si vis pacem by athenoot - 70k incomplete - john wick reincarnates as deku, it’s so good and also a Very Funny concept to me

the dispatcher by bovie - 18k incomplete - deku’s like a semi omnipent god and also ten years old and also works as a dispathcer for underground heroes! The dedication the author has put into the fic is insane there’s so many maps, the disaster management and just everything is so well thought out and researched it’s honestly really impressive

permanent ink by maxine - 117k complete - it’s a bkdk soulmate fic, you get words on your arm at a certain age, something that your soulmate has said to you that’s important. Bakugou knows it’s deku but doesn’t know how to tell him. It’s bkdk but it also lowkey really made me like bakukami too

vacation by literalpieceoftrash - 10k incomplete - the last update was Awhile ago but I recommend it wholeheartedly anyways. Basically planes trains and automobiles except all for one accidentally kidnaps deku when he steals inko’s rental car and so all might (posing as a civilian) and her are trying to get deku back, and everyone is collectively trying to make their way across the country to get to california for the hero convention (to top it off, it’s also dad for one) 10/10

seeping through by ashenice - 6k complete - I love fics with the one for all holders so much, anything with the quirk haunted tag I will gobble up and this one is super funny. Summary is deku starts developing traits/skills from the past users starting with a shellfish allergy

the fine line (between you and me) by azureflowers - 50k complete - bkdk sharing a body I love bodyswap shenanigans so much and this one was so fun to read ! Little angst, little goofy, deku’s body technically kicks it but,,, it’s fine

cat’s paws on calm water by floating cow - 19k complete - pro hero!deku goes back in time to stop villains from attacking his class, tries to do so wothout being found out but it doesn’t fully go as planned. One of my favourite time travel fics ! I’ve reread it at least once I like it a whole bunch

a bunny and her son by wonhaebunny - 2k complete - this one is topical because of the bunny bakugou stuff I drew, but bakugou’s a big miruko stan and doesn’t know how to act when he meets her it’s just very cute and sweet and deku’s a little shit <3

gingerbread cookies by necroesthe - 14k complete - I originally read this when I was looking for peanut allergy!deku stuff and it’s so sweet I love it a lot. It’s shindeku and summary is deku get too many cavities so his mom (and everyone in 1a) bans him from eating sweets, he finds shinsou making cookies and decides to kick it with him during lunches

i'll do one from my big bang, there are quite a few dialogue bits i'm proud of with that one (caveat it's unedited, so like, who knows if this bit stays in the editing)

“Well, yeah,” Eddie said. “I need to know your feelings on Ozzy versus Dio as lead singer.” 

Steve laid his head back, eyes fluttering shut, as Neon Knights filtered through the air around them. “Dio’s a better singer. Ozzy’s scarier. Both‘re good.” 

“Steve Harrington,” Eddie marveled despite himself. “Always keeping me on my toes.” 

Steve laughed, raspy and tired, and bumped his knuckles against Eddie’s thigh. “Even trade,” he said. “You sat through an hour of me and Wayne talking about the Pacers last week. Figured I’d give your boy bands a listen.” 

Eddie’s offended screech could probably be heard back at the bonfire, and Steve cracked an eye open to watch the reaction, pleased with himself like a cat covered in canary feathers. “They- Those are not-” Eddie said, and Steve laughed at his sputtering, “Black Sabbath is not a boy band!” 

“Man band, then,” Steve said. “Dudes in matching outfits having fun singing about death together. Don’t see the difference.” 

“Well, we had a good run,” Eddie said regretfully. “But I’m afraid this is it, I can no longer speak to you. My conscience won’t allow it.” 

“Your conscience can kiss my ass,” Steve said, eyes closed again. 

“Just my conscience?” Eddie teased, and Steve huffed another laugh. 

I: Do you have a guilty pleasure in fic (reading or writing)?

hmm. it's a good question, because i don't even know if i'd notice without someone pointing it out to me. maybe the strict adherence to found family tropes? like, my characters are going to be Codependent To The Point Of Absurdity. or. possibly that i think it's impossible for me to write anything that isn't a slow burn lol.

for reading, honestly, i have no guilt with any fics i read. like, someone else wrote them, so if i'm into it, i know i'm not alone! but some of my off the beaten path favorites are things like sex pollen/fuck or die, Hyperspecific AUs set in other worlds/locations/timelines (@teddywesworl's appalachian farmer au lives RENT FREE), and missing scenes from canon that change basically everything about canon.

R: Are there any writers (fanfic or otherwise) you consider an influence?

oh man, absolutely. for non-fic, i would say i strive to get across the humor or emotion in a scene with as few words as possible like c.s. pacat. i love leigh bardugo's worldbuilding and magical realism. i also love Grumpy Old Man Goes On A Quest stories like what nicholas eames and scott lynch write, and that's been on my mind a lot lately — basically a character going "yes i used to do that, and i was good at it, but i'm out of the game" and something dragging them back to their past.

for fic authors, truly i couldn't begin to list them all. but my bookmarks on ao3 are public, and if there's anyone in there, i bookmarked because it hit me in a way that will stick with me. if an author is in there multiple times? i'm in love.

6. Work I’m most proud of (and why):

It’s tempting to go for the longest as I tend to be a short fic writer, but honestly, it’s probably Blow Me Away? It was a total experiment to see if I could write anything above a very soft M rating and I think it worked. I don’t think I’ll ever be known for my explicit sex scenes, but I feel more confident about including one now if I want to!

7. Work I’m least proud of (and why):

Hold On. It was my first in the fandom and for me that’s always just testing out my grasp of the ‘canon’ and characters, but it’s definitely the fic I reread the least. There’s nothing wrong with it, and it served its purpose at sucking me in as a 1D writer, I just don’t think I’ve done anything particularly interesting with it.

8. Share or describe a favourite review you received:

Such a hard question - I love every review! I notice the people who come back again and again, so shout out to those (adorelouis for instance), and any of the podcast reviews are so awesome. Something about listening to people’s voices just makes it all hit so much harder. I listen when out walking and probably make some pretty weird faces as I try not to combust with joy/cry in public. Also @zanniscaramouche left me a lovely page-long review on Let Me Kiss You the other day, which I haven’t even replied to yet, but pulling out all their favourite bits (which I LOVE). It was for a Merlin fic I wrote last year, but also in summer one person told me they have synaesthesia and when writing is really good they can ‘taste’ the words, and that happened with my fic Lay Me Down (which isn’t even one of my better received fics in that fandom). That one is going to stick with me, I want to hug it.

