i just finished watching 'daddy' and wow was it unhinged. however, as much as i enjoyed the plot of it itself, i couldn't stop noticing the parallels to 'hey melissa'.

it begins with a character going about their everyday life, interacting with work colleagues. then, the antagonist is introduced, and they want to date the focus character. this quickly spirals into something horrifying. paul is kidnapped and kept locked in melissa's apartment. he's forced to act like something he's not. she tasers and demeans him. he isn't allowed to leave. meanwhile, frank is kidnapped and kept locked in a dungeon after he tries to run away. he's forced to act like something he's not. sheila locks frank out of the house in a storm, then sends marco after him when frank attempts to leave and she tries to kill him. he isn't allowed to leave. paul encounters ted while locked away. ted is murdered during their captivity. frank encounters barry while locked away. barry dies of an untreated wound caused by their captor during their captivity. bill enters melissa's apartment, unknowing of the horrors within, and she tries to kill him. daddy's ted enters sheila's mansion, unknowing of the horrors within, and she does kill him. melissa and sheila are both openly referred to as young and attractive. paul and frank both had pet dogs that died. ted and barry were both the first to get caught up in their respective tormentors' plots and died as a result. even down to the creepy "daddy"/"puss" themes. the ending of hey melissa is paul going back to her due to his stockholm syndrome and continuing to be treated like a cat. the ending of daddy is frank being stuck with sherman, who says he'll be his daddy "for ever and ever and ever-". so on and so forth. now, consider the fact that melissa didn't have any external influences from demons. she wasn't stealing the lives of hundreds with the help of the black book and the lords in black. she wasn't supernaturally old or with any lore-related backstory. melissa was just like that. i'm not sure which one freaks me out more.

Hey so @caktusjuice-draws I was listening to a song called 'if I had a tail' by Ingrid Witt.

And it hit me that this could be a roleswap of HM, but instead of Melissa looking for a cat of her own, she's trying to Be someone's cat.

Like she adores cats, she's got everything she had about that from before. But it's her who wants to be the pet cat. And she murders "bad owners" instead of bad dogs. She saw Freddie, idk kick a stray cat that scratched up his car.

Cue a different sort of horror as Paul is now trying to keep this murderous woman happy like before, but in a new way. (Because he wouldn't let this happen he pretends she needs to wear cat sweaters because, he's very much not ok with this but at least he can play along in ways to make it less uncomfortable for him.)

But she's very territorial. Cue the same sort of fighting with Emma but instead of fighting over Paul as a pet, it's fighting over Paul for attention. Anyone's attention. Emma is not allowed in the house because Melissa would kill her. Now we can get Paul straining to maintain his new relationship with Emma while keeping Melissa at bay. Cue Ted coming over uninvited and having a Paul discovering Ted moment but it's Melissa. Paul tries to explain but Melissa isn't letting Ted blab and "gets her claws out" with knives.

Maybe the Spot story is used as a last resort to get Melissa to leave. She turns on Paul, but she can't bring herself to kill the guy who's done the best owner work so far. So she calls the hospital, he wakes up.

Same sort of ending, but now instead of mommy, he finally calls her the name she wanted him to, and she goes to work everyday like he was going to do. Melissa allows him to date Emma if she stays out of the house and doesn't take more than an alloted amount of time from her. Or maybe Melissa kills Emma. You can up the creepy but this is a basic idea.

Whacha think? I thought it was a fun little swap idea. New sort of horror but similar things.

KLINGY - Kai and her attachment issues

Kai is clingy. With a capital C K. Kai will attach to any amount of affection she can grab onto. Any older adult showing her affection? That’s a parental figure. Someone around her age showing her basic human decency? Kai’s falling head over heels. To find out the reason why, we’ll have to go back almost two decades. To when Kai Drew wasn’t Kai Drew yet. To when she was just a little girl.

To when she was Kai Dean.

For the first 9 years of Kai’s life, she wasn’t shown basic human affection. Kai’s bio parents weren’t great. They tried forcing her to be someone she wasn’t. They straightened her bouncy brown hair and forced it into a braid. They forced the bright personality into an anxious shell of itself. Kai wasn’t allowed to be herself for 9 whole years. And even if she now is technically allowed to be herself, she has a family that loves her as she is, she can’t. She’s in the public eye. Kai has to be happy, happy, happy.

So kai clings to the affection. She doesn’t know how to provide it for herself, so she relies on others to provide it for her.

Kai clings to love.

Kai clings to praise.

Hell, it’s all over her story!

Kai clings to Paul and Emma’s unconditional love, despite the fact she’s only known them for two days.

Kai allows herself to be Melissa’s cat because she calls her a “good person kitty”.

Kai goes to watcher world with Bill because he’s nice to her.

i think, at her core, kai is still that little girl, chasing the affection she never got.
