebted to Nikolai Gogol as a successor to Gogol's ingenious literary developments in "fantastical realism" and satire. Dostoevsky made several references to Gogol's works in C&P, and none in a critical manner. In the animanga, the roles are completely reversed; Nikolai is the one chasing after Fyodor, admiring his intellect and "ingenious" with the eventual goal of setting himself free. This idea of flipping authors' relationships on their heads is part of what makes Bungou Stray Dogs so entertaining to consume, and it takes a great deal of research and effort to be able to adjust these relationships so that they clearly reflect the real-life ones.
As for one afterthought, the name "Rats in the House of the Dead" appears to be a clever play on the Dostoevsky book Notes from the Dead House. I haven't read this book yet, but I want to (along with Notes from Underground). I'm curious to see if there is any further correlation, but I would assume not, considering the contents of the book.
NO. I did NOT find literally anything that could help me decipher Fyodor's ability. Rodya literally confesses his crime like a week and a half after he commits it. No character in this novel, nor theme, reflects whatever the h e double hockey sticks Fyodor has going on in BSD. I have theories, but they have literally nothing to do with Crime and Punishment outside of the base fact that his ability has something to do with killing (which we already knew). Woe is me. I'll get over it, I guess.

20 questions for fic writers!
Tagged by @feralrookie! :D Thank you for the tag!!
1. How many works do you have on ao3?
10! (technically, kinda)
2. What's your total ao3 word count?
379,547
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Just Bungou Stray Dogs! It's also the first fandom I've written for, actually. :D
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
This is how it feels to take a fall (Dazai goes feral, time shenanigans)
Plate :( (Dazai breaks a plate, experiences emotions)
Dazai and the Moving Detective Agency (Howl's Moving Castle AU)
Chuunyaa's Pawsitively Catastrophic Day (Chuuya is turned into a cat, it's short and pretty much just shenanigans)
Wish in one hand (First fic I wrote, and the first one I posted — Dazai has emotions about handholding)
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I try to, but I've been absolutely terrible at it lately — whenever I'm particularly stressed I start worrying that the negative emotions are going to leak through into what I'm writing and make my tone sound weird, so then I end up turtling in on myself and not saying anything at all, no matter how much I want to engage with people. It's a bad habit, and I want to work on it, so I'm gonna try to catch up on comments! (I treasure every single one of the ones I receive, so for anyone who has left a comment and hasn't gotten a response from me yet, thank you and I am very sorry about my inability to form words in a timely manner skdjfksd)
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Probably An Unsent Letter, since it's pretty much just a short snippet of Dazai being sad while he's leaving the mafia. And even with that one, I have in my head that skk still get together after the four years apart, I just didn't write it. I am dreadful with sad endings — although the ending to "This is how it feels to take a fall" is a little bittersweet, perhaps.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Hmm...I'm gonna say Dazai and the Moving Detective Agency, because it's the one with the longest buildup, so I think it has the most catharsis, at least for me! But I tend to give all of my fics happy endings because, as established, I am a wimp when it comes to hardcore angst. I will say that Zut Alors I Have Missed One is probably a contender for happiest as well, just because that fic had no angst whatsoever and was just Unhinged
8. Do you get hate on fic?
Nope! Everyone's been lovely! I have gotten some for my art, but honestly it was pretty toothless and I couldn't take it seriously lol
9. Do you write smut?
...Yeh. :0 There was an attempt, at least — one fic, and I made it anonymous (so on the extreme off-chance that anyone notices a discrepancy between my total ao3 wordcount listed here and the summed up wordcounts of the fics viewable on my profile, that's why!) It's also another fic I need to finish, I hit my writing roadblock with that one at the same time as all my others, and it's almost doneeee I just need my brain to cooperate >:|
10. Do you write crossovers?
Not any proper crossovers, only things like the Howl AU and the Little Mermaid AU, where I took the settings/plots and put in BSD characters.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I know of!
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
...Possibly? I'm not actually sure, I've given a couple people permission, but I'm not sure if anything came of that, I haven't heard one way or another :0 I do have a tendency to use puns, which I realize might make things difficult for translations
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
No, not so far — and given how tempestuous my schedule has been, it'll probably be a while before I attempt anything like that! Sounds fun, though
14. What's your all-time favorite ship?
...I mean, it's gotta be soukoku, because for all that I've enjoyed a lot of fictional pairings before (for example, Howl and Sophie specifically from the HMC books, Beatrice and Benedick from Much Ado About Nothing — I like bickering duos, what do you know — Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane, currently falling down the Hualian rabbithole because I'm reading Heaven Official's Blessing with my friend, and there's lots of other ones), for as much as I like all those, I haven't really had much of an urge to write anything for them.
So, purely in terms of me wanting to mess around with two characters and write them over and over and over again, it's really only skk! They hit the exact right combination of braincells, I guess lololol
15. What's a WIP you want to finish but probably won't?
Hmmm...honestly, most of my WIPs I still intend to finish at some point or another — first priority being the ones I've already started posting, of course! Although...just due to time constraints, I might not get around to writing the thief!Chuuya/detective!Dazai one I was planning a while back. (and I mean a WHILE lol) I didn't write very much of it, and honestly most of the reason I wanted to write it was for comedy — so maybe I'll turn it into a short comic series instead, because I do think some of the bits were funny :0
16. What are your writing strengths?
That's a hard one; I tend to look more at the ways I want to improve my writing then at what I like about it, and I nitpick just about everything I create, art and writing alike. But if I had to pick something, I would probably say dialogue? That tends to be what I write easiest, at least. I still want to get better at that too, though.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Descriptions and action scenes. I've been making myself write them more, so I think I'm slowly improving (the Howl AU has been great for that! It pushed me to write all sorts of scenes I wouldn't have normally :D ), but those two things remain what I get bogged down by the most.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
Depends on the circumstances, I think? I'd include translations if I did. I do tend to include Japanese honorifics when I'm writing in the canon universe, because there's not really english equivalents and it feels like I'm leaving something out when I just do their names straight — although I did take them out when I was doing the Howl AU and the Little Mermaid AU, just as a setting thing.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Bungou Stray Dogs — like I mentioned in the ship section, this is the first fandom where I've really felt the urge. Although I did write things when I was little that very blatantly yoinked in various creatures and concepts from the things I was reading and watching, which resulted in stories with pirates and weeping angels and Ringwraiths all running around in the same place. But I didn't usually bother with bringing in actual characters from those pieces of media, or even using the settings, I just made ocs and had them run around in my own made up world.
