Kim chose differently

At the start of the series, Kim’s behavior was noted to be insensitive as he was seen making fun of Ivan for not being able to confess to Mylene back in “Origins part 1”, aiding and siding with Chloe against Alya back in “Lady Wifi”, ridiculing the zookeeper and his panther in “Animan”, etc. (more here) Now, although Kim did express less and less of this behavior as the series progressed, we never actually saw him being confronted about it, even more so was that we never truly saw him look back on his mistakes when situations escalated against him.

In “Derision”, Kim is finally faced with the reality of his behavior, and it is here where we realize Kim was all in all oblivious to the consequences of the things he says and does, as we not only witness him proclaim his admiration for Chloe’s beauty and sense of humor in front of his girlfriend Ondine, but also finding no fault in the cruel prank he helped carry out with Chloe the year before that humiliated and traumatized Marinette.

When Ondine shows great disappointment in Kim’s insensitivity and begins informing him of the wrong in both his behavior and actions, Kim is unwilling to be compliant about the situation as he genuinely believed he was not doing anything wrong by simply performing pranks and making jokes, why? because to him, it was only natural to assume everyone around him would share his sense of humor and find his actions just as funny as he did. Up to now, Kim has had the liberty of saying whatever he wanted and doing whatever he felt like, without anyone confronting him about his behavior.

So to Kim, Ondine wasn’t helping, she was threatening his free spirit, restricting him from speaking his mind and limiting what he could do. Hearing others tell him it wasn’t good to be himself, was an insult to him and his way of life. As a result, through his mind alone, Kim was willing to believe there was no fault with him, everyone else was just in the wrong for not attempting to share his sense of humor and were unwilling to understand that his actions(through his eyes alone) were only ever meant to be " just a joke". However, what ultimately makes Kim reevaluate himself, was coming to terms with what led him to be akumatized into Dark Humor in the first place. Near the end of “Derision”, when Kim is once again faced with the same conversation over his behavior, he looks at the charm Ladybug gave him and is reminded of the little words of wisdom he left her, “May it help you avoid making the same mistakes again”.

Although Kim was originally angry over Ondine’s words the first time, he understood it was his unwillingness to listen that caused him to be akumatized. Rather than make the same mistake again, Kim decided to take the time to really think about exactly what Ondine was trying to tell him and figure out if what she was saying was true or not, and sure enough, he realized she was right.

Ondine told him he does awful things even when he isn’t akumatized, and despite him not knowing whether or not his jokes would actually hurt someone, it was no excuse, because although he believed such jokes would be just as entertaining to everyone as it was to him, the fact of the matter was that his jokes were not always morally right. In one little moment, everything he had said and done in his life came flooding back all at once, and for the first time, Kim took the time to really think about what it was like being in the position of those who suffered the pain of his jokes, and thought about what Marinette had to go through as the person she liked not only humiliated her, but broke her heart, a feeling Kim had likely realized he was all to familiar with the day he had attempted to express his own affection to a girl he liked, that girl being of course, Chloe.

Chloe told him the year before that if you like a girl you should get on one knee, compliment her and give her jewelry, and as we all saw in “Dark Cupid”, that’s exactly what he attempted to do with her when he tried to ask her to be his valentine. The results were of course disastrous as Kim realized he was not only rejected, but humiliated as Chloe took an embarrassing picture of him and shared it with the entire school as a joke. It didn’t matter if Chloe did or didn’t know her little joke would hurt him, the pain was still all to real for him.

Kim said in the beginning of “Derision” that he is the way he is and he likes it, he had no intention of giving up what he believed was simply a part of who he was, but upon realizing the true pain his sense of humor had inflicted onto the people around him, Kim was willing to accept that living a life where he would continue to hurt others over his jokes for his own amusement, was simply not a way of life he wanted to continue upholding.

Back in “Syren”, when Kim expressed his admiration for the heroes, he explained to Ondine just how much he wanted to be just like them, but because he had no real powers of his own or any way of knowing how to train to be a superhero, Kim decided to instead uphold his life as someone who would help others in his day to day life, just as any hero would.

In “Party Crasher”, when Kim helped master Fu, Kim explained that he believed being selfless and helping others was something that should be as natural a reflex as it was for fish who would swim in the waters. It was Kim’s aspirations and drive to be selfless that made master Fu decide to entrust him with the powers of the monkey miraculous.

And so, as Kim was faced with the reality of his behavior near the end of “Derision”, the choice was left to him to either continue living as he was, regardless of what others thought of him, and expect others to abide by his views of the world and his sense of humor, or set aside his pride and accept the truth about himself, that he had committed wrong to not just one person, but to many good people.

Kim ultimately chose to commit himself to changing by making the effort to reevaluate himself and be willing to sacrifice the part of his sense of humor he now realized was never morally correct, not just for the sake of the good people around him, but for himself as he strived to become the hero he always wanted to be. Kim understood he had a lot to make amends for, and although he knew a sincere apology would not erase everything he had done, it was more than enough to let Marinette feel willing to set aside their past and give him another chance to better himself.

Summary: The girls decided they were overdue for a hang out in their favorite park. Rose was delighted but the park and small things kept reminding her of their former friend Marinette. She knew she missed the girl but she would never admit it to the others and a big part of her hoped the girl missed them. If she did it certainly wasn't enough to set aside whatever she had against Lila. But Rose was an optimist, that is until she saw just how much they were missed.