9. A time when writing was really, really hard:

Generally when writing is hard I put it aside and do something else! The time I pushed through most was for Rising to the Occasion, where I had real trouble getting it to flow and handling the large cast (as a Bake Off non-AU, every scene was in a tent that housed Harry, Louis, Niall, Liam, Noel, Paul and Prue), but wanted to hit post before Louis’ fish finger cooking video came out and disproved my headcanon he was a kitchen disaster. Turns out I gave him far too much credit in my fic.

10. A scene or character you wrote that surprised you:

The whole output of 2021. In December 2020 I couldn’t even name all five members of 1D and a year later here we are…!

11. A favourite excerpt of your writing:

Liam’s POV, from my Lilo fic Caught in the Rainstorm. I also adore the Liam and Harry phone call in this fic but that excerpt would be huge.

He’s not sure how long they dance for. The songs meld into one another, the DJ a master at easing from track to track until time seems immaterial, and he’s right in the hazy, alcohol-soaked sweet spot where he thinks he could do this forever. Lucille’s an excellent dancer too, and he’s caught more than one envious look thrown his way when she drapes her arms around his neck or shimmies along his front.

It’s hot though, close and crowded, and as he draws back to say they should probably get some water, his eyes catch on her upper chest. She’s sweating - they both are - and a rivulet gathers, snaking down from her neck and into her cleavage.

A little water droplet falls from Louis’ nose and his brain slams the brakes on.

Shit. No.

He’s here with a hot woman - and not just a hot woman, but actual girlfriend material - and… Louis. Dripping in his entryway, leaving wet sockprints on his floorboards, retching at sugary tea, his hair fluffed up from a towel, keeping the remote hostage, eating Liam’s naan bread when he said he didn’t want any, sleeping in his spare room and leaving without his socks.

Louis.

It thrums through him, a physical thing that starts in his stomach and works it’s way up until it’s hard to breathe.

12. How did you grow as a writer this year:

I think I got more comfortable with trying different things. Certainly RPF, which I hadn’t written or even really read before, but also omegaverse, which I never expected to write and which ended up being my longest fic of the year. Plus the aforementioned smut. And I now make moodboard/fic posts!

13. How do you hope to grow next year:

I’d like to get better at developing longer fics, 15k+, and holding both the focus for finishing them and all the threads of the story. I have so many ideas! (And so many partly written stories…)

14. Who was your greatest positive influence this year as a writer (could be another writer or beta or cheerleader or muse etc etc):

I’ve got to say @lululawrence. She left such a wonderful review on one of my fics back when it was still anonymous, then just as I got up the nerve to come off anon I discovered her podcast and literally teared up hearing her say such lovely things about my story. When I told her I’d come off anon, she followed me, encouraged me, subscribed, reblogged my fic posts, told me when I’d left off the link (it happened twice!) and continued to read, review and podcast about my stories. I tend to hop around fandoms and I honestly think 1D might have been a flash in the pan if not for the welcome she extended my way. This is true of the 1D fandom as a whole though - I’ve never been part of a fandom which is so dedicated to supporting and reccing other people’s fics via Tumblr.

15. Anything from your real life show up in your writing this year:

My fuzzy blue blanket. Louis’ mum has one in A Kiss for Christmas and Nick has one in Little Saint Nick. Nick also has one in the next bit was spanners to my plan.

16. Any new wisdom you can share with other writers:

Never assume you'll remember that great idea that popped up while walking/showering/etc. Always write it down! And don’t be afraid to run with something if inspiration hits, even if you think it’s stupid. My last one of those has ended up being my big bang for next year…

17. Any projects you’re looking forward to starting (or finishing) in the new year:

Fingers crossed, my big bang! Otherwise, I have a poly Blind Date AU which I would love to see the light of day. Also a canon Lilo set Feb 2022 so it would be good to finish that off by then if I can… Beyond that, there’s a Larry canon-divergence where Louis isn’t put in the band, a Ziam tattoo shop AU, an omegaverse Larry fic, a Ziam canon wooing fic, a Tomlinshaw/Ziam/Payneshaw(fake-dating) thing that I would really love to delve into, a Ziam Bachelor AU, a Zouis kidfic, a canon Tomlinshaw with cookery videos, a Ziam bakery AU, someone stop me this isn’t even everything I have ‘in progress’ let alone the 20+ cards on my ‘ideas’ list…

if i can be sentimental here for a minute, i’m feeling pretty emotional about finally putting up the fic i linked in my previous post, for a couple of reasons. the process of slowly editing it and plucking up the courage to do so over the past couple weeks is one that’s been intertwined with some of my lowest points in my writing enterprise, and the fact that i finally felt like i was in a decent enough place to share it publicly is a bit of an event to me. It’s also one that’s coincided with me finally reaching a relatively stable place with self-confidence, and I want to talk a bit about how I got to that place.

musings put under a readmore because they’re rather long.

some background: for various reasons, that particular fic was meant to be one of those wips I would never publish, and simply abandon to private obscurity. i wrote it three months ago at a time when i was feeling very self-conscious and Very Bad about my usual/natural writing style (which features lots of long sentences dense with not-always-straightforward implication, a tendency to opt for an introspective, stream-of-consciousness style, and liberal/indulgent use of descriptors and metaphors). my insecurity wasn’t the fault of any specific person/event-- it was something that stemmed from my perception that my writing differed (too) highly from fandom conventions i had observed surrounding style, tone, and content, and some personal weirdness around that. but the end result, regardless, was that when i finished the first draft of that fic i quickly looked back and came to the kneejerk verdict that it was terrible, unfixable, unworthy, etc. etc.  

nobody had told me it was terrible; i was simply on a self-critical bender, and did the work of convincing myself that it was so. but it was a blow because it was a piece i’d spent a good bit of time writing, and poured lots of emotional/mental energy into, and to sit there and feel as if it was abysmal and thus had to be abandoned didn’t do any favours for my writing esteem. that was also the time i stopped writing, aside from one other piece, because i believed there was something fundamentally lacking about my writing.

about a month ago i revisited the abandoned wip with fresh eyes, having forgotten most of what i’d written. and — to my complete surprise— i found that it wasn’t at all as bad. it was decent, even, and there were some lyrical turns of phrases/paragraphs i was proud of, and i enjoyed reading it. I basically wept as i read it, because suddenly I wasn’t sure why I’d convinced myself it was irredeemably bad, all those months ago, or why I’d been so harsh to myself.