20. Favorite fic you've written?
I like all of them for different reasons, but I think my favorite overall has to be Dazai and the Moving Detective Agency. It's the longest thing I've ever written, and when I started out I wasn't sure I'd be able to do it — so the fact that it's most of the way done (currently chipping away at the epilogue, it is getting to be a LOT of words) makes me really happy. And it's just been so much fun! Writing characters I hadn't before, piecing the world together, working out the magic system, writing Dazai being a mess and Chuuya being cool, it's all been a blast. And I seriously need to finish the epilogue, because the followups are living in my brain and they demand to be freed aksdfjksdjfk
But yeah! I'm not sure how many writers I know on here have already been tagged, so I'll just go open tags on this one! :D If any of y'all write and feel like doing this, then go for it!

For the character bingo - Ryuji Sakamoto and Atsushi Nakajima?
For Ryuji
Tumblr media
I love him. He’s not like. My FAVORITE persona 5 character (we all know who that is *cough*goro*cough*) but he deserves all the love and more. The game and fandom are so mean to him sometimes :( (although the game far more than the fandom). But like with all the p5 characters I wish they delved deeper into his character, but honestly he’s probably one of the better ones.
For Atsushi
Tumblr media
You know what I HAVE done? Written a whole college paper on the journey of self realization him, Kyouka and Akutagawa go on in Dead Apple. He’s not really like in my top 10 favorite characters in BSD but he’s technically the protagonist so I’ve gotta be at least a little fond of him Yk? I think he needs a hug at least tho.

Thanks for answering my ask before. If you don't mind me asking (again), can I ask, who are your top 10 favorite characters (can be from books/ manga/ anime/movies/tv series)? Why do you love them? Sorry if you've answered this question before......
HAHHA don't worry these asks are fun and i enjoy them so don't apologize for giving me a good time. i do apologise for taking such a long time w these asks, im actually horrible at articulating my thoughts (which is why i am not a writer HA) i think i might be forgetting some characters, or maybe i just dont have alot of faves
1. itoshi rin (blue lock)
i feel like he sticks out like a sore thumb here but he's very much no. 1... something about him being an antisocial introverted hater with abandonment issues, but also has skills to back up his arrogance and (besides all the hate he lets fester within him) actually has a pretty healthy lifestyle.
2. itadori yuuji (jujutsu kaisen)
everything about yuuji is so inherently GOOD and it both interests + pains me to see him being put through all these trials and tribulations of a dark shonen mc 😭
3. gojo satoru (jujutsu kaisen)
i think, like rin, what makes him so interesting is that he has this arrogant and disrespectful personality but then again he's literally the strongest so you cant do jack shit about it. but on the other hand he's this playful goofy (incapable) teacher who spoils his students. i also love OP (to the point it dont make sense) characters.
4. dazai osamu (bungo stray dogs)
i find his inability to be truly happy in any universe fascinating.
5. tachihara michizo (bungo stray dogs)
if i explained it would be major spoilers for s4 and s5 of bsd so i'll just say that his contribution to the plot in the recent seasons really did it for me. the jump from s1 to s4 was a KICK.
6. mikage reo (blue lock)
he's a sopping wet sock. i think this is what people call a gap moe... this perfect, highly capable and charming individual turns into the most pathetic instance of man when his best friend leaves him.
7. giorno giovanna (jojo's bizarre adventure: golden wind)
his birth origins are alr wild. his stand is wild. his battle strategies are wild. his ending is wild. he (alongside jotaro) is probably the least expressive but his personality is so unique lol. a lil rascal.
8. kita shinsuke (haikyuu!!)
its been a while since anyone has mentioned haikyuu for me but kita remains as one of my fav characters LOL i think he's just very refreshing since the cast is full of hungry teenage monsters eager to win and he's almost like a breeze of calm HAHA. the inarizaki team is also very dear to me bcs theyre packed w such cool and strong characters that interact dynamically lol
9. tsukumo yuki (jujutsu kaisen)
honestly, she was the most interesting female character in jujutsu kaisen (for me) until gege decided to trash her. her appearances from todo's flashbacks to her in shibuya were all so badass, plus shes a good example of a character type i really like that radiates strong-confident-fighter aura but isnt really the brooding/dark type... but fun! ykyk. (oot but i REALLY wanted yuki at #9 bcs of her name LOL, realistically she wouldve been at #7)
10. raiden ei (genshin impact) + raiden shogun
again, another insanely OP character that it doesn't even make sense. her lore is crazy. the second raiden quest was what got me hooked (best story quest ever lol), i honestly can't pinpoint what it is from that quest since its been a while but it changed my whole perspective on her and i've been a raiden fan since. a combination of design, personality, lore, and strength (and additionally the raiden ensemble)
honorable mentions:
kaedehara kazuha, zhongli (genshin)
higashikata josuke (jojo's bizarre adventure: diamond is unbreakable)
lelouch lamperouge (code geass)
oda sakunosuke (bungou stray dogs)

20 questions for fic writers
tagged by @starrynightarchive and @feralshadowdemon, ty for the tag!! putting most of this under a cut since it's long lol
tagging (with no pressure): @that-was-anticlimactic @backhurtyy @rejectscanon
1. how many works do you have on ao3?
167 linked to my main ao3 account. maybe some others floating around that have been made anonymous or orphaned or something. who knows
2. what's your total ao3 word count?
965,845 - okay wow i did not realize i was that close to 1mil. huh
3. what fandoms do you write for?
well right now the bsd brainrot has taken hold of me and i cannot think of much else. but i do have a handful of zine fics for other fandoms that are in progress / will be posted eventually. i have a very long list of fandoms i have written for in the past; however, i would not recommend reading anything posted before 2021
4. what are your top five fics by kudos?
plum blossom
you clutched my brain and eased my ailing
my calamitous love & insurmountable grief
five times ryan came out (and one time he couldn't)
(just wanna be) somebody i'm proud of
my disclaimer here is that these are absolutely nowhere even close to being by best fics and i kind of resent them being my top five
5. do you respond to comments
i'm trying🫠 i let like 600+ pile up in my inbox over the course of a year and a half (or more) and so i recently went through and just marked everything as read instead of actually responding. BUT (almost) all comments on fics posted since ~august 2023 will get responses. exceptions are if i literally don't know what to say bc i'm bad at talking to people sorry
6. what is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
you don't even want to know the horrors that showed up in my google docs this weekend. but also either if one of us dies or may we stay lost on our way home
7. what is the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
i'll go with this ultraviolet morning light just bc it's probably the greatest payoff since it takes longest to get to the happy ending
8. do you get hate on fics?
not typically but there have been a few mean comments over the years. actually i got one bookmark on a fic that's in a series for a fanweek that says "ignore the others in this series but this one is good" and honest to god it just made me laugh. like.. you do realize i can see that, right?