The Jardins des Tuileries was truly the Girl Squad’s favorite park to hang out in. It was picturesque and made Rose feel like she was in a fairytale no matter what direction she looked. It always made her feel unbelievably happy when they had the time to visit and just have the day to relax and do whatever they had planned. Though it had been a while since they had been able to go due to Lila’s busy schedule and since they deemed it ‘Their’ spot, none of the girls wanted to go to the park without their sweet Italian friend. To be honest though Rose did feel guilty that they were there considering that said friend wasn’t even in Paris that weekend. Lila apparently had some sort of party to go to that she couldn’t miss considering the host was a close personal friend. They all understood of course but they had been bummed out since they had planned a day in their park, but Lila, ever the kind soul, said they could go without her and have fun since they had already had everything planned. She had looked sad at giving her permission and at first they hadn’t wanted to go without her but Alya had been in a mood lately and they wanted to cheer her up with some good old fashioned girl time.

Their favorite journalist had lit up when they had talked about visiting the park and truly it had been awhile since all of them could hang out and not just in smaller groups. That was why they had all been so excited and put their everything into planning and working around everyone’s schedules, Lila had even been free! But then she remembered that party a little last minute but Rose could never be frustrated with her like she knew some of the girls had been at the news. It wasn’t Lila’s fault she had a bad memory, apparently she used to have a photographic memory but because of an accident that occurred when she saved the lives of an elderly couple, she had lost her photographic memory and had problems remembering things ever since. Rose had helpfully reminded the girls about that before they got too frustrated and just like that they had let it go, not that they had said anything to Lila but Rose didn’t want there to be tension when Lila got back from her small trip.

Rose knew there was tension anyway and the source was Alya. No one knew what was wrong but after the interview Ladybug did on Aurore and Mireille’s blog the reporter had been in a mood. At first Rose had been like most of the class and thought it was because Ladybug and Chat Noir were no longer partners but something told her that was not the issue. Contrary to what a lot of others thought of her, Rose’s head was not constantly in the clouds and she could be observant. Alya had many signs when she was in distress over her favorite hero duo, her hands were either ink stained or still had her compression gloves on them after a long night(s) of writing or typing, she tended to wear worn t-shirts rather than her beloved flannels and she always had this fire in her eye. There was no fire this time. Her hands were still ink stained, but her nails were bitten. She was wearing the worn t-shirts, but it was the same shirt days in a row. Then there were her eyes. Oh her eyes.

Rose loved peoples’ eyes, she knew how creepy that sounded but she was very much a believer of the saying that eyes were the windows to the soul. If she could draw she would have sketchbooks full of her favorite people’s eyes in her life. Her all time favorite eyes were Juleka’s even if she hid them behind her hair, she sighed as she thought about her best friend who seemed to be more busy as of late. She missed the girl’s honey-hued eyes, but she understood that her friend had things to do, but those eyes held everything her shy friend couldn’t say. They lit up with joy, practically sparkling like the amber pieces she hid in her treasure chest in her room on her boat. When Juleka was angry, Rose thought her eyes resembled one lone piece of yellow apatite that was in the same treasure chest as the amber. Honestly Rose could go on and on about Juleka’s eyes, or really any one of her friend’s, the point was she saw how dull Alya’s eyes were and that was never a word she would use to describe Alya’s eyes. Ever.

Even now, they were dull as all of them started setting up their picnic. She pretended well enough though Rose observed, as it seemed like no one else noticed the too-wide smile Alya had painted on or the tense way she held her shoulders. Or maybe they had and they were just like Rose, holding their observations to themselves. Either way, they just wanted to have a nice time and bringing up whatever was bringing Alya down was sure to bring the whole group down. It sounded cruel but that’s just how they operated. They hung out and had fun until the end of their planned outing and that’s when they would bring up anything bothering them, so Rose would be patient and wait till the end of their hang-out to ask Alya and be there if her friend needed comfort. It felt weird to wait because she really wanted to know if her friend was okay and what was troubling her and waiting and not asking made her feel this crushing weight of guilt.

Thinking about it, this hadn’t been how they used to do things in the group. When it was Marinette with them they had no problem asking what was troubling each other or simply bringing up their own troubles because they knew they could talk it out or have the group distract them. Rose could admit to herself that she missed how the group was and she could also admit it was because of Marinette that the group used to be so open and wonderful. Marinette made them all feel like their troubles weren’t as big as they felt they were in a good way, she was a shoulder to cry on and you could always count on that no matter what, and she was always determined to help or fix whatever the issue was. Rose missed Marinette, she would admit that to herself because she could admit it to no one else, she missed those blue-bell eyes. They never spoke about her anymore and to be honest, Rose hadn’t thought about her in a while.

Her heart clenched at the thought. That used to be one of her best friends. They used to gush about the latest romance movies and the latest installments of the C-dramas they followed thanks to Marinette’s Mom's love of them. They used to have sleepovers, one-on-one and with the group that was made all the more fun and cozy by Marinette’s parents letting them bake their own sweets. Marinette used to help Rose pick out the perfect stickers for her scrapbook no matter how long Rose took, she had been endlessly patient with her. Marinette had been one of the first people she wanted to show a finished song or poem to because her excitement and joy were so infectious. Marinette was kind, compassionate, loving, loyal, and overall wonderful. She had been a great friend, one Rose had thought she had known and one she had ultimately lost. No, not lost, Rose and the others had pushed her away, but all the blame couldn’t be put on them. Marinette had been extremely rude to Lila and had continued to do so and make the girl feel awkward and unwelcome so they simply stopped…everything. They stopped talking to her, they stopped hanging out with her or inviting her to hang out and slowly the hole she had left had been filled by Lila.