(around the same time, my partner also told me something that stuck with me— “your writing is good. full stop”— which was a revelation because I’d always thought of my writing more along the lines of “it’ll only hit that mark labeled Good if you do XYZ”. my self-opinion on my writing was essentially contingent upon many arbitrary and constantly changing conditions, which was exhausting. so that was liberating. i realised that if I could just be slightly more confident and go in knowing I was good at some things, already, it would make my writing process a lot more enjoyable and smooth because I’d waste less energy fretting about whether I was hitting those arbitrary standards of Goodness.)

I was convinced my writing was Inherently Bad based on a few arbitrary conclusions (my style differs from what i usually see in X fandom space; therefore it is automatically bad), when more objectively my style was a mix of good and bad. i.e. i do some things well, and some things not as well. which is ultimately natural and common, and nothing to be ashamed of. put very simply, the issue was also that i was giving one too many fucks about mainstream validation. the issue wasn’t necessarily that I wasn’t getting any feedback/response either—I’d gotten a good amount of positive feedback in the past. it was something more endemic, and had to do with how I was so convinced internally of my writing’s low worth that there wasn’t much that external praise could do until I addressed it at the root.

i tried to approach this piece differently, with these issues in mind. I focused on polishing it until I was reasonably happy with it, not until it’d hit some mythic and unattainable standard of perfection. I realized I didn’t care how much quantified reception I got any more (bookmarks, kudos, etc.) because I was simply more excited about Getting It Out There and finally finishing something. I also knew that while it wouldn't necessarily be universally Extremely Amazing, it was decent, and that was good enough for me— and besides, as I was trying to internalize from what my partner had been emphasizing to me, my writing was good regardless of all those external factors (!!). it also felt much, much better to get heartfelt, in-depth feedback from a tiny group of fellow fans whose opinions I valued than to have mainstream approval. my fics (and this one fic I just published) will never be the sort that get 100+ kudos, because I write primarily for f/f rarepairs, but I did send that fic to a few very kind people who offered to read it and their feedback was infinitely more heartening and uplifting than a static kudo.

that leaves me where I am now in terms of my relationship with the fanfic economy and writing. these days, I’m mostly channeling Fiona Apple levels of “I no longer give a shit about reviews”, because attaching myself too firmly to the headwinds of ao3 approval briefly destroyed me. I give significantly less of a damn about mass reception now— even if, or especially because my tastes seem to differ from the fandom’s in terms of writing style and content. i’m more intent on having fun and doing whatever i want. if you’re someone who wants to aim for mass appeal and quantifiable metrics, that’s totally fine— none of this is meant to be a slight against how you approach writing. I simply think it’s a losing game if you’re in as insecure a place as I was previously, and that it was tremendously unhealthy for me.

I’m also moving these days towards cultivating greater community/communality in my fandom endeavours. it takes work and active participation but makes for a far more rewarding fandom experience, I’ve found. what’s more crucial to me-- over asynchronous, one-way and ultimately slightly superficial validation in the form of kudos/likes-- is reciprocity and communal conversation with other fans. and i’m very lucky that in the past few weeks, i’ve gotten a lot closer to a bunch of like-minded fans, with whom i can exchange detailed feedback and enter into meaning conversations about canon/our favourite characters. I write these days less to appeal to some imaginary, amorphous public and more for the enjoyment of friends/other kindred acquaintances whose minds i respect and admire far more. if you only ever receive one-way echoes, that’s extremely lonely-- but if you get to hear that echo turn back, get to hear some other input building upon what you said and not simply replicating it, that becomes something generative. and life-giving.

TLDR: the real fandom was the friendships, community and stable self-worth we forged along the way, not the superficial metrics of glancing validation. 

TLDR 2: i’m learning that there are many acceptable valences between the extremes of “this writing fucking sucks” and “this is my magnum opus which i’ve sweat a blood transfusion for”, that are okay for one’s writing to occupy.

number of fics: 86 in this fandom, working on #87 as we speak. Closing in on 2.3 million words now. :)

fic i spent the most time on: Hands down, Against the Rest of the World. It took me four solid months to write that beastie, writing literally every single day. The average chapter length is 7,585 words and I posted a new chapter on average every six days. I lived, breathed, and dreamed in that universe for months, finishing it literally two days before the mini-sode Many Happy Returns aired and immediately jossed it with new canon, lol. Doesn’t matter; I got it done!  

fic i spent the least amount of time on: I don’t know, honestly. I’ve written some fics in VERY little time. Possibly the most impressive given its length might be Deductions of a Lesser Mind, which I wrote, edited, and had posted within 24 hours of His Last Vow airing. It was my first series 3 fix-it fic and is 25,700 words long. That said, I think my really short ones, like These Four Walls (1,590 words), took me maybe half an hour? 

shortest fic: I don’t really do short fics, lol. But one of my few exceptions is Unspoken, written the night before The Sign of Three aired. It’s 1,130 words. 

most hits / most kudos / most comment threads / most bookmarks / highest total word count: Most hits: Best of Three: currently at 124,909 hits. Most kudos: Also Best of Three: currently at 5,423 kudos. Most comments: Against the Rest of the World: currently at 1,919 comments. Just comment threads? favorite fic i wrote: This is like having a favourite child. There are definitely stories that are closer to my heart... man, out of 86 stories, it’s really hard to say!! Can I choose five? In no particular order (really!), if there were five stories of mine that I always really want people to read, they might be: Against the Rest of the World, The Wisteria Tree, Bridging the Ravine, The Unfinished Letters, and Vena Cava. GAH, now I feel like I just sold out the rest of my stories! (I’m sorry, I love you guys, too!!) 

fic i want to rewrite/expand on: I’m a big believer in leaving a finished work alone. That said, I still have vague plans to write a sequel for Isosceles, wherein Sherlock and John go to LA to visit Corey Graham. :)

Mycroft purses his lips and moves the cursor back to the start of the surveillance video, beginning it at the precise moment where John Watson rushes forward and begins to beat his brother to a bloody pulp. It’s not the first time he’s watched it. It’s not even the fortieth. He has every moment of it committed to memory, as he’s been thinking about it at regular intervals since the day it happened. He watches the scene unfold again with passive disconnection, then pauses the footage once Watson has departed, leaving Sherlock in a puddle of his own blood.

