Chapter 1 - Pinky Promise

Pinky promised I was quitting, pinky promised that I wouldn't love somebody if they didn’t. I'm a girl with big ambitions, but did I listen? No, no, no, no. They're tortured and I wouldn't understand it. Plus they got a lot of unexamined father-son baggage. They don't wanna talk about it, is that a challenge?

“Girl, why do you always fall for guys who are way out of your league?” Alina raised an eyebrow as they walked to school.

“I don’t know, it’s not my fault Nathan exists, and he’s gorgeous, and there’s nothing I can do about it.” Marinette groaned.

“Come on, you pinky promised you were quitting.” Alina raised an eyebrow.

“Emotions are freaking hard to control, Lina.” Marinette grumbled. “And actually, I pinky promised I wouldn’t love somebody if they didn’t. Technically, this is just a crush. He doesn’t love me back anyway.”

“Go ahead and tell yourself whatever makes you feel better, but girl, he’s so out of your league.”

“I know.” Marinette grinned. “This sucks.”

“Good morning, ladies.” Nathan came up from right behind them and Marinette had to keep from jumping out of her skin. How much had he heard? “How are the loveliest ladies on this side of the street doing?” It was a nice compliment, they were the only students on that side of the street so it was a safe one, but Marinette couldn’t help the blush that rose to her cheeks at that second.

“Uh… I’m g-good, Nathan! T-Thanks!” Marinette smiled helplessly before noticing the fact that his gorgeous jaw that could cut paper was abnormally tense. “Are you o-okay?”

“Why wouldn’t I be?” He looked back at her with a smile on his face, classic model style. 

“Oh, uh… I-I thought you looked s-stressed, so I thought I’d ask…”

“I’m just stressed. Y’know the deal, good old father-son baggage I lug around everywhere, you wouldn’t understand.”

“W-well, I’d be glad to listen if y-you wanted to vent to a s-stranger.” Marinette offered, still trying to get the blood to drain from her face.

“I don’t wanna talk about it, but thanks. See you lovely ladies in class, ‘kay?” He smiled and passed them, running off to say hi to some of the other guys he hung around with a lot.

“Girl, what was that?” Alina smirked, eyebrows raised.

“I don’t know, he just came out of nowhere and he looked stressed and I just messed things up again!” She screeched, burying her face in her hands as they got to the edge of the curb.

“Mari, that sounded like a flirt. He’s totally into you.” Alina smiled satisfactorily.

“Wait… what?”

Oh, oh, oh, oh, funny I could pick 'em in a line up, line up. Pretty certain I could do it with my eyes shut, eyes shut. A little self-obsessive and I sign up, sign up.

“Marinette!” Alina whisper-shouted. “Stop staring at Nathan and finish your test.” Mari turned and looked at Alina, and the corner of her eye caught Felix rolling his eyes as he turned the page in his book. 

“Sorry, sorry.” She muttered back, turning back to her test. In fairness, Nathan was distracting. He had already finished his test, and now he was whispering quite animatedly to his desk partner, Claude, about the latest in sports news or something, Mari wasn’t really paying attention to the conversation. “How do you do this?”

“You want me to answer your questions for you? Not a chance.” Alina raised an eyebrow.

“No! Survive in a room where he is right there and actually finish your test?”

“Oh, easy. He’s not my type.” Alina shrugged with a smile, turning back to the magazine she’d brought with for quiet time.

Marinette groaned and answered the next two questions before letting her eyes go right back to Nathan’s perfect haircut, perfect biceps, perfect… shut up, bad brain. She was pretty sure her brain would short-circuit if she were in Claude’s spot. 

Thinking about it, Claude was pretty tall, taller than Felix at least, and sitting next to Nathan, he looked small enough for Nathan to bench press. Probably because he could. Nathan was impressive like that– Focus on your test, bad brain.

Thankfully, Marinette survived the test. Which was good, because then she could doodle in her sketchbook without having to feel bad about ignoring the test. Every time Nathan laughed at something Claude said, every time he turned and flexed a muscle, Marinette found herself staring again. How could a person be so amazing?

