BREAKING NEWS: BANGTAN AT WAR WITH TOOPEEHM
“It’s for your safety, honey.”
“I know, but I want to stay here with you. It’s my place!”
“Jeongguk, your place is to stay safe, so we don’t have to worry for your safety and well-being and we can focus on the war.” His mother hugged him tightly. “Your hyungs will take good care of you. Be good, and don’t worry about us, okay? We’ll be fine. We love you.”
“I love you.” He hugged her back tightly. “Don’t worry about me; I’ll be good.”
Jeongguk arrived at Bomnal Palace in the Kim Realms and was greeted by Queen Mishil. She led him to the sitting room where her sons were hanging out with their friends, the Empire’s other princes.
Six pairs of eyes met his large ones as he took in the room and its occupants.
“Hi, Jeongguk, right?” A tall, handsome young man came over to meet him warmly. “I’m Seokjin, but you can call me Jin like the others do.”
Jeongguk nodded.
“Okay.”
“We haven’t seen you much;  it’s usually Junghyun with the Emperor and Empress,” said a boy, smiling widely at him and waving. “But Junghyun hyung talks about you a lot.”
“He’s told me about all of you too,” said Jeongguk, smiling shyly.
“I’ll let you boys take care of Jeongguk then, while I make arrangements for you all,” said the queen, and left with a reassuring pat on his shoulder.

BREAKING NEWS: THE MAD MAJE RETURNS ON TOOPEEHM’S SIDE IN EHM-TAN’S WAR
“I’m back!”
“How’d school go?” Jin appeared from the direction of the kitchen, wiping his hands on his apron.
“It was fine,” Jungkook shrugged. “Lots of homework, even for the first day.”
“Let us know if you need help,” called Yoongi from the office/study area.
“Thanks, hyung!” he called back, following Jin to the snack he knew the oldest had prepared for him.
Hoseok and Jimin were talking quietly by the island. “With the added help from the Mad Maje’s forces, who knows how much longer this will drag on for. The first Maje War was five years long, and it’s already been two years-”
“DO YOU WANT TO TRY MY NEW CRACKERS RECIPE OR THE BROWNIES, JUNGKOOKIE?” asked Jin, loudly announcing their presence and shutting up the other two.
“Both, obviously,” grinned Jungkook.
They weren’t subtle, but they loved him and had readily adopted him as their little brother, doing their best to shield him from the news of the war and the unease it brought and raise him to be a good prince, and more importantly, a good person, like his parents wanted.
He had only been able to see them and Junghyun a couple times since he was sent away; all the princes of the Empire had moved to the highest-protected city in the Empire, the Jeon Kingdom’s capital, Bangtandosi, shortened by its natives to ‘Bangtan’ or ‘Tan’.
They lived in a large stone house in the old district, close to Bangtan University where the older princes attended, and a five-minute walk from Jungkook’s high school.
Visits with any of their family members were few and far between, with the war taking up most of the royals’ time and attention, and the need to keep the heirs to the Empire’s location secret.
They seven of them had consequently created a bond closer than just brothers as they adjusted to life as civilians in the middle of wartime. They would do anything for each other, no questions asked.

Unpublished- currently my only WiP is We are Forever Bulletproof: Truths
(shocking, i know, but i'm writing for the BTS fandom and hiatused my other fandom because i was overwhelmed with its WiPs. i'm trying to keep the pressure lowkey for my BTS fics. Feel free to request more, though!:D)
The air had a cool bite to it, signalling the start of the autumnal season. A gust of wind blew a falling yellow leaf into Jungkook’s face as he passed under the tree-lined avenue leading to Bangtan University.
He brushed it away, turning to inhale the aroma of coffee and freshly baked goods carried by the breeze. Ah, good old 00:00 cafe. Located just outside campus grounds, it was a popular spot for students to crash and study, or go on a date right after class, or to work in before classes started. Jungkook had written more than one paper there as he had access to immediate coffee refills.
Jin or one of his other hyungs would have been more than happy to run an in-home coffee service for him during his previous three years of secondary schooling, but he enjoyed people-watching and the academic vibes he got from studying at a coffee shop.
Jungkook stepped in and inhaled the more concentrated scent of fresh-brewed coffee, likely a fresh shipment imported from the Jung Archipelagos.
The line at the counter was surprisingly short (though maybe that was because this was only the first day of classes and students didn’t need as much caffeine to function) and he quickly ordered his usual caramel frappuccino.
The worker behind the counter nudged the shoulder of his coworker and gave her the order details while he attended to the customers at the register.
Jungkook leaned against the counter by the pick-up area and watched students crossing from the busy streets of downtown Bangtan to the lush grounds of Bangtan University’s campus. A fun little game he liked to play was deciding what year a student was in and what they were majoring in. He was pretty sure he’d just identified a fellow fourth-year PolSci major when his name was called.
“Jungkook?”
He turned to collect his drink and heard bells ringing. Little specks of glitter floated around Her head, a small smile on Her lips and Her light eyes sparkling as She met his awestruck gaze.
I love you.
The lights around Her head disappeared and the bells abruptly stopped ringing as She pushed his cup into his hand and wrapped his fingers around the curved sides, turning to take the newcomer’s order while Her coworker manned the coffee.
“Have a good day!” She tossed over her shoulder, smiling at the newcomer.
Jungkook sipped his drink, frowning as he exited the coffee shop, the bells ringing goodbye in a mocking way, a far cry from their melodic tinkling when he met Her.
That was a good frappuccino; he’d have to go back. For the coffee, too.

Fic I've written but haven't published/typed up- Godmother: Vixen
Ara, Age 15 (10 years ago)
"Jungkook, you know how you're going to be my official bodyguard in a couple years, when you turn 18?"
Jungkook's head was in Ara's lap, her fingers combing through the soft black strands. "...yeah?"
"So then I won't have Lee watching us all the time?"
"Yes? Where are you going with this?" "Patience, Kookie." Ara booped his nose, making him crinkle it at her.
"Well, then I'll be able to sneak out with you more. I won't have to make you sneak out to get my stuff anymore, and I can really begin my- our plans."
"But I don't mind it! I like it!" Jungkook protested. "It keeps you safe and under Lee's watch, where you're supposed to be."
"Yeah, but it's so boring. I don't get to practice my black belts on anything...you can join the underground rings but I can't, yet. Ugh, I wish you were older so I could polish the plan better."
"Slow and steady wins the race, Ara. You've got two years to finish learning all that stuff you want to know, as if Namjoon-hyung and Jin-hyung won't help."
"Yeah, but they'll be busy for appa, and it's too close; he'd be suspicious and they'll be in trouble even if I'm not. It's good for me to know hacking and strategy, anyways. You've been with me for my physical training, but I can't lead a gang just because I have five black belts in martial arts and a gun."
"Okay, you have a point, Bug."
"When do I not?" she smirked saucily at him.
~~~
(present day)
Jimin complied, following her to a small room that reminded him of a cabin. She pointed to the twin bed and shut the door behind her. Jimin didn't feel like a captive since there was a window large enough for him to crawl through, and there didn't appear to be any bars or lasers to stop him from doing so if he wished. But he didn't wish to; he was here for a reason, afterall.
Footsteps echoed in the hallway as someone came jogging up to Vixen. The tread was heavy, likely male, and the visitor greeted her in a male's voice.
"Hey Vix, I found out where he keeps the goods- why are you frown- ouch! VIX-mmph!"
That male voice sounded awfully familiar. Jimin frowned.
"Shh! I'm gagging you because he's next. Door!" hissed Vixen harshly. "If you'd checked outside before you snuck in, you'ld've seen his car!"
Jimin strained his ears as the whispers softened and moved down the hallway. However, he'd managed to drop a bug on Vixen's back as he followed her, so he pulled out his receiver and shamelessly eavesdropped.
"I came over the rooves tonight so I didn't see. I'm sorry, VIx, that was careless; I should've known better. I'll check 360 degrees next time, yakseokhae."
That was definitely JK.
"Good. Yeesh, oppa, you almost gave everything away! I had Han ready to rush you with his knife to slow you down!"
Oppa?! Why was Vixen so close to JK?
"Sorry, Vixen. But I found out where he keeps the goods, and I'm getting mine tomorrow, so I need to make sure the others won't be visible when it's done."
...the blacklight tattoos each member got when they were inducted into Bangtan? He'd thought JK was a reliable asset to Bangtan, so he'd invited him to get it. JK was obviously Vixen's spy in Bangtan, but why?...most of JK's time was spent on his bodyguarding duties with Ara.
Unless...Vixen was going to take out Ara to hit Bangtan and Grey? But both of them were allied with her, that didn't make sense. And he knew JK would never hurt or let anyone or anything hurt Ara.
Clearly more investigation was required.
Please feel free to ignore this ask that came out of the blue, but if you don't mind my asking, how long have you been writing and how often do you do it? 👀 It's just that you churn out so many sctir fics of top quality that I wonder how you manage to do it frequently.
