Kevin Cage of @spotlightsaga reviews... Santa Clarita Diet (S01E07) Strange or Just Inconsiderate? Santa Clarita Diet (S01E08) How Much Vomit? Airdate: February 3, 2017 @netflix Ratings: N/A Streaming Only Score: (S01E07) 8/10 (S01E08) 8/10 ******STRANGE OR JUST INCONSIDERATE?****** As usual there's just too many things going on in 'Santa Clarita Diet' to skip a review, or at least a quick reaction or recap. Slowing myself down by taking breaks in between episodes is literally infuriating. There are few shows out there that make just want to binge to the very end, but SCD is totally one of them. Let's make this quick tho, cuz dammit, this show is more effective than Prozac. Every episode brings a major breakthrough and that's not an easy job. Besides framing Dan and attempting to eat his body in one night, the real exciting moment here is the arrival of Deputy Anne Garcia, played by Natalie Morales - that's right; The Grinder, Parks & Rec, Girls, Trophy Wfe... Her deadpan delivery is a perfect addition to the hodgepodge of comedic styles that make up this kick-ass Horror-Comedy. Natalie delivers her lines in a way where you never really know where she's coming from, so putting her as the lead on Dan's missing person case is fn' perfect. She seems shocked (as would anyone) that The Hammond's liked Dan, because she is very well aware he is (was) an intolerable douchebag. She seems more interested in Lisa, and Lisa seems more interested in Anne's 'perfect fingers' to truly worry about Dan's actual whereabouts... So I think the set-up Eric assisted with leading the troopers to Dan's 'Im a Crooked Cop' box should do the trick. This is a huge win/win for Eric, who was worried about the smoke bomb he had planted in the garden that really just added more humor to Dan's unexpected death... Cuz who can be pissed off if they're already dead? Not Dan... Cuz he's dead, not undead. Loki still remains the wildcard tho, I'm thinking he's definitely going to be popping up very soon and with the way that this whole 'virus' of sorts has effected Sheila and put a pep in her step (sans the missing toe), I can't wait to see Loki in a similar disposition. Its 'Santa Clarita Diet' so I'm going to go ahead and expect pure fn' chaos! Queue up another one! **********HOW MUCH VOMIT?********** I literally had to rack my brain for half the episode... Who the fuck is The Edge?! The WWE fan in me automatically associates it w/the wrestler. The ex-raver in me associates it the famous Raver-Centric South Florida Nightclub (PLUR MAN ✌🏻)... But suddenly that iconic video from the early 90's, (fuck, the 90s were so rad) 'Numb' popped into my head... 'The Edge' is the guitarist dude in U2 who always wore the beanie, and he was in the chair the whole video while they tied him up and did random shit to him. Of course I'm loving 'Santa Clarita Diet' but they hit me with that pop culture reference and I immediately went back to 1993 and now I can't get back. This is completely off topic, but if I had a time machine and I had to pick a year to go back to and live, but as my age now... No doubt just rewind me to 1993. And U2 may be the worlds most hated band after that iPhone debacle, but back in 1993, they released 'Zooropa' and that has to be one of the greatest albums of all time. I'm still stuck over here, but wasn't it so fucking cool that in the 90s that Top 40 meant an array of genres from Indie to R&B to Hip Hop to Rock to Lo-Fi and every goddamn sub-genre in between...and not whatever it means now. Damn you, 'Santa Clarita Diet', Loki is killing everyone with his music and then attempting to kill Joel, Abby is attempting to bring home a dead man to her parents doorstep like a proud kitty cat and all I can think about is a 90's reference that lasted all of 30 seconds... You can't make early 90s or late 80s references or my mind completely goes off the rails. And for the record, Abby, if your mom wants to embrace a look and kill another zombie while looking like the guitarist/occasional vocalist from U2... Never say lose the beanie... Maybe even say keep the beanie and approach that kill with the spunk of Rayanne Graff and the thoughtfulness & reflection of Angela Chase... And YES, that's a 'My So-Called Life' reference!!! Who says we can't have 90s teen angst references with our Comedy-Horror too?! I admittedly snapped back at the end of the episode when Loki broke down their door and tried to kill Joel/exposed Sheila's whole toe issue that she'd been hiding out of obvious embarrassment. They barricaded themselves in their room and Joel gave an excellent '20 seconds or less' speech that assured Sheila that no matter what problem they faced they'd do it together. Joel has proved that double time already being there for Sheila every step of the way through this ordeal, but somehow hearing him say it out loud as Loki attempted to breakdown their barricaded bedroom door made it mean soooo much more... It was the most tender and honestly romantic moment of 'SCD' yet. Comedy-Horror is a hard enough genre to nail, but to pepper it with Romance & Flesh Eating Serbian Zombies, that's the mother ducking trifecta! 'Warm Bodies' couldn't do it, 'Zombie Honeymoon' couldn't do it, 'Life After Beth' almost did it, but 'Santa Clarita Diet' is over here doing it, y'all... And they're doing it well.

