7 and 24 for the ask meme!
7. What story/headcanons do you feel the proudest of?
Honestly, I’m proud that I’ve written anything at all. However, I’m still really proud of Lonely in Conflict, Cast as a Convict, which I wrote for the Phandom Reverse Bang in 2020, because I was doing things with the characters that I knew was risky but I was excited to explore.
In terms of RQG, I would probably say Fade Out, which I wrote for the Line Is Erased event at the end of 2021. This was a little Zoscar fic set towards the end of Oscar’s life, and it’s very soft and quiet. But I’m very interested in Zolf as a caretaker, but also as someone who needs a lot of care himself, and I feel like I touching on that here.
24. Do you prefer AUs with the characters, or sticking to the original universe?
AUs. All my biggest and most popular fics have been AUs. I get invested in stories because of the characters. Everything around the characters isn’t important, so I like putting them into different settings and situations and seeing how they cope. Also, there’s less pressure to get things right with an AU.

I felt like doing a Q&A to mark the end of 2021, which was super sucky IRL but also the best writing year I’ve had in about 15 years, so here we are.
1. What’s your personal favourite thing you wrote this year?
I really love But Hope Remains, which I wrote in the immediate aftermath of the RQG finale. I just think there’s a lot of emotion in it.
2. What’s your least favourite thing you wrote this year?
Maybe Luxury in Self-Reproach? It’s not a bad fic but it was the first thing I ever wrote for RQG and I think that shows. I was testing the waters with it really, and it’s a bit of a nothing fic in my opinion.
3. Which of your fics was most different from what you usually write?
I suppose there are two. First was Fade Out, which is more angsty than I usually write, because it addresses the significant difference in lifespan between Zolf and Wilde. But I also really love this fic. It’s very bittersweet in that it shows them at the end of Wilde’s life and how much they still love and want to look after each other.
The other fic is On Entitlement, which I actually wrote because I was feeling really angry at how people in my city were rioting against all the measures put in place to help prevent the spread of Covid. I think it’s inevitable that some of our feelings will creep into our writing, but this is the first piece that I’ve deliberately written about an emotion that I was specifically feeling. It’s also the first time I’ve let my own personal feelings about a character seep into a piece. I’ve never liked Hamid and at times I’ve actively hated him, and I channeled all that into this fic.
4. Which of your fics this year was most successful?
If we’re basing this on hits, then Not Your Type, my Dan and Phil royalty AU. I posted that one in January, so it’s not surprising it’s been viewed more than the others.
If we’re talking kudos, then it’ll be Stay and Rest Awhile, which was my first ‘big’ RQG/Zoscar fic.
5. Which of your fics do you wish was more successful?
Maybe Starting Line, which was the first piece I wrote for the Erasing the Line event, to celebrate the end of RQG. It occurs in the morning before the campaign starts, and checks in with each of Wilde, Sasha, Hamid, Bertie and Zolf. I've always been fascinated by the idea that people exist in the world before I knew them. Like, yeah, obviously. But it’s a concept my mind has always struggled to comprehend, so I wanted to explore that a little bit with these characters before their lives were completely changed.
6. What’s your favourite piece of dialogue you wrote this year?
I’m not sure this is actually my favourite piece of dialogue, but I was scrolling through some fics to remind myself of what I’ve written and I choked on my coffee when I read this snippet from In Times of Grief and Sorrow:
[Wilde] “So you're not here for me at all. You just don't want to be the worst version of yourself.”
Zolf tips his head to the side in something like acknowledgement. “I think that's called growth.”
“Maybe you can go grow somewhere else.”
7. What’s your favourite piece of description or narration?
I’ve written some great pieces of narration this year, if I do say so myself. There’s something about Zolf and Wilde that just brings it out of me. It’s hard to choose just one, but the one that sticks out the most in my memory is from An Ode:
He wants to write sonnets about the knobs of Zolf’s spine, the ridges of his ribs, the dip at the small of his back. He would dedicate pages to the callouses on Zolf’s palms, run a bottle of ink dry trying to describe the lines above his hips.