It’s not like they had meant for it to go on for so long. They had genuinely thought that Marinette would cave and apologize for her behavior towards Lila and that they would all get past it and become friends. Marinette was a lot of things but they had forgotten, she was also incredibly stubborn. She thought she was right so there was no proving her otherwise despite them telling her how good a person Lila was and all her charitable deeds, it was like it went in one ear and out the other. It had been frustrating until eventually they forgot, it sounded awful when Rose thought about it but they well and truly forgot about what they had been doing and in the process they had forgotten about Marinette. They were having so much fun welcoming Lila and then just being her friend! She always had amazing stories to tell and advice to give, she had connections that she graciously promised to make for them, and she was such a strong and kind person despite life making things hard on her with chronic illnesses and such.

“What’s going on in that head of yours Pinkie Pie?” Alix’s voice pulled Rose from her thoughts.

“Oh nothing, just got lost in a stray thought is all. It’s a beautiful day today isn’t it?” Rose deflected as she did best.

“Very! I’m just glad it’s not as windy as it’s been.” Mylène chirped as she set down a plate of cheeses and sandwich meats on their picnic blanket that Alix brought.

“Oh I know what you mean,” Alix said as she popped a grape into her mouth and placed down her own dish of sliced fruits and bread on the blanket. “My dad nearly had a fit the other day because he had the window open and his paperwork almost escaped with the wind.”

“Poor thing.” Alya giggled behind her hand, it was so good to hear her giggle. She too brought something for the picnic, her mom had made the girls some roasted red pepper tapenade that Rose was especially looking forward to with the baguette Alix had brought. Alya also placed down the Quiche Lorraine they had bought from a traiteur on their way to their spot, at first they had had their hearts set on some tomato tarts despite it not being summer, but the smell of the Quiche Lorraine won them over in the end.

Rose smiled as the girls spoke and placed down the lemon meringue tart she brought as well as the juice. She had bought the tart before they had all started gathering to meet as she was assigned dessert for this particular day. They all took turns to bring the dessert ever since…ever since Marinette was no longer part of the group. No one spoke about it but Rose knew, she knew each time they bit into whatever dessert the others brought that it didn’t compare to anything they could have gotten at Tom and Sabine’s. She felt bad saying that about the new boulangerie & pâtisserie she and her parents went to but she knew it in her heart to be true. Ever since the class cut ties with Marinette, it was awkward to go to Tom & Sabine’s and act like everything was normal and Rose really didn’t have the heart to try and do so. That was when Rose had told her mother about Marinette’s change in character and why she hadn’t been going to Tom & Sabine’s to get her pastries and bread.

Her mother had been upset for her and rather down about not going to Tom & Sabine’s for their goods, they were regulars, but her father hadn’t minded much. He had actually been a little happy to try and find a boulangerie closer to home. He had and luckily it was a boulangerie & pâtisserie just like Tom & Sabine’s but what he didn’t want to admit and what her mother wouldn’t voice out loud was that it was nowhere near as good as the treats they had grown accustomed to. Her mother had begun to not so subtly ask her if things with Marinette were better and Rose wanted to cry every time she asked, because goodness did she want things to be better.

Rose wanted Marinette to be part of the group again, she wanted them to all be together. She wished whatever Marinette thought Lila had done or whatever thing she was jealous of could be resolved so they could all be one big group of friends again. Rose just knew that Marinette and Lila would get along if Marinette would just give the Italian a chance, but Marinette was blinded by her love. Where once Rose would have thought that to be peak romance and devotion, now she found it slightly aggravating. Kind of like all the times their Team Adrienette Plans failed because Marinette couldn’t do what was planned. Rose was a believer in True Love but love still took hard work, her parents were a glowing example for her, so every time a plan failed she couldn’t help but feel like Marinette hadn’t been trying hard enough.

Doubting a friend was always an awful feeling

“I wonder what’s going on over there.” Alya mumbled.

Rose blinked her thoughts away as she turned towards where Alya was looking. It was the bit of the park that was closer to the Place de la Concorde, it seemed like people were evacuating the area but not in a hurry so definitely not an akuma, besides they hadn’t heard the Akuma Alert go off.

“Well this might have something to do with it.” Alix announced as she grabbed a paper off a tree and brought it over to them. “Seems like they are going to be shooting a music video of some kind over there. They rented the space, just that space, not the whole park. So like we can watch from a certain distance if we wanted,”

“Oh that sounds cool!” Mylène said as she too looked over at the spot where people looked like they were setting up tables, trailers and other equipment.

“Did you guys want to go over?” Alya asked.

“Nah. We just set up our picnic, we would have to put everything back and then find a new spot and that just sounds like too much work to do on an empty stomach.” Alix groaned before she sprawled out on the grass next to the blanket.

“To be fair we haven’t taken out everything,” Alya teased as she reached into her lunch bag and brought out a small container, “I forgot to bring out the butter.”

“Alix brings up a good point. What if we eat then go see what the music video is about? I mean they are just setting up right now.” Rose suggested.

“Betsy Bubblegum gets it!” Alix said from her spot on the grass which made Rose laugh, she adored the nicknames Alix came up with for her. They had a good mellow time just enjoying their picnic and Rose couldn’t remember the last time they had had such a peaceful day. Lila just made life so exciting and interesting but it was nice to just be once in a while. Though, she did miss Lila and wished she could have joined them on such a beautiful day.

“Hey girls! Surprise!” Rose perked up when she heard a familiar voice and turned to see Lila walking towards them. She was so happy to see her friend that she jumped up so she could embrace the girl.

“Lila! What are you doing here?” Alya asked, her mouth agape.