How I Lost 40 Pounds in 4 Months
The Steps I Took to Lose 40 Pounds in 4 Months
I’m here to tell you that as someone who’s struggled with their weight since childhood, losing 40 pounds in 4 months is hard, and there were many times that my dedication faltered, but the satisfaction gained after stepping on the scale and seeing those pounds disappear, made the pain I endured worth it. In middle school, at my heaviest, I weighed over 300 miserable pounds, then during high school I buckled down and managed to lose over 100 pounds! By my first year of college, I was thinner than ever and I finally felt comfortable in my own skin. While I had every intention to keep going, during the second year of college my life hit a rough patch and old eating habits slowly crept back in. Soon, all the control I’d built through the years vanished; I ate more than ever, abandoned my workout routine, and avoided scales and non-stretchy clothes at all cost. I managed to dodge the reality of my weight gain for a few years until at 23, while getting a check-up, I came face to face with just how far I’d let my weight go. In bright red text, the numbers 255 stared back at me. Instantly I felt the blood rushed to my cheeks and I had to fight the urge to cry the rest of the appointment. How could I have let myself get back here? After the shock settled down I drove home and thought for a while about how my mindset need to change so that I could lose the weight for good. No longer would I allow excuses to rule my life: I had to take back the control. It has been 4 months since then and I’ve lost a staggering 40 pounds (update: 55!). I understand that weight loss can be overwhelming so I’ve decided to share the steps I took to lose 40 pounds in 4 months. If I can do this, anyone can! (Note: I am not a nutritionist or expert of any kind I am just sharing my experience)
1. Track Everything
Tracking meals = accountability! Once I decided to make the change, I knew had to come clean about what, and more importantly, how much I ate. Since my phone is glued to my side, I decided to download an app called MyFitnessPal where I can log what I eat, my exercise, water-intake and more instead of keeping a journal. Writing down your meals on paper works great too. The app also calculates your information such as weight, age and goals and tells you how many calories you should consume in a day as well as how carbs, fats, and proteins, etc. There are countless apps out there that you can use to track your meals. I chose MyFitnessPal because so many of the weight loss Instagramer’s that I follow, swear by it. I figured if it worked for them it could work for me. I love how easy the app is to use and how large of a food and restaurant database they have also they can sync up to other apps and devices you may use (Note: I’m not being paid to say this, I just love this app). Get in the habit of writing or entering everything you eat, and I do mean everything. Those extra little “bites” or “tastes” seriously add up and could sabotage your weight loss! If you go over on your calories, log that too! Part of weight loss is becoming accountable for our actions. Ps. It’s okay to eat more on occasion! I personally practice the 80/20 method. 80% of the time I stick to my goals while 20% of the time I treat myself.
2. Ditch the Excuses! Change your Mindset
We all have them, I was full of them: I’m tired, it’s too late, I don’t have the time, it’s just one slice, etc.…. Excuses are just lies we tell ourselves, if you want to lose the weight then you must make it a priority. It’s that simple. There are a million different weight loss methods on the market that overly complicate it, the truth is, it all boils down to calories in vs. calories out. I lost the weight by sticking to my daily calorie goal and working out about 4-5 days per week. There were days, weeks even, when my motivation would dip and my mind would flood with excuses, but if I had listened, I would have never lost 40 pounds. Your goals and dreams won’t be accomplished by making excuses. It’s hard, I know, but trust me when I say it is so worth it. Bye-bye excuses, hello cute new outfits!
3. Get moving
As I mentioned earlier, I work out about 4-5 days per week for anywhere from 30-90 minutes at a time. I am no athlete, during gym I was the kid who’d rather talk than kick a ball. Yet I knew to lose the weight I’d have to start. Working out doesn’t have to be terrible and the more you exercise the more you’ll love it. Starting out, I couldn’t run for longer than a minute and honestly that was pushing it! Now I can run for an hour + without trouble and enjoy every second, when before I loathed the mere thought of it. Find an activity whether it be lifting, cardio, workout videos, swimming, etc. and move your body. Exercise not only aids weight loss, but it can boost your mood and extend your life. Sounds like a no brainer, right? Also, don’t underestimate the power of walking. Seriously. Some of my best weeks in regards to pounds lost were weeks I mostly walked.
4. Drink More Water
t first I was skeptical, can drinking more water really help with weight loss? Well, I decided to give it a try and quickly found out why everyone and their mom suggests it. Not only did I have more energy, I was losing weight like crazy. Diet coke was my go-to drink before, I would go days without water and then wonder why I felt like crap. Now I’ve made a habit of carrying a water bottle wherever I go. There is Research that shows regardless of diet or exercise, women who increased their water intake saw significant weight loss over time. Another study asserted that hydration and obesity are linked and that overweight people were more likely to have poor hydration. Crazy, right? So just how much H20 do you need? According to the Mayo clinic, women should drink about 9 cups or 2.2 liters of water per day, men 13 cups or 3 liters (1). Get to drinking!
5. Reward Yourself
Yes, you heard me right: Treat Yo Self! Now I’m not saying to tear open a bag of Oreos and go to town—though that may be tempting, but If you finally broke through that plateau and started seeing results or you beat your last running time, then go see that movie you’ve been dying to see. Plan a shopping day with friends and snag that shirt you’d been eyeing for a while. Feel proud about your accomplishments, remember I didn’t lose 40 pounds I lost 1 pound 40 times! So, you only lost one pound that week when you’d hoped to lose 3? Keep pushing, keep grinding because those pounds, hell even those ounces, add up and before you know it you’ll be down 40 pounds too!

