Favorite Liar

far from home spoilers under the cut 

MJ watches people. It’s a thing she does. She doesn’t like the chit-chat, doesn’t like the small talk that usual people do before they go deeper. She likes the truth, because it gets to the point. 

It’s partly why she’s first interested in watching Peter Parker: he’s bad at lying. He cannot lie to save his life, not even about his favorite color. Ned lets her in on this when they tell two truths and a lie, and Peter can’t even lie and say that his favorite color is purple. 

It’s weird, to have someone their age be bad at lying. She’s used to the higher-pitched voices, the eyes moving, and the ease of it all. She’ll catch herself lying. 

But Peter can’t. He has to tell when he’s having a bad day, he can’t hide behind anything. 

She was actually only sixty-seven percent sure that he was lying about being Spider-Man. But that is because Spider-Man has never stuttered over lying about the color purple, he speaks with ease and has snappy comebacks for any local villain. 

And then Peter Parker is announced to be the villain. The next and only hero, and she hates Quentin Beck. She hated him ever since Peter had talked about him in a hushed voice, tears spilling hot over his cheeks and his throat trying to choke out words. 

So she knows that this won’t last. She’s confident, even though Peter is freaking out about it because Mysterio--that stupid bitch, what the hell was his costume--had told everyone that he was a villain. 

Pepper Potts and Happy Hogan are trying to do damage control. 

“Have him talk,” MJ says. She’s nervous right now, impossibly so. Her eyes keep darting, and Pepper Potts is looking at her right now like she’s crazy. 

“Peter can’t lie. He gets too nervous.” Peter’s head turned. 

“What, MJ?” 

“Peter, tell them your favorite color is purple.” 

“My favorite color is actually purple because of the royalty connotations, and uh, um, uhhhhhhh.......it’s nice? I think there are some colleges that have a nice color scheme and, um, it’s cool!” 

“Oh my god,” Pepper murmurs. “For once, a lack of PR skill pays off.” 

“I can have PR skills!” Peter protests. “I can have tons of skills!” 

“Not this one,” MJ says. 

So they have Peter talk. Everyone knows it’s him. Flash had a heart attack when he found out that the guy he called a dickwad is, in fact, his idol. 

“Um, hi guys,” Peter says quietly. “I know that people saw what Quentin Beck said and did, so I’m here to dispel some of his rumors.” 

He can’t lie. He just can’t. Even though the detector tests aren’t always reliable, he fails so hard on such basic questions that it’s impossible, really, to disprove that he’s really bad at lying. 

Plus, he’s New York’s favorite hero. No one had heard of Quentin Beck, until the back story comes out. 

He’s a disgraced employee of Stark Industries, known for wanting to sell most of his inventions under the Stark Industries name to the Department of Defense for weaponization. 

MJ holds Peter as he shakes, realizing that life is actually okay. 

“Who knew you being a totally useless bad guy would pay off so nicely?” she asks, fingers carefully carding through his hair. This thing is relatively new, and she’s still on edge being at his apartment, his Aunt May in the other room singing awkwardly to some old nineties movie soundtrack. 

“It’s not over yet,” Peter mumbles. “I still have to be careful. And I’m going to mess up.” 

“That wouldn’t be Spidey if you didn’t mess up,” MJ says. “Now come on. I’m on a new episode of my murder show. Let’s watch it before dinner.” 

Peter smiles at MJ. Her eyes are focused entirely on learning about the guy on the screen, but he’s happy that he has her and that she’s on his side.