9. do you write smut? if so, what kind?
i can barely write kiss scenes
10. do you write crossovers? what's the craziest one you've written?
i don't usually BUT when i was in middle school my friend and i created The Megacrossover, which consisted of us putting a bunch of different book characters into a hunger games arena. and we just kept adding more fandoms, and having new characters be transported into the arena. it was a good time. this was also entirely handwritten as all fanfiction should be when you're 10-12 years old
11. have you ever had a fic stolen?
not to my knowledge. definitely found one fic that was like. heavily influenced by mine back in my ouat days though
12. what's the longest you've spent working on a fic? and the shortest?
longest: over a year, at least shortest: a couple hours (not including editing)
13. have you ever co-written a fic before?
not technically since the megacrossover but corey and i co-come up with ideas like. at least once a week
14. what's your all-time favorite ship? from all fandoms?
outlaw queen has to be my answer to this forever and always. never forgive never forget 🏹🍎
15. what's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
too many to answer. probably the biggest one is the azula-centric sequel to tuvml that i simply do not have the attention to write bc the hyperfixations have travelled elsewhere :( there are many many others though. i have an endless amount of ideas and not enough time
16. what are your writing strengths?
people often tell me i'm good at characterization and tbh i do pride myself on knowing characters better than 97% of the rest of the fandom. not all of the characters. but most of them.
17. what are your writing weaknesses?
short attention span </3
18. thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
do whatever you want forever. but like.. respectfully
19. first fandom you wrote for?
probably percy jackson when i was like 10. no you cannot find that anywhere online because i, like an idiot, deleted it without saving a backup copy
20. favorite fic you've written?
definitely (i am) the whisper of a memory. i love a lot of my fics, but that is one i am especially proud of because i tried new things with the formatting and i think it worked really really well

Do you mind if I ask your top 10 favorite characters (can be male or female) from all of the media that you loved (can be anime/manga, books, movies or tv series)? And why do you love them? Sorry if you've answered this question before.....Thanks....
oo this is difficult but sure
1. Jing Yuan - Honkai Star Rail
oh i have so much brainrot over this silly man, hes tragic, far too pretty and has a lion for a pet (also bc the whole of the english dub cast for hsr is Top Tier)
2. cant pick between them but Gojo Satoru and Geto Suguru- Jujutsu Kaisen
running theme lol, tragic and pretty, i have so many thoughts about them and i hate that jjk is so trigger happy with tragedy djdjsks
3. Raiden Shogun - Genshin Impact
sue me i love a badass purple probable-lesbian warrior god who is both tragic and a pretty morally grey character in general (also shes beautiful, i support womens rights and womens wrongs jxjfgkkh)
4. Kaveh - Genshin Impact
hes unfairly beautiful, an artist, loud, so so very kind, tragic, hes babygirl and deserves better but is owning what he got, also him and alhaithams dynamic is just so funny i never get tired of it (i love fontaine but my heart is back in sumeru i need a sumeru event please hyv)
5. Nakahara Chuuya- Bungou Stray Dogs
hes another grey character, tragic, very pretty, with a brilliant japanese VA with a killer singing voice, plus hes just cool
6. Amelia Shephard- Greys Anatomy
a rare tv series addition lol, shes also tragic but her character is so beautifully written, her actress is amazing, and her relationship with Kai was so beautifully queer and amazing (and im pissed theyve left i want them back)
7. Hope Mikaelson- TVDU
i have so many feelings about Hope, from her experiences with grief, as well as how powerful she is, how kind, how guarded, etc, but her actress killed her role and i love her character to pieces (also, hizzie shouldve happened, we deserved it)
8. Shinya Hiiragi- Owari No Seraph
his backstory is sad, plus the whole thing you discover in the manga from the past makes him even more tragic, he also has a big cat as a pet (kinda) and hes awesome
9. Vanitas- Vanitas No Carté
i definetly have a running theme with favourites with tragic backstories lmao, this anime is so good tho, i also love Noé but trying to keep this list varied djfjsjsja
10. Annie Leonhardt- Attack on Titan
i dont have a specific reason for annie but shes just a brilliant character, another morally grey one who can beat you up if you cross her, she deserved better than she got but at least it couldve been worse so...
Honourable Mentions:
(depending on what im hyperfixating on at the time, this list could entirely change lmao)
Eren Jaeger - Attack On Titan
Hanji Zoe- AOT
Fushiguro Megumi - JJK
Blade and Dan Heng - HSR
Xiao - Genshin Impact
Tengen - Kimetsu no Yaiba
Cheng Xiaoshi - Link Click
Dazai Osamu - BSD
Anyone from the Mortal Instruments series (books but ill accept the movie and the series too)
likewise from Percy Jackson (so hyped for the series)
also many characters from House of The Dragon (emma d'arcy floored me with Rhaenyra and i love them)

its not like i dont agree with all those posts about how bsd season 5 finale is bad and stupid and was a big let-down and everything. cuz i do - but also... i'm not really upset with it in the way a lot of people are, tbh.
cuz if you're only now realizing bsd isn't a good mystery series and it has a lot of cheap shock value and forgoes interesting character development in favor of showing off how smart dazai or fyodor are... uh, welcome to the club? the season 5 finale is not really unique in this regard.
bsd, to me, though it has moments of compelling writing, and overall compelling characters (people Like its characters so much for a reason!), etc, has always been a low-expectations watch. it's always been the "oh what's kafka asagiri doing to his weird ocs now" show - from the start, it's done this. so much of season 1 reeks of the same "random out of nowhere twist to make the writing feel clever", and it's something the show's had a problem with, and continues to have a problem with. forever. to the point where to enjoy the series you just kinda have to meet it halfway and have fun with it.
when i first got into bsd in, like, 2017 or so, i hated dazai a lot. both because of personal reasons and because i just didn't like smug genius types who know everything. with him being such a major character, this led to a shallow perception of the show, as you'd expect. then, i rewatched it this year, and i went in with those same feelings - but i wanted to like bsd, and dazai by extension, so i just kinda... got used to him, because you can't fully appreciate this series and not. (that and i'd just matured as a person since 2017 and could look at him with more nuance lol)
like, i get being upset this season didn't end the way you anticipated. i loved the meursault arc, and season 5 episode 10 was one of my favorite episodes of the entire series i was genuinely excited to see a follow-up on. but also, if you know bsd does deathfaking and stupid silly plot twists that weren't telegraphed in the least, and you're genuinely mad every time they're pulled, then... maybe you should just watch a different show, yknow?
i don't say this to excuse the shitty writing, but rather, it's not really new, and buckling in for the absurd ride is part of the bsd experience, that it goes from a genuinely thrilling and gritty episode 10 to a completely batshit episode 11 that has the main antagonist quote jesus christ before dying in a helicopter explosion, is, like, really fucking funny. i can't even be mad. that episode is some of the most entertained i've been by this show, not even in its contents but laughing as i try to explain it to people and scream incredulously with my friend - it's a series where the good is good and the bad is, if nothing else, never boring. it's the series with the giant moby dick whale mech. it's the series that now has vampires in it for some reason. i think if you're looking for top tier character development and stimulating mysteries and peak fiction... you're looking in the wrong place, imo.