Pauly Shore: Eyewitness to Comedy History
Brash, nasal and opinionated, Mitzi Shore took a middling comedy club on the Sunset Strip and for a time made it the center of American comedy. That was the Comedy Store, which she won ownership of in her 1974 divorce. Before she died in 2018, the Comedy Store launched the careers of a bevy of stand-up comics, including David Letterman, Jay Leno, Jimmie Walker, Elayne Boosler and Sandra Bernhard.
Watching them all was her son, Pauly Shore. He gained notoriety as “the Weasel,” a lewd surfer character, and became a popular V.J. on MTV before appearing in 1990s movies like “Encino Man” and “Bio-Dome.” Today, at 51, he’s still a working stand-up and has begun performing a one-man show about his childhood called “Stick With the Dancing.” Backstage after a recent performance in Myrtle Beach, S.C., he shifted out of his Weasel persona and remembered his childhood as an eyewitness to the greatest minds in comedy. Looking back on that scene of the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s, he spoke about his mother’s influence — and the breakthroughs and feuds that surrounded her. Here are excerpts:
Mitzi Shore as a Force of Nature
My mom was very loving — but her first love was always the Store and the comics. She owned a limo — a weird-looking limo. Riding in it, I felt like we were the Addams Family. But Mom loved being driven around. She always had comedians drive the limo.
Hiding in the Lighting Booth
Around age 8, Pauly Shore became fascinated with stand-up and spent as much time as he could at the Store, hiding in the lighting booth to watch stars like Redd Foxx and George Carlin and little-known talents like Lenny Schultz.
Lenny Schultz was a P.E. coach with a beautiful body, but he was nuts. He would bring food onstage and say, “The Lenny Schultz diet, what I like to do is put food on the parts of my body where I want to lose weight.”
Then he would strip down to a Speedo and stick handfuls of cottage cheese inside the Speedo. He’d pour milk on his head, rub a grapefruit on his elbow, and smear chocolate pudding on his chest. My little jaw dropped. After a performance, he’d go out to the parking lot to clean up. My first job at the Comedy Store was hosing down Lenny Schultz.
House Calls From Robin Williams
None of the club’s regulars hit it bigger than Williams, who parlayed his sets there into television and film stardom.
Robin Williams was a really sweet guy, but he would run around the club like the Tasmanian Devil. For a while, my mom’s office was at our house. Right after Robin got the “Mork & Mindy” TV show, he’d show up at our house to meet with my mom, wearing the Mork outfit.
Comedians are very sensitive. My mom knew that, and she was like the den mother to all of them. She knew how fragile Robin was, and they had this kindness for each other that was pretty special.
The Gentle Richard Pryor
Pryor rebooted his career at the Comedy Store in the 1970s.
My mom was very close with Richard Pryor — she took him under her wing. I know they had sex one time, but their relationship wasn’t a sex thing, it was a love-intimacy-respect thing.
When Richard showed up at the Store, it was like a wave went through the club: “Richard’s here, oh my God, Richard’s here.” I’d go out to the parking lot and open the door of his car. He’d get out, say “Heeeeey little man!” and shake my hand. He wasn’t socially awkward, the way most comedians are offstage; he was gentle and soft.
Once he got inside the club, I’d fetch him a Courvoisier, he’d light a cigarette, and my mom would sit next to him on a staircase. When the M.C. would announce Richard, people reacted like Jesus Christ was coming onstage. He would get a laugh as soon as he spoke, no matter what he said.
Richard came around whenever he was developing a new standup set; Paul Mooney, who wrote with him, and Jennifer Pryor, his wife, would sit in the back and take notes. And Richard would be terrible at the beginning — the audience would worship him, but he’d do five minutes with no laughs. He’d keep working at it, and it’d get a little better, but still be pretty bad. Then I’d go away for a little while, maybe a month at summer camp, and when I came back he’d be doing 40 minutes and killing.
Mondays at the Club
That was “potluck” night, with performance times determined by drawing names from a hat. Some aspiring comics would spend months performing on Mondays, gaining experience and trying to get in Mitzi Shore’s good graces.
Garry Shandling did over 20 showcases for my mom before she gave him a prime-time slot. She believed in him — if she didn’t, she wouldn’t have let him hang around — but she pushed him really hard. He was a writer and she thought he didn’t have it as a performer yet.
Same thing with Roseanne — my mom told her to wear overalls. To this day, I think Roseanne got her cadences from my mom. Roseanne kind of worshiped her.
Hollywood had the casting couch and the Comedy Store had the Mitzi couch: if you wanted a spot onstage, you needed to kiss the owner’s ass. But when my mom liked you, she would make you a doorman. You could park cars. “You’re great. Now go answer the phones.” You’d be on the payroll, getting comfortable in this crazy environment.
Yakov Smirnoff worked as the handyman at the Store — and at our house. He needed a job, and he was a carpenter. He sanded our doors and built a butler’s pantry.
Late Nights Offstage
Sometimes after the Store closed for the evening, a handful of comics would go to Mitzi Shore’s home.
My mom had afterparties at our house, but I was a light sleeper. From the third grade through junior high, I would wake up in the middle of the night and everyone would be in the living room: Mom, Richard Belzer, Robin Williams, Richard Pryor, David Tyree, other randoms. She’d bring champagne from the Store and there’d be lots of joints.
I’d open the door to a smoke-filled room and say: “Mom. Mom. Mom!”
Then she’d notice me. “What? Oh, hey, Pauly.”
“Mom, I’ve got school in the morning, please.”
