Those periods of spring and then sudden returns to winter you mentioned sounds a lot like the "little winters" of Tennessee! We get cold snaps nearly into summer.

Yeah it's probably the same thing! I think it's just something that happens in places that have significant temperature differences between seasons, they can zigzag back and forth and overlap in funny ways.