Hi....If you don't mind, can I ask, what are your top 10 (or top 7) favorite media (can be books/ manga/ anime/movies/tv series)? Why do you love them? Sorry if you've answered this question before......Thanks....
In no particular order
Blue Lock (Manga), it’s so silly and unserious with how over the top and occasionally edgy it is but it also unironically has some really good character writing and some amazing character development. Isagi’s easily my favorite protagonist in Shounen, in any other shounen he’d be a villain. A huge shoutout to the Isagi and Kaiser rivalry for being so well written, easily one of the most entertaining rivalries there is. But I also like how the manga does a good job at showing different types of rivalries with the four main rivals, you have the friendly rival (Nagi), classic rival (Barou), out of reach rival (Rin) and mutual obsession rival (Kaiser). It’s also just such a hype manga, I’ve reread it multiple times and I always feel the hype on every reread. The art is also easily the best art in a weekly shounen currently coming out. The anime is good if you don’t care much about the animation quality dropping, I’d say at least the first three episodes are worth checking out before switching to the manga because of how well they set the tone and get you into the series.
Bungou Stray Dogs (Manga), there’s so much to analyze in BSD, when you get deep into BSD, you’re not just getting into BSD, you also end up getting into the light novels, you’re also getting into the authors the characters are based on. The characters have a lot of depth and are very interesting. It also has Fyodor, the most babygirl of babygirls. Not a fan of the anime after having read the manga tho, it has many pacing issues and outright dumbs down and ruins characterizations (Fyodor being the biggest victim of this).
Oshi no Ko (Manga and anime), I already loved the manga and holy shit the anime blew it out of the water. The animation, music and voice acting really liven up the entire experience. I absolutely love the themes explored and seeing the life of idols and actors. Since Oshi no Ko is best experienced completely blind, I’m not gonna say much more. Just know that it easily has the best premiere episode I’ve ever seen in an anime. I’ve also listened to Idol way too many times, I outright know the lyrics of the opening because of how much it played in karaoke. I also really love Ai Hoshino, I’ve ordered so much merch of her and even cosplayed her last week at a con.
Vinland Saga (Anime), character development at its peak. The writing is absolutely top notch. Shout out to Askeladd for being such an amazingly well written character. There’s so much depth to the characters and the fans weren’t lying when they were praising the writing in farmland because Thorfinn’s character development in that arc is one of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen. I’m also a huge fan of the openings, I’ve been listening to them every day. I’ve started buying the manga but I haven’t started reading yet, so I don’t want to include the manga yet.
Kuroko no Basket (Anime), it is so hype, it is so over the top, it’s so stupid, it’s so unrealistic and I absolutely love it. It also has the best female cast in any sports anime I’ve watched, they’re not stuck as just moral support and fanservice, they actually play an active and important role in helping the boys improve. I love the philosophy of the characters and getting to see the point of view of geniuses at the top who all have different perspectives of what it’s like being among the best. Kuroko and Kagami are also one of my fav friendships in anime, they have amazing chemistry and work so well as the main duo. I also love that Kuroko is the protagonist, because from his point of view, it’s not just about winning the tournaments, it’s also being able to save his former teammates from themselves.
House MD (TV series), it’s just so damn entertaining, I usually love doctor shows to have in the bg but House MD is unironically really good. It has genuinely good character writing and characters with a lot of depth. I’m a huge fan of asshole main characters. Hugh Laurie’s performance as House is also amazing, no other actor could pull off the charisma required to make such an asshole so likable. He has amazing chemistry with the other actors which really makes it feel more real despite all the absurdity happening all the time (like how House didn’t get fired on episode 1 is a mystery science can’t answer).
Durarara (Anime), easily has my favorite introduction arc out of any anime, it’s a bit confusing at the start but once you get used to it, it’s amazing. Every character in Durarara is badass and I love their interactions and how they work as an ensemble cast instead of having one main character. The city of Ikebukuro feels so alive thanks to all the personalities living there. Izaya Orihara also absolutely steals every scene he’s in, he is such a little shit and I love him, especially when he interacts with Shizuo. I’ll never forgive Shizaya for permanently damaging my brain into thinking that two guys wanting each other dead is peak romance.
Love Live (Anime), I’m including all the series. Love Live is the only anime to make me feel strong emotions every single episode. It’s just such a feel good show, it makes me so happy. I love all the girls, I wish they were real so they could be my friends. It’s not the most well written franchise but it more than makeups for it with how enjoyable it is. The VAs also do an amazing job bringing the characters to life and are so talented. The music is also really good and there’s such a huge discography that you’re guaranteed to find a few songs you’ll like. My favorite series has to be Sunshine tho, it just holds such a special place in my heart since it was what was coming out when I first got into the franchise and I can’t listen to the first opening or ending without being moved.
Bocchi the rock (Anime), Bocchi is just like me fr. I can relate to her struggles with social anxiety so much, I deadass almost cried in the first episode when I realized I found a character who I could relate to when it came to social anxiety, usually there’s just shy characters in anime which I hate because of how unrelatable they are and just make shyness seem like a cute trait. Like nah man, the interacting with people makes me an awkward mess. BTR uses such creative animation to show what’s going on in Bocchi’s head and while it’s obviously exaggerated, it does genuinely sometimes feel like the world’s about to end when I interact with someone I don’t know. The rest of the cast is also very likable and have great chemistry together. BTR is easily my favorite slice-of-life anime and one of my favorite anime, I highly recommend it even if you’re not a sol fan (I’m not too keen on them personally).
Supernatural (TV series), not gonna explain this one. This is tumblr, you know damn well why this is here.

SO this is a day late; whoops, I meant to post this on New Years' Eve
I did this last year and wanted to do it again! So here’s a list that no one asked for of the top 10 anime series I watched this year, including two honorable mentions. They are ranked from (in my opinion) best to worst!
Animes I Watched This Year:
Arcane: League of Legends
Tumblr media
IDK if this counts as an anime, but I love it so much that I’m including it anyway.
Literally my favorite animated show of all time.
It beats out Moriarty the Patriot, Demon Slayer, all of the animes.
People who have been following me since my Arcane obsession began know of my love for Viktor.