“Mari. Mari. Marinette Cheng.” Alina giggled. “Girl, class ended, stop staring at him.”

“I was not!” Marinette protested. “I was just staring into space!”

“Uh-huh, sure.” She smiled conspiratorially. “Come on, girl, let’s go to lunch.”

Marinette’s eyes had traveled back to the boys in the row in front of her. “Uh, yeah, I’ll catch up.”

“Suit yourself, simp.” Alina giggled again, hugging her friend goodbye. “I’ll save you a seat!”

“–But I just don’t understand it, because like, I still had the right answer, I just took a different approach. I don’t know why Mendeliev’s so picky about it, I still got it.” Nathan stood and grabbed his books as he grinned down at Claude, who was still seated.

“Right, it’s weird. I’d say to just ‘fuck it, we ball’, but that’s not gonna help since you need to keep your grades up to stay on the gym club.” Claude responded, standing and leaning on the seat as he shoved his papers into his bag. “We’re almost done with this unit, but I swear, the whole course sucks so bad.”

“Right, man.” Nathan agreed, coming around the seat to join Claude as they started out of the room. “You good?” He raised an obnoxiously gorgeous eyebrow as he noticed Claude hesitating.

“Rolled my ankle on the way in, I’m fine.” Claude shrugged it off, making his way towards Nathan. “Come on, lunch is already, like, five minutes over.”

“Yeah, I’ll catch up, bud, there’s something I want to take care of first.”

“Have it your way.” And with that, Nathan was left alone in the room with Marinette. 

“Hey, Marinette! What’s going on?” Nathan beamed.

“Uh, not much! Just cleaning up!” She didn’t bother to say that she had hung back to just listen to him talk longer.

“Need help? I think I’m pretty qualified to help the pretty lady if I do say so myself, Prince Charming and all.” He flexed for effect and she had to keep herself from swooning.

“A little self-obsessed, too.” She joked with a grin as their hands touched above one of her pens. “Oh, s-sorry…”

“Don’t be.” Nathan smiled, his silvery eyes looking so warm and inviting. “I don’t mind the chance to get closer.”

What did that even mean? Marinette couldn’t really dwell on the thought with the issues at hand, namely my pens are all over my desk and there’s a very pretty boy in front of her and she doesn’t know what to do about it.

“Well, I wouldn’t want you to b-be mistaking me for s-someone cool and s-smart and, y’know, better.” She fumbled, honestly just trying to find a way out. Something about the beautiful person in front of her made her uncomfortable. But maybe her gut was wrong.

“I could pick you out with my eyes closed, Mari, even if you were lined up next to every model in Paris. You’re special like that.”

“You… You really think so?” She looked up at him with wide eyes.

“I know so. You’re amazing, Marinette.” His smile looked so genuine. “Pinky promise.”

mmmmmmm. MMMMMM. okay. there might be some recency bias in this, but in no particular order:

liededamp - as much as i meme it up myself i feel like i did manage to have some good character discussions in it and wrestle some real emotion within it as a crackfic, and i think it's resonated with some people a lot actually, which makes me very glad.

tried to touch you but you're cutthroat (stay to see it unfold) - obviously there was going to be a chloe(luka)-centric thing in this list because yes. i'm pretty satisfied with how the theming turned out in this one and my character work on chloe as well.

now this one sits here (whispers things to me) - also obviously there had to be an adrien piece there, and this is?? maybe my most popular one?? even though it's technically love square-focused. i spent like 20 mins trying to pick from the others and couldn't, and i am quite proud of that summary (and the rest of it, but the summary i think i did very effectively) and yes.

did you ever want it? (did you ever fight it?) - one-sided fabian pov fabriz fic. this one also really resonated with people who read it/seemed to leave an impression, and not just bc of the ship but a bunch of other things i put there, and i love fabian and it was so fun exploring the way i see his character and how he'd handle pining for his best friend, and i think i managed to pull off the theming around the five stages of grief reasonably well, so?? i'm happy with it.