“Oh it was the darndest thing.” Lila said with a wave of her hand as she sat on the picnic blanket and got comfortable. “The party for my friend got canceled. I can’t say who they are as you guys know, biiiiiig celebrity who didn’t want anyone to know they are vacationing here in Paris, but poor thing ate something bad I guess and got sick.”

“Oh that’s awful!” Mylène gasped. “Where did they eat?”

“Well, I don’t want to say anything. I’m sure the staff was just having an off day or something…but they said they had gone to eat at Le Grand Paris.” Lila confessed. Rose stiffened when she saw Alya go absolutely rigid, the smile on her face froze. Rose hoped she had heard wrong, because if she didn’t she didn’t like the odds of Alya not exploding at Lila for her comment. Especially because Alya had been off for a while so this was not a normal Alya they were dealing with, this was a stressed Alya.

Alya opened her mouth and Rose braced herself but just before Alya could say anything they all heard Mylène’s soft voice, “Is that Kagami?”

All of them turned so fast to see Kagami who strode over to the part of the park that was being used for the music video. Rose had no idea what she was doing over there but she was pretty sure that was not where she was supposed to be. She could hear Alix fill Lila in over what they were doing over in that spot and how the Italian made a sound of interest. It was with that one sound that they all decided to pack up their things and move closer. As they got closer Rose saw Kagami show a couple security guards-who Rose guessed was with the music video crew-a badge of some kind and was let through.

“I wonder what Kagami is doing over there.” Alya mumbled.

“Well, she is rather pretty, maybe she’s a background dancer or something.” Rose suggested.

“Isn’t she a sword person thingy?” Lila asked. “Not to judge or anything, but why would she be involved in a music video? It just doesn’t seem like something she would be interested in.”

“Well maybe-” Mylène had begun but cut off as they saw another arrival of people they knew walking towards the film location of the music video. This time a known duo. Aurore and Mireille this time walked the path towards the security guards, Aurore was shielding the both of them with her parasol and the two giggled about something. They showed the guards badges and Rose watched in shock as the two made their way over to Kagami and gave the girl a friendly greeting and hugs. Kagami hadn’t even looked awkward nor like she wanted to push them away, she actually looked happy. Genuinely happy.

“They know each other?” Alix asked but no one answered.

“This just got weirder because I’m pretty sure that’s Ondine heading over there as well.” Alya said clearly shocked.

And she was right too. Ondine, with the kind of confidence that Rose envied, strutted over to security guards to show them her badge all the while waving at Kagami, Aurore and Mireille. Once she was given the okay she ran up to the trio and pulled them into a group hug which made the small group break out into giggles. It was such an odd little group that Rose was kind of thrown for a loop as she watched them interact and she could tell her friends were as well. She could see Alya’s fingers flying across her screen texting Kim, probably questioning him about Ondine but as much as Rose loved Kim, she knew he probably had no idea what Ondine was doing there. She was trying to guess what the next surprise was going to be but nothing would have prepared her for seeing Luka and a completely different Marinette.

“Mari…” Alya breathed out when she too saw their former friend.

It was a shock, perhaps the most shocking thing that they had seen yet. She just looked so different from their former friend that it was hard to believe that was who they were seeing walk hand in hand with Luka. For one, her hair seemed to be longer since she had it up in loose space buns, the shock wasn’t that it was longer and they hadn’t noticed, no the shock was the fact the underside of her hair was dyed a light pink. Rose heard the girls muttering something about her looking like a punk or dressing in punk fashion but Rose had sat through many of Marinette’s fashion rants and this looked more grunge than punk but really she was no expert so she wasn’t sure. She had on a well-worn cropped Jagged Stone tank top that was most likely Luka’s judging from the size, underneath that was a pale pink tank top to cover any skin that would have been showing from the over-shirt. Her pants were black and high waisted, they were capris and the cuffs themselves had a pink plaid design on them that was also on where the pockets looked to be.

Rose gasped when she realized Marinette also looked taller and her eyes dropped to see Marinette was wearing black platform boots with pink laces. She had one fishnet sleeve that went from her mid bicep to her wrist on her left arm and it was adorned in various kinds of bracelets, one that Rose just recognized that she saw Ondine, Kagami, Aurore and Mireille wearing too. Oh…Friendship bracelets. On her right hand she had a black fingerless glove and a black cuff bracelet on. Around her neck was a matching cuff choker but attached to it was a Jagged Stone guitar pic, one of Luka’s Rose guessed. Marinette completed the look with a pink plaid bandana on her head and some round black sunglasses. It was a very different look but Rose thought she looked breathtaking.

They all watched silently as Marinette and Luka made their way over to the security guards all the while swinging their hands back and forth between them cutely. The guards let them in right away, no badges necessary. The odd group of friends, because really that’s what they had to be, all rushed together to give out hugs and greetings and just talk and laugh and Rose…Rose felt breathless. Marinette took off her sunglasses and Rose watched as her eyes lit up in joy as she interacted with her friends. She saw how her eyes softened when talking with Luka and she absolutely could not ignore the smile she wore the entire time. Rose couldn’t remember the last time she saw Marinette smile or look that comfortable. She missed that. She missed making Marinette laugh and smile and she felt like she wanted to cry just watching the little friend group interact.

“She looks…” Lila began.

“Happy.” Rose cut her off. “She looks…happy.” Happy without them.

It would be a couple weeks later that the Girl Squad found Marinette’s YouTube channel where the music video that had been shot at the Jardins des Tuileries was posted. They had watched it silently like when they had watched the new friend group meet. It was good Rose admitted, and it hurt to admit, because that used to be her friend and one person used to be her bandmate. They had watched other videos they had found on the page, all music videos, and they had been stunned. They hadn’t even known that Marinette could sing! But it was that song from the Jardins des Tuileries music video that haunted them.