He’s my favorite and deserves the world.
But the show is stunning; every shot is amazing, the music is astounding, and everything about it is breathtaking!
Jujutsu Kaisen 0
Tumblr media
Ok, I saw this in theaters, and I wanted to cry because it’s so beautiful.
I already owned the manga and had read it, and the fact that I love the movie more than the manga is something to consider.
There was never a boring moment in the movie, all the characters were memorable (with the exception of very few), and I absolutely adore Yuta.
Like, I already loved Geto because of that flashback arc we had in the manga, but Yuta beat him, he beat Gojo, and he beat everyone in the entire anime as my favorite except for maybe Inumaki.
This was truly Yuta’s movie, and I can’t wait for season 2!
Demon Slayer Season 2
Tumblr media
THIS SHOW BLEW MY EXPECTATIONS OUT OF THE WATER
The CGI used was absolutely amazing. THIS IS HOW CGI SHOULD BE USED PEOPLE TAKE NOTES
Uzui is actually my favorite Hashira, save for Iguro (my least favorite is Rengoku, don’t come for me) so seeing a season dedicated to him was great.
I own all the manga, and this was one of my favorite arcs, so seeing it animated was like a birthday present.
Bungou Stray Dogs: WAN!
Tumblr media
THIS SHOW IS SO CUTE, BUT ALSO MADE ME CRY WTF
Like episode 10? Had me pretty much bawling my eyes out
I also watched it in dub which was also a treat. I really like the BSD dub, and this was no exception.
Someone, please talk about it with me.
Like I can’t.
I need someone to cry with.
Spy x Family
Tumblr media
Normally slice-of-life shows aren’t my thing.
But this one is the exception!
This show is so fun, so colorful, and so just utterly amazing that I can’t help but want to rewatch it a bunch!
I don’t have any complaints about it. It’s just at number 5 cause I love the other shows more.
Chainsaw Man
Tumblr media
So I’m collecting the manga right now.
I already read it online and remember pretty much none of it.
This is what I get for reading it during finals week lmao
But the show is so cool!
It helps refresh my memory of what happens and every moment (save for the first kiss) is animated so beautifully!
They use CGI really well, with very few moments looking awkward or just out of pace.
This is only down at the halfway mark because it hasn’t gotten to my favorite part of the manga yet, so I can’t accurately judge how much I’ll love my favorite parts.
The Case Study of Vanitas Season 2
Tumblr media
THIS IS SUCH A PRETTY SHOW
The only reason it’s down this far is because I didn’t actually finish season 2.
I didn’t even see the final fight between everyone and the Beast of Gevaudan, or however you spell it
So I really can’t judge this show until I finish the entire thing, haha
Blue Exorcist
Tumblr media
I’M ONLY ON EPISODE THREE AND HAVEN’T SEEN IT SINCE 2014 DON’T COME FOR ME
I’m watching it in English Dub, and I think this is the only role that I actually like Bryce Papenbrook in. Anything else, and he just comes across as slightly annoying, but I really like him as Rin!
But this show is such a nostalgia trip. It’s great to rewatch, and the animation holds up really well!
Also, the opening is one of my favorites. I absolutely adore it.
Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress
Tumblr media
This one is so bizarre, but I still really enjoy it.
Like the premise is so cool, and the animation is great!
It just fell kind of flat.
They just needed more episodes to really explore everything they wanted to, but overall, 7/10 would recommend it to someone looking for a short but fun watch!
High Rise Invasion
Tumblr media
I’m not even done with episode 1, but I already really enjoy the guy with the sniper rifle. I think he’s called Sniper Mask?
Anyway, the whole bit at the beginning of that one cop or whatever trying to make the main girl take off her clothes wasn’t the best.
It is part of what brought it down to number ten.
The other part is just that I haven’t finished it.
I’m noticing a trend with my watching habits, lol
Honorable Mentions
Sk8 the Infinity
Literally, the only thing beating this out of my top ten list is Adam.
I actually had this idea of writing a story of a detective from America coming to Japan and arresting him because that was hilarious to me, and he didn’t deserve the ending he got.
He deserved much worse, and no one can change my mind.
Millionaire Detective: Balance Unlimited
Oh. My. Gosh. This show was SO BORING
I CANNOT
I WAS DYING
The first couple of episodes were really fun and jazzy and whatever, but by the end, I was doing literally everything I could just not to watch it.

20 questions for fic writers!
Tagged by @sensitiveheartless (kind of, they left it open at the end to anyone who wanted to do it)
1. How many works do you have on ao3?
40, as of today!
2. What's your total ao3 word count?
79,131
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Mainly Bungou Stray Dogs, but I occasionally write for My Hero Academia and Sk8 the Infinity as well.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
tastes like candy
raw
Kinktober Day 4: Praise Kink
Kinktober Day 3: Dirty Talk
wanna get out of here?
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Yep, pretty much always! The only times I don’t are if someone leaves a one-word comment or I’m not sure how to respond lmao. I love when people show their appreciation for my writing, so I try to show that gratitude by replying!
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
I wouldn’t even necessarily classify it as angst, but the Fyolai Blood Play fic didn’t exactly end with aftercare and cuddles.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Pretty much all my fics have happy endings. I hate sad endings with a burning passion, so as a treat to myself, I just don’t write them!
8. Do you get hate on fic?
I haven’t so far, thankfully! I have had people comment vague stuff about being “traumatized” by my work, but that’s mainly people who didn’t expect to find smut, I think.
9. Do you write smut?
Yepppp haha, in fact I’ve only recently branched out to writing SFW stuff.
10. Do you write crossovers?
I haven’t yet, but I wouldn’t rule it out for the future. I just haven’t felt inspired to write one so far.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
No, but I have seen a fic that HEAVILY borrowed from one of mine. It pissed me off a bit, but I’ve come to terms with the fact that these things happen.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
I don’t think so. No one’s asked me if they could translate any of my fics, at least.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
No, but I’m curious what that would be like. So far I’ve only ever worked alone in the writing process, so think it would be challenging to adjust to working alongside someone. Again, not something I’d rule out though!
14. What's your all-time favorite ship?
Man this is tough. Fun fact, I have a Pinterest board for ships with 26 subsections of specific ships, so there are plenty to choose from here. Soukoku and BakuDeku are ones I love to write and consume content for, but my favorite to actually write would probably be Ranpoe. They’re just so fluffy! I always feel better after writing a fic about them.