♪( ´▽`) I don’t mind at all!! I think I’ve been publishing/writing fanfic since around 2012 or 2013, so around 10 years now? My oldest fics still exist somewhere out there lmao
In terms of how often, it really varies haha. I’m one of those ‘I only write when I’m inspired’ kind of people so my pace fluctuates a lot. At my best I might write every day for a week, but then I might also go weeks or months without really writing anything significant (which is why I struggle with ongoing or long fics). But that does mean when I am feeling inspired, I can post a lot! It really just boils down to me having no patience for my own fics and learning how to work around that hahaha. In general tho I think I average out to having a decent writing session maybe once or twice a week? Smth like that?? I also write pretty quickly when I’ve got a goal/structure in mind, so that helps!
first line meme (published fics)
Rules: List the first lines of your last 20 published stories. (If you have less than 20, just list them all!) See if there are any patterns. Choose your favorite opening line. Tag some people to play the next round!
tagged by @jake-amy!! I haven’t been tagged in a game like this since like. maybe 2013?? so this is wild for me!!!! thanks so much!!
I have 38 published fic over five different fandoms and idk if that’s a good thing? if anyone wants to know, I’ve published a total of 353,637 words on ao3 and idek how many words I published on lj lol some of these will be two sentences, but the second part is a completion of the first and I think both are necessary! okay here we go, going in reverse order:
20. A year passes and Clarke opens the closet door and is almost surprised when one of the trash bags falls from a high shelf on top of her. darling, we outshone the stars bellarke
19. Jinki grows up with dreamscapes in his back pocket and a blaster in his right hand.  you knew you’d know me onho/shinee
18. Monty hasn’t spoken for days. scatter what remains minty
17. Miller is walking across campus, earbuds in place and matching his stride with beat, when someone grabs his arm. kisses on my knuckles minty
16. Her first memory is at five. trust me harper/monty friendship
15. “Oh my god,” Clarke says, bending down to pull the lasagne out of the oven. lasagne bellarke (connected to a winter vacation)
14. The car is packed, and they’re waiting on Clarke. a winter vacation bellarke (connected to lasgane)
13. A list of chores lies on Bellamy’s bedside table, a small, crudely crafted piece of furniture. everything comes undone bellarke
12. See, Monty might be younger, but that doesn’t make him different in any way. to live in our world, thoroughly bellamy + wells + monty brofic
11. It’s seven-thirty am. a better way home minty (sequel for to live in our world)
10. “I’m not cut out for love or romance,” Hawke says mournfully into her mug. now I’m found again vhawke
9. To say she loves Kirkwall is a lie, Hawke thinks. She knows that to say she loves anything is a stretch. go forward slowly vhawke
8. “Adaar makes horrible first impressions,” Varric tells her, “so don’t take it to heart. She’ll like you, trust me.” please picture me vhawke
7. “Yeah, I’ll have the number three, the fourteen, um, one of the twenty-one, and, you know what, can you make that two orders of the number three, and then…” Kate scans the menu in her mind.  how shall I correct it? kathony
6. Snow gently falls outside, and every so often tree branches scrape against the windows. things take the time they take kathony
5. The sun is shining and the water is calm; what’s meant to be a beautiful Sunday the week before the Fastnet Race has quickly turned around.  there be fury on the waves kathony
4. “You know, he was not always like this.” a tear of tremulous emotion kathony
3. Trouble in paradise comes after three months. ocean solitudes are blest kathony (sequel for fury on the waves)
2. The library is the quietest room at Aubrey Hall. sigh a sigh kathony
1. There must be a mistake. half afraid to hope kathony
out of all of these, just here, my fav is actually 9, for go forward slowly, because like, the theme was very much about how a home is made, and how you might not love that home but it can still be your home, even after trauma. I just think I started out really strongly!! and followed through on the themes I wanted to! I don’t particularly see any patterns, but if someone sees one, please lmk!!
to anyone reading this, genuinely, please feel free to consider yourself tagged. I’m persistently dumb and can never think of people when on the spot, so please do this if you want to!!!
for fanfic asks - 1 and 8!
1. What is your most popular fic?
there are two possible answers to this! one is Fill Me With Your Poison, which is a Venom fic, and which is my most kudos'd work. but honestly it only really took off because of the timing (i published it at the height of the film's popularity), so its popularity doesn't really correlate at all with its overall quality lol. i don't think it's bad, but it's not really exceptional in any way.
the other answer is Roses are Red, and Violets are Gay, which is a Red vs Blue fic, and which is the second oldest fic on my account (published on july 7, 2013!), and is my fic with the most hits (and third most kudos). once upon a time, i believe it was one of the top 20 most kudos'd RvB fics on AO3, but it has since fallen to page 4 lol. i published this one just after finishing my first year in undergrad :')
that RvB fic is actually a huge milestone work for me because it's the first time in my life i wrote a story that i thought was actually genuinely funny, and with natural sounding dialogue (i'm still grateful to RvB and to Rooster Teeth in general for honestly teaching me how to write humor). it was a real turning point for me as a writer. i feel like this was when i unlocked the ability to understand character voices. i still think of it as basically my first "good" fic.
8. What kind of document do you use to you write? Microsoft Word? Google Docs? Straight in the AO3 text box?
oh dear, this answer is going to be a little messy 😅. for many years, i wrote all of my stuff in microsoft word. i still have some projects there! but in recent years, i've switched to keeping most of my drafts on google docs because it's easier to access them from multiple devices, including my phone if i think of a great line to add when it's 4am and i'm in bed.
i also draft some stuff in the 4thewords text editor because 4thewords gamifies writing lol so it helps motivate me on some projects. but usually i back up everything i write on there either on word or gdocs. 4thewords is absolutely my favorite platform to use when editing, though, because my current favorite editing strategy is retyping the entire story from scratch, and 4thewords literally rewards me for it.
Fic Rec Friday
Okay.  Finally have made it back from my adventure (and i’m three miles short of driving 1k today…. Let’s just say I did not enjoy seeing the “Welcome to West Virginia” sign three times as the roads kept winding too much when I just wanted to get home.  Also playing Country Roads got banned after the second rendition because “we already listened to it twice”.  Friends…. If you’re ever on a sixteen hour drive there’s gonna be more than one repeat song during that time. Probably).
Ahem.
Anyways, another blast from the past this friday.
Title: Oldest Story In The World by Elyssblair
Fandom: Eureka
Pairing: Nathan Stark/Jack Carter
Year published on AO3: 2013
Other tags of note: Sentinel/Guide AU.
AO3 Summary:
After fifteen years as an un-bonded Sentinel, Jack Carter has come to terms with the reality that either his Guide doesn’t exist or is one of the many who chose not to join the Sentinel-Guide Union. Between his daughter's rebellions, his trigger happy deputy and the town’s insane scientists, Jack doesn’t have time to dwell on it. Then Nathan Stark comes to Eureka. Jack recognizes him immediately as a Guide. An unregistered Guide, which means by custom and law, Jack isn’t allowed to acknowledge him as a Guide. Normally, it wouldn’t be a problem. But Nathan is Jack’s Guide. Plan A: Avoid Stark. Except, rogue weather bots and the secret schemes of the town's residents make that impossible. Unfortunately, he hasn’t come up with plan B.
Why I recommend: I have a fondness for this fandom and pairing which when combined with my favorite trope of all time (sentinel/guide AU) this is an easy recommendation.  There’s a lot of sentinel/guide fics out there but this is one of my favorites.
That moment I can’t recall for sure when I first touched fanfics. And then you get this long post because I rambled about trying to recall and finding the clues.
Read more, but yeah if you’re curious, it’s pretty much my history with reading then writing fics, the fandoms and years, with one two little notes on what I was doing original writing wise.
Long story short: I first started reading fics in (most likely second half of) 2008 and first started writing by the end of 2009, 2009-2011 was a very productive time and it was in YGO GX fandom, then I had a burn out for multiple reason, and it’s by first half of 2013 that I finally had another good productive time with BBC Merlin (while I had mostly left YGO GX, with one fic I still open to finish in some ways), end of 2013 I started writing for Pokemon, and then for a few years I’ve picked up fandoms but never really went far, like I had short term burst of inspiration energy, and long term was just very slow updating because I didn’t wish to quit any of my fics, and then in 2017 I discovered DGM and by July 2017 I was writing for it and have been quite productive since then, especially the first year or so, a big part because it was like, the first big love I have had since BBC Merlin, and it grew as my all time favorite.
A big part of Assassin’s Light being easy to write for a period of time is because it’s half DGM, of course as you noticed things did need to slow down for me, but my love and inspiration for DGM has not lessened. MDZS did come and quickly made me fall so very deeply in love with it, I don’t hide that I love it a little bit more than DGM, but at present time, both DGM and MDZS are my focus, with a slightly easier time writing for MDZS.
(Everything else is still on-going, but very, very, very slow).
The problem is, my files for my fics, I moved them at some point, or copy paste, the oldest dates from 2014 which is two years after I stopped college, which is likely also due to how I changed laptop and such along the years. And the other problem is, I once left ffnet then came back, so I can’t see anymore the actual, initial publish dates.
The best I can use is the date of when I joined ffnet, which is in 2009, but this also places me at 17. I could have been writing my first fic before that, but I wouldn’t have been able to post it until then, and I don’t feel like I had multiple chapters to post, so it is likely that I started writing fics at 16/17. It was my second (of three) years of high school at that age range.
As I feel like I can recall I was reading fics in middle school, the best I can guess is that I started reading fics in my last year of middle school (14 to 15), probably toward the end of it, which kind of feels about right? But that means I spend around a year just reading, like if it’s at the end of middle school, it’s close to when I got to 15, so 2007 (as I would have had my 15th birthday in 2007).