Everyone would just stare. They apologized, but the second I left the room, they would start laughing.
Comics on the Picket Line
After Johnny Carson moved “The Tonight Show” from New York to California in 1972, aspiring comics in Los Angeles had a clear career path that involved attracting the attention of Carson’s bookers (who frequented the Comedy Store). However, the comedians weren’t paid for their sets.
My mom saw her role as giving comics a space to develop, but it was obvious she was making a lot of money. The comics wanted to get paid, too. So in 1979, they went on strike.
Mom took it really personally. It was embarrassing to have all these comics out in front with picket signs. They had messages like “No Bucks for Yucks.”
It was hard. One comedian, Steve Lubetkin, killed himself, jumping off the roof of the Hyatt House, landing on the ramp between the Hyatt and the Store. “My name is Steve Lubetkin,” his suicide note read. “I used to work at the Comedy Store.”
The [striking comics] ended up making a deal and got paid a token amount. My mom never really forgave the comedians, but pretty soon the drugs were flowing and people were partying again and everybody seemed to forget about it.
Mitzi Shore expanded the club over the years, but Pauly Shore discovered that if he wanted a stand-up career of his own, he would need to leave.
When I got into high school, I wanted a 100-gallon saltwater fish tank. Mom said she wouldn’t buy it for me, but that I could work for it — she made me the short-order cook on weekends at the Westwood branch of the Comedy Store.
My mom used the Westwood branch for comedians she thought weren’t ready for the Sunset location: Howie Mandel, Paul Rodriguez, Arsenio Hall. Jim Carrey did these amazing impressions of Elvis Presley and Henry Fonda.
Budd Friedman owned the Improv, and there was a feud — comics had to play one club or the other. It was awkward, because me and Budd’s kid went to Beverly Hills High School together. I used to go into the Improv, write down the names of the comedians working there and tell my mom.
My mom also had this tense situation with Rodney Dangerfield. In 1985, he hosted HBO’s annual “Young Comedians Special” — and Rodney recruited them all from the Comedy Store.
My mom didn’t like that he was poaching her comics — but they wanted to be poached! Roseanne did the show, Andrew Dice Clay did it. Sam Kinison had been working as a doorman at the Store, but the spot he did on Rodney’s special made him famous.
Mom banned Sam from the Store because of an incident where he showed up all coked out with a gun, looking for somebody he had beef with. I was hanging out with Sam a lot and she thought I was going to die. We had this intense fight where she told me not to spend time with Sam. I said, “Mom, you don’t understand. I’m not hanging out with him for drugs — I’m hanging out with him because he’s a genius.”
She started crying and threw her keys at me. The next day, I got my own studio apartment and started my stand-up career without her.

I was hoping that someone with experience could tell me whether buying insurance through the Maryland offered program or through a direct insure such as united healthcare or blue cross blue shield would be the better deal. Dental Insurance Company Denying Authorization for Covered Plan Services.?
Anthem Blue Cross Dental Net I was referred to an oral surgeon by my primary care dentist since I have to have 6 teeth and 2 residual root tips extracted in advance of getting a full upper denture. All the extractions including the root tips have to be done during one visit, which necessitates the use of IV sedation. My general dentist cannot perform any of this work. Anthem Blue Cross Dental Net denied the original pre-authorization request, and subsequent appeal stating that my general dentist can perform the services being referred. Which is absolutely not the case. I even spoke with a customer service rep who indicated that the extraction of residual root tips is definitely a referable service and it clearly states that in their Dental Net Provider Contract. She has no explanation for why the appeal was denied. My primary care dentist has even provided Anthem Blue Cross Dental Net with his specific reasons for referring this work to an oral surgeon and I still can't get anyone at Anthem Blue Cross to re-evaluate the original denial and the appeal and authorize the necessary work. I have filed a complaint with the California Department of Insurance, although I don't hold out much hope for any results from that effort. HELP... what are my options? Who can I contact? Thanks""

Rubbermaid Weights, Goku, and a 7 year-4 year Degree
I have always loved fitness; well I have always loved lifting weights. Fitness involves much more than lifting weights like running. I’ll be honest, I can not stand running, it sucks. I have a “rep the weights faster” as a cardiovascular ideology. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not hating on runners or endurance athletes. I actually envy y'all (I’m from the south, I say y'all, don't expect it to change). With that being said, yes I do admire your capacity for long duration cardio endurance but I also believe a “Man” shouldn’t weigh less than 185 pounds or be beardless. Thats another blog later on.