It was a song about finding new friends. Better friends.

Climbing The Louvre

Kim took Ondine to meet some of his friends. That should be a good thing! Except it turned into a huge back and forth between him and Alix, until they decided to something stupid. What did they get themselves into?

Ondine had not known how much more of a redneck Kim was around his classmates than his swim friends. Seriously, he was a lot more daredevil charlatan. A lot. And the small pink and green fury that was Alix Kubdel just fueled the flame.

“You can’t even climb a tree!”

“I can too! You can’t!”

“Please, I could climb the Louvre.”

“I dare you to climb the Louvre!”

“Do you really want me to? I’d do it so fast you won’t even see my technique!”

“Guys, is that even safe?” Ondine interjected. “Or legal?” They were going to get themselves hurt or arrested or killed or Akumatized from losing or some other thing that would not be a good outcome. Honestly, she didn’t want to mentally explore all the options. Kim and Alix ignored her, instead choosing to insult each other some more.

“You’re technique? On what? Losing?”

“Climbing, sir runs-a-lot!”

“Kim, as much as I hate to step in while you two enjoy yourselves with your wordplay, Alix did beat you a couple of months ago. Therefore, there’s a 39% chance that there will be a crowd uprising if you say the word ‘Dare’ one more time.”

Alix, Kim and Ondine turned to the kid who had spoken. Ondine knew his name, but which one was it? Max? Yeah, Max Kante. Kim’s best friend. Ondine actually remembered him!

“Oh burn! You can’t dare me to do anything Mister I-can-do-anything-you-just-have-to-do-it-first!”

Ondine winced. She had known Kim had a competitive streak. Of course she knew this, she competed with him at the pool every now and then. But this was bad. Very very very very bad.

“Max, what’s the most commonly known synonym for dare?”

“While there is a large amount of such synonyms, I believe the one you’re looking for is simply challenge,” Max answered without pause.

“Oh it is on Kim! I know that place like the buckles on my rollorblades! You’re going down .”

“Race you there?”

“You mean you’ll meet me there. It’s already been proved I’m faster than you.”

“Oh? Ready, set, go!” Kim took off running, and Alix kicked off less than a second later. Oh boy.

“Max, how do get them to call off a dare?” Ondine asked hopefully.

“There’s a 56% chance that an Akuma attacking the Louvre could get them to postpone, but also a 44% chance that they’ll start challenging each other to see who can be the most helpful to Ladybug and Chat Noir in beating aforementioned Akuma.”

“So pretty much, you can’t?”

“Just about.”

“Siren teeth.”

Kim won.

It was a tie.

Technically? Alix won. Due to her smaller size, she went farther up, despite tying with Kim as to how high they went.

Also technically? Ondine convinced Max not to tell either of them that it was a tie, for fear of them coming up with another da- challenge as a tiebreaker and not getting anything else done that day.

Miraculous Descendent Chapter 58: In the Concrete Jungle

Previous Chapter

In the school courtyard, Marinette sits next to Nate and works on one of her designs while Nate is playing one of his hand-held consoles.

"So, how does getting a statue sound to you?" Nate asks with a teasing grin as the two cousins relax.

That causes Marinette to put her pencil down and her face into her hands.

"Please don't remind me of that. I still can't believe Tom plans to make statues for us." Marinette mutters into her hands, but Nate can still hear her.

"Well, you guys are heroes. It's a given that you'll get a statue for how much you've saved the city." Nate reminds her.

"But for us to get a statue. I wanted to be a fashion designer, not a superhero." She tells Nate.

"You can be both." Nate shrugs.

Marinette groans when she hears that, but the two pause their conversation when Nino and Adrien walk toward them.

"Hey, dudes. Adrien and I are planning to visit the zoo after school. You guys want to join us?"

Nate pauses his game and looks toward his friends with a smile.

"Sounds like fun. What about you?" Nate asks Marinette.

She taps her chin for a second before smiling at the two boys.

"It's been a while since I've been to the zoo. Maybe it'll give me some inspiration for my next design." Marinette tells them.

"I'm surprised you need new inspiration. I mean, you won my father's contest. That shows how amazing a designer you are." Adrien tells her with a smile.

Marinette blushes at the compliment and gives Adrien an appreciative smile.

"Thanks. I'm still a bit surprised that my design was picked." Marinette tells him.

"It's awesome. You got acknowledged by a famous designer. Just think. Not only will I be able to brag about being friends with the son of a famous designer. I can say I went to school with a future one." Nino says while putting an arm over Adrien's shoulder with a grin.

"You can also brag about being friends with the son of the owner of Paris' most famous hotel." Nate pipes up with a similar grin.

Nino smacks his forehead in realization before saying.

"You're right. This year has been nothing but crazy for me. I'm friends with a lot of high-class people." Nino says with a bit of a laugh.

Before the group can continue, the bell rings.

"So, we'll meet up after class and head to the zoo?" Nate asks.

"Yep. Until then, off to class." Nino says while pointing in the direction of their classroom.

After class, the quartet pack their things and meet up to leave.

"You guys sure you're parents are okay with this? Adrien's old man doesn't seem to like him being out of the house for things other than school." Nino says while pointing a thumb to an awkward Adrien.

"Don't worry about it. Now that we're not grounded, we can do things like this. I already texted Dad and Jean-Yves where we'd be going." Nate tells him while shaking his phone.

"I told Mama, too. She said to have fun." Marinette tells them.

