Muse Introspection

//So I saw this introspection on Wandavision the other day, and it kinda covered some of where she came from and where she went to, meaning the multiverse of madness.

This introspection just reminded me or really showcased that in the MCU, Wanda is a tragic hero her story is that of a fallen hero. As it is when we are first introduced to her and her brother we learn that they are orphans on the street that were slighted by another hero (even though he didnt do it, it was his weapons). By the end of the movie we see the true nature of her and her brother, before his untimely end, by which point Wanda had lost her last remaining family and her home was destroyed sending her adrift in the world.

The next time we see Wanda, she has grown into her powers and being a part of a team that does good in the world and is saving lives. To be honest, at the start of Civil War I feel like this was her height. She was as I said really coming into her own, she was a part of something greater than herself that she believed in, and she was making a positive difference in the world. However things on her mission go astray and she is blamed for an attack she tried to prevent but had saved many more had she not acted. As the tensions between the splintered factions of team and she takes a side against someone she found herself falling for. At the end of the movie we see her at a low point for sure, but clearly not as far as she would fall. As she is incarcerated with the others we see the 'measures' that were taken for someone of her abilities and we see her restrained in many different ways, however the point is not the restrains its what they had done to her. We see her shrunken away in a corner clearly disassociating the situation in a blank stare and her skin looks a little grey meaning there is all sort of things that are not going right with her here.

After a time when the Infinity War is started we see that she is living a live on the run, a bit of an opposite of where she was a time ago. Now she is a fugitive, on the run from the law, and really living just day to day, however she has Vision as she finds love in him, and honestly a home in him. However because part of him is linked to the mind stone which Thanos will come for sooner rather than later, she is then faced with the worst case scenario. Either she kills vision to protect the stone or Thanos does it and kills many more there after, while of course the plan was not for Vision to die, the plan goes awry again on her. This time forcing her to have to kill the man she loves to save the galaxy, the worst case scenario for anyone in love and the burden of this action fell on her shoulders. While she did her duty to the galaxy and everyone around her, the respite of having save the galaxy at the cost of her lover was short lived as time was rewound around them and she watches Vision get killed for a second time in the span of a couple of minutes, this time left with a corps to remember the act. Wanda's woe is short lived as she is dusted away presumably to not feel or have to deal with the grief that was welling up inside of her.

After being gone for five years and taking a battle for essentially the soul of the universe and winning she is left to pick up the pieces of her life yet again in her life and this time alone while dealing with the grief of Vision being gone. Eventually she finds a deed to a piece of land in a rural town where Vision had planned to make a home with her and have a lifetime together, its this revelation of what he planned to do, on what he wanted out of life that pushes her over the edge and her grief takes over and manifests 'The Hex'. While everyone I think says that Wanda is horrible for what she did in Westview, I honestly dont think she did it on purpose. Our bodies and brains will do whatever it takes to self preserve, to survive trauma. Its how memories are repressed for decades and longer, because something so horrible forced the mind to block it out. I think that i what happened here, Wanda grief, her pain, the memories were too much to bear that her mind/powers created the hex and designed the sitcom worlds that she idolized and found such joy and comfort in when she was a child living in a war torn country. Wanda I feel wasnt one to make people around her suffer for her pain, because the people in the hex were under a crushing devisting grief while playing their 'roles' it tells me that really there was a large degree that she wasnt in control of. Her body was reacting to the grief that was crushing her soul, her spirit. Though through these sitcom events she experiences motherhood and the joy it did bring her, even though it wasnt real in the sense of actual reality and outside of the hex, she came to love the boys she had imagined would be hers. However as she realized what had happened around her, and what was happening to the people around her she tore down the hex because it was the right thing to do, because she truly did have remorse for what she had done. Even though it meant that she had to give up Vision and her boys, she removed the hex and exiled herself.

The last and seemingly final time that we see Wanda is some time after the start of her exile, and all that time she had poured over The Darkhold to see if there was a way to return her boys to her. While she did not truly have the boys in a real sense, she did carry them inside her body for a time, and she did raise them and loved them. Ultimately it was the final temptation of Wanda Maximoff, as she spent an unknown time obsessing over the dark tome and the power it presented her we see or eventually see the truth about her exile. Her skin is ashy and pasty, her eyes and features sunken in, her eyes dark and dark circles around them. Clearly the obsession in the dark tome had had taken its toll on her mind and body by the lack of self care. Finally we the fall of her pride as she chases a young girl through the multiverse without discrimination or scruples seeking to take her power to travel to a universe where her children exist in reality. Though this she attacks allies and kills innocent people all in the name of trying to get to her family. All of this and everything she does culminates in being in the same space as the children she longed for along with the version of herself in that universe, and being face to face with these children, they reject her calling her a monster. As to them and what she had done by remotely taking over that Wanda's mind she had become a monster, a monster that she swore to keep away from her children. This moment of being rejected, after all of the pain she had endured, all of the sacrifice, and all of the obsessions she had realized in this moment how far she had fallen. Instead of carrying on in this world without her family, without her kids, without Vision, without seemingly any hope she opts for death and brings the mountain where the altar for the Scarlet Witch was created under on top of her, bringing down the curtain on her tragedy.

All of this to say, that Wanda was a tragic hero, if we look at scripture a more biblical sense she had become a fallen angel, in the end becoming twisted and distorted from the version of herself she was before her fall from grace. In a more modern sense she was another Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader type of character, she had done so much in the name of love. At every step she had done the right thing even when it put her own interests out of her reach, even when it pained her to do so on so many levels. Even at the end when she had seen to the depths she had sunken to she still did the right thing by everyone and in the end opted to put her and her power out of reach by anyone, she had seen the twisted monster she had become and knew that she could be tempted and twisted again and opted to not allow anyone to be hurt because of herself.