As long as I remember I was into pumping iron. When I was a kid I idolized figures such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, The Rock, The Incredible Hulk, and Goku. Yes, I know the last two or cartoon characters, but a lot can be learned from Goku’s dedication and commitment to training and nutrition. If you didn't get hyped AF and start beating the shit out of your bedroom walls when Kakarot went Super Saiyan you aren’t even human. I’m a nerd, so what, I can bench press a Fiat. Anyways back to my childhood and lifting weights. To this day I can still remember my first weight set. ��It was this tiny little bench with a “barbell” that was the diameter of a broomstick and the weights were these plastic case container like things that were filled with concrete or sand. Pretty much what I had was a weight set made by Rubbermaid. There was even a cap you could unscrew on each one where you could let a little sand out or add some. I loved that damn weight set, I thought it was awesome, but hey I was 9 years old and I was about to be like Arnold (growing up all my friends wanted to “Be like Mike”, I wanted to be the Terminator). Something about lifting weights and growing muscle has always intrigued me. I believe my Dad had a part in my fascination with working out. My dad has always been built, maybe not as aesthetic or as big as my celebrity and cartoon idols but compared to my friend’s fathers and anyone that I personally known my dad was, still is, swole. My dad was the one to show me what a bench press, bicep curl, and lat pull down were. Let’s just say he paved the way for me. Now my father showed me the in and outs of the weight room, but my perception of pure brute strength came from my mother and the rest of the Boughtons. Those Boughtons let me tell ya. Have you heard of the term “Construction Strong”? Well if you looked up that term in the dictionary, there would be a picture of the Boughton Family. Now I have never seen my uncle touch a dumbbell but he could pick up an 80 pound sack of concrete in each hand and scale a ladder at the same time, the crazy thing is my mom would be right behind him with another sack a concrete. You’d think we were a family of vikings, if it weren't for most of us being vertically challenged and that one tan skinned kid aka me. The Boughtons are just a solid group of individuals with a tenacity for work, not desk jockeying work, but physical manual labor in the elements of nature type of work. To this day, my 72 year old grandmother still mows 1 acre of grass with a push mower. The damn thing isn't even self propelled. That’s what I call Functional Fitness; yeah cool “Fran” time bro but can you mix concrete with a shovel and wheel barrow, frame a house or build an award winning Mardi Gras float in less than a week. I think not. Again being able to lift weights and not call a “professional” to change your light bulb is another blog topic for a later date. I owe a lot to my family and my upbringing for my love of working out. The patriarch of the Boughtons, my grandfather, is who I received my first protein shake. Now I’m not talking about the delicious whey protein shake you and I are accustomed to today. I’m talking old school; glass of whole milk, 4 raw eggs, and a tsp of vanilla extract-protein shake (needless to say this was my first and last “old school” protein shake).
I was 15 when Hurricane Katrina hit the Mississippi Gulf Coast (if you are not familiar with this area, the location I am talking about is “The Landmass” between New Orleans and Alabama). Everything was destroyed and we didn't have school for months, so there wasn't anything to do besides to either work out and/or make a little pocket change gutting houses and cleaning debris. Let me tell you, tearing down soaking wet, moldy drywall got old quick. There was a few of us that really got into working out at this time; one of which really got into it, stuck with it and he now has his IFBB Pro Card. Ready for this, the dude is a VEGAN... Which is not totally unheard of these days. To compete in the world of bodybuilding it’s 90 percent diet, I don’t care what you say, it is. So when your food intake is all veggies and you are committed to pumping iron, yeah you are going to be shredded.
So we all hit the weights pretty hard from sophomore to senior year of high school. You know you're doing something right when your classmates all claim that you're on roids. “Nah’ bruh, blame it on genetics, two a days at the gym, copious amounts of grilled chicken breast and the occasional case of Keystone Light. (what, I was carb loading). I played football in high school a couple of times but I kept getting injured in the weight room due to poor programming and improper coaching on weightlifting technique from my “all knowledgeable coaches”. I got stronger outside of the football weight room by going to other gyms and doing research on my own. This is one of the reasons I later finally chose a career path that I’m in now.
Then came college. I know you’ve heard of “Gaining that Freshman 50″. Well I took it up a notch and gained a whopping 70 pounds after high school. I was what you called a career student. I took advantage of everything college had to offer, except the academic part. I didn't hit the books hard until my 3rd freshman year and finally chose a major and stuck with it. Prior to this I hopped around from engineering, only because my friend was doing it (the same one that is a vegan body builder but I quickly realized that my math capacity was limited to counting by 45′s) to pre law (but at this time I turned 21 and there was no need to use my fake ID anymore), to finally figuring why don't I do something relevant to what I love, Working out. At this point I was 4 years into a relationship with my now wife and most of her family are educators and coaches. I stated earlier how often got hurt often in the high school weight room and I wasn’t the only one. I also had only like 2 influential teachers in my high school career, (thank you Sheila and Monty G). So I decided to go into coaching with an emphasis on strength and conditioning with a minor and history. For people that don't know, if you plan to coach a high school team you'll have to teach a class too. So I chose another topic that I really like, History, (there’s no way in hell I’m teaching math unless its only kilo to pound conversions or counting plates on a barbell). I felt like I needed to be in the classroom and in the weight room to positively motivate and inspire kids. After a 7 year stint in college and over $40k in student loans, I finally received that 4 year degree everyone rant and raves about. Another blog for another time.
With that being said, I fuel planes to pay the bills. Remember how I said my now In Laws are teachers. Well they also tell me stories of the job. It’s not the kids that have deterred me from the job, it’s the parents. I honestly don’t wont to deal with y'all all knowing, ignorant, neglectful, pig headed, selfish A-Holes. Now I know not all of you parents are like this but there’s a select few that I really don't have the time or patience for. I give props and thanks to all teachers out there. You are a group of people that are underpaid and under appreciated for what y'all do and put up with.
