Irina Cisternino, a PhD candidate of Stony Brooke University, is writing their research on topics related to technology, art and fandom. Today’s the men’s cycling race of Paris-Roubaix, the “Hell of the North”. This seems a good time to remind folks that I’ve written a Johnlock cycling fic, Slipstream, in which the boys even ride some of the (in)famous cobbled passages that are a staple of the Spring Classics such as Paris-Roubaix, such as the Trouée d’Arenberg.

Yesterday, I did what would have made my ten or eleven year old self very happy (made me happy, too, in fact): I travelled to the Black Forest Mountains and visited the famous Grube Clara, a still active flourite and baryte mine. Or rather, I visited the spoil tip, where for a small fee one can search for minerals. Clara Mine is a world-famous spot with more than 400 minerals occurring there, many of them very rare.

I returned with about 15 kilos of rock (which was fun on the trains ...), which I’ll study under the stereo microscope now. But I’m confident that I found some cool shit, such as these olivenite crystals large enough to be visible to the naked eye.

How did you get interested in Sherlock Holmes?

I was already familiar with the characters through various film and TV adaptations when I read the ACD-stories in the mid-1990s. When BBC Sherlock aired, I was cautious and doubtful at first, but already the first episode captivated me, and the fascination hasn’t abated by now, more than a decade later.

How are you involved with the anthology?

Who is your favorite character from the Arthur Conan Doyle canon?  

Sherlock Holmes – his attention to minute detail, and the way he always kicks up, not down, and helps people who don’t find help elsewhere.

What's a favorite tip or trick of yours for writing or art?

Having several projects going at the same time. I never suffer from writer’s or art-block. I do suffer from chronic lack of time, but that keeps the creative juices flowing.

Who do you think would have blushed the most reading a romantic story about them: Holmes or Watson?

Watson walked into 221b after his shift. It was quiet—Holmes was out or at the microscope. After climbing the steps he saw dark hair on the arm of the sofa. ‘Pondering a case’ thought Watson. Further into the apartment, he realized that Holmes's hands weren't right. Rather, a book was on his chest and he was asleep. He didn't recognize the book. The title surprised Watson. He thought Holmes really wouldn’t want him to see this.

What's a favorite tip or trick of yours for writing or art? Leave it overnight and look at it with fresh eyes the next day.