He leans back in his chair and folds his fingers behind his head, frowning in thought. The time has come to make a decision.

Good Omens Fic Recs 1/?

I went to fix a link in this post and managed to delete the entire thing like an absolute fool. 

But my complete annoyance with myself won’t be bested with my determination to post this lot. So here I go again. I am so sorry if this has shown on your dash a million times. And sorry for the double links / tagging as I honestly went half mad over even the basics. This is where I am with life.

I have about 300 Good Omens fics bookmarked at this point to trying to pull out my absolute favourites sent me down a re-read (and in many cases a re-re-re-re-read) rabbit hole, which was an absolute joy so no complaints here!

These are just some of the ones that have just really stuck with me for one reason or another so I’ve gathered them up under the cut

Yeah I started pulling out the bookmarks I had for @princip1914 and realised it was...everything they’d written. All of it. Just...all of it.

But my particular favourite out of an outstanding batch is the following - which I have read approximately 70 squillion times. It stuck with me for so long in a way that I don’t think many fics have, ever. I actually can’t recommend this enough:

A groundhog day kind of situation ensues wherein Aziraphale has to fall in love with Crowley over and over again as a human until he gets the point. Highlights include: delivering medical care in rural Louisiana, stargazing in Vegas, strangers on a train, and teaching middle school.

Demon and Angel Professors - Ghostinthehouse - not 100% sure that this is also their tumblr handle so if anyone can confirm that would be great! They're professors. They're married. Their students don't realise. Cue shenanigans.

Multiple short arcs with one-shots (and often pauses) between them. Characters continue from one arc to the next. It's marked as complete, because each short arc is complete in itself, but there will be more arcs and one-shots in the future.

The Grinch Who Sold Christmas - @forineffablereasons @forineffablereasons Anthony J. Crowley, a big-time attorney from London, is sent to small-town Tadfield to close a deal before Christmas that would sell out half of high street to a fancy developer and put him up for partner at his firm. The deal will run the local businesses out and change the landscape of the town forever, but that’s none of Crowley’s business; he’s just doing a job.

But as the town invites him to share in their lives and their hopes and their holiday celebrations, and as the enigmatic Aziraphale invites him to share in something more, Crowley starts to wonder: if everything has its price, is he still willing to pay what this deal will cost?

AO3 name: andthenshesaid-write for the last five years, but I wrote under ‘ladyknight1512′ for about 10 years before that and there’s fic strewn across the internet under that name that we’re not going to talk about.

Fandoms: Currently Dan and Phil and Kingsman, but back in the day I wrote a lot for Glee and The Vampire Diaries.

Tropes: I try to steer clear of writing tropes so I can’t think of any. I write mostly AU, strangers to lovers. My Kingsman fic also features canonical age difference. And I have a thing for *whispers* mpreg, but I only dabbled in it and haven’t written any for years.

Number of fics: On AO3: 14

Fic I spent the most time on: Probably Stirring In Love (aka The Bake-Off Fic), but only because I wrote it over about six months for the Phandom Big Bang.

Fic I spent the least time on: A Quinn Fabray character piece called Do Not Dwell. I wrote it in about 20 minutes on the train into work years ago.

Longest Fic: Definitely Stirring In Love, which comes in at 71,821 words. When I thought of the idea for that fic, I thought it would be around 30k. Boy, was I wrong.

Shortest Fic: A little mpreg!Blaine fic called Precipice (417 words). This is a recent addition to my AO3 but I actually wrote it years ago and forgot about it. I found it in the depths of my Google docs and figured I might as well post it.

Most hits: Stirring In Love, with 16,349 hits. I’m still astonished by this number, and even more astonished by the fact that people continue to read and reread this fic. When I was writing it, I thought I’d be lucky to get 100 readers.

Most kudos: Stirring In Love, with 1165.

Most comment threads: Stirring In Love, with 175.

Most bookmarks: ...Stirring In Love (are you sensing a trend yet?) with 393, but only 267 are public.

Total word count: 162,613 in about 5 years, which isn’t a lot. I tend to only write one long fic a year and sometimes one short piece if I’m lucky (though I’ve already bucked that trend for 2020 so who knows what’s possible!). I’m not prolific, but I like to think I’m a quality over quantity type.

Favourite fic I wrote: This is hard. I think people would expect me to say Stirring In Love. I’m very grateful for that fic and all the love it’s received, but it’s not my favourite.

I think I’d probably choose my Phandom Reverse Bang fic from 2019, A Human Heart. It didn’t get a lot of love, but I was expecting that. Dark faeires don’t seem to be particularly popular in the Phandom. Still, I’m really proud of the atmosphere I created with that one. I think it’s the only fic I’ve written where I was really able to get what I could see in my head down on the page.

Fic you want to rewrite/expand on: I would rewrite Stirring In Love if I could. I ran out of time towards the end of the challenge so the ending isn’t what I wanted it to be. It’s not bad and I’ve never had any complaints, but it could be better.

I also once had plans to expand on Vigil, which was a little fic about Phil being a superhero, but I never made much progress with it.

Share a bit of a WIP or a story idea you’re planning on: I’m participating in the Phandom Reverse Bang again this year. I’m writing a fic about vampires... and that’s about all I can say, mostly because a lot of the major details are still up in the air.

Fandoms: Tolkien - 99% Silmarillion but there might be an odd LotR piece in there somewhere. 

Number of fics: 52 + whatever ones are lurking around on Tumblr that were never migrated to AO3 (some very short ones, or ones written as direct responses to asks) 

Fic I spent the most time on: I think An Evil Cradling, probably. Each chapter was pretty intense so I took quite a long break between each one to recuperate and let the urge to write ugly, violent torture build up again. Ideas really had to percolate, to get them just right. So this definitely took the most time overall to write.

Fic I spent the least time on: Not sure - probably some random tumblr drabbles floating about. I tend to spend quite a lot of time on my writing - I find it hard just to bang things out, and I really need to be in the right mood. 

Longest fic: An Evil Cradling just squeaks ahead at 124k words of pure agony for Maedhros. 