After 4 years and counting in the aviation industry, mortgage doesn't pay itself, I finally had the opportunity to live the American Dream. I am now an entrepreneur that owns his own business, Rah’s Gym in Bay St. Louis, Ms. I could have easily pursued my dream in an easier way and be a personal trainer at someone else’s gym. Do you see the problem with that last sentence? I’ll break it down for you. In order to truly succeed the route should never be easy. I think there’s a difference between being a personal trainer and strength coach. Lastly, being at “someone’s else’s gym” didn’t sit well with me. Especially since there weren’t any “gym’s” near me. Yes, there were health clubs, and fitness centers, and judgement free zones with pizza parties, but there were no gyms. So with the determination to finally get my Freshman 70 off, oh yeah it’s still there, and an increased limit on my card I opened my own gym. A real gym. I have no air conditioning, no smith machines, and a bunch of free weights. When people ask where my cardio section is, I simply point to the one elliptical and to the road on side of the gym and say “There’s no better cardio than feet to pavement.”
Rah’s Gym has been open for 8 month’s now and business is good for being the niche, non commercial, mainstream gym that it is. I’ve learned a lot so far; not just about running a business but about the field that I love. You know there’s so much more to working out besides heavy singles and curls for the girls. I know right, who would have thought. I house all types of athletes at the gym; Functional Fitters, aka crossfitters that don't like to be sued, Body Builders, Power lifters, Mixed Martial Artists, and even Triathletes.
It’s an exciting time to be in the fitness industry. People are finally giving a shit about their health and quality of life, and I want to be a part of it. I plan on losing my Freshman 70, are you.

1. Jorge Ben, “Meus Filhos, Meus Tesouro”, África Brasil (1976). A pretty simple song. Jorge Ben has this knack for investing the quotidian with a kind of profundity, and I just love it. The gist of the song is an imagined conversation with his children in which he asks them what they want to be when they grow up. The most poignant, beautifully-sung line in this song translates literally to “I want to be a soccer player!”
2. Philip Cohran, “The Minstrel”, On The Beach (1967). Massive Afrofuturist groove from ex-Sun Ra sideman. According to Allmusic, some of the people playing on this went on to gigs as diverse as the Agharta band (Pete Cosey) and Earth, Wind and Fire (Don Myrick). The thumb piano that anchors the groove is a creation of Cohran’s that he calls the frankiphone.
3. Gene McDaniels, “Tower of Strength”, Tower of Strength (1961). Great performance of a classic Bacharach and Hilliard tune. That falsetto is to die for.
4. Broadcast, “Goodbye Girls”, Tender Buttons (2005). Never got into this band when they were more popular (even though I probably should have). Those goofy antique synths are so joyously raucous, just barely in time, and Trish Keenan’s vocals are as delicately celestial as they’re cracked up to be. This flows nicely from the McDaniels tune — it falls somewhere between a Northern soul stomper and Young Marble Giants.
5. Amps for Christ, “Colors”, Circuits (1999). Glorious rendition of an ancient Scottish folksong. I have a real special spot in my heart for AfC — they got a good deal of attention in the indie rock press in the mid-oughts but, fairly unique among bands that won Pitchfork’s heart, they came not ought of the basement of some Chicagoland suburb but from the late 80s/early 90s SoCal powerviolence scene, a heterogenous outgrowth of US hardcore punk that took inspiration from British grindcore, Bay Area thrash, Sabbathian sludge and injected a much needed dose of good politics into the scene at a time when hardcore’s leading lights were sporting Fred Perry and Freikorps haircuts. Main dude Henry Barnes handled circuits for Man is the Bastard, who are simply one of the greatest bands the United States has ever produced: a heady mix of prog rock, US hardcore, the burgeoning “noise scene” (which was more-or-less in its infancy), thrash metal and god knows what else. As Barnes got older, his music got mellower in some ways, more intense in others, and remained fiercely committed to a better world (with a sardonic sense of humor to boot). It’s hard to say enough good things about them.
6. The Roches, “Runs in the Family”, The Roches (1979). Turns out that that all-women, multipart-harmony-heavy, Dustbowl-folk revival thing started not with Mountain Man’s terrific Made The Harbor (2010) but about three decades earlier with the Roches. This is a weird little record, kind of a mixed bag (and produced, bizarrely, by Robert Fripp, whose unmistakable Frippertronics fit surprisingly well). But some of the tunes are just stunningly beautiful, and this is one of them. The harmonies are heartbreaking and just unconventional enough to keep from turning into saccharine mush. Also I’m a big fan of any folk song that can organically work in a line as tearjerking but nerdy as “I can’t change the law of averages”.
7. Roscoe Holcomb, “I’m a Free Little Bird”, The High Lonesome Sound (1965). Listen, I know we’ve all had enough of that “white working class” mythology so beloved of both wings of capital, Trumpers and liberal imperialists alike. Think of this not in terms of “authenticity” or as a paean halcyon days of (white) class collaboration in America but as a virtuosic and joyous celebration of life that draws its strength from the well of the multinational US working class.
8. The Vibrators, “Whips and Furs”, Pure Mania (1977). From that corner of early punk that was self-consciously retrograde, a mud-caked revival of rock’n’roll, comes this nugget. It opens by quoting a Sly and the Family Stone classic — at that point already a decade old — and hits the heights of harmony with a line about a lothario who “drives a black Cadillac [with] whips and furs in the back”. Real fun pulp mag vibe here. Those ambitious little bass runs top off an already perfect song.