Which sounds about right, I do feel “2007″ is the year I remember. In 2008 I would have had my 16th birthday, and it would have been a year or so since I’ve started reading fics, but the ffnet profile says I joined 11 December 2009, so that’s past my 17th birthday, and makes it easily two years since I started reading fics.
Which blows my mind a bit because I was convinced I started writing not long after, but apparently, not? Like I don’t recall having posted elsewhere before ffnet, so in all logic, it is in December 2009 that I made my account, and likely posted my first fic not long after. So however long I was reading, I was already 17 when I first wrote fics (or late 16 if I started writing a bit but didn’t post).
It is possible I have been mixing up my fic dates with original write, as in that case, I am certain I started writing my first novel in the end of middle school, so the “2007″ in my brain is quite likely when I started writing my first novel (it was end of middle school, so the last few months of being 14 and around being 15, which does all place the year as 2007). Which does make more sense, now that I’m trying to remember, I think I didn’t know yet fanfics when I started writing my original novel?
In short: 2007 aka 14-15, I was writing the start of my original novel (I didn’t finish back then), and somewhere 15-16 so in 2008 I started reading fics (and it was my first year of high school, which, actually does fit better the settings of the school library I vaguely recall). And roughly one year after, in 2009 when I was 17, I made my ffnet account and posted my first fic (which was written either on the spot, or started a few weeks before I made my account, but in any case I was 17 when I wrote my first fic).
For the record: that first fic was Angel and Sephirot in YGO GX, although Eventful Journey followed soon after, so both were completed somewhere in 2010 as I remember I was writing quickly back then, like it was already December 2009 so early 2010 I was very, very likely writing and posting for both fics, and by the end of 2010 I had completed Angel and Sephirot. I know my next multi chap was Hellish Chronicles, and I can find review reply from 2011 in my ffnet inbox. I do think I had some time between Angel and Sephirot and Hellish Chronicle, so that’s why I do feel I finished that first fic at most mid 2010 (and continued more slowly working on Eventful Journey).
I was writing other fics that I had adopted during/after my writing on Hellish Chronicle (which I haven’t put back as I lost contact with the original author, so out of respect I haven’t put them back up), and by September 2011 I can find messages where I mention I was working hard for the start of the second year of college, which does fit since I dropped college after I finished my second year in June 2012, and this also really slowed me down when it came to fics.
In December 2013, I can see the “oldest” fic is Always by your side in BBC Merlin, which is the first I had reposted, and my AO3 was made on February 2013, and I recall that I removed my fic from ffnet when there was some crackdown on fics, but only because I could post them on AO3, so this means I removed my fics from ffnet somewhere between february and december of 2013 (at most, from february to december, less if I didn’t remove them right away). And I started writing for BBC Merlin in 2013 (which seem to be end of 2013), which was after maybe one year or one and a half since I properly wrote anything multi chaptered (while some of the last YGO GX writing I did, one shots, were dated October 2013 so there were still months).
2007 (14-15) is first dabble in original novel, 2008 (15-16) is when I first started reading fics (and never stopped since then!), December 2009 (17) is when I created my ffnet account and so could post fics, first half of 2010 (still 17) is when I likely wrote and finished Angel and Sephirot, 2010-2011 (17-18) is when I was writing for YGO GX, end of 2001-first half of 2012 is when I had too much going on to write as much and so spent months either not writing, or like, writing one chapter every few weeks/months, but also it’s second half of 2012 that I started working again on my first novel, February 2013 I made my AO3 account, in July 2013 I first started writing for BBC Merlin, October 2013 I had written some one shots for YGO GX, but was mostly writing for BBC Merlin.
Let’s see for when I started dabbling in other fandoms. Pokemon is December 2013, December 2014 and early 2015 is when I touched KKM (didn’t go far back then in the fics though), end of 2015 is when I wrote a bit for FNAF (same, didn’t go far), March 2016 is when I started on White Collar fic (once more, didn’t go far), (and March 2016 was also when I first posted my first novel), August 2016 is when I started on Natsume Yuujinchou fic (went a few chapters with not too much time between updates), May 2017 is when I started working on Outlast fic (didn’t go far), and it’s in July of 2017 that I finally touched DGM, which soon became my focus.
Assassin’s Light was started in January 2019, or well, was posted then, I had started writing for it before, through end of 2018, but yeah early 2019 was Assassin’s Light, and in general since 2017 I have been mostly focused on DGM. And then October 2019 I posted Shadows Symphonie, and since then I mostly focused on MDZS while also working on my DGM fics when I can; and leaving everything else to work on whenever I have a higher dose of inspiration-energy. Which is rarer, but I haven’t quitted my other fics.
All in all, I was relatively able to be quick from 2009 to 2011, but college and personal stuff really burned me out, I lost interest in YGO GX especially as it felt different to how I came to write by 2013 (which is why my first two fics are the only one that I might rewrite one day), BBC Merlin stole my heart and brought me back to writing fics properly, I wrote more for it compared to all other fandoms that followed until DGM. All those other fandoms, I had a burst of inspiration, but the actual drive didn’t last, which I also suspect is because it did take me years to feel more, recovered. That and I was working on my original writing too, so. And then when I came into DGM, it brought me a large dose of inspiration, and I’ve wriiten more for it than any other fandom.
When you look at it, I have indeed the most fics in DGM (especially as I did events), then it’s BBC Merlin (which is still one of my all time favorite, alongside DGM and MDZS), and then it’s YGO GX (which is due to how I was more active very early on then the burn out hit me).
And while in number I don’t have as many MDZS fics, in spirit I certainly place it as same level as DGM.
Fanfic Writer Appreciation (and a little self love)
Sooooo, as talked about I wanted to do a little promo. I may not always be my favorite writer, but I try to be one of my cheerleaders. And well, if you’re here you obviously have some interest in what I’m up to.
SO! Here’s a list of my currently-published WIPs and some info about them, in the order that I’ve updated them, most recent to oldest.
Feel free to ask questions about any of them!
Dog Whistle (Ao3 || FFN) - started off as a prompt from @snackarey when I reblogged some Soulmate AUs. This one was a prompt for soulmates (Zack/Kunsel) who felt what each other felt - like pain. Needless to say, this went into a canon divergent AU where Kunsel felt some of what Zack was going through when Hojo got a hold of him after Nibelheim. And saved him, setting off an ever-increasing list of revolutionary consequences. It’s nearly 58K, and though I’m a little stuck I’m looking forward to seeing where it goes.
Dewprism: Journey to the [Relic] (Ao3 || FFN) - this actually has a lot more written than I’ve posted, I just got a little frustrated because well... the fandom is teeny tiny and there’s no real feedback. But! It’s an interesting piece. It’s a semi-novelization where I’m taking the old PS1 Classic from Squaresoft, Threads of Fate/Dewprism and merging the two storylines. Basically... you can’t play the game anymore unless you got it from the PSN for your PSP or... PS2, I think? Or emulate it, of course, you can do that. And I wanted to bring the experience to more people, because it’s got such a great story.
It’s Not a Game (Ao3 || FFN) - this is my Avengers/FF7 crossover, and funny story, it was actually born out of a comment back on my old Genesis RP blog about how Genesis would totally be Tony Stark’s favorite character if he played Crisis Core. It’s turned into a full blown fixit I have a type and I actually have like, 90% of the next chapter done, it just doesn’t feel quite right so I haven’t posted it. And am, of course, stuck. There’s a case of choice paralysis here; the premise is that, in the MCU, FF7 is a series like it is in our world, and Tony is a fan. So he goes to make a simulation to do a self-insert... only he somehow transports himself (and Bruce) to a dimension where it’s real. A “Stark-insert” someone called it; and it does use a lot of “Self-Insert” tropes, actually. There’s just so many ways it could go that I’m stuck on choosing exactly how to progress here.
Party of Five (Ao3 || FFN) - the MMO AU! This was actually originally a prompt @up-sideand-down got, that I got permission to take off with. It’s a modern AU AGSZC where they meet online playing this MMO I made up that’s based off of FF7 and modeled after a mashup of like, me studying WoW and my experiences playing SWTOR. I’ve actually got some ideas of where it’s going, I just got too caught up in technicalities and need to reroute it back to the relationships going on.
Welcome to FF7 (series link, Ao3) - this is me hashing out basically what I think went down pre-games. Most of it is headcanon, I cannot stress that enough. It’s based off of the little we know, of course, but there’s just so much we don’t that it’s mostly headcanon. Tons of OCs. It’s a whole series, and they overlap - different sections that follow different departments, mostly. The base story is Welcome to ShinRa (Ao3 || FFN) and that follows the man who will become President Shinra from back when they first discover mako energy. I’ve also got Welcome to the Science Department (Ao3 || FFN) which starts off with college students Gast and Grimoire and how they get drawn into the beginnings of what becomes ShinRa Electric.
And last but not least, honorable mention to Times of Change (Ao3) - this was actually a piece inspired by @deadcatwithaflamethrower‘s Re-Entry series. I desperately need to reread that before I can hope to continue this, but... one day. One day.... I don’t suggest reading it right now, my headcanons have changed and it needs an overhaul. But you’ll see eventually.
