I have a headcanon that all the demigod kids routinely end up in each others beds/cabins at night, because nightmares and trauma and whatnot. So I wrote this smol fic.

There Is Rest and There's You

The first time Nico sees Annabeth leaving the Poseidon cabin at an ungodly early hour (having been dragged from his warm bed by Leo and Jason for an ungodly early errand), he flushes, quickly looking away. Because it's obvious, even to him, that she’d spent the night. But Annabeth merely sleepily raises a hand in greeting and continues on her way back to her own cabin.

Jason, maybe noticing Nico’s discomfort, simply shrugs. “Musical cabins,” he explains. “Happens a lot.”

Leo nods in agreement. “Yep. I had some really wicked nightmares last week, three nights running. I ended up on Jason’s floor. Would have been in the bed, but Piper got there first,” he adds, disgruntled.

Huh, Nico thinks. Musical cabins. That's a little weird.

After that, he pays more attention. It’s not unusual, as it turns out, to find the Apollo cabin overstuffed with various campers early in the morning, rivalling even the occupancy of the Hermes cabin. Sometimes it’s couples tucked in together, but more often it’s friends, siblings. Seeking comfort, and sleep.

It's six months into Nico's stay at Camp when he begins forgetting to lock the door to Cabin Thirteen. He nearly runs Harley through with his sword the first night he finds the younger boy fast asleep in his cabin. But after that, it quickly becomes routine to wake to the quiet comfort of someone else’s soft snoring across the darkened room. Most often it's Will, brushing a warm hand over Nico's forehead before settling into the other bed, but sometimes it's Harley, and several times Leo, complaining that Jason’s bed was already full.

It’s a little weird, but surprisingly nice. Nico begins leaving his door unlocked most of the time.

On a night late in February, the nightmares are worse than usual. Nico wakes in a cold sweat, heart pounding, tears welling behind his eyelids. He does what he usually does - dresses quickly, and walks. There’s something meditative about the rhythm of his boots on the ground and the sharp, cold air on his skin that usually settles him.

But the thing is, it’s really cold. And after only about half an hour he finds himself standing in the central green, torn. He can't feel his toes, but he can’t quite stomach the thought of returning to his own empty cabin, either.

His frozen feet lead him up the stairs to Cabin Seven. And gods, it’s warm inside.

There’s a soft rustle of blankets from Will’s bunk.

“Nico?” Will’s voice is soft and scratchy. “What’s wrong?”

The taller boy is out of bed and across the cabin in a heartbeat, reaching for Nico’s hand. Scanning him, Nico knows, blue eyes wide with worry.

Nico shakes his head. “I’m fine. Just - couldn’t sleep,” he murmurs, and the concern on Will’s face fades to sympathy.

“The bunk above mine is empty,” he says simply.

And that’s that. Nico climbs up, snuggles in. Will’s messy blond bedhead pops over the edge of the bunk, his smile fond. He squeezes Nico’s arm. “Sleep tight.” And then he disappears.

Nico worries it might be awkward, in the daylight. It’s anything but. The Apollo cabin is a riot of sound and motion in the morning. Austin flings a stuffed turtle at Nico's head. Nico's foot is hanging off the edge of the bunk, and Kayla tickles it, cackling when he squeaks.

“Breakfast time, sleepyhead,” she chirps.

“Sleep well?” Will asks as Nico climbs back down.

And the thing is, he really did.

Time passes. The nightmares wax and wane, but they get easier, mostly.

Until one night in July. It’s almost a year to the day since he came to stay at Camp - Nico thinks, later, maybe that’s why the nightmares hit particularly hard. He wakes shaking, gasping for air, convinced he’s fading again, permanently this time. It scares him so much more than it did when it was actually happening. He shoves his hands against the wood of his headboard, hard, positive they’re going to slip right through. They don’t, but he can't shake the panic.

Nico’s up and out the door in the space of a breath, no hesitation as he makes a beeline, barefoot, for Cabin Seven. The air is cool for July, the full moon shining bright above.

He can feel his panic ease the second he closes the door behind him, soothed by a quiet symphony of soft breathing.

But the bunk above Will’s is occupied tonight, and as Nico's eyes adjust, he realizes all the others are, too.

“Nico?” Will’s voice is a whisper. “Nightmare?” He sits up, silhouetted in moonlight.

“Yeah.” Nico steps closer. “Looks like you’re all full in here, though. I’ll see you in the morning.”

He turns to leave, but Will grabs his arm. “I’ll come with you.”

“No, it’s okay. I’ll be fine. You go back to sleep.”

Will gazes at him in the dark, fingers still wrapped around Nico’s wrist. “Or you could stay. Here.”

“There’s no room, though.”

“I have room,” Will whispers.

Nico blinks at Will’s bunk, then back at Will, his stomach attempting to leap into his throat. Will’s eyes are wide, nervous.