15. What's a WIP you want to finish but probably won't?
There’s this one idea I had based on a BSD theory that ended up being wrong. It would essentially be a long multi-chapter fic where abilities were written out of existence, so the story restarts at the beginning and the characters all eventually find each other, even without abilities or past memories pushing them together. So, for instance, Kunikida would still be a math teacher; Atsushi would never have been kicked out of the orphanage; Yosano would (interestingly enough) be working at a candy shop; and so on. I don’t know that I’ll ever get around to writing it, since it’ll take a TON of research on the canon materials. I’ve started the planning phase but it truly is a mammoth of a fic. Link to my theory if you’re interested in the details.
16. What are your writing strengths?
I think characterization is a strength of mine. I also typically have a first draft that’s like 95% ready to post, since I edit while writing. I usually do a quick read-through, change a word here or there, and post.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Non-character details (like setting). I get too caught up in the action! I can also be impatient with transitions between scenes, hence the massive amount of one-shots.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
I’ve translated one word for a fic, but even that felt a bit cheesy when I did it. I try to avoid it, since there’s almost definitely native speakers out there cringing at literal translations and google translate errors in fics.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
The first one I wrote for was Bungou Stray Dogs, and that remains the one I write for the most!
20. Favorite fic you've written?
Kinktober Day 31. It’s embarrassing to admit, but I must have read it at least 5 times now. I’m really proud of how it turned out.
Following @sensitiveheartless’s example, I hereby tag anyone who sees this and wants to do it! Have fun!

BSD for the series thing ofc <3
boogies
Favorite Character: I have literally so many favorites for this fandom. Dazai and Fyodor have to be at the top though
Second Favorite Character: Chuuya and Nikolai tie here.
Least Favorite Character: I love everyone except fukuchi hes smelly
Character I'm Most Like: i kin so many bsd characters it is embarrassing. But I'm probably most like Nikolai or Ranpo ngl
Fave Pairing: Fyozai, obviously
Least Fave Pairing: I've seen some truly atrocious ones in this fandom. Just out of the legal ones, I think anyone who ships akutagawa and dazai need to rethink their life choices
Favorite Moment: i think that the scene where dazai is resting against Oda's grave is my favorite. Like. I'm in pain
Rating out of Ten: I really like bsd, but the current arc is kind of wacky, esp with the,, vampires and everything? they could do it well but i dont know, its very good tho 9/10

No worries at all! This made me really happy🥺❤ And I am one of your faves?😭❤ I'll try my best to answer them all hehe
4. Link your three favorite fics right now
Just so you know they’re all about Dazai because I’m biased and he’s my favourite
Limerence in it’s Purest Form (genre: angst to fluff) This is literally one of my favourite fics that I’ve read before I actually started posted on this blog, it is so beautiful, and it made my heart ache at the same time I just-
Dépaysement (genre: angst) Another fic I read before I started posting on my blog and it absolutely stuck to me. It hurt me so bad but at the same time I think this is something Dazai would absolutely do which only saddens me even more, but it’s also so beautifully potraying Dazai’s character
Kind to the Lovers (genre: fluff) Jess’ writing is always absolutely beautiful, but this is one that I adore, I might be biased since I requested this one. But it absolutely made my heart flutter, and everything about it is so poetic, I could just clench my heart reading through it
There are of course many other fics that I enjoy, but these three are probably my favourites as of this moment
Putting a read more here because this is going to be long, since I also have a horrible tendency to overwrite haha I’m so sorry😂😅
Fic writer ask game
5. What are your fanfic pet peeves? Do they have a huge effect on whether or not you decide to read something?
I think my biggest fanfic pet peeve is that a character is not in character if that makes sense? It just doesn’t feel right to me, and I would say yes, it does have an effect, not really on whether I read something, but more of if I like it or not. That’s why I do try very hard to make sure that when I write I do my absolute best to make sure that if I do write a character that they’re as in character to the best of my ability.
10. What’s your favorite fandom, pairing, or character to read fic for?
Dazai haha. He’s my favourite and my comfort character at this moment, so I tend to read a lot about him. But I also read others such as Chuuya and Akutagawa as well
23. What’s your absolute favorite trope to write?
Hurt/comfort fics. I write a lot of them because I enjoy exploring different emotions, but at the same time I always want a happy or just a hopeful ending for my characters because that is what they deserve, especially in BSD. I especially enjoy exploring Dazai’s emotions in my fics and have the reader help him with getting a revelation and understanding, as it genuinely makes me really happy and I feel like gives a great sense of positivity and hope
24. What’s a trope that you’d like to never hear about as long as you live, let alone write?
I can’t exactly think of something off the top of my head at this moment, but I don’t think I’ll write smut as it makes me uncomfortable
34. How much of yourself and your life experiences do you put into your writing? What do you think your readers’ image of you is?
I would actually say that I put quite a bit of myself into my writing, though of course most the feelings I write in the fics are not my own, as I write mostly from Dazai’s POV. But they are quite personal to me, as I would try to imagine myself in that scenario to write them, and I would also put feelings from my experiences into them if applicable. But if I had to choose one fic that is most personal to me it is this one
As for my reader’s image, I am honestly not really sure haha. I do hope they think me well! Though judging by the way friends whom I’m comfortable enough to show my writing to, they think it’s beautiful, deep yet still feels like me, they enjoyed my play on perspectives, and I can only hope my readers on here feel the same🥰
35. How much has writing fic changed your life?
I think it changed quite a bit! I’ve always loved writing since I was really young, and writing fics actually encouraged me to pursue in this passion and actually get down to write haha
36. Are there any fics or fandoms you’re embarrassed to have written or been part of?
No not really, also I’ve only written for one other fandom than BSD and I am embarrassed about it haha, not for being a part of it but for what I’ve written because looking back my writing style is so bad😭
37. Give an update on your current WIP - if you don’t have one, give a sneak peek to a title or idea that you have and would like to write.
I’m literally working on a fic at this moment👀It’s still in progress but it’s coming along?
Tumblr media
39. What’s something about your writing that you pride yourself on?
I like my writing style as of this moment haha, I do like the expressions that I use and I pride myself in that!
43. Talk about a positive experience with fanfiction or the fanfiction community that you will always remember
Honestly just meeting new people and friends! It is always lovely to me that we can meet people from all over the world because of a common interest!
44. Rant about something writing related
Starting a fic is so difficult for me at least. I always want my opening sentence to be a nice hook but at times it can prove to be quite difficult😥

another AO3 interview!
Thanks for the tag, @kurandoinugami!
How many works do you have on AO3? 92
What’s your total AO3 word count? 168,517. I write really short stuff in general.
How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?  24(?) I’ve written mostly one each per fandom only, though, and some are crossovers. The ones listed below have at least 2 fics written.