Shortest fic: Probably some of the ones in my compilation publications are shorter (Violent Delights / A Series of Drabbles) but as a published standalone it’s The Lieutenant at 567 words. My first ever fic back when I was a fandom baby :3

Most hits: It’s my dude, my guy, el jefe, big daddy; my most (in)famous classic This Game We Play, with 20K hits on AO3 and loads more on FF.net.

Most kudos: This Game We Play, with 680+. You all love to sin, what can I say?

Most comment threads: Yet again, This Game We Play, takes the gold. But only just. It’s got the most chapters of a single fic that I’ve written so it makes sense that this has attracted the most comments. 

Most bookmarks: Going for a full house at this point,  This Game We Play, takes it with 182. I still get kudos and comments and bookmarks on this fic to this day and I love so much that you all love it so much <3

Total word count: 518039. Each one of them a gem. 

Favourite fic I wrote: You know, I think it’s Sins Of Our Fathers. Giving the narrative a hint of Annatar’s perpetually annoyed perspective was really fun, and I loved loved loved the opportunity to worldbuild both with Celebrimbor and Ost-in-Edhil, first at peace but with Annatar slowly bringing shadow to their lands. And then creating images of all of the Dwarves and Men who became Ringbearers was great - I loved using the opportunity to show their different cultures and clans, and to write about Middle-earth at large. I had so much fun with the world-building beyond just the one location or people, filling in the gaps that Tolkien leaves in his canon, so for that reason this fic is my fave.   

Fic you want to rewrite/expand on: I don’t feel the urge to re-write anything in particular. As with every writer, you can look back on older works and cringe a little bit, but people have enjoyed them and continue to enjoy them, so I don’t want to change anything. Some of my ideas have matured from when I wrote some of my older fics, but that’s ok, I’m happy with them as reflections of ideas I had at the time. 

@crackinthecup often urges me to do an outtakes session of scenes that didn’t make it into An Evil Cradling - basically things that even I thought were too unsavoury for a “mainstream” Maedhros in Angband fic. AEC was meant to be challenging, but not gratuitously horrible, so a fair few ideas got left by the wayside. Perhaps I’ll write some, one day. Or maybe some sins are better left buried...

Share a bit of a WIP or a story idea you’re planning on: None in particular right now. I’ve drifted a bit out of the writing mood - I tend to write when I’m alone, and have large amounts of time to myself - holidays, partner away, etc. But with a busy work schedule and now current events cooping me up inside with my partner, that sense of solitude and time has run quite short. I’m sure it will come back one day though :)

I was mulling a sort of revenge-fantasy-esque fic where the Feanorians get hold of Mairon and give him a reckoning for his crimes. Might work, but not. Let’s see. I’ve also got my Dagor Dagorath fic idea that I’ve been incubating for years now - maybe it will eventually come to light.

Fic I spent the least time on: in recent memory, I wrote my Ateez Say My Name fic in a feverish 3-4 days. I also wrote my stucky time travel fic over one energised weekend.

Longest fic: my BTS Blood Sweat and Tears historical fantasy demon AU at 24k. This took me about a year to write and by the end I hated it but enough time has passed now for me to be a little proud that it got done.

Shortest fic: I have a 566 word Legolas fic oh god it's in first person don't read it

Most comment threads: a tie between Decoys and my Batman Begins fic (78) - the latter is an odd case because most of the comments are actually imported from the old Yuletide archive. That was my one big Yuletide hit! MEMORIES!

It's not that Hoseok doesn't trust Namjoon's taste. They already have a lot of overlap in their favourite artists. But: "I could also listen to these on streaming?" Hoseok says, arms starting to ache under the weight of Nas and Epik High's combined discographies. "I mean, I don't even have anything to play these in, you know."

"It's not the same!" Namjoon insists. "You get to, like, hold it in your hands and flip through the booklet and read the lyrics..." Eventually Hoseok bargains him down to just three albums, and Namjoon promises to lend him his CD player.

hello!! welcome to the little rec-list of the things i’ve been reading in my 3h ao3 corner!! i’m making this because i am simply unable to go for 4 1/2 minutes without talking about three houses!! 

the fics on here are just ones that i really enjoyed and so wanted to share! This isn’t an exhaustive list by any means, there’s a few i’m missing out (because I think we’re All waiting with baited breath for the next troubles of the heart huh)

i so wanted to include. everything. But alas this got Long. So this is but a few! I list the rating and the ship here, but please mind any tags and warning listed on the actual fic! (and as always, mind your spoilers!)

(I have a preference towards emotional character-based one shots, and plotty gen long fic. These are just ones that I loved, and I fully encourage people to reblog with fics they loved and keep the train going! The Cats of Garreg Mach by goldenteaset 

G / n/a | this fic is exactly the thing i was desperate to find in the aftermath of finishing 3h. those off-beat little gen fics about the environment of the world. It’s from the perspective of the cats of Garreg Mach, and is wonderfully done. the sheer amount of atmosphere in this little fic is incredible. The writing felt really light as a contrast to the forthright opinions of the cats! I really enjoyed reading it!! a beautiful piece of creative writing, a complete gem of a fic <3

T / Dorothea/Edelgard/Byleth/Hubert | not to be overly dramatic, but this is my favourite 3h fic I’ve read. The primary plot is exploring Byleth’s perspective as she chooses - and keeps choosing - Edelgard’s path. It’s two parts heart-wrenching to one cup cathartic, and I love the hell out of this fic. Dorothea’s character especially feels so spot on, as does everyone, and the way they all interact is just beautifully crafted. All the little pieces of this fic fall perfectly into place, and the end picture hits me in the crimson flower feelings like nothing else.

T / Edelgard/F!Byleth | The Angst Is Strong In This One. It’s the moments after Byleth disappears at the battle of Garreg Mach - Black Eagle Bonding time searching for their professor, after Edie says something that broke my entire heart. Humor is how i cope now, because this fic robbed my of my emotions. this is long-winded for ‘it hurt me and i love it deeply for doing so’. The absolute despair this fic captures has been reeling in my head since I read it. It’s that wonderful emotive fanfic style of breaking down the way the text is formatted, and it works emotional wonders. Edelgard’s heartbreak broke MY heart !!!