saint, bastard, king - grisha fic where it's just. idk man something about the kaz/alina/nikolai (potential) dynamic makes the cogs in my brain turn. the way they're all leaders in their different ways and how they operate in different worlds but then they intersect and it's so??? fascinating to me??? but yeah i worked hard on this trying to figure out how to convey it and i think i managed to quite well??

ok yeah this was very difficult just because i do like?? a lot of my work?? like i always look at it and spot something to edit but overall i enjoy reading it and i'm happy with it and yes. i would've added circumscribe, eight-two-five (my kipps-centric l&co fic) as well bc it's the longest character-study/backstory/one-shot thing i've done and i'm very happy with it, but yes. oh look i did it anyway-

Magnetic Forces

general kirigan x fem!reader

warnings: angst!!!, fluff near the end, jealousy, happy ending. kind of a toxic representaion of kirigan and readers relationship

a/n: i missed writing sm, thank you for your request ml, i thought i would have taken this into a more happy direction but oh well.

word count: 1.2k

“You have to know I will not sit by idle as you parade Alina around as if she means more to you than I do.” You state matter-of-factly. You weren’t used to people fighting for you, let alone fighting to be with you. Alina may have been the sun summoner, but you couldn’t handle people acting as if she was better than the rest of them. You knew and were well accustomed to how she grew up and were even better adjusted to feeling less than your counterparts.

Kirigan’s eyes shone with hesitancy, but your unwavering stature made him realise that this was a non-negotiable, it was up to him to prove whether or not it he meant what he said. He nodded somewhat reluctantly and although you felt some guilt pooling in your stomach, willing your urge to please him to go away, you stood strong.

Mal and Alina stood behind Kirigan and seemed to be engaging in a hushed conversation, your eyes followed their movements with a calculated gaze, whatever they were talking about seemed important. Aleksander, noticing your attention was astray from your current conversation followed your eyes to the couple. His eyes somewhat hardened, you felt his posture tense and in confusion you lifted your hand to place on his kefta covered chest, his eyes moved to your figure and his lips twitched at your innocent expression.

“The tracker” he stated bluntly. “He touched you too much” he sniffed arrogantly, and you weren’t able to disguise the fondness in your gaze. “He was a means to an end” you used his words against him and even though his pride did not allow him to show his admiration for you to be able to call him on his hypocrisy his lips again twitched as he intertwined your arms as together you both made your way over to Mal and Alina.

Alina looked somewhat at your abrupt joint of their once private conversation but nonetheless looked at you both with a welcoming expression as Mal’s eyes glared at your…partner? And as did the man next to you at the tracker. You and Alina both looked exasperated at one another at their tense postures as some sort of way to show off their masculinity. What was it with them?

Aleksander then cleared his throat before he looked at Alina and Mal. “I wanted to introduce you both to my beloved, this is Y/N Y/L/N. She is an Inferni, I’m sure you two have seen each other during your training hours, she is one of the best Grisha under my wing.” Your chest puffs out in pride at his praise however Alina looks to Aleksander in confusion.

“Beloved? But you kisse- “Alina is abruptly cut off as Aleksander’s hand releases your arm to grasp onto hers, you and Alina both gasp audibly as Mal moves to protect Alina however before he can get there Kirigan just as fast, lets go as if nothing had happened. “There is no need to iscuss the past Miss Starkov.” Alina frowns at his formal address. You look between the both of them in scepticism.

“What were you going to say Alina?” you ask before Kirigan can sweep you both away to talk politics with other individuals. She gulps and looks away from Aleksanders piercing glare basically warning her from answering your questions however she shamefully whispers a sentence that alone breaks your heart into a million pieces. “We kissed, the night he summoned me to his chambers” you drop your hand from Kirigans and look at him in anxiety, praying silently for him to deny her claim.