9. Godley and Creme, “Sandwiches of You”, L (1978). Restless, complex, delicate, sophisti-pop from the weirder half of 10cc. I really don’t even know what to say about this: it’s so accessible, funny and bizarre but it also sounds like Gentle Giant playing the Looney Tunes soundtrack. Amazing record. This will forever remind me of driving to rural Kernersville, NC in the middle of the night for work at the massive FedEx warehouse there.
10. Todd Rundgren, “Long Flowing Robe”, Runt: The Ballad of Todd Rundgren (1971). For a guy who’s done some of the weirdest records in the pop music canon, his more straightforward tracks are remarkably approachable and familiar. Although even this song is, all things considered, pretty weird: it kicks off with a clavinet (more associated with Stevie Wonder than power pop), and it includes prominent bongos and cowbell, Rundgren’s infinitely-multitracked falsettos, and a strange combination of thudding proto-metal drumming and delicate fingerpicking. But it’s also simultaneously a perfect pop song about being lonely whose chorus you can memorize before you’ve heard the full song for the first time. My dad reports that this remained a huge jam at Southeast High in Wichita in the late 70s.
11. Jefferson Airplane, “Watch Her Ride”, After Bathing at Baxter’s (1967). The sound of the Summer of Love becoming heavy metal. A paranoid but tender freakout that clearly points ahead to NWBOHM-style metal while remaining somehow heavier than metal — there’s hardly any distortion on the guitars, but they’re so resonant, their jazzy chords seeming to linger in the air forever, that they end up sounding more powerful than the filthiest drop-tune. Spencer Dryden (nephew of antifascist film star Charlie Chaplin) turns in a great drum performance.
12. Squeeze, “Hard to Find”, Cool for Cats (1979). Underrated gem from Squeeze’s second record. There’s a marvelous contrast between the white-knuckle new wave of the verse and the brief intrusion of good vibes in the chorus with handclaps, lovelorn vox, Glenn Tillbrook’s throaty cry, and bluesy arpeggios that sound like nothing so much as King Crimson (!).
13. The dBs, “Love is for Lovers”, Like This (1984). Stellar, weird powerpop (from Winston-Salem!). This is from their third record, after one half of their great songwriting duo (Chris Stamey, who pops up later on the list) had left. Still, Peter Holsapple could write a mean tune on his own. His yelp in the chorus is magnificent, so full of boyish charm — even in recent live performances, he sounds exactly the same when he sings it. True story, he came into the restaurant that I used to be a cashier at (he still lives in the Triangle, if I’m not mistaken), and I immediately said “holy shit, you’re Peter Holsapple!”, and he goes “this literally never happens”. My dad has some good stories about seeing them live when he lived in Raleigh in the 80s.
14. Orange Juice, “Holiday Hymn”, The Glasgow School (compilation 2005, originally recorded live 1981). My favorite “indie-pop” group of all time. My listening diet when I was 15 was about 80 percent grindcore, 20 percent jazz and it became about 75 percent indie pop after my dad bought me this comp. on a whim. This isn’t actually a “signature OJ” song; it was unreleased for a long time (as far as I can tell), and it’s actually a cover of a Vic Godard song (member of the class of ‘77 punk group Subway Sect before he became a noted soul revivalist). But it’s a perfect song for them to cover; that needling soul bass and the angular Byrds-playing-funk guitars work so well. “Today all the girls / will see our fire begin to glow / today all the girls / will recite Jean-Jacques Rousseau” is a very pretty, if mysterious, little line.
15. Captain Beefheart, “My Head is my Only House Unless It Rains”, Clear Spot (1972). It’s a little unfair that Don van Vliet could be one of the most influential, pioneering rock musicians of all time (Trout Mask Replica 100 percent deserves its reputation) and also have penned a Van Morrison-style soul ballad so deep it makes Van Morrison look like the Bee Gees. This sounds like a slightly offbeat, if dark and powerful, ballad, until about a minute in, and then suddenly the tension that the verse and the pre-chorus bridge build...just goes awry, in the prettiest way. The chorus turns out to be not only not-a-chorus — it only occurs once! — but one of the most subtle, propulsive riffs ever crafted.
16. Kim Fowley, “Mom and Dad”, Automatic (1974). This guy is such a Hollywood sleazebag that his Wikipedia page literally lists his occupation as “impresario”. And yet, this gorgeous fingerpicked Lou Reed-ripoff is one of the most straightforwardly-affecting records I’ve heard in my life. I barely knew who this guy was when Jonathan Woollen announced his death via Facebook and posted this track, and I swear I could barely hold back the tears after the second playback. As much as I hated Lou Reed, I deeply loved Lou Reed, and this is maybe the most Lou Reed thing ever written by someone other than Lou Reed.
17 Kyu Sakamoto, “Sukiyaki” (single, 1961). According to Wikipedia, one of the few “non-Indo-European language songs” to ever crack the Billboard top 100. Even if you don’t speak a word of Japanese — I don’t — its virtues are manifest — an effervescent tune that apparently takes the generic form of a lovelorn pop song but was composed as an anti-fascist protest of the post-WWII US-Japan alliance.
18. Sneakers, “Like a Cuban Crisis”, Racket (1992, originally recorded mid-70s?). It’s hard to imagine something that appeals to me more in descriptive terms than an angular, punchy power-pop group from NC featuring Chris Stamey (dB’s, whom we heard earlier) and Mitch Easter (Let’s Active, feature on previous mixes). And they really live up to the description, from the sparkling twin guitars of the opening riff to the perfect (non-)chorus, and bonus for the genuinely funny satire.