Fragmented Bonds of Our Old World by Hierarchical 

M / Marianne/Edelgard, Annette/Caspar, more in fic tags | This fic. Oh My Sothis. It’s shaping up to be an absolute powerhouse and I’m waiting with baited breath (and infinite respect for the author, of course) to see where it’s going. (I’m copying my own comment on it oops) The things going on in this fic - fake dating spycraft framed through letter writing, political intrigue, the amazing dive into the overwhelming emotions of Annette in the Eagle Strike Force. I’m already ride or die for this. I’m a literature bitch at heart and the moment Marianne lied to her father over breakfast had me sold on following this fic wherever it goes. I’m so excited to see where it goes, because I’ll follow it forever. (also really really interesting looks at Annette and Edelgard. Really interesting.)

Statuesque by feebop 

T (Eventual E) / Edelgard/Hubert | I left such a loving-ramble comment on this because . i love this fic . so much. The writing is dense, but every single line has another bit of detail and it’s fascinating to read. It’s such an interesting take on Edelgard’s perspective - how she comments on every piece of interest. It builds this brilliant picture of a post-war world and how Edelgard moves through it. The dialogue between Hubert and Edelgard is just wonderful, and the entire fic has little chimes of humour that had me laughing away on public transport. (also features Manuela and Ferdinand’s ending, which is one of my favourites!!) 

The Hands of the Emperor by Abyssia 

T / Hubert/Ferdinand/Edelgard (but you could read as platonic i reckon?)| You know how the game doesn’t really address if Ferdinand knows what his father was complicit in re: Edelgard’s Backstory? This is the fic you’re looking for. The author mentioned Jane Austen as a tone comparison, and that’s a pretty apt description! Lovely, lovely details scattered throughout1 Combine Ferdinand’s Emotions being so well played through, and an Austen-themed writing style, you get this GEM of a fic. 

A Leading Lady's Love by arrslanaltan 

T / Dorothea/Edelgard | i would tell you how much i love this fic, but alas my heart has been overcome with tidal waves of love for it and i can’t possibly do more than sob in the corning, occasionally whispering ‘el is a top.. finally’. I love this fic So Damn Hard. Dorothea is wonderfully written and her voice absolutely shines. It’s a fantastic display of edelthea at it’s finest and I love this fic so much!!!!! SO much!!!!

we could turn the world to gold by softshocks

T / Edelgard/Byleth | I would fell half the universe for this fic. It’s beautifully written, crammed full of wonderful little details and so, so good. It’s set 10 years after CF ends which is something I haven’t seen yet in fic and it’s Wonderful in the highest order. This is a joy to read. I’d have more to say about it but honestly this work speaks for itself. it owned my heart from the outset because it’s a disguised road trip and I Love those v much, and then it turned out to be even better than I dreamed !!

Would That I by Cowboy_Sneep_Dip

G / Edelgard/Ingrid | I have a deeply lodged fascination for Edelgard/Ingrid and it’s this very fic’s fault. The command of language in this fic is fantastic, it’s so well written. Everything feels so visceral and the narrative hits the Perfect notes to make me 7 kinds of emotional about it. This is not a happily resolved fic and I’ve been thinking about it since I read it, because it’s staying so hard in my memory. It’s such a niche look into what a relationship between Edelgard and Ingrid could look like and honestly it hits pitch perfectly. It’s amazing. Genuinely amazing.

pls send my infinite love and respect to all the authors !! and also to ao3 for existing at all because it’s wonderful and i cherish what ao3 gives to the world!! <3

Hiddlesworth fic recs

I have been toying with an idea of making a Hiddlesworth fic rec list, and now seems to be a good moment for it. So here are some of my very favourites! Each fic on the list is an AU.

hope you survive the experience. It’s a boarding school au with teenage Tom and Chris. One of its tag is “fluff and humour”, and that sums the feel of it wonderfully. It’s funny and sweet, and has 11 000 words too. I think this is one of the favourites among the favourites.

ergonomics. In this one too Chris and Tom are young adults. It’s a secretary/CEO au, Tom is Chris’ boss, and it’s wonderful. It starts with Tom being that asshole boss who makes Chris run on stupid errands and fetch him coffee, but you know how it is. There are 22 500 words to get behind everything. Trust me, you’ll want to read this.

sweet dreams, sweet cheeks. Another favourite. Which seems to be redundant at this point, actually. Here we have a soon-graduating Tom adventuring in Australia, which means his car breaks down in a desert and one Chris Hemsworth happens by him. Chris is a car mechanic and decides to help Tom. This is soft, so soft and lovely and has a particular atmosphere. And there are 12 000 words for this one!*

Also: every other Hiddlesworth this author has written, probably. And thorki as well.

Another author whose everything you’ll want to read. But to mention my favourites:

You Can Have My Everything. This one is PWP with some dom/sub and humiliation - and a surprisingly sweet ending. 10 200 words. ;)

All At Sea. I love this one, ok? I love it. I love it with my entire heart, and I need to re-read it asap. Here recently-graduated Tom is again adventuring, this time in Cambodia, and you’ll never guess who he meets there. 9 200 words, a lovely lovely atmosphere, just. So good.

On The Brink (Of Becoming Acquainted). This is a shorter oneshot , though still 5 900 words. It’s warm and fun to read. Chris is a prosthetic FX specialist, and one day gets to apply a full body makeup on one Tom. They talk and it’s funny, and they are both professionals, but honestly, who can blame Tom for certain physical reactions when a hot guy kneels between his legs?

This author has particularly sweet and loving (and long) Hiddlesworth fics. I heartily recommend them all. To name my two favourites:

And Then the Cracking Ice. This is beyond sweet. 38 500 words here. Tom’s grandmother, who has Alzheimer's Disease, lives at a care-home for the elderly. Tom visits her every weekend, and can’t help but note the hot electrician, Chris, of the place. One day he tells a little white lie concerning Chris to his granny, and it backfires in a way Tom didn’t expect. Honestly, this is sweet and everything feels so caring and loving and soft. Worth your time, tenfold.

The Ghosts That Watch Us. An enemies to lovers fic. Here Tom and Chris are teachers at a university, and it really doesn’t start well between them. But it gets better. Tom has to travel, and a little twist of fate (and quite a bit of Chris’ meddling) has Chris travelling with him. The rest is history. 41 500 words, all in one chapter. A treat. My favourite by this author.

Others:

All-Inclusive Resort by thisdorkyficthing. Tom takes a much-needed holiday to the Caribbean. Chris works at one of those beach kiosks/bars where you can find that cold drink you much crave. They end up spending some quality time together in the 12 200 words this fic has. Each chapter is a delight, a perfect for the evening.