However instead of that he ducks his head and releases a harsh breath. You shake your head as tears fill your eyes, your breath becomes laboured as you feel a hollow feeling encompass your chest as you struggle to breathe. “How- “Your distraught gaze pierces the darkness that covers Kirigan’s heart, and he can’t help but let out an involuntary whimper. “How dare you” your voice is wobbly and painful to hear, and you silently berate yourself for making a scene at an event that should have been a celebration.

Aleksander moves to grasp your hand again, yet you move away from him swiftly and make you way to the door of the hall, whilst avoiding the curious gaze of onlookers. You can hear Kirigan’s swift steps behind you as he calls your name brokenly in hope of you listening to him, you ignore him and make your way to your chambers.

You attempt to close and lock the door behind you, but Kirigan has other plans as he stops the door closing by a swift inch and as his red rimmed eyes meet yours you sink to your plush blue bed as your ears fill with static and you sob into your hands.  Kirigan drops to his knees before you as he attempts to uncover your tear stricken face and although you resist with all you might his broken pleas fill the air. “Please, please hear me out, I-it didn’t mean anything. D-don’t leave me please let me explain”.

Your attempt to let his pleas fall on deaf ears are not achieved as you lift your eyes to see his dark eyes filled with pain and you softly shake his hold on you as you quietly ask him. “I need time.” You tell him bluntly and his heart drops from his chest as his eyes widen, shaking his head as his thoughts race, you can’t mean what he thinks you mean. He surely couldn’t have lost you just before he had been able to win you over, please tell him you’re joking.

Shaking his head violently you can’t help but whimper at his anguished face as his sobs are unable to be hid. “Please don’t leave me” he cries in a broken voice and your decision is almost swayed by the pure pain in his voice “Don’t let me lose you, I-I just got you, please. I don’t think I’ll be able to live without you” he pleas and your eyes widen at his confession and your hands grasp his face suddenly. “I am noy leaving you my love, I need time to be alone, I want to work on this, but I need time.” You tell him as you watch his shaking form find relief and calm down near instantly at your reassurance and you smile down at him.

“We were not together, I do not fault you, but I know I will never forgive myself if I do not take time away from this situation.” The more you talk, the more he understands, and you can feel his slight nodding through your encapsulation of his face. “I will do better, please believe me I will do better for you” his gaze looks almost akin to a puppy begging to be praised and your lovesick heart lets you know that everything is likely to be okay.

As time passes after your conversation in your chambers Aleksander starts spending more time around you and his subtle touches are often hard to ignore. He is trying, more than he’s ever had to for someone and he finds himself filled with butterflies whenever you choose to acknowledge his presence whether it be in public or private. Life becomes somewhat quaint and simple as Aleksander and Alina plan on breaking down the fold and he often finds himself thinking of new ways to surprise you with lavish gifts or teenage date nights rather than focusing on the task he needs to be paying attention to at the current time. And slowly but surely you both make your way back to one another like magnets constantly trying to be separated however always finding their way back together.

It's that one ! That damn video I told you about ! I was literally disillusioned when I heard his review review ! But girl ? Did your brain regress as you got older or something ? From what I remember she really said things that made me hallucinate. (Oh and definitely don't take a look at the comments under this video, most of it is stupid. We are still entitled to the enigma of if Alina was not a summoner of light the Darkling would never have wanted to her. This argument annoys me because in fact, one could outright say that there will be no story and probably never a trigger for Mal to "open his eyes" to his "so-called" feelings for Alina. Because I remember that he proudly fucks everything that moves at the beginning of the book and clearly speaks about it to Alina while letting their friendship gradually deteriorate and also letting his friends call Alina stick...)

Honestly, I never cease to be surprised from the amount of people that swallow whatever an author, actor, director is giving them. We have really put famous people on pedestals.

Okay so, according to that girl and her beliefs:

1) We must believe that Alina found happiness after she lost her powers because the narrative told us to.

2) We must believe that Mal changed for the better with zero development because the narrative told us to.

3) We must believe that Malina is a healthy ship because the narrative told us to.

4) And we must believe that these books are the best YA books that exist out there because....NY Times said so?? I don't know.