Anyway I just wanted to talk about Wanda and who she is as a character in the MCU, stories of fallen heros, fallen angels, becoming the thing you swore to fight, all of these similar themes for whatever reason interest me. Perhaps just the idea that circumstances in life could change, that people could change for the better or for the worse are fascinating. Beecause in one way or another we are all the heroes of our own story, this is just another way a person's story could turn out.

Something about the fact that the Loki writers have confirmed multiple times that his variants all look so different because of their inherit chaotic nature.

Something about the fact that it says in the show that the universe wants to be free so it manifests chaos in the form of Lokis.

Something about the fact that Loki is the TVA’s most common variant because every version of them refuses to adhere to their ‘destiny’.

Something about the fact that there was a scene in the show where Ravonna said “this is about order & chaos. I’m order-“ and then a loki variant violently burst in, implying “I’m chaos.”

Something about the fact that the entire story arc of the Loki series was about him choosing to free the sacred timeline & embrace all the anarchy & endless possibilities- positive & negative- that came with it instead of continuing to enforce the absolute order that would keep them all safe.

Something about Loki literally sacrificing himself so chaos could reign.

Something about the fact that Loki tried for years to beat He Who Remains through playing by his rules, and was only able to do it when he came up with a solution so insane that HWR didn’t anticipate it.

Something about the fact that messing with people’s minds & using tricky and unorthodox means of fighting has always been Loki’s Thing.

Something about the fact that at least one loki variant has the natural ability to rewrite the laws of time, space, and reality.

Something about the fact that Loki is literally the god of chaos- in the series, in the comics, and in Norse mythology.

And also..

Something about the fact that all of Wanda’s variants look and act exactly the same.

Something about the fact that the TVA never mentioned Wanda whatsoever despite her being a Reality Breaking Cosmic Anomaly.

Something about the fact that Wanda fans thought her reading the Darkhold caused the multiverse to open but Kevin Feige confirmed it was Sylvie killing He Who Remains that opened the multiverse, and in turn allowed Wanda to hear her kids through the Darkhold.

Something about the fact that Wanda almost always uses her ‘chaos magic’ to control people/events & bend reality to her will, which directly contradicts the meaning of chaos.

Something about the fact that Wanda has never once had any sort of symbolic arc or subplot or character dive directly linking her to chaos as a concept.

Something about the fact that the only thing about Wanda you could consider overtly chaotic is her propensity to go on destructive rampages when she doesn’t get her way.

And finally..

Something about the fact that, in the mcu, Wanda is constantly awarded with the chaos moniker- they decided to keep the ‘chaos magic’ name from the comics, fans call her the queen of chaos, and she gets credited as the token reality breaker pretty much constantly… while they’ve never even acknowledged on-screen that Loki’s the literal God of Chaos.

real talk, though.

if vision quest is about white vision regaining his memories. even if she's dead, wanda should be in that.

you can't give me wandavision and then pretend that vision's memories wouldn't largely involve wanda. or you can, but then that would carry a through line of wanda caring more about vision than he does about her (or, at least, that his priorities were/are different - which you can support with infinity war and his decision to go jump into battle and leave wanda once he noticed the avengers needed his help). and regardless, she would and should still be part of those memories.

that would be the best place to confirm or deny what the mcu official timeline is speculating re: wanda's death because a white vision who truly regained his memories would also probably seek her out, depending on how he relates to those memories, even if he doesn't accept them into who he is or decides to be.

Although his brow stitched into an inquisitive not-quite-frown, Eddie responded more demonstratively to Wanda's silent affection by bringing his arms up and settling his hands about her wrists, then his forearms atop hers, as if to tug her embrace more tightly about himself... or simply to hold it secure.

"Hey babe," he murmurs, turning over one shoulder to glance at her through his periphery. He knew better than to ask if she was okay. When she sought contact like this, there was usually a reason... and this was one of her favorite methods to soothe herself.

So instead of peppering her with interrogatories, he simply offered his support.

"I'm right here. Not goin' anywhere."

His mom, Lorna and others are constantly bringing up Wanda, which Peter doesn't handle well (as his way of dealing with it is different from theirs), but he manages to keep it together in front of them. Back in the darkened room Peter looks around at trophies he's won with Wanda, things they've crafted, souvenirs of their exploits, photos of their mundane adventures. The room is getting darker, the surroundings are swallowed by blackness and there he sees Wanda, transparent and out of reach.

If I could bring you back There are truths and confessions I'd tell you I'd set things straight And I believe that you would love and forgive me I know it's too late I need to let go

Peter imagining confessing all the stupid things he did, including seeking contact with their mutant supremacist of a father and nearly getting killed as a result. Imaginary Wanda gives a little, non-judgemental smile and reaches out to hold his cheek.

{i am the caretaker of souls} Just me sitting here shipping Stephen and Wanda hard because they both have heartbreaking closure to their previous loves and post-DSMoM there is such potential for real healing and bonding with them, change my mind. Except don’t, because I love the idea of this ship and all its messy hope. It would be an emotional rollercoaster, a rocky start, and forgiveness on both sides is needed, but like... the development. The slow burn. Them finding comfort in each other after losing so much. Him helping her not only because she’s a dangerous witch who needs help but also because he cares. Yes, please. Sign me up.