And now... the WIPs you haven’t seen. (Under a cut)
By fandom, just to keep things straight, but in no particular order otherwise.
Compilation of FF7
The Snowball Effect (Ao3 || FFN) ... sequel? continuation? - as one of the gift exchange presents I’ve just done this past month, it is definitely standalone as is, but if I ever figure out where I want to take it, I’ll continue that one. It was just far too much fun.
The Price of Freedom - the sequel to To Be Human, which... I’m looking forward to, but I really burnt myself out on TBH so it’s going to be longer than anticipated before I approach this one. TBH definitely stands on its own, but there were some loose ends left to tie up, so we’ll see how that goes. And when it goes, when I’m ready to approach that again. TBH needs some editing, too... lots of work there.
The Unnamed Pokemon/FF7 crossover that I’ve talked about for... a couple years now (yikes) but now actually have a plot for. It’s very interesting to me, putting Pokemon on Gaia, and seeing how that changes everything. Because like, they’d have presumably used Mew’s DNA since there’s no Jenova (I can’t see them using Deoxys, which would be the closer parallel) and since there’s no Chaos, Grimoire is still alive. Which means no extra Drama between Lucrecia and Vincent - and really, there shouldn’t be the stress between Vincent and Hojo over her being sick because Mew would theoretically be much more compatible with humans than Jenova was.
What I’m saying is Seph has three parents and at least one set of grandparents and a much more stable Sephiroth (and Genesis and Angeal, thanks to Lucrecia teaming up with Gillian) leads to some very interesting changes. Like deciding they don’t want to fight the Wutai war anymore. >_>
Hold My Flower - a timetravel fic featuring our one and only flowergirl, who has had enough of people messing up her planet and refuses to just... let it die. She is, unquestionably, a force of nature. No fragile flower to be found here, this is the gal you see in the OG who threatened a mob boss and meant it. Heaven help anyone who gets in her way. She’s going to save the world. Possibly in a Turk Suit, don’t look at me.
The Long Game - Reeve goes back in time, and holy crap this one is a monster I am truly intimidated by so it’s gonna take a while for me to get going on that. XD But basically, similar premise to the above - the world isn’t healing and someone has to do something, so Reeve is nominated due to his position in ShinRa and potential to... he’d say “influence” but let’s call a spade a spade - manipulate people and events to a more favorable outcome.
A third BIT fic is one that I started writing with my friend @askshivanulegacy back in... damn, somewhere between 2011-2013, before we switched to writing SWTOR fic together. It’s one where Zack is sent back in time, and the differences in him post-Hojo change things even before he can start deliberately changing anything. But I got permission to take and remake that, so I intend to, one day. It was Good Stuff. And you can never have too much timetravel.
Dragon Ball Z
So, this is an oooooold fandom of mine - the first fanfics I ever wrote (under a different name, no I’m not telling XD it was ten years ago) were for DBZ, and definitely the first ones I ever read, back in the days of dial up. And I read a couple interesting takes on Chichi/Vegeta fic... and I was talking with @vorpalgirl about it and said I’d love to try my hand at something with that one day. I think they have the potential to be a really great pair (don’t get me wrong, I appreciate the canon pairings but those two have a lot of potential) so... yeah someday I might dip my toes back into Z. It’s on the wishlist, as well as reviving and cleaning up an old unfinished work of mine. Someday~
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Seven Years Lost - this one I’ve been debating a long time, and even did a little on! It’s basically how I rationalize what happens when Link pulls the Master Sword out and - well, spoilers but it’s a really old game so - when he comes out as a teenager and is immediately able to handle a nearly-adult body. It involves a dreamscape scenario where he communicates with his past incarnations and learns from them, and from sharing dreams with Zelda due to their bond.
Sailor Moon (manga/Crystal based)
Second Chances - I read a lot of SM fanfic back in the day, and my favorite ones were... more real? Like, there were more consequences to these 14 year old kids out there fighting for their lives and sometimes losing them. I’d like to tell a story through Minako/Venus’ eyes primarily, covering what that’s like, and then I also just really want a happy ending for the senshi/shittenou? So... yay canon divergence, lol. You guys know the deal by now. XD
Star Wars: Legends Era
United We Stand - SWTOR fanfic, baby! Basically, I’m just dying to see the eight classes cross over each other, and I will bend canon to do it. For anyone that’s played the original class story lines, there is some cross over but believe me when I say there were huge opportunities that were let drop by nature of the game. Just with the two Jedi stories alone... but that’s #spoilers for a not-as-old game so I’ll leave that be and only elaborate if asked.
(And do feel free to ask about any of these! I’d love to hash them out more.)
For the writing ask thing // 4,8,14,21
Hi Nonnie! Ooh thank you 😊
4) Have you ever been published, or do you want to be published - does self publishing count? If so, I published my book back in 2018 on amazon. I have always wanted to go for the traditional publishing route too, though. So who knows, if I ever manage to finish my novel, I might try a few publishing houses. I’ve just been a little weary of it since having a bad experience with it when I was a teenager.
8) Oldest WIP - ooh that is tough. Because it really depends on what fanfiction account we’re talking about. From my cortexikid one on ao3, my oldest WIP (that I actually intend on finishing) is Say Anything...Except That, a Spideypool fic that has been around since January 2015 😧 The oldest one that has been abandoned is You Have Failed a This Feli(city) an Olicity fic from November 2013. The other account I had from ff.net on the other hand...? Yeah. We won’t talk about that 😅
14) How do you deal with self-doubts - god, Nonnie, I wish I could tell you. I constantly have self-doubt, it never, ever goes away. Every time I post anything, from something small and silly, to a larger, more serious piece, I’m convinced it’s complete and utter rubbish. It’s really, really hard for me to force myself to post just about anything. But I do. I guess, for me, dealing with self-doubt is just saying a giant “feck you” to it. Yeah, I doubt myself, but I post the thing anyway. So in a way, that is me dealing with it. Just...accepting that it’s part of the process, but still following through with whatever I’ve written. This doesn’t always work, and I certainly don’t recommend it for everyone, but sometimes, a ‘fuck it, may as well put this out there’ attitude helps.
21) My favourite character/characters to write - I love dynamics. I love snarky, bickering relationships. Yin and yangs. So, I’ve been drawn to characters like Richie Tozier and Eddie Kaspbrak (Reddie). Deadpool and Spider-Man (Spideypool). And Penelope Alvarez and Schneider (Alvareider), to name a few. I adore the flirting that masquerades as banter/bickering/arguing. I love when the characters have such strong comedic elements but are then offset by a more serious undertone. I love cheeky little bastards and their long-suffering (but not really) counterparts. They’ve been a blast to write 😊
Thanks so much for the ask, Nonnie! It was fun ♥️
I’m commenting on chapter 61 now, which means we’re almost at NaNo 2012. (I finished chapter 62 at the end of October and started NaNoing a bit after starting chapter 63.) I can’t wait to get to talk about what changed from the NaNo draft! Especially when the chapter plan/NaNo draft/published fic really start to diverge.
...Which leaves me looking for the oldest version of the NaNo draft that I still have. I remember copying the document into Dropbox just after NaNo for safekeeping, but it seems I overwrote the Dropbox version again in February 2015. I also had a USB drive that I used to transfer the document between my desktop computer and my laptop, back when I still used a desktop computer ever. But I seem to have copied the fic document onto it in 2017, so that’s useless.
The 2015 version is actually a pretty acceptable compromise. Thanks to chapters 64 and 65 taking more than two years, I was still working on chapter 65 in February 2015, so there are only a couple of actually lost NaNo chapters if that’s all I have. (I had made light edits to the remaining chapters, just fixing typos and such, but they’re very much almost entirely intact; chapters 68 and 69 are even still both named Ryan, after I failed to actually get to the bit with Ryan in chapter 68.) Buuuut I also switched laptops in summer 2013, when I was not too far into working on chapter 64 - so my old-old laptop, Yukimenoko, probably has a version from 2013 on it, with an only partially-edited 64. Chapter 63 is almost definitely a lost cause, but I don’t think I made any interesting changes to that one anyway, since it was pre-the sudden character growth that happened as I was editing chapter 64 where I realized there was a lot of work to be done here.
Soooo I guess I’ll have to go see if Yukimenoko still runs! Last time I tried to turn it on it was not happy.
First Line Challenge
RULES: List the first lines of the last ten stories you published. Look to see if there are any patterns that you notice yourself, and see if anyone else notices any! Then tag some friends.
I was tagged by @gracenm! Since I know I haven’t published 10 new fics since the last time I did this, I’ll do 7 published fics, and 3 wips.
1. “’Zu-ko. Zu-ko. Koooo.’” - From the Zuko & Azula fic I’m writing (and probably to be posted in a couple weeks or so)
2. “She was just grumbling about math.” - From that Buffy & Angel fic I’m now steadily working on
3. “It had not taken Loki long to get bored of being King.” - From Torture Loki: The Fic (which I’ve kind of haven’t look at in about 6 months on as I try to wrap up other fics)
4.  “The first time a minister calls Iroh ‘the prince’, Fire Lord Zuko stares at her blankly.” - Call Uncle
5.  “It was almost over.” - One Step Away (incidentally, this is what I call this fic in my file folder. This is also several years old, probably written in 2014.)