"Cool." Nino grins while Adrien looks toward them in slight envy.

"I'm jealous. You guys can move around however you like." He sighs.

"Sorry that your father is so controlling," Marinette says while giving Adrien a look of pity.

"I-It's fine. At least I know he does it out of worry and love." Adrien says with a slight smile.

With the atmosphere awkward, the group decides to do their own thing while walking to the zoo. It doesn't take long for Nino to change it, though.

"So, I heard the zoo has a new panther exhibit. You guys want to see that first?" Nino asks the group.

"Sounds good to me." Nate agrees.

"Yeah." Marinette smiles.

Seeing the other two agree, Adrien decides to follow their lead.

When they arrive at the zoo, Marinette looks at a map to find the panther exhibit. While the group waits, they quickly realize they aren't the only ones in their class at the zoo. Max, Kim, and the girl Kim has a crush on, Ondine, are also looking at the map.

"Hey, dudes. I didn't expect to see you here." Nino says with a grin as he waves to the three.

The trio turns toward the four of them, and Kim grins when he sees everyone.

"What's up? We just came here to see the panther exhibit." Kim tells them with a wave.

"Yes. Kim wants to see what they look like and see if he can outrun them. Despite my attempts to tell him how low the probability is." Max sighs as Ondine smiles nervously.

"You know, Kim. He'll stop at nothing to prove how capable he is." Ondine says as Kim grins.

"You've got that right. I'll bet that panther doesn't look that tough." Kim says confidently.

"You do realize panthers are hunters, right? They're born to be fast runners." Nate says in confusion.

"And I was born to be a great athlete. It's the ultimate contest." Kim says confidently.

Nate decides to give up on convincing Kim and the seven head to the exhibit together. They see Alya standing near a zookeeper with her phone out to take pictures of the panther when they get there.

The zookeeper is a plump man with light brown skin, grey eyes, and short, combed brown hair with sideburns that connect to a full beard. The man wears a pale yellow Hawaiian shirt with pink and grey flowers and a name tag attached to his chest that says, Otis Césaire. He also wears pale green jeans and brown work shoes. Resting atop his head are a pair of large black-framed glasses.

"Man. Everyone from our class is here to check out the exhibit. What's up, Alya?" Nino says as he waves toward the glasses-wearing girl.

Alya turns to see the group and smiles.

"Hey, guys. I'm just here to get a few pictures of the panther for my blog and watch my dad work." Alya tells them with a slight shrug as the zookeeper stands up and smiles.

"You must be my daughter's classmates. Nice to meet you. My name's Otis. I work as one of the zookeepers here and am in charge of the panther exhibit right now." Otis tells them kindly.

"It's nice to meet you, Mr. Otis," Marinette says, bowing slightly.

"My dad is one of the best zookeepers here. All of the animals love him." Alya says proudly while standing next to her dad.

Otis laughs at his daughter's praise.

"I'm just an animal lover who manages to connect with them," Otis says, causing Alya to slide next to Marinette and whisper into her ear.

"Mom says he was more comfortable around animals than people and that it was a miracle he managed to propose to her." She says with a slight snicker.

"Did you say something, Alya?" Otis asks with a raised eyebrow.

"No." She says immediately.

As this happens, everyone else circles the cage to see the panther inside.

"Wow. They look amazing. It makes me feel like I'm insulting it by having the Black Cat Miraculous." Adrien thinks as he stares at the panther in wonder.

"Awesome. This is my first time seeing a panther." Nino says with a grin as he stares at the sleeping animal.

Otis turns his attention from his daughter toward the other students and smiles.

"I'm sure. Panthers are one of the most capable predators in the wild. While smaller than tigers and lions, they're quicker and sneakier, especially at night." Otis tells the group as he walks toward the cage.

He grabs a bucket of meat and enters it to feed the panther. To the students' amazement, the panther not only lets him in but lets him pet them.

"Good girl," Otis says while petting the eating panther.

Kim grins as he looks at the panther before turning toward his friends and boasting.

"I bet I could still outrun it."

Otis hears this and turns toward Kim with an unamused look.

"Kiddo, panthers are hunters that can run as fast as cars and wait for their prey to get tired. There's no way a human can outpace them." Otis tells the teen.

Kim glares at Otis when he says this, but before he can say anything.

"He's right, Kim. Panthers are creatures that can easily exceed sixty miles per hour. By comparison, humans have run at a top speed of around thirty. That's more than double." Max tells Kim calmly.

"Yeah, well, athletes have outrun plenty of animals before. Haven't you guys ever heard of the running of the bulls? Besides, where did she place in the County Athletics Tournament? I got first place in that event with time to spare." Kim says proudly.

"Kim, panthers can't enter tournaments like that. It's too dangerous." Ondine tells the jock worriedly as the panther starts to stir from its meal.

"You can't possibly compare to a panther, kiddo. There's a big difference between a human and a panther. We can't outrun them." Otis tells Kim, his tone getting more annoyed at the teen boats.

"Well, we can definitely be better looking than them," Kim says while giving a charming smile toward Ondine, causing her to blush slightly.

Getting irritated, the panther growls toward Kim, causing Otis to glare at him and Alya to groan.

"Here we go." She mutters.

Kim moves closer to the cage and calls toward the panther.

"Hey, kitty, kitty, kitty. How about you and I have a race? Last one's a rotten egg." Kim tells the panther, causing her to snarl at him.

"Going by the six feet-per-second behind you and the forty-five degrees to the northeast, you wouldn't be a rotten egg. You would be lunch." Max bluntly states to his friend, not liking where this is going.

He's not the only one. Alya gets irritated with Kim's attitude toward the panther and her dad.