“I... um -” Nico begins. He can feel his face heating at the thought of it.

“Gods, di Angelo, just stop talking and get into his bed. Literally no one cares,” Kayla grumbles from the next bunk over. There appears to be at least one Demeter kid in her bed. Maybe two.

Will’s fighting a grin now and he shrugs. Nico shrugs back, then… climbs into the bed. Will scoots over to make room, pulling the blankets over them both. And gods it’s warm, and it smells like Will, and when nothing else calms him, that always does.

Nico lets his eyes close. Then -

“Do - do I feel like I’m fading?” he asks in a whisper, echoes of the nightmare flashing behind his closed eyelids.

Will gazes at him. Then he reaches for Nico’s hand.

“No,” Will whispers. Someone clears their throat nearby and Will grimaces, yanking the blankets over their heads.

“Did something happen?” he asks, his breath brushing Nico’s face.

“No, just - nightmare."

Will nods in understanding. “No. You’re good,” he smiles. He goes to pull the blankets back down, then seems to reconsider.

“That’s um… that’s usually why I end up in your cabin. At night.” he admits, quiet. “Sometimes... I just need to make sure that you’re still solid.”

Nico stomach flip-flops. "Oh."

Will shrugs, sheepish. He pulls the blankets back down, settling on his side. "Here," he says, reaching for Nico's hand again. "Then neither of us has to worry." He tangles their fingers together, reaching out to lay his other hand on Nico's arm, tethering him.

Will's soft smile in the dark is dazzling, and his hands are warm, and Nico worries his own answering smile might just light up the entire cabin.

When he wakes hours later to the familiar sounds of chaos, his head tucked against Will's shoulder, Will's face buried in his hair, well. He thinks maybe this musical cabins thing isn't so bad after all.

Notes

This is a short one! I tried to challenge myself to write something coherent in 1000 words or less. I almost managed it.

It is also my personal headcanon that Harley kind of attaches himself to Nico & sees him as a big brother. This comes up in something else I'm working on as well.

au concept: hera didn’t just confound jason and percy’s memories. she did it to leo and piper too.

now, hear me out. “what memories could she possibly confound??” you cry.

here’s where the massive changes come in.

piper isn’t a child of aphrodite anymore. she’s a child of iris. “but that interferes with her character arc!!!!!!!” there are still ways to have that character arc. she could feel like the whole ‘rainbows and pegasi’ thing puts pressure on her to be overly feminine. people could doubt her still, because she’s just some minor demigod. nothing special. she could still feel the need to prove that she doesn’t like all that glittery stuff (although it would be cool to see her eventually realize femininity isnt bad and doesnt make her weak because a lot if not all female riordanverse protagonists feel like ‘not like other girls’ but thats a different rant for a different time).

leo isn’t a child of hephaestus anymore. he’s a champion/child of hestia. “but hestia is a virgin goddess!!!!” so was iris but she still has children in the series. she could have pulled a hera and produced a child by herself. it wouldn’t stick out in the story i dont think. he can still have fire powers because hestia is the goddess of the hearth. i’ll probably make a more in depth post on why he’d be a good champion/child of hestia and the ways that could work later.

and now, the memories hera confounds.

piper and leo arent new demigods.

they used to work for luke.

that’s why they “weren’t claimed” until 15-16. they had already been claimed beforehand, at the right age. after the titan war, maybe they both agree to run from camp and bounce around all over the country— until hera kidnaps them and puts them on the bus with jason. this also means that jasper isnt a thing immediately— and maybe it never happens. (that could just be me being a big valgrace shipper but whatevs)

annabeth recognizes them but says nothing. bruce (or whatever his name was,,,) recognizes piper and is like “you’re back? how could you betray us like that?” and piper doesnt know what he’s talking about.

piper and leo piece together their identities faster than jason. leo is completely sorry about it and feels like he has to prove to everyone that he isn’t like that and doesn’t believe that anymore. piper, on the other hand, is more conflicted.

my brain thought of this at 6 am and i just finished it now so uh here ya go

bi! Jason headcannons:

he never questioned his sexuality before the Argo II

as a son of jupiter and praetor it was always expected of him to get with reyna

and he like reyna just fine.

he thought all romance was supposed to be like that.

looking back, he could see that he always thought of reyna as a close friend and maybe a sister, but not a girlfriend

he meets Piper and he thinks, finally, this is what being in a relationship feels like

hes got the butterflies in his stomach, the nerves, the longing glances

but then he starts feeling those things towards Leo (I will die on my valgrace hill)

ans it confuses him so much

he doesnt talk about it to anyone, but he starts locking himself away, scared that Leo or piper will figure it out

eventually, the one who figures it out is annabeth.

they're flying on the Argo II to California to get Percy, Hazel and Frank when she comes into his cabin

she only says, "So, Leo then?"