6.  “ Loki nervously slicked back his hair and adjusted his armor.” - The Sinking Feeling of Anticipation
7.  “Barry hadn't noticed Cisco tampering with the speed bazooka as they fought.” - more than one truth
8.  “There were days when the bitterness flooded her. ” - Caitlin and the Coma Boy
9.  “ Jane furiously scribbled out another set of equations, only to have her pencil lead snap off to lay among the crumbs of what was left of her most recent eraser. ” - Just Set Me Free (This line would the oldest of the lot, probably also written in 2014/2013?)
10. “’We have a problem.’” - El Pollo Hijo
I guess I like to start in the middle of the action? And it’s usually something short and snappier, at least post-2014.
I tag: @veliseraptor, @thelightofthingshopedfor, @mikkeneko, and @portraitoftheoddity
I was tagged by the wonderful @afangirlfantasy. Thank you so much for doing this! I’m ordering them from recent to oldest, which is going to be interesting because that’s about 5 years worth of fics
edit: literally while I was working on this, @londonfoginacup tagged me in it too! Thanks bub!
1. There’s no fair in farewell (2018, Larry)
Sometimes, when he looks down, Louis envies them.
2. all the ways to say I love you (2017, various)
I could really use a hug, Harry types, stares at the words, the cursor blinking.
3. and they call it puppy love (2017, Ziam)
Zayn’s always been a dog person.
4. let’s be alone together (2017, Ziam)
He first meets him at the airport.
5. guess I always push my luck when I’m with you (2016, Ziam)
It's a dare, really.
6. then he just leaned forward and kissed me (2015, Ziam)
It's an accident.
7. midnight doesn’t last forever (2013, Ziam)
It's not Liam's fault that he wakes up feeling utterly confused.
8. there’s an awful lot of breathing room (2013, Ziam)
“Are you sure?” Liam asks for what feels like the hundredth time, and Zayn smiles, nods before he has to succumb to a coughing fit.
9. there’s an awful lot of breathing room (2013, unrequited Zarry)
It's not that he doesn't know.
10. a game that I’m destined to lose (2012, Ziam)
Liam's a nice guy.
So, those are my first lines! And well, the pattern I’ve noticed is that they’re all really freaking short, lmao. I always try and start with something that makes people want to read, and apparently that means short vague sentences!
Thanks so much for the tags lovelies, this was a lot of fun!
I’ve no idea who to tag, so please feel free to consider yourself tagged if you want to do this!
Enigma Research
Now that my Codebreaker/WW2 AU Enigma is finally, after almost four years and over 250k words, drawing to a close, I though it might be of interest to its readers and others who are writing fic set in this particular era to reveal some of my sources for the extensive research I undertook to learn more about the period and, hopefully, capture it adequately.
Huge gratitude goes to my brilliant beta rifleman_s who not only checked grammar and spelling (English not being my native language), but also offered valuable Brit-picking and, most importantly, fact checking when it came to historical accuracy. All remain inaccuracies or deliberate anachronisms are mine.
While I tried to stay true to historical events most of the time, in some instances I tweaked their timeline a little for dramatic effect or to better integrate them into the story. This is particularly relevant for the discovery of the German messages that opened the door to finally breaking the Lorenz Cipher. They were indeed intercepted in late August 1941, but of course their significance was not noticed by Jennifer Wilson, who is fictional. The explosion of a left-over bomb in Russell Square is fictional, too, although there were many similar occurrences all over London at the time.
A lucky guess was the address of Sherlock’s and John’s billet in Bletchley. Since the town looks a lot different now than it did in the 1940s (Milton Keynes, the town Bletchley is now a part of, didn’t even exist back then: it was built from 1967 onwards), I looked at old maps and aerial photographs, and decided that the oldest parts of the town must have been built along the major roads. I picked Buckingham Road, and was very pleased to discover during a later visit to the Bletchley Park Museum that there were indeed lodgings for staff of Station X on Buckingham Road.
Two other helpful factual sources were my two remaining grandparents: my maternal grandmother (born 1924) and paternal grandfather (born 1920) who, albeit not living in England at the time but in Germany, were invaluable when it came to remiscing about what life was like during WW2, as seen from both a soldier’s and a civilian’s perspective.
Apart from these helpers, I researched a lot, and enjoyed said research immensely. Here are some of my sources. I’m sure I forgot to list some, particularly those I consulted online. If you have questions about any of them, or my research or the fic in general, I’d be happy to answer them.
Oooh, awesome! Thanks.
I’ve included already answered ones below.
A Writer’s Ask Game
agwitow:
Send me an ask with the number(s) you’d like me to answer!
The Basics1.     Do you listen to music when you write?2.     Are you a pantser or plotter?
Started out as a pantser but after a few fic, I decided to give plotting a try. Am now a fully committed plotter.
3.     Computer or pen and paper?
Definitely computer. My fingers tend to cramp up even when I write a little bit and when I write a page or so in a notebook (I often carry a notebook with me when I go somewhere but don’t want to drag the laptop with me), about 3/4th of it illegible to anyone who isn’t me. In a way, that’s a good thing I suppose considering some of my smuttier fics, but overall it’s just a pain. And I always get disappointed when I get around to typing out the notes because it looks like a lot more when written out!
4.     Have you ever been published, or do you want to be published?
No, I have never been published. Maybe one day I’ll try my hand at it, but right now I don’t feel like my writing is “good enough” yet. No idea for an original novel either.
5.     How much writing do you get done on an average day?6.     Single or multiple POV?7.     Standalone or series?8.     Oldest WIP
Oldest WIP I’ve written for or does plotting also count? If it’s just written, then it’s probably my abandoned Down the Rabbit Hole (FFnet | AO3). I just... got stuck. And it was so incredibly frustrating and really stopped me from enjoying anything fic-related that I finally just said to hell with it and dropped it. I just checked and I stopped working on it in 2013... I still have the outline and everything though, so who knows?
9.     Current WIP10.  Do you set yourself deadlines?
The Specifics11.  Books and/or authors who influenced you the most
To be honest, I have no idea. I don’t know, maybe I’m rare but I’ve never been one of those people who held specific authors up as their ideal. I used to read a lot of books (nowadays less so, because 1) am adult and have to adult and 2) because I read fanfic and often would rather write my own fic than read a book) and have some favorites  (all fiction) but nothing that really stands out.
12.  Describe your perfect writing space13.  Describe your writing process from idea to polished
Hahaha! Are you sure you want to know?
Okay, so I get an idea. Often when I’m half asleep/dozing, in the shower or just doing something mindlessly. The ideas are usually specific scenes that I can see play out in my head, but occasionally it’s just a conversation/some dialogue. If I like it, I’ll try to force more by really focusing on it. If the muse wishes it, that tends to work. I’m rarely super excited about an idea that I’ll start working on it right away, and prefer to let it roll around for a while. See if it keeps popping up and more details are added. If it’s worth my time and energy, I suppose.
Once that happens, I’ll start writing down notes. I use OneNote to organize my fic ideas/plotting and have one notebook that’s simply for ideas; one section per idea and depending on the idea, it’ll just be a stream of consciousness (often peppered with questions for myself) or a bit more organized in different pages. Again, depending on how excited I am about the idea, this can be done in a day or it can take weeks/months where I’ll occasionally add some info.
Then, when I feel like I want to work on it some more, I’ll start to delve into the details. When is it set? What’s the beginning, middle and end? Which events do I want include but have no idea where yet? Is there specific dialogue or are there actions I want to maybe include at one point? If it’s an AU, AR or AT, I’ll start working on the differences from canon (who is in it, what’s their role, how does it deviate from canon). How long do I think this fic will be? I need to set a max number of chapters for myself, otherwise the story will just keep growing and I’ll keep adding stuff and in the end it’ll read like I just came up with more and more stuff simply so I wouldn’t have to end the story, rather than telling the story I wanted to tell in the beginning.
Anyway, I start creating pages for the chapters and fill in the few things I already know. At this point I often also involve my beta and discuss the fic idea with her. Everything from that conversation goes into the ‘brainstorm’ section and I’ll work on the questions and suggestions that arose during the conversation. Then, I’ll start focusing on filling up the chapters with general outlines. That can be anything from “scene 1 Sam telling Jack (Sam pov); scene 2 introspection about changes (Jack pov)” to a paragraphed summary or even a scene completely written out. Sometimes it’s just “some shippy stuff here”, to let me know that at one point I need to lighten it up or bring them closer together. I go over all the chapter pages that way, but don’t necessarily fill them all out. I also make one page with a chapter overview, which is usually the numbered chapters with one or two lines about the content so I can see in one quick glance which things need working on.
More thinking on the fic idea, sometimes even when sleeping and brainstorming with the beta usually follows, which in turn results in adding more details. The chapter pages get more specifics or maybe a “don’t forget to mention [character]”  or “now [# weeks] pregnant, mention that/include symptoms”. Also, depending on the story idea, I might need to do research. That can be canon/fanon stuff, but also scientific stuff, maybe a different language, create background information for original/rarely used canonical  characters, timeline, locations, RL world events, and so on. That also gets included in the notebook and, at some point, added to the relevant chapter.