Bungou Stray Dogs (32)
Yuri!!! on Ice (21)
Final Fantasy VIII (10)
Ace Attorney (6)
Final Fantasy XV (4)
Dissidia: Final Fantasy (2)
Peacemaker Kurogane (2)
Bleach (2)
Toilet-bound Hanako-kun (2)
Compilation of Final Fantasy VII (2)
What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
this is how you introduce a new fandom (Yuri!!! on Ice) - 500
on the other side is hope (Yuri!!! on Ice) - 403
it must be the caffeine (Yuri!!! on Ice) - 380
it's called a pedestrian lane for a reason, dammit (Yuri!!! on Ice)-  248
well, he has his moments (Yuri!!! on Ice) - 207
What are your top 5 fics by comment thread count?
on the other side is hope (Yuri!!! on Ice) - 31
it must be the caffeine (Yuri!!! on Ice) - 13
this is how you introduce a new fandom - 10
Time-Telling (Final Fantasy VIII) - 8
well, he has his moments (Yuri!!! on Ice) - 8
Do you respond to comments, why or why not?  Absolutely! I really love hearing from my readers, and enjoy discussing with them when I can. I do feel bad that I am not able to respond in a timely manner these days because of work, but please know that each comment (and email notification) I get for my fics really turns my day around because most of the time I’m having a terrible one for work reasons.
What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending? on the other side is hope (Yuri!!! on Ice). Major character death. Wrote it in anticipation of clinical clerkship for catharsis reasons. Ironically it’s a constant on my top five most successful fics on AO3. Do you write crossovers? If so what is the craziest one you’ve written? My first published fanfiction is, in fact, a crossover. I was thirteen and I Knew Nothing. Orphaned for obvious reasons, but I do keep track of all my orphaned stuff.
Have you ever received hate on a fic? a well-placed remark (Final Fantasy VIII), on FFNet, because it was M/M. We just had a good laugh over it before I deleted the comment.
Do you write smut? If so, what kind?   Not explicit stuff, no. I’ve recently gotten more comfortable with writing build-up scenes that fade to black, and are less physical / more emotional. I think this is the level I’m okay with already.
Have you ever had a fic translated? The fanfics I’ve written for Where I Belong in 2012 (FF8), to Italian. There’s also a Russian translation for express delivery for love (BSD).
Have you ever co-written a fic before? Two, for the YOI Collabs Project back in 2017. :) - To Kill a Pisces (with YuriPirozhki and SutcliffonFire) - Undercooked! (with jacobby)
What’s your all-time favorite ship? I don’t think I have one? I do have OTPs in a lot of fandoms and series I like, but not to the extent I’d actually fight to the death for them. (Not even Squinoa.) This is something I realized just lately- mayhap this be due to my age / cynicism?
What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will? Would rather not tell. Let’s not manifest things, shall we? That said, though, this is why I prefer to write oneshots in general. What are your writing strengths? Brevity, and with it, word choices that render a story succinctly poignant. Not actually that sure. Aegis and Nina can probably explain my writing better than I can.
What are your writing weaknesses?   Longform stories (no time and spoons), slow burn (no spoons and patience), and smut (no experience / skill). I may finally be getting somewhere with the last one, though (see question on smut). What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?  Only if plot- or character-relevant. Otherwise it gets written in English. What was the first fandom you wrote for?  A really silly Sailor Moon / Cardcaptor Sakura script-fic on scratch paper that ended up being used as actual scratch paper by the parentals, thank God. First proper fic, Bleach (see question on crossover fic). What’s your favorite fic you’ve written? primum non nocere (Bungou Stray Dogs), a series of Yosano-centered fics featuring her life outside the ADA as a medical doctor.

ok so i was unwell recently and so in the space of 2 days decided to binge rewatch all of bungo stray dogs, thinking ah yes, this is a comfort show, you know… like an idiot… forgetting that along with a lot of other stuff, i’d have to rewatch the absolute emotional gut punch that is dark ages at the start of s2.
but anyway, first of all, rewatching it meant a lot of things made a lot more sense and i could remember a lot more stuff. bsd was one of the first anime I watched during lockdown when i was descending down the rabbit hole, and anime was still a lot for me to consume them with having to concentrate on reading subtitles but also actually watching and understanding names and who’s who and all that stuff (and i also still had crunchyroll ads breaking everything up… like an idiot). but this time, I like actually got it all. and man did that make an already great show in my eyes so so so much better. i could go on forever explaining why, but I all I really need to say is that, like I was thinking earlier about idolish7, bsd is a show that’s target audience is me. I eat every bit of it up, the characters, story, aesthetic, theming, animation, dialogue, action, mystery, great fashion, eccentricity, I could literally go on forever. it’s just so up my alley it’s basically right at my fuckin front door.
second of all, this will not be a bsd review/dissection/ whatever, but my god these characters. even after my first watch I couldn’t pick a favorite, but now it’s even harder, and there are more competitors. I just have affinities to so many of them. I think atsushi, dazai, kunikida and akutagawa are the front runners, with a big shout out to tanizaki for just being my exact type like write down on a piece of paper what I go for in anything, and it’s tanizaki. And yes this is kinda pointless bc my favorite is and always will be odasaku, but given circumstances, i feel i need a fave that is actually… present. but yeah, just know this is something I am thinking about a lot a lot and will keep updating about progress, and maybe I’ll reach a decision, and maybe I’ll just drift between all 4 depending on where my fancy takes me that day. im fickle and bsd characters are designed to be my weakness.
but yeah, the tldr is that this bsd rewatch has cemented it’s place in at least my top 10 of all time, and that shit does not budge

Who are your top 10 female villains? And your top ten male villains? Thank you!
Oooooh. Well, in this list I am including antagonists (people I see as conflicted/not committed to like, the bad side, if there even is a bad side, but basically oppose the protagonist at some point). Also, they are in no particular order:
Female Villains:
Tumblr media
Cersei Lannister (A Song of Ice and Fire)
She's sympathetic enough so that we understand how she came to be the way she is, yet terrifying and depraved enough that we fear for the characters around her. I don't think that's an easy balance to strike for a character: if you make them likable it's hard to keep audiences from rooting for them, but the balance is struck perfectly with Cersei.
Tumblr media
Azula (Avatar: The Last Airbender)
As @aspoonofsugar wrote recently on Azula, I think she is a fantastic female villain. I think she is sympathetic despite her actions, and I wish the story had explored her redemption, which was clearly hinted.
Tumblr media
Claudia (The Dragon Prince)
The first three seasons have kind of been Claudia's fall. While as a whole I don't think TDP is very well-written, I do think that Claudia, Viren, and Soren's family dynamic is a polished gem of writing that literally carries the story. I fully expect to see redemption for Claudia down the line, but not until she spirals further and further. At the end of season 3, Claudia resorts to killing someone to save her father's life when she has nothing and no one else left, and she makes this choice after her brother Soren (now redeemed himself) chooses to kill their father in front of Claudia, devastating her. Their choices are clear parallels and both are somewhat negative, somewhat sympathetic. Soren can't kill his past: he has to live with it, and Claudia can't cling to the past: she has to let it go.