and jason starts crying

annabeth comforts him as best she can while Jason, who usually isn't one for crying, sobs into her t-shirt

he professes his feeling for both Leo and Piper, about how confused he is, because he cant be gay because he likes piper, but he obviously isn't straight because he likes leo

annabeth tells him that it doesnt need to be black and white. she tells him about bi and pan and poly and everything inbetween

he settles on bi. he likes it, it makes him feel safe.

he stops avoiding piper and leo

he now has a really sisterly bond with annabeth. he feels like he could tell her anything

his next BIG problem is when he meets percy

because that man is a Roman god walking, with his snark and his eyes, his hair and his ridiculously toned muscles

annabeth nudges jason when they get back to camp jupiter and says "stop drooling over my boyfriend, Grace"

if he had a crush on leo before, he has a CRUSH on percy

they practice fight shirtless and jason always loses because he gets caught up in the look of Percy's abs

in fact, theres only 2 members of the seven that he hasn't even had a minor crush on.

thats hazel and annabeth, because hazel's too young and annabeth is too much like Jason himself

he even had a tiny little thing about nico in HoH, which was only amplified when Nico came out, because there was at least one person on board that he KNEW wasnt straight (realistically there isn't a straight one at all)

jason tells nico right after that he was bi. he also tells him that it was leo who made him realise it, which makes nico laugh.

he stops crushing on nico during BoO when he sees how he looks at will

everyone thinks it's normal for Jason to be blushing bright red all the time, but in reality one of them just did something cute

eventually he gets over all his crushes, but he always plagues himself with what ifs

what if he knew he was bi earlier? could he have gotten with Leo instead of piper?

what if percy and annabeth weren't dating? could he have had a chance with percy?

what if annabeth never told him about other sexualities?

before percy goes off to new Rome he stops off at the Zeus cabin

essentially, the exchange goes like this:

percy: "hey man, I just wanted to tell you before I go that I'm bi and had a crush on you when we were on the argo"

jason: "no way, me too bro"

then they do the dudebro hug thing

you know the one

they agree that they dont have crushes on each other, but in an alternate reality they're definitely dating

percy says something along the lines of "has to be an alternate timeline without annabeth"

which makes jason smile because he wishes he could be that invested in someone

he had broke up with piper months ago, because he had a lot of stuff to do, regarding loving himself and whatnot

and, for once, jason is mostly happy with himself

The Lost Hero

but for the Lost Heroines AU so the lost trio is Reyna, Piper, and Leo

I’m in love with the idea of Reyna, Piper, and Leo opening the series. I love the canon Lost Trio to death and they’re still important in this au just later.

(In my head this au is definitely with endgame Pipeyna And Valgrace but you can think of it however you want)

Percy freaking out over Annabeth missing and freaking out even more when they figure out Hera is the one orchestrating it because he know they have it out for each other.

Reyna sort of recognizing Percy and getting a bad feeling but keeps her distrust to herself.

Chiron: Percy maybe you should lead the quest

Percy: nah I need to look for my gf but I think the newbies and amnesiac can handle it.

Chiron: what if they can’t save Hera

Percy: sounds win win to me?

Ok so all of those times in the Lost Hero that we here about “a kid in a purple shirt” and other stuff insinuating that there’s another camp? So in this au I want there to almost be a nonexistent fourth main character, Jason Grace. This makes total sense because of anyone has the same lore and recognition level as Percy Jackson it’s definitely Jason. 

Some monster recognizes Reyna and asks where her sparky blonde friend is. Maybe a minor god or nymph mentions that someone’s been looking for her but refuses to give any details. Reyna meets Thalia and has an overwhelming feeling of familiarity:

Reyna: you’re sure we’ve never met?

Thalia: no I’d definitely remember you ;)

Reyna: it’s just your eyes... they’re so familiar. You don’t have family? A sibling maybe?

Thalia, visibly stiffening: No. I mean.... no.

At the end she’s just starting to remember things and she’s like, his name is Jason. The boy looking for me is named Jason Grace.

Reyna and Leo Do Not Get Along at first. Even in the fake memories they mostly just tolerated each other bc they were both friends with Piper. She almost throttles him for being an idiot and hitting on Khione and then Thalia. When he rescues them from the Cyclopes though and opens up about his powers and then what happened to his mom they finally bond. She’s not sure why but for some reason she totally understands the guilt he feels at the hand he played in his mother’s death.....

So Leo and Reyna both get along with Piper really well right away and slowly learn to respect and care about each other over the course of the book. They’re not super tight by the end but there’s enough of a foundation that when the Mark of Athena comes around and they’re super close we already expected it.

Also the tension of Piper basically being the peacekeeper between them while knowing she’s planning to betray them to save her dad....

Aphrodite speaking to Piper in the dream and subtly insinuating that Piper has non platonic feels for Reyna. The two of them having a type of closeness that they don’t with Leo and him feeling like an outsider because of it and not knowing why. Man the tension of it all.
