Chapter 5: Same, but Different

Summary: Holmes investigates his mirror-life and meets his brother, a very suspicious man.

“What has happened to you, Sherlock?”

He raises his own cup and sips. At least tea hasn’t changed. “What ever do you mean?”

“You’re different. In what exact sense, I cannot tell. But you are changed.”

He trusts his brother more than most people, John excepted. If he ever returns to 1891, he will most likely tell his brother about his trip to 2017. But he is not sure about this Mycroft. He is different, and Sherlock isn’t able to predict his reactions so easily.

“I am worried about my partner, who has been shot.” This comes out more aggrieved than he’d intended. “What do you expect of me? My heart is not stone, brother.”

I have just passed a milestone: 2 million words written in this fandom! It was six years ago this month that I received my invitation to join AO3. ❤️

Chapter 3: Partners

Holmes and Watson/ 2017 (BBC-verse):

While Watson receives medical attention, Holmes has an interesting conversation with a Lestrade lookalike, minus side-whiskers.

He hates the word somehow. It means he has no idea how this happened, and if something has already happened (as this clearly has), Sherlock Holmes ought to at least have a theory to explain it. How can he even gather evidence? They were in an alley, someone was shooting at them, Watson was hit, and now they’re in the year 2017. 

But it can’t be that they’ve travelled through time. That happens in the sort of books Watson reads, but those are just fantasies. The world has three dimensions. A person might travel on a train, on a ship, in an automobile, or even in a special ship that flies to the moon. That’s science. One might go north, south, east, west, up, or down—but not forwards or backwards in time. 

And how can there be another Sherlock Holmes living at 221B Baker Street?

Chapter 2: Mr Smith and Dr Jones

Sherlock and John (BBC) / 1891 (ACD-verse) : Finding themselves in some version of Victorian London, with Sherlock wounded, John does his best to figure things out.

Opening an unattended newspaper he finds on a bench tells him that the date is 26 January, 1891, but this isn’t the information that makes him stop in his tracks, forcing other pedestrians to mutter insults and go around him. 

The front page displays two sketched portraits. The headline reads: "Holmes and Watson At Large. Police Seek Help from Public."