"Knock it off, Kim. Don't you know you shouldn't mess with animals?" She tells him.

"Listen to your friends, kiddo. You need to leave. She needs peace and quiet to eat, and you're disturbing her." Otis tells Kim.

Hearing this causes Kim to grin and start talking in a baby voice.

"Awww, stressed out? You're talking about a wild animal." Kim laughs, causing the panther to roar at him and Otis to get angry.

"Leave now! Or I'll have you thrown out of the zoo and banned!" Otis yells at Kim.

Kim grins before saying in the same baby voice.

"Fine. Let's go, guys. We don't want to disturb the princess and her angwy babysitter." This gets him a kick in the butt by Alya.

"Don't mock my dad unless you want a black eye." Alya snaps at him with a scowl while he rubs his butt and walks away with a nervous Ondine and Max following him.

As Otis watches him go, he tries to calm the panther and himself. However, the negative feelings he's built up have caught the attention of Hawkmoth.

"Ah, an animal lover who has been scorned. Why don't I help you release your inner beast and become the king of this concrete jungle?" Hawkmoth says as he creates a butterfly and sends it after Otis.

The butterfly eventually arrives at the zoo and lands on the animal tooth bracelet on Otis' wrist after the other students awkwardly shuffle away. Only Alya remains with her father.

"Animan. Your pack has been insulted. I am here to offer you the chance to show them why you don't mess with the animals. Why don't you show them the power of the wild?" Hawkmoth asks with a smile.

"Yes, Hawkmoth," Otis says as black smoke envelops him.

"Oh, no." Alya panics when she sees this.

Unlike other Akumas. Otis' transformation doesn't give him a new set of clothes or some monster form. Instead, he's turned into a black panther with purple eyes. The animal tooth bracelet is wrapped around the front right leg of it.

"Let's see him outrun me," Animan growls as he sniffs the air for Kim's scent.

When he has the sent, he sprints after Kim, leaving Alya in the dust. As he passes some exhibits, he quickly uses his newly enhanced magic fangs to rip off the locks and set the animals inside free. It doesn't take him long to find the athletic teen. He and his friends are currently staring at the monkey exhibit.

"That was a bad idea antagonizing the panther, Kim. With Hawkmoth still around, you don't know what could happen." Max tells his friend as Kim copies a monkey's movements.

"Ah, come on, Max. Hawkmoth has never turned an animal into a villain. What would that even look like? Would it be dressed in a costume?" Kim asks Max.

"Probably. Or it would turn into one of the various mythological creatures Alix told us about." Max agrees.

"Uh, guys," Ondine says fearfully when she sees Animan creeping toward them.

"Oh yeah. What would it be, like a manticore? I think she talked about that a couple of times with big cats."

"Guys." Ondine stutters.

"Possibly. Seeing as it's well-known for having the body of a lion." Max nods in agreement before Ondine shakes his and Kim's arms urgently.

The two turn around in confusion before their eyes widen in fear at the panther heading toward them.

"It actually got out!" Kim shouts in fear.

"So, you wanna see which of us is the rotten egg or lunch?" Animan growls at them in a low, ferocious voice, scaring the teens even more.

"It can talk! Did Hawkmoth turn it into an Akuma!?" Kim asks in fear as he backs away.

He doesn't have time to answer, as Animan stops creeping and starts walking toward them as if still giving Kim a chance to escape. The teen doesn't think much about this and immediately bolts in the other direction to try and escape.

As he's running, he catches the attention of Marinette and Adrien's group.

"Kim?" Marinette asks in confusion.

"Did he get in trouble for teasing another animal?" Nate wonders with crossed arms before his jaw drops when he sees Animan run after Kim a second later.

"That is not a zookeeper," Nate panics while pushing for Marinette to do something.

"Dude! That panther really didn't like Kim mocking it!" Nino shouts in fear for Kim.

"I'm calling the police!" Adrien shouts before running off to find somewhere to transform, Marinette doing the same.

As the two friends watch the heroes run off, they see Max, Ondine, and Alya running after the panther with a panicked expression.

"Are they chasing after the panther and Kim?" Nate asks as they watch her run past.

"I think so, dude," Nino tells him.

Nate cringes when he sees this before deciding.

"You know what, I've faced you and Ivan as Akumas. I'm willing to risk facing down a panther." Nate says before running after Alya, Animan, and Kim.

"Hey, wait!" Nino shouts toward Nate in worry before watching him turn the corner.

"Man. This year is seriously crazy." Nino groans before chasing after everyone else.

While they're chasing the group, Marinette hides in an empty bathroom.

"How did the panther?" Marinette can't help but ask before Tikki appears.

"Because it's not a panther. It's one of Hawkmoth's. They only look like the panther." Tikki explains in a matter-of-fact tone, causing Marinette's eyes to widen.

"They're what?" Marinette asks in a panicked whisper.

"They're an Akuma. Not the panther itself." Tikki says again.

Marinette pauses as she tries to process this information before realizing the only person the Akuma could be.

"Alya's dad became an Akuma and is after Kim." She panics.

"It would seem so. Alya was right about his love for animals if it made him susceptible to Hawkmoth's control." Tikki states calmly.

"How can you be so calm about this?" Marinette asks the Kwami in shock.

"I am as old as the universe. I have seen a lot of strange and scary things." Tikki states.

Marinette looks at her Kwami for a second, wanting to know more, but knows she doesn't have time.

"We'll talk about this later. Tikki, spots on." Marinette commands.

With Adrien, Plagg appears and grins at him as he's hiding behind an unpopulated exhibit.