8. Which fic this year was most fun to write?
This is a hard question to answer because I wouldn’t say writing is fun for me. I love having written and getting to see what other people think and feel about what I’ve written, and I even enjoy reading my work in the weeks and months after posting it. But the act of writing is not typically something I enjoy.
Having said that, if I had to pick one, maybe Unexpected Intimacy, which is my Zoscar hair braiding fic. I love Zoscar hair braiding fics and I’m so glad I got to write one. It felt weirdly like ASMR when I was writing it, so I put a hair brushing video on in the background and it was very relaxing.
9. If you could go back and change something about one of the fics you wrote this year, what would it be?
In Stay and Rest Awhile, Wilde has a panic attack and I didn’t explore it to the extent that I should have. I can’t remember why I decided not to. Maybe I just thought people wouldn’t want to read it? But I posted that fic in June and I still think about that moment and how I didn’t do it justice.
10. What, if anything, are you going to try to do differently in your writing in the new year?
Nothing super different, but I want to write a long RQG fic and I’ve actually started it but I really want to try to finish it and get it posted. I love the idea of it so much and I think it could be really good.
End Of Year Fic-Writer ask meme:
This has been a long, weird year, and if you’re like me, you wrote a whole whack of fic over the course of it. So here’s a bunch of questions to ask about that:
What’s your personal favourite thing you wrote this year?
What’s your least favourite thing you wrote this year?
Which of your fics was most different from what you usually write?
Which of your fics this year was most successful?
Which of your fics do you wish was more successful?
What’s your favourite piece of dialogue you wrote this year?
What’s your favourite piece of description or narration?
Which fic this year was most fun to write?
If you could go back and change something about one of the fics you wrote this year, what would it be?
What, if anything, are you going to try to do differently in your writing in the new year?

The thing about writing Zoscar is that there’s either a whole lot of talking or a whole lot of silence. There is no in-between.

I started writing my new RQG fic today. It’s going to be a long one. I don’t know how long or when it will be ready for posting, but I’m aiming to have the first draft finished by the end of March. Then I’ll work on the edits and hopefully get it into good shape and start posting. I might post snippets here along the way, if anyone would be interested in that. If so, let me know.
March feels like an incredibly long way away but I think it will probably go faster than I expect. I’m just really excited to write this fic and I want it to be good, so I’m going to give it the time it needs to get there. Hopefully some of you will still be interested in reading it when the time comes.

I answered all the questions! Like I said above, I really enjoy reflecting on what I’ve loved about a piece of media and why, and talking about those things that I loved, so this was fun.
1. What is that one moment from the show that you will find yourself thinking back to, intermittently, for years to come?
Probably Wilde’s first death, because it absolutely broke me. The first time I listened to the show, that episode was the last one that had come out when I caught up and then the show was on its Halloween hiatus, and I was completely wrecked by Wilde’s death. I cried so hard my face was red. There aren’t many stories, in any medium, that have earned that kind of visceral response from me.
2. What has been your favourite relationship to see (well, hear) develop?
Zolf and Wilde. Enemies to lovers is my favourite trope so when it crosses with my favourite characters in a story, that’s the end of the line for me. There could never be anyone else. I loved the snark and antagonism of their early relationship, but the exasperated care they have for each other in Season 4 is what really stole my heart.
3. What was your favourite running joke, in or out of character?
‘I’ve got loads of hit points.’
4. Who was your favourite PC, and why was it Sasha? Jk: who was your favourite PC?
Although I do love Sasha, Zolf is my favourite. He was my favourite in the beginning and he was my favourite at the end. I’ve been surprised by how much I relate to him, and that’s something that I’ve only realised over the last few months while I’ve been writing fic.
5. Pick a character and make a prediction for their epilogue.
Cel will adopt Brutor and will give him the home he always deserved. I think they’ll return to Japan at some point, in the far distant future, but they’ve got other things to learn about for now.
6. What is something you are wholly convinced will happen in the finale?
I mean, if you’d asked me this a week ago I probably could have thought of something and it would have absolutely not been what actually occurred. Honestly, I didn’t think much about what I thought might happen or not happen in the finale. I was too stressed worrying that Zolf and/or Wilde might die so I was too busy manifesting survival.