19. Witchfynde, “Leaving Nadir”, Give ‘Em Hell (1980). A jammer from that brief period of the NWOBHM during which a gorgeously-arpeggiated, powerpop-ish intro like the one this cut sports and a pounding, palm-muted verse could comfortably co-exist.
20. Linda Ronstadt, “Heart Like a Wheel”, Heart Like a Wheel (1974). A classic country-rock record — the country-rock record?! — that was once immensely popular, even winning a grammy, but which has so fallen by the wayside amongst the cognoscenti that I don’t feel bad about putting it on a mixtape. It’s a subtly-weird track. After a vertiginous piano opening reminiscent of a solo Bill Evans date, Ronstadt begins the song by detailing, then abruptly disavowing, a simile for the human heart. The song never quite coheres….there’s a beautiful chorus, but one that’s cut short by an extended instrumental break featuring heart-rending cello (?) — but that makes it all the more addictive — how can you hear that (much-delayed) chorus just twice?! Another record that inexplicably reminds me of North Carolina, even though Ronstadt was the scion of a wealthy manufacturing family from Arizona who had, far as I can tell, no special connection to NC.
21. DJ Screw, “Every Day, All Day [South Circle]”, Chapter 226: Million Dollar Hands (1995). A change-of-pace superficially, but that melancholy melody line forms a natural transition from the Ronstadt track in my mind. Absolutely classic, unrelentingly-bleak mid-90s chopping and screwing. The South Circle track is a merciless g-funk cut to begin with, but the Screw remix is a monolithic thing of beauty.
22. The Brides of Funkenstein, “Disco to Go”, Funk or Walk (1978). Hilarious yet deadly-serious, powerful yet loose P-Funk spinoff. This reminds me of swimming at the apartment pool when my parents divorced dad moved to the heart of downtown Kansas City to be near his work; this record was one of the few that we could all agree on as a family to put on the boombox during afternooon swims. This was back when downtown was inhabited by the kind of straight-up phreaks who stuffed hardcore guy-on-guy pornography into their neighbor’s mailboxes apparently just for the hell of it (finding this sort of thing in the mail among the form responses from fan mail I’d sent to Vinny Testaverde is one of my first memories). E-I-O-diss-CO-to-GO!
23. Trinity and U-Brown, “Nice Up the Yard”, (single, 1982). My favorite riff on the “Boxing” rhythm ever released. Something about this just crackles with youthful energy and energy. Almost totally-unknown — this is off a comp I pulled off the internet called DUB HOT DUBS several years back, and I can’t find a single thing about either of the artists, but still, totally classic.
24. Linton Kwesi Johnson, “Fight Dem Back”, Forces of Victory (1979). Militantly progressive Black British reggae. One of the funniest and, yet, most deadly-serious songs ever recorded.
25. The Dils, “Sound of the Rain”, Made in Canada (1980). Marxist-Leninist powerpop — nuff said. Name a catchier tune whose chorus begins “I don’t listen to the cops / I wish they all were dead”.
26. Fairport Convention, “Cajun Woman”, Unhalfbricking (1969). One of the slighter — but catchier — tracks from a top-10 record for me. Fairport, at that point featuring two of my favorite artists of all time (Linda Thompson and her husband Richard), turned in a massive, spiritual brit-folk-revival LP that was also stuffed with oddities like this zydeco-jammer. Like many Fairport tunes, the rapturous boogie is cut with a surprising gravitas. That slightly discordant note in the chorus is perfect.
27. Magma, “Üdü Ẁüdü”, Üdü Ẁüdü (1976). There are some of those “underground canon” records that are fun to listen to, that tickle your brain, that are intellectually exciting. And then there are some that, even though they’re sung in a made-up language and performed by a French band 32 years before you first heard it, feel so familiar that it’s as if they were written by dear friends. That joyous background whoop at 1:51 is one of my favorite moments in recorded music. A pulsating, polyrhythmic, deliriously joyous mass of music that seems to prefigure “Brothersport” down to the details.
28. The Fans, “Giving Me That Look In Your Eyes”, Giving Me that Look In Your Eyes EP (1979). Feckless, extremely-active Bristol new-wave-cum-powerpop. This reminds me of Vampy Weekend a little bit, actually, just in terms of how dizzily sucrotic this is. Unfortunately they didn’t realize very much other stuff but most “throwaway bands” manage only one great lost single — the Fans had several. If you dig this, have a listen to the equally-great “You Don’t Live Here Anymore”.
29. Alice Coltrane, “Sivaya”, Transcendence (1977). How are hipsters not all over this? Immediately accessible, burning-with-soul, post-apocalyptic prayers to god from one of the most respected jazz musicians of all time. It’s really hard to express how simultaneously and simple and deep this is; there’s something especially beautiful about this ragged, loose beauty when you know exactly how complex and brutal her music could be.
30. DJ Screw, “It Was All a Dream [Shaq]”, Chapter 11: Headed 2 Da Classic (1996?). Mention of the original Shaq record is something of a snarky in-joke amongst people that know anything about basketball or music, but this cut — while manifestly unoriginal — is genuinely beautiful and the Screw mix accentuates the deep vibes. Shaq’s not a great rapper but there is some real solid production on this and the big-workin-class-dreams-come-true bit tugs at the heartstrings.