Room Service by miikkaa_xx. PWP-ish, and hot as fuck. Chris is a criminal boss, and Tom is his lawyer. His lawyer, if you know what I mean. 6 100 words, such a great lead-up to the sex. Very, very good.

City of Change by suicidallyreckless. This is a modern royalty au (based on two films). Tom is a Prince of Denmark, suffocating in his tightly controlled life, and during an official visit in Spain he finally slips away incognito one night to taste a bit of freedom. Chris is a journalist and recognises Tom, and intends to pry into his private life to write a juicy article and get big money. So he takes Tom on a trip to Barcelona, and, well. :3 Exceptional writing, excellent dialogue, go read it at once.

So, these are some of my favourites! Obviously there’s more goodness by the same authors, and you’d do yourself a service if you had a look at their other works. Obviously there are other author as well, but I haven’t read very many Hiddlesworth fics by anyone who you can’t find on my AO3 bookmarks page (although some of my bookmarks are private, I should just one day get myself to make then public). But, I hope this was helpful to someone. :)

How did you come up with your username and what does it mean? i wanted a Haikyuu!! themed username since i fell deep so here we are :3 in terms of my ao3 username, Miah_Kat, it’s a mashup of my nickname & a name for an old OC; i use some variation of it as a default whenever i make a new account somewhere bc i’m bad at thinking up usernames on the spot. ^^”

2. Which fanfic of yours has the most feedback? (bookmarks/subscriptions/hits/kudos). what if i told you...? is at the top with 734 hits & 133 kudos (!!!!! holy crow) on tumblr, Cafuné is the most popular with 46 notes :”D

Writing certain scenes or genres, replying to comments, updating better, etc. writing in general?? lol idk i’d like to be more...dedicated, i guess? i can’t seem to finish anything without it taking months. i also have a hard time with details, so i’d like to find a good middle-ground with that. oh, and world-building when writing fantasy (it’s just so much work aslkdjfk)

Do you write rarepairs or popular ships more often? i write popular ships more often but i’m absolutely open to writing rarepairs! i know it can be disheartening to really love a ship but not be able to find much content for it, so i don’t mind getting rarepair requests. i like making people happy if i can :)

15. Have you ever co-authored a story? kind of? back in high-school my best friend & i used to write stories together. it was all for fun though, nothing that ever made it to a site. i think it would be fun to do a collab with someone though! :D

Was there an author who inspired or encouraged you to write? i’ve read basically my whole life and fanfiction led me to writing. there wasn’t a specific story or author though; just the realization that i could also put my own twist on characters/fandoms i enjoyed. i also have an amazing best friend who supported my passion when it first began, so she’s definitely a huge part of why i continued to write.

20. What writing advice would you give to a beginning author? read. a lot. write, even when you don’t want to or think it sucks. as with any kind of art, experience and practice is the only way you’ll get better. be open to constructive-criticism but don’t let the “rules” overwhelm or suffocate your passion. most importantly: write what you like! what you want to read! have fun with it!

21. Do you plot out your stories, or do you just figure it out as you go? oh jeez, it’s a mixture of both? i usually start with a scene in my head that makes me go “i wanna write that” but then i have to find a way to get to the scene? so i either wing it, if the idea was clear enough, or i scribble down an outline to get my base ideas down but leave wiggle room for inspiration during the writing process.

22. Have you ever gotten a bad comment on a story? If so, what did you do? i’m sure i have, back when i first started; i likely commented back that if it wasn’t their preference, there was no need to read the fic or leave a rude comment behind.

23. Is there a certain type of scene that you have a hard time writing? (action, smut, etc..)  a c t i o n, definitely. i also get kind of stuck on kisses? idk how much detail to put into them lol

24. What story(s) are you working on now? even tho i’m slow af about it i’m currently working on 2 actively:

a makoharu gift exchange fic!

a klance fic with which i’m taking my first steps into writing for VLD (i’m jumping on the bandwagon where they’re somehow physically stuck together (via alien handcuffs in mine) for a time & grow closer as a result)

i’m always sorta-kinda working on my various iwaoi fics; the nipple-piercing fic is near completion & i’ve recently remembered my single dads au that i hope to work more on soon ^^

25. Do you plan your next project(s) before you finish your current ongoing story(s)? pffftt all the time. the ideas are definitely more forthcoming than the Muse & motivation like to be.

26. Do you have a daily writing goal set for yourself? nope. i tried that for a while but it didn’t stick.

27. Do you think you’ve improved as a writer since you first started? absolutely! although i sometimes have mixed feelings about it, concentrating in creative writing definitely helped me improve in many ways.

28. What is your favorite story that you’ve written? i don’t...really...have one? ^^” i guess i am particularly fond of with a hoarse voice, under the blankets just because i feel i managed to get the atmosphere & imagery i wanted

1. How did you come up with your username and what does it mean?

Well my studio handle is Foolish Mortal - but someone’s been sitting on that username since dirt. So I went with fool-errant - like knight errant but stupider. The fool part is obvious - and errant means alternatively “straying from proper course or standards” and “traveling in search of adventure” - which I felt summed up thing pretty decent. My handle on FFnet and AO3 is NoCapes - cause I wanted to make sure thatif you looked up my website for art - you didn’t accidentally stumble on TF2 slash. That name comes from the fact I have a little Edna Mode figure sitting on my computer monitor that caught my eye at the time I was looking for a name. 

2. Which fanfic of yours has the most feedback? (bookmarks/favorites, follows/subscriptions, visitor hits, kudos)

Erm - well I only have ze one main fic online these day. My long suffering TF2 fic Smoke Gets in Your Eyes. Though even compared to the long lost junk I wrote in high school - its still got the most feedback.

3. What is your FFnNet/AO3 profile icon, and why did you choose it?

I’m not sure I ever got an icon on those accounts. I just never got aroundto it. 

4. Do you have any regular/favourite commenters?

I honestly love all commenters. I have a few regulars who became buds of mine that I love. Also anyone that ends up making something in reaction to my writing is special to me. 

5. Is there a fanfic that you keep going back to read again and again?

Not really. I’m a horrible person. I also have a mind that retains little details, so I am the sort that reads something once and can remember it clearly later. 