Tumblr media
Delores Umbridge (Harry Potter)
She is awful and I hate her, but you're also supposed to hate her. Her comeuppance is hilarious ad perfect, and just--I think she's a fantastic villain because she reminds every single one of us of an albeit exaggerated version of a teacher we all know.
Tumblr media
Karren von Rosewald (Tokyo Ghoul:re)
Karren is TG:re's best written character in my opinion. Her tragic arc takes place throughout the first three arcs, which imo is also the highest point in the series. Karren just wanted to be loved, and if she had to die, at least she got to die as herself.
Tumblr media
Nora (Noragami)
Nora! The reason I read Noragami is pretty much for Nora and her redemption arc. The fandom hates her for... reasons, but she's always been primed for redemption. Her name is in the title (which yes also refers to Yato, etc.) She's important. I wrote a few metas on Nora, notably here.
Tumblr media
Enoshima Junko (Danganronpa)
Despair. It's fun to find a character who is, well, just plain fun, but who is also bored, despairing, cruel, and terrifying. She's unique and a brillaint character.
Tumblr media
Toga Himiko (Boku no Hero Academia)
I'm not the first one to say that Toga is BNHA's best written female character, but I do agree that she is. She, like Junko, is fun and interesting, and she has an arc that is compelling. Her actions directly move the plot; she’s bloodthirsty and yet uniquely empathetic and compassionate.
Tumblr media
Yoshimura Eto (Tokyo Ghoul)
Eto's backstory and her motivations were fascinating. She was one of the most complex characters in the entire story, and despite the fact that you understood why her father gave her up, you also understood her pain and justified anger at his doing so. She perfectly illustrated the divide between human and ghoul.
Male Villains:
Tumblr media
Shigaraki Tomura (Boku no Hero Academia)
BNHA's best-written male character, imo. His backstory and the current chapters that focus on him are extremely well-done, thematic and full of character development, and detailed artistically. He gets so much focus that I can tell he's important to Horikoshi, and I'm excited to see where he goes.
Tumblr media
Dabi (Boku no Hero Academia)
I'll admit there's a lot missing here. Namely, we don't know his identity for certain, but it seems basically certain that he's Todoroki Touya; however, we still don't have his backstory. Still, his fury at the presumed father who destroyed his family and yet has the audacity to be a "symbol of hope" is fascinating to me, and I'm excited to see how he develops as well. (Both Shigaraki and Dabi seem primed for some kind of redemption).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Adult Trio: Illumi Zoldyck, Hisoka Morow, Chrollo Lucilfer (Hunter x Hunter)
Am I counting these three as one so that I can get extra characters? Of course I am. In all honesty I really think all three of these antagonists are really well done, sympathetic and/or likable. They're the shadows of the three MCs they foil: for Illumi, Killua, for Hisoka, Gon, and for Chrollo, Kurapika. They represent the traits the three protagonists (sorry Leorio) don't want to acknowledge in themselves, and therefore their encounters with their shadows are particularly thematic and powerful. Also, one doesn't usually kill their shadow, but instead integrates with it, so I highly doubt the three of them will be killed by their respective protagonist.
Tumblr media
Meruem (Hunter x Hunter)
Yes, again, HxH. It has great antagonists. But Meruem's development is literally one of the most powerful I've ever read about. I don't know anyone who starts his story not loathing him, hoping he dies, and then by the end of it, ebfore you've even realized it's happening, you're crying for him and Komugi. His arc explores human nature at its finest, most horrific, and ultimately most beautiful.
Tumblr media
Furuta Nimura (Tokyo Ghoul:re)
Furuta's a fantastic villain whom I wish got a better ending (not even redeemed really, but just... something more). He was so damaged by the system of an unfair world that he made it his life goal to become the villain and burn the system down, destroy it no matter what it took--and also hoped to destroy himself in the process, as he was born knowing he would die young and longed for it. I wish he had been forced to live.
Tumblr media
Mori Ougai (Bungo Stray Dogs)
Mori's utilitarianism is chilling. He's not exactly unlikable, despite being absolutely morally repugnant, and the Beast AU from Asagiri himself shows us that Mori is certainly capable of a positive life and positive change; however, within the canonical story, I don't see that for him. He's been set up IMO as the final boss of the series, and his habit of targeting the most vulnerable (especially children) to control people is almost certainly going to bite Dazai in the ass eventually.
Tumblr media
Eren Jaeger (Shingeki no Kyojin)
I can't believe I'm writing this. I don't know what to call Eren: he's the protagonist, and he's sunk to becoming the final boss. While it's possible he, like Furuta and like Lelouch of Code Geass, is playing the villain, I really hope not, as I think the themes are much more powerful if Eren sincerely believes what he proclaims to believe. He's a kid who has always wanted to fight for freedom and for the people around him, and now we're seeing the dark side of those traits, wherein he's destroying the world via genocide to save the people close to him. He's driven by fear and by anger at the cruelty and unfairness of the world, and he's forgotten the beauty of it. I hope Mikasa can  remind him before the end.
Tumblr media
Fyodor Dostoyevsky (Bungo Stray Dogs)
MY BOY. Look if a character is named after my very favorite real-life author, I must stan. But actually I do think Fyodor is well written and a master manipulator. He's modeled after my favorite character in all of fiction, Dostoyesvky's Demons' Alexei Kirillov. He really seems to want human connection, to live, and has forgotten that empathy is an important and necessary part of both of those. I hope--and think it is likely given BSD's prolific redemption arcs--that he will remember eventually.
Tumblr media
Lee Yut-Lung (Banana Fish)
Again,, he's less a villain than an antagonist. Like Ash, the main character, he is a teenage boy betrayed by the people who were supposed to protect him and abused his whole entire life. He's driven by a desperate need to be loved and jealousy that Ash is loved while he is not. His ending, when Sing finally tells him he will in fact be staying by Yut-Lung's side and will help Yut-Lung redeem himself, "because you're in pain... your soul's bleeding, even now" is literally the perfect ending for him.
Tumblr media
Jin Guangyao (Mo Dao Zu Shi)
I've written a lot on Jin Guangyao, but he's a walking tragedy. He ties with Wei Wuxian, the protagonist, as my favorite, and the reason is because they are two sides of the same coin--in fact, they're the same side of the same coin. They're not very different, and the fact that he finally at least got empathy in the end and was able to push the person he loved most to safety because of that--well. Brb time to cry.