Once my outlining is done and I feel comfortable to start  writing, I tend to just create a master document and start writing. Now, that’s not to say my whole outline is complete or that it’s something I must strictly adhere to. Additions and changes are made all the time, sometimes I’ll get stuck or realize a scene doesn’t work the way I envisioned it or the beta tells me something is missing. So, I go back to the notes and work on it. Then I go back to the fic and write, write, write.
Oh and I usually ask the beta to go over a chapter once I’ve finished writing it (or, if I’m stuck in a scene, I’ll ask her to look at it right away) and then I’ll go over the feedback, make changes, possibly discuss some of the things she mentioned, do some more editing and then I’ll go to the next chapter and write some more.
14.  How do you deal with self-doubts?15.  How do you deal with writer’s block?16.  How many drafts do you need until you’re satisfied with a project?17.  What writing habits or rituals do you have?
Hmm. I’m not sure? I do know that when I’m stuck I tend to make a fruit salad or get snacks out in the hopes of it resulting in the required brainpower to keep going.
18.  If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be, and what would you write about?19.  How do you keep yourself motivated?20.  How many WIPs and story ideas do you have?
The Favourites21.  Who is/are your favourite character(s) to write?22.  Who is/are your favourite pairing(s) to write?23.  Favourite author
I don’t think I really have a favorite author... I don’t like non-fiction, I always read fiction and often thrillers. Some of the books I always order and often reread are ones by Jilliane Hoffman and Ingrid Black.
As for fic, see my favorites/bookmarks on my profile on FFnet/AO3.
24.  Favourite genre to write and read25.  Favourite part of writing
Ooh, difficult to choose. I really love doing the research and plotting, but I think the best part of writing is ending up with the story you imagined before you even ‘put pen to to paper’. Also, managing to convey the emotions through the writing - like when a reader comments with how they also teared up, they had to stop reading a few times to catch their breath/get a grip on their emotions or were just overwhelmed by it all. That’s pretty neat.
26.  Favourite writing program27.  Favourite line/scene28.  Favourite side character29.  Favourite villain30.  Favourite idea you haven’t started on yet
I have quite a few fic ideas I haven’t started writing yet. Not sure I can choose one. But one that I’ve had for a long time, like ~6 years, and even started writing on (but then discarded that because it wasn’t a good opening) is for Woman In Blue. It’s a first-person fic, a style I actually kinda hate and would probably back-button right away if I saw one of my favorite authors use in a new fic... anyway, it’s Mark Carter in first person, writing about Sam (and to a smaller extent, Jack) and all the things he learned about her life after her death - she and Jack died in a blaze of glory, defending Earth against a Replicator attack that also prompted Disclosure.
The Dark31.  Least favourite part of writing32.  Most difficult character to write33.  Have you ever killed a main character?34.  What was the hardest scene you ever had to write?
There are so many scenes I’ve struggled with, most recently in Unmade Plans (chapter 8 specifically, that one really was a fight and I’ve rewritten it probably a dozen times) but the hardest was probably the Sam/Klorel scene in Only the Stubborn Survive. Those of you who’ve read the fic will know which scene I mean.
35.  What scene/story are you least looking forward to writing?
The Fun36.  Last sentence you wrote37.  First sentence or your current WIP38.  Weirdest story idea you’ve ever had
I’m not quite sure. A lot of them start out as weird ideas! The end result as you see them are soooo different. Maybe Consequences of Being Touched, because there were quite a few risque scenes in there?
39.  Weirdest character concept you’ve ever had40.  Share some backstory for one of your characters
The Rest of It41.  Any advice for new/beginning/young writers?42.  How do you feel about love triangles?43.  What do you do if/when characters don’t follow the outline?
It depends on the situation and the outline. I’ve thrown outlines out of the window at times because something else turned out to work much better once you actually reach that point in your story, but I’ve also rewritten a scene a dozen times before I got it exactly the way I wanted it in the outline.
44.  How much research do you do?45.  How much world building do you do?46.  Do you reread your own stories?47.  Best way to procrastinate48.  What’s the most self-insert character/scene you’ve ever written?49.  Which character would you most want to be friends with, if they were real?50.  [Other question—ask me anything]
Well, those were fun but also tricky! Guess I shouldn’t have skimmed the list before rb’ing, haha. No just kidding, I loved answering them. Thanks!
Okay, so this is extremely long, but my good friend @ravenmorganleigh tagged me in this a few days ago, and I would never refuse her. I’ll put most of it under a cut! This was very interesting to answer!
1. What was your first fic and could you stand to reread it today?
Ooof, that’s a big ask! My very first fic was a Harry/Snape (yes, I know, groan away!) and the fact that I haven’t re-read it in well over a decade is suggestive that I never will, lol. I couldn’t even remember what it was called, so I just looked it up. It’s called Things Change (not linking it, sorry!!) and it was posted on skyehawke.com after fanfiction.net banned me in September of 2004. Lol. It’s still there, along with all of my other Harry Potter fic (of which there is over 1.4 million words).
2. What’s your most recent fic and how far do you think you’ve come?
I just posted Out of the Woods yesterday, which is an intentionally light-hearted story. My last serious one is the one I wrote just before it, The Clouded Eye, and I would say that between these and my earliest stuff, there is a significant gap in quality, yes. :P
3. In your opinion, what’s your best fic?
That’s honestly impossible to say. It depends what you’re judging on. For intricacy of plot, clearly my novel, Against the Rest of the World. For sheer fixing for series 4, which is a herculean task to explain, fill in the gaps logically, and then actually make it palatable, I would give it to the fix-it that most clearly addresses the most issues with series 4 – the Holmes family history, Eurus’ existence in general, Sherlock’s memory problems, Mary’s wholly unbelievable and unsatisfactory death, the practical issues with the entire concept of John and Sherlock having a child at 221B, etc – and that fic is Hell Hath No Fury. It’s a bittersweet ending, and honestly the most realistic I can see after that disastrous series. For sheer levels of how much it explains and delves into, I’m very pleased with it. For depth and intricacy of emotion, my personal vote goes to The Wisteria Tree. For pure porn, it has to be Best of Three. For one of my overall personal favourites, Bridging the Ravine.
4. In your opinion and without looking at any numbers, what’s your most popular fic?
Far and away it’s Best of Three, which is rapidly closing in on 100,000 hits, probably the only work of mine that will ever achieve this milestone.
Putting the rest under a cut!
5. Is there any fic that makes you super happy to reread and remember you wrote that?
I’m equally proud of all of my stories, for different reasons.
6. Is there any fic that makes you super embarrassed to reread and remember you wrote that?
Nah. I’m frankly proud of the silly ones and as to the early stuff, everyone has to start somewhere!
7. What’s the fic you most want to continue (unfinished or no)?
I have no unfinished stories at the moment. I just finished one, so I’m officially between projects. That will probably last for all of 2-3 days and then I’ll start something new.
8. What’s the oldest (longest since last update) fic you most want to continue (unfinished or no)?
Not applicable; I always finish my stories.
9. Have you ever written for a fandom without watching/reading/playing the source material?
No, and no offense, but I find that entire concept ridiculous and rather disrespectful to the source material. Even when I disagree with the canon, I have legions of respect for it.
10. Have you ever written for a fandom without reading other fanfic for it?
Yes, I have exactly one Star Wars fic (though I think I took it down for some reason, years ago) and one Lord of the Rings fic, and I still have never read any fic for those fandoms other than my own.
11. Have you ever written a fic for a concept you know someone else has done before? How did it impact your writing process or feelings after posting?
Only once, at least knowingly: after writing three long series 4 fix-it fics (A Case For Domestic Propinquity, Hell Hath No Fury, and From the Bottom of the Well), I decided that I wanted to finally give in and write a well-known trope, and wrote a fake-couple-for-a-case fic (Bridging the Ravine), which is now up there as one of my favourite fics of my own collection. Happily, I have a personal policy that I don’t read other people’s stories while writing my own, as a deliberate attempt to keep myself free of influence. The downside is that I miss out on probably a lot of good fic. For this trope, I’d only ever read one or two stories that would fit that description and they were literal years ago, so I don’t remember any of their details and didn’t want to. I make a pretty strong effort to not just reproduce the same ideas that other people have already done, which is a tricky thing to do in a fandom that has a lot of similar ideas and desires for the final results (aka, Sherlock and John getting together). I really do try very hard, though! This particular story also contains way more original characters than any other I’ve ever written, many of whom have developed enough backstories to work as stand-alone characters in their own stories and I’m proud of that, too! There are 24 in total!
12. Have you ever written a fic and decided never to publish it? Why?
No. There are story ideas I’ve refused to let myself write, though. Or several that I’ve sat on for months in trying to refuse to write, like my first Freebatch fic. I have mixed feelings about Real Person Fic and tried very hard to suppress the urge to write The A.G.R.A. Complex, and managed to keep myself from doing it for nine months. But then I caved. For the few I’ve refused to write, either it’s been because the concept itself made me sad, or it centred around an unpopular sexual kink, or some other reason like that. But generally, if I want to write something, I’ll just write it, and if I write it, I’ll post it.