It's one thing to love, enjoy the books and still acknowledge their big flaws and another to love the books and think they're perfect.

Peaky Blinders inspired

Aleksander returns from WWI a completely different man. Since he's been back, he's taken over as leader of the Grisha the local gang who basically rules the neighborhood, Small Heath. They have their hands in every business and will get you any information you need for a price. His family owns the Little Palace, the local bar which is run by his sister Ulla. His wife Luda passed during his service from illness. In addition to the Little Palace, their company Morozov Limited (ML) controls real estate and legal betting. He's more personally involved with the not-so-legal business, leaving the legitimate ones to Ivan, his right-hand man.

Alina and Mal have just moved to Small Heath from Keramzin, Alina joins ML as an accounting secretary while Mal tries to find a job. Alina hopes that she and Mal can get married and create a life here within the next year. That is not Mal's plan, he just to stay free and sow his oats while Alina takes care of everything and then run a farm with his wife, who will not be Alina. He proceeds to become a nightly regular at the Little Palace. Alina does very well in the accounting department and becomes one of the office managers.

Aleksander usually doesn't visit the office more than a few times a week for weekly reports or random signatures. He meets Alina one day and his visits increase. Several people have noticed the increased office time but only a few have noticed the why. Both Ivan, who runs the business, and Kaz, who runs the books, tell him to leave her alone. She's good at her job and doesn't cause trouble, they're not losing her because he can't keep it in his pants. Some of the secretaries, Genya and Inej, have also made it clear she's unavailable. The four of them play a role in his other work, very important ones so he listens.

At a holiday office party, Alina brings Mal with her thinking it will be good for them to actually be seen as a couple. Mal proceeds to get drunk, ogle all the women, and flirt with some right in front of Alina. When someone asks when they're getting married, he straight-up laughs and loudly says "Me, marry her? Why in the hell would I do that? All she does is nag me and I can do so much better. like a woman that looks like a woman." Aleksander didn't even have to say anything before Ivan and Fedyor are grabbing Mal. Inej and Genya take Alina to one of the offices to comfort her. He offers to take her home and she accepts, refusing Genya and Inej's offers to go with her. She manages to not cry until they reached her apartment building. He lets her stay in the car until she's done, offering a handkerchief. She asks what's wrong with her and what did she do wrong. He tells her nothing and that she deserves better than Mal, that she needs someone who wants to take care of her for a change. She's shocked and scrambles out of the car, thanking him for his kindness.

She awakes the next day and decides that she's done with Mal, she calls Inej and asks if she can stay with her for a while until she finds a new apartment, Inej tells her of course and not to worry about Mal today, he'll be spending most of the day in the drunk tank at the police station. Mal gets blacklisted from all pubs, courtesy of the Grisha.

You know what happens, Aleksander gives her a mourning period to get over Mal, then slowburn seduction, gang drama, police drama and Mal trying to get back in Alina's good graces so she'll take care of him again, her having a backbone to not only slap him but tell him off.

My ML Grishaverse AU ain't going good girlies. I decided, for some saintsforsaken reason, to start with something like the equivalent of the scene where Alina unlocks her powers. I reread the scene a couple times and the issue is that Alina's relationship to Mal is the crux of that scene, and Mal doesn't really have an equivalent character in this AU. As much as she can be, Marinette is Alina in that she's the Sun Summoner, but she didn't grow up an orphan pining after anyone. As much as he can be, Adrien is dear Darkles in that he's a Shadow Summoner, except 100% less evil.

The original scene basically is Alina retracing how and why she started suppressing her powers in the first place, but there's not really a clear reason why Marinette started suppressing her powers other than "it needs to be that way for this AU." So I basically need to figure that out, and unless I want to seriously nerf Tom and Sabine's character, I got nothing there.

I also still don't know who Nikolai is and I don't know what's gonna happen with the Firebird; my only thought on the Firebird is "Luka?" but Luka is one of the characters who I kinda want to be Nikolai.