I DO have a few genre/ tropes I like to revisit reading wise. One is Lavellen/Cullen from Dragon Age. Another one I binge hit recently is anything about Finn from Star Wars needing and receiving hugs and people (mainly Poe) supporting him. And Princess Leia shows up to remind people to take care of themselves and Storm Pilot snuggles ever after.  

6. How many stories are you subscribed to? How many do you have bookmarked?

Uh...I’m honestly not sure. I squirrel away bookmarks and forget about them later. I have a couple in progress stories I subscribe to. 

7. Which AU do you find yourself writing the most?

I really don’t do AUs - unless you count the gag bit I wrote where Spy and FemSpy are the parents of Carmen Sandiego.  I tend to feel people are the products of their settings and removing them from that takes a lot of their traits away. Though that’s my opinion and I’m never going to tell anyone they can’t or shouldn’t go write and enjoy their own thing.

on FFnet - I can not make heads or tales of that one. Though I seem to have a couple of folks in South Africa reading - which is cool.

.....*Maniacal laughter*  I deal with chronic depression and anxiety. So I have a very large list of things I WANT to do but don’t. A lot of it is due to the fear of judging - and a lot of “no one wants this - what is the point?”  

I had an original concept involving airship pirates - colonialism - and the main lead was a trans pan sexual in a setting that didn’t have words or play book for hat sort of thing. The story wasn’t ABOUT the fact the lead was the way they were, it was just aside thing. But I scrapped it cause I figured no one wanted it - it was stranger and I didn’t want people coming out of the woodwork telling me I didn’t have a right to do that or that I wrote the lead wrong.  

10. Is there anything you would like to be better at? Writing certain scenes or genres, replying to comments, updating better, etc.

I have long ago accepted my inability to porn well.  I’d love to be better with my updates. But as mentioned earlier I deal with depression - so my brain meats aren’t the most efficient at cranking out things in a timely manner.  Also replyingto comments/ social media shit. I am awful at. 

11. Do you write rarepairs or popular ships more often?

I guess Rarepairs...I suppose. 

12. How many stories have you posted on FFNet/AO3 to this day (finished and unfinished)?

Three/four - one large chapter monster and lots of little drabbles that sort of grew around it. 

13. How many stories do you have saved in/with your writing program?

14. Do you write down story ideas, or just keep them in your head?

...Depends on how long the story idea bugs me, how complicated the idea is and if I intend to do anything with it.

Not exactly. A bud of mine and me in high school triedto do that but gave up. Now a days I just co author smutty bits with someone else cause I am no good at those on my own.

16. How did you discover FFNet/AO3?

I knew about FF.net before the great PornPurge. I am not even sure HOW I found them. Probably just wandering the net as a young impressionable nerd. I also used to deal with webrings if you want to guess how old I am. 

AO3 I...think I heard about on tumblr, or I had a friend or two metion them tome when I started writing fic again seriously. 

17. Do you consider yourself to be a popular or famous author in your fandom(s) on FFNet/AO3?

No. I always end up baffled to find out people have read or remember anything I’d worked on. 

18. Do you have a nickname or fandom name for your readers?

Not really? What?

19. Was there an author who inspired or encouraged you to write?

Not to my knowledge - I think there was a quote about art that I picked up via Ted Naifeh about how you have to get through 1000 bad drawings to get to the good ones. That tends to stick in my mind about  writing or anything I’m trying my hand at. 

20. What writing advice would you give to a beginning author?

I don’t have much for writing - but creating things in general. When I started doing art in high school the forums I hung out on always had the reminder, “There will always be someone better than you. But you will always be better than someone else.” Write as things come to mind. You don’t have to write in sequential order - you can edit that later. Don’t worry if things come out rough and ugly in your first drafts, things can get polished later. Write what you want, not what you think others will want. Also to paraphrase Dr Suess - if you draw a monster with three heads, be sure to give it three toothbrushes. Keep details in mind when building a world/ scenario.

21. Do you plot out your stories, or do you just figure it out as you go?

I have a rough skeleton or shape I start with - when I start writing it all out things start getting filled in - or changed from the original plan cause something better came up. 

22. Have you ever gotten a bad comment on a story? If so, what did you do?

Occasionally I would get folks complaining about “the slow bits” where it’s just banter - or folks getting snotty about the lack of sex scenes, but generally nothing “bad” just antsy. 

23. Is there a certain type of scene that you have a hard time writing? (action, smut, etc..)

SMUT - I’m a poor little ace robot. My brain doesn’t quite know what to do with smut scenes. Where do hands go? What do they do? People do what? Don’t they know what comes out of those places? EVERYONE NEEDS TO WASH THEIR HANDS.  I don’t cut the scenes since I know it’s a thing people do- and it feels disingenuous to have violence in a story and then get all fiddly when sex shows up. So I have cucu help me out - and have lots of feedback from other folks as we muddle along. 

24. What story(s) are you working on now?

Still working on Smoke as I can and trying to flesh out an original concept, which is sort of a post apocalyptic noir,

25. Do you plan your next project(s) before you finish your current ongoing story(s)?

YEP 

26. Do you have a daily writing goal set for yourself?

Not DAILY - but I do try to make myself add 500 words to what I’m working on when I do sit down to write. 

27. Do you think you’ve improved as a writer since you first started?

Thankfully 

28. What is your favorite story(s) that you’ve written?

I dunno - I mean I don’t have much going on right now that’s eaten my time and attention as much as Smoke Gets in Your Eyes has. 

29. What is your least favorite story(s) that you’ve written?

Nothing that I’ve left out in public. I cleared out my old writing archives ages ago and I tend not to let myself look back. 

30. Where do you see yourself (as a writer) in 5 years?

I don’t actually know. I rarely consider myself a writer. I am an artist - I went to school for art and drawing. I just sort of accidentally picked writing back up. 

31. What is the easiest thing about writing?

Planning - Conceptualizing. The early stages when everything is still nebulous and nothing is forced into words. 

32. What is the hardest thing about writing?

Putting things into words. Also the whole “creating things to toss into the void” sensation.

33. Why do you write?

Because my brain sort of will keep daisy chaining ideas and building stories with or without my permission. So focusing on them - writing them and getting them out on paper for others to look at seems the only real solution.  Also cause my friends got sick of my being like “so hypothetically - if blah and blah happened - you think such and such would shake out of that?”