13. What’s the biggest change between your style when you started in fandom and today?
I wouldn’t say that there’s been a huge change. I wrote more chaptered stories in the beginning, but I’m very busy and the stress of updating regularly is too much for me right now. I found my stride in the long novella. I strongly prefer the single-chapter format, but if it’s over 40,000 words, I’ll make myself break it up into chapters. The last WIP I posted as I wrote it was Against the Rest of the World, which I wrote over four months in the fall of 2013, leading up to the release of series 3 – in fact, I finished it two days before TEH aired! I was updating on average every six days, and some of those chapters were over 10,000 words long. It was a strain to keep it up, honestly – it meant that I was writing around the clock, day and night. It was the first thing I would do in the morning and the last thing I would do at night. I would come home on breaks at work to write, or take my laptop with me. I lived and breathed that story for four months. It’s told in first person voice (Sherlock’s POV), too, so it meant that I had Sherlock’s voice in my head at all times for four months. I missed him when it was over.
14. What’s the biggest change in your taste between when you started in fandom and today?
I wouldn’t say that there’s been one. I’m always trying to go further and further into the characters, their feelings, their experiences, and relate them so that the reader can ideally not just watch the story unfolding, but feel everything that the POV character is feeling at the same time. One can always go deeper, and I will never stop trying. Obviously different stories call for a heavier or lighter touch that way, but you get the drift.
15. Have you ever purposefully written one fandom/fic idea over another because you knew it’d be more popular?
No. I write the stories that come to me. I never write aiming for popularity. Though of course, I paradoxically always hope that my stories will be! But I never think, “Hmm, what would the fandom market really go for?” I just write the stories that I feel I need to tell.
16. Have you ever stopped writing a fic/for a fandom because it wasn’t receiving enough attention?
Never. I think that’s lame.
17. In your opinion, what’s your most overrated fic?
My most popular, Best of Three! Similar to Bridging the Ravine, I wrote this one after I’d written my initial big trio of series 3 fix-it fics (Deductions of a Lesser Mind, Act IV, and Vena Cava), and just needed to take a break and write something lighter. I wrote the entire thing in under 24 hours. I get why it’s popular – the combination of humour, sheer smut, nod to The Three Garridebs, and then the twist of romance at the end is a fairly unbeatable combination, but at the time I was indignant by its popularity, honestly! I’ve written many, many better, less popular stories. What can you do? Over time, I’ve stopped being exasperated and just rejoiced in Best of Three’s popularity.
18. What’s your most underrated fic?
Ha! That’s so subjective! I really can’t answer that. Instead, I’ll just list some stories of mine that I’ve been very proud of and sometimes wish people would read more: Hell Hath No Fury (again, very proud of this one for its sheer amount of fixing), A Satellite Out of Orbit (this is a companion story to Where My Demons Hide that features Sherlock’s visits to Ella, set just before and during TLD, but also extending to after the point where the original story stops – not compliant with TFP, as both stories were written before it aired, but I’m still proud of them both!), Munich (probably less read because it’s an established relationship, which tends to be less popular), The Legacy of Martha J. Hudson (this one is SUPER sad and I’m not surprised that people have shied away from it, but I still think it’s worth the read! Good for when you need a cry? Because, as the title heavily implies, Mrs Hudson dies in it), Pater Noster (a rather dark fix-it, wherein Mary’s first job was to kill John’s father – I was looking for a reason that Mary thought that John really wouldn’t love her anymore that was that much worse than her trying to kill Sherlock!), The Final Proof (this is even sadder than the Mrs Hudson story – it’s a retirement fic wherein Sherlock dies, then John dies at the end, too. Everyone who has read it has cried (seriously, like 98%) but also said that they found it really beautiful, so - ?).
19. If you had to pick one fic/scene/chapter of your work to describe your entire portfolio to a stranger, which would you pick?
Well, that’s easy! (Note: it’s not!) Possibly Vena Cava.
20. Have/Would you ever rewrite a fic? If yes, would you take the original down?
No, I wouldn’t rewrite a fic. What’s done is done. Although there are always the typos I missed the first time around. :P
21. If someone starts kudosing and commenting your fics in a spree and has a few works of their own, would you go look through theirs?
Only if I weren’t working on something of my own at the time, which almost never happens. What I really don’t like is when someone reads something of mine and then obligates me to then read something of theirs in turn. It makes me uncomfortable and I find it a bit rude. When I discover that a regular commenter also writes, then I will often make an effort to seek out their work when I’m between stories, but I hate having it pushed on me.
22. Has there ever been anyone who’s made you freak out because they read your work and followed/favorited/reviewed?
Yes, but not in this fandom.
23. What’s the nicest review you’ve ever gotten?
Impossible to say. I’ve been graced with some of the best, most thoughtful readers/commenters in the universe!!
24. What’s the meanest review you’ve ever gotten? Do you think the reviewer intended it?
I don’t like to focus on these, but I’ve received numerous death threats for my portrayals of Mary, especially back in 2014 (the year series 3 aired) when even Johnlockers still liked her. That only changed within the past year or two! Disliking Mary was an extremely unpopular stance at first. I received a number of these as comments on stories, particularly after I disabled anonymous asks here on tumblr. For a long time, one specific Mary stan kept on reading my stuff and leaving me hate. I really wondered why they kept reading my stuff when it obviously was never going to be what they wanted to see. Note to haters out there: that’s a piss poor persuasion technique. As to my writing itself, no, not really. When I started writing fanfic in 2004, in the world of Harry Potter, one of the worst things a reviewer could call a fic was “fluffy”. The meaning of this term has changed significantly in the past 14 years, but what it meant then was that it was a story seriously lacking in real substance, OOC as hell, and badly written. While these days it tends to me “romantic, light-hearted, heart-warming, sweet”, etc, it still makes me wince any time someone calls a story of mine “fluffy” for that reason.
25. What constructive criticism, however well-meaning, always makes you feel bad when you see it in a review?
I wouldn’t say that there’s one aspect that gets commented on in a regular way. Though @totallysilvergirl beta-read my novel and pointed out a specific thing I do in terms of sentence structure, but it never made me feel badly to have it pointed out.
26. What aspect of your writing do you most enjoy to see praised?
I’m always glad to hear when someone liked the main POV, and I tend to get that compliment the most when it’s a Sherlock POV. I’m also always pleased when people comment on how much a story made them feel – that’s really what I’m going for! Also, in Against the Rest of the World, I spent hours and hours on background research – locations in particular, but also things like local architecture, shipping routes and times, flight times, time zones, language, etc, so I’m always pleased when someone comments on that level of detail in that story.
27. If you could only ever write crossovers or single-fandom fics ever again, which would you pick?
Single fandom, all the way. I’m not a fan of crossovers or AU’s. I’ve written exactly two crossovers in my time. One was a Harry/Draco story in which Draco nominates Harry for the old TLC show What Not To Wear, to Harry’s fury. I had fun with that. The other, and this is pure crack now, was one of my earliest stories, a Darth Vader/Voldemort crossover. Though it isn’t actually a crossover, as DV was Harry in Polyjuice. It was very silly.
28. if you could only ever write for a single crossover or a single fandom again, which would you pick?
Single fandom, again.
29. Does the division of your writing across fandoms line up with your reading? What’s the biggest discrepancy?
Not applicable here; I only write for one fandom at a time. JKR turned me off Harry Potter with the ridiculous epilogue on book 7 and then her attempts to include more “canon” information in her interviews. It annoyed me hugely – but mostly it was the epilogue, which was (deliberately, most of us thought at the time) extremely difficult to write around, though I tried it for a few stories. When I finished that (my last HP story was posted in 2010, but it had been a year since the one prior), I thought I was finished with writing and with fandoms in general. Then I discovered Benedict Cumberbatch in May of 2013, and through him, Sherlock. By the time I was on ASIB, I knew with a sinking feeling that I was simply going to have to write this fandom, too. Lol. I posted the first chapter of my first fic on June 15th, 2013.
30. Do you continue to write for a fandom after you’ve moved on or do you focus solely on the new one?
History would show that I focus strictly on the new one. The only exceptions to strictly Sherlock have been my four Freebatch stories (The A.G.R.A. Complex, Having Your Cake, Always Through the Changing, and A Room with a View).
31. Who’s the one character you’ve just never managed to get perfectly right?
No one, I hope. I’ve written a large number of the characters in the Sherlock universe, including (in approximate order of frequency): Sherlock, John, Mycroft, Lestrade, Mary, Molly, Janine, Ella, Mrs Hudson, and Sally Donovan. Sherlock and John are my favourites to write, Mary and Molly my least favourites.
32. Who’s the one character who shines without you even trying?
Sherlock, absolutely. He’s where my heart lives. That said, some of my favourite stories of my own are John POV’s.
33. Is there any particular character whose scenes always wind up being longer/more frequent than you expected? Does the quality hold up?
No.
34. Was there any fic that you wrote that really surprised you in the fandom reaction? Was it just by the numbers or did they take it an entirely different way?
The first time I wrote a Mary POV (Moving on/Making do), I was honestly afraid that I’d made her too relatable, too likeable, but the people who read the story still disliked her. Ha! And again, the sheer popularity of Best of Three always surprised me.
35. Have you ever written a ship into a fic without meaning to?
Yes, I never meant to ship Harry/Draco, but it just happened.
36. Have you ever sincerely written a ship you do not support into a fic?
Yes, for the necessity of canon compliancy, I’ve written John/Mary, which I loathe.