7. What is something you do not at all think will happen in the finale, but is just fun to daydream about?
See above.
8. What mystery do you really hope still gets resolved, and how do you predict that will happen?
I want to know two things: everything about Wilde (ok, that’s a big thing – mostly how he got his scar and what was happening with him during those lost 18 months) and what happened to Barret. Was he really that thing that attacked them outside the lab? Did he escape and is he now loose in London again? Did he disintegrate under the weight of a whole fandom’s hatred? Inquiring minds need to know! As for how we’ll find out these things, probably some kind of Q&A. I don’t anticipate them coming up in the epilogue.
9. Which was your favourite arc and why?
France, Japan and the airship, but don’t ask me to choose because I can’t. I loved them all for different reasons. I think the show really hit its stride in France and there were some really good character moments scattered around the fun adventure. Japan felt really new and exciting because you get a sense of how much the world has changed since Azu and Hamid have been gone. Also we get Zolf back. And the airship was just fun. So many interesting characters and dynamics that really shook things up.
10. Who was your favourite NPC, and why is it Skraak? There’s no joke here, if it’s not Skraak you’re wrong. (Fine, fine, who was your favourite NPC?)
Wilde. Just Wilde. I loved him from the beginning, even when he was supposed to be annoying and insufferable.
11. Which raw-ass line will stick in your mind for years to come?
‘You are more important than a thing’.
12. Is there an episode you keep downloaded at all times, just in case you want to go back to it? If not, which episode would this be if you did?
Eat, Drink and Be Merry, for what should be obvious reasons, the metacasts, and also the specials that Tim Meredith was in.
13. What’s a moment from another piece of media that reminds you of RQG?
I mean, literally any time I see a real-life image of any of the historical figures I think of RQG. But that’s it really.
14. What’s a detail of the show that you always forgot, and when you’re reminded of it it always comes as a shock?
I always forget the Bertie rolled a Natural 20 on his statue disguise check. I don’t know why I can’t hold onto that detail, but at least it means it’s always an incredible surprise when I hear it again.
15. Which moments have genuinely made you cry?
There haven’t been many, to be honest. Wilde’s first death was definitely the moment that got the biggest reaction out of me. Wilde’s second death was a shock, and I did get teary, but there was so much going on in that fight and Ben, Bryn and Alex were throwing so many numbers around, that it almost felt like they’d saved him before I’d had time to process that he was dead again.
16. If you’ve ever created fan content for the show, which piece are you most proud of?
I’ve written 18 fics for RQG in the last 7 months and I don’t know how to choose a favourite. Maybe the most recent one, ‘But Hope Remains’, which I wrote immediately after the finale? It just came so easily and I really like the way it sounds in my head.
17. Make a RQG meme!
Memes aren’t really my thing. Let someone else do this one.
18. Why did you first start listening to the show?
I came for TMA but stayed for RQG. I started listening to RQG after I’d caught up with TMA and it quickly owned my whole heart. TMA is a great show, but RQG has so much heart, and I love all the characters so much.
19. Can you try to put into words the crushing nostalgia you now feel when you think back to the prologue episodes, and how you felt listening to them for the first time vs how that would feel now?
I’m currently listening to the show for the fourth time (the party are in the Shoin Institute while I’m writing this) so I’ve listened to the start a few times now, and every time I get excited because I know what I’m in for, and I can’t wait to experience the ride again. The first episodes don’t have the quality of the later ones, but they’re special. There’s something about them that always feels new.
20. I’m a firm believer that everyone takes at least a little piece of every piece of media they consume away with them, to become a part of their lifestyle, or moral code, or even a part of themself. What will you take from Erasing the Line?
A real genuine love for Oscar Wilde’s work. He’s my favourite character so I got really interested in the real man and I just find him so fascinating but his story so tragic. I listened to The Picture of Dorian Gray on audiobook and loved it so much I had to go out and buy a physical copy of the book. I now want to put together a collection of all his work. It’s weirdly comforting to know that, in 30 years, I’ll still have this connection to a character and a show that made me so happy during a time that was really hard.