"It's time to show that overgrown alley cat who the real black cat is," Plagg tells his chosen.

"You heard my comment?" Adrien asks curiously.

"Yep. And I am offended that you compared that to my powers." Plagg tells him with a slight glare.

"Sorry." Adrien apologizes, causing Plagg to facepalm.

"Just say the command." He sighs.

"Right. Plagg, claws out." Adrien orders, causing Plagg to go into the ring.

With Kim and the other students. Kim is running for the zoo exit with Animan hot on his heels. As he's about to leave, Animan gets between Kim and the exit, causing the teen to stop and start walking backward fearfully.

"Looks like I beat you, kiddo. That means you're the rotten egg. Making you my lunch." Animan says as he prowls toward Kim while the other students run toward them.

"H-hey, come on. I was just joking. You don't need to take it so seriously." Kim says fearfully.

"Dad, stop it!" Alya shouts toward her father in a panic, causing Nino and Nate to turn toward her in shock.

"That's your dad?" They ask in shock before looking toward Animan.

Animan doesn't stop at his daughter's words. He charges toward Kim. Before he can bite the fearful teen, Ladybug swoops in and snatches Kim out of harm's way.

"Bad kitty. Don't you know you shouldn't bite people?" Ladybug asks as she stands on the zoo wall, looking down at Animan and holding Kim bridal style.

"Yeah." Cat Noir says as he lands in front of Animan with his staff out.

Animan growls at the heroes before saying.

"That's for domesticated animals. I'm a jungle," Animan states before he does something that shocks the heroes.

He morphs into a hawk and flies toward Ladybug. The heroine doesn't wake up from her shock quickly enough and falls off the wall with Kim landing atop her.

"Sorry." Kim apologizes as he rushes to get off the girl.

"It's fine. That's not the worst thing to happen to me." Ladybug says as she stands up.

She then looks up before pushing Kim out of the way.

"Look out!" She shouts while doing so as Animan transforms into an elephant and tries to crush the two teens.

Animan then morphs back into a panther and prepares to charge at the two before getting hit in the face by Cat Noir's baton.

"Bad! Heel!" Cat Noir shouts as he goes for a couple more swings and spins his body with the staff to get more power in them.

However, Animan jumps back and growls at the hero.

"You should run and hide somewhere safe while we deal with him," Ladybug tells Kim, causing the teen to nod.

When Animan sees Kim trying to run, he growls but can't get far, as Ladybug wraps her yo-yo around his neck and holds him back.

"Don't you think it's a little petty to try and hurt someone for the way they talk to an animal?" Ladybug asks the animal-themed Akuma with a glare.

"Animals deserve the same respect as humans. We're all creatures that live on the same planet. That brat didn't show any respect to either her or me." Animan growls before changing into a fly to escape the yo-yo, and then he morphs into a hawk to quickly fly away.

Ladybug quickly pulls her yo-yo back and attempts to capture him again, but the villain spins to the side to avoid her attempt.

"Shoot. He's going after Kim!" Ladybug shouts toward Cat Noir, who is already rushing after Animan and his target.

"I'm on it!" He shouts to her.

He then extends his baton to make it the height of a building and tries to pole vault toward Animan and grab him while in mid-air. But, like how he handled Ladybug's attempt, Animan easily avoids him before diving after Kim.

Kim doesn't see the hawk coming toward him as he runs at full speed without looking back. It takes Ladybug grabbing him a second time to avoid getting hit. This time, the heroine doesn't let him go until they're on the roof of a random building.

After ensuring Kim is okay, Ladybug stands between him and the street below, yo-yo ready, while searching for Animan. The problem is that the animals Animan freed while looking for Kim are starting to escape the zoo, meaning Animan could be any of them.

"Ladybug, watch out!" Cat Noir shouts to get her attention so she can see him pointing behind her.

Ladybug turns around to see that Animan has circled them and is diving toward Kim again. She quickly throws her yo-yo at the hawk, causing Animan to cancel his dive and flap out of the way. While he does this, Cat Noir launches himself to Ladybug and Kim.

"Hide Kim while I try to stop the Akuma! It looks like he won't stop chasing him." Ladybug orders her teammate.

"Right." Cat Noir nods before grabbing Kim and running off.

"You're not getting away!" Animan shouts as he prepares to chase for the cat-themed hero.

As he does, Ladybug activates Seamstress and transforms into her Sunny Seams outfit. She then takes off after Animan and launches a fireball at the villain. This causes Animan to dive out of the way and let Ladybug pass him. The two magic-powered humans flap their wings as they stare each other down. As they do, Ladybug takes notice of the animal tooth bracelet wrapped around Animan's right ankle.

Believing that is where the butterfly is, Ladybug prepares to attack before reconsidering, not wanting to hurt one of her classmates' parents.

"You don't have to do this. Kim may have been insulting something you care about. But that doesn't give you a right to try and kill him. I think he's already learned his lesson. You don't have to take it any further." She tries to appeal to Animan with a pleading expression, showing how much she doesn't want to fight him.

"That's not good enough. I'm going to show him the true power of animals." Animan squawks toward Ladybug.

Hearing this disappoints Ladybug, but she prepares to fight Animan anyway. She expands the size of her flaming wings and launches dozens of small fireballs at Animan.

As she attacks Animan and Cat Noir runs away with Kim, the students that came to the zoo were helping the zookeepers try to round up the animals before they hurt anyone.

"Come on, little dudes. We need to get back to your cages." Nino says while holding a couple of monkies.

Nate is grabbing a capybara with Max while Ondine picks up a turtle. However, Alya is nowhere to be seen.