37. Have you ever purposefully bashed a character/ship in a fic?
No. I do my very best to portray the characters as I see them in canon. There are definitely people who would said that I have bashed Mary in my stories, and I respectfully and thoroughly disagree. Mary is canonically: an assassin who killed for the highest bidder, meaning that she killed without principle, for nothing other than money. Personal gain. Gross. She’s also someone who cut and run, leaving at least half of her team alive to be killed or tortured without even checking to see if there was any possibility of rescuing them. She displayed the same urge to run away and leave John behind later, too. I find this distasteful and cowardly in the extreme. On top of this, she canonically gaslights and belittles John, which is emotionally abusive behaviour, yet “playfully” insults both him and Sherlock on an ongoing basis (“I’m not John; I can tell when people are lying” – two insults with one comment!). She displays incredible entitlement after she attempts to murder John’s best friend and doesn’t seem to think that she should need to apologise for what she did, nor that John had the right to be incredibly angry with her over it. She also showed zero signs of remorse for any of her behaviour, past or present – lying to John, anything and everything she did in her deeply criminal past, etc. When people comment and say, “I loved your evil Mary!”, my typical response is “do you mean canon!Mary?” because that’s all I’ve ever tried to write. The ONE exception I will make here is my story Scars, which is a deliberate attempt to extrapolate from Mary’s canonical gaslighting and show where that behaviour typically leads. I did my homework and consulted two therapists who work specifically with men who have been abused by women for this story, and both confirmed that they saw Mary’s behaviour as gaslighting and abusive, too. I wrote this story partly to combat the then-popular notion that Mary and John displayed “playful banter” or “bickering” at the beginning of HLV, when I saw it as clearly one-sided and not at all playful. I still don’t consider this “bashing”, however.
38. Have you ever purposefully written something you know your readers would find uncomfortable/would not enjoy? If yes, why?
Yes, the above story. Why? Because it was a story I felt had to be told. Also: The Final Proof (the one where Sherlock dies of old age), which I knew would make people cry. Again: I write what the muses prompt me to write!
39. Do you consider yourself to have a readership?
Yes, I’m very lucky to have a huge readership and it’s wonderful! (Thank you!!!!!) I don’t have any specifics on the numbers in this fandom, but when I was writing HP fic, someone wrote her doctoral dissertation on HP fanfic and she collected stats from the various archives that were active at the time, then contacted the twenty most read authors in the fandom. To my shock at the time, I was apparently the eighth most read author in the slash fandom (male/male fic), though I was far from being the eighth most popular!! She estimated my readership at close to 200,000 readers. This was HP, though, the biggest fandom in history. I don’t imagine that my readership is anywhere near that here in Sherlock-land.
40. Do you feel like you put out enough content?
Um, yes. I’m now close to 1.9 million words over 78 stories. I write constantly, when I have the time to do so. Occasionally a commenter will say something like, “write more, please!” and while I know it’s meant as encouragement, it can also feel slightly exasperating. I honestly don’t see how I could humanly be producing MORE. But I try. :P
41. If you cross-post your fics on multiple sites, do you have a favorite? Are there certain fics you would only post on certain site?
I only use ao3 these days.
42. How many views has your most popular fic gotten?
As I said, Best of Three is closing in on 100,000 hits now.
43. Your least popular?
My least-read story would have to be my most recently posted, which I wouldn’t consider my least popular by a long shot. That’s honestly difficult to identify because of course one has to consider the length of time a story has been posted. It’s not fair to consider a story posted yesterday against a story that’s been up for four years. But the newest story has about 2,000 hits at the moment.
44. Do you follow/favorite/kudos/comment/review more stories than you have received?
Thanks to my readership, I don’t think that would be possible.
45. If you had to call yourself an author of a single genre (besides fanfic) what label would you give yourself?
I really only have one major work that isn’t fanfic, which is the original novel that I’m still working on getting published (and by “still working on”, I mean that I haven’t had time to work on this since July or so, whoopsie). Its technical genre definition is spy thriller, so let’s go with that! It’s loosely based on Against the Rest of the World with a dash of Vena Cava, a spy thriller with a gay romantic subplot.
46. Do you consider yourself a diverse author?
Yes. While my stories typically come to a similar result, I think they all get there in noticeably different ways! I’ve written amnesia, hurt/comfort, disability, many different character POV’s, gentle romances, heavy angst, deathfic, retirement fic, thrillers, fix-its, addiction (more in HP), magic (HP again), long novels, short sketches, character sketches, silly stuff, dark stuff. If you look at my stories chronologically, you will see a pattern of dark-light-dark-light – if I’ve just written a heap of angst, I’ll typically switch it up and write something lighter, or a different character voice, or a completely new idea (such as the Mary/Molly pairing in The Clouded Eye), etc. I do try to keep it fresh!
47. If someone you know in real life who isn’t involved in fandoms asked to read your work, would you let them? If yes, what would you recommend they read first?
Only if they were already familiar with the canon and open to reading graphic male/male sex, and that limits most of the population that isn’t already in the fandom.
48. Does anyone you know from outside of fandom know you write fanfic? Are they involved in the same fandom too?
A few people know. I’m very careful about who I tell.
49. Has anyone in your life ever read your fanfic just because you wrote it?
My mother. :) She reads all of my stories. We have a very good relationship!
50. Has writing fanfic had a significant impact on your life? Would you say it’s entirely positive?
Yes, it’s had a huge impact on my life. It’s been my secret other life since 2004, with a 3-4 year hiatus in there. Sometimes the drama gets to be a bit much, but the creative outlet of writing and the joy of sharing the love for these characters with a whole universe of other people is just unbeatable.
01: When did you first start writing?
Around mid-2012 and by accident. Had a super crazy dream that I wrote down in the morning after, and after that it became a fic.
02: What was your favorite book growing up?
Don't really think I had one. I can only name Redações Perigosas II.
03: Are you an avid reader?
Yeah. Not so much for the past years because I also write quite a bunch and can't do both.
04: Have you ever thrown a book across the room?
No. Why would I damage my stuff?
Nah.
06: Have you read any writing-advice books?
Not books, but I'm always reading articles and stuff.
07: Have you ever been part of a critique group?
Not really? I do critique everything I read.
08: What’s the best piece of feedback you’ve ever gotten?
Can't think of any.
09: What’s the worst piece of feedback you’ve ever gotten?
Rewrite something from the scratch after a rough draft. Are you fucking kidding me?
Does anyone write anything by hand these days?
20: What’s your favorite writing program?
Can we not? Only one IRL has possibly read any of my works.
33: Are you interested in having your work published?
I guess so? It's just complicated when you don't write in your own language.
34: Describe your writing space.
A computer, a chair, music on, and a bottle of water.
35: What’s your favorite time of day for writing?
When the sun is out. I tend to write a LOT of gibberish at night. It's like my brain stops working.
36: Do you listen to music when you write?
Always. Silence is too disturbing.
37: What’s your oldest WIP?
A Flones sequel to ItWS. It's like from the end of 2013? (And here I thought it was the Private Eye Pudd.)
38: What’s your current WIP?
(How nice would be to have ONE WIP.) There's the dating show, the alien, the witness protection, the dequel to DF, and the adaptation ones. All Ziam.
39: What’s the weirdest story idea you’ve ever had?
Probably the one with Zayn clones.
40: Which is your favorite original character, and why?
Probably Aunt Geo or Nan Fletcher. I love to have cheeky old ladies with big hearts around!
41: What do you do when characters don’t follow the outline?
Follow them instead.
42: Do you enjoy making your characters suffer?
Never. Probably why I don't really write angst or anything heavier.
43: Have you ever killed a main character?
*sweats profusely* A few times.
44: What’s the weirdest character concept you’ve ever come up with?
Probably the fanged bird from TA or any of the enemies from DF.
45: What’s your favorite character name?
In general? Not sure I get this one.
46: Describe your perfect writing space.
A computer, nice temperature, snacks and juice, soft music playing.
47: If you could steal one character from another author and make then yours, who would it be and why?
Derek Hale. Because JD honestly didn't deserve him. A great character always tortured and sub-utilised.
48: If you could write the next book of any series, which one would it be, and what would you make the book about?
Bridget Jones, I guess? And I'd need something less straight. Make it gayer.
49: If you could write a collaboration with another author, who would it be and what would you write about?
I don't think I'd be up for that?
50: If you could live in any fictional world, which would it be?
The Pokémon world, maybe?
I wanna know 6 & 8 for “Fanfic author ask” 😁
Thanks @lilyofchoices ily❤
6. Is there any fic that makes you super embarrassed to reread and remember you wrote that?
Its still up and floating around but back in 2014? 2015 maybe i wrote a maze runner fan fic about Thomas having a sister and she's dating Alby and they break up so she can date Minho ??? I think is his name (its super obvious i havent touched that fic in years)
8. What’s the oldest (longest since last update) fic you most want to continue (unfinished or no)?
The first technically oldest fic i have is a PJO fic that was actually 1st published in 2011 and i put out like 5 full parts (and when i say full parts i mean each part was 40-60 pages each) until 2013 when some unfortunate events happened to me so i deleted all of it and havent published it since. though over the years i always worked on it and build on it its never been republished or re uploaded
side bonus answer: if youre wanting something more recent honestly my college or famous open heart au that i wish i didn't give up on and have broken edits and chunks laying around somewhere
